People, Pets and Parking – the three P’s of Community Management

Kathy O’Connor and I attended the Association of Residential Communities’ annual conference, hosted by Midstream Estates, at the end of July. Once again, it was a well-organised two-day event that coincided with the first ARC Expo showcasing the products and services of the many service providers to the residential community industry.

ter interruptions of late, which are a source of irritation and inconvenience and by all accounts are going to become a more regular occurrence going forward. The reasons for the interruptions experienced vary from a lack of regular maintenance on the existing infrastructure to the upgrading of the bulk water reservoirs in the Bronberg.

Several international guests were amongst the 150 delegates at the conference, which was both informative and thought-provoking regarding the many issues that are currently affecting or will in future affect our communities.

These upgrades are necessary to accommodate the increased demand for services as our surrounding areas develop. We are in contact with the relevant Tshwane officials and departments as soon as a problem occurs and try our level best to manage any scheduled interruptions proactively.

Referring to the three P’s mentioned above, Silver Lakes does not seem to have too many issues with regard to parking, but we certainly have our fair share of people and pet-related matters! Living in a community such as ours insulates us from many of the day-to-day happenings in an open suburb, but at what expense? It sometimes seems that we are not only insulating ourselves from the outside world, but also from our neighbours. From the HOA’s perspective, we are often the first point of contact should one of our residents have a problem or complaint about their neighbour, and from our recent experiences this is often about something that could have been sorted out amicably between the residents without involving the HOA’s staff and resources. We are always available to assist and do so with pleasure to ensure all our residents experience Silver Lakes as their own piece of paradise. But, at the same time, we simply request that residents attempt to communicate more with each other to resolve their differences before involving the HOA. Silver Lakes has also experienced a number of wa-

Besides the water supply interruptions, the quality of the supply is going to become more of a problem for consumers in future. One of the expert speakers at the ARC conference was Dr Anthony Turton, who provided a very sobering prediction on the water issues South Africa will be facing in the medium term. In effect, the state is shifting its responsibility for assurance of water supply onto Body Corporates, Home Owners Associations and others, and it will be up to us to ensure the quality and quantity of supply. This is a long-term plan, but it is something that we will have to start factoring into our budgeting and future levy contributions within the next few years. I would lastly continue to encourage residents to communicate with me should there be any issues you would like to bring to our attention. Please feel free to make an appointment via my assistant Michele on (012) 809-0142 or secretary@silverlakes.co.za. Regards Jan

History of

Ernie Els by: Yolandi Annandale

Theodore Ernest Els, also known as Ernie Els, is a South African professional golf player. Ernie was born on 17 October 1969 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was a real sports fanatic in school and played cricket, rugby, tennis and golf at the age of 8. At the age of 13 Ernie won the Eastern Transvaal Junior Championships in Tennis. His golf career began when he started playing with his father, Neels Els, at the Kempton Park Country Club. He soon played even better than his father. At 14 years of age he was a scratch handicap. He enjoyed golf so much that he decided to quit the other sports and just focus on his golf. Ernie married his wife Liezl in 1998 and they have two children, Ben and Samantha. After discovering their son is autistic, they habitually go to Jupiter, Florida, where they have a second family home, in order to get better treatment for their son. Ernie also started carrying a logo on his golf bag that says “Autism Speaks”.

ERNIE ELS’ PROFESSIONAL CAREER

Ernie Els has as many as 70 victories in his professional golf career. Some of these victories are Major Championships, World Golf Championships and a Match Play title. Not only does he have victories in many Championships, but also in many countries such as South Africa, Europe, US, Asia, Far East, the Middle East and Australia. In 2009 Ernie was initiated into the South African Golf Hall of Fame and in 2011 he was initiated into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Some of Ernie’s notable records for his golfing include holding the record for the player with the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking as well as the most consecutive cuts made on the European Tour. Ernie holds records for the lowest 72-hole total relative to par, the lowest first 36-hole total relative to par, the lowest first 54-hole total relative to par, most birdies in one round, and the lowest round in the European Tour. He was also twice no.1 in the Race to Dubai and three-time Player of the Year in the European Tour. In 1994 Ernie was Rookie of the Year in the PGA tour. He has 9 career holes-in-one and has represented South Africa in Professional Team Golf on 22 occasions.

ERNIE ELS DESIGN

Ernie has his own Golf Course Design Company, formed in 2000. All of his victories and hard work shine through in his global designs. The designs result in signature courses and renovations. The most experienced designers work with Ernie and are led by architect Greg Letsche. The company is based in both South Africa and Florida, where Ernie lives, with more offices in Malaysia and Dubai. Ernie was voted ‘Designer of the year’ in 2015 at the World Golf Awards. Ernie has also won some other awards like ‘Best New Golf Course’ for the Els Club Teluk Datai in 2014. This course was the first to be listed in the Ernie Els design portfolio.

