Kia Ora! UNITEC!

Ora! Whether you are new to Unitec or a returning student, I would like to welcome you to Unitec. As a student, you have made the decision to invest in your future, change your life and strive towards your chosen career. We want to help you reach your aspirations and as New Zealand's largest institute of technology, we are well placed to support you and provide the excellent career-focused education you need to be successful in your chosen field. Whether you are based at Mt Albert, Henderson or Albany, we have a range of services including teaching support, personal support services and career advice, designed to help you get the most out of your studies. These services are free and designed to help you, so please make the most of them. When you’re not studying, there is also a range of social, cultural and sport activities happening to keep you energised throughout the year. The USU Students' Association, in partnership with Unitec, arrange a wide range of events, activities and student services to help you enjoy your time here. This magazine, the first of 2012, highlights some of the upcoming activities, including the largest orientation event in the country, Sounds in the Sun. I would encourage you to get involved with student life at Unitec. The people you meet in class or around campus can often become lifelong friends and might even become colleagues later in your career. On behalf of all the staff at Unitec, I want to wish you the very best for the coming year and hope your experience at Unitec is an exciting, positive and life-changing one. Rick Ede Unitec Chief Executive

2012 is going to be an awesome year! You can rest easy knowing that the team at USU and I are going to be here to support you the whole way. I want to say “hi” to as many of you as I can; so if you see me around (and you will!) come give me a hug/high five/ fist bump, whatever works for you. I would also like to say a special Haere mai/welcome to students at our new Albany campus. I will be coming over as often as I can to make sure everything is all sweet. It would be great to see you all at Sounds in the Sun (Which is still free for students!). For those new to Unitec, I was elected last year as your Student President! What does that mean? Mostly it means I sit on committees with academics talking about issues that affect students. I’m here to represent you on the big issues at Unitec and at a national level; so if you have an issue, come share your concerns with me. Working alongside me is the USU team (a worthwhile group of people to get to know). We have the Student Executive, who brings your issues to the table for discussion. You can find their contact information in the front of your diary. We also have the Education team who works as your own (free!) advocate if you need representation on any Unitec issues. Don’t forget the events team who bring all the fun to campus! The media team brings you the magazine, student blog and heaps of other interactive services. While you have been on holiday enjoying the golden weather (cough), we have been organising a great orientation week. If it’s your first year, make sure you catch one of my orientation talks (because I love the sound of my own voice). They are short and sweet and will give you the low down on what’s available to you around campus. Want to know where to get a $15 osteo appointment or find the best pie on campus? I shall tell all! Hope to see you around! Stay cool, Shannon Student President

INTERVIEW BY ASHLEY SMITH Which do you regard as the best musical performance you’ve ever SEEN? Why? Wow that’s a hard one- maybe lately I would say James Blake at Glastonbury festival. The set was perfect, the sound was perfect. He and the other two members of his band just play the most mesmerizing music and built up to an amazing climax at the end of the set... a bunch of flares went off at the end of the last song and lit the whole crowd up orange .. spine tingling! What’s been your favourite memory of Summer 2012 so far? We did a few gigs over summer around the summer spots of New Zealand and they were pretty epic - but probably just spending time at home - I live right on a beautiful beach on the east coast of the South Island- and love to spend time there especially with my son Remy.

In your opinion, what’s the best part of a Kiwi summer? The best part would be the long days - getting dark at 10 at night down south where I live, long bbqs, late night Sundays - listening to music in the sun. Doing road trips to remote beaches What’s the biggest difference between touring in Europe and touring in New Zealand? Europe is so big and populated, there are just massive highways going everywhere - New Zealand is a lot more back road style driving, but often it’s pretty similar between the two. What’s the strangest gift you received for the holidays this year? I got some 'Mr Men' fronts undies, mine had Mr. Happy on the front. Thanks sis!!

Which is your favourite international venue you’ve played at? We played some amazing venues in Europe and through the UK - Ireland too.. We've played in old war bunkers in Hamburg , an old meat works in Prague, which was called 'Meetworks'. Sydney Meyer bowl in Melbourne (where we supported Tool during a Big Day Out tour) is this amazing outdoor amphitheater set in the middle of the botanical gardens that’s close- but I would have to say the Forum in Melbourne - mainly because of the layout and the ornamentation makes for a good night for the people that come to watch the music.

Do you have any pre-show rituals? Definitely, I'm as ritualistic as Nadal - Plane, hotel, lie on bed for 10 minutes then go to sound check- one beer at sound check, take 2 beers and one red bull or V back to hotel - sleep until 3 hours before the gig then get up and scull my red bull or V then pace the room for 1 and a half hours until we get picked up to go down to the venue.

