› GRÜNER SALON › WED 16.11. › 10:00 H
Casting aside sequential models with checklists based on elements of plot structure, Raskin considers short film development from a non-formulaic standpoint. Richard Raskin, Denmark/USA, Professor of Short Film, author and filmmaker. LUMINOUS ANIMATIONS
JUAN PABLO ZARAMELLA ON CREATIVE PROCESSES IN STOP MOTION ANIMATION
› GRÜNER SALON › WED 16.11. › 18:00 H
From comic strip to the quasi-live action film, stop motion plays with existing realities or creates entirely new worlds. The immensely labour-intensive task of single-frame animation makes the short film attractive for this technique. Making use of selected short films and clips from his comprehensive filmography, Juan Pablo Zaramella describes the creative process of animated filmmaking. Juan Pablo Zaramella from Buenos Aires, Argentina is an animation filmmaker working in short film, television, and advertising. His pixilation film “Luminaris” (2011) received 326 awards worldwide, more than any other short film. Regardless of the chosen medium, whether drawn, modelled or shot in live action – Zaramella loves playing with formats.

IRTUAL REALITY: A NEW V SHORT FILM FORMAT?
PIERRE ZANDROWICZ ON THE CHALLENGES OF SCRIPTWRITING AND DRAMATURGY IN VR
› GRÜNER SALON › THU 17.11. › 10:00 H
Virtual reality is a field of play for both film and video. Also, perhaps even especially for short film, this expanded dimension provides free spaces demanding new patterns of thought in cinematic development. Following a short introduction, Zandrowicz will focus on character and story development as well as on the dramaturgy of the immersive short film. Pierre Zandrowicz, France, taught himself filmmaking through the production of numerous short films, many of which were conferred with awards. He co-founded the virtual reality studio OKIO with other directors and producers in 2014, specializing in the development of video content for commercial and narrative VR productions. His VR film, “I, Philipp” will be presented as part of the virtual reality screenings. Practical VR sessions will take place following the masterclass at “The Grand”. Speaker

INTERNATIONAL SCRIPT PITCH
SCRIPT PITCH – THE SELECTED PROJECTS What is real and what is fiction? How do the threads of fictional storytelling enmesh reality? When magic shields protect us from the brutality of everyday life in a war zone; or pure, masculine rage becomes food for the beast; and sheep-people dance choreographies – then reality has clearly kicked into hyper-reality mode. The screenwriters participating in this year’s round of Script Pitch, envision new worlds and forge fresh realities. But the ever-closer relationship between digital and analogue life is also raised: Which occurrences do we actually experience? How long do we physically wait until something changes in our digital world? In subtle microcosms, the stories develop their own realities that frequently leave us feeling puzzled, surprised and provoked. The endless search for an absent father that leads from Sweden to Beirut in Lebanon; the mystical curse afflicting males on the banks of a solitary lake; the sterile transaction of humanlife acquisitions in international organisations – by means of powerful atmosphere and compelling cinematic imagery the writers implement absurdity, provocation and inventiveness to merge their stories with the reality in which we live. But which reality, exactly? Hailing from all over the globe, the eight final contestants from countries as diverse as Jordan, Sweden, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and Madagascar will present their short film screenplays to the public.

FROM BOTTLE ROCKET TO WHIPLASH › GRÜNER SALON › THU 17.11. › 21:00 H
Can the short film, as independent film format, also function as a springboard to full-length film? For these filmmakers, the short film was the cinematic “calling card” that enabled them to develop the same material into a feature film. Surprising is the diversity of form, content and genre for which this progression is rewarding. No matter what path a director takes: the short film constitutes a first step.
