The SKINS story.
Since SKINS began over a decade ago, we’ve been passionate about helping athletes excel. We’re mad about sport and obsessed by the fierce, competitive spirit which drives outstanding achievements – whether on the open road, the field or up a gruelling mountain.
Back in 1982, the world’s first wireless heart rate monitor was introduced – allowing athletes to check their pulse rate while in motion for the first time ever. In 2010, with the new 400 Series, SKINS introduces a technology of equal significance –compression levels measured on moving athletes.
SKINS was started in 1996 by an aspiring Aussie bloke. He had a sports science background and a simple, bold ambition; to do all the physical stuff he could ten years ago – ski treacherous slopes, cycle all day, or endure a fiery game of footy – and still feel bullet-proof.
Founded in Australia, we have innate respect for the underdog; for determination, passion and pure grit. We’re inspired by great sporting moments – those tear-jerking, adrenaline-inducing achievements – etched in the minds of sports fans the world over.
We’ve pushed the boundaries and taken technology and compression one step further. Every component is based on solid research and analysis. We tested our garments on hundreds of real athletes using 3D body scanning and dynamic compression measuring techniques. This helped us determine in exact detail where compression is needed for optimal circulation, injury prevention and maximum comfort.
He started with the knowledge that increased blood circulation helps the body perform better. By wrapping his muscles in a second ‘skin’, he could accelerate blood flow and increase oxygen delivery to working muscles, improving his power, speed, stamina and recovery. It took five years to invent and refine the very first pair of SKINS tights. Yet it wasn’t long before athletes all over the world swore by them and still do.

If the compression level is too high it can restrict blood flow and cause friction between muscles. If it’s too low it won’t provide any benefit at all. A study in motion: 400 Series.
SKINS are designed to increase the flow of oxygen to muscles. We achieve this in two key ways:
Dynamic Gradient Compression. Athletes don’t stand still. So to measure the true effectiveness of SKINS, it’s essential we consider athletes in motion; doing what they do best. In developing our revolutionary new 400 Series range, we set out to do just that. In one of the most comprehensive apparel tests ever, we studied hundreds of professional and amateur athletes to determine the compression requirements of each muscle group both in motion and while static, during recovery.
Gradient Compression. SKINS gradient compression has been engineered to provide the correct level of surface pressure to specific body parts, enhancing circulation and delivering more oxygen to active muscles. Improved circulation also helps to eliminate lactic acid build-up and other metabolic wastes so you can go harder for longer and recover faster.
The result? SKINS Dynamic Gradient Compression. Temperature. SKINS fabrics help optimise your body temperature in both warm and cool conditions. Muscles warm up quickly through enhanced circulation, while the superior wicking promotes evaporative cooling to help maintain a more constant body temperature. Odour. SKINS have antimicrobial elements built into the fabric – they can’t be washed out no matter how often SKINS are worn. These elements discourage the growth of bacteria by absorbing odour-causing substances. Sun. Wearing SKINS equals 50+ UV protection – preventing harsh UV rays from penetrating the skin. Warp knit construction has a ‘float line’ between loops to aid moisture management. Multiple yarns are used for added strength and to eliminate running if the fabric is torn.

Beyond sports performance.
How to wash. Simply machine wash on a gentle cycle using warm water (below 30°C) without fabric conditioner. Don’t bleach, iron or tumble dry. Wash with like colours. Always rinse thoroughly in cool, fresh water if you’ve been in salt water.
Injury prevention. The wrapping and compression of muscles through SKINS products can dramatically improve muscle awareness and focus (proprioception). Compression also limits the risk of injury caused from overexerted muscles.
Swimming in SKINS. Both our TRI products and the rest of the SKINS range feel at home in the water. Just be sure to stay away from chlorinated pools, as the chlorine can damage the elasticity of the fabrics.
We help muscles breathe.
Superior construction. The fabric in SKINS is warp knitted using multiple fine quality yarns to give superior performance. Warp knit fabrics have no natural stretch – instead, the spandex mix ensures specific levels of elasticity and perfectly controlled compression. Some other compression brands use circular kit which has a natural stretch, making it hard to maintain the correct level of compression. Circular knit fabrics are also less durable and likely to run if snagged.
Medical conditions. SKINS BioAcceleration Technology can speed up recovery from injuries through engineered gradient compression and improved muscle oxygenation. In addition, SKINS can help reduce jetlag, growing pains, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, lymphoedema and varicose veins. We fine-tuned compression. From the 800,000 measurements taken in the 3D study, we established 400 key fitting points on the human body. We determined exactly where and how much compression is needed during activity. We then cut and shaped our garments accordingly. By catering so finely to the body’s needs while in motion, we’ve been able to deliver superior biomechanical support and optimal comfort. This is the basis of dynamic gradient compression.
We studied athletes. We performed a wide-scale study of hundreds of athletes, amateur and professional, of all shapes and sizes. We developed a proprietary dynamic compression measuring technique and 3D body scanning technology, and used these to study the athlete’s anatomy and the way they move.
We gave our garments a memory. Biomechanically placed Memory MX fabrics provide controlled, consistent elasticity and perfectly focused support, complimenting the body’s natural movement and reducing the risk of injury.
