A MOVABLE FEAST

Serial restaurateur Jen Agg talks about her buzzy new Toronto hot spot and shares some of her favourite places around the world. By Christopher Turner

Even before launching The Black Hoof in 2008 and changing the dining landscape in Toronto forever, Jen Agg was about making connections and breaking ground. So it’s no surprise that her latest project, General Public, which sits in an industrial space on Geary Avenue in the heart of Toronto’s emerging warehouse district, opened in fall 2024 and instantly became a west-end hot spot. The fanfare was, of course, warranted. General Public is a striking two-level, 100-seat space with some of the city’s best cocktails. The menu, courtesy of executive chef James Santon, reads like a mash-up of high-end British pub fare and old-school steakhouse.

“I didn’t even fully know what the colour scheme was going to be until eight months into the build,” says Agg of her latest venture.

While the concept of General Public was pretty firmly decided, creating the interior was a much longer process that Agg says felt pretty uncertain at times.

“I was literally struck speechless by the slab of green mottled quartzite that got cut and polished into the most beautiful bar top. From that, everything was suddenly so clear!”

Like her other spots in Toronto (Bar Vendetta, Le Swan, Grey Gardens, Rhum Corner and Cocktail Bar), General Public definitely has a vibe. The high ceilings, peachy pink mezzanine, deep green ceiling and walls, wood details, lush comfy banquettes and alcoves, the sleek wooden bar…all part of Agg’s vision.

“New Order’s ‘Everything’s Gone Green’ started playing on a loop in my head and I could just see the whole downstairs — a mix of olives, forest and many other greens, which was perfect against the backdrop of tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of millwork,” she says. “And I decided that the peach I had wanted to incorporate in the green scheme would wholly be put upstairs in an ’80s cocaine fever-dream of a space. Merging the two, so it makes sense, took a lot of thought, but I feel like I achieved something by making it work.”

The secret to tying everything together?

“It’s all about the ferns!” And the accessories, which are Agg’s favourite part of the process. “I am pretty obsessed with the large-scale fabric flower on the mezzanine level,” she says. “And I love the bar lamps. I decided on them last minute after scrapping an earlier idea. I keep myself open to shifts and changes, but only my own. I am stubborn and defensive of my own design ideas.”

Agg has been that way ever since she opened The Black Hoof; a “nose-to-tail”.

Now, 10 restaurants later, Agg is one of Canada’s most prominent restaurateurs, able to create trends before anyone else. She also topped best book lists with her candid 2017 memoir, I Hear She’s a Real Bitch . She has a follow-up book in the works, but that’s under wraps for now.

“I will just say my next book is called They’ll Toast Me When I’m Dead! ” Agg says. “And they will, but too bad I’ll have to be dead!”

Since launching General Public, Agg is gearing up to set Toronto’s next restaurant trend. Photo: Shlomi Amiga.

ROSETTA RESTAURANT

“I have been doing this stupid restaurant thing too long and am under-travelled for it, but I really love Mexico City,” says Agg. Rosetta, a beautifully decorated restaurant in a large old mansion in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City, tops her list. The menu is creative and seasonal with a fusion of Mexican flavours and Italian techniques. Colima #166, Colonia Roma Norte, Mexico City; rosetta.com.mx/en/

“No trip to New York City would be complete without a long bar sit at The Four Horsemen,” Agg says of the Michelin-starred, James Beard Awardwinning restaurant in the Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn, which opened in 2015. Helming the kitchen at the legendary restaurant and wine bar is Nick Curtola, who has created a menu of exceptional small plates/tapas, which pair perfectly with the world-renowned naturalwine list. 295 Grand Street, Brooklyn, N.Y.; fourhorsemenbk.com

OLFACTORY TOUR

Discover the travel-inspired fragrances that will take you far and wide. By Ingrie Williams

Whether it’s a whiff of sweet Japanese cherry blossoms or a buttery Parisian-worthy croissant, our sense of smell can instantly transport us back to a specific place. Unlike other senses, our olfactory bulb is a part of the brain that is directly linked to sections responsible for memory and emotion. Given that we’re biologically hard-wired for something in the air to create a flashback to a feel-good moment on vacation, it’s no wonder that fragrances with ties to geographical locations have long been popular among perfumers.

In 1917, François Coty launched a scent inspired by the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. His perfume, Chypre de Coty, was such a hit after the Great War that it opened the way to the olfactory family called “chypre”, used by perfumers in France since the 1700s. Coty’s innovative blend balanced citrusy bergamot with the sweetness of jasmine and a resiny note with leathery qualities derived from the botanical labdanum. “Inspired by the aromas found on the islands, Coty’s creation had a lasting impact on the fragrance industry,” says Montreal-based Ruby Brown, who creates bespoke perfume under her eponymous line.

As the nose behind the signature scent of Le Germain Hotels (a warm, sensual and enveloping mix of amber and hemp), Brown often finds travel to be a launching pad for new creative expressions. Minuit Marrakech is a scented candle that was sparked by her visit to Jardin Majorelle, the garden of fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, while on a trip to Morocco. “The orange blossoms, the mint tea, the stones and the greenery were all so beautiful that I wanted to capture that experience in a scent,” she says.

Designed to evoke everything from the vast, bracing shores of Iceland to an intimate night out in New York City, each of these eight fragrances are an open invitation to an unforgettable journey.

OFF WHITE

Rev up your table settings with an injection of colour, and spark conversation and connection over your next, and every, meal.

Have you ever considered how much of your life is spent eating? The math maths out to over 32,000 hours of meals during a lifetime. Not all of these are sit-down affairs with family or friends. But results of a study by researchers at the University of Minnesota suggest that we’d all be better off if they were. Findings published in March 2024 reveal that study participants in Italy, Germany and the U.S. who regularly gathered around a table to share meals not only enjoyed a stronger sense of connectedness, but also experienced improvements in mood. You know what else has been proven to deliver mood-boosting benefits? Colour.

The turning of tables on the tyranny of the plain white plate is welcome news for Toronto-based author Laura Calder, whose recent books — The Inviting Life: An Inspirational Guide to Homemaking, Hosting and Opening the Door to Happiness and

Kitchen Bliss: Musings on Food and Happiness — and her Substack newsletter, A Place at My Table, explore the quotidian pleasures of gathering to prepare and share meals. While trained in the culinary arts and with a back catalogue of cookbooks on French cuisine, Calder is a proponent of the current trend to shelve plain white restaurantware and set the table with personality and pattern. “Colourful table settings can make a plain dish seem sophisticated or make a sophisticated dish more approachable,” says Calder. The trick to getting the mix right, she says, is to strive for harmony and set a table that will make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Tabletop trends echo societal shifts much in the same way that fashion does. The two categories have been linked since the 1950s, when French couturier Christian Dior was the first fashion designer to introduce signature dinnerware. The fashion-tabletop connection continues at brands across price

points from Ralph Lauren and Hermès, to Zara, H&M, Anthropologie and more. But no one has mastered the fashion-tabletop crossover better than Martina Mondadori, founder of cult interiors magazine Cabana and its companion housewares line, Casa Cabana, filled with exuberant colour and pattern that she layers with maximalist abandon. Meanwhile, traditional tabletop houses such as Ginori and Wedgwood are bringing fashion-forward designs to their collections.

What we eat also impacts how we serve it. What better partner for hyper-local cuisine than on a hyper-local handmade plate? The latest viral power grain bowls and one-pot recipe meet their match in the “blate,” a wide bowl with low sides (think pasta bowl) that’s perfect for forkable meals. Science and tabletop design trends are delivering a clear message this spring. It’s time to set your table with colour, invite people for a meal and to connect.

THE THROUGH LINE

Author Emma Donoghue, based in London, Ontario, offers a glimpse into what inspires her to create the worlds that connect us all. By

Follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly. This piece of advice from literary powerhouse Franz Kafka is something Irish-Canadian writer Emma Donoghue has taken to heart.

Fans of Donoghue’s work — 14 novels, nine plays, five short story collections, three film scripts, three books on literary history and two children’s books and counting — know that everything she creates begins as an obsession.

Her newest book, The Paris Express, was inspired during Donoghue’s hunt for a Paris rental apartment, and a search of the city’s Montparnasse neighbourhood had her down a rabbit hole for nearly a year. The reason?

A collection of photographs of the area on October 22, 1895, a day French historians consider to be one of the country’s most catastrophic locomotive disasters.

One photo in particular captured Donoghue’s interest. Titled Accident à la Gare Montparnasse and credited to Studio Lévy and Sons, the snapshot freeze-frames the moment when a steam train has broken through the station’s buffers and walls while coming off of an elevated track. This breathtaking image captures the crash that left part of the train hanging off the

upper floor of the station, dipping onto a Montparnasse pedestrian street below.

