SARAH JONES

W

orking as an artist and illustrator for over 20 years, Sarah Jones has produced images for clients such as Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and British Airways. More recently she has been using Artists Open Houses as a platform to develop her work and showcase her limited edition prints. Combining printed marks, patterns and details in her work, Jones draws on her illustration background to create cityscapes and landscapes featuring locations and landmarks from across the country such as Picadilly Circus and Brighton seafront. Her use of bright colours and bold marks gives each piece a contemporary feel that seems to be unique to her, bringing new life to the familiar scenes her work depicts.

Jones’ current home, Milton House in the Port Hall area of Brighton, was chosen specifically with the purpose to become an Open House, opening twice a year to exhibit her own work alongside a selection of local artists. This Christmas, 15 artists will have work to view and buy from Milton House, including Adam Bracey, who has frequently exhibited with Jones at venues such as the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham, and the Regency Town House in Hove. CLARE BUCKLE

A

rtist Clare Buckle creates work inspired by chance visual happenings; brief glimpses of something seen unexpectedly out of the corner of the eye, lines of paths and tracks travelled and the sense of memories being triggered. Familiar scenes are depicted from unexpected angles, with small details of structures and landscapes becoming the main focus of the image. Buckle’s prints take the viewer on a journey, travelling past wasteland, through fields and trees and under imposing electricity pylons. Having studied illustration at the Royal College of Art, Buckle works primarily with print making - relief printing, lithography and screen printing - but also produces pastels and mixed media works. She has exhibited regularly in London and Brighton, and this winter has work featuring in two Christmas Open House venues; At the CoachHouse and The Claremont hotel in Hove where her work will be on display until April 2015. clarebuckleart@gmail.com www.clarebuckle.weebly.com 07800 512403

MARK BRISTOW

M

ark Bristow has worked in photography and design for the last twenty years, with a wide variety of projects and an array of clients under his belt.

As an artist, Mark's photographs look into the details that surround us every day, picking up on details perhaps otherwise lost from sight or overlooked, such as the way light distorts or the way rain can make a surface shine and reflect. Travel and new perspectives are also a big influence on Mark's work, as he explains, ‘When you visit a new destination it’s very much like being a child again, seeing the world with new eyes and those details that always attract me’. Since moving to Brighton the city has provided much inspiration for Bristow, who is in the process of creating a series of Brightonbased artworks. This year he is taking part in AOH for the first time, as part of the New England House Open Studios. mark.bristow@me.com markbristowphotography.com

MILO HARTNOLL

H

aving studied illustration at Brighton University, artist Milo Hartnoll has since taken to figurative painting; inspired by ideas of distortion and deformity, both human and technological.

Hartnoll is influenced by the erratic behaviours of technology and glitching television screens, translating their irregular patterns into paint; working with oil to create canvases depicting portraits which appear blurred, pixelated and contorted as though transmitted through a suffering satellite signal. There is an emotional quality to Hartnoll’s work which is perhaps a result of his fascination with old medical journals illustrating flesh deformities and skin conditions, similar in aesthetics to the markings caused by electrical faults in the way they form patterns across the skin. Recently Hartnoll has displayed work alongside other graduates at an abandoned car park in Fulham, and has also shown alongside other painters at Canarby street. This Christmas will be his first time participating in Artist Open Houses, exhibiting at the New England House Open Studios. Milo is also available for portrait commisions, get in touch to find out more: milohartnoll.tumblr.com | milohartnoll@yahoo.co.uk

YOU ARE A SNOWFLAKE

C

hristmas is approaching and many of us are hoping to wake up on Christmas day to a blanket of snow outside. If this happens, it’s worth remembering that in all those billions of snowflakes that make up that wintery, white carpet, there are actually no two that are exactly the same! As an osteopath who loves the snow, I can see the similarities between people and snowflakes. Just as snowflakes are unique, so are people. We may appear to be similar to others at first glance but we are not the same! Let me ask you: are you an average person? If you are a man, are you 38 years old, 5’9” tall, weighing 13.16 stone and have completed A-levels? If you are a woman, are you 40 years old, 5’3” tall, weighing 11 stone and educated to GCSE level? And do you have 1.96 children, the first being born when you were 29.4 years old? The chances are, there are some differences between you and the average UK male and female described above! That is because the average person is just a statistic, not flesh and blood. No two of us are exactly the same – not even identical twins!

Yes, we can view the population as a whole and make some generalisations, just as we can think of a wintery landscape and know the snow would be cold, white and crunchy under foot, but the closer we look, the more the differences become apparent. The more we focus on individuals the more obvious it is that we are all just that – individual! I often treat people with what at first seem to be the same symptoms, injuries or conditions; but I have never met two people with the same diagnosis who are the same age, gender and weight, have the same personality type and who also have the exact same modes of injury, sets of symptoms and examination findings! And because of this, no two people with the same diagnosis will receive the exact same treatment plan from me. It’s finding all those subtle differences between one person and the next that I particularly love about my job! So whatever weather we wake up to this Christmas, please remember that there is nothing average about you: you may appear similar to others but actually you are as unique and individual as a snowflake!
