G20: President PAUL Kagame Rallies

World To Commit To $100bn ‘Green Fund’

For Developing Countries

President Paul Kagame has called on wealthy countries at the G20 Summit in Rome, Italy, to commit to a $100 billion proposed fund that would help developing countries to develop in a green way and cope with the impact of climate change and COVID-19.

The Head of State made the call during a working session of the G20 RomeSummit on Climate Change and Environment just at the same time the COP26 Climate Change Summit was ongoing in Glasgow, Scotland.

President Kagame said that with the outcome of COP-26 still in the balance, the conversation was timely, particularly regarding financing of development in least countries, which he described as ‘the elephant in the room’. “The commitment to mobilize $100 billion a year for green transition in developing countries has not fully materialized, and there is no tangible action in this direction. This year’s G20 is an opportunity to recall that pledge. We need a delivery plan,” President Kagame told world leaders.

“The world’s largest economies contribute almost 80% of worldwide emissions. Africa is not the main cause of climate change, but we can and must be part of the solution, and we intend to do just that,” he added.

President Kagame said that in July 2021, a new five-year African Union Green Recovery Action Plan was launched, with renewable energy, biodiversity, and climate finance as its pillars.

“There is a need to revise the Nationally Determined Contributions to match this level of ambition. In Rwanda, we have put a National Cooling Strategy in place to phase out the hydrofluorocarbons that contribute so much to global warming,”

“This action is in line with the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Fully implementing this agreement is one of the most consequential actions that we can take to slow the pace of climate change. I hope that the urgency of the climate emergency will guide the discussions at COP-26, starting tomorrow,” President Kagame said.

Speaking at a press conference in Rome, Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, said that G20 countries have agreed to “continue the commitment to fight climate change for the benefit of current and future generations”.

PM Draghi noted that the world’s largest economies agreed at the summit in Rome being held before they go to COP26 to “keep the 1.5C target within reach with a series of immediate actions and medium-term commitments”.

They include an international public commitment to eliminate finance for new unabated coal by 2021 while all G20 countries committed to net zero emissions by mid-century. He also added that G20 countries were moving “much closer” to the goal of reaching the $100bn in climate finance to support vulnerable countries.

Lionel Messi has won the men’s Ballon d’Or for a record seventh time.

Messi, who left Barcelona as a free agent to sign for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, was presented with the award for best men’s footballer in the world on Monday night in Paris after another record-breaking 12 months for club and country. He saw off competition from Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

“I’m really proud to win the France Football Ballon d’Or once again,” said Messi. “It’s incredible to win it for the seventh time. I would like to thank my family, my friends and all the people who follow me and always support me, because without them I couldn’t have done it”.

Messi, who wore a sparkly dinner jacket at the ceremony in Paris, collected the honour for a record sixth time in 2019 - one ahead of great rival Cristiano Ronaldo - before the awards were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Robert Lewandowski has lifted the Bundesliga and Club World Cup in 2021

Poland international Lewandowski, 33, who was widely expected to win last year, finished second after scoring 38 goals in 30 league games for Bayern in 2021.

Jorginho was key to Chelsea’s Champions League win as well as Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph

Meanwhile, Jorginho finished third after a standout year in which he helped Italy to glory at the delayed Euro 2020 after lifting the Champions League trophy with Chelsea in May.

Chelsea also won the club of the year award for having most players nominated across all of the categories.

His interests are diverse spanning restaurants, bakeries, a juice and wine factory, a school and extensive land holdings. Practically starting with nothing,Sina’s rise to the top is a basically because his business is orientedtowards agro-processing.

The company he started, EnterpriseUrwibutso is located about 45kms north of Kigali City at Nyirangarama in Rulindo District, Northern Province. For those travelling, a stop at Nyirangarama is a must because of delicious and freshly goodies.

Sina’s moving story is the best example that Made in Rwanda has many opportunities particularly Rwanda’s agri-business sector.

“My enterprise is agri-business based; we use technology to add value to our products, for instance, we use innovation and technology make juice out of pineapples, carrots and bananas,” he explains.

“I started small bak 1983. My parents were farm ers and I baked products

from the farm,” Sina recalls. Once Sina’s compa- ny was placed on a sound footing, he diversified his portfo- lio by adding value to his products like; bread, ice cream, tomato ketchup, honey,

biscuits, Akandi mineral water, natural jam pastry and flours from soya, maize to mention but a few “The company production philosophy is premised on delivering the best products that can match the standards in some of the most sophisticated markets; the reason is because they are exported to other countries around East Africa and Europe,” he underlined.

Enterprise Urwibutso started producing doughnuts from flour as the first product and others followed.

“Agashya” is per-

haps the best known amongst the family of drinks by the entrepreneur and among the first locally produced quality fruit juice drink while the “Akabanga” hot sauce is a very popular item sold into foreign markets.

