NEW ROOF AT LYNWOOD GATE PROGRESS Construction work at the Lynwood Gate has been finalised. The new roof structure has been erected and completed, and is now operational. The appropriate matching signage has been ordered and will be erected during May. Construction work on the new emergency access road & sliding gate has been completed, and these are operational. After official arrangement with the Tshwane Local Municipality, they dispatched two of their emergency vehicles (fire trucks) to our estate and assessed the emergency access facility. We are proud to report that the functionality is very successful. We will now continue to improve the amended access way and re-fit the access gates to the post boxes, operations offices and the garages. Residents, please be aware that the emergency vehicles can enter and exit both of our main entrance gates without constraints. Our security officials are alert, prepared, and trained to operate the emergence access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We thank our security staff for their effective co-operation and alertness. Keep up the good work. We thank all our residents for their co-operation during these developments. Some updated images:

Telkom - Fibre to the Home installation As you already know, the big coils (with green pipe sleeves) visible on the estate form part of the FibreToThe Home (FTTH) installation being done by Telkom. The appointed contractor commenced work on the Estate on 3 May by cleaning the existing infrastructure. There are manholes in existing infrastructure via which the installation will be done. They have also commenced the installation of the green pipes (sleeves) where ready. After the sleeves have been installed, Some images:

they will ‘blow’ the fibre optic cable into the newly installed pipe sleeves. We are aware that there are instances where existing infrastructure is lacking/damaged/not accessible. In such instances and also when crossing roads, walkways, etc., trenching will be necessary for installation. This will be minimised as best possible; however, site conditions will dictate this. The installation will be done in stages throughout the estate, and it is estimated to be completed by August. Connection to individual homes will be done once the network is live.

CORLIA MATHEWS ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR

Silver Lakes Golf Estate As you are reading this, we are already well into winter in the month of June. It is a lot colder after the wonderful weather of the Easter holidays and the long weekends. We had some late autumn rains for that last bit of wetness before we started our dry and cold winter season, but as you all know, like us humans, it is good for all creatures to rest for a bit. The plants will be in their winter phase of slow or no growth as well as of rest. Some, like the white stinkwood trees, lose all their leaves, while others, like the karee (Rhus), are semi-deciduous and lose their leaves bit by bit. We will, however, be busy with the winter programme in the gardens, and Adriaan and Eddie with their Garden Group teams will be tidying up the gardens, pruning the roses mid-winter, and removing reeds and weeds from the dams. Garden Group and Servest will do this in a combined effort. We will also be planting some gardens where we are busy with new developments so that all the gardens can be ready and prepared for summer and the new growing season at the end of the year. We had a request to look into the use of Roundup on our golf course, and while we were busy enquiring about the safety thereof, the staff applied Roundup to some areas right in front of the property of the homeowner who had requested the enquiry. I apologise profusely for this oversight. We did not have any information at that time and it was out of order to use the product.

water, we have staff specially coming in at night to come and water the gardens. Regarding our dams As you all know, we have been having some problems with the infestation of grassy weeds in our dams, especially in the dam on the 5th and the one in the game reserve. It was wrongly reported in the previous Intra Muros that the grass is ‘Fine Oxygen Weed’, or Lagarosiphon muscoides, where it is in fact ‘Ceratophyllum demersum’, also known as ‘coon tail’ because the plant looks like the tail of a raccoon, or ‘hornwort’. The report we have received on the weed and the treatment of the infestation is that it is not a very aggressive plant. The plant grows in slow-moving water – this is the reason why it is growing in the dam on the 5th and in the first part of the dam in the game reserve. These plants are free-floating and do not have a root system. It has been suggested that it is ecologically sound not to remove all the plants since this plant is allopathic, which means it removes all the blue and green algae from the water. These we have plentiful of in Silver Lakes, meaning it will actually clean our waters as it has been doing in the dams on the 5th and in the game reserve. If you go and have a look, you will see the water is crystal clear. It will also not spread to the other parts of the dams where there is quickerflowing water.

