Acquisition of Xidex makes Anacomp Billion Dollar Group

Anacomp Inc. demonstrated further its commitment to the micrographics industry by purchasing the world wide interests of Xidex Inc. and, in so doing, creating a combined operation with a total revenue in excess of One Billion Dollars.
It was just over twelve months ago that Anacomp first launched onto the acquisition trail. At the time Anacomp confined its activities to the U.S.A. where it was recognised as the world’s largest micrographics bureau with 57 separate data centres distributed throughout major cities. With the purchase of DatagraphiX Inc. in early 1987, followed shortly by Consolidated Micrographics Inc., Anacomp moved quickly into the equipment field and at the same time, extended its operations outside of America through the range of its fully owned subsidiaries and 26 separate distributor operations. Following this activity, Anacomp further strengthened its position in the industry by purchasing the European base of COM recorders from Bell & Howell and thereby entering the third party service arena. previously offered under the DatagraphiX and Consolidated Micrographics labels but now add to that range all of the Xidex products including film and viewer/printers. Within the U.K. the marketing of the total micrographics range will be handled by Anacomp-DatagraphiX Limited with the establishment of a new sales division located in Milton Keynes. This Division is lead by Phil Bull, the ex U.K. Micrographics Manager for Xidex and he in turn will report to Allan Weselby, the U.K. General Sales Manager who is also responsible for the marketing of the COM product line. With regard to the Magnetics Division, this will continue to handle the branded magnetic media products including Dysan, XM2, Storage Master and Precision, flexible and floppy disks, tapes and cartridges. These products are marketed from the Magnetics Division based in Reading and manufactured in a 100,000 square foot facility in South Wales which provides products for the entire European market place.

The purchase of Xidex, for a figure in excess of 300 million dollars, is the biggest acquisition to date and not only confirms Anacomp’s intentions within the micrographics industry, but also takes it into the magnetic media market where Xidex is the world’s number one supplier. Xidex Inc.’s revenue in a full year is estimated at 650 million dollars with three major divisions, namely duplicate microfilm, viewers and reader/printers, and flexible, rigid disk and magnetic tape media. The integration of these various Xidex divisions into Anacomp is quickly being assimilated by the creation of two separate operating divisions within Anacomp Inc. The two operating divisions within Anacomp are known as Anacomp Micrographics and Anacomp Magnetics with an estimated turnover of 650 million dollars and 450 million dollars respectively. Within the Micrographics division Anacomp will continue to market the complete range of COM equipment