The latest product brought on market by Enterprise Urwibutso is

The Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), agricultural experts and consultants have credited his products like bread, juices and ice cream as well as crisps as biofortified food crops with highly nutritious values for feeding children in order to fight chronic malnutrition especially stunting. NIRDA’s quest to boosts garment industry performance, other locally made products

When she first heard about the National Industrial Research and Development Agency (NIRDA)’s Open Calls Program to help garment industries acquire upgraded equipment through a competition, Joy Kasangire never hesitated to join.

She owns Promota Creations garment factory based in Kigali, specializing in

production of casual t-shirt and shirts. For years, Kasangire’s wish was to own more machines but due to limited capacity she only produced on orders.

Faced with such constraints, the launch of NIRDA’s Open Calls program two years ago came in handy for Kasangire.

The program’s objective is to support selected small and medium industries in a given value chain to acquire modern equipment to improve competitiveness and productivity. Such support is also meant to build the capacity of local producers to satisfy local market, increase exports while creating more decent and productive jobs.

NIRDA’s Open Calls program pack-

age also includes technical support, business management training and business advisory services to beneficiaries among others.

The inaugural Open Calls initiative targeted garment and banana wine processing value chains, where six industries in each benefitted.

Other beneficiary companies in garment include African Sewing Club, Weya Creations, New Kigali designers and Outfitters Ltd, Gahaya Links Ltd and Ambara Uberwe Nawe cooperative located in Rusizi district.

Some companies received heavy and automated specialized machines used to perform specific tasks such as embroidery, collar and pockets unfolding, fusing machines, cutting machines

and others generally used in sewing. The equipment were provided in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Rwanda and The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

Kasangire, like other beneficiaries describe the support as a boost to the garment industry.

Responding to COVID-19

In responding to the current health needs, the garment industry in the country embarked on mass production of face masks.

“During the COVID-19, we turned focus on facemask to help prevent the spread of the virus. With newly acquired machines we increased our production capacity to 6,000 facemasks per day,” Kasangire says.

Other factories such as Kigali Sewing Clubs produce over 10,000 facemasks while Weya Creations produces between 4,000 and 5,000.

Post COVID-19 production

Kasangire received two heavy automated machines that fold collars of shirts and perform other finishing tasks.

She also received over 50 modern sewing machines believed to be faster and more efficient.

“After the COVID-19 our plan is to launch mass production of shirts and t-shirts,a shift from producing on orders,” she notes.

Her factory produces 500 shirts and 1000 t-shirts daily.

She plans to work with distributors across the country to expand the reach of her products.

“We are thankful to NIRDA and its partners for the support as it increased our capacity. Our goal of further expansion is within reach which would increase workers from 30 to 100.”

Aurore Kayitesi, the owner of Weya Creations said is now able to produce between 4000 and 5000 facemasks. The target is to produce 1000 undergarments, 100 jeans, 100 shirts

Andrew Kanyonya, the owner New Kigali designers and Outfitters Ltd, said the support was timely intervention needed to improve the sector performance.

Kanyonya, expects booming business in the garment sector once the economy recovers from the impact of the pandemic.

“The support was rightly channeled based on NIRDA’s needs assessment,” Kanyonya said.

“We look forward to partnering with UNIDO and NIRDA to scale up production and improve lives of people in the industrial sector.”

Kanyonya noted there is improvement in their delivery speed, quality of products as well as business operation, attributable to NIRDA support.

“You are able to deliver quality products on time which guarantees customer satisfaction. The garment products could soon hit regional market should things return to normal,” he said.

“With the new machines we hope to increase our production capacity by 30 per cent which would in turn create jobs by the same percentage,” he added.

According to Dr. Christian SEKOMO BIRAMEM, NIRDA’s Director General underlined the need to support small and medium industries as per NIRDA’s mandate.

He also urged the beneficiaries to put the acquired equipment to good use in order to create more jobs.

“We chose to support industries through Open Calls program in order

SEKOMO

to encourage competitiveness and production of quality products for both local and international market,” he said.

Apart from garment sector, NIRDA also supported six firms in Banana wine production through the Open Calls Program.

He, however, said that much as garment and banana wine received the equipment as non-repayable facility, NIRDA has since changed the approach.

Under the new criteria, beneficiary companies will be supported to acquire new equipment on free-interest credit but without the need for collateral.

NIRDA is currently partnering with Development Bank of Rwanda (BRD) to support industries in the Open Calls program.

NIRDA currently works with firms involved in fruits and vegetable’s value chain, wood processing value chain and cow in the car value chain.

NIRDA is also implementing other value chains to help more companies acquire upgraded equipment and boost locally made products. They include wood processing value chain, Fruits and Vegetables Value chain, Cow in the Car value chain.

Others include piggery value chain, Poultry Value chain, stone value chain and clay value chain.

NIRDA believes that equipping industries with upgraded equipment will boost industries hence increasing locally made products for both local and international market.

