s Directors of International Solidarity for Human Rights we have decided to reaffirm our faith in the fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and to promote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights everywhere, every day.

The Universal Declaration for Human Rights has great moral force, and it shows the rights that are basic for individual human beings to have. Without them, we feel that the full development of individual personality is impossible. Basic human rights are simple and easily understood: freedom of speech and a free press; freedom of religion and worship; freedom of assembly and the right of petition; the right of men to be secure in their homes and free from unreasonable search and seizure and from arbitrary arrest and punishment.

In a truest sense, human rights are a fundamental object of law and government in a just society.

Human rights exist to the degree that they are respected by people in relations with each other and by governments in relations with their citizens.

It is our hope that despite the wide differences in approach we face in the world today, we can with good faith in the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, arrive at a common basis of understanding and peace.

“Freedom, Equality, Justice and Peace”

A

t an early age, children are taught the interactive song, and quirky game, “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” to learn about the human body and build essential motor skills. It’s time to arm the youth with another set of tools essential to their development; their human rights. Perhaps through a song or a game, learning about the equipment

that protects us from discrimination, inequality and slavery is just as important as learning about the human body, for both are inherent and inalienable.

Let’s introduce a new song, “Freedom, Equality, Justice and Peace” to learn about The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This document, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, sets out the fundamental human rights to be protected universally. The recognition of the inherent, equal, inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.

The UDHR is made up of thirty articles that embody the rights inherent to all human beings regardless of place of residence, nationality, sex, ethnicity, color, status or religion. These thirty articles dictate the rights that are indivisible, universal, equal, nondiscriminatory and interdependent. Yet, just as the

development of a child is dependent on more than just an interactive song or game, the realization and protection of these rights depend on constant teaching and education. These rights must be observed and recognized by all, for all. It begins like a catchy song with a clear message. Sing, read, rap, dance, and speak carrying the powerful message that human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights endowed with reason and conscience to act in a spirit of brotherhood.

Just as a child must build interdependent motor skills to be able to perform complex nerve and muscle acts to produce movement, one must build ones ability to perform using the interdependent rights we inherently have. For like all the nerves and muscles in the body these human rights are all dependent on each other. The improvement of one right will facilitate the advancement of the others. Similarly, the deprivation of one right will adversely affect another.

El “Camino de Santiago”, en España, es uno de los más enriquecedores acontecimientos espirituales, religiosos, culturales y turísticos que una persona puede experimentar. Es una de esas travesías que se deben hacer, por lo menos, una vez en la vida

n el año 2010 se estrenó la película The Way basada en el Camino de Santiago y protagonizada por Martin Sheen. Mucho tiempo antes sabíamos del Camino, de la mano del escritor brasilero Paulo Coelho, quien había regalado a sus lectores experiencias sobre su propio peregrinaje.

No hay persona, que al saber de la existencia de esta ruta, no desee, alguna vez, transitar una de sus múltiples sendas: el Camino Francés, el Camino del Norte, el Camino Portugués, o el Camino de la Plata, entre otros.

Todos estos senderos conducen a la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, en Galicia, donde se encuentran los restos de Santiago Apóstol.

Personalmente quería conocer el Camino Primitivo, el camino original, el que es patrimonio de la humanidad. Es el camino más difícil por su geografía y el menos transitado, un camino donde la experiencia personal se convierte en un cambio de perspectiva con respecto a la vida. El que va al Camino de Santiago no regresa igual y siempre querrá volver a él.

Prepararnos física y mentalmente es necesario. La planificación es imprescindible para evitar contratiempos. La seguridad en el camino es de admirar; durante mi aventura caminé sola y a ratos también acompañada, y jamás me sentí en peligro. Es uno de los lugares del planeta donde mejor puedes experimentar la sensación de libertad.

Viajé auspiciada por la Oficina de Turismo de España e Iberia, para realizar un proyecto de derechos humanos en las escuelas del Camino Primitivo y pude hacer realidad un sueño aplazado durante cinco años. Es auténticamente cierto que “El Camino te llama” y el camino es el que decide cuándo lo harás.

Llegué a Madrid procedente de Miami y enlacé con un vuelo interno directo a la capital de Asturias, Oviedo.

