El temor del artista frente a la tela en blanco es como el del escritor frente a la página vacía. Una parálisis existencial que no tiene tanto que ver con la posibilidad de no lograr una imagen o una escritura significativa, sino más bien con el peligro de no poder poner en marcha el proceso creativo que sustenta al autor en su lugar. Cada vez que se emprende una obra se inicia una batalla que es, ante todo, una cruzada personal. Una lucha por sostener la pasión, la vocación y la energía que construyen a diario la columna vertebral del trabajo del artista.

Las pinturas de Liliana Golubinsky prolongan esta dinámica hacia el propio terreno pictórico. En sus superficies, los personajes y acontecimientos se arremolinan en una suerte de contienda agónica, heterogénea pero productiva. Un movimiento vibrante atraviesa las telas, otorgándoles una vida singular; una vitalidad que se transmite casi de inmediato al ojo que las observa y que recién encuentra la calma a medida que los conglomerados de imágenes van develándose en sus metáforas y sentidos.

Aunque los motivos se han ido modificando a lo largo del tiempo, la construcción dinámica del espacio plástico es una marca autoral que traduce con insistencia la complejidad de nuestro mundo contemporáneo. De hecho, son numerosas las referencias a la vida actual, a los problemas que atraviesa la realidad de todos los días, a los valores y las idiosincrasias que dictan actitudes y modos de ser y pensar. Pero todas estas remisiones aparecen más bien en formas lúdicas, en juegos visuales e ironías, en situaciones que plasman una perspectiva crítica fundada sobre una mirada aguda y personal.

LAs bAtALLAs de LA pintuRA

Las obras de finales de los noventas muestran a una Liliana Golubinsky embarcada en la tarea de erigir su universo imaginario a partir de citas y apropiaciones. Utilizando la técnica del collage, recorta mapas y figuras de la historia del arte y los pega sobre el lienzo, conformando unos conjuntos visuales plagados de repeticiones, homenajes y resonancias. Algunas imágenes son particularmente recurrentes, como el Retrato ecuestre del Conde-Duque de Olivares de Diego Velázquez, otros jinetes y barcos antiguos. Con todos ellos elabora verdaderos escenarios de guerra, como en Batalla ganada (1995) o en los cuadros relacionados con avanzadas bélicas y conquistas: Cada cual atiende su juego (1999), Tormenta en altamar (1999), La procesión (2000). En todos los casos, el espacio está diseñado mediante el recurso del plano rebatido, que traduce los posicionamientos horizontales en ubicaciones verticales, otorgando al espectador una visión completa e instantánea de todo lo que sucede en él. La pintura se construye mediante veladuras y capas superpuestas, lo cual le otorga una densidad y una oscuridad que contrasta con la liviandad de sus producciones posteriores.

Muchas de estas pinturas suelen estar atravesadas por una escritura automática que configura una capa subterránea, al mismo tiempo textual y visual. En ella se despliega un sustrato narrativo que podría funcionar también a la manera de una memoria histórica. No obstante, su contenido es incomprensible, o sólo puede aprehenderse fragmentariamente. De esta forma, es mucho más evocativo que informativo, no apunta a revelar el sentido de la representación sino que más bien la complejiza con un elemento abierto a la significación.

Ya en estos años comienzan a aparecer algunas marcas que se continúan –e incluso profundizan– en los trabajos posteriores. Una de ellas tiene que ver con los títulos. En muchos casos estos provienen de la cultura popular, de frases hechas, canciones, películas, refranes, etcétera –Aquel tapado de armiño (1997), Cada cual atiende su juego (1999), El burrito del teniente (2002)–. También se hace presente en este período la mirada irónica, crítica y burlona que se potenciará más tarde; en Gira la calesita (1997), por ejemplo, los jinetes montan caballos con ruedas y la batalla se ha transformado en un verdadero juego.

Otro punto importante se encuentra en su naturaleza narrativa. Todas las obras de Golubinsky poseen algún tipo de sustrato argumental, incluso si no es evidente a primera vista. Pero lo más destacado es que éste está erigido sobre una multitud de pequeños microrrelatos, muchas veces incongruentes, que parecieran coincidir tan solo en la proximidad espacial. Si se los observa con detenimiento, es posible advertir la falta de interconexión entre los personajes que pueblan las telas y entre los acontecimientos que cada uno de ellos lleva adelante. Este rasgo se ahondará en los años posteriores, cuando los temas pierdan la pátina de relato histórico y empiecen a abordar el mundo contemporáneo. Aquí, las multitudes aparecen conformadas por individuos en actitudes más bien solitarias, ensimismados, realizando tareas específicas con independencia de su entorno, presos de la indiferencia, la abulia o la alienación.

En los albores del milenio, las pinturas de Golubinsky comienzan a sufrir una transformación importante. Junto a las figuras prestadas por la historia del arte – que ahora son pintadas sobre la tela, y no recortadas y pegadas – surgen otras inventadas por ella, delineadas rápidamente, con rasgos simples pero contundentes. La crítica de arte y académica, Nelly Perazzo, acierta cuando asegura que con esta decisión la artista «empieza a hablar por ella misma en lugar de hacerlo en tercera persona».

