In May of 2023, Dwight and Martha Schar made a transformational $75 million gift to support our heart and vascular services and challenged our community — you! — to match their gift over the next year.

Inova Schar Heart and Vascular
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the United States. The toll is particularly high for those over 65, in Black and Hispanic communities and for women of all races.
A leader in amputation prevention - Your philanthropic support addresses inequities in outcomes for all patients. This year, Inova was recognized as a Vascular Consultant to the American Diabetes Association for our work in preventing amputation. This work to address inequal outcomes is a difference in the lives of your neighbors, like Beryl Croll.
Beryl Croll’s Story
After 40 years as a Type 2 diabetic, Mrs. Croll received heartbreaking news: she needed a double amputation. Above the knee. It would have drastically reduced her mobility and quality of life.
When she and her family went for a second opinion, the surgeon said, “I do these types of surgeries, but if your mom were my mom, I would take her to Dr. Neville.”
That referral to Dr. Richard Neville, Director of Inova Vascular, Associate Director of Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery changed the course of Mrs. Croll’s life.
Dr. Neville was the right person with the right resources here at Inova. He promised he would do everything he could to save her limbs.
And he did.
