Expect to see everything from fine art paintings to sculpture, ceramics, prints, photography, textile art and more. Taking part in the Worthing Art Trail in the second, third and fourth weekends in June is the Ashdown Road Artists house (39 Ashdown Road, BN11 1DF), home to seven artists exhibiting a mix of prints, photography, textile design, ceramics and cards, led by artist and printmaker Anna Vartiainen. Her full range of work will be on display during the trail, including one-offs only available at the open house.

Worthing based duo hello DODO will also be exhibiting with their bright and clever screen prints, t-shirts and tote bags – each one hand-printed – and their fun, witty range of greetings cards perfect for every occasion. Other exhibitors at Ashdown Road Artists House include illustrator and designer I am John Bond, whose work features a mix of quirky character design, bold colours and typography, Debbie Terry who creates illustrated homewares and accessories, and photographer Sam Pharoah. ARTS & CULTURE

ARTS & CULTURE Marcus Coates – Dawn Chorus

A

s always around May, Brighton really came alive with the arts. We are fortunate to live in a city that embraces the arts so strongly and the wide variety of events that run alongside. Grassroots events like the Fringe and Artists Houses run alongside the festival and ensure that every single creative person has a suitable opportunity to display their work and contribute to the art world at a time where its eye is firmly fixed on Brighton come festival time. We have had some amazing exhibitions. Rachel Kneebone, known for her porcelain sculptures that are fixed in the transient state of breaking, has featured at the University of Brighton; An intriguing exploration of water has popped up at Circus Street and the PopUp Brighton shop “It Is What It Is” has, as always, displayed some fascinating student works. For me though there has been a true stand out show, and one that encapsulates the power of fine art

birdsong through sped up human song. Made up of 13 screens and speakers displaying individuals who intermittently come alive and “call” to one another. The birdsong originally recorded is wholly territorial, which is reflected in the different heights and placements of the screens as a tension is created between them. The speeding up of the participants to create the high pitched noise, mean that they take on birdlike characteristics in their movement and blurs the line between human and animal. Additionally, each person has characteristics of their own that crosses all kinds of class boundaries and societal rules and shows a sensitivity that the artist displays in all aspects of this piece. Coates is aware of the venue and how it interacts with his piece. The fact that it was a church is fitting for an exhibition like this. The ambience and acoustics of the venue enhance the exhibition, introducing a sense of spirituality and a euphoric sense of freedom. The

and its ability to effect all senses simultaneously. Marcus Coates’ Dawn Circus continues his anthropomorphic theme using video and sound to achieve this. First shown in 2007, this piece creates

viewer becomes overwhelmed by the sound, and is allowed to lose themselves in it. It is a beautiful, thoughtful piece and a real pleasure to have in Brighton. Christopher Spring

MR MAGPIE

An emporium of collectable and letterpress workshops

O

pening five years ago, Mr. Magpie Collectors Emporium is one of those unexpected hidden gems that are synonymous with Brighton’s North Laines.

The shop, which can be found at 94a Gloucester Road, is stacked with all manner of collectables in every nook and cranny; with nostalgic trinkets of childhood and vintage memorabilia catching the eye from every angle. Three years ago Mr. Magpie also opened his typography studio for the public, offering Letterpress Poster workshops for the artistically inclined to get a taste of the process. The four hour workshops are structured with participants building a block of text, learning the technique while experimenting with font and type before printing several high quality poster prints. With a maximum of two people per class you can expect an intimate and focused experience which will see you really get to grips with letterpress techniques, whether you’re a complete beginner or have tried your hand at printing before.