The driving force? Mrs Jeanne Todd initiated this fund and convinced the then Chairman, Mr Pieter Page, of the importance of having such a fund. Since 2004, this fund has helped many different causes and continues to assist those in need. Thank you to Mrs Todd for all her hard work and for her enthusiasm in making sure we help as many needy causes as possible.

Social Responsibility Fund

CALENDAR OF ANNUAL EVENTS FOR 2016

What is the Social Responsibility Fund? It is a fund that helps those who are in need. A total of R8125 per month (approximately R5 per unit) is transferred into this fund from levies. Money is then donated to worthy causes.

Who benefits? Some of the beneficiaries include: - Danville Project This is a project run by a small group of volunteers with the purpose of providing food, clothing and accommodation for the needy people of Danville. The eventual goal is to uplift the community through self-help projects.

- Action for the Blind This organisation is situated in central Roodepoort and is dedicated to training and teaching blind and disabled young people about computers.

- SPCA Amongst other things, programmes that are run to sterilise cats and dogs that live in poor communities are supported.

SEPTEMBER 10 September, Saturday Spring Day Fun Day OCTOBER 31 October, Monday Halloween/Trick or Treat NOVEMBER 18 November, Friday Garden Competition 25 November, Friday Christmas Celebration DECEMBER 6 December, Tuesday Summer Night Run

- Huis Silversig This old age home, situated in Silverton, looks after the aged and disabled.

- The Caddies A hamper of various goodies is given to the caddies on at least an annual basis.

- Jacaranda Children’s Home This home is a non-profit organisation that looks after the welfare of abused children. The primary purpose of the organisation is to provide children with clothing, housing, schooling, food, security and stability.

The philosophy? Most of the organisations supported through this fund do not receive government funding. Where possible, money is not given but rather donations in the form of food, clothing and other essential supplies.

UPGRADE OF LYNWOOD GATE The re-positioning and installation of the security gates to the garages & post boxes area just outside the Lynnwood gate are completed and operational. These gates will be monitored & managed by the security staff. Some images:

FIBRE TO THE HOME (FTTH) The Telkom-appointed contractor is still in process with the installation of the sleeves (green pipes) into the existing underground infrastructure on the estate. On 09/08/2016 at the official bi-weekly FTTH meeting with Telkom officials and their contractor, they reported 18 800 metres of the 22 000-metre underground installation has been completed. The installation of 9 700 metres overhead cabling commenced midJuly 2016 and is in process. (Overhead cabling is done in the same place where the current overhead cabling infrastructure exists.) Difficulty installing the sleeves due to blockages and/or damages in the existing underground infrastructure is still experienced, which is causing some delays. However, the contractor is still confident that the installation will be completed by August 2016 for testing & commissioning of the new FTTH network. As reported before, installation to the individual homes will commence thereafter as per application - to those who completed and submitted the necessary application form. Application forms are available on our website as well as at the HOA offices.

GOLF COURSE IRRIGATION SYSTEM (UPGRADE) The installation of the new, upgraded irrigation system on the golf course (back nine) is in process. Installation work is continued over more than 3 holes at the same time, as was originally estimated, as it has been less interruptive than was originally expected. The contractor remains confident that the project will be completed as scheduled. As reported before, the site handover was done in June 2016 and the duration of the project is estimated to take 3 months per phase. The work will be performed as per approved budget and in 2 phases: • Phase 1 will be the done on the “back nine” – holes 10 to18 during this financial year. • Phase 2 will be done on the “front nine” – holes 1 to 9 in the new financial year. Various identified areas will be used to stockpile materials in order to ensure effective handling of materials and to assist workers/machinery with easier access to the work areas. The existing pump house will also be upgraded re-using the existing compatible equipment. All the required civil work to the pump house will only be done closer to/or during Phase 2. Some images below tell the story so far:

BUILDING WORK & BUILDING PLANS We often need to address the matter regarding the need for building plans. Please be advised that, as per our Estate Rules and the National Building Regulations as well as the Municipality requirements & by-laws, a homeowner is responsible for having municipalapproved building plans for any structures erected on said property. The HOA also has an official arrangement with the Municipality that building plans submitted for approval must be HOA-approved in terms of the Estate Rules before approval is considered by the

Municipality. Kindly be aware that construction work may not commence before proper building plans have been approved. Make use of an architectural practitioner to do it for you. Do not build before approval is obtained. Ask if unsure before commencing any building work. In brief, building plans are required for swimming pools (focus on pool safety, discharge water and noise nuisance), for any alterations as well as for additions.