Please accept our sincerest apologies. In the meantime, we have done some homework, and the product seems to be less bad for one’s heath than the amounts of coffee I drink. However, I will have a deeper insight and report back in the next Intra Muros after I have received some more inputs. We will still be using Roundup on the estate, since it has been proven to be non-harmful by all the official bodies, but I must reiterate that we will use it carefully and in areas where there is lower traffic of pedestrians, especially children. Just as a matter of public knowledge, we do not use more than 20 litres of Roundup per year on the golf course.

We are looking at ways to remove the weed as efficiently as possible, taking out parts and leaving some behind to help clean the water.

To address another contentious issue, the watering of the gardens during the day is from dam water. We DO NOT use municipal water for daily irrigation. For the areas which are watered by municipal

The use of chemicals to inhibit the spreading of the plants into all our dams is also under investigation and will only be applied and used after thorough research has been done by our experts on the estate.

Suggestions of emptying the dam and removing as much of the plants as possible in the winter season will be investigated, as well as other biological ways to combat the weed such as grass carp. We will apply with the Department of Environmental Affairs for the implementation of this practice since we will need a license to introduce sterile grass carp into our dams.

These images display some areas which we found to be the problem areas. We are doing everything in our power to fix the problem and making it safe for all.

We will, as promised, investigate this thoroughly and report to the Environmental Committee before anything is done. Only products that offer no risk to fish or other aquatic life and are registered for use in an aquatic environment will be used. Again, all these factors will be considered by experts and officials before anything is done. Another issue is regarding the registration of our dams and boreholes. This is being confirmed through the correct government channels, and the relevant documents will be in place and verified by the time of the publication of this article. We have obtained legal opinions and used approved consultants for this documentation to be verified and updated. As you may well know, The National Water Act of 1998 came into effect on 1 October 1998. I have a copy of this document in my possession and if you would like to scrutinize it, please feel free to contact me. Before this law, it was legal to build the Silver Lakes dams, extract water from boreholes, and remove the reeds and our existing weeds from the rivers and lakes without permission. Article 32 and 34 of the Act provides that a person may continue to use water that was lawfully used when the law took effect. This will include the construction of dams, storage and impounding of water in the dams, and the withdrawal of the water wells. No permission for this is necessary.

If more than 10 cubic meters of water is withdrawn per day from the boreholes or if 10,000 cubic water is stored on a registered property (this numbers may be a little different in some cases), such use must be registered with the Department of Water Affairs in terms of section 26 (1) ( c) of the new Act. The registration is new; the previous law did not have such a requirement. Registration is not the confirmation of a right. In our case, the confirmation of our water rights are contained in articles 32 and 34 of the Act, which had to be done by Ampros when registering the project before even developing Silver Lakes. Registration is simply aimed to help the State Department determine where and how water is used. So, the change that has occurred is that the National Water Act now requires that certain water uses must be registered when it was not required under the old law. The removal of the reeds and water weed grasses out of the rivers and lakes might be classified as a water use. We will investigate if a general authorization will authorize this. If not, we will get a license. We will also be building our first signature street corners, which were approved by city council and are in the process of tendering and allocating the actual work. We are all looking forward to having some unifying design elements on the estate. We are a large and diverse estate as already mentioned numerous times in the past, but we will strive to use simplicity and repetitive ele-

ments to create a unifying canvas for our homes, in this way adding value to all the property on the estate through creating a well-tended and cared-for look and feel.

area at the children’s play area into an area we can be proud of and bring our children to enjoy. Here we are also still in the process of getting quotes.

One of our main design efforts will be to tidy up the Silver Lakes Drive entrance and the whole experience of entering our estate through this ‘new’ gate with its new roof.

As you will see from Dr Thinus Basson’s article in this Intra Muros, we have received the sable antelope and waterbuck. The newly-planted veldt is also looking good. We will obviously have to feed our game in the cold winter months, but Ollie and his team, together with Dr Douw Grobler and Peter Kekana, are passionate about looking after our game.