PROMOTING RWANDA’S SPECIALITY COFFEE BASED ON INNOVATION AND ADDITION VALUE

To promote speciality coffee six farmer cooperatives in 2005 formed the Rwanda Small Holder Specialty Coffee Company (RWASHOSCCO Ltd) that would help improve the value chain and market Rwanda’s speciality coffee on the international market. The farmer-owned coffee roasting, marketing and export company was charged with providing key services to the six (6)cooperatives which are spread across the country that include;Abahuzamugambi ba Kawa/Maraba (Huye), BUFCOFFEE(Nyamagabe), COCAGI Gashonga (Rusizi), COCAHU Humure

(Eastern Province), Dukundekawa Musasa (Northern Province) and KOAKAKA (Nyamagabe and Huye).

The company was created towards the end of a USAID funded project that aimed at aiding local coffee producers to process and setup coffee washing stations. Although the project helped in bringing together farmers into the cooperatives it lacked sustainability due to cooperatives total dependency on grants, yet coffee was fetching good revenues for the farmers.

observes that her company helps the cooperatives to market, advertise and take coffee to international markets. This ensures that the cooperatives can harvest, process and add value to deliver a final product to the market.

The company does not buy coffee from member cooperatives to re-sell but links cooperatives to foreign roasters or buyers. As a company, its fully owned by cooperatives which pays a fee per kilogramme of coffee that passes through the company to cover its operating costs.

Angelique’s Finest – 100% made by women of Rwanda

The Brand ‘Café de Maraba’

The brand name originates from Maraba in the southern Rwanda, the area that first owned a washing station which also attracted other coffee farmers to visit and train in coffee processing. As the first speciality producers of coffee and among the founders of RWASHOSCCO, the brand Café de Maraba’ was selected to market the company’s products.

The Managing Director of the company explains that Maraba coffee was marketed internationally to show the speciality coffee produced in Rwanda, this encouraged the adoption of its popular name on the international coffee market.

RWASHOSCCO specializes in high quality specialty coffee and this is achieved by empowering farmers with trainings, improving the processes and provides special care to the whole coffee quality control system. “Quality is our primary focus, we only take up coffee graded above 84%, so we ensure that farmersare given the essentials to deliver coffee that has quality,” emphasises Karekezi. Value addition

Angelique’s Finest is a Rwandan specialty coffee brand based on storytelling and produced entirely by women of Rwanda, from the farm to roasting and packaging. It is undoubtedly good, because:

(1) By being roasted in the country of production, a significant greater part of the value addition remains to the producers.

(2) The economic situation and financial independence of the women producer is improved.

(3) Angelique’s Finest is certified by Fairtrade International.

Angelique Karekezi, the Managing Director of RWASHOSCCO observes that her company helps the cooperatives to market, advertise and take coffee to international markets.

(4) Rebranding Rwashoscco’s name in the international market as well as increasing the market for our cooperatives and preserve the sustainability of the company.

We have a new partnership with German social business start-up Kaffee-Kooperative.de. Whereby we send green coffee in German to be processed and packaged there as the final product with the purpose of increasing the quantity supply in German and other market in large, All profits from the sale are being returned to the cooperative to support independence and participation by women and their families.

blockchain solution enables digital traceability for coffee grown by women Since 2020, INA in Rwanda has been digitalising the supply chain of a speciality coffee that is cultivated solely by Rwandan women. These women have been producing their coffee for the German market for a long time, and yet consumers in Germany know hardly anything about the origins of the hot drink they enjoy every day. The global supply chains are usually not transparent, and the end product on the supermarket shelves tells consumers very little about the social, economic and environmental conditions in the country where the coffee is grown. INA is aiming to change this with the aid of blockchain technology. For the implementation on the ground, INA partnered with the International Women’s Coffee Alliance, Rwanda Chapter.

Coffee is one of Rwanda’s main exports, and large quantities of it are sold to Germany. However, the coffee price is permanently low on the world market and subject to major fluctuations. Poor returns, high production costs and depressed prices mean that smallholder families struggle to make a living from coffee farming. Women are particularly affected by this. They carry out the bulk of the work in the coffee farming sector

Therefore, to solve this issue, each female coffee farmer is given a digital ID with information on the production location of the coffee. This allows consumers to clearly see where their coffee comes from. The digital ID also enables further information to be accumulated on the blockchain, such as quantity, sale date and purchase price. Each

additional transaction along the supply chain – such as when and where the coffee cherries are roasted – is also registered and documented in the system. This means everyone involved in the supply chain can access and publicise the relevant information on origin, quality, production processes, certificates and prices paid. In turn, the end consumers in

the supermarket can view this information on their smartphones by scanning a QR code on the product packaging. This system is great, it helps us to know all the information, a crucial element of sustainable supply chains is fair remuneration for the mostly small-scale farmers at the start of the supply chain. The aim of the INA project is to include the female producers in value creation as fair and equal partners.

At the same time, the digital solution creates a basis for other services, such as financial products, which benefit the smallholder families. The women in Rwanda can decide for themselves where their coffee cherries are roasted. As a result, the project not only enhances women’s financial independence but also strengthens their decision-making power.