Mr. Magpie is happy to share his expert knowledge gained from more than 30 years working as a typographer, with facts and anecdotes about the history of typesetting, and his own fascinating career in the industry. With the most comprehensive range of fonts in Brighton, gathered across several decades of dedicated collecting, it is clear that Mr. Magpie’s passion for the craft has not lessened over the years, as digital technology takes over the way we work. Workshops with Mr. Magpie can be arranged Sunday to Friday and can be booked in advance online or by telephone, or by visiting the Collectors Emporium shop. mr-magpie.com

WALTER WALL For the past five years I’ve been here on the edge. I’ve heard waves pound the rocks, seen them wash over the beach, froth up and disappear. I’ve felt wet fog on my face, rough stones under my feet and wind in my hair. I’ve seen the sea take on more colours than I’d ever imagine, clouds morph and objects fade into the darkness then transform in man made light. I’ve used colour, texture and gesture to explore painting. And for a while now I’ve worked with chance and the unexpected to expand my visual range and create the unpredictable. I dribble, I blow, I scrape, I wipe. I brush, I pour, I spread, I throw. I chuck and stick when I want, where I want and how I want. What am I? HEALTH

HEALTH Be SMART and Have Fun in the Sun!

I

n the UK we seem obsessed with the sun. Perhaps it’s because the British weather can be so unpredictable that we want to get out in the sunshine at every given opportunity!

Sun exposure is important for our bodies because it boosts our body’s vitamin D supply; this not only promotes healthy bones but helps to prevent illnesses such as depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), inflammatory conditions, multiple sclerosis and even some cancers, including melanoma (skin cancer). This may seem hard to believe, given that we are constantly warned of the risk of skin cancer with excessive sun exposure, but there is a lower incidence in people who work outdoors compared to indoor workers. Outdoor workers are exposed to more of the ‘good’ ultraviolet radiation (UVB), which increases vitamin D production; while indoor workers tend to get mainly the ‘bad’ UVA, which breaks down vitamin D. People who spend lots of time indoors are therefore less protected against skin cancer when they do expose themselves to the sun. Sunshine also enhances our mood and protects against winter depression by allowing our bodies to stockpile

vitamin D, which in turn leads to higher levels of the mood enhancing chemical serotonin in our brains. Aside from the effects of boosting vitamin D, regular sun exposure during the day can help to maintain a good body clock, so that our bodies can correctly identify when we should be awake and when we should be asleep. The UV light in sunshine also releases a chemical in the skin called nitric oxide, which can reduce blood pressure. Considering the health benefits of sun exposure, we really shouldn’t avoid it but we should enjoy it safely to avoid sunstroke and damage to the eyes, as well as sunburn. The NHS recommend you follow the ‘SunSMART’ messages: Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm; Make sure you never burn; Aim to cover up with a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses; Remember to take extra care with children; Then use factor 15+ sunscreen. So get outside and enjoy the sun, just do it safely! Do you have a health question to ask? Email: ross@southdowns-osteopathy.co.uk

WAGGING TAILS Karey, a life time dog lover, was working as a teacher of the deaf when she got involved with Wagging Tails. As a dog owner who had frequently spent hours and hours scouring web pages and newspapers looking for suitable carers whilst she went on holiday, she knew that Wagging Tails would be the perfect solution for the dog owners of Brighton and Hove. Tell us a bit about Wagging Tails and what makes it different from other dog boarding services? Wagging Tales provides dog owners with a kinder, more humane alternative to kennels, providing the option of real home from home care. It is a home boarding service with added exclusive benefits; owners’ dogs stay in the home of carefully selected and vetted carers who are home all day. Only one family’s dog stays with a carer at any one time, to ensure the dogs are lavished with the full care and attention they are accustomed to at home. The owners and their dogs get to check out their proposed holiday home before all arrangements are finalised, meaning owners can leave their beloved canine friends with full peace of mind. They also have the added comfort of knowing they can contact the carer at any time throughout the board to double check all is OK. As an added extra at the end of the holiday, Wagging Tails also provide a holiday report and photos so the family can see what their dog has been up to. For any subsequent bookings the company then aims to place the dog with the same carers – familiarity and peace of mind for the owners and dogs alike! How long has Wagging Tails been looking after dogs in the area? The company was launched in Surrey in Hampshire in 2007. Rapid growth and the number of enquiries coming in from further and further afield lead to the realisation that there was a national demand for the service, and the BN postcode arm of Wagging Tails which I run with my partner Jon and dog Shearer was launched in September 2014. This covers Brighton