The father & son team from Silver Lakes in Pretoria had successfully summited after trekking the Lemosho route, which is both the longest and most scenic of the available routes up Kilimanjaro. Starting in the tropical rainforest at the Londorossi gate, this trail takes one through four different climates (Rain Forest, Moorland, Alpine Desert and eventually the Arctic conditions of the summit).

With the climb now behind us, it is heartening to see even more support and sponsorships emerge, and the focus shifting to a drive that will continue to raise awareness and funding towards this most critical of causes in preserving our fragile natural resources, and ensuring sustainability for the project going forward.

What had begun as a casual challenge thrown out by Quintin (20) in early 2016 had gradually become a “Climb for a Cause”, with the pair convincing several sponsors to throw their weight behind a charity drive to raise both funds and awareness for charities whilst “having fun” in the process! With the involvement of Tom & Carla, owners of Wutomi camp in the Klaserie, the charity drive quickly evolved into an event focused on the orphaned rhinos of Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre run by well-known wildlife figure Lente Roode. The centre cares for and fosters several rhino calves that have been left orphaned after poaching destroyed their families.

We wish to thank everyone involved, directly or indirectly, in making a difference in the world we live in, and look forward to taking on some future challenges in maintaining this excellent initiative. Ps: On Monday 18 July, 2 days after our successful summit, fellow South African Gugu Zulu passed away whilst making his summit attempt. A climber’s salute to you, Gugu, and may your soul rest in peace in the mists of The Mountain.

From the outset, the challenge had been based on an understanding of “no summit, no pay”, thus putting the pressure squarely on Eddie & Quintin to reach the peak! Several months of preparation and many hours of research paid off as the pair stood at the top of Africa at sunrise on that day. In the process, support and funding had been raised to foster 8 rhino calves and one orphaned cheetah cub. The generous sponsors of this event have reached deep into their pockets, with the estimated value of donations to date surpassing the R500,000 mark. In addition to the rhino sponsorships, Mercedes Wonderboom will be sponsoring a vehicle for “The Caring Daisies”, a charitable support group in Pretoria, and Capitec Bank have generously taken on the support, improvement and maintenance of the Lumukisa School in Hoedspruit – a pre-, primary and high school serving 900 plus learners from the immediate area. The sponsors who have supported this “Climb for a Cause”, in no particular order, are: Mercedes Wonderboom, Fontis

CORLIA MATHEWS ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR

ENVIRONMENTAL ARTICLE The winter months are traditionally the months in which we clean house – clean out those areas that have become overgrown in the summer months. We cut back the reeds and prune the trees. Elsewhere you will see that Elise, our horticulturist from The Garden Group, has written an article about pruning. You will also see we pruned the roses and Erigeron at the Club. These will be back in full bloom as soon as the warmer weather starts. The roses were also treated with a follow-up treatment of rose care to help keep them healthy and in full bloom in no time.

we have placed in the game reserve, and if possible, if you see litter laying around, to pick it up and take it away with your own refuse. Thanks a million to all who use our estate and its recreation facilities – be it play parks, the game reserve, tennis courts – and keep it neat and tidy. Our HOA staff together with our contractors try hard to keep the facilities a pleasure to use by our residents. Enjoy. At this time of the year all the lawns are only mowed every 2 or 3 weeks since the lawns grow more slowly in winter time. However, all the empty stands were cut by the end of June. Even though all the plants grow slowly or not at all, the weeds still love that we water them and all weeding continues during the winter season. You will see The Garden Group guys taking out weeds to keep our gardens tidy and clean, even now in the winter. Although the watering of our gardens still continues at night, if you see any watering during the day we would like to confirm to our residents that it is BOREHOLE water. When and if we have to use municipal water, it will always be early morning before 6 am.

In the game reserve we are especially careful with looking out for veldt fires and we have established a ‘veldt fire procedure’ for the game reserve. Homeowners are urged to keep the relevant numbers close at hand in case a fire breaks out. We have cut open the fire breaks to help prevent the spreading of fires in this windy and dry time of year. All over the estate you will also see some serious tree pruning in This year the veldt is in much better condition after the continued efforts of The Garden Group and our environmental staff together with Dr Douw Grobler, our game ranger, to seed, remove weeds and look after the veldt. They are working together with the Environmental Working Group to keep the game reserve in a pristine condition for ALL the homeowners to enjoy. The Garden Group guys who work in the game reserve also pick up litter every week. We would like to urge all homeowners who use the game reserve for cycling, walking or picnics to please make use of the dustbins

progress – not only on the golf course, but on the pavements as well. It is the right time of the year to prune trees, so if you have some trees in your garden that needs pruning, read Elise’s article and get your garden maintenance staff to prune your trees before summer starts and they start budding and growing! This time of the year you will also see that a big bulk of our work goes into picking up dead leaves and keeping the streets clean. The

You will also see the first of the corner feature walls and planters going up. The first ones we are building are those on the corner of Pebble Beach and Glen Eagles Drives at the fountain at Silver Lakes Drive entrance.