The entrance, sidewalk of Silver Lakes Drive, sidewalks, and the corners of Pebble Beach will be redesigned so that one will have an experience of tranquility and excitement when one enters the estate tranquility since you are home and safe, and excitement to be home and to be on our beautiful estate. For the golfers to go and play their game of golf on our fantastic course. To be walking, cycling, playing on the estate. To be visiting the game reserve, fishing at the designated areas, using the facilities at the Club to play tennis, squash, soccer, at the kiddies play areas, or just to come and have a meal at our beautiful new restaurant, Café41. More good news is that our ‘way leave’ application to make the little island outside the Silver Lakes Drive gate, which hampers so many homeowners on their way out in the mornings, is in the final part of its application, and approval is imminent. Thanks a million to everybody for their patience!

Many thanks to all of them, but especially to the Working Group who are doing so much for the game reserve! Dr Pieter Odendaal and Douw have been instrumental in the acquisition of the new sable antelope and waterbuck, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. They are truly spectacular animals. Dr Basson will tell you more about the new arrivals and our new baby animals on the estate - some springbuck, 2 kudu and a Nyala. Go for a walk and meet them. Enjoy the winter months and keep preparing your gardens and repairing your homes in the ‘no-rain’ season. Corlia Mathews Environmental and Aesthetic Director

MONTHLY AGRONOMY NEWSLETTER

by: Andrew McKenna

The month of March saw us getting some wonderful rain which helped tremendously. In an attempt to get the drought damage as knitted as possible, all weak/bare areas in the fairways and semi-rough were hollowtined, topdressed and fertilized.

During the rainy period, another application was done on the worst areas again.

The grow–in of the tees at No 6 continued, and they were also topdressed and fertilized with lots of TLC. The end goal was to have them playable for the Club Champs, and there was a bit of work to be done on them. All the work on the course was aimed for the dates of the Club Champs and the Mid Amateur. The way we do this is by taking the tournament date and working backwards, filling in the processes that need to be completed with recovery periods so that filled in so that the end result is predictable and achievable. This puts a lot of pressure on the staff as any process not completed in time due to weather, golf days etc., throws the entire programme out.

These programs are done for any large event the club may host, and for some, including me, tournament prep becomes an addictive process! Nature has been indicating that the summer season is drawing to a close, although according to the meteorological office, this March was the hottest March... Cooler mornings and evenings is prime growing time for the Bent and of course the Poa, and we are very mindful of this. Because of this we start reducing the watering on the greens, and unfortunately the greens do become a bit harder in winter, and we start receiving a lot of complaints about the greens being like concrete. My only advice to the golfers is to treat the winter a bit like Links golf and club one less to land your approach shot just short of the green and go from there. As I am sure you have seen, we have also started to sod out the Cynodon around the edges of the greens. Initially we were concerned about the Champs and the Mid Amateur, but the decision was made that this was to be started immediately. This process will continue through the winter, but the good news is that the Cynodon goes completely dormant now so while we are busy, the grass will not spread anymore.

We have found some interesting tree roots in the greens though; at No 1, on the right - hand side, some of the roots were thicker than a man’s thumb ,extending a fair distance under the playing surfaces. This will have to be addressed in the future. During the next couple of weeks, most of the work on the course will be geared towards the Club Champs and the Mid Am. When these have been completed, our aim will shift to the various winter projects on the cards. More of this in the coming months. Happy golfing!
 Andrew

