One of the highlights in our golfing calendar is the Club Championships that will be hosted during April and I would like to wish all members participating in this event the best of luck, straight drives and short putts over the two days of competition. With the Clubhouse construction finally out of the way and the opening of the convenience store and upgraded upstairs bar areas imminent, we will be officially opening the facility to our members, golfers and corporate clients during the month. Details will be communicated in due course. The Lynnwood Road Gate construction should also be over soon, along with the inconvenience this has caused to all our residents, neighbouring estates and surrounding schools. The end result will certainly be worth the disruption, which was planned to fall mostly over the school holidays. This project is also the last of our 2015/2016 Capital Development Levy Projects and we are looking forward to less disruption around the Clubhouse and Estate during the new financial year as the focus is mostly going to be on the

Golf Course Irrigation and Cart Path Project for 2016/2017. It is also pleasing to note that all resolutions were passed at the recent AGM. This will enable the HOA to continue investing in much needed capital projects, but with a negligible increase in levies. Going forward we will continue to convene the AGM early on in the calendar year as this enables the HOA to budget more accurately for the ensuing financial year, close to which the AGM is held. I would lastly again encourage residents to communicate with me should there be any issues you would like to bring to our attention. History of

La Quinta Golf Course, Spain Thomas Pascual, founder of Prestigious Pascual, started construction on the piece of land on which the La Quinta Golf Course was later built in 1980. La Quinta was initially a series of real estate. In 1992 it was directly managing the properties on the land. As the years passed it continued to grow in such a way that there is now not only a golf course but also residential areas and hotels. The whole of La Quinta now consists of 160 hectares of complex as well as more than 1000 homes. La Quinta is situated in a very beautiful and unique setting: it has the quiet, relaxing atmosphere of the countryside, but it is also situated only 15 minutes away from the busy social life of Marbella. La Quinta is not only a golf course, but also a home for some and a holiday home for others.

of the coastline and the Marbella mountain range. Some of the most important PGA competitions have been hosted by La Quinta Golf Course. This unique golf course offers a variety of attractions – a five star hotel, the golf and spa resort, a kids club, three restaurants, a gymnasium, tennis courts, a golf academy, and driving ranges. La Quinta is committed to making sure their customers are satisfied with the experience they get when visiting. They always ensure that the course and all the land are well looked-after and maintained in order to make the experience a beautiful and enjoyable one. The golf course consists of 27 holes split into 3 nine-hole courses. The natural beauty of the landscape offers a wide choice of games to the golfer. The hotel has up to 170 bedrooms, a spa and event rooms. As a traveling golfer, this golf course is really a must-see.

KATHY O’CONNOR LIAISON MANAGER

Dear All

What do you think are the Top 10 complaints reported to the HOA? Generally speaking, the complaints fall into one of the following categories:

Should you have any suggestions, complaints or problems you need to share with the HOA, please send an email to suggestions@silverlakes.co.za and the matter will be addressed. Thank you for helping to make Silver Lakes into a wonderful and happy estate.

• Infrastructure • Pets • Behaviour

Regards Kathy O’Connor

Regarding infrastructure, we receive regular complaints about street lights that are not working. From the HOA side we report faulty street lights to Tshwane every week. We have had meetings with the various Tshwane managers to try to see what else we can do to have the lights repaired quicker. This is a work in progress.

ANNUAL EVENTS CALENDAR 2016 Tuesday, 19 April: Summer Night Run Saturday, 23 April: Pet Micro-chipping

Residents can also report faulty lights directly to streetlights@ tshwane.gov.za by providing a physical address, the street corner nearest to the faulty light, the street light pole number, the nature of the problem and your contact details.

Sunday, 8 May: Mother’s Day Lunch Saturday, 4 June: Race of Faith Run

In terms of pets, all kinds of issues arise – from dogs creating a nuisance to feral cats to owners not removing pet excrement from public areas. At the end of the day, it all comes down to considering others and being a responsible pet owner. The HOA will again be hosting a Pet Microchipping Day at the Club to help to ensure that as many pets as possible are microchipped. The date for this day is Saturday, 23 April 2016.

Thursday, 16 June: Youth Day Fun Day Sunday, 19 June: Father’s Day Lunch Tuesday, 16 August: Winter Night Run Date TBA: Women’s Day

With regard to behaviour, so many issues fall under this category. Problem areas include speeding in the Estate, not stopping at stop streets, and youngsters damaging private and communal property. What this comes down to is self-discipline and setting an example for the next generation as security personnel cannot be everywhere all the time. Surveillance cameras cannot be placed at every stop sign and problem area in the Estate. It is up to you as an individual to police yourself and to think about what type of estate you and your family want to live in. One of the privileges of living in Silver Lakes is having the freedom to move around without feeling threatened. We need to protect this privilege.

Saturday, 10 September: Spring Day Fun Day Date TBA: Charity Golf Day Monday, 31 October: Halloween/Trick or Treat Friday, 18 November: Garden Competition Friday, 25 November: Christmas Celebration Tuesday, 6 December: Summer Night Run

NEW ROOF & EMERGENCY ACCESS AT LYNWOOD GATE The construction work at the Lynwood Gate is in process and the gate will be closed at times – major construction will be done over the school holiday period. The new emergency access road & gate has been completed and is now operational. Excavations and the casting of concrete column bases for the new roof structure have been completed. Steel beams & columns for the new roof structure have been delivered on site. Final preparation (sizing & cutting) of the steel structure is in process for positioning and erection during the school holiday period.

