Hand Therapy

QUESTIONS?

Patients at the INTEGRIS Health Paul Silverstein Burn Center will soon have a new form of therapy! YOU&I funds are being used to purchase two new gaming carts that are expected to arrive in early 2024. These carts will come with a monitor, console system, and controllers on a rolling stand. By incorporating video games into therapy, patients are encouraged to move their hands, which can decrease contractures and the need for repeat surgeries. Gaming carts provide a fun way to get patients engaged in their care and will make a lasting impact on burn patients.

2023 PROJECT UPDATE

CanServe - Third Course

Since 2014, the INTEGRIS Health Cancer Institute has been providing five wholesome meals to patients beginning cancer treatment. These meals, which are made with love at INTEGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center, help patients recover between treatments and deal with unfamiliar side affects from medications. Beyond contributing to their physical wellness, these meals help take the stress away from patients by eliminating the burden of meal preparation for the first week. In just under nine years, more than 4,000 meals have been distributed to patients.

Impacting Health Outcomes

QUESTIONS?

Meet Veronica, a 20 year old who had five hospital admissions and 25 emergency room visits one year prior to beginning with the Community Care Coordination Team (CCCT). Her medical issues ranged from abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and in one instance, cardiac arrest. These symptoms were a result of severely low potassium levels in her body, a life-threatening condition. Once she began working with CCCT, she was established with a primary care provider, connected with a mental health provider and started medications to control her symptoms. Unfortunately, Veronica’s home life was unstable, forcing her to travel between multiple homes for respite. To help remind her to take her meds, the CCCT supplied her with a medication organizer and pill planners.

Today, Veronica is no longer experiencing abdominal complications, attends her medical appointments, takes her meds as prescribed and is now working at a nursing home while taking classes to get into LPN school. Veronica is one of 40 patients the CCCT help each year.

Child Life

Thank you for your contribution to support pediatric patients and children of adult patients in your community. Here's what your generosity created.

2023 PROJECT UPDATE

Compassionate Creations

The team of dedicated Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) has been busy creating positive memories for families. When a patient with minor children is placed on comfort care, CCLS works with the child and parent to create pieces of artwork, like handprints, that help establish positive memories.

QUESTIONS?

In the past, adult units have called Child Life for assistance during these situations, but due to limited capacity, they’re not always able to respond. To make sure children are cared for around the clock, YOU&I funds have been used to make compassionate creation boxes that contain simple instructions and the supplies needed for a small art project. Since October 2023, these boxes have been provided to 10 departments that care for adult patients at IHBMC and will soon be impacting 50+ families of adult patients per month.

Playground Safety Enhancements

Exciting developments are taking place at Children’s Place and Fun & Fit locations within both INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center and Southwest Medical Center. The first phase, which includes installing a new fence, will be complete in November 2023. Then, crews will begin installing shade canopies. The addition of shade canopies is a significant enhancement, providing much-needed relief to the children during the hot summers. Looking ahead, the team is eager to continue this positive momentum by raising additional funds in the 2024 YOU&I Campaign. These funds will support the installation of more shade structures over the next few years, ensuring an even more comfortable and enjoyable outdoor environment for the young ones.

Point-of-Care IV Imaging

After completing a trial period last year, three new portable ultrasound systems have arrived at INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center. These devices will serve at least five units within the hospital with the goal of improving the patient experience by reducing the number of IV attempts. The devices will be used when the vascular access team is unavailable, especially at night, to administer medications, contrast dye, and maintenance fluids for patients with difficult vascular access. Staff training is underway, and the devices will be used with patients soon.

Following the conclusion of renovations, we are eager to embark on the implementation of the full Imagination Walls project in multiple units. These wall-mounted, decorated whiteboards will serve as creative outlets for pediatric patients. With additional funding, sensory walls and floor decals will be installed outside classrooms, offering children a designated space to take breaks from group activities and regulate their emotions.

Modern Dining Amenities

Significant strides have been taken to revitalize the dining area at the INTEGRIS Health Miami Hospital. Renovations are currently underway and so far, ceiling tiles are being replaced, new light fixtures installed, new wall paint and a new microwave and TVs. The commitment to refresh this space has transformed it to a welcoming and brighter space. The only remaining item to complete this refresh is to purchase new furniture, which should arrive shortly after the start of the new year.

Though the exact number of patients and caregivers impacted is unknown, the Miami dining area is accessible to all, fostering a more comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. Your support ensures that the hospital remains a modern and inviting facility, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to the well-being of patients and caregivers alike. We are sincerely grateful for your dedication to enhancing the hospital experience for all those who walk through our doors

Activity of Daily Life Aides

QUESTIONS?

Patients at the INTEGRIS Health MDA Neuromuscular Center have some degree of reduced mobility. Some can sit in a wheelchair or use a walker, while others are restricted to laying in a bed. However, new equipment purchased using YOU&I funds aims to help patients prolong their independence.