MATURE GOLFERS UPDATE TO ALL ASPIRING SENIOR GOLFERS It seems unbelievable that we are already nearly halfway through the year. In spite of this and the fact that the winter is virtually upon us, the Silver Lakes Golf Course is still in wonderful shape – us senior golfers are all looking forward to the winter fairways when the balls roll that extra 30 to 40 meters! Our first away game for 2016 was at the Highland Gate Golf Course in Dullstroom on 07 & 08 April. Here are the results of the first day of the competitions. Individual Stableford Winner: Eugene Visagie (39), with Fernando Vieira close on his heels (37). Two Ball Better Ball: Won by FX Roome & Eugene Visagie with a score of 46, followed by Fernando Vieira & André Smit with a score of 44. 4-Ball Alliance: Won by Rolf Hauter/Steve Greyling/Johan Grobbelaar/Niek Hollander with a total of 87, with Eugene Visagie/FX Roome/Eddie Orsmond/André Basson close behind with a total of 84. Any men over the age of 50 who would be interested in playing golf every Thursday morning at Silver Lakes with a large group of aspiring and interesting “Mature Golfers” are most welcome – no membership fees are applicable. The format of play is Individual Stableford, with the exception of the first Thursday of every month when the format is a “Two Ball Better Ball” and the third Thursday when the format is a “Four Ball Alliance”. Prizes are given for closest to the pins on the Par 3 holes as well as for the least number of shots on the Par 5 18th hole. We also run an annual individual knockout competition during which the guys compete for two wonderful trophies. The Mature Golfers now even play in their own unique golf shirts. We meet every Thursday at 07h00 in the winter months and the first guys tee off at 07h30 – we do the draw at 07h15. It is important that all the golfers who intend to play on a particular Thursday put their names down at the Silver Lakes Golf Shop (Tel No. 012 809 0430) by noon at the latest on the Wednesday before.

2016 KIA Silver Lakes Club Championships by: Andrew McKenna

The 2016 KIA Silver Lakes Club Championships was yet again an amazing event. A huge entry (the biggest that I’ve known), fantastic weather, great course conditions, and a really exciting finish with an unbelievable crowd surrounding the first hole for the play - off all culminated in Alain Norris taking the title for the second time, and the first time since 2003. It looked like Keegan McLachlan was cruising to victory for the second year in a row until a surprising double bogey on the 16th while Alain was calmly making his birdie on 18 in the group in front. Suddenly Keegan went from 2 ahead with 3 to go to being 1 behind standing on the 18th tee. After a tee shot that came treacherously close to going into the hazard off the tee, Keegan coolly hit the 18th green in 2. His ball trickled over the back and he got up and down to force the play - off. Unfortunately for Keegan, a bogey on the first extra hole gave Alain the chance to hole from 3 feet, winning nonchalantly.

Competition news The SA Mid Amateur Championships
As in the past few years, we have been asked to host one of SA’s most prestigious amateur events, the SA Mid Amateur Championships. This championship aims to find the best 30-50-year-old golfer in SA.
The event will run from 02 May until 06 May, and the course and driving range will be closed for the duration of the event. As with any national championships, all golf clubs in the country offer reciprocity to our members for the duration of the event, so either come to the club and watch, or take the opportunity to go and play your favourite course at members’ rates. Just to reiterate, the driving range at Silver Lakes will be closed for our members for the whole week, Monday to Friday.

Tread softly, birds are living here by Koos Marais

It was an almost bizarre moment… For a few years the white-faced ducks were only rarely seen in Silver Lakes, but over the last two years we have experienced a healthy influx of these shy and beautiful creatures. Their friendly whistles overhead have become a daily feature of life in our estate. Then, that morning, on my way to work and stuck in the traffic jam creeping along the pot-holed road that is Silver Lakes drive, I spotted the waddling family of ducks on the eastern side, right next to the road. The fluffy little ones, all huddled together, were only a few days old and their mother was standing guard while all the cars crawled along. I caught myself almost choking with fear for their safety. Every day hundreds of cars drive on this road, some at great speed, and the chances of them surviving even that day were less than optimal, to say the least. I counted seven brown-golden feathery balls excluding the mother, proudly sporting her white, brown and black dress. What a wonderful family, soon to come to grief, no doubt, I shuddered. I continued my journey, electing to actively shut out the inevitable demise of this little miracle from my consciousness. After all, there are hundreds of them, and life is not fair… it happens

every minute of the day, and there are far greater tragedies than a few white-faced ducks killed while crossing the road, I kept telling myself. Somehow that incongruous sight insisted on haunting me for a longer time than I cared to admit. I just loved them and my mind kept wandering back to the happy but scared little family. Over the course of the next three weeks I saw and heard many of my white-faced feathered friends all over the estate. Their numbers seem to be increasing without the concomitant nuisance brought about by the plague-like numbers of the Egyptian geese that we all are so familiar with. The population of white-faced ducks is indeed healthy in our area, but that fact did nothing to drive away my concern for that little group of that morning, next to that busy road. What had happened to them? The little stream running underneath the access road feeds water from one of the dams on our neigbouring estate, Silver Streams’ grounds, to my favourite dam, the little one to the south of the 14th hole’s tee area. The water runs in a culvert below the surface of the big pot-holed road, providing an easy avenue of movement for any young swimming or wading chicks who are not yet able to use their wings to good effect. It is quite logical that this family of white-faced ducks had moved