A large construction crane will also be used on site by the contractor to erect the steel structure. The security access control (ingress and egress lanes) will again become necessary at times and will be done in conjunction with our security department who will manage the process. We again apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Please note this is a construction site and that it is dangerous.

Silver Lakes Golf Course When I look at the pictures of the La Quinta Golf Course and the Silver Lakes Golf Course, I can only say that I love this month’s theme being Spain. It is not difficult to imagine being in Spain when you are enjoying the gorgeous new Café 41 and Gaudi-like structure of the wall at the Kids Play Area.

This is an interesting time of year; you can almost feel autumn, but you can’t believe how hot the last of the summer days still are. First of all, I would like to thank Corlia for putting so much love and attention into our gorgeous estate. I am excited and a little overwhelmed at taking charge of this formidable portfolio.

I am currently in the process of meeting all the service providers and getting up to speed with all ongoing projects, so I hope to be on top of everything shortly. We are committed to saving water and although we do make use of boreholes for our golf course and gardens, we are very aware that it is a valuable resource. If you notice any problems regarding our irrigation in the environmental areas, we would appreciate it if you could report it to the HOA.

Something worth knowing: Pruning the Gaura: After flowering, the plant should be cut back to half its size; this removes excess growth while triggering fresh new growth. If you do not prune the Gaura after flowering, the plant becomes woody, one-stemmed and top-heavy.

I have noticed that the Gaura lindheimeri, better known as the ‘butterfly bush’, along Pebble Beach Drive seems dry and damaged. These plants are being attacked by ‘flea beetles’. We are making use of Ripcord to get rid of these little pests and will be monitoring the plants closely.

We will soon start with the construction of the flowerboxes on the street corners and upgrades at the HOA offices and entrances. At the moment there are a few bare flowerbeds. We will make use of existing plants such as Tulbachia, or ‘wild garlic’, to fill these beds until the upgrades have been completed and new planting can be done.

Agronomy Newsletter by Andrew Mc Kenna

Dear Silver Lakes Member To keep you all informed as to what we are busy with and what we are planning for the course, we have started this newsletter. It will hopefully be informative, enlightening and a little funny sometimes.

postpone the Hollowtyne for a week, which was without a doubt the best decision. That was the Thursday when it reached 43 degrees Celsius.

The newsletter, going forward, should be shorter with more pictures… The first one is always the longest, containing so much information to bring everyone up to speed!

With the onset of rains finally in January, we had a very busy two months with the following taking place: • Hollowtyning and overseeding of all the greens. • Fertilizing of all tees, surrounds, fairways and semi rough. Some areas received 2 x applications. • The new tees at No 6 were completed. • Bunkers were decompacted. • All of the biddum was removed from No 3. • The bunker project on the two bunkers at No 5 was started.

The summer of 2015/2016 will be remembered for a long time by all greenkeepers, being one of the hottest and driest on record. In fact, at one stage we stopped watering fairways and tees in order to preserve our supply as at that stage there was just no rain in sight and one of the boreholes had actually run dry. We also decided to

INTRA MUROS APRIL I 2016 (20) DESIGNED BY

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

In order to try and find a solution for the biddum lining of bunkers (as geotextiles have not been used in decades overseas), we requested permission to experiment on two bunkers at our cost. (The club did provide some labour.) • All sand was removed. • Drainage was checked. • The lips were reshaped and brought down; they had to be reinforced with chipboard due to the awkward original construction. • The bases were painted with a double application of an environmentally-friendly product that has been developed to seal tar roads. • Sand was put back and distributed. While there were some challenges, we are confident that this could prove to be a solution for the bunkers going forward. While some of the product did crack, the supplier indicated he would redo the bunkers if it proved to be a problem. Notice how incredibly deep the lips were dug out originally in the bunkers at No 5. The above picture (p.22) shows the correct construction of a bunker and proper “Herringbone” drainage. We have had excellent germination after the overseed and the process was a great success. Since then the greens have continued to improve all the time and our main aim at the moment is to get them up to speed and fully recovered. The root growth is phenomenal, giving us a great base to work with going into winter. On to the contentious subject of the irrigation system! It might be useful for me to explain just what it takes for the staff to try and water the course. Bear in mind that each and every sprinkler has to be turned on manually with a pair of long nose pliers. It takes the guys until about 11 in the morning to finish the greens – we try our best not to disrupt any golf so the guys are asked to switch off the water should any golfers approach. This leaves them enough time to get 1-2 fairways done for the rest of the day. This is, however, only about 15-20 minutes per sprinkler, which equates to about 5mm of water. By simple calculations, this means all our fairways only get watered about every 10 days. Please note I have averaged this out as we try and water the weaker patches more in order to try and get them knitted.

evaporation which hits approximately 9mm a day when it gets close to 40 degrees Celsius, which seems to be a common temperature these days! In the last couple of months we have also purchased a couple of pieces of new equipment: some new greens mowers, a utility vehicle and a new fairway mower. The Toro 5510 is a beautiful piece of equipment and rightly so, considering you don’t get much change from a million rand! For February we are planning to Aerovate the bare patches in the fairways and semi rough that are still battling. They will also be topdressed and fertilized again. We are working hard to get them fully knitted before the winter. As soon as we have cooler weather the course staff will commence with the tricky project of removing the Cynodon from the greens. This is something that has been put off for a while, but the time has come for it to be tackled. This, however, will not happen without some pain. Each patch of Cynodon will be sterilized with three applications of Roundup to ensure that the entire plant is dead. (This is not something we want to repeat next year!) The Roundup will be applied using a sponge roller specifically made for this type of application and will be performed only by Johan or his very able assistant, James. After the third application, the dead area will be sodded out with Bent. Please do not panic at the ‘dead’ patches on the greens, and please communicate with other golfers as to what is happening. The utmost care will be taken during this process and we do not foresee any problems. In the past we have attempted manual removal, but this hasn’t proved to be successful. Finally, you would’ve also noted that the staff uniforms have changed with the guys wearing Chinos and blue shirts. The new look is going hand in hand with an initiative of ours called Good 2 Great. More about this in the coming months. The team would like to wish everyone happy golfing.

