All students over the past 12 months have challenged heir ability to understand and communicate different deas by completing the English syllabus
Year 11 students began their senior academic subject by responding to and creating their own work related exts This allowed students to improve their own personal and professional communication skills in both written and verbal contexts We then looked at creating and reviewing stories based upon personal reflection and experiences Students created and performed their own short stories as well as analysed the newly chosen ext “Between A Rock And A Hard Place”
Year 12 English students began 2022 by creating their own persuasive speech highlighting a particular issue of their choice It was interesting to see how passionate students became when able to choose the topic of their own learning. As ever the Common Internal Assessment played a pivotal role in the assessment calendar and students responded fantastically They were able to interpret a range of different travel related texts The year concluded with students reviewing and explaining the Australian Cultural Identity of their own chosen texts and creating short stories to support them
The highlight of the year was the ATCNB inaugural Flash Fiction competition to celebrate World Book Week Students created their own 100 word text in a mode of their choice We congratulated our winners this year Thomas Carnes, Emilie Cashmore and Jadzia Richards
We are all very proud of the students in English this year, and their ability to continually display the College values of Courage, Engagement and Gratitude
Wow! What an exciting and productive year Australian Trade College North Brisbane has had in Mathematics Both year levels crammed as many practical and real world skills as they could into 2022 This year also saw the implementation of the General Mathematics stream which was an overwhelming and unqualified success
In the first semester, the year eleven Essential Mathematicians studied: Number, Representing Data, and Graphs. In semester two they studied: Managing Money, Time and Motion, and Data Collection In semester one, the year twelve cohort studied: Measurement; Scales, Plans and Models; and Summarising and Comparing Data In semester two, they studied: Bivariate Graphs, Probability and Relative Frequencies, and Loans and Compound Interest
Being the first year of our General Mathematics program, there was only a year eleven class However, they certainly wasted no time; hitting the ground running and relishing the opportunity to study topics of a more eloquent and abstract nature In the first semester they studied: Consumer Arithmetic, Shape and Measurement, and Linear Equations and their Graphs In semester two, they studied: Applications of Trigonometry, Univariate data analysis and Algebra and Matrices
The ATCNB Mathematics team would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the students on their efforts and achievements this year You have all been an absolute pleasure to teach and it has been an even greater pleasure watching you develop into complete human beings and pillars of the community
It has been a productive year for students completing their Certificate III in Business. This year the College began using the Binnacle Online Learning Management System to aid in the delivery and assessment of the qualification, with the majority of students finding this platform to be interactive and engaging
The Year 11 cohort commenced this year with students learning to support the personal wellbeing and organise work priorities Students also learnt essential workplace sustainability techniques and how to maintain workplace safety while using inclusive work practices
Year 12 students spent much of the year planning and preparing for the Trade Show The practical component of this, involved students working in groups to develop a product that would assist tradespeople in the workplace Students were required to create marketing material for the day and then showcase and highlight the features of their product while adhering to customer service guidelines
2022 saw the Year 11 Automotive students meet and greet a serving Prime Minister and teach him a thing or two about automotive (not welding) With the new cohort eager and enthusiastic to show Mr Morrison their newly acquired skills, representing the Trade College in a professional manner
The Year 12 students continued to develop and demonstrate their capabilities in the classroom, workshop and out on industry placement. Cementing their commitment to completing their qualification and expanding their knowledge along the way
Semester 2, saw the first rotation of our Cadet students start their automotive journey Exposing them to a variety of activities, including workshop safety to servicing brakes and tyre removal It is very rewarding to receive positive feedback from the Cadets who clearly enjoyed their experiences
Throughout this year, all cohorts of students have enjoyed practical activities that aligned with the Units of Competency including: measuring equipment, dismantle and assemble multi cylinder four stroke engines, bearings, seals and gaskets and carry out servicing operations
All of our students who have spent time in Automotive this year have developed or are developing the skills and knowledge required to secure a rewarding career in the automotive industry, and the many associated pathway options available
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the 2022 Year 12 Automotive students all the very best for their future endeavours Good Luck!