Together with this, you will see our new signage going up all over the estate. All the old, bleached indemnity signage will be replaced with brand-new signage in the Silver Lakes green with our emblem. You will also soon see signage on the golf course change and the dustbins will become part of a structure that will display the specific signage to each hole as well as house the dustbins, ball washers and divot mix. These were designed to match the Club House. As per all our design and development efforts on the estate, we are trying to have one theme and one main feature look and feel on the estate. Everything does not have to be the exact same design, but they should match. Some of our ‘smaller projects’ are, for example, finishing off on Club House projects such as tiling the fountain, and we can now at last put our plants back in the top part of the fountain. We will be doing this in the next month or so.

We are also inviting all homeowners to become part of our committees and working groups. The 2 standing committees are the Aesthetic and Architectural Committee, which scrutinises plans, and the Environmental Committee. The Environmental Committee handles all things environmental and social on the estate. Other committees are, for example, the Social Committee (events and functions) and the Environmental Working Group (game reserve). Both of these are more like working groups and chat about developments and what they would like the HOA to achieve for the homeowners in Silver Lakes. Please contact Kathy O’Connor at the HOA offices (012 809 0142) if you want to join any of these committees or working groups. She will be able to tell you the times and days we meet. As you will read elsewhere in Intra Muros, we also just started a new Bird Club and are looking for members for this committee as well.

The weed grasses (raccoon grass) in the dams on the 5th and in the game reserve will also be part of this authorised clearing of the waterways project. If you have any queries about this, please feel free to contact me.

To recap, the committees that we have are: • Aesthetic and Architectural Committee • Environmental Committee

Regarding the birds breeding in the reeds, we will be working together with homeowners and experts to see if we can find that ‘middle way’ where we cut back and remove reeds while making it less

• Social Committee

disruptive for the birds and fishes of our waterways.

• Environmental Working Group • Bird Club Committee

We will always endeavour to make our impact on the environment

The work on the waterways on the estate is under way and yes, we did start cutting back the reeds again – once again a bit late for the sake of breeding birds, but as you would have gathered from previous articles, we were halted in our winter work on the estate, especially on the waterways, through investigations requested by members. This has been sorted out and we may progress as we were planning to – with the blessing of all the authorities.

as little as possible. If we work with the environment, it is important that we take care of not only what we see around us, but also to remember that we have an impact on the greater area around us. We are just part of the environmental chain in the Pretoria East environment and should always keep cognisance of that fact. For example, water flows through the estate, so when it leaves the estate it must be clean and uncontaminated so that we are proud of the product that leaves Silver Lakes. It must be the same with the environment we present to the rest of the world. We must be not only proudly South African, but Proudly Silver Lakes. When we spoke about the work we do in Silver Lakes, one of our staff members coined a phrase: we ‘Silverlakefy’ everything. Everything must match and we must be proud of our products and our actions.

Article and photos by Gurumanzi In his State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Zuma took great pains to say that everything is all right in South Africa. A day later, a report by the SABC cited a lecturer at the University of Limpopo claiming that water in that province now poses health risks to unborn infants. A report in The Herald newspaper on the same day makes reference to an elderly man who contracted a lethal bacterial infection after swimming in the Kaaimans River near George. How do we reconcile these two versions of reality? The simple truth is that the South African water sector is entering a perfect storm. Such events are driven by the convergence of forces over which no individual has any direct control. We can isolate five distinct drivers but more are becoming relevant. These five drivers are: • •

We are transitioning to a fundamentally water-constrained national economy. The data management systems needed by government are in a deteriorating condition. Infrastructure collapse is becoming increasingly evident in our municipal sewage plants. Our potable water systems are unable to safely produce drinking water from sewage effluent. We currently have the largest el Nino event in recorded history.

