WELCOME!

I

My journey with the Foundation began in June of 2021 and within the first couple months of being on this incredible team, it became evident that INTEGRIS Health strives to serve the Oklahoma community in every way.

By connecting with the INTEGRIS Health Foundation, you have joined a passionate group of friends who believe philanthropy possesses the ability to be revolutionary. Our goal is to improve the health of the communities we serve, and with that goal comes an ever-progressing vision for

what can be done to care for the patients at our facilities. At INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, the need to better serve those in the community with heart-related conditions has become apparent and INTEGRIS Health is proud to announce plans for a new state-ofthe-art Heart and ICU Hospital to focus on patients dealing with a broad spectrum of heart-related issues.

We anticipate breaking ground in early 2022, with the goal of opening our doors in 2024. INTEGRIS Health is committed to bringing world-class cardiovascular care to our community, state and region. With this transformative project, we aim to offer unprecedented care to generations of Oklahomans that no other facility in the surrounding region can match. Over the next year, you will learn more about how you can support the new INTEGRIS Health Heart Hospital and the impact your philanthropic support will have.

OUR GOAL IS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE. “

You are such an important part of the INTEGRIS Health Foundation family and we simply cannot do this without you. We are committed to working diligently to show you the impact your philanthropy can have at INTEGRIS Health.

Thank you for all you do to support the mission of INTEGRIS Health.

Sincerely,

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

The heart of INTEGRIS Health is bettering the lives of our community by helping people live healthier lives. We continue with that promise as we embark on building a new state-of-theart Heart and ICU Hospital, INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center at the Northwest Expressway campus. The Oklahoma community has supported the growth of our healthcare system since 1959 when the doors first opened at IBMC. This is where our health

system’s heart started to beat and life began. Since then, INTEGRIS Health has expanded to serve communities throughout the state. We are proud to build an advanced heart and ICU hospital- a hospital that will keep Oklahoma’s heart strong.

Building Hope & Healing

The impact of a new 209,000 square foot state-of-the-art Heart and ICU Hospital can be summarized into one word: everlasting. Beginning in 2024, caregivers, patients, their families and many more community members will experience the effects of this distinguished project with the unveiling of 64 ICU beds, multiple cardiac catheterization labs, cardiovascular operating rooms, hybrid operating rooms, electrophysiology heart labs, and convenient cardiac diagnostic testing areas.

Looking at the big picture, the new space is designed with the patient in mind, making navigating the hospital and clinics as easy as it has ever been in one convenient location. Currently, operating rooms, doctors’ offices and labs are spread across the campus. Creating one centralized building will not only help with efficiency, but also create a more patient-friendly environment.

Operating rooms are increasing in size to 950 square feet to accommodate the 20+ caregivers that are in the room during a heart transplant. Patient rooms are increasing to an average of 300 square feet to accommodate the necessary machinery to care for patients, allow for additional high-tech equipment, and create additional space for caregivers to work. Above all, patient well-being is at the forefront of our mission. It is well known that having loved ones surround a patient during recovery is vital, and with larger patient rooms, it will not only be less daunting to the family when they first see their loved one connected to multiple machines, it will also allow them to have space to be with them during their recovery.

In addition to the room expansions, a cutting-edge Radial lounge will be implemented into the design of the hospital to allow more day-of discharges. Previously, procedures such as placing a stint or an angioplasty would require the patient to stay overnight. However, a much less invasive surgery can be performed by using a Radial approach as opposed to the femoral approach, which allows for a quicker recovery. This radial lounge will allow patients to sit for a few hours while watching tv, reading, etcetera and then they can be discharged shortly after.

This everlasting, world-class expansion will provide unprecedented care and improve patient outcomes. This is an exciting chapter for INTEGRIS Health as a whole and will create a lasting legacy for future patients, their families and the community at large.

Billy Brenda

Billy came to INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center (IBMC) in 2021 for open-heart surgery due to earlier heart health issues. This would lead him to need a heart transplant—a journey that he knew would come with its ups and downs, but was never worried about the outcome. Billy says he knew he was in good hands with the team at IBMC.