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

from their nesting area on the fringes of our dam through the culvert and out to the hostile outside world of one of the busiest roads in eastern Pretoria – a tragedy waiting to happen.

If we drive carefully in order to care for our wildlife, we will also minimise the risk to our own children’s lives.

Then, one early autumn morning my heart jumped with joy when I saw them once more. I was overjoyed to count eight of them; in other words, mum and all seven of her offspring. She and six of them were merrily swimming about in our dam, my favourite one, but one little chick was waiting in the shallows. Eventually they made their way back to the little loner. When they exited the water I realised why this one had not joined in the fun. He struggled to walk and lagged far behind his siblings and mother marching away. Well, at least he was still alive! They had all somehow managed to survive the mad rush of cars in Silver Lakes drive, but by some means the laggard had become injured. I jogged away with mixed feelings – glad they all had made it, but nevertheless saddened by the sight of the crippled chick. Every time I jog past the little dam I inspect the fringes for the group, and finally, a month after my last sighting, I saw them again and nervously counted heads. We had lost one, but the vigour and cuteness of the six other young adults sort of made up for it. All it would have taken was one reckless driver to wipe out the entire brace. That did not happen. We are privileged to live in this special environment, teeming with birds and wild animals, but it comes with a responsibility.

A Year in Silver Lakes, the coffee table book The production process of our own prestigious, full colour coffee table book is well under way. It contains images and stories of the animals, birds, fish and reptiles of our game reserve, dams, gardens and the golf course. It is intended to raise public awareness of the uniqueness of our estate’s natural beauty and will be an extremely valuable marketing instrument. We are now inviting corporate and individual sponsors in the form of gold, platinum and silver subscribers. All subscribers’ names will be imprinted in the book and they will receive complimentary copies. Please send an e-mail to kosiemarais@gmail.com if you are interested in becoming a partner in this exciting project.

ENJOY A GAME DRIVE IN SILVER LAKES AND SAVE ON THAT WEEKEND AWAY News From The Game Reserve We are proud to confirm that the long - awaited sable antelope and waterbuck are now safely at home in our Silver Lakes Game Reserve. Again our appreciation to Dr Pieter Odendaal for the loan of his sable antelope – three gracious young males – for our residents to enjoy. Also great thanks to Dr Douw Grobler for arranging the purchase of the waterbuck. Two prime specimens – one male and one female. Hopefully there will be a young one next season!

We are trying to obtain a few more rare species to further enhance the enjoyment factor of the Game Reserve, and thereby also to improve the overall value offering of Silver Lakes. It will be appreciated if you could inform us of further prime species of game that may be available. In the next issue we will share some thoughts on how our residents could help to ensure the well-being of our game, and on the prevention and management of wild fires.

The Silver Lakes Game Reserve now proudly boasts the following species (roughly from small to large): • • • • • • • • • • • •

Steenbuck Grey Duiker Springbuck Impala Reedbuck Mountain Reedbuck Bushbuck Blesbuck Waterbuck Nyala Sable antelope Kudu

Take a game drive or go on the hiking trails and see how many of these you can spot.