Let me deal with each of these drivers separately. The most significant of these is the fact that South Africa will need about 62 billion cubic metres (BCM) of water a year by 2030 if we are to grow our economy, create full employment and retain social cohesion. This calculation is based on current technologies and efficiencies, so it does not factor in improvement to the way we currently operate. We only have 38 BCM at a high assurance of supply. This is the total volume of all the water in all our dams nationally. This does not factor in loss of live storage capacity through siltation. Our total national water resource expressed in terms of streamflow (water in rivers and thus economically useful) is 48 BCM. We are unable to build too many more new dams for various complex reasons, and the bit of water left in rivers is needed to retain ecological functionality before they become dysfunctional open sewers. Our future lies in either getting more water (growing the 38 BCM into 62 BCM by 2030) or by recycling our national resource through appropriate technology.

However, the way we manage our data input systems into the management process is appalling. A technical publication by Pittman in 2011 noted that we now have less rainfall gauging stations at national level when compared to 1920. This means that we are unable to measure the actual amount of rainfall occurring in different parts of our country. The same publication noted that we have about as many functional streamflow gauging stations today as existed in 1960. These stations measure the volume of water flowing in rivers across the entire country. In a recent Water Tribunal case in Durban, the dysfunction of both rainfall and streamflow gauging stations was relevant because the state did not know the extent of the drought in the Mvoti River until a local community ran out of drinking water, simply because their input data was incomplete. On the infrastructure side, the biggest collapse has been seen in municipal waste water treatment works (WWTWs). At national level we have 824 of these, collectively producing 5 128 Ml/day (mega litres or million litres) of effluent that is discharged back into our rivers and dams. Of this total, 836 Ml/day is treated to an acceptable standard. The remaining 4 292 Ml/day of untreated, or at best partially treated, sewage returns to our rivers and dams. This is 238 times bigger than the known point source pollution by gold- based Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), making municipalities the biggest single polluter of water in the country. At national level we have 1 085 bulk water treatment plants for potable water. These are at different levels of functionality, ranging from good (Rand Water, Umgeni Water, etc.) to dysfunctional. Of this total, 250 are known to be in total disrepair, mostly in the rural areas of Limpopo, the Free State, KZN, North West and Mpumalanga. The most important aspect for the reader to understand is that none of these plants were ever designed to treat water to safe drinking standards from sewage effluent or sewage contaminated feedstock. On the el Nino front, data generated by

credible researchers shows that there is a near linear rise in both the high and low values of surface seawater temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. This means that both el Nino (surface level rise above the average) and la Nina (surface level lows below the average) events are increasing as global warming manifests. South Africa is currently in the grips of a major el Nino event that has left large portions of the country in the grips of a severe drought. Ironically the same provinces that have the highest level of municipal WWTW dysfunction are also the same provinces where human suffering is the most extreme (Limpopo, the Free State, KZN, North West and Mpumalanga). So what happens when we have massive flows of untreated sewage into rivers and dams that are distressed by extreme drought? We create a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and virus populations. More importantly, we actively feed these populations with elevated levels of nutrients, and we expose them to partially metabolized medications like antibiotics, anti-retrovirals and oestrogen. The result is the potential for the mutation of pathogens to new virulent forms that might be drug resistant. This is the perfect storm we are now facing. The Minister of Water and Sanitation understands this and is doing what she can to bring control to municipal WWTWs, but she is constitutionally constrained. The national Department of Water and Sanitation has no legal right to take over municipal level infrastructure. This leaves solutions to the individual and organized groups like body corporates, homeowner associations and tenant associations. End of pipe solutions are available, ranging from excellent to dodgy. To be effective, the consumer needs to look for a solution that contains activated carbon to remove all toxins. For bacterial and viral reduction (sterilization), either UV light systems or microfiltration systems, capable of capturing particles down to the near nanosize, are the best. We are facing a perfect storm and even if the Minister could turn this ship around quickly, we are realistically looking at a decade. This is why the savvy consumer needs to become aware of these growing risks so they can protect themselves. Dr Anthony Turton is a professor at the Centre for Environmental Management at the University of the Free State and the UNESCO Chair in Groundwater Management at the University of the Western Cape.

THE COOK ON THE CORNER PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP This year we’ve managed to survive an incredibly cold winter. Even now, as we move into September, the cold air is still lapping at spring’s beach. It’s not long before the Christmas decorations go up in the supermarkets (yes, I know! It’s always way too early), and with it, springtime brings a gauntlet of magazine and blog articles about getting you ready for the summer beaches with your ‘bikini body’. I am a firm believer in eating yourself healthy by feeding your body appropriately. Eat well and eat fresh and I believe that you’ll keep the kilos off, even in winter. My favourite dish to make in winter is any version of a soup! Soups are incredibly healthy because all of the vitamins and minerals are contained within the soup as opposed to washing them away in the water should you boil broccoli as a side dish, for example. Many food historians trace soups back to the beginning of cooking history. In fact, restaurants are thus called because the first restaurant served soup, which directly translates to ‘food that restores’. Even before food science and lab tests, people were aware that soup made them feel healthy and good. Soups are made by combining various ingredients in large pots to create nutritious, filling and easily digested meals that are super easy to make. Soups are consumed throughout cultures across the world in vastly different forms. Think of the Polish borscht (beetroot broth), Spanish Gazpacho, Chinese won ton, French brown onion or the Italian minestrone. These dishes are iconic within those cultures and are all based on the same principles.