and Hove, Lewes, Eastbourne, Worthing, Arundel and all the surrounding areas. Shearer, our dog, is a fifteen and a half year old jack Russell/Patterdale cross who is now very much part of the company and takes an active role in interviewing and sampling prospective and recruited carers! We are soon to be joined by Bailey, a four month old pedenco cross, who is coming from Spain via the charity Give a Dog a Home. How is Wagging Tails expanding in the area? The branch is now getting an increasing number of calls from the Brighton and Hove area and so we are looking to recruit more carers in the city. So if you are an experienced dog owner, love the company of woofs, are home all day and have a safe and secure home and garden in which you would like to welcome canine friends for their holidays we would love to hear from you. You get to enjoy the company a lovely dog and receive payment for doing so! TOTAL DISCOVERIES Take an incredible Indonesian solar eclipse tour in 2016

B

ack in March, the northern Atlantic was witness to a total solar eclipse, the moment when the sun, moon and earth all sit in perfect alignment in the sky. In the UK, outside the path of totality, only a partial eclipse was possible and people gathered outside to witness this event, however millions were left disappointed when the clouds covered the sky and much of the phenomena was completely missed. For all those unlucky to miss even a partial eclipse, imagine instead a once in a lifetime experience; the daytime sky turning to night, birds and animals falling silent, the rare and beautiful sight of the sun’s Diamond Ring fully visible and stars appearing in the sky of a tropical paradise! On the 9th of March 2016 the next total solar eclipse will cross the Indian Ocean and Sulawesi, and with Total Discoveries you could be there to witness it in all of its magnificent splendour; with four incredible tour packages centring on this breath-taking astronomical event, taking you by land and by sea to experience stunning, far-off locations.

For those preferring to stay on land, the Sulawesi tour begins in Makassar, Indonesia, travelling across 11 days to Sengkang and Maros to visit some of the oldest cave paintings in the world, to Poso Lake and the waterfalls of Tentena, before passing by the jungle mountain landscapes en route to Ampana; the viewing point for the eclipse. For the slightly more adventurous there are three exclusive cruises on traditional wooden Pinisi vessels beginning in Sorong and sailing through the National Marine Park of Raja Ampat on a nine day voyage. Each of these magnificent cruises feature activities such as snorkelling, diving, mountain treks and a visit to a pearl farm, before arriving at the central path of the eclipse. Divers who want to take this unique chance will even be able to experience this eclipse under water. Each of these exceptional tours are exclusive to Total Discoveries with very limited places available. For more information, a full itinerary of each tour, prices and to book, head to total-discoveries.com

TAKING TIME TO SHUT DOWN

W

e are all very aware that our lives these days are immersed in technology; from the moment we wake up, to the moment we go

to bed. How many of us are guilty of reaching for the phone, the laptop, and the ipad to check email or our Facebook accounts when we wake up? How many of us fiddle on our devices whilst watching the television not really concentrating on anything? It’s something I was particularly aware of this Easter when spending time with friends with small children, who seemed to be battling to separate their kids from their devices. It was a battle of wills in some instances, and the adults didn’t always win! I appreciate that kids today are subjected to technology in most aspects of their lives including their school work - whether it’s actually at school or researching for homework - but is this healthy? I know this will be an argument that will probably continue for years with varying opinions, but as a Life Coach I’m working with more and more clients who are concerned for their children’s mental well being relating to electronic devices. What’s really interesting is that when we look at

how the adults in the house use their devices it is easy to see why children think it’s acceptable to be constantly plugged in too. I ask my clients to keep a diary for a week of all the times they ‘log on’ outside of their working hours and it’s usually a huge wake up call. We then try a detox for a week where their online time is limited, and you’d be surprised how hard people find this. We probably all recognize the value in shutting everything down but struggle to make ourselves do it. There is HUGE value in this exercise; it helps us to reconnect with life, with people, with the moment even with ourselves. I’m not suggesting that we all just switch off - it just doesn’t seem possible these days - but taking a break from it all, allowing time for engaging in actual human interaction, seems to me to be the start of a far healthier lifestyle for all concerned, and perhaps it will encourage your children to follow your lead. Maybe make certain times in the day a technology free zone. Enjoy your technological time - after all it is part of life these days - but find that time to shut it all down and create space for the other areas of your life and see what a difference it makes.