The engineering students have gained important foundation knowledge and skills over the year that will make them valuable to any employer that eventually takes them on
It has been encouraging to see the confidence the students have built throughout the year using the different disciplines of engineering including MIG and ARC welding, lathes and milling machines and even the hand tools that can seem a little scary at first
The program is very practical orientated and this made it enjoyable and easier for the students to overcome any challenge that has arisen They were required to engage in all aspects of engineering including planning project and estimating the tools and materials required During all of our work, the students need to work sustainably and think about our impact on the environment
One such project started this year was a go cart, and we look forward to seeing the finished product
We welcomed our new Cadets in the middle of the year They started well being fully engaged in the simpler skills required The have been able to complete some ‘take home’ projects including a bottle opener and a door chime The focus on safety has been a highlight of this year’s Cadets
We look forward to supporting all of our students to successfully sign up to School Based Apprenticeships To the graduating Year 12 class, a big congratulations! Your hard work and determination has paid off You are in line for a future that will be interesting to say the least Who knows where technology will be in 2, 5, 10 years What we do know is you will be there ready
Best wishes, Jo Porter
2022 has been a year of inspiration and creativity for the students in the Hairdressing, Barbing and Beauty programs
All students have been working hard to complete their studies and have gained organisational and communication skills whilst proving their ability to work in a team Students have gained knowledge in hair colouring techniques, blow drying and styling as well as tips and tricks on skincare, make up, nails, waxing and tinting
Students are obsessed with the latest beauty news and trends and enjoy researching top industry brands and products They demonstrate their ability to determine customer needs, apply their retail and customer service skills as they meet, greet and prepare clientele for recommend products and services
These girls are the cult of pretty and come to class enthusiastically with makeup, hair and nails on point! They excel in offering advice for all different skin and hair types These skills and experiences are foundations of learning to work in a salon environment and are transferrable to many other industries
All students attended industry work experience to gain an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers This experience increased everyone’s motivation to continue studying and undertake further training to explore career options
A large number of learners have been successful in gaining School Based Apprenticeships which added more flexibility and variety with a head start in their career and opportunity to earn and learn
We farewell our graduating students and wish them the very best for the future.
It has been another successful year for our construction programs here at the Trade College
Firstly, over the duration of the course in 2021/22 it was great to see so many of our Year 12 students enrolled into a Carpentry School Based Apprenticeship Leading up to this success, the students continued working through there Certificate I Construction qualification and assisted on a variety of on campus construction projects
The awning project that is “work in progress” on the entry to the trade area commenced construction by the Year 12 students Excavating holes for footings, fitting rafters, bearers as well as concrete retaining walls Students also learnt how to construct a load bearing wall with reinforcing bar and mesh and all the tools required to mix, pour and screed concrete We really enjoyed our time training our Year 12 cohort
Our Year 11 construction students have been busy working through the knowledge component of their certificate This year we have challenged our students to design and build three cubby houses, which will be donated to local early learning centres as a community based project These Cubbies included the construction of walls with window and door openings, decking floor built on bearers and Joist Walls were cladded, balustrades added to front porch, roofing rafters The students learnt what types of material can be used for structural support as well as material types suitable for inside or outside use We have also had the plumbing students fit the corrugated roof and gutters
This year we have built up our construction trailers to simulate the students working out of trade trailers This has continued the connection to on site work The students have full responsibility to maintain these trailers in good order ready for the next day ensuring test and tag and general inspections to ensure tooling is in good order
This year the Cadets program saw the construction students undertake a wide range of mini projects, equipping them with a broad base of knowledge and experience for the construction industry The Cadets students constructed wall frames, made concrete pavers, set out and dug footings, and built pine planter boxes With this experience, the students will make an educated decision when selecting their Year 11 trade pathway
Wishing you well, Greg Woodforde, Asher Elemani and Matt Cooper
It has been a pleasure to train the Cadet and Year 11 students; this has been my first year teaching these students, they are a lovely and an enthusiastic bunch of kids
I first met the cadets during the holiday Try a Trade Day program where we made fresh pasta and made a pesto and napoli sauce The students must have enjoyed themselves and learnt something as they came back to give cookery a go
The Year 11 students have completed a variety of units this year and prepared a range of different dishes using basic methods of cookery I have always thought that kitchen work is an excellent place to get to know yourself as well as working in group environment
During our time together we have made, pizza dough and pizzas, lemon meringue tarts and scones, pancakes, chocolate brownies, blue velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, chocolate chip cookies and much more
One of many highlights for me was making braised lamb to go with cucumber and mint yoghurt, fresh slaw and halloumi on homemade baguettes, which we sold in the College Café Tech The dish was a hit with the café selling out
After a delayed start to this year’s studies, the Year 12’s have risen to the occasion with all students either completing their Certificate II Electrotechnology (Career Start) or gaining a School Based Apprenticeship and in some instances both!
The students performed well in group learning activities and have enjoyed the benefits of sharing learned techniques and knowledge in both the practical and theoretical aspects of their training
Many students took the opportunity again this year to participate in the Test and Tag course to gain real world experience along with another valuable qualification for the electro technology industry
Well done to all Year 12 students!
All the best for the future!
Jim Erwin and Victor Arnet
There have been some big changes in the plumbing trade area this year Most notably a new large sandpit that cannot be missed We have also added a raised fit off area that allows us to do some underfloor drainage from those fixtures All plumbing students, both Year 11 and Year 12, have had a big part in design and building of these areas These new project have made it possible to put the practice skills they are learning into action in a real life scenario It has also allowed the students to ‘own’ and take pride in areas that others will see and benefit from for years to come.