Tees are done (also manually) at night with the staff going out in two shifts to do all tees in a 5-day period. Another important consideration is that kikuyu needs between 25-30mm of water per week to thrive and to look its best. If there is no rain, our course only gets a fifth of the water it should in a 10-day period. Dying grass is the result. Oh yes, and this is excluding the trans-

The Zimbabwean Artist and the Afrikaner by Koos Marais

It all started by chance when Bennie Viljoen, South African businessman and nature lover, saw the work of Ndlovu exhibited in a typical German tourist shop in a Windhoek shopping mall. Bennie and his wife had been attending an international athletics meeting in which their daughter had been performing. Bennie was mesmerized by this unknown Zimbabwean’s artistry, but he was somewhat taken aback by the German shopkeeper’s price tags. Never before had he seen such perfect and intricate detail of African wildlife recreated in natural African wood. It was as if the animals had been photographed three-dimensionally using the most exquisite solid wood from Africa’s age-old trees as the medium. Bennie left to attend the athletics meeting and tried to push the beauty of the sculptures from his mind, but as he watched the athletes the images returned to his mind.

He and his wife sped away in their little rental car and arrived in Okahandja. The place was swarming with people and they were feeling a little forlorn. They made their way to the bus depot where Bennie started making enquiries again. He had to endure a few incredulous and one or two hostile looks, but he persisted. Suddenly a taxi drew up, and as the occupants exited Bennie said, “I am looking for a man from Zimbabwe who made some beautiful wood carvings of animals and sold all of them yesterday in Windhoek.”

The next morning, after a relatively sleepless night, he returned to the German shop for another look. He had decided to bite the bullet and empty the piggy bank on one of the amazing pieces. Throughout the night his focus had kept returning to the lifelike images of wildlife, so masterfully re-created by the unknown artist, to the point where he knew he just had to own one of them. To his utter amazement and shock, the shelf previously occupied by the objects of his dreams was empty! He almost exclaimed and enquired from the German lady who simply told him that it all had been sold, in one day! Bennie found it hard to believe. After all, the twenty-odd pieces carried hefty price tags. But there was nothing he could do. The sculptures had been sold; they were gone. He felt deflated but enquired about the artist. “Oh, he is some or other Zimbabwean, you know,” the German lady told him nonchalantly. “Where can I find him?” Bennie asked tiredly. “There is a park a few blocks down the road where the Zimbabweans sleep,” the lady answered disinterestedly. Bennie immediately got a second wind and made his way to the park where he scouted around, somewhat daunted by the task he had taken on. He had learnt the artist’s name and started asking around. Suddenly a man said, “Oh yes, Ndlovu, the artist. He left for Okahandja this morning.” Bennie sighed. Okahandja is a small town 70 kilometers north of Windhoek. He made a few calculations and realised that if he left immediately he might just return in time for his flight back to South Africa later that afternoon.

“It is I. I am Ndlovu,” a young man said. Bennie’s mouth dropped open. He could not believe that he had found the man and he just stared at him. They shook hands and looked at each other, each with his own thoughts about the other. One came from a big city and a background of wide experiences and education, the other a poor man from a destitute African town, desperate for money.

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

“I was told that all your work had been sold yesterday, Ndlovu,” Bennie said. “Yes, it is true,” Ndlovu answered, not quite as happy as he should have been. “Do you have any idea who bought it, Ndlovu?” Bennie ventured. “It was my sister. She bought them all,” a strange voice suddenly interrupted, and for the second time in as many minutes Bennie could not believe what he had just heard. “Your sister? Where is she?” he asked the new face urgently. “Oh, she lives about thirty kilometers from here in a small place.” Bennie glanced at his watch, furiously making some calculations around his estimated time of departure from the Hosea Kutako International Airport. “Take me to her, please. Now,” he said. Ndlovu and the stranger joined the white couple in their small car and they sped off into the bush. During the short journey Bennie and his wife questioned their own sanity, but the passion for the African art drove them on. Bennie tells how he could see the pieces all neatly displayed on the low verandah wall when they were still far away. It appeared almost incongruous as the masterfully crafted sculptures sat on the simple little faded green verandah wall with a few chickens and a mangy dog lazing around. For a few minutes Bennie just admired the art and he knew that he had discovered something special. He then negotiated what he considered a fair price with the new owner and the fat lady happily handed over the objects. Bennie got the pieces at a fraction of what the German lady had asked, but he also knew that the African lady had done extremely well. The only loser had been Ndlovu, the skillful artist. Bennie could sense that the man (and not the German shop owner) had probably sold his work to the African lady for a pittance just so that he could have enough money to get home to Buluwayo in Zimbabwe, where his family and ninety percent of the country were starving. Bennie felt immensely sad and sorry for the man and handed him some cash. They exchanged contact numbers and Bennie and his wife returned to Windhoek, with his wife tasked with packing the precious pieces in crumpled newspaper rolls. Back in Pretoria, Bennie’s home town, he proudly displayed his newly acquired art pieces. One by one friends and acquaintances came to admire and drool over the sculptures and one by one the items were scrounged, borrowed and bought from Bennie’s collection. Bennie did not need the money, but he wanted to help Ndlovu and he hoped by distributing the pieces to a wider audience, a demand would be created.