Sheer Driving Pleasure

THE COOK ON THE CORNER A PUNCH OF PASSION I’m a huge fan of eating within the seasons and have spent a lot of my life explaining this to people. Mostly I love how vibrant and tasty food is when it is in season. At this time of year, we’re reaching the end of the season for passion fruit, and I’ve been desperately looking for ways in which to preserve this fruit to last me a little longer in the year. Passion fruit is one of my favourite fruits; it is so fresh, almost a little citrus-like and truly unique. These beautiful little fruits pack such a flavour punch that the addition of it to a recipe or a dish can hardly ever go unnoticed. I wanted to make a dessert in which this stunning fruit is given the opportunity to shine – enter this delectable passion fruit cake with a passion fruit curd and Italian meringue topping! Italian meringue is pretty much like the inside of a Sweetie Pie treat. Clouds of egg white are cooked with a super-hot syrup, whipping it to perfection. This makes it safe for pregnant ladies, and what’s more, it’s totally fat free! I love these kinds of recipes – the textures, flavours and the punch of passion fruit complement one another perfectly. I actually served this cake at a dinner party recently and it was a hit. Seline van der Wat If you want to add a layer of richness and luxury, you can ser ve it alongside a scoop of the best vanilla ice cream you can find.

Passion fruit cake with Italian meringue and a tangy passion fruit curd Ingredients: For the cake: 250g flour 2 tsp baking powder 2.5ml salt 250ml double thick Greek yoghurt 200g caster sugar 3 extra-large eggs 125ml canola oil 6 fresh passion fruit 1. Get your oven to temperature (180 degrees) while you make the batter for the cake. 2. Cut the passion fruit in half and spoon out the

fruit into a sieve placed above a bowl. Press all the liquid through the sieve using a spatula. Discard the black pips. 3. Add the yoghurt, castor sugar, eggs and oil to the bowl and whisk together until well combined. 4. Add the cake flour, baking powder and salt, and mix until combined (with no lumps). 5. Grease two 20cm cake tins and divide the batter between the two. 6. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until the cake pulls away from the sides and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. 7. Allow the sponge to cool before removing from the tin. For the Italian meringue: 105g egg whites 225g castor sugar 70g water

1. Combine the water and sugar in a small saucepan and place on a low heat. Stir until dissolved. Once dissolved, crank up the heat and boil the sugar syrup until it reaches 108 degrees on a sugar thermometer. 2. Meanwhile, place the egg whites into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a balloon whisk. 3. When the sugar syrup is at 108 degrees, start whipping the egg whites until stiff. If you do this on a medium speed, the egg whites will be stiff by the time the sugar reaches 118 degrees. 4. Once the syrup is at 118 degrees, slowly pour the syrup into the egg whites, pouring it down the side of the bowl and not directly into the whisk, with the whisk sill running on a medium speed. Beat until the mixture reaches room temperature. Place in a piping bag ready for icing. For the passion fruit curd: 3 lemons (rind and juice) 100g butter 250g castor sugar 4 passion fruit 4 eggs 1. Combine the lemon rind, juice, butter and castor sugar in a medium saucepan. Place on a medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. 2. Push the passion fruit pulp through a sieve to break up all the bits and sacks. Add the juice to the lemon mixture and add as much of the pips as you’d like (I’d suggest half). 3. Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Once the lemon mixture has come to the boil, remove the pot from the heat and slowly whisk into the eggs. 4. Strain the mixture through a sieve back into the pot. Stir constantly with a spatula, making sure that no egg cooks onto the bottom of the pot. 5. Continue to cook on a low to medium heat until the mixture becomes so thick that it coats the back of the spatula. 6. Use the curd immediately or store in a glass jar in the fridge To assemble the cake: Pipe dots of Italian meringue around the edge of the bottom tier. Spoon a generous amount of passion fruit curd into the center and place the top sponge on top. Pipe more dots of Italian meringue on the top of the cake and lightly blowtorch the points. Serve with some extra passion fruit curd for those who like a sour kick. You can store leftover curd in a glass jar in the fridge for up to two weeks.

