Hello,
and welcome
to the first edition of GLEEK Magazine.
I’ve decided that GLEEK needs to go through a rebrand. I’d been thinking about our project as a whole. A lot of the ideas we have are great, and I couldn’t be happier with our work and results thus far. But the overall vision as a comprehensive magazine, I came to realize, was lacking in terms of essence and intent, which was an oversight on my part. In light of the very serious political and social era we are entering rapidly, I couldn’t help but feel like GLEEK would only contribute to the nonsensical media noise storm we live in today, with shiny beautiful things attracting us but serving little purpose beyond vanity. Inspiring others is the main message of GLEEK, so I propose a rebrand.
The title of our first edition is as follows: GLEEK VOLUME 1; The world is ending but I haven’t kissed you yet. The concept combines social and political thought and expression as communicated through art and writing. In context of our world, where can we still find value? Hopefully, we can portray the answer to be artistry, authenticity and human connection. Themes like nostalgia, love and sexuality, beauty and memory will still be relevant, which we have already explored through some shoots I hope to add in important tones of politics, activism, identity, struggle and humanity as well. I will be hoping to implement more ‘controversial’ events such as the Trump presidency, DEI, our impending war, psychology and self-harm, international war and occupation and more. I’ve completed a proposed outline of the issue (attached below) and I encourage you to take a look.
If you see, it’s not all pol h a magazine about creativity and expression .

everything a body says holds fluidity
doesn’t have to be murmured

the mouth & the muscles do not rival one another the brain & the heart dork apart but sing together discord seeks truth darkness finds beauty

If you have changed your mind about contributing to GLEEK after this, I totally understand. This wasn’t the originally intended view of GLEEK, which was at first pitched as a sort of cool coffee-table visual library.
However, I think that we are all much deeper and stronger than just a pretty few pages, and I implore you to consider this what do you want your work to show for? It seems unjust to release something we’ve committed so much to if not to spark actual conversation and change.
Anyway, do let me know your thoughts and opinions. I’ll reach out again early next month regarding our next steps, and how to be in shape for the school year to come. Thank you all again for taking the time to hear me out, and I hope we can all make this magazine even stronger than it’s turning out to be now.