So it transpired that one day Bennie phoned Ndlovu again. “I want to buy some more sculptures, please,” he told the elated Zimbabwean. Buluwayo is situated some seven hundred kilometers and a typical African border post away from Pretoria. They arranged to meet each other halfway at the Beit Bridge border post. On the designated day Bennie drove up to Beit Bridge while Ndlovu made his way down by bus. Bennie cleared customs, but to avoid the bureaucracy (of “exporting” his car) he simply walked across the bridge to meet Ndlovu. To his amazement, the artist was accompanied by his six children and wife, all neatly turned out for the occasion. Bennie gave Ndlovu all the gifts he had brought as well as the agreed money, and once again Bennie returned home laden with the most beautiful examples of African art he had ever seen. Twice more during the following year they met in the same manner, becoming friends in the process. Then Bennie decided that he had to see Ndlovu in action in his studio. He took a few days off his busy schedule and drove up to Buluwayo. He would be met by Ndlovu at the first traffic light as he entered the town. After driving the eight hours and making the painful clearance through customs and immigration Bennie drew up in Buluwayo where his friend was waiting, in collar and tie. They drove to Ndlovu’s humble abode consisting of nothing but a tin shanty. The house was neat and clean but had no electricity. Ndlovu then took Bennie to his “studio” which did have electricity, a cable from the neighbour’s house supporting two points, one for a naked light bulb and one for a power tool. Ndlovu worked with the crudest of tools. He had one large grinder with which he made the rough outline of the carvings. His hand tools he had fashioned himself from flat iron. He told Bennie that he often became so physically exhausted from handling the large grinder that his arms a

continued working in Buluwayo, travelling to Pretoria from Musina by train, bringing his sculptures with him. Bennie continued developing markets and spreading the good news. Then one day Ndlovu came with his wife and son. Bennie gave them accommodation and bought him some power tools and lighter hand tools, enabling the artist to work faster and to create even more detail in his work. Most importantly, he was now working close to his market. Six years after their first chance meeting in Namibia, Ndlovu was now working at double his original pace, overcrowding Bennie’s office with the most exquisite art pieces. Bennie took Ndlovu and his work to The South African Hunters Association’s annual congress, the Irene Art Market and the Pretoria Zoological Gardens where he was able to display his work. On one occasion an international film producer discovered Ndlovu and contracted him to create large animals from polystyrene. Ndlovu was contractually obliged to complete the work within four weeks, with severe penalties for non-compliance. To the producer’s great surprise Ndlovu completed the work in two weeks, to a standard beyond his wildest dreams. In 2011 illness struck and Ndlovu’s visits to South Africa began to dwindle. The next year he came to South Africa asking Bennie for help. Bennie took him to his own doctor. Ndlovu was examined and medicine prescribed. He then returned to Zimbabwe with his medication to recuperate.

hands ached so much that he was forced to rest for a few days. Bennie returned to South Africa determined to establish this phenomenal artist in his rightful place as one of Africa’s shining stars. Ndlovu’s work was now finding new homes in some of the world’s greatest collections in Russia, Poland, Germany, America and Canada, and the meetings between the Afrikaner and the Zimbabwean became more frequent. He

Ndlovu was laid to rest, and Bennie found himself mourning a friendship as he sat staring at Ndlovu’s work and the instruments of his trade adorning Bennie’s workshop where Ndlovu had crafted, chiseled and polished so many masterpieces. Unfortunately it did not happen. His condition worsened because he would not take the medication or eat. He believed he had been bewitched by his mother. Bennie spoke to him on the phone regularly, imploring him to come to South Africa for treatment. Eventually he travelled to Bennie in Pretoria again, bringing his son with him. He brought a few half-finished pieces, but in his emaciated condition he was unable to work. Bennie immediately took him to Steve Biko hospital where he was hospitalised and dismissed after five days. Bennie realised that he had to get the very ill Ndlovu back to his family in Zimbabwe. He put a bed in the canopy of his bakkie and sent one of his drivers with the ill Ndlovu and his son to Zimbabwe. At the Beit Bridge border post, Bennie’s driver, Johannes Ngomane, and Ndlovu’s son entered the immigration office for formalities. Upon their return they found Ndlovu dead on his bed in the canopy on the back of the bakkie. They phoned Bennie in great distress. Bennie advised them to go to the police and tell the truth. This landed them in deep water. Johannes was arrested on suspicion of murder and Ndlovu’s young son was taken into custody. Their fortune turned when a doctor who happened to pass through was able to confirm that the supposed victim had indeed passed away in the last hour and they were released. Ndlovu’s family in Buluwayo was contacted and they came down to get the corpse and the young boy.

