ild Belle make the kind of laid back reggae-infused dance-pop that you can’t help but sway to. Made up of Chicago raised sibling duo Natalie and Elliot, the band have just released their debut full length album Isles, filled with Natalie’s breezy vocals that flow over Brother Elliot’s gutsy sax and electronic beats. Check out track Keep You to get a feel for their sound and see if you’re able to keep it out of your head for the rest of the day. Support comes from The New Union & Nothing But Thieves. wildbelle.com

TEEN 3rd April | The Hope, Brighton Formed of sisters Teeny, Lizzie and Katherine, along with long- time friends, Jane and Maia, TEEN create psychedelic synthy electro-pop. Filled with vocal harmonies and interesting arrangements, their songs are a mysterious mix of dark and light and make for perfect spring listening. teentheband.com 12 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

Adam Green and Binki Shapiro first joined forces to make 3 track EP Fall last year, and lucky for us something clicked and they decided to make more. Their self-titled album of duets sounds as if they’ve been singing together since the 60s, their voices perfectly complimenting each other’s, creating a sweet and relaxed vibe covering all the joys and sadness of love. adamandbinki.com

THE Growlers

29th April | Komedia, Brighton

26th April | Green Door Store, Brighton

Fans of The Walking Dead may already be familiar with Jamie N Commons, whose track Lead Me Home was recently featured as an episode’s closing track. Despite being only 24, Commons’ has the voice of an established Blues singer twice his years, yet his modern, hip-hop flourishes set him comfortably with the new and not to be missed. jamiencommons.com

Formed in 2006 in Long Beach California The Growlers will be visiting The Green Door Store for the second time this April as part of their European tour.

THE FLAMING LIPS 22nd May | Brighton Dome Concert Hall As well as all of the usual art, theatre, and literature you would expect, Brighton Festival also brings world class musicians to the city. Not to be missed this year as part of the festival are the brilliant Flaming Lips, who play the Dome this May. Hailed as one of the ’50 Bands To See Before You Die’ by Q Magazine, Wayne Coyne and co.’s shows are elaborate confetti-filled spectacles, with a huge back-catalogue of songs to delight all. flaminglips.com

Their latest record Hung at Heart (released 29th April) twists warped 60s surf-garage pop songs into a ramshackle of echoing psychedelia. This is their third album following on from Hot Tropics and Are you in or are you out? Whilst still keeping their signature self-coined ‘bent sound’ and lyrical wisdom from Brooks Neilsen, Hung at Heart explores new ground. With the dreamy yearnings of someday, and the fluttering organ and offbeat rhythms of One Million Lovers the album is filled with a mix of dark moods and love songs. thegrowlers.com

Allah-las

Th e G reat E sc a pe Europe’s leading new music festival returns to our shores this May, bringing hundreds of up and coming bands to the city across 3 days and 30 different venues. Here are some of our picks to look out for from this year’s huge line-up.

ALLAH-LAS

A

DEAP VALLY

llah-Las create beautifully arranged 2-3 minute gems that reverberate, jangle and evoke nostalgic sounds of early Stones and Nuggets volumes. Their gig at The Hope last December was one of our favourite shows of 2012, so the Californian foursome definitely top our list of bands we can’t wait to see at this year’s festival.

LA garage-rock duo Lindsey and Julie are in the realms of serious cool, with killer vocals, huge guitars and highenergy drums, they create a sound much bigger than just the two of them. Although it may be easy to draw comparisons with the likes of White Stripes, Black Keys and The Kills, there’s freshness to Deap Vally that sets them out as one to watch.

MIKAL CRONIN

IGGY AZALEA

Mikal Cronin has been causing a stir State-side recently after impressing with his performances at SXSW in Austin. After a joint recording with Ty Segall in 2010, Cronin has since made two records of his own, his latest MCII filled with all the catchy garage-pop melodies you could hope for, and putting him firmly in our radar for The Great Escape.

Austrailian-born Iggy Azalea became the first female and first non-American rapper to be featured on XXL's annual Top 10 Freshman cover issue, and has been turning heads and bringing in YouTube views ever since. Latest single Work features a hook that will stick in your head for days, and paves the way for debut album The New Classic.

Dome SHows

CHVRCHES CHVRCHES started the year by being featured in the BBC Sound of 2013 list, placing 5th overall. The Glaswegian trio take elements of classic electronica, hip hop and post-punk, fusing them into entrancing cosmic mini-masterpieces.

