The History of

Golf at Gleneagles

The history of the Gleneagles Hotel started long before the hotel was opened on 7 June 1924. Donald Matheson, General Manager of the Caledonian Railway Company, had a railway line running through the valley. He was on holiday in Strathearn in 1910, which was known as the era of ‘Grand Hotels’. The surrounding countryside in Scotland impressed and inspired him so much so that he had a vision to build a country house hotel in the style of a palace with a golf course to attract the travelling public. Donald described it as a place where “guests will travel on our trains, to stay in our hotel, to play golf on our courses”.

James Braid, known as one of the golfing greats, made Matheson’s vision a reality by designing and creating two golf courses named the King’s Course and the Queen’s Course. Between 1901 and 1910, James Braid had won five Open Championships, but his talent didn’t stop there as he then turned to golf course design as a career. Manual labour was used to create the two golf courses, which were finished long before the hotel. In 1924, when the hotel opened, the two golf courses had already made its name.

The King’s Course and Queen’s Course offered a dramatic landscape change to what existed before them. The courses were built on sand, which made them resemble older golf courses in Scotland. The dramatic change in the landscape after the courses were built resulted in the course holes being isolated from the neighboring holes, giving the golfers the feeling of playing on their own private courses. ‘The Wee Course’ was the third course, opened in 1928 and designed by George Alexander. The name was later changed to the Prince’s Course in 1974. The Prince’s Course was then followed by a fourth Course named ‘Glendevon’ in 1980. In 1990 a course named the Monarch’s Course was built over the eighteen-hole Glendevon’s Course. After the rebuild there were some holes remaining which were then incorporated into the ‘Wee Course’. In 2001 the Monarch’s Course was changed to ‘The PGA Centenary Course’ to celebrate the year that the venue was selected for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Gleneagles courses The King’s Course

The Queen’s Course

The PGA National Academy Course

The King’s Course, designed and built by James Braid, is an eighteenhole course. When you take your first shot it looks like a simple pitch to the raised green, but in actual fact the shot is longer then you think. To have a successful shot you will have to choose the right club. The right golf club is the secret to this course.

The Queen’s Course offers beautiful woodland settings and has hosted some of the top golfers such as Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson, and Lee Trevino.

The PGA National Academy Course

The course is not a golfer’s dream, but it has the most beautiful scenery with views from trees all around as well as beautiful mountains to the north and green hills to the south.

Some of the great names in entertainment and sport, like Sean Connery, Burt Lancaster, Bing Crosby, Jackie Stewart and the famous Alan Shepard, have also been on this course.

is an enjoyable course with its own great tests for entry-level golfers. This course is where you learn to play the game as well as to accomplish your goals. Most of this course was built and created by the members and staff using the resources the hotel nursery offers. The idea behind building this course this way was to recapture the spirit of George Alexander’s design.

JAN DE WET SILVER LAKES CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

With 2015 being one of the hottest years on record globally, coupled with the local drought conditions, our Estate gardens and golf course have certainly looked better. The revamped gardens in Pebble Beach Drive were planted during the September 2015 heatwave and took some time to settle whilst the heatwave at the beginning of January 2016 severely affected the golf course. A ground temperature reading by our golf maintenance team on Thursday, 7 January 2016, was just over 60 degrees Celsius! The greens took severe strain during the hot and dry conditions, but the hollow tine process will soon restore them to prime condition.

through the approval of the budgets by the members. Several important administrative functions such as the approval of the previous year’s financial statements and election of directors in the Environmental and Chairperson’s portfolios will also be attended to at this AGM.

Notwithstanding the good rains during the middle of last month, we still urge residents to use water sparingly and abide by the City of Tshwane’s directives in this regard.

To finish, I would like to encourage residents to communicate with me should there be any issues you would like to bring to our attention.

The Silver Lakes Home Owners Association’s Annual General and Constitutional General Meetings are scheduled for Monday, 22 February 2015. Members of the Association are urged to attend these meetings where the tone is set for the coming year

The CGM will consider the adoption of our Association’s Memorandum of Incorporation as well as amended rules for the Estate. Formal notice of the meetings will be circulated to all members at the beginning of February 2016.