Six months passed. Bennie phoned Ndlovu’s wife to enquire after the family’s welfare. She confirmed that they had indeed fallen upon hard times in the politically destroyed and economically impoverished Zimbabwe. Bennie offered some palliative help and to his great surprise received a return phone call a few days later. The stranger on the phone offered to come to South Africa to complete Ndlovu’s last unfinished work, the few pieces he had brought with him on his last trip. Bennie accepted. A few weeks later the phone rang again. It was the stranger calling from “the same place Bennie had always met his friend, Ndlovu,” he said the Pretoria station. When they saw each other, Bennie was surprised to see Ndlovu’s son with the stranger who introduced himself as K Lunga. “I know you,” K Lunga said to Bennie. Bennie was astounded, searching his memory for any recollection of the man during the years of Ndlovu’s relationship with him. “I was with Ndlovu in the taxi in 2007 in Okahandja in Namibia. It was my sister who had bought all the sculptures from the German shop,” said K Lunga. Bennie’s mind clicked. He walked to his office where so many of Ndlovu’s work took pride of place. He scoured all the pieces for the evidence he was looking for. Then he saw it - the name K Lunga inscribed on the foot pieces of two of the sculptures. He took it to K Lunga who recognised his inscription without hesitation. Bennie cleared Ndlovu’s room for the two, K Lunga and the young Ndlovu. He bought some more tools and the team continues to produce art work of the highest quality to the present day. This is to keeping alive the legacy of a poor, unknown master artist and craftsman, in some way representing the lost continent,

NEWS FROM THE GAME RESERVE

by Thinus Basson

WE ARE NOT ABANDONED... PLEASE DO NOT KIDNAP US! We were again blessed with a number of recent young arrivals including springbok, impala, bushbuck, duiker, steenbok and two kudu. Unfortunately, people picked up some of the young they found in the veld, possibly thinking that they may have been abandoned. It is natural instinct for antelope to leave their young in a safe place whilst they go off grazing – often for a few hours – and then return to let them suckle. By picking up a lamb or a calf, one may cause the mother not to find it again. Human scent on the young may also cause the mother to indeed abandon it. The SLHOA has embarked on a focussed programme to upgrade the Game Reserve in order to enhance the enjoyment thereof for our residents.

Game Ranger Mr Peter Kekana has been appointed as part-time Game Ranger. He will patrol the Game Reserve, do animal counts, assist with supplementary feeding in winter, ensure that rubbish is removed, etc.

Signage New signage will soon be erected to indicate what activities, such as fishing and picnicking, are allowed in parts of the game reserve.

Veld and Grazing As a first step to ensure the prime condition of our game, grazing is being restored through the regular removal of weeds and invasive plants. Vehicle tracks and dongas have been seeded with indigenous grasses and will be seeded again in future when rainfall conditions are favourable. Residents and visitors are urged not to drive on the barricaded areas so as to allow the grasses to re-establish. Golf carts are also not allowed in these areas. Something that would be much more enjoyable is to use the hiking trails which are now regularly maintained or the newly-marked cycle tracks.

Game Dr Pieter Odendaal generously offered three of his sable bulls on loan to the SLHOA. These gracious animals will shortly be in the Game Reserve for all to enjoy. Our sincere appreciation to Dr Odendaal. The SLHOA also purchased two waterbuck to add to our list of prime game species on the estate. The two zebra, unfortunately, did not behave well and had to be removed from the estate. They were particularly aggressive towards the young blesbok, where no lambs survived.

THE COOK ON THE CORNER FANCY A SPOT OF TEA? Although I grew up in a family of coffee snobs, I do love a good spot of tea. Growing up in a house next door to my aunt and uncle invariably meant that we ended up in their swimming pool on most days of the year, even when approaching winter. My aunt would always lovingly make us tea and sit outside to watch our pool shenanigans. The older we got, the less time we spent in the water and the more time we spent getting to know our aunt. Aunt Lynette is a timeless lady – always on her best behaviour and always caring for those around her. Truly the matriarch of our family, she has always protected and loved us without any reservation or concern. So much so that I always call her my second mom… I treasure the inputs she has had in my life and I’m so grateful to be a witness to her life. I think that it’s important to spend time with the special people in your life, to treasure them and to remind them of how much you care for them – whether over a pot of tea or a glass of wine. The multiple pots of tea consumed between my sister, myself, our cousins and our aunt have always been some of my favourite

Seline van der Wat

memories of my home town. These chats end up forming who and what you are. I just love that about food too – how it’s able to facilitate a conversation and understanding. The smell of Earl Grey tea is a nostalgic one for me; I see flashes of my life and happy memories at just one whiff of this fragrant drink. It’s therefore no surprise at all that I ended up experimenting with it in the kitchen – in everything from desserts to smoked meats. It is truly more versatile than just a simple afternoon cuppa. This recipe is an ode to our afternoon tea dates with our loved ones. The glass is filled with a coconut and Earl Grey tea set crème topped with some buttery meltin-your-mouth shortbread crumbs, and the result is a delicious combination of Earl Grey and coconut textures.