Is there still a place on the bucket list you haven’t yet played? Maybe sonar Fest Barcelona - or Burning man!

What can we expect to hear from you this year at UNITEC PRESENTS Lipton Ice Tea Sounds in the Sun? We have some new stuff and some old stuff - but we've been playing new songs for our upcoming album and so we are really looking forward to jamming them out, and we could get nice and soulful and then we could get quite heavy after that. Can’t wait!

In 5 words, how would you describe the dynamic of the band? Kaleidoscope - Soul Music- Geyser - Dark Chasm- Dreaming

What’s been the highlight from Summer 2012 thus far? The highlight has probably been starting work on new material, feels like ages since we’ve done something new! Spent the summer living at my parents again which was not a highlight. We’re excited to have you back for another year at UNITEC ORIENTATION —what’s been the biggest change in your lives since we saw you last March? We finally got the album out in May of last year which was great. Spent a while touring around and doing shows which is always fun, it was the first time we had done a tour of our own and it went really well. The biggest change though is probably the fact that Matt is now living in Oz which makes thing a little bit more tricky!

Which track is currently getting the most play time on your iPod? At the moment it’s anything by Kendrick Lamar. I don’t usually listen to a lot of hiphop but I really like his stuff. Been thrashing Twin Shadow too, saw him at Laneways and went out and bought the album (not really, but been watching all his stuff on youtube). There’s also a track by this guy Zoo Kid/King Krule called Out Getting Ribs that’s been constantly on repeat in our studio. Super swag video too. What was the drive behind fusing electronic music with pop? I can’t remember there ever being a conscious decision to do it, we just had a motto of ‘If it sounds good, do it’. Ash and Matt are from a hiphop background and they were keen to do something different, Ben is from more of a rock/pop backround and I guess I was the electronic influence. The new stuff we’re working is gonna be quite different though. What was it like touring with artists like Nas and B.O.B? It was fun! We were a bit nervous about how our electronic-pop sound would go down with the kind of crowd Nas and Damian Marley pull but we managed to get through pretty unscathed haha! They were kinda snobs though, they wouldn’t let us meet them. At one point Damian Marley requested that a particular worker from the venue was not to be in the hallway when he was there haha! B.o.b was awesome, he was way more chilled. Neesh gave him a KIS tshirt that he wore in Japan. What’s your favourite track on “Ghost”? My favourite track on the album would have to be the title track, ‘Ghost’. That song took a long time to come together; we went through a few different choruses and structures before getting Dan Black involved and having him do one. It’s my favourite song to play live too!

INTERVIEW BY ASHLEY SMITH AND EMILY SMITH

Where would be your dream venue to perform?— Sky is the limit! I’d wanna perform at Coachella festival, hopefully pretty early in the morning so that I could spend the rest of the day watching the awesome bands from the side of stage. If the sky was not the limit I would say the moon.

As dub step is a growing genre in the music industry, who of your fellow dub step artists are your favourites? Im all about Kiwi artists, truth, Optimus Gryme, Crushington, Dutty Ranks, Perverse, Dubkrimes. Internationally, skream & benga, swindle, silky, joker and jakes. What do you think about Skrillex receiving five Grammy nominations? Its awesome, great exposure for electronic music, and his music and branding appeals to a mass market which is cool, hopefully some of those people venture into other realms of bass music, not just hard electro kind of styles. It’s all positive. Facebook or Twitter? Both! Which New Zealand city is the best to perform for? That’s a hard one, Christchurch all the way.

Share the love. People love a freebie, myself included. The way I see it, a lot of people forked out for my albums in the past, so why not give something back.

What’s currently on the top of your dub step playlist? Im feeling a lot of Swindles stuff, his new jam “Ignition” is a big one. You’ve given out a lot of free music over the internet, why so generous? Share the love. People love a freebie, myself included. The way I see it, a lot of people forked out for my albums in the past, so why not give something back. With which artists would you like to collaborate? Benga, kryptic minds, Nero, Jakes. Tell us how you really feel about Kanye West! He's going to win “dj factor”.

law Since September 1 last year, the New Zealand law has changed what, and how, you can download from the Internet. Now, using file-sharing software to get the latest movies and TV shows illegally could mean you lose your Internet access completely and face hefty fines. Worse still, someone else could download MP3’s on your wireless, and leave you facing the music. In conjunction with Jackson Russell Barristers & Solicitors, USU presents this must-attend seminar on how the new law works and how to protect yourself - whether you’re a student, new to NZ, a tenant, or a small employer.