Please feel free to make an appointment via my assistant Michele at secretary@silverlakes.co.za or on (012) 809-0142. Regards Jan

Compliance Issues of speeding, not removing dog excrement and noise pollution were raised as issues of concern. Inconsistency in terms of rule enforcement was also highlighted. On the golf course, unrepaired divots and pitch marks as well as litter and loud golfers were pointed out as problematic. The HOA continues to encourage all residents to obey the Rules of the Estate. Cooperation is key to harmonious living. Should you feel that the rules are inconsistently applied, please contact the HOA on 012 809 0142 / liaison@silverlakes.co.za. Thank you for completing the survey. The next survey will be sent out in March/April 2016. Please note that there is a formal complaints procedure for the handling of complaints. Should you wish to lodge a complaint, please send an email to complaints@silverlakes.co.za.

Water awareness! All of us (including the fauna and flora) are currently going through a tough time – the heatwave. It is very dry, there has been very little summer rainfall and there are water restrictions. As an estate, we all need to stand together. Be aware of unnecessary excess use of water. Please use water sparingly. Water consumption needs to be limited in order to assist in this regard. Harvesting of rainwater is also something to be considered.

CORLIA MATHEWS ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS Welcome back to all our home-owners! During the past holiday season and the month or so before, we must have had the most severe drought conditions in a long time… in any case the hottest days ever recorded! We could not water gardens and the golf course… we all had to ‘neglect’ our own gardens and washing our cars etc. for a while… but now – as I am writing – the rain has come. Our streams have started flowing again… the dams are full and the gardens and golf course are slowly coming back to life again!

The most important thing is to streamline the processes and actions that must take place. As we all can appreciate, working with ‘other people’s money’ not only has vast responsibilities but also definite challenges regarding the time frames needed to verify the following questions: which project, is it necessary, why, how, the optimal way, etc… and only then… do we have the money? Therefore, after 2 years of revving and neatening the estate we have accomplished some success. Some other jobs still need time, but we just need to persevere! My mom used to say that one needs people with ‘big bums’, meaning people who can sit (or in our case stand) and do the work. As we say in Afrikaans, have ‘vasbyt’ – perseverance – and obviously to me the most important are pride in the work we do and commitment. We are not all artists who can create beautiful stuff out of ‘nothing’, but we can all work hard and try our best. That is what we are checking on Monday the 18th of January! Did we do our best? Did we make ourselves proud? And if not, what can we do to remedy the situation?

We are ready to go and tackle the new year and its challenges full on. We have our first 2016 ‘maintenance drive-through’ of the estate on Monday 18 January. During this evaluation of our estate we will not only look at what was achieved over the past year but also at the processes, in particular: - can we speed up these processes - can we do what we do better - are there alternatives Please turn over for continued article...

Now onto a much more positive note!!! We are looking forward to another year of streamlining our maintenance of the gardens. Garden Group has now had the contract for one year and, as you all know, the first year in ANY job is always the year with the biggest learning curve. We trust that the maintenance of the gardens will be streamlined in the next year.

Naturally we have done all of the above of the past two years with only maintenance money. We did not develop any new projects or have big expenses. We did some cleaning up since after 22 years in existence, like anything else in life, our estate needed some tender loving care… some in-depth maintenance and, as you all know from experience, this is a never-ending cycle… and we will continue with this maintenance. But what I was coming to is that the next two years will be exciting years in terms of developing the new projects that we have budgets for outside of the maintenance budget, and we will see the growth of our ‘recycled’ plants in their new flower beds.

Development plan: - We will build and plant the much talked about rose corners.

- We will rethink the entrances, flower beds, gates, signage and the fountains. - We will add to and create new playgrounds for the children at the front of the Club and around the estate. - We will develop the ‘sports and play’ area at the south west corner of the Club by adding tennis courts, specialised active sports areas for the children, soccer and beach volleyball fields. - We will upgrade and develop our maintenance workshop area into a safe and hygienic area. - We will focus our attention on the very big eyesores to our estate – the Lynwood gate entrance and the Silver Lakes Drive wall and sidewalk. A bit more about this entrance to follow.