Once again the Dome will host three nights of headline shows which festival goers can attend with a £7 per show top-up on their wristbands. Thursday night sees Manchester’s Everything Everything take to the stage, bringing their unique brand of indie pop. Set to play on the Friday night of the festival is the legendary Billy Bragg, whose impassioned outlook has inspired countless audiences and artists alike in his 30-year career. The third night of shows is rounded off with Bastille, who have exploded onto the scene and into the charts this year with their number one album Bad Blood. ABIGAIL’S PARTY

UNDERNEATH THE LINTEL

1st - 6th April | Theatre Royal, Brighton

11th - 12th April | New Venture Theatre, Brighton

M

ike Leigh’s classic comedy Abigail’s Party is a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a world obsessed with class and taste. Beverly and estate agent husband Laurence are preparing to open their home for the social get-together from hell. As Demis Roussos plays and the alcohol flows, the horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery! The production comes to Brighton following a triumphant West End run. atgtickets.com/brighton

FROZEN

This remarkable production previews in Brighton for 2 nights only before transferring to London. A librarian embarks on a quest to find out who anonymously returned a library book that is 113 years overdue. The only clues are a scribble on the margin of the book and an unclaimed dry-cleaning ticket. In discovering a link between seemingly innocuous facts and truths, is it possible to prove the existence of a life, and in doing so waste another? newventure.org.uk

Neville’s Island 23rd - 25th April | Connaught Theatre, Worthing

9th - 13th April | Brighton Little Theatre Frozen tells the story of the disappearance of 10-yearold Rhona, following her mother and killer over the years that follow. Linked by a doctor who is studying what causes men to commit such crimes, the three lives slowly intersect as the characters become ‘unfrozen’ and come to terms with the idea of forgiveness. brightonlittletheatre.com 18 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

This brilliant comedy comes from Tim Firth, writer of Calendar Girls and Kinky Boots. Neville has managed to crash a boat full of middle management fortysomethings on a team building exercise, marooning them all on an island in the middle of Derwentwater in the Lake District. When they discover there might be a homicidal lunatic loose on the island, humorous irritation turns into hysterical panic! worthingtheatres.co.uk

Four Farces

PASSION PLAY

JEKYLL AND HYDE

23rd - 27th April | Theatre Royal, Brighton

14th - 18th May | Connaught Theatre, Worthing

Peter Nichol’s black comedy about love and infidelity takes a look at and reveals the illicit desires and hidden passions that lie beneath the everyday façade. Comfortably married for 25 years, James and Eleanor’s world is upended when James agrees to a secret rendezvous with their recently widowed friend Kate. Zoe Wanamaker stars in this modern classic and winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play. atgtickets.com/brighton

Henry Jekyll is a maverick doctor, embarking on dangerous research, concocting combinations of rare drugs to find a cure for dementias of the mind in this Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson's Victorian novel. With no one but himself to test his experimentations, Jeckyll degenerates into his primitive and murderous alter ego - Edward Hyde. The tale is a chilling Steampunk inspired, gothic fantasy thriller that chases through the dark, dangerous streets of Victorian London. wmcs.org.uk

Four Farces 8th May | Connaught Theatre, Worthing

NO MAN’S LAND 20th - 25th May | Brighton Little Theatre

Four English one-act farces from the 19th Century. You’ll see duelling pistols, mistaken identity, double-crossing, intoxication, cross dressing, double-crossing, romance and a shot in the dark. Played in an imaginative style, this promises to be a night of raucous laughter and great fun. worthingtheatres.co.uk

20 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

Two men in a room of a house on a summer’s night; do they know each other or is each performing an elaborate charade of recognition? Django Unchained

Q

Released 25th May

uentin Tarantino’s spaghetti Western sees the director back to his best. Jamie Foxx stars as Django, a slave who finds himself in the company of bounty hunter Dr. King Shultz (Christoph Waltz). With a promise of freedom upon the capture of the Murderous Brittle Brothers alive or dead, they head cross country to track them down, and seek revenge. Filled with all of the witty and fast-paced dialogue you would expect from a Tarantino film, and with perfectly timed performances from the whole cast (which also includes Samuel L. Jackson and a brilliant Leonardo DiCaprio as plantation owner Calvin Candie), the almost-three-hours run time seems much shorter as you’re drawn into the story and its many twists and turns.

The Whisky Lounge 6th April | The Hilton Metropole, Brighton

T

he Whisky Lounge specialise in encouraging everyone to develop and nurture an interest in whisky through tasting events, activities and workshops. Their aim is to entertain, educate and continuously delight all of those involved; breaking down barriers, myths and legends whilst promoting the understanding that whisky is a historical and iconic product of almost alchemic origins. This April The Whisky Lounge returns to Brighton for the fourth time with Brighton Whisky Fest, taking place at the Hilton Metropole on Saturday 6th April 12pm - 5pm. The festival attracts the best the industry has to offer, including the likes of Berry Brothers with their single cask independently bottled whiskies, Chivas Brothers, with The Glenlivet and Aberlour, and Diageo with a good representation of their many malt distilleries, such as Lagavulin and Talisker. Plus, be one of the first to taste the craft distilled Texan corn whiskey, Balcones; all will be present to entertain and talk you through their ranges. 28 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

