FESTIVAL SEASON

T

he start of May means festival season begins in Brighton, with the city coming alive with music, theatre, comedy, dance, cabaret, art and

more.

The month sees The Great Escape Festival, Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe all taking place, the latter seeing colourful characters fill the very streets for unexpected performances. With over 700 events, Brighton Fringe is the largest arts festival in England, and this year’s programme of events won’t disappoint, with something for everyone to enjoy. Here are some of the top picks from this year’s festival, which kicks off 1st - 31st May.

FLOE - JOE’S FACES

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of WW2 OperaCoast presents a programme of vocal and instrumental music by the composers whose lives were affected by WW2 and the Holocaust. Many composers of the time suffered cruel persecution, losing every opportunity to perform, to be published or work at all. While some were able to flee to the US before the war, many lost their lives in the gas chambers of Auschwitz and other concentration camps; their music was lost with them.

NO VOICE UNHEARD Dates: 1 & 2 May, 7.30pm Venue: St John sub Castro Church, Lewes & Unitarian Church, Brighton Tickets: £12.00 @ OperaCoast

OperaCoast has been inspired to bring some of this music back to the audience in Sussex, to be known and remembered along with the names and the lives of the people who created it. operacoast.co.uk wegottickets.com/operacoast Box office: 01273 917272

LIVE PREVIEWS

Your guide to the latest gigs this April & May MOON DUO

KATE TEMPEST

9 April | The Haunt, Brighton

14 May | Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, Brighton

ormed in 2009 by Wooden Shijps guitarist Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada, Moon Duo create psych-rock that fuses the transistor reverb of Suicide or Silver Apples with the heat-haze fuzz of American rock ‘n’ roll. Third album Shadow of the Sun which was released earlier this year sees live drummer John Jeffrey added to the line-up (technically making the duo a trio), giving a boost of physical power to the floating drones of the band's highly mechanised rhythms. moonduo.org

It seems there’s not much that playwright, novelist, poet and recording artist Kate Tempest can’t do well, with two albums, two collections of poetry and three critically acclaimed plays, and a Mercury Music Prize nomination. For this performance as part of Brighton Festival in association with The Great Escape, Kate will be reading from her latest collection of poetry, Hold Your Own, as well as performing with her band. katetempest.co.uk

THE PRODIGY 12 May | Brighton Centre, Brighton After six years since the release of their last record, The Prodigy have returned for 2015 with new album The Day is my Enemy. No strangers to controversy, the new record is described as a ‘journey through the unchartered underbelly of urban nightlife where anger is an ever-present energy lurking just beneath the surface of an edgy calm’. theprodigy.com

THE WARLOCKS 5 May | Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Brighton The Warlocks were founded in 1998 in Los Angeles by Bobby Hecksher, who has led the band from strength to strength. Though their line-up may have had several major switch-ups during their fifteen year existance, their fuzzy psychedelic sound has remained, droning garage rock akin to the likes of the Velvelt Underground and Spacemen 3. thewarlocks.com

MUSIC

THE GREAT ESCAPE 2015 14 - 16 May - Venues across Brighton

T

his year The Great Escape Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary by turning its gaze to closer shores, focusing on the best new talent the UK has to offer. For three days Brighton becomes the new music hub of the world, with hundreds of acts performing in venues across the city. With so much new music on offer you’re spoilt for choice, here’s a selection of the best UK acts to look out for during the festival.

SWIM DEEP B-Town five piece Swim Deep have been making waves across the country since forming in 2011, releasing their 90s-tinged debut album Where The Heaven Are We in 2013 to widely critical acclaim. Latest single To My Brother hints at what’s to come, and it’s got us feeling good.

LAPSLEY Singer, songwriter and producer Låpsley started the year appearing in the BBC Sound of 2015 list, shortly followed by the release of her debut EP Understudy on XL Recordings. Described by The Guardian as a ‘one-woman xx or London Grammar’, Låpsley’s minimal electronic production combined with gorgeous, crystal clear vocals has her hotly tipped as one of the best new UK artists around.

MUSIC

KANZI Brighton’s own Kanzi create ‘Electronic melancholia’ that has been compared to the likes of Burial and Thom Yorke. Their atmospheric self-titled EP was released at the start of the year, full of dreamy synths and gentle vocals; ‘Two Hearts’ is a particular must hear.

GEORGE THE POET Skimming the lines between rap and poetry, George The Poet is a spoken word performer, public speaker, writer and recording artist from North-West London via Cambridge University. His performances offer social commentaries that are skilful yet accessible, whatever your preconceived ideas of poetry may be.

M.O M.O remind us how good pop can be when it’s done right, bringing the essence of 90s R&B groups like TLC and En Vogue right into 2015 with added freshness. Single Dance on my own is a hip-shaking-shoulder-shrugging jam, and has been championed on radio 1 by the likes of Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw.

