n the mid-1990s, Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele was inspired by a powerful idea. It came to fruition in 1996: reviving the watchmaking heritage of the company’s founding father, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, and recapturing Chopard’s horological legitimacy. He thus undertook the creation of Chopard Manufacture, a fully-fledged watch Manufacture in Fleurier. Fulfilling this lofty ambition involved overcoming numerous hurdles. To be recognised as a Manufacture, a watch company must produce at least one ‘in-house’

Chopard Manufacture is celebrating its 20th birthday with a flurry of new movements and exceptional creations being presented throughout the year
mechanical movement. That was precisely the stumbling block for Chopard which, despite decades of experience, did not have a proprietary movement at the time. Chopard thus decided to take action from 1993 onwards. With this in mind, Mr Scheufele paid a first visit to Fleurier, a historical cradle of watchmaking since the 18th century. The ‘quartz watch crisis’ that had struck the picturesque Val-de-Travers in the 1970s had left deep scars that were still visible in the early 1990s. He knew that this remote region harboured a vast range of watchmaking competence that was lying fallow, and was determined to revive it in order to develop the first in-house movement. The entrepreneurial philosophy cultivated by Chopard, as well as the high demands of its international clientele, called for an exceptional solution. The decision was thus taken to aim for a movement equipped with a self-winding micro-rotor that would offer two key advantages: on the one

Featuring over 100 major works, the exhibition spans the six decades in which O’Keeffe was at her most productive, charting the progression from her early abstract experiments to her late works and dispelling persistent clichés about the artist and her painting. oche Bobois is a world leader in furniture design and distribution with 250 showrooms around the globe. The company works alongside renowned designers and Haute Couture fashion houses such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel Maison and Missoni Home, to offer a broad range of exclusive made-to-order designs. Each item is manufactured with a high level of customisation in small European workshops. The history of Roche Bobois stems from the story of two families, the Roches and the Chouchans. In 1950, Jacques Roche purchased the old Alexandre Dumas theatre on rue de Lyon in Paris and built two stores. His sons, Philippe and François, joined the company and they began to distribute the very best contemporary furniture. This was heavily inspired by Bauhaus designers, such as Minvielle, Steiner and Airbourne, and equally

inspired by renowned designers such as Pierre Paulin and Marc Berthier. At this time, the Chouchans were selling furniture in Paris on Boulevard Sébastopol at ‘Au Beau Bois’ (which later became Bobois). Not yet acquainted, Francois and Philippe Roche and Patrick and Jean-Claude Chouchan, all attended an expo in Copenhagen with the idea of importing Scandinavian furniture to sell in Paris. As a result of meeting, together they designed their first catalogue which launched the national franchise. In 1961, they designed their first nationwide advertising campaign in Elle magazine. Sales boomed and from this point on Roche Bobois gained its own identity and became a brand name. We asked Julien Sannier, managing director of Roche Bobois trade & contracts division, to share his advice on designing and furnishing a lounge. “By experience, the first step is to choose the design of your sofa,” he says. “The sofa must not be too big and must not occupy most of the space of the room. Colours are also very important and they must be in line with the original concept you have in
mind. The sofa will not dictate what else must go in the room but will certainly guide you.” Julien goes on to say that one of the biggest challenges today is to create an interior that stands out, is not predicable and, most importantly, is yours. “Symmetry and harmony of colours are always a good bet,” he advises, “but success will come from adding personal touches: art, ornaments, objects. The lounge must not look like a furniture show room but like a home that reflects your personality.” As with most things in life, it’s the finer details that really make the difference. “Like the stitching and the buckle on a luxury hand bag,” says Julien, “the details are very important when it comes to interior design. Saddle stitching, brass, marble, solid wood, exceptional aniline thick leather are examples of materials and details that would contribute to elegance and sophistication. “Less is more, there is also no need to make the room too heavy but light and elegant. Comfort-comfort-comfort, because it can always look good and attractive but if it is not comfortable…forget it.” Julien sums it all up by quoting the great Coco Chanel who said, ‘Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury’. www.roche-bobois.com