As you all know by now, we had to stop construction of the Lynwood/ Silver Lakes Drive gate since the original approved plans were retracted because the fire brigade decided they need two entrances into the estate. Solomon Mahlangu gate was originally approved to be the only necessary fire entrance (the reason for the height) since the existing fire station is in Silverton, to the east of Silver Lakes. Adding to the now approved fire entrance, we have received an urgent application from a homeowner that the Silver Lakes Homeowners Association are ‘prohibited from continuing with the erection of a structure purportedly for the purposes of a fire entrance on stand 169’, thus successfully delaying the construction of this gate. We will all have to see what the courts have to say now. I, as the Environmental Director, profusely apologise for the inconvenience caused by the above actions and the ultimate untidy appearance of this gate of the estate since it is now half constructed, but we will get to the bottom of the issue. It may take some time, but I personally promise we will do what we can to make it less of an eyesore. On the same note, the 1.2+km drive up Silver Lakes Drive towards our gate is not a pleasant one. The wall is ugly and our sidewalk looks awful, but at a cost of too many millions we cannot include this project in this year’s budget – it will be addressed in the budget for 2017/18. Until that time we will make proposals.

Perhaps creepers or a gravel pathway? If you have any suggestions, please let us know or, even better, join one of our committees and come and assist us in making these pertinent decisions of what to do with the available funds! In the budget for 2016/17 we have been allocated (for the first time in 2 years) about half a million rands for gardens, play grounds, street corners, etc. The list seems endless and if you think about what we spend on gardens, we need to sit and carefully plan what the priorities are… on what we should spend our precious budget.

Adding to the above, we have traffic congestion at the small island outside our gates in the mornings when a large number of cars try to leave the estate, going to their various jobs and schools. This we cannot rectify ourselves since it is on Tshwane property and we had to hand in an application for a wayleave to alter this island. We will keep you posted on this issue as well and we will follow this up with our engineers and the city council as well.

We have recently had the GEO certifier at Silver Lakes. He scrutinised our practices and evaluated our environmental principles to see if Silver Lakes Golf Estate is worthy of being the 1st GEO certified golf course in Africa. Good luck, Andrew! I am sure you will let us all know when it happens. Related to this visit, I am sure we can organise someone to revive our birding club! More news next month – especially on the overall environmental plan for the estate. Hope you all have a successful and happy 2016! See you at the AGM on Monday evening, 22 February 2016! PLEASE, IF YOU CAN AT ALL ATTEND,DO SO. We need the homeowners to come and see what is happening on the estate – to decide for yourselves what it is that we do and what it is that you want us to do or what we must change. Enjoy – see you in your gardens and at the AGM. Corlia Mathews (Environmental Director)

Committees for the Environmental Portfolio Once again we invite ALL home-owners to join us on the Architectural and/or Environmental Committees. These Committees sit once a month for 10 months of the year : - Environmental Committee – 1st Tuesday of every month - Architectural committee – 2nd Tuesday of every month As you all know, the new developments have gone into the new year – as we all know happens with building processes – and we need to finish this building work as soon as possible. After talking to the various parties, I am sure we will have the restaurant up and running by February and the construction finished at the Club by the end of March. It will also soon be time for us all to move towards using our new revamped Club House and its facilities. As soon as I have more news, I will report it. In the meantime, join us upstairs to taste the new style food that made Café 41 famous.

- These days are fixed unless public or school holidays fall over the same period. If anybody wants to find out more or wants to join one or both of the committees, please do not hesitate to contact Mandy at the HOA offices on 012 809 0142 or mandy@ silverlakes.co.za and me at mathews@iafrica.com or 083 448 9441.