NAO A slick combination of smooth R&B rhythms, electric synth beats and pop vocals, Nao’s track So Good became Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’ after just 24 hours of being online last year. After sell-out solo shows and time spent high in the iTunes chart, big things are to come from the synth funk Londoner.

ARTS & CULTURE

KIT FORDHAM

T

aking his camera with him, photographer Kit Fordham has travelled across the world, looking beyond the pristine to capture the unnoticed and overlooked microcosms that make up a wider community. Fordham’s work is carefully curated into several photo series which focus on different locations and themes, from the streets of Silicon Valley to the travelling showmen of the UK. Through these sets there is a recurring theme of connecting the old with the new and the traditional with the contemporary, to build a portrait of forgotten worlds that still have a profound effect on our current collective identity. Eastern Soul is a hauntingly beautiful look at everyday life and faith in Russia and the Balkans. With rare access to Orthodox holy places, Fordham challenges common Western stereotypes of a fractured and fractious Eastern Europe, observing a culture lurching

toward the future yet anchored by the traditions of the past. Dreamland-by-the-Sea meanwhile sees the photographer’s gaze set on closer shores, to the seaside towns of Britain. From piers to lidos, pavilions and promenades, the sun-drenched photographs take in the decaying beauty of the neglected attractions to reclaim memories of Britain's bygone love affair with the seaside. Fordham’s work is bought both for its artistic resonance as much as its sheer desirability, ranging from £350 to £1,000, and he exhibits at the Brighton Photo Fringe as well as various London galleries including Pushkin House. kitfordham.com kit@KitFordham.com

n 2012 AmpliFitness owner Orsolya suffered a serious accident which left her with ten stitches in her head, two broken bones in her left foot and a broken backbone. After more than six months of physiotherapy which saw her condition improve only minimally, it was discovered that her backbone hadn’t just broken, but collapsed. Searching for a way to strengthen her muscles, Orsolya found a personal trainer in Hungary who introduced her to AmpliTrain, a training programme which uses EMS (Electric Muscle Stimulation) equipment to offer an intense overall workout while staying gentle to the joints and giving a pain-relief effect. With EMS different parts of the body can be controlled separately meaning a 20 minutes session equals one and a half hours of gym training. The benefits of the training were clear from the first session, and after just three months of AmpliTrain Orsolya found herself almost fully recovered from her injuries and ready to return to Brighton; however the lack of AmpliTrain facilities in the UK meant she was unable to continue on with her sessions. Taking matters into her own hands, Orsolya decided

to open her own AmpliFitness centre – the first and only centre in England - to be able to help others with injuries just as she had. The training however is not just for aiding rehabilitation, it is also for intensifying workouts, for professional athletes who are looking for a supplemental sport activity, and also as an aid for weight loss. AmpliTrain equipment is used by world champions, with 40 different programs which can be tailored to each person’s individual needs. AmpliFitness is now established at Clinic33 in Hove, offering EMS fitness and personal training, rehabilitation and physiotherapy. The benefits of EMS training can be effective for those whose movement is restricted due to injury, disability or conditions such as MS, Obesity, Diabetes, Strokes or Heart problems. If you’d like to try out the benefits of an AmpliTrain workout, AmpliFitness offer your first 20 minute session for free. amplifitness.co.uk - info@amplifitness.co.uk 07990 760 462 AmpliFitness Clinic33, 39B Salisbury Road Hove, East Sussex, BN3 3AA

SPRING CLEAN YOUR HEALTH

S

pring is here; the weather is getting milder, the days are getting longer and the sun is coming out more to lift our moods and energy levels. It is the perfect time to banish those winter blues and improve our health and fitness! During winter there is less fresh, local produce available in the shops and we generally prefer eating comfort foods. The cold, dark days discourage us from getting outside and being active and we adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. When spring arrives, many of us want to immediately return to a healthier lifestyle and enjoy the resulting boost in mood and energy levels; however, it is important to ease ourselves into spring. Muscles can become weaker and tighter through lack of activity during winter, so to suddenly return to pre-winter levels of activity can lead to aches, pains and injury. Relax tight muscles in readiness for being more active by developing a daily routine of stretching, and get your blood flowing with more gentle exercise like walking before considering progressing to more strenuous activities. Winter inactivity will likely have caused our core muscles to become lazy,

so strengthening these muscle groups is important to prevent other muscles – particularly in our backs – from becoming tired, overworked and prone to injury. For our bodies to work well and cope with a more active lifestyle, they need healthy sources of energy and nutrients. Fresh, colourful springtime fruits and vegetables and lean cuts of fresh meat will be far more beneficial than the processed, sugar-laden convenience foods that we tend to gravitate towards during the winter. It is also important to remember to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and boost our metabolism as our activity levels increase. Of course, despite the health benefits of better diets and more activity, springtime can bring its own health issues for some, the most common of these being seasonal allergies such as hay fever. If you are a sufferer, make sure you have strategies in place to control your symptoms before heading outside to enjoy the delights that nature has to offer! Do you have a health question to ask?
