Socio Economic Impact of KSWL in Rwanda Employment

Sugar Production: With a daily cane crushing capacity of 600MT and an annual capacity of 17,000MT, KSWL is the only producer of sugar in Rwanda.Most of the river banks of the Nyabarongo, Nyabugogo, and Akagera Marshlands are used for sugarcane cultivation.

Kabuye sugar works provides direct and indirect employments circa to 10000 families which includes, farmers, transporters, contractors, Harvesting workers, sugar factory employees, workers employed by the farmers for their cane development.

Out-growers Scheme for Small-Holding Farmers:

KSWL has over 3,500 small holders (both individuals and Associations/Cooperatives) who are directly involved in sugarcane cultivation and have benefited from the revenues generated from sugarcane farming.

Even after spending huge amount in water management “Year after year, these marshlands have seen severe flooding. KSWL Invest huge amount in crop development and finally the crops get perishes in floods. Kabuye produced 11,000 tonnes in 2022 – about 65 per cent of its annual production capacity of 17,000 tonnes – as floods destroyed some 35% per cent of its total sugarcane plantations.

Challenges •

The Kabuye Estate and Outgrowers’ Fields are affected by frequent flooding of the rivers Nyabarongo, Akanyaru, and Akagera, which causes cane fields to be submerged and severely reduced crop yields.

•

There aren’t enough appropriate highlands available for growing sugarcane.

•

Poor cane yields, low sugar recoveries, crop perishability, inadequate road systems, and high transportation costs all contribute to the high cost of sugar production.

•

The extended water stagnation for a period of 60 to 75 days during flooding has been one of the main factors contributing to the low cane productivity.

This project, known as “Isukari: Imvugo Tuyigir,” will take place from 2013 to 2018.

President Paul Kagame discusses migration deal and trade with British PM

wanda and the United Kingdom are leading the way on global migration challenges, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said during a meeting with President Paul Kagame.

President Kagame and the First Lady Jeannette Kagame, was in London, UK, for King Charles III’s coronation that was slated for May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London. The King was crowned alongside Queen Consort, Camilla.

In London, President Kagame also met with the President of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, for discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas to further social-economic development.

Kagame’s discussion with the UK Prime Minister is part of a series of meetings the Head of State is expected to host during his visit to London.

President Kagame, who is Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth, met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland ahead of the Commonwealth Leaders Meeting.

President Kagame met with U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak at 10 Downing Street for a meeting during which they discussed various topics, including the ongoing Migration and Economic Development Partnership, global events as well as further opportunities for bilateral collaboration to increase trade and investment,” a statement from the Office of the President reads in part.

Local media reports indicate that, while at 10 Downing Street, both leaders reiterated their commitment to pursuing the partnership between the two countries that will have asylum seekers relocated to Rwanda, as a measure to deter illegal immigration and criminal activities around it.

As the current Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth, Kagame will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Leaders’ Meeting scheduled for May 2023.

King Charles III, who also serves as the Head of the Commonwealth, will also attend the meeting.

On the same day, First Lady Jeannette Kagame will take part in the fireside chat titled ‘Inspiring Change: Together for the elimination of cervical cancer in the Commonwealth’, as part of the Commonwealth spouses and partners programme. newtimes.co.rw

Gerard Sina is commonly wellknown as Rwanda’s foremost agribusiness entrepreneur. His interests are diverse spanning restaurants, bakeries, a juice and wine factory, a school and extensive land holdings.

Practically starting with nothing,Sina’s rise to the top is a basically because his business is orientedtowards agro-processing.

The company he started, EnterpriseUrwibutso is located about 45kms north of Kigali City at Nyirangarama in Rulindo District, Northern Province. For those travelling, a stop at Nyirangarama is a must because of delicious and freshly goodies.

Sina’s moving story is the best example that Made in Rwanda has many opportunities particularly Rwanda’s agri-business sector.

“My enterprise is agri-business based; we use technology to add value to our products, for instance, we use innovation and technology make juice out of pineapples, carrots and bananas,” he explains.

“I started with a small bakery in 1983. My parents were farmers and I baked products

from the farm,” Sina recalls. Once Sina’s compa- ny was placed on a sound footing, he diversified his portfolio by adding value to his products like; bread, ice cream, tomato ketchup, honey, biscuits, Akandi mineral water, natural jam pastry and flours from soya, maize to mention but a few “The company production philosophy is premised on delivering the best products that can match the standards in some of the most sophisticated markets; the reason is because they are exported to other countries around East Africa and Europe,” he underlined.

Enterprise Urwibutso started producing doughnuts from flour as the first product and others followed.

“Agashya” is per-

haps the best known amongst the family of drinks by the entrepreneur and among the first locally produced quality fruit juice drink while the “Akabanga” hot sauce is a very popular item sold into foreign markets.

The latest product brought on market by Enterprise Urwibutso is mayonnaise which is called “AKA Mayonnaise” “My products become popular and that enabled my businesses to grow”, he says, one of the reasons is because of good leadership and deep reforms from the government which has provided opportunities to boost Made in Rwanda products and eased exportation.

The Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), agricultural experts and consultants have credited his products like bread, juices and ice cream as well as crisps as biofortified food crops with highly nutritious values for feeding children in order to fight chronic malnutrition especially stunting.

Sina has business acumen and is visionary, one way of ascertaining such a claim is his firm belief in what education can do to the sustainability of his rapidly growing business.

If your goal is fat loss or muscle gain, running for miles and miles may not be the best way to lose pounds. The more efficient your body becomes at running, the fewer calories you’ll burn.

.MYTH BIG MUSCLES ARE STRONG MUSCLES TRUTH: There’s a difference

between training your muscles to be big and training your muscles to be strong. For physique athletes, size and shape—not strength—is the ultimate goal. For athletes, strength for maximum effort is most important.

I’m not saying that big muscles aren’t strong, but put a bodybuilder and an Olympic lifter in front of a loaded barbell and see who can clean the most weight. Either person is capable of being strong or built—it’s all a matter of training for a specific goal.