In last month’s article we saw that grasses have become very popular in landscape design. We looked at four different types of grasses – the grass family, sedges, rushes and indigenous restios. Why use ornamental grasses? • Ornamental grass is versatile and can be used either as a speci men plant or in mass planting. • The contrast with other foliage is striking. • The plants add colour to a garden that is not static and often changes with the seasons. • It is successfully used to soften hard landscaping elements. • Butterflies and birds are attracted to the garden. Grass leaves as well as the flowers and seeds are a food source.

and is usually treated as deciduous. Regular irrigation is needed. Melinus nerviglomis (indigenous) has shiny pink inflorescences fading to white. These provide nesting material for birds and the plants will flower throughout summer. The mature grass grows to 30cm in summer, is deciduous and grows well from seed. It needs moist soil until established, but plants will survive with irregular irrigation. Untidy growth needs to be cleared with deciduous grasses. Cut the old plant material down to soil level as soon as new growth shows in early spring. This would also be the best time for clump division.

In this month’s article, we will take a look at some more types of grasses and their growth patterns.

A CLUMP A clump is the growth habit of a very large number of grass species. Planting masses of these grasses effectively fills space at ground level, and the flowers give them their unique character. Carex varieties are good evergreen clump grasses and should be planted close enough to allow complete soil cover as mature plants, but be careful to avoid overcrowding. These plants prefer moist soil conditions, and in Gauteng they will even benefit from afternoon shade. Little maintenance is required, and damaged leaves can be removed individually. Combing out loose foliage is easily done by hand. Do not cut them back to soil level without reason as these plants are slow growers and will take some time to regrow new leaves. Clump division can be done in summer when these plants grow vigorously. Aristida junciformis (indigenous) grows to 1m in summer, and it has light purple flower plumes. This grass is successfully used in mass planting, but being a deciduous plant, it is more useful in background planting or between evergreen plants. Moist soil is required until established and thereafter the plants will be able to withstand dry spells. Pennisetum setaceum “rubrum” loses its purple leave colour in winter

BAMBOO Bamboo, usually graceful and tall, is the opposite of clump grasses. Single plants can be used as a focal point or to form a screen for privacy, and smaller varieties planted in groups supply texture and depth in garden design. The invasive growth habit of some varieties can be curbed by planting in pots. Frequent watering is vital, especially during hot and dry weather. Lack of water is the main limiting factor when growing bamboo in containers, and the plants will benefit from cool and shady conditions. Little maintenance is required and removing old canes can improve the appearance. Subdividing the rhizomes is easy and usually done in summer. Horse tail bamboo (Equisetum hyemale) grows to 1m, will be deciduous in cold areas and looks exquisite in containers. Gaint bamboo (Phyllostachus pubescens) can grow to a height of 28m and is tolerant to cold. Although spectacular, this plant is not suitable for suburban gardens due to its size and extensive rhizome root system.

Garden know how: Few ornamental grasses will tolerate arid conditions. They have different water requirements to succulents. Choose species for your garden carefully to prevent disappointment.

Why Business Owners should include Financial Planning in their Business Strategy. Sacrificing special holidays and spending any spare time on their business’ affairs is a trait of most business owners. But many become too busy working in the business; they forget to work on the business, say Marius Spies and Johan Brits, Sanlam Financial Planners at BluCrest BlueStar Financial Advisory Services. Working on the business means you don’t lose your objective for starting the business in the first place. For most business owners, it is to create a livelihood for themselves and to use this asset as a wealth creation vehicle that will leave a legacy for generations to come. To ensure that business demands don’t divert you from your objective, strategic planning becomes crucial. Strategic financial planning in particular ensures that your plans aren’t diverted or halted by risks that you canidentify and mitigate. Such risks include, but are not limited to,the possibility of you or your business partner(s) dying or becoming permanently disabled as well as needing to finance the replacement of a key member in your staff. Every business’ circumstances are different. A strategic financial plan takes into account your specific goals and circumstances. It also reflects the phase of your business. As the business grows, it should take into account its changing risks and capital needs. Strategic financial planning is not just another pillar you can add along the way as the business grows. It’s the foundation from which all your other business pillars should be built. Everything you do in your business – from the moment you open its doors – requires you to have a financial planning strategy. If you neglect that aspect, unforeseen circumstances and difficult times might hit you harder. The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (SAICA) insights report into affairs of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) , which was published in 2015, showed that the main reasons for start-ups to fail within the first three years of establishment are