Finding New Feathered Friends by Koos Marais

Towards the year’s end one tends to be overwhelmed and engulfed by cheap nostalgia and meaningless occasions filled with platitudes and clichés. It seems to drag on until the crowds finally decide to call it a day and depart for busier shores. To discover a new friend in the midst of the madness comes as a pleasant surprise, even if it is of the feathered or furred kind. We, the residents of Silver Lakes, live in a unique environment which we must jealously guard. One of the things we can justly be proud of is the menagerie of avian inhabitants. We have a list of almost 200 bird species that have been recorded in our gardens, fields, trees, shores and waters. The joy of a confirmed sighting of a new species for one’s personal list is only surpassed by the “discovery” of a new species not previously recorded on our official list. South Africa is home to roughly 850 bird species and the greater Gauteng area to 450 or thereabouts. Our list of slightly less than 200 leaves much room for improvement, but it also creates an opportunity for the enjoyment an addition brings to the intrepid birder. Birding or twitching, as it is also known, is an absorbing pastime. The

faithful addicts go to amazing extremes to add just one more bird to their list. One year ago there was a flurry of activity amongst South Africa’s top twitchers when a red-throated pipit was spotted just outside Windhoek. A friend and his family immediately flew to Windhoek and celebrated joyously when they were able to tick off the 756th bird on their list. This was followed by another frantic trip a few weeks later when a snowy white egret made its appearance outside Cape Town. A relatively new addition to the twitcher’s obsession is digital photography. The ease and accuracy of autofocus lenses and quality of high value ISO numbers have combined to give us the wonderful opportunity to capture the beauty and vibrance of birds, even in full flight. The first prize for the majority of birders is a decent image of a new species. Photographers spend small and large fortunes in order to do so. With time one comes to know our estate’s feathered friends. Most of them are, like ourselves, creatures of habit and tend to keep to the same areas. As one moves through the estate, the ringing shrieks of the ubiquitous crested barbets, the hauntingly beautiful duets of the red-collared barbets, the hollow laughs of the hadedas, the scoffing challenges of the grey

louries, the hoarse croaks of the various egrets and herons, the chirps of the swallows and weavers, the shrieks of the lapwings, the rising crescendos of the thick-knees and the sights and sounds of a host of other birds are a comforting reassurance that all is well, that life is chugging along at a healthy pace and that everything is in its place. While the relative boredom of routine is a good thing, it is the lure of the unknown and the excitement of the new that gets the blood moving. It is the sound of an unfamiliar bird high up in a tree or deep in a hedge that sets one’s heart racing and renders the mouth a lttle dry. Is it a new one or just another thrush? Where is it? Oh dear, there it goes, without a positive identification.

Then, suddenly, the bird is gone. I view my images on the camera’s monitor and realise that it is, for me, a new species. Two of the images are razor sharp. From the general appearance I hazard a guess of some or other tern. Later I am elated when I can identify it as a whiskered tern, a new species for the Silver Lakes list. Life feels good. I have added in a small way to the collective joy and beauty of our lives in this wondrous environment.

The phone rings. “Come quickly, we are sure we have a pair of black cuckoos just outside the garden.” We grab the cameras and lenses and leave breakfast to go cold on the patio, rushing at the legal speed to our game reserve where our friends are waiting with binoculars and bated breath. As we exit their porch and enter the small gate into the veld beyond, we hear it immediately, unmistakably. First the slow, deep whistle building up in intensity, then the fast, excited shrill, whistling twitter of the black cuckoo. We approach slowly until suddenly we see them, a few metres up in a sweet thorn tree, hunched forward. They spot us and then lazily fly away to a nearby tree. I crawl forward, cradling the big lenses, hoping for a clear shot, but to no avail. They don’t allow us to come closer, preferring to hide behind the foliage. For a few seconds I can see them both clearly, but then they become obscured again. I take a few shots just for the sake of confirming the identity later. After an hour’s tracking them by sight and sound we give up, sans usable images, and return to the cold breakfast, happy to add another tick to the established, semi-official Silver Lakes list.

A common resident of our reed bushes, the southern red bishop

Early one morning, a few days later, we are strolling along the shores of the big dam, cameras in hand, hoping for a sighting of the new blesbok calves and impala fawns that arrived after the first rains. The hazy, lazy days of summer have indeed arrived, inviting us to venture out in the first glowing light of dawn before the scorching heat of midday will drive us back indoors. All our regulars are there, flying, feeding or perching, but suddenly a movement catches my eye. It does not fit the pattern. It is new. I approach the water’s edge, sit down and aim the camera. The bird is flying fast; it dips, rises, dips, rises and then dives into the water, rather shallow, and exits again to continue on its merry flight. My camera’s auto-focus sensor locks on like a radar guided missile and I shoot in continuous mode.

