Welcome to 2023 Inova Honors —An Evening with Our Inova Stars Like a kaleidoscope, in the turn of one moment, life can change forever. Tonight, you will meet two Inova patients who experienced traumatic accidents that have changed their lives — and the lives of their families — forever. In sharing their stories with us, Cal Bowie and Inova physician leader, Dr. Robin West, will help us honor and uplift the truly exceptional contributions made each day by Inova’s Emergency Medicine and Trauma teams. Last year, Inova provided state-of-the-art emergency care to nearly 450,000 patients. On average, annually, Inova Trauma Center sees about 3,000 trauma codes and consults and enters just over 4,000 patients into the trauma registry. Inova Fairfax Hospital is Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and Inova Loudoun Hospital is Loudoun County’s first and only designated trauma center. What Cal and Robin and their families will all tell you is how, in their most unimaginable moments, the courage, compassion and commitment of their Inova care team helped them to persevere and keep hope alive. Cal and Robin, and thousands more in our community, owe their lives to these frontline heroes and thousands of emergency responders in our region, some of whom join us here tonight. We are deeply proud of the more than 500 team members who deliver world-class emergency and trauma care to our community, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 2023 Honorees: Inova’s Emergency Medicine and Trauma Teams Emergencies can strike anyone at any time. According to the CDC, in the first half of life, more Americans die from injuries and violence — such as motor vehicle crashes, suicide or homicides — than from any other cause, including cancer, HIV or the flu. This makes injury the leading cause of death for people under age 45. 2023 Inova Honors is proud to recognize our Emergency Medicine and Trauma teams who are on the front lines of care for those in urgent need. These teams of over 500 professionals work tirelessly to save lives, provide immediate care and comfort to patients and their families during times of crisis. Inova’s Emergency Medicine and Trauma teams work together across five hospital-based emergency departments, six stand-alone emergency rooms and ten Inova-GoHealth urgent cares. Rather than being treated by a single practitioner, our patients in critical care situations are treated by a team of highly trained, experienced surgeons, physicians and clinicians, providing multidisciplinary care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. As Northern Virginia’s only Level I Trauma Center, Inova stands ready for the most traumatic, time-sensitive emergencies to provide lifesaving care and comfort for our community. Our expert clinicians, along with our region’s first responders, are trained for every aspect of injury – and for swift, safe and coordinated responses to natural disasters, mass casualties and disease outbreaks like COVID-19.
Paula Ferrada, MD, FACS, FCCM, MAMSE, Division Chief, Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and Tanveer Gaibi, MD, MBA, FACEP, Division Chief, Emergency Medicine, will accept the award on behalf of their teams. After experiencing a traumatic horseback riding accident, Cal was promptly met by Emergency Medical Services first responders from Fauquier County and flown by rescue helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center. You will hear their incredible story and learn how Inova’s Emergency and Trauma teams are a critical lifeline in our community.

On an early April morning in a horrific twist of fate, Robin West, MD, Chair of Inova Sports Medicine and orthopedic surgeon, found her very life in the hands of the Inova team she has led for nearly a decade. A routine bike ride down the popular W&OD trail in Northern Virginia turned into a nightmare after an accident left her with severe and potentially debilitating injuries. Miraculously, she was found by a passerby and was soon attended to and stabilized by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue first responders. Rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital, her surgical team rallied around her, performing a successful, complex operation on their leader, colleague and friend. Dr. West is making steady progress on her path to recovery and tonight, joins us as our special guest. Robin’s journey embodies the selfless dedication and trusting bonds between Inova’s caregivers and patients. Her resilience is a powerful testament to her team’s skill and her strength is an inspiration to her family, patients, team and our community.

Thank you, Dr. Moynihan, for your dedicated service to our community! Having surgery can be a frightening experience. As surgeons, we understand that and are committed to helping our patients and their families get through that experience with the care and support they need. As a long standing advocate of safe surgical care, I am proud and privileged to work with our expert clinicians and care teams at Inova who make this possible.
John J. Moynihan, MD has served as President of the Inova Surgery Service Line with oversight responsibility for the delivery of surgical care across all Inova hospitals since March 2020. He has had previous leadership positions at Inova including being the Chair of Surgery at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. Dr. Moynihan is a board certified general surgeon who remains active clinically caring for patients with general surgical conditions. Over the last two decades he and his team have transformed and elevated surgical care at Inova through multidisciplinary training, standardization of practices and outcomes research. As a result of his passionate leadership and dedication, Inova now offers a full complement of surgical services by surgeons who are recognized leaders in their field to meet the varied and complex needs of our patients.
