AcademicYear23/24 Term2 22ndMarch2024
At the time of publication, I am currently on day 2 of my FOBISIAHeads conference in Vietnam. It is always a pleasure to talk with other international school leaders about the great learning and creativity which is on daily display at BukitTimah. There is a lively energy as students start seeing their art work displayed in preparation for Arts Connect next week at which I am looking forward to seeing you all in the various drop ins. With term 3 ECAsign ups underway this week, the fervour for extra opportunities to learn and explore new activities is evident and I am grateful to the teachers for committing to providing another range this term, it certainly demonstrates their passion for education! It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of term 2 and before we know it, the end of the academic year will be upon us. In between this of course is an exciting term 3 ahead which will be as busy and learning enriched as ever!
I wish you all a lovely weekend.

Congratulations to Miss Kay, our EALlead who’s completed her PGCE with EAL! If you’re interested in our developing approach to EAL, I’ve asked Miss Kay to explain it further here: “Our learning pathway offers a tailored program to support our students with English as anAdditional Language and considers their cultural background, current English proficiency, and educational goals. We utilize resources likeThe Learning Village, to accommodate learners of all language backgrounds and levels. Personalized orientation interviews help build trust and familiarity, especially for newcomers experiencing culture shock. Small-group settings encourage confidence and risk-taking in language learning, fostering a sense of safety and belonging. The curriculum covers four major language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing, with a focus on functional language and vocabulary. Initial assessments align learners with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), guiding instruction from survival language to academic language. EALsupport continues until students can access the curriculum independently, based on ongoing assessment and feedback.”
The school strives to keep parents informed about their child’s learning whilst balancing our teacher’s priorities.Areminder that tutors and subject-teachers are always available, and aim to respond to parent emails within 48-hours, however the following are two ways you can immediately keep up-to-date with your child’s learning.
Reminding children of learning, and pre-teaching key terms or ideas, is shown to be beneficial, so we’ve put together a summary of upcoming content for each class here: Parent-Shared
Permanently collated here: Parent-Shared.T2B Curriculum Letters.

Last Friday, we welcomed Matthew King from the Advanced Remanufacturing andTechnology Centre, a part ofA*Star, into Key Stage 3 last week to talk to our students about careers in engineering and the exciting variety of work happening just in the centre where he works. Matthew literally blew a few minds when talking about the tiny tolerances they work to and fielded many excellent questions from the students, even sending a more detailed answer to one question as he travelled back to work afterwards!Thank you for your engaging visit.

Our primary classes got a little hands on this week with some hair raising static experiments. We discovered that some hair types make more powerful static chargers than others! We also tested the different mediums that sound travels through to see which worked best and theorised why this is the case!
Secondary science has been investigating renewable energy and learning more about bioplastics!
The wind turbine challenge was a closely fought battle to transfer the highest amount of energy from the hairdryer through to our ammeter. Well done to Elyas for just snatching the win from Varonnika in the final moments of our competition!

Key Stage One have been practising their teamwork skills during some lunchtime House competitions. The students have shown so many of our school values during these times; trying new games, encouraging one another, persisting when things are not going to plan, communicating positively with team members and so much more! We would also like to thank ourYear 5 and Year 6 leaders, who have been great role models supporting the KS1 students.
This Term 2b, Year 3 and 4s have been exploring poetry writing in English. The Year 3s have been learning about whether plastic is beneficial or harmful to them and the environment, and have written a poem on their understanding of it. The Year 4s have been learning about rivers of the world and its different features, and have crafted a poem that reflects their perception of the different personalities/ identities that a river can have. Scan the QR codes below to read some of the students’creative work! Well done to them!
(Poems missing are either due to your child being absent or not having finished their work in a timely manner)
Key stage 3 got together for a series of paper STEAM challenges this week! The challenges included making the longest paper chain with a single sheet ofA4 and climbing through an index card! Winners earned points for their houses and it was great to see the whole key stage working together towards a common goal! Some were more successful than others, but hey we had a good time trying!