business to include the construction of traditional displacement yachts, and today we deliver superyachts within the 34 – 75 metres size range, and beyond.” Over the last 35 years, Heesen has delivered approximately 170 yachts to a truly international clientele, all built with the same devotion to quality and attention to detail. “The current fleet includes aluminium, steel, displacement, semi-displacement and the new revolutionary fast displacement,” explains Mr Cavendish. “Heesen is financially secure, large enough to cope with complex construction, small enough to care about each project, motivated to pioneer innovations and dedicated to continuing the tradition of Dutch quality shipbuilding.”
The company’s yachts are a masterpiece of engineering and this level of specialisation brings with it many possibilities for customisation. “A client who comes to us for a full custom yacht, usually comes with his own design and (sometimes) also with naval architects,” says Mr Cavendish. “So first we have to double check the feasibility of the project.” Once all the most important facts and specifications have been established, Heesen makes sure the finished boat truly reflects the wishes and lifestyle of the client. Superyachts have evolved greatly over the last few years. Mr Cavendish reports that the most dramatic change is in the increase in their size, followed by the advancement of new technology and the increased attention given to protecting the environment. Galactica Star at 65 metres is a multi-award winning example. She has a top speed of 28 knots, a 20 knot cruising speed and a range of 4,200 nautical miles providing top performance for length, combined with completely Dutch, custombuilt levels of luxury. Externally there is a 20 metre sundeck, a duplex beach club covering 25 per cent of the main and lower decks, and a touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck. Up to 12 guests may sleep in custom-built interiors, including a full-beam master suite with private balcony and a VIP suite on the upper deck. “Galactica Star was a first in many aspects,” says Mr Cavendish, “but more than anything it is her revolutionary fast displacement hull form, the radical design and the überluxurious interior by award-winning London-based designers Bannenberg & Rowell.”
Now Heesen has announced the launch of the largest yacht in its fleet to date, the 70 metre Galactica Super Nova. One of the top 200 largest yachts in the world and one of the fastest yachts for her size, the superyacht will make her debut in September at the Monaco Yacht Show. Galactica Super Nova also utilises the revolutionary fast displacement hull but, thanks to the addition of a third engine to power a booster jet, she will be capable of reaching a top speed of more than 30 knots. ¢ www.heesenyachts.com

A CENTURY OF SUPERCARS The annual Classic & Sports Car Show has launched a global poll to name the greatest supercar of the last 100 years. The event’s most prestigious award was decided by public vote on Sunday at Villa Erba. The subject of a full restoration by Lamborghini PoloStorico, the green Miura SV was built and launched at Geneva Motor Show in 1971. The car is the first full restoration by Lamborghini PoloStorico since it was officially established in spring 2015, and the year-long project has seen the car comprehensively and accurately restored to its original state.

“In the 10 years I’ve owned the Jag it has been a lot of fun. I’ve only covered about 1,000 miles a year in it since I bought it and it’s done about 85K in total now. The Jag’s been very reliable, but like all older cars things do go wrong, and on this one it has tended to be things like rubbers and other minor niggly stuff. During its time with me I’ve had a new power steering unit fitted, a new radiator, and overhauled the brakes; most recently I’ve treated the car to a back to metal respray so I’m happy. The insurance costs me about £400 per year which isn’t bad. Some garages do tend to overprice the work on the car though, often based on their perception of the value, so you need to be careful on that score. The car gets a lot of attention and it’s comforting to know that it is appreciating in value.”