PRIMER PASO En Oviedo inicia el camino primitivo. Cada quien marca su tiempo y su ruta. En mi caso, la peregrinación duró 15 días, recorriendo más de 300 kilómetros a pie por el interior de verdes y empinadas montañas, y de extensos campos y praderas hasta llegar a Santiago de Compostela. o menos 20 kilómetros cada una.

Oviedo es una de las ciudades que representa un centro de peregrinaje desde la Edad Media. Con su oferta cultural es una bellísima ciudad moderna con instalaciones hoteleras y de restauración de alta calidad y una gastronomía de gran prestigio. Un cantar reza: “Quien va a Santiago y no a el Salvador, visita al criado y deja al señor”.

De allí que la mayoría de los caminos tengan un desvío para visitar la Catedral de San Salvador, que posee una Cámara Santa. Dicen que allí se encuentra el Santo Sudario.

Después de escuchar la misa de la perdonanza, partí a mi aventura. Empecé a caminar hacia las afueras de la ciudad buscando las flechas amarillas que indican el camino.

Adentrándome en el Camino, transité por un entorno rural donde me saludaban las caras sonrientes de los lugareños acostumbrados a recibir y a guiar a los peregrinos.

PUEBLITOS ASTURIANOS Llegamos a Grado, que es el siguiente ayuntamiento. Entré por el puente y la iglesia románica de Peñaflor. Grado es un lugar donde convergen diferentes rutas históricas. Es muy famoso por sus mercados semanales que se celebran los miércoles y los domingos. Otros atractivos son su casco antiguo, la arquitectura indiana y sus productos gastronómicos como El Tocinillo del Cielo, un postre que es de obligación degustar aquí.

El próximo encuentro es con Salas, donde nos detuvimos en la localidad de Cornellana. Luego caminamos directo al corazón de la ciudad, donde visité su hermoso casco histórico y pudimos pernoctar esa noche en un auténtico recinto medieval, el “Castillo Valdés Salas”. Las calles y el entorno de esta población nos fascinó.

exuberante naturaleza. Lo siguiente que nos topamos fue Pola de Allande, donde es obligación visitar el Monasterio de Santa María Real de Obona.

La próxima estación me llevó hasta Grandas de Salime, donde nos impactó la majestuosidad del embalse de Grandas. Desde aquí ascendí hasta el puerto del Acebo en la provincia de Lugo, que me recibió imponentemente con una ciudad amurallada que me transportó a la época de los romanos y a las maravillas arquitectónicas que aportaron al mundo. La muralla de Lugo es patrimonio UNESCO de la humanidad.

NOS RECIBE GALICIA Termine mí recorrido a través del Camino Primitivo con las tres siguientes etapas Gallegas que corren entre verdores extraordinarios y que me llevaron al destino final: La Catedral de Santiago de Compostela.

Dentro de la Catedral tuve la gran dicha de abrazar la figura del Apóstol Santiago y después de la misa ver la puesta en escena del Botafumeiro. El Botafumeiro (“incensario” en gallego) es uno de los símbolos más famosos y populares de la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela. Es un incensario de grandes dimensiones que se mueve des-

de la cúpula central de la Catedral, desde donde cuelga por un sistema de poleas, hacia las naves laterales. Ocho hombres son necesarios para moverlo, los conocidos “tiraboleiros”, ya que pesa 53 kg. y mide 1,50 metros. Está suspendido a una altura de 20 metros y puede alcanzar una gran velocidad. Observarlo balancearse por sobre mi cabeza fue indescriptible.

Toda experiencia del Camino es alucinante y lo que les diga en estas líneas no podrá nunca describir lo que se vive. Aprendemos que hay que andar ligero de equipaje, sin el bagaje de un peso que no nos deja avanzar. Durante todo el recorrido, aprendí que tienes que estar atento a las señales; ellas te indican cuál es el camino correcto, y si te pierdes, no temas, habrá gente o códigos que deberás descifrar tú mismo para encontrar de nuevo el sendero que te llevará a la siguiente estación.

El camino Primitivo a Santiago de Compostela es como la vida misma, lleno de obstáculos, subidas, bajadas, preciosos paisajes y grandes desafíos, pero al final, no podrás más que regocijarte en el recuerdo de una vivencia única.

The Primitive Way begins in Asturias

had the grandiose opportunity to walk The Way of Saint James, the most famous pilgrim walk, in Spain and I encourage anyone to walk the Way of Saint James, through The Primitive Way. The people, the landscape, the cities, the contact with nature, make of this walk, the most spiritual, relaxing, demanding,

extraordinary experience a human being can undergo.