Seline van der Wat

Within the chef industry, great soups and sauces are seen as the earmark of a great chef. If you can’t make a good soup, you probably won’t advance very far. That is quite telling about the culture of soup eating that we’ve managed to develop in the world. Personally, I love soups because they are a vehicle for transforming a bunch of boring or strange ingredients into a bowl of warm, comforting goodness. Soups can be made to accommodate any allergies or any dietary requirements. The recipe below is low-fat, gluten-free (if served

without bread) and can easily be made dair y-free by swapping the butter for a tablespoon of olive oil and by omitting the garlic cream. Feel free to play around with the ingredients below – add some texture with croutons or add some shredded chicken in at the end.

Kickstarter Ginger, Carrot and Butternut soup Super healthy, with a kick of ginger. Serve warm with a few slices of your favourite bread. INGREDIENTS: For the soup: • 50g butter + 100g butter • 5ml crushed garlic • 1 white onion • 1 l vegetable stock • 3cm ginger root • 8 carrots • 1 butternut • 1 tin coconut milk • 1 naartjie • Salt and pepper to taste Our cookbook, TWO By Seline and Leandri, was recently awarded an international Gourmand Award! For the foam: • 250ml cream • 3ml creamed garlic • 1 packet pea shoots 1.Finely chop the onion and sauté on a low heat for 20 minutes with the garlic and 50g butter. This step is super important because you want to cook the onions all the way through until they become sweet – you don’t want to brown them! 2.Once the onions are soft and sweet, grate the ginger finely and add to the pot. 3.Grate the carrots and the butternut and add to the pot too. Allow to sweat for 10 minutes. 4.Now pour in the vegetable stock and allow the soup to simmer gently until all the vegetables are cooked through – this will only take about 15 minutes because the vegetables have all been grated. 5.Add the coconut milk and naartjie zest, then squeeze out all of the juice into the soup too. Make sure you don’t remove the white part of the naartjie skin while zesting the naartjie – this will make your soup bitter. 6.Remove the soup from the pot, toss into a blender and blitz on a high speed for about 1 minute – you will see the soup change colour. 7.Add the remaining butter into the blender and blend further. 8.Add a large helping of black pepper and some salt to taste. Blend and prepare to serve. 9.To make the garlic foam, whip the cream to soft peaks or until just foamy. Add the garlic and a pinch of salt and pepper. Swirl onto the steaming soup and top with the pea shoots.

PSYCHOMETRIC ASSESSMENT DR. ILSE RUANE PSYCHOLOGY

Psychometric assessment is used to assess a person’s ability, personality and behaviour to be able to arrive at a diagnosis and guide a treatment plan. There are four reasons psychometric assessment, or more generally called psychological testing, is performed. First, courts request it for a variety of reasons, e.g. forensic work and custody battles. Second, it is used in cognitive rehabilitation, e.g. head injury and stroke victims. Third, if parents or schools suspect learning or emotional problems. Lastly, to assist in guidance of socially related challenges such as marital problems or family discord as well as in the assessment of major psychological disorders. In this article I will focus on the scholastic aspect of assessment as this is where assessment is most commonly used. Psychometric assessment can be divided into two main areas of inquiry: cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and personality functioning. The first – intellectual or cognitive strengths and weaknesses – is where your child is evaluated for possible learning disabilities, attention problems or other obstacles to academic and social success. The second – a personality assessment – is part of any psychological evaluation. If academic and intellectual factors do not seem to be the problem, an evaluation into other areas of functioning, such as personality and overall psychology wellness and functioning, is in order. Personality assessment can be a very useful way of looking at a problem from a different perspective. It can give you a lot of new insight into your child, into your behaviour and into the family that you can hopefully use to break problematic cycles. If you are considering an assessment, whether for scholastic issues or personal challenges, keep two things in mind. • The resistance to testing results is often similar to that experienced in psychotherapy. You may experience resentment at the findings, anger at implications of inadequate parenting, and au-