The plumbing students also had the opportunity to work alongside the construction students on a cubby house project The opportunity to see how trades work together to bring a project to completion will be invaluable as they head out into industry
The Cadet students that started mid year and have had a good start working out where they want to head in their future Many of the projects they completed during their time in the plumbing area were ones they could take home and use This helped them to focus on the quality of their work and meant they worked hard on the skills required to complete them so they had something they, and make their families proud The Cadets were the main beneficiaries of the new sand pit, which gave them opportunity to be involved in work like conditions early in their journey It was encouraging to see how many already knew where they were heading
To the Year 11 students who have already accomplished so much, we are looking forward to assisting you secure your apprenticeship We are confident, if you keep working as you have this year you will be rewarded
To the Years 12 students that will graduate this year, it has been encouraging to see your journey from Cadet to this point We are sure you will make the most of the good start that has been a result of your choices and hard work
All the best to all our plumbing students. Jakob Mathews and Dean Wapsas
Another year of above average results has been achieved in our flagship Industry Work Experience Program Cadet, Year 11 and Year 12 students have organised and completed over 570 individual work experience phases This has contributed over 40,000 hours of no cost work trial hours to local businesses
These phases have allowed students to show potential employers what value they can add to their business and for more than 85% of our Year 12 cohort they have converted voluntary work experience to school based apprenticeships Congratulations!
Our ‘Employability Skills’ Work Experience Site Report continued to accelerate our school based apprenticeship conversion results this year The report focuses on the behaviours required in the workplace and not entry level skills
Local businesses have again been the core recipient of our students increased awareness on what the market expects and looks for in potential employees Feedback has been especially well received in relation to student’s attitude on site, demonstrating a keen interest by asking lots of relevant questions and by only using their mobile phones in breaks
The industry placement programs success is bolstered by the support of the College teachers and trade trainers Teachers and trainers also put their hand up to undertake the all important site visits These visits provide invaluable support to the student, host employer and our conversion process
The Trade College’s ability to be nimble to meet the market was again reflected in 2022 as we signed students to trades not in our usual scope of offerings One student studied Plastic Fabrication Specialising in Orthotics and Prosthetics creating artificial limbs and another studies “Security Operations” which is an Electrotechnology derivative
I would like to extend my appreciation to the entire Australian Trade College North Brisbane family To all the students for their on site work, the hundreds of businesses that have hosted our students, teachers and trainers for going the extra mile and all the parents and family members for your ongoing support to allow us to grow and nurture your children
This year saw both Year 11 and Year 12 students work towards their Short Course In Career Education which not only prepares them to work experience placements, but also gives them the skills and allows them to practice different scenarios and role plays to gain a School Based Apprenticeship
Students completed a range of different assessments including journaling about their own work experience and goal setting, verbal presentations about work related skills and attributes and written research assignments about career options and their plans for the future
Perhaps the most satisfying element of Industry Preparation is seeing students effectively use the new skills they have learned and converting their theory into practice in their industry work experience or school based apprenticeship blocks
in their are able to ned to good
At the College we prioritise our students wellbeing through inclusivity, education and connection. Over the past year students were provided with opportunities to develop supportive relationships, a sense of purpose, belonging and positive mental health and wellbeing
Our Year 11 students participated in our first ever Love Bites Program Love Bites is a respectful relationships education program for young people Our students examined, discussed and explored respectful relationships in a safe and supportive environment. The program concluded with a creative session where students used mixed media to create community campaigns
We also held our annual RUOK? Day Table Tennis Championships acknowledging and honouring the origins of RUOK? Day by starting a conversation and checking in with mates Great conversations were formed around the table tennis tables and college grounds Congratulations to our staff and student champions
Queensland Mental Health Week is a key event on the college wellbeing calendar This year staff and students were provided daily opportunities to take time for mental health through a variety of events including morning yoga, pancake breakfast, hotdogs with headspace lunch and dodge ball Connection to culture and spirit is at the core of the week with our community being immersed in a traditional First Nations cultural ceremony and performance
Melissa from You Choose Youth Road Safety presented an information session on reckless driving reminding students to ‘own the choice, own the outcome’ Students also heard from operational firefighters from Queensland Fire Emergency Services who delivered the Road Attitudes and Action Planning (RAAP) program which provide information to our students about road safety Students were empowered to make informed decisions to mitigate risks and consequences by planning ahead
Thank you for your ongoing support of our wellbeing framework and the programs that underpin it
fulfil their potential.
Leah Pollock-GrantWellbeing is a cornerstone that enables our students to
In January and February this year, we commenced our important and enjoyable work readiness experiences for the new Year 11 cohort
Our first day in January took place online due to a delay to face to face lessons The online program was facilitated by yLead Students engaged with their peers and College staff and ignited the fire and passion for enrolling at the Trade College with a series of goal setting activates The day finished with them completing their personal ECG Plan underpinning the college values of Engagement, Courage and Gratitude.
February saw student arrive at Urban Xtreme allowing students to challenge themselves physically and mentally doing parkour, trampolining, climbing, laser tag and having a go on a ninja warrior course The day was facilitated by Y Lead, who incorporated lessons on leadership, teamwork and participation throughout the activities
It was a pleasure to see so many students step up the challenges that faced them and really put themselves out of their comfort zone These social opportunities really help students to build the strong bonds of friendship with both other students and teachers who also took part with them
I hope that students can readily transfer the skills learned on these experiences into their working lives and beyond