With their ticket visitors gain access to sample all whiskies in the main hall, as well as receiving a festival guide, a Glencairn tasting glass, a bottle of water (for obvious purposes) and two ‘under the counter dram’ tokens. These can be redeemed at selected exhibitor stands for a rather special dram. Visitors also get the chance to take part in one of two free workshops which take place during the day. So how does the day work? Visitors can simply approach any of the many exhibitor stands and ask for a dram to try; you will then receive a tasty glass of whisky. Exhibitors will know their whiskies inside out, presenting a fantastic chance to take advantage of their knowledge and find out about their processes for making such flavoursome whiskies. Don't miss this rare opportunity to taste a huge range of flavours from the most diverse spirit in the world. Full-Day tickets (from 12.00 PM) £30.00 Half-Day tickets (from 2.30 PM) £20.00 available from thewhiskylounge.com or call 01904 410841

Ask an Osteopath Q: I’m training for the Brighton Marathon and find my legs get really stiff and achy for a couple of days after a long run. Can you recommend any stretches to help?

E

xperts once believed stiff, achy muscles after exercise were due to a build-up of waste products such as lactic acid, however more recent evidence suggests the cause is tiny “micro-tears” within the muscle fibres, along with the resulting swelling as the muscle heals over the next few days. Over-stretching these irritated muscles may actually lead to a protective tightening of the muscle to guard itself from injury, so the key to effective stretching is to be gentle and hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds, to allow the muscle to relax. A stretch should never be painful; only take the stretch as far as necessary to feel a gentle pull in the muscle. Another key to effective stretching is repetition: try to perform the stretches a few times a day, for example, first thing in the morning, last thing at night and after training. In terms of stretches to help your legs, the following are quite general and should help with overall flexibility in your legs. To stretch the backs of your legs, stand with your feet shoulder width apart, then crouching down and place your palms on the floor. Walk your hands forward a 30 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

couple of paces and, pushing your heels down to the floor, slowly start to straighten your knees until you feel a gentle stretch down the backs of your thighs and into your calves. To stretch the fronts of your legs, lay on one side with your back straight and legs outstretched, knees together. Bend the top leg at the knee, reaching back and grasping your foot with your hand. Gently pull your foot towards your bottom until you feel a stretch through the top of your foot, and front of your shin and thigh. If you are not feeling the stretch in the top of your thigh, try taking your top knee backwards a little as you stretch. Turn onto your other side and repeat with the other leg. There are of course many other stretches that can be employed if you are having problems with specific muscles; I would recommend seeking further advice from a healthcare provider or fitness professional. Whatever you do, remember the golden rule: keep the stretches gentle, sustained and pain-free! Do you have a health question to ask an osteopath? down with and have 2.4 children so expecting life to stay the same is unrealistic. Don’t get me wrong, as a coach, I’m all for setting goals but realistic achievable goals that have the flexibility to move with what is happening in your life. So when people come to me having hit a “significant age” with a list of what they should have achieved, we tear it up and start again. Focusing on where you are now and what you can affect in the near future is a great place to start. What can you do differently today to make a difference to tomorrow? That might be something as simple as planning the week ahead so that you don’t spend your time in a constant state of panic? It might be cutting out the takeaway coffees each day and therefore saving a tenner a week to put towards something else more important – little steps make big differences.

Kate Tilston Life Coaching Practice The Five-Year Plan…. When I start seeing new clients, many of them come to me worried because they don’t have a “five-year plan”. They might have reached a certain age or stage in their life where they had expected to have achieved certain things and they just haven’t happened, well, that’s life! I don’t know about you, but if I look back to 5 years ago, I could never have imagined some of the things that were going to happen to me in the next 5 years and I’m not talking little stuff, I’m talking getting married, moving to the seaside, acquiring lovely stepsons as well as some rubbish stuff which I won’t bore you with. Life is not like it used to be where people were in jobs for a lifetime, they didn’t have the opportunities to travel like we can now, life isn’t just about find someone to settle 32 | INSIDE MAGAZINE

I understand you want to achieve things but what are your priorities right now? What needs to happen in 2013 for you to feel that you have achieved something? Maybe it’s recreational – a 10K run for charity? Maybe it’s a health goal – losing some weight, eating more healthily? Maybe it’s changing jobs to enable you to earn more, for career progression or just doing something you enjoy? If you want longer term goals because you know that’s what drives you forward, check with yourself that a) they are realistic and flexible and b) they work with the other people in your life – no point striving for something that you think you “should” be doing for other’s sake if they don’t actually want it? Each day is significant in our lives and making them count is what is really important not necessarily knowing or planning what you are going to be doing in five years time. If you can let go of the “five year plan” and it suits your way of thinking, it can be terribly liberating and you might find those short-term goals are so much more fulfilling as you can see immediate affects?