1. Combine the crème and the Earl Grey tea bags in a saucepan. Bring to the boil and allow to simmer for 2 minutes. Set aside and allow the tea to infuse into the crème for 10 minutes. 2. Allow the gelatine leaves for the set crème and the milk foam to bloom separately in two separate ice water bowls for at least 5 minutes. 3. Remove the Earl Grey tea bags from the crème, pressing out any liquid into the saucepan. Add the coconut cream and sugar and place the mixture back on the heat. Bring the mixture up to scalding point while stirring to dissolve the sugar. You can stop heating it once all the sugar has dissolved. 4. Squeeze all the water out of the gelatine leaves for the set crème, discarding the water. Place the leaves into the warm milk mixture and stir to dissolve. Divide the mixture between 4 glasses and place in the fridge to set. 5. Preheat your oven to 180°C with the convection (fan) setting on if possible. 6. Place the butter into a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and beat with the Earl Grey tea leaves until light and fluffy. Add the castor sugar and the pinch of salt and continue beating until incorporated. 7. Sift the flour twice and divide into two. Add the first half of the flour to the beaten butter mixture and mix for a minute to incorporate. Repeat with the second half of the flour. 8. Turn the mixture out onto some cling wrap and wrap tightly. Place in the fridge and allow to cool for 3 hours or until the dough is quite firm from the setting of the butter. 9. Crumble the prepared dough onto a lined or sprayed baking tray and bake at 180°C for about 15 minutes, mixing around the dough every few minutes to ensure it browns evenly. 10. Remove and allow to cool before sprinkling it over the set tea crème to serve.

Take a tour through Spain When bringing a Spanish-style interior to your home you would look at a colour palette with blues, greens, whites and browns – coastline-inspired to create a Mediterranean look and feel. Other colours that also play a huge role in the Spanish style are terracotta reds and oranges. The reds and oranges are usually used on the floors and the roofs of the homes, giving a warm and inviting feeling to the house. Bringing some copper into your dÊcor will also turn your house into a Spanish home. Creating depth is one of the elements you will need in order to create the Spanish look in your home. You can use plaster or stucco

Spanish Colonial style

the story of

to achieve this. What will work even better is combining this with natural-coloured walls, which will give it a good balance. Keep your accessories to the minimum and choose larger accessories rather than small ones. Vases are always a great idea as you can have a few; however, vary the sizes, shapes and colours. There are two very distinct Spanish styles. Firstly you get a Spanish Colonial style and secondly the Spanish Revival style. The Colonial style was inspired by the local Native American culture and the Revival style was inspired by tourism to southern Spain.

Spanish Revival style

Spanish Colonial style design, also known as the Mission style, has much in common with the architecture of the historic churches of Spain. The style shows in their rooftops, courtyards, arches and walls. The colours used most often consist of beige, yellow, red, purple, pink and white.

The Revival style began in California in 1920. One of the most distinct elements of this style is the wrought iron gate. Other than the gates they also have elements like stucco walls, terracotta roofs and fireplaces, and carved entry doors. They have a more detailed design than the Colonial style.

Solid wood, simplistic design, bell-shaped fireplaces, stone tiles, stained glass and pottery are the main features in Colonial style homes. Some people like to carve saints into wood for another colonial touch.

The furniture associated with the Spanish Revival style is usually custom-built furniture or pieces from Spain itself. The wooden furniture is always either oak- or pinewood and they have detailed carving on their doors. The Revival style usually combines both matt and gloss finishes with their colorful designs.

importance of income protection Income Protection is important in your financial planning. Life tends to throw us curveballs when we least expect it, and while not all of them leave us feeling uncomfortable, not getting a pay cheque for a month or two can turn our lives upside down. After all, our expenses don’t stop and bills will keep arriving.

Income protection should be the first consideration for some people, but both income protection and disability policies should be considered in a personal financial plan as they cater for different needs.

Protecting your ability to earn an income is probably one of the most important steps you, as a professional, can take in your financial planning, say Marius Spies and Johan Brits, Sanlam Financial Planners at BluCrest BlueStar Financial Advisory Services in Lynnwood.

The most important consideration is to discuss this with a qualified financial planner so that your exact needs can be established.

Falling ill or getting injured may affect our income for a few days or perhaps a few months, but it can also impact our income for the rest of our lives – depending on how severe the event or experience is. Income protection cover ensures that you have a steady income when you are unable to work due to disability, illness or injury. It typically replaces your income and can help you continue to afford your everyday living expenses. Income protection policies differ from lump sum disability benefits in a number of ways. Importantly, income protection provides cover for temporary disability conditions and can offer cover until the day you retire. Income protection products also tend to have shorter waiting periods compared to disability lump sum benefit products.

How do you protect your biggest asset?

While in the past income protection policies covered individuals only for lost personal income, Sanlam has introduced a more comprehensive offering that will cover you for events beyond the loss of income. The Sanlam Income Protection product can, for instance, provide cover if you need to take time off work to look after your sick spouse or if you suffer an impairment that raises your cost of living and reduces your relative income. This benefit can further cover your practice for up to two years if you are disabled by paying for overhead expenses. Contact BluCrest BlueStar Financial Advisory Services about Sanlam Income Protector. Call the office on 012 470 0850, send an e-mail to support@blucrest.co.za or visit www.blucrest.co.za Sanlam is a Licensed Financial Services Provider.

Professional people’s income is their biggest asset. Sanlam offers a range of income protection solutions that not only cover loss of income should you be unable to work due to disability, sickness or injury, but also events which can reduce your income. With income protection you can plan more accurately for your needs during times of financial strain. After all, school fees, bills and instalments all still need to be paid! The 5 best functional training exercises Functional training is highly overlooked within your classic gym environment. This is due to the fact that most gyms are equipped with a large variety of weight machines which isolate and target only specific muscle groups. In terms of building muscle, static weight machines are highly effective. However, the downfall in using them is that by isolating specific muscles, the movements are restricted to a single plane of motion, meaning that they offer very few benefits in relation to the movements the human body makes doing regular daily activities. Functional training, on the other hand, emphasises the human body’s ability to move in six degrees of freedom - up or down, left or right, backwards or forwards, rotating left or right, rotating up or down, and moving from side to side. More specifically, it allows individuals to perform daily activities more easily by increasing strength, joint mobility and stability, posture and agility. Furthermore, it helps build muscle and decreases the potential for injury performing daily tasks, provided that the exercises are performed with good technique and form. Whether you lift weights, crates or kids, these five functional exercises will help you get the job done:

1. Pull-ups Pull-ups are a phenomenal way to build upper body strength and muscle definition. It enables the body to climb and pull things towards itself with ease.