“I saw that picture and it was like falling in love,” says Donoghue. The snapshot prompted her to hunt down the train’s passenger list and tap into French state military and matrimonial records of each person riding coach or first class on that fateful day. More than 40 archival articles reported on the accident also helped fill in the gaps. “Seeing that train spill onto the street was a thrilling sensation. It made me want to research anyone and everything that had to do with this incident. I found myself going through sources which informed the characters I built on, real and fictional, They’re not hard facts about my story, but they’re really rich sources.” What surprised Donoghue most was the cast she found on board.

“People often assume that those who were riding were only very rich white people, but 1890s Paris was just such a happening place with people from all over the French Empire and other countries in the West. I was able to assemble a multicultural and varied cast…. And to think all these characters came to be because I took one look at an old image. After that, I had to write a book about it.”

A similar long-standing connection to history happened in 1990, when Donoghue was studying in Cambridge and stopped by a bookstore because she saw in the window I Know My Own Heart: The Diaries of Anne Lister 1791-1840 , edited by Helena Whitbread. Initially, she was drawn to its green spine, yet Donoghue’s fascination

piqued when she discovered she nabbed a collection of diary entries by a woman often referred to as “the first modern lesbian” in England. ›

Photo: Jesica Chana Sweedler
“It’s the golden ticket for a writer to be connected to multiple generations and to represent voices that have historically been silenced.”

After reading Lister’s entries, Donoghue was hooked, writing a play adaptation of I Know My Own Heart and a novel, Learned by Heart , a fictional take on Lister’s romance with heiress Eliza Raine. Lister’s diary entries, which were often written in code, kept Donoghue looking for hidden meaning in the text for years.

“In my teens, I chose to write poetry because it’s wonderfully ambiguous,” Donoghue says, “especially if you write poems addressed to a gender-neutral ‘you.’ This way, you can say a lot without ever having to specify a gender. I remember moments when I’d win a poetry prize at school, in my school of 600 girls, and the nuns would have me stand up and read the poem aloud. The girl I was writing the poem about was right there. Those situations did feel extremely coded, tense and, of course, thrilling. As soon as I switched over to fiction, there were no more disguises.”

Moving into fiction gave Donoghue the kind of success that most authors merely dream of. She’s won over 20 literary awards and received global attention when her novel, Room, was made into a film by Lenny Abrahamson in 2015. The book focuses on a mother and son held captive in a bunker by a sexual abuser, and had many studios bidding for the movie rights. Donoghue insisted that she be the one to write the script. Her instinct was spot on as the film went on to win an Academy Award for Best Actress and

received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Room — which at its base speaks to a child and mother being imprisoned — has become a mix of allegory and a forewarning for many astute new reviewers on TikTok who are making the connection.

“I think the questions that I tried to ask in Room are kind of existential. How can you make meaning of your life when you are unfree? How does a mother take a pregnancy, which was in no way intentional, and turn it into something to give her life meaning and joy completely separate from her captor? Those tensions between being a mother and being a person have stayed extremely relevant.”

It’s the golden ticket for a writer to be connected to multiple generations and to represent voices that have historically been silenced. For the longest time, Donoghue would joke that she was the only lesbian in Ireland when asked about why she moved to Canada (it was for love, she’s married to Canadian professor Chris Roulston). Instead of seeing her identity as something that could pigeonhole her work, Donoghue embraces all facets of herself and her audiences.

“I’m very happy to represent for the Irish, for women, for queers of all stripes, for Canadians, so long as nobody then expects me to always write about those people,” she says, laughing. “Anyone who’s had a best-seller is lucky, so you won’t catch me complaining.”

Donoghue garnered worldwide attention when her novel, Room, was made into an Oscarnominated film by Lenny Abrahamson in 2015.

A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA

Standout amenities are on offer for buyers seeking luxury condos in Canada’s major markets. By

The tricked-out gym. A private dog park. Service personnel going above and beyond. Buildings with unique amenity offerings enhance condo life, making it more comfortable, convenient and enticing. And when it comes time to sell, those extras will make the unit stand out from the rest.

Looking for a condo that will be a wonderful home right now — and also position you down the road for a good

potential return on your investment?

Consider this smart piece of advice from Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Realtors in major Canadian cities: Pay attention to the amenities

This is sound and timely advice, given the current condo scenario, as the slower market of the past year provides exciting opportunities for strategic plays in the luxury sector. “It’s a great moment for domestic buyers to take advantage of this

lull and buy some incredible assets that are available in some of the top buildings [in cities],” says Andy Taylor, Broker and Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Toronto.

MONTRÉAL

While any pool is a nice perk, larger ones have more appeal, notes Cyrille Girard, a Sotheby’s International Realty Québec Real Estate Broker. “I have a property in one building with a 25-metre pool, which is semi-Olympic and allows you to not just swim but [also] to really train.”

That said, Girard believes that the best amenity in the luxury condo sector is exclusivity which is delivered by only a select few of the properties in Montréal. “At the Four Seasons, there are only 18 residences,” he points out. “People paying luxury prices don’t want 550 other units in their building with residents in studios and one-bedrooms.” The condos in Montréal’s Four Seasons Private Residences offer the privilege of sharing a building with Four Seasons Hotel, granting them integrated access to Marcus, a gourmet restaurant helmed by acclaimed chef Marcus Samuelsson, along with premium housekeeping services.

VANCOUVER

Many luxury condo buyers are not looking for just a home for themselves; they also want

MONTRÉAL, QC MLS 21185261
Exclusive condo buildings like the Four Seasons Private Residences in Montreal, which has only 18 residences, can be promising long-term investments.

a home for their cars, says Will McKitka, a Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Vancouver. “High-net-worth individuals tend to purchase nice vehicles, so a private garage is something [they would] expect north of $10 million.” Wine storage is another typical request. “Climate-controlled wine lockers are one example of that. At the Alberni, there’s a wine tasting room with a 20-seat table that’s fun and prestigious to walk your friends through.”

Design is another major draw that differentiates a high-end property, notes Kevin Hardy, Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Vancouver. “If we’re talking architectural hyper-luxury buildings, there are really just a few of them — the Alberni, the Butterfly and the Erickson.” Led, respectively, by “starchitects” Kengo Kuma, Bing Thom and Arthur Erickson, these three condo towers deliver a strong design statement with their sculptural façades. They all take advantage of Vancouver’s ultimate amenity: the natural landscape. The Alberni features an expansive private moss garden, the Butterfly integrates open-air “sky garden” breezeways in between units, and the Erickson boasts top-notch waterfront views. “Vancouver is the most beautiful place in Canada in the fall, moving into summer,” says Hardy, “so people want to enjoy that.”

VICTORIA

Also defined by spectacular surroundings is the city of Victoria, where the bountiful amenities at high-end condos maximize the natural setting. While many units feature large patios and communal garden areas that open right up to the waterfront, Pier One on Montreal Street takes it up a notch with its own private marina. “They rent out the slips, and if not everybody in the building has a boat, they offer what’s left to a waiting list,” says Robyn Wildman, Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Victoria. But it’s not just the residents who benefit from the condo’s amenities; their extended families also enjoy them. “A lot of our buildings have great guest suites,” Wildman says, noting that this extra feature makes it easy for out-of-town family members to visit. “We’re a very touristy town with a lot of good restaurants and fun activities througout the seasons. Everyone likes to get in on those.”

And still on the subject of seasons, there’s a condo amenity that Wildman points out as particularly useful (and invaluable) on muddy spring days — a pet wash station,

“It’s one of the things that really gets [condo dwellers] excited!”

CALGARY

“Calgary remains relatively undervalued compared to other key Canadian markets,” says Corinne Poffenroth, Senior VicePresident of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Calgary. With the majority of the city’s luxury condo sales currently in the range of $1 million to $1.5 million, Poffenroth notes that buyers can enjoy access to the high life for less than what they would need to spend in other markets. “One of our key sales this year is a penthouse in Le Germain Residences,” she reports. Located above Le Germain Hotel Calgary, that penthouse has access to the same services offered by the downtown hotel — valet parking, housekeeping and drycleaning — plus convenient access to the Charcut Roast House fine-dining restaurant on the ground floor. “Especially for a buyer working in multiple markets, those hotel-level services really fit their lifestyle needs,” says Poffenroth.

Boardrooms too are another major draw, which cater to the business crowd, Poffenroth adds. Which is not to say that luxury condos in Calgary are neglecting the kick-back factor. For example, the Princeton Grand, along the Bow River in Eau Claire, features a Tuscan-style temperaturecontrolled wine cellar and tasting room.

TORONTO

Luxury condo buildings are best evaluated, not on any one amenity space but, rather, on their overall standard of service, says Taylor.

“It’s always nice to have a good gym,” Taylor concedes. “But at the end of the day, people want that [high-end] experience — from when they pull up their car to when the valet opens the door to [when] the concierge [welcomes them in.] And the Ritz-Carlton Residences, in my opinion, has the best level of service of any place in Toronto. It’s that training they get from the Ritz — that culture where ‘no’ is not in their vocabulary.” Another bonus is the building’s connection to the PATH, which allows residents who work downtown to be able to walk to their office in wintertime without having to go outside. “You’re getting much more bang for your buck [at Ritz condos],” says Taylor, “and I believe it’s the most undervalued building in the city.”