tomatic reactions to terms like learning disability, attention deficit and low self-esteem. Listen with an open mind to the test results before you reject them, and ask many questions about what you have understood. • Psychometric assessments are imperfect. Any psychological test is a sample of behaviour at a given point in time. This is one reason test batteries – the use of multiple assessment questionnaires/instruments – are expensive. Psychologists make use of multiple tools to find correlation and consistency in findings across the instruments before forming a conclusion. For example, before stating a person is an introvert, two or more instruments need to have introvertion as a finding. A single test in isolation is of limited value. There are several private practitioners such as educational and counselling psychologists that offer scholastic psychometric services and these can be found on the web or via word of mouth. Schools may also provide this service, but there may be questions around the quality of assessments done on large numbers of children simultaneously as the focus cannot be at an individual child level. The process may also be riddled with internal politics and hidden agendas. However, being assessed within the school system is proven to be much more cost-effective as the cost of having the psychologist present is divided amongst the number of children being assessed at a given time. Furthermore, if you are fortunate enough to work with a functioning team in your school system, then you are getting the attention of many experts, all determined to understand your child. For therapeutic evaluations such as personality challenges between family members, partners or spouses, many psychologists offer a range of assessments aimed at assisting and developing more functional relationship skills. Furthermore, within therapeutic evalua-

tions, several instruments exist which assess mental status and can be useful in diagnosis of more serious psychological disorders, treatment plans and prognosis for the future. These types of assessments are more readily available across the registrations of counselling and clinical psychologists whereas educational psychologists primarily focus within the scholastic context. Within our overlapping professions within the education context, people do not always agree about the definition of terms such as learning disability or attention deficit. Across professions, for example when you sit at a meeting of the education team at your child’s school with psychologists, social workers, teachers and other education specialists, there can be differences in opinion regarding these heavily-laden terms. My advice is to avoid focusing on these labels as they are often not useful in problem resolution. Instead, try to keep the focus on the following: 1. What are the child’s strengths and weaknesses as uncovered in the testing? 2. How do they affect her/his personality, selfesteem and ability to function socially and academically? 3. What kind of remediation have been shown to help (such as smaller classes, special teaching styles, psychotherapy, relaxation)? 4. How can the child work around her/his problems? 5. Do you understand the test results and have you learned from them? It is important to remember a test battery is only as good as the psychologist who interprets it and determines plausible findings from it. It is of vital importance to view a test battery as an opportunity to gather more information to further unpack a problem situation so as to reach a more informed plan of action.

Pruning by: Elize Malan

Although the pruning of rose bushes are discussed in all gardening magazines during winter, little information is supplied on pruning other plants.

WHY PRUNE Shaping your plant is essential, especially with newly planted trees. The central leader of a tree should not be pruned, but the height of the lowest branch is important. To maintain healthy growth, all dead or dying material have to be removed regularly. To improve quality of flowers, fruit and foliage, pruning is done on roses and fruit trees. Restricting growth is needed to maintain your garden design. Trees in general need regular maintenance to be kept within bounds.

HOW OFTEN This can be monthly to remove dead flower heads from plants eg. Felicia, Tulbachia, or Hemerocallis lilies. Hedges can also be trimmed monthly. Do it once a season to tidy up grasses, shrubs and trees. Fruit trees, roses and grape vines are usually pruned once per year.

TOOLS Sharp secateurs, a long-handled lopper, strong leather gloves and a saw are necessary to get the job done. When trimming big trees, a suitable ladder and mechanical saw need to be added to the list. A plant chipper machine for shredding the material would be helpful and will supply the garden with mulch and compost. Due to the fact that few people still have fruit trees in their gardens, I do not see the need to discuss their pruning.

PRUNING OF HYDRANGEAS (CHRISTMAS ROSES) These deciduous plants are pruned in winter, when the different types of bare branches are easy to recognize. Hydrangea plants have wood that differ according to age. The young, slender shoots are light brown, will have a bud on the top tip and can be left. The

darker coloured shoots are two seasons’ growth. They have a cluster of buds, usually four to six. Cut these back to just above the cluster. They will produce flowers during summer. The thick, heavy stems carrying dead flowers can be pruned back hard to the base of the plant to stimulate new growth. By dead-heading during summer, a second flush of flowers can be achieved before winter.

PRUNING OF ROSES Due to watering and fertilising, come July the roses are sometimes still in full bloom. To achieve a rest period (roses are deciduous), cut back on watering for two weeks and the lower leaves on the plants will turn yellow and start dropping. Pruning can still be done during August, but this will delay the first spring flowers. If roses are not pruned regularly, the bushes will outgrow the space available, become very tall and eventually the flowers will become smaller. To assist in having the rosebushes all pruned to the same height, use a measuring stick with Hybrid Tea and tall Floribunda roses. • Cut off all branches to the same height. • Select strong, healthy stems (up to five) and remove the remaining branches at the base of the plant. • Finish off by trimming the remaining branches just above the top eye on each branch. • Side shoots are usually removed, but some can be left. In countries like Germany, roses in nurseries and on estates are pruned mechanically. Hand-pruning is no longer done and these rose bushes perform beautifully.