The movement engages multiple upper body muscles simultaneously in one swift, controlled motion. Though seemingly simplistic, a pullup is one of the most difficult movements to master, and most people are unable to complete one full rep.

Execution: Grab the bar with an overhand grip and begin with a dead hang where your arms are shoulder-width apart and fully extended. Pull yourself up towards the bar by bending your arms at the elbow and bring your chin above the bar. In a controlled motion, lower yourself back down to your starting position.

Progression: Aim to complete 4 sets of 10 consistent reps. If you are not yet strong enough to complete a rep, the following two methods will help get you there: 1) Negative pull-ups - This movement places emphasis on the lowering movement of the pull-up (eccentric movement). Start with feet placed shoulder width apart on the ground or a raised step/box. Jump to grasp the bar with your chin above the bar. With a controlled motion, slowly lower yourself back down to the ground and repeat. 2) Assisted pull-ups - With the aid of a resistance band. (Resistance bands are an inexpensive way to assist you in perfecting your pullups. Different widths are available to provide you with different levels of assistance.) Secure the band in a running knot around the bar.

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

Place one knee in the band. Start from a dead hang. Pull yourself up towards the bar and bring your chin above the bar. Slowly lower yourself back down to the starting position.

2. Barbell Deadlift The deadlift targets the entire posterior chain of the body (lower back, glutes, hamstrings and calves). It builds incredible leg strength and provides the human body with the ability to perform explosive movements like jumping with ease. It is imperative for a deadlift to be performed with perfect form before progressing to avoid injury.

Execution: Start with the barbell on the floor and place your toes under the bar, slightly shoulder width apart. Squat down, keeping your spine in a straight, neutral position, and place your hands with an overhand grip on either side of the outside of your legs. Pull your shoulders down and straighten your back to push your chest up. Look forward with your neck in line with your spine. Upward Motion: With your core engaged, lift by pushing through your heels, bringing your hips forward and lifting the bar simultaneously. Remember to keep your back, shoulders and neck stable. Keeping the bar close to your body, extend your legs and squeeze your glutes once the upward movement is completed. Downward motion: Keeping your core engaged and your back, neck and shoulders stable, start lowering the bar back down in a controlled motion by bending at the knees and hips. Finish with the bar on the floor, over your toes.

Progression: Start with a low weight to perfect your form. Perform 4 sets of 5-10 reps. Once you are comfortable with the motion and can perform all the sets comfortably, aim to increase your barbell weight by 2.510kgs, depending on your strength.

3. Dumbbell Press The dumbbell press engages a variety of large muscle groups simultaneously. These include the quadriceps, glutes, abdomen, shoulders, biceps and triceps. The movement builds explosive strength and muscular endurance for the body to be able to perform simplistic tasks like jumping, standing up and pushing heavy objects.

Execution: Start with your feet placed shoulder width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Your upper arms are placed in line with your shoulders and your elbows bent at a 90° angle to the upper arms in a ‘hands up’ position. Begin by keeping your arms in the starting position and lowering into a squat position by pushing your hips backwards, but prevent your knees from going over the line of your toes. Return to the starting position and press the dumbbells upward by extending your arms.

4. Burpee to squat jump The burpee is an excellent strength and cardiovascular exercise which increases general fitness substantially. It incorporates a squat, leg thrust, push-up, forward jump and vertical jump, resulting in an overall, full-body workout.

Execution: Begin in a standing position with your feet shoulder width apart. Drop into a squat position with both hands on the ground. Kick your feet back to resume a push-up position and do a push-up. Return your feet to the squat position. Jump up from the squat position and do an additional squat jump. Perform 4 sets of 10 as part of a superset.

5. Push-ups A push-up is a popular, functional exercise that targets the entire upper body (arms, pectorals, scapular stabilizers, deep spine muscles and transverse abdominals). Performing push-ups on a regular basis enables the body to improve muscular strength and endurance, improve posture and prevent lower back injuries.

Execution: Start with your knees on the ground and your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Position your body by placing your feet so that your body is in a straight line. Your head should be looking slightly ahead of you. With your core contracted and arms straight, begin lowering your body to the ground by bending only your arms. Once your chest is just about touching the floor, pause slightly and explode back up to the starting position. Perform 4 sets of 10 reps.

Progression: There are many variations of push-ups. Once you have mastered the basic push-up, try different variations such as the close-grip push-up or the T-push-up.