But perhaps not for much longer. “Right now, there’s potential for buys at levels that haven’t been [available] since before Covid,” he predicts. “But the new condos that are going to be delivered in the next two to five years are a lot of standard products, so luxury inventory is going to remain low. And if there are changes to the non-resident buyers ban and the buying pool increases — hopefully sooner rather than later — we’ll see prices increase, too.”

THE GREAT ESCAPE

Purchasing a weekend getaway or vacation home doesn’t have to be a pipe dream. Sotheby’s International Realty Canada’s Realtors® unveil the secret of co-ownership. By Josh Greenblatt

The dream of owning a second home is becoming a reality for more Canadians — young professionals, growing families and retirees alike. It’s a dream that promises a tranquil escape, outdoor adventures and, perhaps, even a lifestyle upgrade. But for first-time seekers of that perfect second property, the process requires research and advice from experts. Whether the end goal is a sleek chalet in Collingwood, a cozy lakeside retreat in the Eastern Townships or a modern cabin nestled in the Rockies, Canada’s markets for most-sought-after secondary homes are an ideal way to ease into the R&R dream house.

EASTERN TOWNSHIPS, QUEBEC

Located less than an hour from Montreal and the U.S. border, the Eastern Townships in Quebec are a haven for active urbanites looking for a slice of the country just outside the city. Lac-Brome and Bromont are especially popular for second-home buyers, with luxury lakefront properties hovering between $2 million and $7 million. “I think the younger generation wants to have more of a balance in their lives,” says Marie-Piers Barsalou, a Certified Real Estate Broker with Sotheby’s International Realty Québec. “They want a very nice environment and a nice home, whether it’s on the lake or in the mountains or in a village.” For young families looking for a second home that suits their active lifestyles but keeps their commute to under an hour should consider Knowlton, a picturesque lakeside village with nearby golf and skiing.

SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY, ONTARIO

Mountainside and lakeside adventures are on offer just two hours northwest of Toronto, in the Southern Georgian Bay region. Active retirees come in the summertime to fish and kayak along the

Beaver and Nottawasaga rivers, or to hike and bike on Collingwood’s robust trail network. And in wintertime, those trails are perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Collingwood is also home to the Blue Mountain ski resort and a high concentration of private ski clubs, including Devil’s Glen, Craigleith and Osler Bluff. According to Kevin Gilchrist, a Senior Vice-President of Sales at Sotheby’s International Realty who serves the area, condos are great entry-level options for those looking for a ski property. “They’re basically maintenance-free. That’s all looked after within the investment.” Despite a downturn in the secondary market in early 2022, lower interest rates have sparked renewed interest. For example, a two-bedroom condo recently lowered its price from $1.45 million to $1.15 million. Growing families are spoiled for choice in the market for larger accommodations, from townhouse-style condos to detached single-family homes and luxury chalets for between $3 million and $4 million. “They’re right on the hill so you can ski right down into your property,” says Gilchrist.

CANMORE, ALBERTA

In Canmore, lifestyle is the top consideration for those looking for a second home. The region is known for its long ski season, proximity to provincial parks and the wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking to fly fishing. According to Christopher Vincent, Sales Associate and Senior Vice President of Sales in the region, Alberta-based buyers from mid-sized cities like Calgary want to live in desirable neighbourhoods in the

valley bottom — like Spring Creek, South Canmore and Lion’s Park — which are near mountain biking trails, the Nordic Centre and the Horseshoe Loop. “They still want the hustle and bustle of smalltown living — restaurants, shops, access to the trail system, grocery stores,” says Vincent. Buyers that come to Canmore from major eastern cities tend to buy larger estate homes in quiet, scenic golf course communities, such as Silvertip Resort. They’re after more space, no neighbours and total tranquillity in the Rockies.

OKANAGAN VALLEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA

With it’s sweeping vistas, tight-knit communities and convenient, wide-ranging outdoor offerings, the Okanagan Valley has become a hot spot for second-home buyers. It’s dotted with world-class ski resorts (Revelstoke, SilverStar), championship golf courses (Predator Ridge) and pristine lakefronts, making it a popular destination for year-round leisure activities. Popular resort communities, such as the Outback, Spirit Ridge and Predator Ridge, cater to diverse lifestyles and budgets, from affordable opportunities like fractional ownership to million-dollar lakeside homes. The biggest perk? “We’re still skiing in April!” says Marnie Perrier, a Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Real Estate Advisor serving the area. “You can ski, bike and water-ski, all in one day.”

When looking for that second home, pin down your priorities. Are you after value, ample space, leisure options or scenery? There is sure to be a recreational community to suit your needs.

MAKING WAVES

At Halifax’s Mystic, embark on a culinary voyage where Maritime terroir meets modern seafaring design. By

he catchphrase of the mixed-use Queen’s Marque development on Halifax’s waterfront is “Born of This Place.” This promise is reflected in the stunning harbour views that encircle the city’s first luxury boutique hotel, The Muir, and the architecture and craftsmanship that tip a captain’s hat to the area’s shipbuilding past. But nothing delivers on the hyper-local notion more than the complex’s new marquee restaurant, Mystic.

The fine-dining destination, which opened last September, has a lofty ambition: to introduce locals and tourists alike to Maritime terroir through local ingredients and global techniques.

Head chef Malcolm Campbell, originally from Newmarket, Ont., is what locals might playfully call a “come from away.” Campbell made a name for himself after a decade in London, including a stint at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, and a chef de cuisine post at Toronto’s Auberge du Pommier. Before relocating to Halifax, he spent five years at Cabot Cape Breton, an acclaimed golf resort. During that time, he fell in love with Nova Scotia, spending his off-hours trout fishing on the Margaree River and tending to asparagus bushes on his own land. ›

Still, he felt the siren call of haute cuisine. “I was missing this,” he says, gesturing to the restaurant’s artisanal ceramics, pristine open kitchen, and chic marble shelves of backlit glass jars full of preserves. “This is my kind of food and style.”

Campbell’s vision? Not one, but three eight-course tasting menus that showcase the excellence and abundance of local ingredients from land, sea and air. The first menu, “Flora,” is a plant-forward vegetarian selection. “Biota” is for omnivores and includes fish, meat and game, while “Discovery” is a mélange of seasonal ingredients highlighting the chef’s creativity.

While the bulk of Mystic’s seasonal produce comes from farms like Abundant Acres, an organic farm about an hour from the city, the restaurant’s chefs also go on frequent foraging missions, scanning fields, branches and ditches for treasures like goldenrod, a flowering plant that makes a tasty vinegar. “We use that as one of our main acids,” says Campbell. “You won’t find as many lemons or limes in our kitchen as you might at other restaurants.” When adding sweetness to dishes, Campbell swaps in the darker and more robust black honey for maple syrup.

Though the menus change frequently, some dishes seem destined for mainstay status — swordfish bresaola with turnip; rack and shoulder of lamb sourced from Shobac, on the province’s south shores; and baby halibut with crispy seaweed. One of Mystic’s signature, and arguably most Instagrammable, dishes is dessert — a selection of petit fours that, depending on the day, might range from juniper pâte de fruits to sea-salt caramels and smoked bone-marrow fudge served on a moss-like bed that resembles a tide pool. Both outdoors and in, the environment supports Mystic’s ambiance and desire to take guests on a sensory journey. Designed by internationally recognized Nova Scotia architect Brian MacKay-Lyons, the restaurant is housed in the development’s wedge-shaped Rise Again building, underneath steps that lead to artist Ned Kahn’s rooftop Tidal Beacon sculpture, which lights up to chronicle the changing tides.

Inside, Mystic is a study in elegant contrasts, with materials like locally quarried sandstone slabs and metal-panelled walls in the reception area, designed to recall a

ship’s cabin. The expansive stainless steel kitchen is fully open and calls to mind house party tropes, but in an upscale, understated way. The palette is natural (think tones of driftwood, pine and ocean) with curved banquettes and custom rugs that highlight the region’s topography.

With water views on three sides, the dining room juts out into the harbour on a wharf, making the space feel yacht-like. In fact, above the open kitchen is a sculpture built into the ceiling that resembles the underside of a ship’s hull — the pièce de résistance of Toronto-based DesignAgency, the firm tasked with the restaurant’s design.

“This was our first significant project in Eastern Canada,” says Matt Davis, who founded the firm along with long-time partners Anwar Mekhayech and Allen Chan. “We didn’t want to part from the region’s history.”

As for the decision to keep the kitchen open and “showcase the artists at work,” Davis says the designers finalized that direction in close consultation with the chefs. “They were all in from the beginning with no pushback. It’s a theatre-style approach, like watching a play in real time. You’re at an upscale restaurant, but you still get that kitchen-party feel.”

