It’s hard to believe, but 2016 is all but over. In a few weeks, the Estate will empty out, the builders will take a break and Silver Lakes almost becomes a holiday resort in its own right. If you have not made plans for December, why not take a holiday in Silver Lakes? You can go on a game drive, take a hike through the reserve, go mountain biking in the Estate or on the multitude of cycle tracks around us, or sharpen up on your golf! Over the past two years in the December Intra Muros, I have written about water supply uncertainties that are facing us, and this year the situation has deteriorated even further with the Vaal Dam at its lowest levels in a generation, water restrictions being put in force and some suburbs in Pretoria having gone without water for a few days already. The HOA is working on contingency plans to at least have water available at certain points in the Estate where our boreholes are situated, but we cannot ensure an uninterrupted supply of piped water in the Estate. The onus is therefore on residents to make plans to minimise the effect of water disruptions, which unfortunately seem to be unavoidable. Water usage with the drought conditions we are currently facing are a major cause for concern and we will continue to urge all residents to comply with the municipal directives and restrictions that are communicated from time to time. The golf course obviously consumes large volumes of water, but I

would like to assure residents that we are managing and monitoring this usage closely and working responsibly with the boreholes and dams that supply the golf course with its water. We are proud of our Golf Environment Organization accreditation for sustainable golf course management, not because we are the first golf course in Africa to achieve this, but to remind ourselves that we need to be sensible with our water usage to maintain this accreditation. Ironically, we had some of the worst flooding in the Estate’s history on the 7th of November 2016, with Silver Lakes Drive flooded, a portion of our perimeter wall collapsing and the golf course essentially under water for a few hours. Thanks to quick reaction from our Security and Operations staff, the clean-up and repair took place swiftly, but the destructive effect of the floodwaters was frightening. I won’t forget Norman Riley’s comment as the driving range started disappearing under a brown mass of water, saying “The new irrigation system is working better than we thought!” On behalf of the Association, I lastly want to wish all our members, residents and staff a relaxing and enjoyable festive season. Safe travelling and we look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year. Regards Jan
