Home News U.K. AIIM affiliated group makes progress The move to have a British trade/user group that has an affiliation with, but is not part of, the U.S. Association for Information and Image Management is moving along. The suggestion is to be taken up by AIIM at its next board meeting and, if all goes well, the new group would be announced in January 1989. Initially it would be funded, for one year, by contributions from the UK micrographics industry, as well as user member dues. This is the pattern of AIIM funding. One reason for some funding to be in place before kick-off is the decision to have a full-time paid executive or secretariat rather than a volunteer head. “ It won’t work any other way,” according to one of the organizing members. The group, unnamed at the moment, intends to be a trade/professional society similar to AIIM and wants the affiliation to distribute AIIM’s journal “ Inform” as well as have access to the AIIM Resource Centre, which might be duplicated on a much smaller scale. The group would also distribute IMC’s journal to its members. Further down the road might be sponsorship or participation in a UK conference and exhibition that would include micrographics but also other imaging technologies such as optical disk. “ We might try our own hand or, if it’s more practical, affiliate with some one else such as the OIS (Optical Information Systems) show held in London and add micrographics to it,” said Tony Hendley, Cimtech, and one of the organizers along with Tony Wicks of Wicks and Wilson. “ But to be successful, the group’s emphasis will have to be on using multiple information techniques, not only micrographics,” said Hendley. One of the factors that has delayed getting the proposed AIIM-affiliated group off the ground was overcoming the reticence of other UK groups — such as the British Equipment and Information Trade Association — who felt that they should be the natural focal point of any new UK micrographics group. Such problems appear to have been resolved. BEITA and others apparently agree they cannot, or don’t want to, serve the special needs of the small UK micrographics and related technologies community. Thus, the new group is now forming and ready to march to the sound of its own drummer. Post Script Information has reached me, earlier than anticipated, just in time to add this ‘rider’ to the above article, but not in time for a rewrite. UKAIIM is an organisation that intends to involve users of imaging technology as well as manufacturers, dealers, bureaux, etc. It hopes to give a cohesive image to our industry, establish and maintain standards, run seminars and bring together all types of image management companies at an annual exhibition where micrographic, optical and magnetic vendors will give potential users the opportunity to decide the best solution for them at one comprehensive show. Judging from the names of the people directly involved with UKAIIM it seems to me that, once again, the emphasis is going to be on the high tech side of the business. Confirming this obervation is the fact that the address, telephone no. telex no. and fax shown on the UKAIIM letterhead is the same as that of Microinfo - a publication that specialises in the very technical aspects of optical discs etc. However, if you would still like further information or might even wish to join the organisation then you should contact one of the following:David Bralt (Kodak) on 0442 61122, Barry Edmonds (3M) on 0344 58464, Tony Wicks (Wicks & Wilson) on 0256 842211 or Chairman Tony Hendley (Cimtech) on 07072 79691. 8