Hard work, tasty food and a flair for the dramatic — “born of this place” sounds about right

THE STORYTELLER

Martin Brudnizki, the interior designer of some of the world’s top venues, crafts dreamworthy spaces that linger in memory.

Step inside the Broadwick Soho Hotel in London and you’re instantly transported into another world, one that’s as fabulous and grandiose as it is comfortable and cozy. An eclectic mélange of design inspirations ranging from the Jazz Age to English eccentricity and disco, the result is Studio 54 meets your grandmother’s townhouse, and it’s all courtesy of interior designer Martin Brudnizki.

Brudnizki’s more-is-more approach has captured the global imagination. Following a maxim of creating experiences, he’s developed an instantly recognizable style that has transformed interiors into their own unique escapes, with an emphasis on private members’ clubs, hotels, bars and restaurants, along with a select number of residences. Referred to as “the master of the grand fantasy” by one of his clients, Brudnizki manages to achieve the rare design feat of balancing tradition and modernity for an effect that’s at once both elevating and familiar.

Layering colours, textures, patterns and styles always ties back to Brudnizki’s grand idea for a particular space. In hospitality projects, whether the look is a guest’s cup of tea or not is secondary to the emotional reaction it evokes. “People are drawn to it even though it might not be their personal style because it’s an event,” Brudnizki says. “You’re taken away for a couple of hours into a different universe to just have fun, which we need to do, especially today, I think.”

Although closely associated with contemporary English design, Brudnizki was raised in Stockholm by his German mother and Polish father. He moved to London in 1990 to study interior architecture and design at the American University in London, followed by a stint as a model before he began working with artist-designer Philip Michael Wolfson. In 2000 Brudnizki struck out on his own to launch his namesake studio, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio; 25 years on, MBDS now has offices in London and New York City staffed by more than 100 architects, lighting designers, product designers and art consultants. His highprofile projects — like the Beekman Hotel in New York, Le Grand Mazarin in Paris, Splendido in Portofino and Soho Beach

House Miami have earned him innumerable accolades, including being named to the Architectural Digest 100 this past December. “You need to believe in what you’re doing. If you really believe it, eventually something will have to give,” Brudnizki says.

When it comes to realizing that sense of the fantastic, perhaps the best example in Brudnizki’s extensive portfolio is Annabel’s, the storied private members’ club on Berkeley Square, in London’s West End. When the British business tycoon Richard Caring acquired the property in 2007, he turned to Brudnizki to usher Annabel’s into its next incarnation while honouring its history as of one of the city’s first nightclubs, which had hosted the who’s who of 20th-century society, such as Frank Sinatra, Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Frequent creative collaborators, Caring and Brudnizki had previously partnered on high-profile dining projects like The Ivy and Sexy Fish, a swanky Mayfair seafood spot one reviewer described as “a restaurant designed to knock your silk socks into next week.” Annabel’s pushes Caring’s love of flora and fauna to lavish extremes — the all-pink-everything women’s restroom, its ceiling lined with handmade silk flowers, and the subterranean nightclub, a partyready homage to Milton’s “Paradise Lost”

that’s lit by full-height palm trees made of brass and glass.

“It always starts with the client,” Brudnizki says of his approach to a new project, each with its own singular narrative. “The client is the inspiration because if we’re doing a hospitality project or even if we’re doing someone’s home, it’s really for them.”

Once they’ve established what needs to be achieved through the space, the storytelling begins, he says. “Is there a story with the building? Was it used for a special use, a hundred years ago, that can be woven into the story? Next, we look at the street outside, the neighbourhood, the town or the city, and then the country. From this, you can get a lot of information and begin to weave this narrative and create something fantastical.”

Torontonians don’t have far to travel to enter the Brudnizki universe. Café Boulud, chef Daniel Boulud’s French restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel, was given the MBDS treatment in 2015. Ten years in, its warm, smart ambiance is as delightful as ever, thanks in no small part to Brudnizki’s overall rejection of design trends. “I don’t really follow trends because it’s the story that’s important. Our projects can take up to 10 years to fulfill, so if you [go after a trend], it’s going to be out of fashion. I always want to create something that is a classic that’s going to stand the test of time.”

THIS PAGE: (top) Bold flora and fauna motifs abound at private members’ club Annabel’s in London. (Above) The all-pink-everything women’s restroom at Annabel’s. Photos: courtesy of MBDS.
“The client is the inspiration because, if we’re doing a hospitality project or even if we’re doing someone’s home, it’s really for them.”

Brudnizki was also behind Drake One Fifty, in Toronto’s Financial District — dining-focused outpost of Jeff Stober’s game-changing Drake Hotel on West Queen West. A reimagining of dining out for the Bay Street crowd, Drake One Fifty was a major downtown draw from 2013 to 2022. Through a collaboration with The Drake’s in-house design team, it combined Brudnizki’s signature colourful, sumptuous style with hip made-in-Toronto touches, including a Brothers Dressler-designed wood pergola and a mural and hand-drawn art by Rajni Perera at the Drake Minibar. That attention to detail is critical in any MBDS project, whether it’s through a lampshade that’s as charming inside and out or through playful embellishment.

“What I do think is important is achieving that sense of balance,” Brudnizki says. To that end, in 2015 Brudnizki launched And Objects, a collection of furniture and home décor intended to balance functionality with beauty. With a retail shop at Newson’s Yard, a design hub in central London, And Objects creates an opportunity for admirers of the MBDS style to bring a piece or two of that flair into their homes.

As his studio celebrates the milestone of its 25th birthday this year, Brudnizki seems ready to relax. With six hotels completed in the last 18 months, he’s fine with having a quiet year ahead. “I believe that more is not less,” Brudnizki says. “Be brave, make a big move. I think that’s just so important because you feel joy, you feel happy.”

A LEGACY OF STYLE

For these esteemed design companies, enduring success is a family affair. By Jeremy Freed

Nienkämper, Scavolini and Roche Bobois are three of the most trusted names in interior design, each with a distinctive aesthetic point of view, an archive of iconic creations and a reputation for top-tier quality. While their specialties are wide-ranging — from sculptural seating to innovative office furniture to sleek modular kitchens and bathrooms — these companies share a unique common thread: family. Decades after they were founded, these brands retain a commitment to family-led stewardship that has helped them stay grounded while growing into global design leaders.

“When you’ve been born into a business like ours, core values and vision are instilled in you [via] osmosis. Our foundation was strong, thanks to both our parents,” says Rebecca Nienkämper, vice-president at the office furniture specialist firm founded by her father, Klaus. When Klaus and his wife, Beatrix, opened the company’s first

furniture showroom, on Toronto’s King Street East, in 1968, there was nothing else like it in Canada. Nienkämper’s combination of high-quality Canadian fabrication and Bauhaus-inspired designs quickly proved to be a winning formula and helped the firm grow into one of North America’s most recognized office furniture designers today.

“Make a quality product, respond to clients’ needs while maintaining design integrity, and be nice,” says Ottilie Nienkämper, the company’s marketing director, describing her father’s business philosophy. These founding tenets, along with a commitment to doing as much as possible in-house, remain Nienkämper’s guiding principles and help it stand out from the competition after more than 50 years in business. “Nienkämper outsources very little, which gives us greater control over the entire process,” Ottilie adds. “This is pretty unique in our industry.” ›

“When you’ve been born into a business like ours, core values and vision are instilled in you [via] osmosis. Our foundation was strong thanks to both our parents.”
“This family-based approach is key to our success and our international growth.”

Italian kitchen specialist Scavolini shares a similar origin story, and likewise credits its continued success to its founders, Valter and Elvino Scavolini, who began producing modular kitchens in Pesaro, Italy, in 1961.

Now in his 80s, Valter remains an active part of the business even though his daughter, Fabiana Scavolini who joined the company in 1995, has taken over as the company’s CEO. Alongside her brother, Gian Marco, and cousins Emanuela and Alberto, Fabiana is dedicated to running Scavolini with the same passion and enthusiasm as Valter and Elvino, particularly when it comes to its long-standing commitment

to Italian craftsmanship. “A cornerstone of Scavolini’s identity is its dedication to the principles of ‘Made in Italy,’” says Fabiana.

“We continually invest in our production system, nurturing it with responsibility and foresight, guided by the entrepreneurial values that have shaped us from the start.”

Fabiana further credits Scavolini’s success to her father and uncle’s savvy decision to outsource production while focusing on research, development and marketing in-house — a strategy that still guides the company’s operations today.

“Producing everything in-house would have made it impossible to meet demand,”

she says. “Instead, we opted for a lean production model supported by a supply chain of specialized partners — a groundbreaking move for the industry then.”