Health Benefits of Playing Golf Whether you want to meet up with friends or close a business deal, a round of golf is just the thing. Golf is not only good for business, but it has some health benefits as well. Played outdoors on a large course, the idea behind this sport is to hit a small ball into a series of holes with as few strokes as possible using a variety of golf clubs. One would think it is common sense that golf is good for your health, but as you read you will see just how healthy it can be for you. Your health will improve physically and mentally, which can enhance anything from your mood to your relationships. Spending a day on the grassy golf course carrying and pulling your golf clubs and swinging the clubs to hit the ball burns more calories than going for a walk anywhere else. The grass is soft and that makes your legs work harder because your legs have to push you upward without you even noticing. Contrary to previous beliefs, golf is a very demanding sport and requires a person to be somewhat athletic. A player also needs strength and endurance as well as strategy and mental toughness to get through a good game of golf. We will only be looking at some of the benefits that golf has like Brain Excersise, Improving Friendships, Benefits of the Sun, Burning Calories and Improving sleep.

INTRA MUROS FEB 2016 (24) DESIGNED BY

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

Brain Exercise Playing golf increases your heart rate, which means the blood flow to the brain is better. The blood flow to the brain helps with the stimulation of nerve cell connections. By challenging yourself to continuously better your personal score, improving your strategy and developing your hand-eye coordination, you keep the logical part of the brain active.

Friendship Playing golf with friends is not only very enjoyable and social but it also gives one the time and opportunity to improve existing friendships as well as to meet and connect with new people. Networking is also a great way to close business deals, and with golf there is more than enough time to interact and meet new business opportunities.

Enjoy the sun While enjoying a round of golf with friends, nature and the sun hold many benefits when it comes to your health. The green of the grass and nature around you has a relaxing effect on the body and mind, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. The sun gives the body the vitamin D that it needs to promote bone growth while also reducing depression and some types of cancer.

Go Calories The walking works wonders. While walking from hole to hole, rather than driving with a golf cart, you will burn calories fast and easy. Want to burn even more calories. Carry your own golf clubs and you can burn up to 1000 calories in just one game.

Sleep Tight After a game of golf your body is tired from all the exercise and will beg you for that well-deserved rest. You will fall asleep faster and easier than ever before, and you will also sleep longer and deeper, giving your body a good rest.

YOGA vs PILATES

PILATES Studies show a great strengthening in the abdominal muscles, which are effective at tightening up the hard to reach places. Flexibility is slightly improved throughout the work out.

BONUS BENEFITS

MANY PEOPLE ARE CONTINUOUSLY SAYING HOW EITHER YOGA OR PILATES CLASSES HAVE BEEN A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE. THEY FEEL YOUNGER, STRONGER, LIVELIER OR MORE FLEXIBLE; HOWEVER, THE MIND IS A POWERFUL THING. SCIENTISTS HAVE DONE IN-DEPTH RESEARCH TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT THESE ACTIVITIES CAN – OR CANNOT – DO FOR THE BODY. HERE IS WHAT THEY DISCOVERED. Written by Demi Moolman

YOGA Yoga has been shown to lower your stress levels, as it is a form of meditation allowing you to clear your mind and find inner peace. It has also been proven to slightly lower the intensity and frequency of hot flushes. Yoga has been proven to help some individuals combat depression, anxiety, chronic back pain, diabetes, stress, and fatigue.

HEART HEALTH YOGA Depending on the level between beginner and pro, the person benefits from cardio depending on a slow walk or a very brisk stroll.

PILATES As with Yoga, the cardio and heart benefits depend on the level you have reached in the class. The cardio benefits will range between that of a slow walk or speed walking.

PILATES Pilates is very good for improving your posture, as you are strengthening your back and abdominal muscles. Pilates helps with asthma and rickets. It is one of the best types of exercise for primary and secondary prevention of heart disease. It has also been said that Pilates can help strengthen the immune system.

WEIGHT LOSS

BREATHING TECHNIQUES

YOGA

Burning between 145 and 250 calories in a 50-minute session, Yoga is generally not intended for weight loss. Scientist’s suggest jogging or more intense workouts if your sole purpose is to lose weight.