Garden know how: Prune back deciduous plants and transplant these in June for good results.

Silver Lakes Bird Club We are very excited to report that the Silver Lakes Bird Club is now in its second month. We have had our second Bird Talk in the series for this newly-formed ‘Silver Lakes Bird Club’. As you will gather, we are still very much in the beginning stages – we do not even have a constitution or anything as formal as that yet. But we are working towards that as you will see below. In the first talk, Faansie Peacock gave a very informative talk about birds in general and about mynas specifically since they were the topic of his studies. Faansie can only be described as the ultimate birder and an encyclopaedia of knowledge about birds. If you want to find out more about Faansie’s career and the books he wrote, please Google him and have a look to what he has offered for our first talk. Although Faansie was a hard act to follow, Ernst Retief of BirdLife South Africa visited us for our second talk.

the beginning phases of the club, everybody is very excited about it and are freely sharing all the information we need to start our club. Here are some websites and events you can Google so long. If you want to join individually and have the benefits of single membership such as their magnificent brochure, please link onto the web link below. BidLife SA have made provision on their website where people can join online at http://www.birdlife.org.za/get-involved/join-birdlifesouth-africa and pay via their secure online payment facility. They also have a great event coming up in September – the African Bird Fair, which is being held on 3 & 4 September at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. More information is available on their website, http://www.birdlife.org.za/events/bird-fair.

Ernst’s main interest and field of study is the secretary bird and he had us all spellbound with his fantastic talk about these birds. We will all now be looking for secretary birds when we go into the wild in future. Ernst is not only studying them, but also mapping the population.

If you would like to join the Club, please feel free to contact me, Corlia Mathews, at mathews@iafrica.com or on 083 448 9441. We will have our next talk in September and all are welcome. We start at 6 pm, have a meal and while everybody is enjoying the light supper prepared by the Club we listen to the fascination stories of experts. Join us – not only for the talks, but we will also be working with BirdLife SA to go on excursions and take part in their yearly events such as the ‘see as many birds as you can’ day in November. We would like to invite everybody and anybody who would like to help with organising these talks and events to contact me so that we can start a committee who can help handle the talks, events and affairs of our club. Please contact me, Corlia Mathews, at the details mentioned above for Bird Club Committee volunteers. We are in the process of entering everybody who has so far attended the talks into a club membership with BirdLife SA and will liaise with the Northern Gauteng Club to link into their activities and events as well as share ours with them. Even though we are just at

“The African Bird Fair will be taking place at the beautiful Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden over the weekend of 3 and 4 September. There will be an exciting variety of exhibitors who will be showcasing all things birding such as binoculars & spotting scopes, bird books, birding apps, bird feeders, wildlife art, birding holiday destinations and tour operators. Throughout the weekend there will be lots of things happening including guided bird walks, guided botanical walks, photography workshops (by booking only), fascinating presentations and lots of fun activities for the kids. Opening times are 08h00 - 17h00 on the Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact Emma Askes on emma.askes@birdlife.org.za”. We are looking forward to seeing you all at our next talk in September. Keep a lookout for our advertisements and join us for a fun evening – and yes, it is for ALL. Not only serious birders attend. We have people who come to join who have never done any birding event, never gone on a bird watching trip and know nothing about birds. We are all interested in nature and enjoy learning more. Join us and enjoy what Silver Lakes offers so freely – nature without bounds. Corlia Mathews

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: STEPS:

• Paper (in your preferred colours) • Scissors • Glue • Candle

STEP ONE Take any round object in the house like a small plate and draw a circle on paper. Cut out the circle. The idea is to have 4 round paper shapes in a variety of sizes. STEP TWO Fold the circle in half to create a horizontal line. Then fold that half vertically again. Repeat folding the halves another two times to create 7 fold lines. STEP THREE Draw a half of a leaf shape in the design that you would like to use as a template. On every second line place this template and trace it with a pencil. Fold each leaf in half and cut out on the lines that you traced. For the smaller circles I only traced the leaves’ outlines. STEP FOUR Repeat this process with each circle and your choice of design. STEP FIVE Place each layer on top of the others, arranging from the big flower on the bottom to the small flowers at the top. STEP SIX Fold the top two layers’ leaves to create a three-dimensional effect. Lastly, put your candle in the middle and VIOLA!!