Now, with an expansive network of showrooms, from Toronto to Shanghai, and a growing range of living, bathroom and outdoor collections, the Scavolini family’s time-tested strategy is helping their brand prosper. “We believe [Scavolini] must be nurtured with responsibility and vision, remaining true to the ethical and entrepreneurial values instilled in us by my father,” Fabiana says. “He continues to be a reference point for all of us.”

At Roche Bobois, the Parisian brand known for expressive yet functional home furnishings — like the Bubble sofa and the Legend bookcase — family has always been an important part of its business model. In 1960, after a visit to a design fair in Copenhagen, brothers François and Philippe Roche and Patrick and JeanClaude Chouchan launched what would become one of France’s leading importers of Scandinavian modern furniture. Following its initial success, the brand established a new visual identity that married the clean lines and functionality of modernism with a French sense of frivolity. “The Roche and Chouchan families always promoted innovation, creativity and boldness,” explains Eric Amourdedieu, executive director of Roche Bobois SA. “They wanted to produce furniture that is more than just functional but [also] embodies elegance and French art de vivre. ”

While the company has grown into a global empire with dozens of showrooms worldwide from Sydney, Australia, to Saudi Arabia, it continues to uphold the founders’ vision under the leadership of Jean-Eric Chouchan and Nicolas Roche. “Being a family-owned company has enabled Roche Bobois to nurture a long-term vision and a deep attachment to its core values,” Amourdedieu says. “It has given us the freedom to make bold decisions, to invest in innovation and partnerships with renowned designers, all while staying true to our roots. This family-based approach is key to our success and our international growth.”

It’s telling that, while almost every aspect of doing business has changed since the 1960s, the vision of Roche Bobois’ founders remain a primary source of guidance and inspiration more than 60 years later. The same is true at Nienkämper and Scavolini, both of which continue to be guided by principles established by their own respective founders decades ago. This isn’t the only thing that sets these companies apart, of course, but it suggests that – in business as in life – knowing where you came from is just as important as knowing where you’re going.

TAKING FLIGHT

Rising Plains Cree designer Jontay Kahm sets a bold new vision for fashion design with his sculpturally inventive couture.

Emerging designers often say they admire fashion provocateurs like Iris van Herpen and the late Lee Alexander McQueen — creatives whose boundary-pushing feats of craft have left indelible marks on the collective psyche. Yet most of these young visionaries singing their praises have a long way to go in honing the technical skills — and singular design “voice” — that sets such fashion figures apart from the rest of the industry.

And this is why Saskatchewan-born Plains Cree fashion designer Jontay Kahm is so remarkable. At 28, the New York–based talent has evolved from sketching music video inspirations in his bedroom to winning the Emerging Designer of the Year at the 2024 Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) and staging a fashion show at the Getty Center in Los Angeles last September.

Kahm’s oeuvre includes statement pieces like the ‘Heaven on Earth’ dress (a cocktail dress sewn with midnight blue feathers and an exoskeletal beaded embellishment) and ‘Sunsets’ (a full-length gown comprised of dyed pink-to-orange fringe). Both from Kahm’s Ethereal Realms collection, which he showed at the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) fashion show in September 2024, these designs evoke fantastical avant-garde fashion.

Kahm’s interest in fashion design began

nearly two decades ago when he saw Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” video in his early teens. Growing up with no internet on the Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation reserve, he was inspired by Gaga’s use of Alexander McQueen’s clothing and overall alien aesthetic.

“Everything about it was just so otherworldly to me and I wanted to be a part of it,” recalls Kahm. “Growing up in Saskatchewan, I didn’t see anything glamorous at all. It was all farmland, a very rural vibe, and I felt like a fish out of water.”

Kahm spent over $60 a month of his teenage allowance on magazines like Vogue to keep up with design trends, all the while drawing each look he saw Lady Gaga wear. “I observed her Fame Monster era, learning more about the designers that she wore and about her stylist, Nicola Formichetti,” Kahm says. “And then lo and behold, I was drawing. At first, I was copying Gaga’s looks, and then, later, I started to make my own designs out of boredom.”

That inclination grew into an attempt at making dresses on a children’s sewing machine (though Kahm was still very young — his first fashion show turn was during a student talent show). “It didn’t even have a foot pedal,” he recalls. As a self-taught designer, he initially kept his creations private, only sharing them with close friends and his father, the late visual modern artist, Jeff Kahm. “He always wanted me to be an artist and he got his wish even though it wasn’t through painting,” Kahm says. “When I first told him about fashion designing, he was very supportive and we started looking at schools together.”

Kahm had set his sights on renowned institutions like Parsons School of Design and Central St Martins but faced financial constraints, at least in the beginning. Kahm eventually enrolled in the studio arts program at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Sante Fe, New Mexico, where his father taught art. It was there that the younger Kahm crossed paths with a colleague and friend of his father’s, professor Amber-Dawn Bear Robe. One of Kahm’s instructors, she would become instrumental in igniting his career.

Originally from Alberta and now based in Santa Fe, Bear Robe remembers being “completely blown away” after first seeing Kahm’s designs. She has since staged several runway shows featuring Kahm’s collections, including at the Getty Center’s Indigenous Futurism fashion event and all of SWAIA’s catwalk presentations.

Included were Kahm’s Ethereal Realms collection with its Christian motifs (crosses

and three roses representing the Holy Trinity) and his debut collection, Regalian Bodies, which explored eternal life and absence — themes that were heavy on Kahm’s mind when his father suddenly passed away while Kahm was still studying at IAIA.

A maestro of materiality, Kahm liberally uses embellishments — beading, feathers and ribbons — to augment the drama of each garment while honouring his Indigenous ancestry. The extravagant Transcendence dress from the Regalian Bodies collection, for example, is crafted from feathers and fringe and features a double bustle detail

inspired by male traditional fancy dress.

Kham notes that it was while completing his BFA in studio arts at IAIA that he began to “really hone in” on bringing his culture, and the materiality of it, into his work. Inspiration came from being surrounded by Native people and Native culture — “the food, the imagery, the music.” IAIA lacked a formal fashion program, so Kahm requested to fill that niche with a collection inspired by Cree regalia — vibrant colours, protruding feathers and swaths of fringe. “I researched how to use feathers, beads and ribbons that way,” says Kahm.

“It took me almost 10 years to find a recognizable aesthetic that showed what I was going to be known for.”

“He has a unique design language unlike any other that I’ve seen thus far,” says Bear Robe. “It’s amazing that he’s able to grow and to see his vision come together, particularly in his explorations of powwow culture for the Cree people. And the way his vision is becoming a wonderful manifestation of contemporary couture fashion is rare. I’m very lucky to be witnessing his growth.”

Kahm’s opulent collections ultimately impressed Parsons faculty member Sariah Park, who offered him a full scholarship for a master’s program after seeing his runway debut at SWAIA. This is the reason Kahm says he would do whatever Bear Robe wants him to do. “I trust her judgment of what she wants for me.”

Kahm, who will be presenting his thesis collection at Parsons this fall, reflects on his trajectory. “It took me almost 10 years to find a recognizable aesthetic that showed what I was going to be known for. My work from 10 years ago does not look like the work I’m doing right now.” Kahm’s fans and community — many of them are based in the U.S. Southwest, as Kahm had moved to Albuquerque to join his father — are waiting with bated breath, same as last fall, when Kahm was honoured by CAFA. “I didn’t think I would win and I didn’t

have a speech ready,” Kahm says. “All the other candidates were so good, and I’d overheard them speaking about business and manufacturing at a nominee lunch. I just thought there’s no way I would win — I make all my stuff in my bedroom.”

This private space is where Kahm also continues to dream. He says he would love to become the creative director at Alexander McQueen, and perhaps be a guest designer for the Jean Paul Gaultier collaborative couture collections. The amplified budgets for these brand positions, Kahm notes, would allow his voluminous designs to reach even loftier heights.

He also notes that Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone wearing one of his designs to a premiere was another recent career high. She donned the ‘Migration’ dress from his Regalian Bodies collection, a design whose name was drawn from the experience he and his father had in moving to the United States from Canada to follow their American dream.

“I always envision [my work] in galleries and museums, on the red carpet, in magazines and music videos,” Kahm says. “That’s the kind of design I really liked looking at growing up, and that’s why I create the pieces the way they are.”

POP PAINTS

Over his decades-long career, artist Donald Robertson has morphed from inside-fashion-world darling to popculture commentator, making everyone from the Kelces to Snoop Dogg fair game for his creative lens. Meet the “Andy Warhol of Instagram.” By Yuki Hayashi

Artist and creative director Donald Robertson has built an illustrious career out of capturing the Zeitgeist His paintings pair fast and furious brush strokes of exuberant colour with a laser-sharp focus on the intersection of fashion and pop culture. A master of motif, Robertson generates graphic signatures riff on dripping lips, sardonic designer logos, galloping horses and stylized cowboys, and his work has an #iykyk vibe that conjures a milieu of fashion VIPs, effortless affluence and iconic Americana.