At the same time, in the same hospital, a woman by the name of Brenda Larson would be embarking on her own journey of receiving a heart transplant. She felt the same way—a divine peace was telling her all would be okay. Brenda’s journey began in 2005 when she was diagnosed with heart failure. This was no surprise to Brenda because her mother and aunt passed away years before from the same disease. Because of this, Brenda says she wanted to live life to show people her faith. Her faith allowed her to see life beyond her time on earth. But on August 22, 2021 shortly before midnight, Brenda was given more life to live and received her transplant heart.

IT’S NOT JUST A PHYSICAL JOURNEY, IT’S A MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL JOURNEY.”

In addition to each other, Billy and Brenda attribute their emotional recovery to the staff at IBMC. “It’s more than the medicine, it’s the love that they share,” says Brenda. She mentioned how a nurse even dyed her hair for her while in recovery. To Brenda, “They are all the hands and feet of Jesus.” As for Billy, he says the nurses are like family, “The people that are there are loving you, even though they don’t even know you.” At one point in his recovery, his doctors believed he had a stroke. Billy details the experience of waking up to his nurses taking care of him and feeling as if they were angels. “They have a true calling,” says Billy.

BILLY MOSS’ ON HIS HEART TRANSPLANT JOURNEY.

Hours later on August 23, 2021, Billy received his heart transplant. From here, Billy and Brenda would run into each other in the halls when exercising, or in the cath lab waiting for a biopsy. They began sharing their journey with each other and became like family, leaning on each other during the good and bad moments of recovery.

Here at INTEGRIS Health, we are proud to provide this type of exceptional care. By opening a state-of-the-art heart and ICU facility, we are opening the doors to providing more patients this level of quality care. It is the stories of patients like Billy and Brenda, and many more, that INTEGRIS Health strives for every single day—a place to help patients heal not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. When asked what the new heart hospital means to them, Billy and Brenda expressed their excitement for this growth that will help treat many more people. They both also shared their gratitude for anyone who gives in support of the heart hospital because they are supporting lives being changed and lives being saved

Bailey Smith

Experiencing heart issues is likely the last thing to be of concern as a healthy 25-year-old, but for Bailey Smith, this was her reality. In the early months of 2020, what used to be an occasional heart arrhythmia leading to light-headedness began happening more frequently. She would feel as if she were about to pass out from doing basic activities like standing or walking due to her heart rate elevating to an unsafe level. “The fear of not knowing what is wrong with a crucial component of your body is terrifying. I was fearful that my heart was just going to stop working.” Disregarding the idea that it was stress-induced from making the move back home to Oklahoma City and starting a new job at the INTEGRIS Health Foundation, Bailey decided to make an appointment at INTEGRIS Health.

During her appointment with Dr. Cogar and his team, Bailey was reassured that she made the right decision to seek medical care. “They made me feel heard and seen, and that I was being taken seriously,” says Bailey, “They were always answering questions, taking me through their plan, and making me feel comfortable during a time where I had felt so uncertain.” Dr. Cogar ran extensive tests and began monitoring her heart, which identified frequent episodes of tachycardia. Bailey is scheduled to have a loop recorder implanted to help determine next steps. She often finds hope when she considers the advanced technology that is being used at INTEGRIS Health currently, as well as what is to come with the new state-of-the-art facility. “When you hear about cardiac problems, your mind immediately envisions an older population, but it’s exciting to think that we will have world-class technology to care for all populations,” says Bailey.

Dr. Mel Clark

As a Cardiologist in a state with one of the highest rates of heart disease, Dr. Mel Clark has treated a number of patients in his 40+ years of practice. Dr. Clark says, “The sheer number of patients treated at the current INTEGRIS Health Heart Hospital has increased dramatically and is close to being so high it is sure to challenge our existing facilities.” The planned expansion will increase the number of cardiovascular operating rooms, the number of heart catherization labs, electrophysiology labs and ICU beds dramatically, which will in turn directly benefit the care of Oklahomans. Dr. Clark is confident this expansion will allow providers to deliver the highest level of cardiovascular care in Oklahoma.