We have been working really hard to make an impact on the NZ public so music can be our full time job. There is nothing like seeing people that are into our songs Being one of New Zealand’s best reggae bands, how has that made an impact on you? We have been working really hard to make an impact on the NZ public so music can be our full time job. There is nothing like seeing people that are into our songs, from big festivals to small towns and the like around the country and overseas, very cool. What’s the best memory from Summer 2012 so far? Have to be Raggamuffin, awesome crowd response even though we played the smaller village stage, they were very eerie, very….. Let’s settle this once and for all— what exactly does it mean to “Skank”? Mmmmmm funny one that, everyone has their own interpretation but when you see everyone getting into it, warms the heart. Which other reggae groups do you enjoy listening to? Katchafire, House of Shem, 3 Houses Down, Cornerstone Roots, Foundation goodness me the list goes on we’ve got so many and for overseas reggae, Morgan Heritage, Stephen and Damien Marley, Alpha Blondie, Big Mountain, Third World, J Boog, Rebel Soldiers, Tomorrow People and NRG Rising, The Green. Wow. Heaps! I have a big collection….. How are you keeping up on your New Years resolutions? Any success stories? No, I’m still moaning, blah blah…… What’s your favourite thing to do with your down time? When I’m lucky enough to get some, playing pool’s right up there, we are very competitive…

Go to tutorials. You might reap unexpected rewards and bonus points opportunities for it, plus you’ll absorb study tips from your peers!

6

Read from the beginning. It is so much easier to keep up with the material bulk when you’re doing it day by day rather than all at once (at the end)!

4

Read what you want to. Outside of assigned readings—read for yourself. It will keep your skills sharp.

9 Actually ATTEND lectures. If for nothing else, it creates a sense of community and the social networks from lectures will motivate you to maintain attendance.

8 Habits of a Successful Student

Rebecca Jury graduated from Canterbury University in 2008 with an A+ grade average. She has recently worked with Auckland University Press to publish a book on the secrets to success at University. Her 10 Steps to a Great Degree outlines a very doable approach to maintaining maximum classroom achievement. Here are 10 good study habits she outlines in her new book:

3 Be a Somebody. Engage and connect with your lecturers and tutors. Don’t let yourself just blend into the crowd of a lecture hall.

2

Don’t do Uni work ALL THE TIME. “If you’re going to enjoy your work, you have to enjoy other things as well” –Rebecca Jury.

If you’re interested in grabbing a free copy of 10 Steps to a Great Degree for yourself, email: StudentMedia@unitec.ac.nz

LEARN in lectures. Go to class with a sharp and ready mind. Lecture is the best place to absorb and remember a concept.

5 READ your readings. Taking notes as you go is a great way to reaffirm that you’re absorbing the material.

Rain and Sun protec tion. The festival is on no matter what the weather, so suss out the appropriate gear to keep you comfortable on the day! Knowing Auckland—it could be both!

Your I.D. You’ll need an I.D. in order to purchase alcohol from the bar, so that’d be a REAL bummer to forget! Photo ID will also be checked at the door to ensure that the name on your ticket matches up with your photo ID (This could be a passport, drivers licence, student ID or 18+ card).

Cruiser Cleo Bachelor of the Year will be present at the festival with giveaways. Swing by to cast your vote for this year’s Cleo Bachelor of the Year. This year’s MC— Clint (from The Edge)—is in the running, so show your support!

Mai FM Will be at the gate full of energy and giveaways. Don’t miss them on your way in!

CHARGED Mobile phone. Usually with larger crowds, your mobiles are working on overtime to find a signal, so charge ‘em up before you get to Unitec. Unopened bottle of water to keep hydrated in between epic dance binges. Make sure it's a sealed plastic bottle. Cash Money There won’t be cash machines on site, so prepare ahead of time with the no fail payment method— cash! There will be eftpos payment options available at the bar. Or get a Dash card (see below). A fantastic attitude. Nothing’s worse than a party pooper!

Pre-loaded Dash tickets cards are available from USU reception for free. You can activate it on your dash account (which already exists if you have a ticket). The card can be loaded to use at the bar and can also be used as your ticket! The advantages to having a Pre-Loaded Dash Tickets Card: -Less waiting time in the bar- there will be dash only card lines. - Discounted drinks. -Top the card up on the day using your smart phone or the top up station. -Any money not spent will be refunded back into your account free of charge.

LEAVE AT HOME

The following items will REFUSE you entrance to the event, so be sure to leave these things back at the flat!

Alcohol. We’ve got booze for sale inside the event. Save your stash for next Saturday night. F.Y.I: There’s a liquor ban in the entire area between Mt. Albert and Point Chevalier, so best to just leave it at home. Glass Containers are a hazard to everyone. If you’re bringing in a bottle of water, make sure it’s plastic and sealed.

Animals other than guide dogs are not allowed at the festival Rif Raf. If you’re going to cause trouble, we don’t need you there. Plain and simple. MAXIMUM FUN FOR EVERYONE!