“It’s almost like I’m art paparazzi: I like to capture something that’s happening right now,” says Robertson, a prolific social media poster who has collaborated with prestigious fashion and beauty brands, upscale department stores and boutiques, and top newsstand magazines on a range of endeavours, from lipsticks and capsule collections to pop-ups.

Last year, Robertson’s paparazzi paintings included besties/Olympic commentators Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart, athlete/ tabloid regular Travis Kelce, attentiongetting pop star Harry Styles, plus a mix of royals — of both the Windsor and the Hamptons sort.

Collectors like Beyoncé (or the fans who snap up his work practically as soon as it appears on his Instagram) can’t get enough

of it, and neither can the artist himself, a Canadian who now lives in Dallas, after stints in Toronto, New York, Korea, Japan, China and Los Angeles.

“I never wanted to be a starving artist,” notes Robertson, who started his career in the late 1980s after dropping out of Toronto’s Ontario College of Art to work with then up-and-coming MAC Cosmetics.

At MAC, the young artist developed creative concepts that led to his love of iconography. “That’s where the lips came from,” he says of the glam motif he has slapped on countless canvases — a car, even a building exterior in Nashville.

It also honed his instinct for finding the next new thing. “I got my green card, moved to New York and started in publishing next — and that’s where the celebrity obsession came from. My generation, we were putting celebrities on magazine covers, which was, at the time, unthinkable,” says the father of five and a former creative director at top U.S. fashion magazines like Marie Claire, Glamour and Cosmopolitan.

“I was in publishing for a long time and I got addicted to news leads. It was just something that was drilled into us. If something was news, newsworthy or new, it would hit. And that’s always been something that I’ve liked to incorporate into my art,” he explains. ›

OPPOSITE PAGE: Canadian artist Donald Robertson was raised in Toronto, but now calls Dallas, Texas his home. “Clinique loves Donald”, collab portrait. Photo: Brad Lansill.

Recently, that included chronicling pop culture’s unofficial Family of the Year. It all began with a painting of Donna Kelce (mother of football and podcast stars Travis and Jason Kelce) as she spectated at Superbowl LVII, where her two sons played on opposing teams.

“I remember thinking at the time, This woman is incredible. And I painted her on a cereal box and called it ‘Special K.’ It was just something that captured a moment. She was new to my people, my followers, but likeable…so I painted her. Then she immediately reached out to get it. The next thing you know, she sent me a picture of her holding the box,” says Robertson.

This social media connection continued through the year. “I sort of befriended the family. And when Jason was made [a finalist in People magazine’s] Sexiest Man Alive, they called me to do a painting of him to tease him; it created this whole news thing. Then Taylor Swift showed up and it was just “Game on.” It just exploded. So, it was a series of newsworthy things that became this really, really fun year of documenting the craziness that was the Kelce family and the Swifts.”

Robertson’s visual hot takes have earned him 227,000 Instagram followers, many of whom are eager to snap up his art, much of which is made quickly and sells quickly.

This immediacy — and the direct line to tastemakers, collectors and fans — is something Robertson has valued ever since his oldest daughter convinced him to grab an iPhone and venture onto Instagram.

“Next thing you know, I was having back-and-forths with Carine Roitfeld and working with Colette,” recalls Robertson, referring, respectively, to the influential former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris and the chic Parisian boutique.

“Instagram made the world very small and very accessible. It was wonderful and I got addicted to that community. It’s changed and become a big giant beast, but there’s still community. I’m like an old dad and Marc Jacobs is popping onto my Instagram and liking stuff. “When I was in [print] magazines, [that] would’ve been virtually impossible.”

“When Snoop Dogg showed up at the Olympics at the equestrian event in that tuxedo suit, I was just like, Where’s my paint? Where’s my paint?”

While the artist is far from obscure now — you know you’ve arrived when Assouline publishes an eponymous tome on your life and work — Robertson relishes the gatekeeping that social media dismantled. “When I was young and hustling, I had a pain-in-the-ass portfolio that I had to drag to Europe. I had letters of introduction that I had to hide when I was going through customs. And then people would cancel meetings…and by the time you finally got to meet with somebody, you were just so frustrated if it didn’t go well. Those days are gone. It’s been a great equalizer and it’s been very exciting,” says the artist who uses social media to showcase, and solicit, new work. (“I’m paying for college tuition with this stuff,” he quips.)

Over the years, Robertson’s selfdiagnosed “trend FOMO” has driven him

across America and Asia where he has designed global marketing campaigns — (he was senior vice president creative director at Estée Lauder for several years), collaborated with renowned artists and brands and honed his art. But Dallas may be where he takes a breather…at least for a little while.

Social media is now his favoured career conduit. “It’s a way of doing my corporate job and incorporating my art at the same time. It’s a nice overlap. Also, it’s really hard to hustle content for Instagram. But if you can paint, it makes it so much easier. I don’t have to go to exotic locations to get pictures. I can just paint them. I can literally create content all day long in my studio,” he explains.

Of course, the next paintable meme always beckons. As an example, Robertson recounts

the story behind his Internet-famous Snoop and Martha Stewart series.

“When Snoop Dogg showed up at the [2024 Paris Summer] Olympics, at the equestrian event, in that tuxedo suit, I was just like, Where’s my paint? Where’s my paint? Maybe I’ll just do the Olympic circles as smoke rings. Oh my God, that painting sold so fast. It was unbelievable.

“Then I did a picture of Martha with Snoop: the ultimate odd couple. It was just so sweet,” says Robertson, who in December posted an Instagram photo of Stewart holding one of his sold-out Snoop paintings.

After a four-decade-long career, Robertson knows to amplify a news hook when he sees one. “That’s the kind of thing that creates community through your art. But it also makes something irresistible. You know what I mean?”

Taking cues from improvisational jazz, Sotheby’s auctioneer Phyllis Kao elevates the role of presenter to enigmatic performer, attracting new fans online. By Kristen Vinakmens

It was the auction that reverberated throughout the world. Apex the Stegosaurus, a rare 161-million-yearold dinosaur skeleton, sold at Sotheby’s last July for a record-breaking US$44.6 million after an intense 15-minute bidding war. But it wasn’t just the fossil or its historic sale price (more than 11 times the estimate) that made waves — Sotheby’s auctioneer Phyllis Kao, as emcee, presided over it all. And her star-turn performance — streamed live online and on TikTok for millions of viewers — almost eclipsed the mammoth skeleton. ›

Sotheby’s auctioneer Phyllis Kao has become known for her engaging performance at the podium as well as her personal style, elegance and signature elaborate updo. Photo: Sothebys.

With her skillful display — a graceful wave of the hand, a coy smile, an engaged lean-in towards the audience — Kao courted phone bidders to raise their prices ever higher. Dressed in a tailored silver grey Armani suit jacket and sporting an elegant updo worthy of a 1940s film star, Kao maintained a calm and collected demeanour as she interjected with lighthearted comedic quips like “They’re just numbers at this point” or “Would you like to try a smaller bite?” The thrilling spectacle seemed effortless in Kao’s hands as she directed the flurry of bids until the final gavel smash and declaration that Apex was “Sold!” were met with rounds of applause.

Kao, a VP of client strategy at Sotheby’s in New York, became a social media sensation overnight, which admittedly surprised her. The video of the stegosaurus auction alone had more than 11 million TikTok views, other auction videos featuring Kao garner millions, and she has received heaps of praise from fans commenting that she is a “legend”

and that “Phyllis Kao is an icon.”

“I don’t have TikTok, so I had no idea that was happening,” says Kao. “And I think it’s a blessing that I’m not keeping track of that. It’s not what I do. But I thought it was really interesting that the TikTok generation is taking such an interest in auctions. I think that’s very positive for our industry.”

While Sotheby’s live-streamed its auctions before the pandemic, its evening auctions — more formal affairs featuring rare, big-budget lots — have evolved into elaborate productions similar to “live TV,” according to Kao. These event-style presentations now reach millions online and on social media. Kao’s following highlights the essential performance aspect of auctioneering, something she likens to being an improvisational jazz performer. “An auction is not scripted, of course,” she says. “You don’t know what will happen. So, you have to improvise.”

Like many in her industry, Kao has a performing arts background. As a teenager

“The role of an auctioneer is multi-faceted. You are a master of ceremonies. You are a host or hostess, the face of the company. You are a salesman. You are a performer.”

she studied classical violin, something she thought she would pursue professionally. But she was also fascinated with art, spurred by her grandfather, who collected Chinese works. In college, Kao studied Chinese art and artifacts, with a focus on Buddhist art, which remains one of her favourites in the art world. “Tang dynasty, Buddhist sculpture, you just can’t get better than that,” she says.

Kao got her start in the auction world with a temporary role at a small auction house in the Bay Area, California, where she grew up. She had planned to further her education by studying classics at Columbia but was offered a full-time job as a cataloguer in decorative arts at the house, which had acquired a trove of Chinese artworks.

