When the COVID-19 pandemic struck our region in early 2020, millions of our neighbors in Northern Virginia found themselves suddenly unable to work or send their children to school.

Paying rent or a mortgage, keeping the lights on, feeding a family … things many of us may take for granted during better times were no longer certainties for so many in our community.

As those difficult days turned into months — and now almost two years on — Inova team members and supporters have selflessly stepped into the void to ensure that patients and families who are struggling can receive the care, resources and support they need to focus on healing instead of their financial hardships.

Inova has long worked to address health disparities in our community by identifying gaps and strengthening and leveraging resources to safeguard and advance good health for all.

At this 2021 Inova Honors, we recognize and honor the Inova team members, generous supporters and community partners who, working together, make a difference in the health and well-being of each patient in every community we have the privilege to serve.

Through this event, we will raise more than $1 million to support those in our community experiencing financial insecurity. And together, we will build stronger, healthier communities that will impact our region’s future for years to come.

Our team accesses Patient Financial Assistance and we work with their landlord or mortgage company to get them caught up so that patients can get the help they need when they need it. Celebrating Our Philanthropy Partners COVID-19 has changed our world in so many ways, including casting a spotlight on the socioeconomic disparities facing so many of our Northern Virginia neighbors. Welcome to a Very Special Inova Honors Tonight we recognize and celebrate the teams behind two Inova programs that act as safety nets for those in our community who are facing difficult circumstances. Over the years, these programs have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients and families.

Our Inova Cares Clinics provide compassionate primary healthcare, education and resources for patients who are uninsured or underinsured.

Patient Financial Assistance is a resource that is available to any individual or family that may be struggling to cover critical expenses such as medication co-pays, groceries, temporary childcare and transportation.

This emergency cash assistance allows patients and their families to focus on what matters most — their health.

I am so proud of the Inova team members who work every day to support and care for our neighbors, especially those patients and families who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Across Inova Health System, these individuals in both clinical and non-clinical roles commit to deliver Inova’s promise of world-class healthcare to each person, in every community we have the privilege to serve, regardless of their ability to pay.

2021 INOVA HONOREE

Patient Financial Assistance It’s hard to concentrate on healing and your health when you don’t know if you will have enough money to pay next month’s rent or mortgage.

Or where your family’s next meal will come from. Or if you can’t pay the cell phone bill when you need to schedule medical appointments.

That’s the harsh reality for tens of thousands of Northern Virginia residents who come to Inova. And it’s a reality that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each story of individuals helped is as unique as they are themselves. No two

people’s situation is the same — as our team members know.

For example, one patient had cancer and had been an Uber driver but was suddenly out of work because of the pandemic and trying to care for young children on no income. Another was a young woman with an ill baby who was unable to pay her cell phone bill — her only means of communication with her child’s doctor and the outside world.

They — and thousands of other patients like them — are the reason why Patient Financial Assistance is so important.

In 2020, this safety net was stretched to its limits during the COVID-19 pandemic as thousands of patients who were undergoing medical treatments found themselves out of work and unable to cover bills or basic living expenses.

Tonight, Debra Brooks, RPH, Director of Retail and Specialty Pharmacy, will be accepting this award on behalf of the team critical to the Patient Financial Assistance program.

Inova Cares Clinics Inova Cares Clinics provide comprehensive primary care services for women, children and families, and last year, cared for more than 19,000 patients across our region.

These clinics serve as medical homes for patients of all ages who qualify for Medicaid, Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS), Inova’s Financial Assistance Program, or are uninsured. In addition to providing regular physicals, ongoing health maintenance and check-ups, the multidisciplinary clinical and non-clinical teams at Inova Cares Clinics work in close coordination to help our patients get and stay

healthy and better manage chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

The patients and families we serve trust Inova to deliver world-class healthcare, every time, every touch.