SO, WHAT MAKES THE NEW INTEGRIS HEALTH HEART AND ICU HOSPITAL UNIQUE?

In addition to the exceptional 36 Cardiologists providing care, this facility is the only hospital to offer a full range of cardiovascular care starting with preventive care, all the way up to acute cardiac care. “No other healthcare system in Oklahoma offers heart transplantation, lung transplantation, or the artificial mechanical heart option. We also have a state-of-the-art structural heart program for patients with valvular disease and we treat everything from prevention through patients with chest pain, heart failure, coronary artery disease, all the way to heart transplants.” Dr. Clark explains.

The hope of expanding the INTEGRIS Health Heart Hospital has been a dream for years, and it has been championed by Dr. Clark. Though it is a grand commitment and will take time to complete, it is absolutely vital for the progression of heart health for the state of Oklahoma. Dr. Clark perfectly articulates the importance of community support when he says, “If you care about the cardiovascular health of our fellow Oklahomans and want to make a real difference, I would strongly encourage you to consider donating.”

TRIBUTE TO

DR. PAUL SILVERSTEIN

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY FOR OVER 45 YEARS

Dr. Paul Silverstein served the Oklahoma community for over 45 years. As a caregiver, he strived to not only save his patients, but give them a full life after experiencing immense trauma. “Our goal was to rehabilitate a patient, not just save a life,” said Silverstein in 2019. “If a patient leaves here a whole person and a

productive member of society, then we have accomplished our goal. The mission of the INTEGRIS Paul Silverstein Burn Center is not only to save lives, but to reach ‘beyond survival,’ improving the patient’s quality of life by returning him or her to a maximum level of function and activity in society.”

TRIBUTE TO DR. PAUL SILVERSTEIN

Our goal was to rehabilitate a patient, not just save a life “

Among the INTEGRIS Health Foundation, it is often said that “Your Passion Matters.” Your passion matters because when passion is united with philanthropy, miraculous things can happen. Dr. Paul Silverstein found his passion and was able to change the lives of many, not only during his time as a practicing doctor, but for the generations to come.

Dr. Silverstein found his passion in treating burn patients while serving as a major in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1972. He served at the prestigious U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. There, he cared for and performed research for the benefit of military burn victims from the Vietnam conflict, along with other veterans, Native Americans, Eskimos and their families. It was an experience that drove him to find ways to treat and care for the most painful and devastating injury people suffer.

Following his time in the U.S. Army, Dr. Silverstein was recruited by INTEGRIS Health leadership to be head of the metro’s first burn treatment center. From the beginning, Dr. Silverstein changed the trajectory of his patients’ lives. He was passionate about giving his patients the best care from some of the most painful experiences, so that they would have the best possible life after treatment. When speaking with Dr. Amalia Miranda-Silverstein, Dr. Silverstein’s wife, she told the story of two young girls who received care from Dr. Silverstein. While in recovery, the girls grew tired of hospital food day in and day out, so Dr. Silverstein brought the girls a special order of his homemade pancakes. Some years later, when the girls found out Dr. Silverstein was in

the hospital receiving care, they wanted to return the favor. Dr. Silverstein was delighted to receive pancakes from two former patients whom he had cared for so well.

This is the essence of who Dr. Paul Silverstein was and what his legacy continues to be. He was a strong leader, who expected quality service from himself and his team. Yet, he had a joyful and gentle side that provided comfort to his patients that they desperately needed during the healing process. Dr. Silverstein performed his last surgery in 2017, as his battle with pancreatic cancer began to progress. Though this type of cancer is known to be aggressive and detrimental to quality of life, Dr. Silverstein’s goal was to have the quality of life he desired. And for many years, Dr. Silverstein was able to do so. He continued to support and grow the now named INTEGRIS Health Paul Silverstein Burn Center with a donation, in partnership with Dr. Miranda-Silverstein, of $1 million. He then proceeded to raise another $5 million for a burn endowment that will serve patients and families forever. This burn center is his legacy, and we are deeply honored for the longstanding impact Dr. Silverstein made at INTEGRIS Health benefiting countless Oklahomans.