With no training, Kao hosted her first auction (or, in auction parlance, “took a sale”) at the age of 23 and, from then on, she was hooked. “I thought: Wait a minute. This is a job? You’re just spending other people’s money and looking at beautiful things for them,” she says. “And I liked the field. I liked the industry. Every day is different. You meet all sorts of people. You’re surprised daily by who you meet and what you find and I just kept working.”

From there, she went on to bigger and bigger auction houses and ultimately landed a role as a specialist in Chinese art

at Sotheby’s in New York. While she’s been an auctioneer for over a decade, Kao had to audition to conduct sales. Kao nailed her audition, with one exception: her long hair kept hitting the microphone as she moved. Hugh Hildesley, head of auctioneers emeritus at Sotheby’s, asked that she wear her hair up so as not to distract from the presentation. Kao styled her hair in an elaborate updo for the second audition, with coils of hair framing her face. “It went off really well,” she recalls. “So, I started doing it for every sale. And it very quickly became my signature look.” Kao says she looks so different when

wearing her auction hairstyle versus her dayto-day straight long hair that people often don’t recognize her on the street.

But preparing for an auction goes beyond mere style choices. For an all-important evening sale, for example, Kao has to know the works in question “inside and out,” which requires extensive research. Regardless of the type of sale she’s conducting — whether evening or day sales, which cross price points and categories, from wines to watches — Kao is meticulous about studying an item’s provenance and significance. “I want to understand why it’s a coveted work. And

I want to be able to get into the psychology of my buyer as much as I can.”

She adds, “The role of an auctioneer is multifaceted. You are a master of ceremonies. You are a host or hostess, the face of the company. You are a salesman. You are a performer. It’s quite psychological and you have to stay on top of business decisions. There’s numbers and there’s a lot of quick thinking.”

Same as in liveTV, evening auction sales have a production crew on hand and a tech run-through ahead of the proceedings. “With that high production quality, there are a lot of people who watch auctions now

who wouldn’t have before,” says Kao. “For an auctioneer, there’s more to keep track of because you’re [presenting] live to a bigger audience and there’s more pressure.” Kao’s background in performance has helped her stay grounded and connect with an audience by projecting confidence and presence. “When I was a violinist, I was on stage roughly every two weeks performing. Nothing can be as difficult as playing solo violin on stage. The performing arts background certainly helped give me strong nerves.” Still, to get in the proper mindset ahead of an all-important evening auction,

Kao practices meditation to feel grounded. And as for that stegosaurus, it was purchased by billionaire hedge-fund manager and collector Kenneth C. Griffin and is now on view at the American Museum of Natural History in New York for the next few years. The sale, though, will remain a career highlight for Kao. “That record will probably be tough to beat in terms of hammer price.”  While Chinese art will always hold a special place in her heart, Kao delights in the variety of artworks and precious items she encounters at Sotheby’s. “I do love it all. I’m thoroughly an auction person.”

Kao meticulously studies each work before a sale, so she knows them ‘inside and out.” Photo: Sothebys.

A GRAND BUDAPEST REVIVAL

Steeped in history and culture, the capital of Hungary boasts Old World charm and modern cosmopolitan flair. By Dobrina Zhekova

The ornamental molding on the whitewashed façade of the neoclassical building on 3 Bem József tér in Budapest hints at its 19th-century roots. Although the structure sits in perfect harmony with its surroundings on this quiet street across the Danube — grandiose exteriors are standard in a city once known as the Paris of the East — its interior tells a much different story. Inside the Kimpton BEM Budapest (one of the city’s newest luxury hotels, housed in a former mansion), Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ sophisticated interiors blend whimsical elements of Hungarian folklore with modern details. Think sleek egg-shaped desks and a vibrant colour palette of electric blues, emerald greens and rich reds. The hotel is but one example of Budapest’s growing appeal among travellers as the city transforms into a bustling hub of modern culture and cuisine at the heart of Europe.

“With its vibrant cultural scene, historic charm and emerging luxury market, Budapest has become a beacon for discerning investors and luxury travellers alike,” says Attila AE Domby, the hotel’s general manager, calling the Hungarian capital “the crown jewel of Central Europe, where timeless architecture meets modern luxury.”

Budapest is one of the Old Continent’s most exciting destinations, with its centuriesold cityscape of grand castles, palaces and UNESCO World Heritage sites coexisting alongside the modern identity of a city bursting with creative energy. Located along the banks of the Danube River, Hungary’s capital comprises two distinct parts: Buda and Pest. Buda is known for its hilly terrain and historical sights, including royal landmarks, while Pest is vibrant and lively with its hip ruin bars, Michelin-rated restaurants, luxury hotels and designer stores.

The Kimpton, meanwhile, joins a crowded hospitality scene, where world-class luxury brands such as the Four Seasons, Anantara and the Ritz-Carlton have been present for years, adding to the city’s appeal with jetsetters from around the globe.

Another recent addition is W Budapest, which opened its stylish doors in 2023 opposite the city’s stately opera house in the former Drechsler Palace on Andrássy Avenue, steps away from designer boutiques of brands like Gucci, Zegna, Max Mara, Moncler and Breitling. The 151-room hotel pampers its guests with an underground spa, sumptuous interiors inspired by the building’s ballet heritage and contemporary Asian flavours at Nightingale by Beefbar, its sleek Art Nouveau eatery. ›

Spa culture runs deep in Budapest, as its famous thermal baths have played a major role in the city’s history. In the early centuries, the Romans were the first to discover the healing powers of the area’s hot springs, even calling it “Aquincum” after the Latin word for water. Then, the Ottomans, renowned for their love of public baths, developed hammam-style baths in the 16th and 17th centuries. The city’s reputation as Europe’s spa hub was cemented by elaborate Art Nouveau and Neo-classical bathhouses built in the 19th century as Budapest served as the second capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

For a modern-day take on Budapest’s wellness culture, visit the upscale Budapest

Institute’s Omorovicza Boutique & Spa. The skincare brand, founded in 2006 and adored by celebrities like Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, draws on the healing powers of mineral-rich Hungarian thermal waters and mud. Its flagship institute has an intimate spa hidden in the back (the front serves as a store and a check-in area) with a relaxing lounge clad in a palette of neutrals and soft terracotta hues that feels like a wellness cocoon amidst the bustle of one of Budapest’s busiest thoroughfares.

For a deeper understanding of Budapest’s cosmopolitan spirit, consider staying at a boutique hotel like Hotel Rum. Nestled on a quiet street steps away from Egyetem Square (University Square), this six-storey

neoclassical building was designed by the same architect who completed the Hungarian Parliament Building. It houses 40 guest rooms with contemporary furnishings, giving off a modern urban vibe dreamed up by a team of local designers. The rooftop bar is a popular hangout spot for cocktail lovers and rewards patrons with panoramic city views. And while the rooftop delivers a visual treat, the ground floor restaurant will delight your taste buds. Salt, a cozy space with only a handful of tables, whitewashed walls and arched ceilings, made its debut into the world of Michelinstarred restaurants in 2021, the same year the prestigious guide launched its inaugural edition in Hungary. Since then, Salt’s

THIS PAGE: (left) The Kimpton Hotel interiors, designed by Marcel Wanders, incorporate elements of Hungarian folklore with modern details. Photo: courtesy of Kimpton BEM Budapest. “intricate, exquisitely constructed dishes,” as the Michelin guide describes them, have gained the restaurant numerous awards, including for best chef. Szilárd Tóth, the mastermind behind Salt’s 14-course tasting menu, incorporates herbs and plants that Tóth often forages himself, paying tribute to Hungary’s culinary traditions with a special focus on sustainability (the restaurant was awarded a Michelin Green Star).

But Salt is just one piece of Budapest’s culinary puzzle. The city’s dining scene is undergoing a veritable renaissance, with young chefs experimenting with traditional recipes and flavours and adapting them to modern palates.

Tucked in a modern residential building, Stand, another Michelin-approved establishment, elevates Hungarian gastronomy, demonstrating its versatility. If you’re going to try the country’s most famous dish, Gulyás soup — tender chunks of beef in a hearty paprika-infused broth — then have it at a two-star Michelin restaurant that doesn’t compromise with fresh ingredients and authentic flavours.