Equipment such as posterior lateral struts (pictured top left) provide stability and helps propel patients as they walk. Transfer chairs and seat cushions (pictured bottom left) combines the function of a wheelchair with the mobility of a rolling walker with a seat. Ankle foot orthoses, vista collars and more are being used to improve quality of life for neuromuscular patients.

NICU Kangaroo Chairs

2023 PROJECT UPDATE

QUESTIONS?

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will soon be home to brand new Kangaroo Chairs, expected to arrive at the start of 2024. Caregivers are extremely excited about this addition to the NICU because parents often stay at the bedside for the majority of the day, so a comfortable place to sit is of the utmost importance. Some of the sweetest and most memorable moments for families occur during skinto-skin time, and these chairs will help promote more of these moments. Your support helps create an environment that nurtures the well-being of both parents and their precious newborns.

2023 PROJECT UPDATE

Facial Recognition & Tag Cameras

YOU&I funds are working to significantly enhancing the safety measures at INTEGRIS Health. Facial recognition technology is being implemented, reinforcing our commitment to the wellbeing of patients, caregivers, and visitors. This cutting-edge system enables public safety caregivers to proactively identify individuals with potential criminal intentions or threats to the facility, staff, or patients. The addition of this technology strengthens our security efforts and contributes to an increased sense of safety for everyone, particularly benefiting caregivers and patients involved in violent or potentially violent domestic relationships. YOUR 2023 IMPACT

The ongoing project is currently progressing, with the upgrade of 20 cameras in the main entrance and Emergency Room at both INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center and INTEGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center. The selection of these facilities is based on their size and the volume of people they serve. Looking ahead, the goal is to extend this technology to 70 cameras across all INTEGRIS Health facilities in the near future.

Bereavement Baskets

QUESTIONS?

Since beginning the Bereavement Baskets project in 2022, the Pastoral Care team has been in metro hospitals providing care to families who have a loved one on comfort care measures. These baskets, which contain bottles of water, chips, cookies, and other snacks, provide a tangible expression of compassion. Chaplains are trained that it's not so much important what you say but how you remain present in a time of crisis. Bereavement baskets offer a chance for chaplains to enter a patient’s room and offer services. Thanks to a strong partnership between Pastoral Care and clinical staff, an average of 60 baskets are distributed to families each month.

We are thrilled to announce the arrival of two new portable ultrasounds, made possible through your generous donation. These state-of-the-art devices are instrumental in facilitating the placement of ultrasound-guided peripheral IVs. The advanced technology enables caregivers to assess whether the vein is sufficiently large and shallow for the chosen catheter's length and size, all while serving as a visual aid to guide the needle accurately into the vein. This innovative addition empowers bedside caregivers to achieve more efficient vascular access, reducing the time and number of attempts required to place an IV.

Caregiver Emergency Relief Fund

Thank you for your generous contribution to this year's Project: YOU&I, which has provided crucial funding to the Caregiver Emergency Relief Fund. The significance of this fund cannot be overstated—it serves as a lifeline for caregivers facing profound personal losses or other critical emergencies, providing them with the necessary time off or financial assistance. Since the start of 2023, your support has impacted 17 caregivers, offering more than 950 hours of paid time off and over $14,000 in financial aid. This allows caregivers the invaluable opportunity to take the time they need to care for their loved ones, recover, and return to their optimal selves.

Stanley Hupfeld Academy

Thank you for your contribution to support students in your community. Here's what your generosity created.

Medication & Equipment

Thanks to YOU&I funds, numerous enhancements have been implemented at the school to create a more enriching environment for the students. One notable addition is the installation of a book vending machine, where children earn special tokens for acts of kindness, academic achievements, and good behavior. This not only promotes a love for reading but also encourages positive behavior among the students. Additionally, your support has allowed for the resurfacing of a 20year-old tennis/basketball court over the summer, bringing joy and excitement to the kids. Furthermore, new benches and a Revirock Bouncer/Spinner have been installed in the Pre-K/Kindergarten playground, providing additional recreational opportunities for the youngest learners.

Stroke

Education & Aftercare

Stroke patients at INTGERIS Health facilities receive educational materials on how to care for themselves and prevent another stroke from happening. With YOU&I funds, these educational materials, along with a blood pressure cuff, will be provided in a tote bag that they can take home with them. By providing blood pressure cuffs, patients can actively monitor themselves for hypertension, one of the main causes of a stroke, and seek medical treatment when necessary.

In addition to these resources provided to patients, an onstaff Stroke Community Educator provides education presentations to nursing home staff, community centers, libraries and more. This is another setting in YOU&I funded materials can be provided to spread awareness.

Lodging for Transplant Patients and Families

Since 2016, YOU&I funds have provided necessary lodging support to patients of INTEGRIS Health Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute. Since the start of 2023, 60 patients and their families have received financial assistance with travel. Patient families travel an average of 100 miles to come to the transplant institute and need to stay for additional testing, medical appointments, or to support a loved one. Funds typically provide two days of assistance, giving them enough time to take care of their medical needs. Thanks to generous donors, patients no longer have to make difficult decisions regarding their care and their family’s financial needs.