overwhelmingly cash-flow related. SAICA pointed out that lack of financial planning and control was effectively at the heart of many cash-flow challenges. Many business owners acknowledge that strategic financial planning is critical to their success, but few realise that it should be inherent in their business plan rather than responding to financial challenges as and when they surface. Strategic planning for a business is comprehensive and should include the operations plan and cash-flow management strategy as well as identifying and mitigating all potential risks. Mitigating financial planning related risks is usually one of the most neglected aspects, especially when businesses experience cash-flow challenges. For instance, face-to-face interviews by Sanlam with 200 business owners showed a large number did not have insurance in place to finance personal sureties signed for business debt. During a tough business cycle, many business owners sacrifice their surety insurance as they try to stretch their cash-flow between many competing business input costs. But, tough economic times call for business owners to stick to their guns more than at any other time. After all, it will be much harder to deal with the blow if the inevitable should happen.

Are you ready to address risks associated to your business? A 1-2-3 of Business analysis offers a lucid approach to a severely neglected part of risk management in business. Your business provides for many people – for you and your family, your management team and your employees. But what if things go wrong? People depend on you financially, loans need to be serviced, there are sureties, buy-and-sell agreements, and key people you depend on ... What’s more, you can become disabled or die unexpectedly. Contact us, your Sanlam Financial Planners at BluCrest BlueStar Financial Advisory Services, at 012 470 0850 or support@blucrest.co.za to guide you through the decisions you need to make to ensure a secure financial future for you, your dependants and your business.

ANGER MANAGEMENT DR ILSE RUANE PSYCHOLOGY

Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life.

problems. Memories of traumatic or enraging events can also trigger feelings of anger.

It can make you feel as though you’re at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. Anger can be caused by both external and internal events.

The instinctive way to express anger is to respond aggressively. After all, anger is a natural, adaptive response to threats; it inspires powerful, often aggressive, feelings and behaviours which allow us to fight and to defend ourselves when we are attacked. A certain amount of anger, therefore, is necessary for our survival.

You could be angry at a specific person (such as a co-worker or supervisor) or event (a traffic jam, a cancelled flight), or your anger could be caused by worrying or brooding about your personal

On the other hand, we can’t physically lash out at every person or object that irritates or annoys us as laws, social norms, and common sense place limits on how far our anger can take us.

WHAT IS ANGER? Anger is an emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage. Anger triggers the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response. Other emotions that trigger this response include fear, excitement, and anxiety. During an anger outburst, the adrenal glands flood the body with stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. The body reacts by prioritising blood towards the muscles, in preparation for physical exertion. Heart rate, blood pressure and respiration increase, the body temperature rises, and the skin perspires. The mind becomes sharpened and focused on the task at hand. However, the constant flood of stress hormones and the associated metabolic changes that go with recurrent unmanaged anger can eventualy cause harm to many different systems of the body. The more common physical effects of anger include numbness,

sweating, muscle tensions and temperature changes to the body. Long - term physical effects of anger can be serious as it can lead to headaches, disgestion problems, insomina and other more serious medical issues such as anxiety, high blood pressure, depressions, heart attacks and strokes.

Tips to manage anger

• If you feel out of control, walk away from the situation until you have cooled down. • Recognise and accept the emotion as normal and part of life. • Try to pinpoint the exact reasons why you are feeling angry. • Once you have identified the problem, consider coming up with a different strategy to deal with the situation. • Do something physical such as going for a walk/run.

Therapeutic Anger Management The goal of anger management in therapy is to reduce both your emotional feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes. You can’t get rid of or avoid the things or the people that enrage you, nor can you change them, but you can learn to control your reactions as well as increase your coping strategies. Some examples are as follows:

Relaxation Simple relaxation tools such as deep breathing and relaxing imagery can help calm down angry feelings.

Problem Solving Use conflict resolution techniques to solve problems.

Better Communication Combine good listening skills with good expression skills.

Changing Sources of Stress When you become aware of a constant source of stress, consider whether it is possible to change something within.
