Foreword

T

o enhance Rwanda’s economic competitiveness the government of Rwanda launched Made in Rwanda, a campaign in its brief history that has already been touted as having made a great impact on the country’s economic growth.

Announced in December 2014, the campaign has made tangible progress when you look at the products that are now produced in the country’s industrial sector. Rwandans themselves (80%) say Made in Rwanda campaign has influenced their perception of locally made produce, this is according to information from the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The effectiveness of this campaign can also be seen on the focus which is not only targeting consumers but also producers, especially small and medium enterprises, a category where 98% of Rwandan firms fall.

The use of technology and innovation to boost local production has become a fulcrum of this campaign. This move has ensured enhancement of quality, standards, branding and packaging along the value chain.

Made in Rwanda which began as a campaign to increase awareness of the

benefits of buying Rwandan made products turned into an all-inclusive term for interventions that influence economic competitiveness.

Here the engagement of both public and private institutions in developing domestic markets is improving the lives of many Rwandans who are getting some of these quality products easily while reducing the country’s trade deficit.

Locally made products are growing each day, jobs are created and exports boosted while reducing trade imbalance. This has been achieved because more and more hitherto imported products are now produced locally and even exported to foreign markets now.

The Rwandan government continues to play a central role in all these developments, encouraging more investments with the gradual dissuasion and policies that will stop imports like second hand products which will ultimately boost local production in the long run.

The political will to advance locally manufactured products will ensure quality and sustainable products but government needs to do more in engaging the private sector and investors on how to better the strategies and policy issues that can deter progress.

Nestled in the Southern Province of Rwanda, Kinazi Cassava Plant (KCP) has steadily risen to become a major player in the global cassava processing industry.

Established in 2012, KCP was a government-led initiative aimed at adding value to Rwanda’s cassava crop, a staple for many rural farmers. The plant, with a daily production capacity of 30 tons of cassava flour, now impacts over 2,000 farmers by providing a stable market for their produce, significantly boosting their incomes.

A Commitment to Quality KCP prides itself on producing high-quality cassava flour that meets international standards, which has allowed it to expand its market reach beyond Africa into Europe, the United States, and Australia. With a strong commitment to quality control, the plant ensures that cassava from local farmers is processed within 8 hours of harvest, maintaining its freshness and nutritional value.

This meticulous process has earned KCP international accreditations, including the US FDA approval and certifications from Rwanda Standards Board and HACCP. 14 | INTITI MAGAZINE - SPECIAL EDITION

Planting - Production - Distribution Driving Economic Transformation Beyond processing, KCP has been instrumental in transforming the livelihoods of farmers and the local community. By sourcing raw materials from over 16 cooperatives and 50 individual farmers, the plant fosters rural economic development. It also provides employment for over 300 casual workers and 30 permanent staff, with many residing near the plant. Additionally, infrastructure improvements, such as enhanced road networks and access to water and electricity, have benefited the surrounding communities.

Resilience and Innovation The journey has not been without challenges.

A cassava disease outbreak in 2014 severely impacted production, forcing KCP to source raw materials from neighboring countries like Tanzania. However, government interventions, including the introduction of disease-resistant cassava varieties, have restored local supply since 2018. In recent years, the plant has invested in upgrading its machinery and improving operational efficiency, resulting in increased production and profitability.

Future Ambitions Looking ahead, KCP plans to expand its production capacity and explore new product lines, including cassava-based confectioneries like

bread, cakes, and chapati. By continuously improving its products and processes, the plant aims to meet the growing demand from international markets. With ongoing research into fortified cassava flour and other innovations, KCP is set to become a one-stop center for cassava-based products.

Sustainability and Impact KCP’s sustainability efforts extend beyond production. The company’s collaborations with cooperatives have allowed farmers to access financial services and loans, further empowering them economically. The plant also promotes eco-friendly practices, ensuring that cassava waste is repurposed into animal feeds, reducing waste and creating additional revenue streams.