Breathing techniques in Yoga are used to help you achieve absolute relaxation. During your session, you concentrate on how you breathe, and then sending the breath to areas that may be tight or are holding stress. This can help to relax these specific muscle groups in your body.

PILATES

PILATES

YOGA

Weight loss is easier with Pilates than with Yoga. In 50-minute workout, you can lose between 175 and 375 calories. However, to burn weight you would need to do about 4 advanced routines a week.

Pilates uses breathing techniques to provide the muscles with the energy they need to achieve the session and improve breathing technique in general. The technique allows you to concentrate on the quality of oxygen being inhaled.

BODY STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY

TONING YOGA

YOGA Many studies have been done to determine a reliable result when it comes to the improvement of strength and flexibility from yoga. The results showed that there is a direct link to the increase of strength and flexibility based on how often and how regularly you do a Yoga session. This can allow the body to become up to 24 percent more flexible.

With Yoga, toning can be achieved. Yoga allows you to tone your whole body while it allows you absolute relaxation.

PILATES Pilates intensity allows you to achieve toning much faster. Frequent Pilates exercises can give a flatter and firmer stomach very quickly.

A financial adviser worth his or her salt will take the time to fully understand your current situation and any aspirations or concerns you may have for the future. With your input, your adviser should explore every aspect of your financial plan and walk you through the solutions that are best for you in terms of risk cover, income protection, long- and short-term savings, investments, retirement and estate planning and then put those solutions in place and review them regularly.

THE COOK ON THE CORNER A LABOUR OF LOVE... Unless you’re a chef, nobody really seems to enjoy cooking. Moms, wives and partners across the globe cook more out of necessity that out of sheer desire. However, cooking is a labour of love – after all, we cook because we need to eat to survive. Or so they say, at least. This concept of cooking being a labour of love was really made apparent to me when I was younger and my mother used to cater for us for every breakfast, lunchbox, lunch and dinner. It was only once I grew up (and am now cooking for myself at University) that I realised how much of a sacrifice it was to prepare 4 meals a day for 5 people with such varying tastes and fetishes! Yet she always personalised our meals to make sure we were all getting the things that we loved and enjoyed. That is love. Luckily, nowadays, there are so many ideas around – from cookbooks to food magazines and food blogs. You really don’t have to put any time into figuring out menus and shopping lists anymore; it’s all available at the click of a button! I think that this prevalence of information is what has created the new wave of foodies who actively enjoy being in and around the kitchen. Food has become fun again; it needn’t be complex. The recipe I’m sharing with you this month is just this – super delicious but not complex. It is perfect for the month of love and can be made as a gift or served as a midnight treat or dessert at a special dinner. It is taken from my recipe book, ‘TWO by Seline and Leandri’, which is available nationwide. This recipe is for red wine laced chocolate truffles, which plays off the beauty of combining red wine with chocolate. How yummy… You can control the undertones of your truffles depending on the wine that you choose. For a gentle, fruity taste choose a Cabernet Sauvignon or for a more spicy, fruity taste choose a Syrah or Shiraz.

RED WINE LACED CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES Ingredients: Makes approximately 40 300g dark coverture chocolate (70% or more cacao solids) 140ml good quality red wine 70ml fresh cream pinch of salt 125ml cacao powder for dusting the truffles

Method: 1. In a medium saucepan heat the red wine and the cream until scalding point (this means that it is just below boiling point). 2. Meanwhile, cut the chocolate up into little pieces and place in a heatproof bowl. Add the pinch of salt to help bring out the natural flavours of the chocolate – it might sound strange, but it really works. 3. Pour the scalded wine and cream mixture over the chocolate and let it stand without mixing for at least a minute. This will allow the chocolate to start melting gently and by not mixing it yet you have a smaller chance of the mixture seizing. 4. After a minute, slowly start mixing the chocolate and cream together with a spatula until the chocolate is all melted. You might have difficulty with this in winter due to the external temperature, in which case you can just place the bowl in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time, mixing in between, until the chocolate is melted. 5. Cover the bowl and allow the mixture to set hard in the fridge. 6. Using a little scoop or melon baller, scoop chocolate balls out of the set mixture. Quickly shape them into neat balls with your hands before rolling them through the cacao powder for dusting. 7. To store, line a sealable container with wax paper and place the truffles in it. Store in the fridge, but remove 30 minutes before serving.