Communicating in relationships DR ILSE RUANE PSYCHOLOGY

The key to a sound and long-lasting relationship is communication. If you are to develop a deep, strong relationship, you need to be able to share information about yourself and encourage your partner similarly to express him or herself. Good communication with a natural flow consists of three essential skills: listening to what the other person is saying; expressing how you feel and what you think; and accepting the other person’s opinions and feelings even if they are different from your own. The manner in which some people communicate with each other may cause permanent damage to their relationship. These “communication spoilers” interrupt the speaker’s natural flow, making him or her less inclined to talk. They occur most commonly in times of stress, but if they are allowed to continue over

a prolonged period, they cause conversation to suffer, resentment to build up, and emotional distance to increase. For the average person listening takes up more waking hours than any other activity. Sadly, few people are good listeners. It is enormously frustrating to talk to somebody about something important and find that they have not really listened but are responding in an automatic, pre-programmed, mechanical way. Listening is more than just hearing. Effective listening is an active, not passive, skill made up of a number of set components. The quality of your listening greatly affects the nature of the speaker’s communication and your ability to understand what has been said. Listening skills affect your personal relationships.

BE A GOOD LISTENER 1. FACE THE SPEAKER

2. USE OPEN QUESTIONS

Sit where you can clearly see the speaker’s face, on the same level. Make eye contact, but do not stare.

Do not allow one-word answers. Allow the speaker to open up. Say “How do you feel?” instead of “Did you feel sad?”

4. PARAPHRASE

5. DO NOT INTERRUPT

Briefly restate the essence of what has been said in your own words.

Allow the speaker to think and express his/ her feelings without interruptions or prompting. Wait. Be patient.

3. BE ENCOURAGING Put the speaker at ease by making encouraging noises to show you are listening. Say “Yes”, “Hmm”, or “Really”. Nod your head.

6. REFLECT

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

Mirror back to the speaker the emotions and meanings in what s/he says. For example, “So you’re saying that you’re angry with me”.

Relationships are at their healthiest when both parties can express themselves assertively and openly. Disclosing personal information helps your relationship develop, but this needs to be done in a particular way and in a gradual and reciprocal fashion. Remember that you and your partner are different people. You cannot always agree on the way you think and feel. Accepting each other and tolerating the differences, as well as any resulting frustration, are essential keys for relationships to flourish.

EXPRESS YOURSELF 1. TIME IT RIGHT

2. BE CONCISE

Choose the right time and place. Avoid discussing important issues when you are tired. It may also help to make notes beforehand.

Stick to the point. Do not trawl through old, stale issues. Do not allow yourself to nag or be side-tracked.

Begin with “I” to show that you accept responsibility. Say “I feel” or “I think” and not “You make me feel…”.

4. BE ASSERTIVE

5. CHOOSE YOUR WORDS

6. SEEK A REACTION

Describe irritating behaviour, your feel-

Be careful not to insult, threaten or denigrate. Be honest and positive but tactful. Criticise actions rather than personality.

Make your point and then listen to the other person’s point of view. Understand and accept his/her reaction.

ings and the effects. Say, “When you won’t get up, I feel annoyed because it makes me late”.

Although personality is clearly a factor in the way you relate to others, it has been suggested that men and women are fundamentally different in the way they communicate. This may be due to the process of socialisation, as men are programmed to be more competitive, or it may be a genetic trait. • Men tend to offer solutions to problems and want to achieve results whereas women tend to share feelings and discuss difficulties. • Men’s talk tends to revolve around passing on information and displaying knowledge, skills, status and independence, while women’s talk is based on sharing similar experiences as well as creating intimacy and rapport. • Men are more prone to mulling things over and then formulating and expressing the most correct, practical and useful response whereas women are more prone to thinking aloud and sharing their inner dialogue, often using poetic licence to make their feelings known.

3. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Being aware of and tolerating some of these differences in communication styles can lead to a more accepting attitude to your partner. At the heart of all good relationships is a balance of exchange in which each partner gives and receives. If one partner gives a lot but receives little in return, s/he is likely to feel dissatisfied. This “give and take” is a skill that needs to be learned. You must be aware of your own needs and express what you want and how you feel, and you must listen to and understand the needs of your partner. Improve your communication by using the practical skills mentioned – you might discover that you and your partner are able relate in a more enjoyable manner.

The Joy of being a Child

By Micheal Westman Estate Supervisor

How happy were your children when they were presented with a motorised scooter?

The joy on their faces - unbelieveable! They can’t wait

for the batteries to be ‘’powered up’’ and to hit the road on their new Hover Boards, wind blowing through their hair… FREEDOM at last!

so. As a matter of fact, I have had a resident overtake me on a intersection where I stopped to obey the rules of the road.

The Question The Observation

On my rounds through the estate I have noticed more and more

youngsters riding in tandem and in some cases lifting their mates on scooters so as not to be late for their next appointment. So too have I seen them racing to see who has the fastest model and to meet up again after the race to high five and burst out laughing at the finish line. The champion of Silver Lakes has won again!

Only ONE question… if a car does not stop at these intersections

and our children on these battery-powered vehicles or even a bicycle do not stop at these intersections and they happen to meet by accident, WHO will be the champion and WHO will put their arms in the air signalling that they have won the race?

The Facts

I have also noticed, to my horror, that these same champions

and other participants in the races fail to obey the rules of the road. This, of course, I suppose is cool. This is the norm for them because it is the way they are taught, by us, the parents, who incidently also do not obey the rules of the road by stopping at these intersections. We all remember the old saying “lead by example”. Do we as adults lead by example? Judging by the amount of transgressions I note on a dailly basis, I do not believe

An Urgent Request

For the sake of our children and the joys of being a child, dear

parents, please obey the rules of the road by stopping at intersections and obeying the speed limits of the estate. As adults it is our duty and our resposibilty to our children and others to lead by example. STOP before it’s too late.
