Upcoming Opportunities at Inya

The Inya Institute plans to annually host a language course on S’gaw, Tai Long, and Jinghpaw languages that will be open for U.S. and international students, NGO workers, researchers and anyone interested in the linguistic, cultural and ethnic diversity of Myanmar.

Current events in Myanmar have shown non-Bamar groups’ strong commitment to a federal union. Among the various ways international support may be appreciated by all these communities in the coming years will be the international actors’ capacity to understand their cultural and historical backgrounds as well as speak some of their languages.

Also, whereas Myanmar language is taught at least at four U.S. universities and in Yangon through a multitude of private courses, there are very few opportunities anywhere for an international audience to learn languages spoken in Myanmar other than Myanmar language. The institute hopes to partly fill in this gap.

For Karen-speaking, Shan-speaking, and Kachin-speaking language instructors, our plan will offer them an opportunity to advance their language teaching skills and to expand their circles of friends.

We are currently recruiting six language teachers who will first participate in our training of trainers and then lead the language course scheduled on September 5-16, 2022.

For details on the language course registration, stay tuned to our Facebook page! Also look out for those details in our Summer 2022 newsletter!

The ‘Training of Trainers’ and ‘Language Course’ are funded by the U.S. Department of Education