But great meals don’t necessarily require a Michelin star in Budapest. In Hoppá! Bistro, on the lively October Street downtown, 30-year-old chef Márton Irtó puts on a gastronomic show appreciated by tourists and locals alike. If you’re on a quest to discover Hungarian cuisine, then an order of chicken paprikash is a must. However, the foie gras served with challah, and the duck breast with shiitake mushrooms and plum are an excellent indulgence, too. The restaurant is a few blocks from the Danube, so you can walk off the meal along the scenic river promenade. And speaking of one of the city’s most prominent natural landmarks, Felix Kitchen & Bar on the Buda side of the city, has front-row vistas of the river, best enjoyed with a glass

of rare Hungarian red from the restaurant’s expertly curated wine list by Tamás Czinki, the country’s first master sommelier. Budapest’s transformation as a creative haven for artists has also left its mark on the city’s landscape. Galleries and multidisciplinary art spaces catering to up-and-coming creatives are popping up across the city, drawing local and international talent. There’s a sense of camaraderie among Budapest-based artists, explains Márton Nemes, one of the leading contemporary voices in the city. Nemes, who represented Hungary at the Venice Biennale this year and recently launched his own collaborative art studio in Budapest, says that many artists use these spaces to meet and discuss their artistic ideas.

“Every Hungarian artist is unique, drawing up a new type of narrative,” Nemes adds, noting that artists here are forging their path without emulating established trends. His vibrant abstract works often make cameos in some of the city’s most buzzed-about galleries and museums, like acb Gallery and Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art.

Art enthusiasts should also put Einspach & Czapolai Fine Art on their Budapest list. This relative newcomer, founded in 2021, occupies a brightly lit space on the ground floor of a historic palace, focuses on postwar modernism and represents up-andcoming and established Hungarian talents.

One thing is evident. As Nemes points out, in Budapest the distance between the audience and the artists is getting shorter and shorter. As the city continues to reinvent itself, it shows that it has so much more to offer than just romantic architecture and quaint coffee shops. And there’s no doubt that Hungary’s capital will continue to capture hearts and minds for years to come.

“With its vibrant cultural scene, historic charm and emerging luxury market, Budapest has become a beacon for discerning investors and luxury travellers alike.”

LINGERING IN LAGUNA

How to spend a few art-filled days in the seaside enclave of Laguna Beach, California. By Chelsee Lowe

The coastal California town of Laguna Beach, located about 55 miles south of frenetic Los Angeles, is the antidote to a hurried or overstimulated life. Lingering in its quiet coves or trekking one of its scenic trails brings fresh perspective. There’s a levity to being here, and to communing with the natural beauty all around.

More than six million out-of-towners explore Laguna Beach annually, which is a Goliath count compared to its residential population of 22,332. They come for the Golden State trifecta — sea, surf, and sun — but they also come for the art. Plein air artists have been drawn to the scenery here since the late 1800s. In 1918 the community’s first art gallery opened — now the Laguna Beach Art Museum and the steward of thousands of works depicting California geography and culture, as well as a venue for robust art programming for all ages.

Options for immersive art experiences abound in this creative community. Here’s how to spend an art-meets-outdoors weekend in Laguna almost any time of the year.

GALLERY HOPPING

California’s famed Pacific Coast Highway cruises right through Laguna Beach — the sand and the sea to the west, and the city (and verdant San Joaquin Hills) to the east. Whiling away an hour or three on iconic Main Beach is a must, but you should also take a stroll into Laguna’s charming downtown, which is dotted with dozens of fine art galleries. The galleries welcome wanderers almost any day of the week, but they come alive on Laguna’s First Thursday Art Walk. Demonstrations and live music play up the art at this free evening event, which has been a local tradition since 1998.

AFFAIRS TO REMEMBER

In addition to daily opportunities to see the creative side of Laguna Beach, renowned annual arts festivals take place here. At Laguna Art-A-Fair, the Sawdust Art Festival and the Festival of the Arts, nearly every art medium you can name is represented. Live glass-blowing and painting

demos are not to be missed, and there are hands-on art education classes for creators of all ages and stages, should you want to throw a bowl on a pottery wheel or paint your own watercolour still life. This invitation to participate is part of what makes the arts events in Laguna Beach so special — you’re not just a spectator; you can be an artist, too.

PRESERVATION-MINDED

Running parallel to Laguna’s art history is a decades-long fight to preserve local natural resources. Fervent citizens helped found the Laguna Greenbelt in the 1960s, protecting 22,000 acres of greenspace from development. Notably, the adjacent ocean waters are also preserved as a marine reserve, so instead of busy harbours or piers, you will find teeming tide pools and wave-riding surfers.

All this is to say that a deep respect for Mother Nature is part of the DNA

of Laguna Beach, and so, spending time outdoors is a must. A favourite nature stop is Crystal Cove State Park, set just three miles north of Main Beach. I tread lightly on this natural rocky shoreline anytime I can visit, spying on sea stars, sea anemones, limpets and more. Check the local tide chart, though, as high tide makes the pools inaccessible. Another popular low-tide sight is the Victoria Beach Pirate Tower, originally built in 1926.

Then dig into Laguna’s greenspace and pick a trail that suits your hiking skills. The aptly named Top of the World Trail is a short (2.5 miles) but intense (almost 900 feet in elevation gain) and delivers excellent sea views. For a more moderate experience, consider El Moro Canyon Short Loop, paired with a tide pool excursion, as it’s in Crystal Cove State Park. Or choose from dozens of trails in neighbouring Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.

“Laguna Beach is the antidote to a hurried life, offering fresh perspectives through its quiet coves and scenic trails—a perfect blend of art, nature, and tranquility.”

HELLO, OPERATOR

While a day on the sand is requisite in Laguna Beach, it’s also a treat to see the shoreline from the waves. To do that in comfort (and safety), connect with a local operator likse La Vida Laguna. A kayak tour will get your adrenaline pumping and give you a chance to watch migrating blue or grey whales, dolphins and/or sea lions from closer up. Stand-up paddleboard tours and surf lessons are other great ways to play like a local. For private or group

surf lessons helmed by expert instructors who know Laguna’s waves well, check out Thalia Surf Shop.

WHERE TO STAY

Like Disneyland (which is just 25 miles away from Laguna Beach), Surf & Sand Resort has innumerable loyalists, which is understandable, given that this luxury property sits right on the beach. My personal hotel pick, though, is The Ranch at Laguna Beach, a 97-room gem tucked

into Aliso Canyon. Guests here can easily access the sand via a sweet meandering path, but they can also indulge in the serenity of being surrounded by wildflowerclad hillsides. The very pretty nine-hole golf course is another plus, as is the on-site farm, with its scheduled tours and seasonal fresh produce grown for The Ranch’s cornerstone restaurant, Harvest.

Too many choices? Keep calm like a surfer waiting for a wave — likely Laguna will lure you back for a repeat visit.

Content they want. Finally.

(UN)FADING BEAUTY

Artists who work with flowers embrace the potential, and poignant impermanence, of leaf, stem and bloom. By Lisa Mesbur

AZUMA MAKOTO

Large-scale surreal floral arrangements are the hallmark of Azuma, a Tokyo-based artist who has been creating conceptual “botanical sculptures” since 2005. From encasing vibrant blooms in ice, in Frozen Flowers , to launching a bonsai tree and a bouquet into space in Exobiotanica , Azuma’s work explores the timeless beauty of flowers while hinting at the enormous impact of human intervention on the natural world. azumamakoto.com

THIERRY BOUTEMY

Engaged in a self-professed love affair with flowers since childhood, Boutemy has worked as a floral artist since the late 1990s. His aesthetic — inspired by the unstructured, uncontrived nature of w ildflowers — captured the attention of Sofia Coppola (she commissioned him to design the floral arrangements for her film Marie Antoinette) as well as fashion label Lanvin and chocolatier Pierre Marcolini. thierryboutemy.com

MARK COLLE

Fashion and flowers are a perfect pairing, as evidenced by the work of this Antwerp floral artist. A frequent collaborator, Colle creates immersive installations that serve as a reminder that blooms need not last longer than a runway presentation to make an impact. Last fall, he branched out with floral arrangements inspired by pictorial art, which were featured at a four-day pop-up at Antwerp’s Galarie Raf Van Severen. @markcolle on Instagram

LISA WAUD

Inspired by the space between life and decay, Detroit-based Waud creates site-specific, large-scale installations using botanical materials. In Flower House, Waud led a group of 37 designers to fill a derelict house in Hamtramck, Michigan, with blooms; in Party Store, t he artist covered every surface of a former convenience store with upcycled artificial and fresh flowers, prompting visitors to consider the issues of consumerism. lisawaud.com

REBECCA LOUISE LAW

This British artist’s monumental vertical installations, crafted with dried and preserved flowers, invite the viewer to physically enter the work, provide opportunity for up-close observation and provoke a sense of wonder and magic. Law takes sustainability seriously — every dried flower is reused, and the artist now has a collection of over 1.75 million preserved flowers in use across the U.S., Asia, Australia and Europe. rebeccalouiselaw.com

IGNACIO CANALES ARACIL

A long-time fascination with flora has led this Spanish artist to recreate it in media from cast porcelain to carved wood. But perhaps Canales Aracil’s crowning glory is his sculptural works made from pressed, dried flowers. Custom moulded, the pressedflower sculptures playfully contrast fragility and transient beauty with strength and structural integrity — a duality inherent in nature itself. el-nogal.tumblr.com