f you’re looking for an area that’s a little different to the prime London norm but which still provides easy access to all that the city offers, then prepare to be spoilt for choice. Stratford and its surrounding areas have been transformed since the London Olympics took place there in 2012 while locations within the ‘City Fringe’ and ‘Tech City’ are regularly making headlines in the property press. Matt Cobb, associate director at Residential City Fringe comments, “In the Eastern City Fringe market, £1 million can offer a variety of different property avenues worth exploring, for example in EC1 you could consider a onebedroom loft style apartment or small sized two-bedroom apartment. In EC2, a budget of £1 million opens up a chance to buy onebedroom loft style apartments, or an average
sized two-bedroom apartment. If you move east into E1, you can choose from one, two and three-bedroom apartments located in an area that is evolving and improving constantly. “Moving further eastwards into E2/ E8 means more space for your money and generous two and three-bedroom apartments are within budget. WC1 is also worth considering, but you’re more likely to be looking at a one-bedroom apartment, possibly you may find the odd two-bedroom. N1 offers one, two and three-bedroom options, both apartments and small houses.” Mr Cobb advises that, due to the significant developments and regeneration of these areas, all are expected to continue to grow. “Shoreditch in EC1 is expected to achieve significant growth still, as well as Old Street EC1,” he says. “Whitechapel is also one to watch.” Crossrail, a 73-mile railway line currently under development in London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Essex, will also prove greatly beneficial to regenerated areas. John Christie, affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, says, “The Bahamas is performing well in the main luxury markets including Lyford Cay, Albany, Old Fort Bay and Bakers Bay. People are buying homes and private islands. We are seeing a number of European buyers leaving the Continent as

They take place from August 5th to 21st with the Paralympic Games following from September 7th to 18th. Well over 10,000 athletes will compete in the first edition of the Olympic Games in South America, but its reach will extend far beyond sports. The event will leave a legacy, not just for Rio de Janeiro but all of Brazil, including education, culture and sustainability. Believing that culture is a country’s first calling card, the Rio 2016 Committee has devised a programme called ‘Celebra’ to represent and promote the diversity of Brazilian culture. The city is to transform its entire waterfront area into a giant entertainment zone for the duration of the festivities. The newly renovated port district, in the heart of Rio's historic centre, will be the location for a new ‘Olympic Boulevard’ that will stretch some three kilometres along the

dockside. Visitors will be able to watch all the Olympic action on big screens, while listening to musicians from Brazil and beyond and enjoying a wide variety of food and drinks. he French Riviera’s combination of history, culture, world-class beaches, stunning seascapes, gastronomy, good schools and international airport access makes it a perfect destination for overseas buyers. Recent data from property specialist Home Hunts revealed that the most coveted locations are the Mougins and Valbonne areas; Cap d’Antibes and Cannes; Villefranche-sur-Mer and SaintJean-Cap-Ferrat; and Saint-Tropez. Both medieval villages, Mougins and Valbonne offer authentic charm, good amenities and have a busy events calendar. “These villages have not yet been disturbed by tourists in the summer,” says Amy Bault, a Riviera consultant for Home Hunts. “They are also International Property & Travel