Dr. Silverstein fought a noble nearly seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer and remained faithful in his service to his patients, community, and family until his passing. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Paul Silverstein know that his life was a gift to all.

The INTEGRIS Health Foundation celebrated its 10year anniversary of the YOU&I Campaign, a systemwide annual giving campaign powered by our very own employees. YOU&I represents the meaningful difference philanthropy can make when a large group of supporters band together for an enduring purpose. The campaign allows every member of the INTEGRIS Health family to support our system’s mission and patients through a personal financial investment, spanning 26 passions from pediatrics to transplant.

This year’s theme, Your Passion Matters, speaks to the culminating effect our personal passions have on those around us. In fact, since launching in 2012, INTEGRIS Health employees’ collective generosity has raised more than $6.5 million and funded projects impacting the lives of more than 250,000 people in our community—and beyond. YOU&I has created an internal culture

of philanthropy at INTEGRIS Health, and each gift makes a tangible impact on programs, cuttingedge technology, and patient care. For 10 years, our employees chose to give even more of themselves to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients and the community. For this, we stand in awe of them and recognize their unwavering commitment and herculean support.

Golf

The 2021 INTEGRIS Health Golf Classic was held on June 7 at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma. This tournament provided the opportunity to support families during one of the most powerful, life-changing moments in life–childbirth. Through proceeds of this year’s tournament, our goal was to impact the lives of thousands of Oklahomans who access services at INTEGRIS Canadian Valley Hospital’s Women’s Center. With the help of our partners, we were able to raise a record breaking $173,000! The funds raised will support necessary updates to patient rooms to ensure a comfortable stay for each family who receives care at the Women’s Center, as well as equipment for infants to keep them warm and provide a peaceful, fast healing environment.

Gala

The INTEGRIS Health Foundation hosted its first ever virtual gala on Friday, September 17 benefiting the INTEGRIS Health Neuroscience Institute. The event, originally planned for May 2020 and postponed two times due to COVID-19, was scheduled to be held in-person at Omni Oklahoma City Hotel. However, due to the reemerging concern of COVID-19, the Foundation team made the difficult but necessary decision to pivot the event to a virtual format with a few weeks’ notice. To ensure the evening provided the same celebratory spirit as it would in-person, participants received hand-delivered flowers, cocktail/dessert boxes, wine, and a credit from Door Dash to purchase a meal for delivery. More than 350 people participated in the event from all over the country, supporting key projects throughout the Neuroscience Institute. As neurological disorders become more common, advancement of this work becomes increasingly critical and we are incredibly grateful that our INTEGRIS Health Gala supporters donated more than $440,000 to fund meaningful projects across the Neuroscience Institute.

Beginning in June, Arcadia Trails began accepting insurance. This significantly improves access for those seeking addiction treatment.

Arcadia Trails INTEGRIS Health becomes the second “affiliate”-level member of the Hazelden Betty Ford Patient Care Network, a collection of health care organizations working together to expand addiction treatment services and improve patient outcomes.

Of these patients were helped through financial assistance or scholarship.

JAVIER LEY, DPC, MSHCT, MA , joined the team at Arcadia Trails INTEGRIS Center for Addiction Recovery early this year and has been an asset thus far. Ley began his work in the field of addiction treatment and co-occurring disorders in the Central American country of Nicaragua. There, he developed the first treatment organization that utilized evidence-based practices. Ley has experience in strategic planning, clinical innovations, technology strategy, budget development and management. INTEGRIS Health is grateful to have Javier as the new leader of Arcadia Trails, and we are thankful for his commitment to better the lives of others.