CRANACHAN

ATHOLL

TABLET

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

2 tbsp medium oatmeal 300g fresh British raspberries a little caster sugar 350ml double cream (we used Jersey double cream) 2 tbsp heather honey 2-3 tbsp whiskey, to taste

Method: 1. To toast the oatmeal, spread it out on a baking sheet and grill until it smells rich and nutty. It will not darken quickly, so use your sense of smell to tell you when it is nutty enough. Cool the oatmeal. 2. Make a raspberry purée by crushing half the fruit and sieving it. 3. Sweeten this to taste with a little caster sugar. Whisk the double cream until just set and stir in the honey and whisky, trying not to over-whip the cream. 4.Taste the mixture and add more of either if you feel the need. 5. Stir in the oatmeal and whisk lightly until the mixture is just firm. Alternate layers of the cream with the remaining whole raspberries and purée in 4 serving dishes. Allow to chill slightly before eating.

2 1⁄3 cups scotch 1⁄2 cup steel-cut oatmeal 2⁄3 cup heavy cream 1⁄4 cup honey

900g (2 lb) caster sugar 125g (4 1/2 oz) butter 1 tin sweetened condensed milk 150ml (1/4 pt) milk 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Method: 1. Stir scotch and oatmeal in a bowl; cover with cheesecloth. 2. Let it sit in a cool, dark place for two days. Strain into a 1-qt. saucepan. 3. Add heavy cream and honey; bring to a simmer. Serve in heatproof glasses.

Bring to a boil, add vanilla and remove from the heat while stirring all the time; be careful. 4. Electric whisk mixture for 5 minutes; mixture will thicken. 5. Spread mixture in a flat tray and leave to cool for at least 1 hour. Cut into squares and enjoy.

Don’t let them bug you this summer As the temperature rises, our multi-legged friends crawl out of their homes into ours. Summertime is well known for its infestation of critters such as bees, mosquitoes and many more. There is no need for harsh pesticides that will leave your lawn yellow. There are many natural and organic ways to repel pests, or better yet, plants. Be prepared this summer by following these few easy gardening hacks and tricks for a buzz-free environment.

Marigolds

Chrysanthemums

The pungent scent of Marigolds is a surefire to keep insects out of the garden. Keeps aphids and mosquitoes away.

Pyrethrins is a compound that is found in this flower and used in commercial insect repellents. Keeps Roaches, ants, lice, fleas, ticks, beetles, spider mites away.

Pennyroyal

Lavender The same scent that calms us with its aromatic smells disgusting to critters. Keeps fleas, flies, moths, mosquitoes away.

The Pennyroyal flower is a natural mosquito repellent. It also keeps fleas away.

Petunias

Geranium

These joyful beauties must be planted in a sunny spot or window box. Keeps beetles, squash bugs and tomato hornworms away.

This is a beautiful flowering plant that will help repel mosquitos. These blossoms will keep away any biting insects.

Allium family

Basil

(chives, onions, leeks, shallots) They help protect other veggies and the rest of the garden against slugs, carrot flies and cabbage worms.

Basil contains oil that kills mosquito eggs. Plant it in pots in gathering areas. Keeps away houseflies and mosquitos.

Garlic

Mint, rosemary

Although eating garlic does not repel mosquitos, it protects your flower beds against them. Also keeps aphids and whiteflies away.

These herbs will help protect your vegetable plants from infestation and helps repel biting insects like mosquitoes.

Lemon Thyme

Dill

Lemon Thyme keeps whiteflies, maggots, tomato hornworms and cabbage loopers away.

Dill is the perfect companion plant. It keeps away squash bugs, spider mites, cabbage loopers and tomato hornworms.

Tip for the kitchen: There must be a few jam jars in the cupboard? Make a small window jam jar herb garden with basil, thyme and rosemary. This will help keep away the annoying critters buzzing around the kitchen at dinnertime.

KOM ONS SPEEL WEER! Speel is ‘n baba se heel belangrikste aktiwiteit! Moedig

in.