close to several international schools. The Cap d’Antibes and Cannes areas are 30 minutes from Nice airport and close to sandy beaches. Both areas are excellent for yacht lovers and clients invest in these areas as they have the dream Riviera lifestyle on their doorstep.” The French Riviera’s market was boosted by price falls inland and buyers are now getting more for their money in locations such as Biot, Opio, Roquefort-les-Pins and Châteauneuf de Grasse. “Grasse is also a great area for investment as the centre is being completely redeveloped and there is a direct train line to Cannes,” advises Tim Swannie, director of Home Hunts. Paul Bernard, agency manager at John Taylor Cannes, reports that the majority of high-end buyers in the Cannes area are international clients. “Most notably Britons, due to the current strength of the pound; Scandinavians, Americans, Middle Easterners and Russians. At John Taylor, foreigners constitute 70% of buyers purchasing very high end properties above €10 million. Cannes, and its surroundings, is one of the most expensive real estate markets in France, and indeed the world, due to a great demand and limited supply, even though prices have dropped in the last two years.” Beauchamp Estates Cannes comments, “The real estate market on the French Riviera is fairly atypical, as it is made up of a series of luxury ‘micro-markets’. The offer remains scarce on the coast, and that scarcity keeps the prices high. Today the favourable tax environment allows a certain degree of flexibility to new potential buyers, as despite the risk of market fluctuations, the legendary Côte d’Azur is still a dream destination for wealthy French or foreigners who seek to acquire exclusive properties.” Saint-Tropez also remains a legendary destination with a peninsula studded with large villas surrounded by vast plots of land in the forest. Josh Buckley at H Barnes & Co comments, “Saint-Tropez is a place where people ‘meet’, and many friends rent or buy property here in order to be close to one another during the summer. The most desirable and expensive residential areas are Les Parcs de Saint-Tropez – a private gated exclusive residential ‘domaine’ where some of the most expensive villas are situated and prices run into tens of millions. Other desirable areas are Cap Tahiti, Les Graniers, le Capon. Saint-Tropez has a varied clientele. It has always been popular with the Belgians, Italians, French, and Swedish, but also loved by the British, Americans, Eastern Europeans, and wealthy Middle Eastern families.” Over the years, H Barnes & Co has seen a shift in demand and popularity for properties closer to the centre of town. “Previously, people were drawn to the aspect of large houses and plots which were typically located towards the beaches of Saint- Tropez,” says Mr Buckley. “As time has gone by with the increasing popularity of hotels, restaurants, bars and high end retailers, a new discerning exclusive buyer has emerged, who requires access to all of this on their doorstep. It’s fair to say that such accessibility and properties in poll position are rare.” 124

Tuscany is not usually regarded as a beach destination, even though it has around 250 miles of coastline. Beauchamp Estates advises that it is the southern Tuscan coastal region from South of Livorno to the Maremma that offers the best mix of uncrowded beaches, relatively unspoiled scenery and good places to eat and drink. The lesser-known Tuscan coast remains full of secrets like Bolgheri, part of a series of beautiful hilltop towns that once kept invaders at bay. A bastion of well-preserved architecture, they are mostly free of crowds. Thanks to its mild climate, quiet and beauty of the landscape, the Bolgheri Coast became a well-known seaside resort for a relaxing holiday immersed in nature. Nowadays it’s partially used as expository space for fairs and cultural events during the summer. Elisa Biglia of Great Estate comments, “When one envisions a Tuscan holiday home, they usually picture a rural property set amongst vineyards. The coastline of Tuscany is a relatively new hotspot for British buyers, especially Porto Santo Stefano, which is on the promontory of Monte Argentario. The area provides a true taste of Italy with its stunning beaches, tiny fishing villages and pastel-painted homes either in the port itself or nestled amongst the cliff tops. Monte Argentario is a densely wooded island, linked to the mainland by road via two sandbanks lined with family beach clubs. It’s a very popular for holiday homes with wealthy Romans and millionaires from around the world, however we are starting to see an increase in British buyers too.” Exceptionally large villas by the sea can go for up to €20 million but prices are reasonably static at the moment according to Ms Biglia. “Property prices on the Tuscan coast peak in exclusive Forte dei Marmi and Viareggion further north,” she explains. “In Argentario, they are about 20% lower. The lifestyle is more laid back but totally Italian. Porto Santo Stefano is a very lively all year round port due to its fishing and ferry industry. There is a daily market selling fresh seafood, 128

while crime is low and it’s easy to make a day trip to go exploring and shopping to Siena and Rome, or the islands of Corsica, Giglio and Elba. Furthermore, if you own a holiday home here there is very high demand for rental properties during the summer months. You can expect to earn upwards of €577 a week for a one-bedroom flat to €7,725 for a secluded detached villa with five or more bedrooms.” As for Liguria, which is considered to be the very heart of the Italian Riviera, Simone Rossi, general manager at Gate-away.com, says, “Quality of life, mild climate, nature and appealing landscapes, art and history, culture and traditions are only some reasons to choose Liguria as the ideal destination. Food and cooking excellences, handicrafts, fashion and all made in Italy products are other good reasons to live in Liguria and in Italy, even more if you have financial resources.”
