ore than one year after the coup, the relative stability in Yangon and, of course, Naypyidaw is showcased by SAC as proof of a return to pre-Covid ‘normalcy’; however, the ever-expanding fighting, bombing and torching of villages across the country and continuing punitive raids and loss of life prove otherwise. It remains to be seen how, in this context, the recently announced recommencement of commercial flights to/from Myanmar on April 17 will be handled. Despite the current challenges, the past couple of months have been busy as we are preparing two initiatives that support Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) across the country. The first one is a ‘Use and Practice of Research in the Project Cycle’ workshop series that will run from May 6 to July 22 and involve the mentoring of six CSOs. The CSOs, which are based in Yangon, Meikthila, Bago, and the Shan State, develop activities in diverse sectors including public health, environment protection, labor rights, gender issues, and non-formal education. For our initiative, they will participate first in a series of lectures and then receive guidance on an on-going or early-stage research and documentation project currently in development as part of their existing activities. The second initiative is developed with funding from UNESCO and is in collaboration In this issue

with three CSOs located in Yangon and Tanintharyi Regions, and Rakhine State. Focusing on ‘Education for Peace and Sustainable Development’ (EPSD) through a hands-on approach, our collaboration with the three CSOs will first include a six-day training course, a three-month participatory action research project, and an online public campaign centered on an EPSD-related topic defined by our partners. We are really looking forward to collaborating with these new partners over the next few months! On the more international side of our activities, we have recently opened two new rounds of fellowship competitions: (1) the 2022 CAORC-INYA Scholars Fellowships for U.S. Scholars Conducting Research on Myanmar in a Third Country; and (2) the 2022 CAORC-INYA Short-term Fellowships for U.S. Graduate Students Conducting Research in a Third Country. As earlier mentioned, we are very cautious regarding the reopening of Myanmar’s international borders and resumption of commercial flights. The two new fellowship opportunities therefore allow the future fellows to conduct research in a third country. We hope this opportunity will attract a large number of candidates.