The first recorded pilgrimage was undertaken by the Asturian King Alfonso II, called Alfonso the Chaste as early as in the 9th century. The Camino starts at the Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo; it is an essential stopping point when doing the

way of Saint James.

You leave Oviedo and the landscape changes from urban to rural.

The next stage brings you to the town of Grado; you will visit its traditional market which has been running since medieval times.

Next station is the medieval town of Salas where you will find the stunning castle and tower of Valdes. The surrounding area of Salas is made up of valleys and rolling hills making the area ideal for hiking.

We continue to the town of Tineo with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains; you have to sample the famous cold meats from the area of Chosco.

The pilgrimage takes you to Pola de Allande stopping at the Monastery of Santa Maria la Real de Obona. This is a good place to rest a while. The city is famous for heartwarming casseroles and cured meats.

The journey takes you to the mountain village of Grandas de Salime and its dramatic view of the Grandas dam and reservoir and the most impressive Ethnographic museums.

From here you bid farewell to Asturias descending into the province of Lugo in Galicia as you continue towards the magnificent Santiago de Compostela, the resting place of Saint James. Here you will be marveled by the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela the final visit of a journey that will never be forgotten: The Way of Saint James‌‌

Human Rights Class in a Box International Solidarity for Human Rights

D

uring their walk through the Primitive Way of Saint James, in Spain, ISHR’s Directors Elizabeth Sanchez and Devorah Sasha, combined their pilgrimage with visits to 5 schools in Asturias where they imparted their program “Human Rights Class in a Box”, aimed at educating the children about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30 human rights that belong to everyone since birth; ISHR’s Directors also gave the children a fully illustrated book “The Pocket Guide to Human Rights” in English and Spanish. At the end of the program, the children were given the opportunity to express their testimonials and opinions in video, drawings, phrases, paintings and stories.

ISHR’s Directors appointed the children as ISHR’s Universal Ambassadors for the organization.

Human Rights Class in a Box will be a recurring program for elementary school children in Asturias, since ISHR plans to travel every year to Spain to impart education about Human Rights in The Way of Saint James…..

The birth of Philanthropic-Capitalism

T

he need for philanthropy to become more like the forprofit capital markets is a common theme among the new philanthropists, especially those who have made their fortune in finance. As they see it, three things are needed for such a philanthropic marketplace to work.

First, there must be something for philanthropists to “invest” in—something that, ideally, will be created by “social entrepreneurs”, just as in the for-profit world entrepreneurs create companies that end up traded on the stock market.

Second, the market requires an infrastructure, the philanthropic equivalent of stock markets, investment banks, research houses, management consultants and so on.

Third, philanthropists themselves need to behave more like investors. That means allocating their money to make the greatest possible difference to society’s problems: in other words, to maximize their “social return”. Some might operate as relatively hands-off, diversified “social investors” and some as hands-on, engaged “venture philanthropists”, the counterparts of mainstream venture capitalists.

The new philanthropists are mostly young enough to be able to keep an eye on their investment for many years to come.

The new philanthropists also need to be clear what they want to do, and stick with it. Some foundations are now exploring new ways of funding organizations, they should start to behave more like philanthropic banks, offering a range of financial products such as loans and loan guarantees as well as grants.

Some philanthropists are also beginning to think about how best to harness all their assets to the causes they support, rather than just concentrating on the money they are currently giving away.

The phrase most often used to describe the new approach to giving is “venture philanthropy”. Perhaps the best example is a firm called Venture Philanthropy Partners. Run by Mario Morino, who made his fortune in software, it specializes in mid-sized non-profit organizations in the Washington, DC, area that work well enough, but lack the capital and talent to expand. With a $30m fund raised through a community foundation, Mr. Morino behaves much like a venture capitalist. He is working intensively with 12 non-profit organizations, helping them to develop a business plan for growth and to recruit managers and board members.

Donors also need to strike the right balance, so that on one hand they ask for enough information to be able to monitor the effectiveness of the organizations they fund but on the other they do not bog them down in form-filling bureaucracy. The Gates Foundation has a good reputation for getting the mix right and tailoring it to individual circumstances.

In the world of social value-creation, context is king. Give no matter what, be the new Philanthropy Capitalist.