Este proceso se produce de manera gradual. En piezas como Blanqueando historias (2002) coexisten los jinetes y los barcos con una multitud de figuras humanas que, desde un segun-

do plano, reclaman atención hacia su presencia. A medida que estas figuras van adquiriendo protagonismo, la materialidad y composición de las telas se modifican. La pintura va abriendo lugar al dibujo como eje visual y se torna cada vez más ligera. La paleta se reduce y adquieren mayor relevancia los colores puros, que se ajustan a sectores precisos de la representación.

En Sin consuelo alguno (2002), por ejemplo, el fondo presenta una coloración ocre homogénea, mientras los soldados que la pueblan poseen uniformes de color azul y colorado.

Este último dato no es inocente. Para quienes conocen la historia nacional, el conflicto entre azules y colorados recuerda un momento preciso de las luchas intestinas dentro del ejército. Aun cuando la obra no remite a ningún acontecimiento específico, hay en ella una figura compuesta por una mitad femenina – circundada por la bandera argentina – y una mitad de vaca, que es sin dudas una alegoría de la República Argentina. Pero tanto ésta como los caballos que soportan a los militares se desplazan sobre plataformas con ruedas, dando a entender que son entidades semejantes a juegos infantiles.

El intertexto político no es casual. En los años inmediatamente posteriores a la crisis social e institucional de diciembre de 2001, éste aparece como horizonte de significación con frecuencia, ya sea de manera consciente o inconsciente. Los títulos de las obras de este período no dejan muchas dudas al respecto: Todos estamos sumergidos (2001), Está llegando al cuello (2002), Hambre de perros (2002), Sin consuelo alguno (2002), y El cartonero (2004).

Son trabajos creados en medio de una época oscura y dolorosa para el país, en un momento de incertidumbres y cuestionamientos que no podía dejar indiferente a nadie y que fue singularmente intenso en la producción de la mayoría de los artistas que lo atravesaron.

En forma paralela, se van diversificando los soportes y medios de producción. El lino se convierte en la superficie predilecta para llevar adelante estas piezas: del derecho o del revés, preparado o sin preparar, liso o tramado, comienza a intervenir con su singular materialidad y textura sobre los universos imaginarios que surgen de la mano de la artista. Sobre él se despliega una batería de herramientas para la creación: los acrílicos, la carbonilla, los pasteles, los pasteles-tiza, los marcadores. Cada una imprime su marca sobre el resultado final de acuerdo con la mayor o menor resistencia al desplazamiento que ejerce el soporte.

Por otra parte, Golubinsky trabaja sin bocetos. Toda la composición es creada directamente sobre la tela. Según relata la artista, las figuras aparecen en las imperfecciones del lino, en las manchas y las sombras, en las irregularidades y los pliegues; sólo hay que sacarlas a la luz. Con paciencia van surgiendo hasta que la totalidad cobra sentido. Este proceso puede llevar varios días e incluso no producirse jamás. Pero la autora se niega a forzar el resultado o a preparar unos borradores que pudieran ayudarla a arribar a un puerto prefijado. En la espontaneidad, la investigación y el hallazgo se cifra la clave de su método de creación.

Hacia 2004, las telas comienzan a poblarse de personajes voladores, acrobáticos, inestables. El espacio pictórico es ahora estrictamente vertical, con sectores bajos y elevados, y una composición plana que potencia las lecturas en la bidimensión. Los fondos tienden a ser homogéneos, aunque en ocasiones esbozan algún intento de volumen o la línea de un horizonte. Pero el peso visual está focalizado decididamente sobre las figuras, que adquieren un protagonismo incuestionable.

Algunas pinturas tematizan la aparición de estos personajes. Titiritero (2004), Colgados (2006), El circo (2006), Salto mortal (2006), Todos somos equilibristas (2006), Te sostengo (2008) justifican desde sus títulos la presencia de estos seres suspendidos o que intentan mantener el equilibrio. Este estado de zozobra aparece con frecuencia ligado al ámbito ur-

bano como en Congestionamiento (2006), El vestido azul (2006), No soy yo, es usted (2006), o Yo te embisto, tú me embistes (2007) pero muchas veces pareciera hablar más bien de una suerte de sentimiento de lo contemporáneo, de la complejidad del mundo actual y de sus consecuencias sobre los que lo padecemos a diario.

La generalización del desequilibrio construye escenas de un marcado dinamismo. En Del mismo palo (2005), personas y animales giran alrededor de unos ejes verticales que configuran una situación ágil, entre móvil y lúdica. En Colgados (2006) y Pájaros en la cabeza (2006) unos individuos se balancean agarrados a otros que desaparecen por el marco superior. Un poquito de viento (2006) se organiza sobre una composición centrífuga en la cual hombres, mujeres y perros –un animal que se repite con asiduidad en estos años– se van proyectando hacia los bordes de la tela con impulso angular. Algunos títulos apelan a los gerundios para enfatizar la imagen general de movimiento, como Soportando (2007) y Dando vueltas (2009).

Al mismo tiempo, un conjunto de obras exhibe un espacio fragmentado que introduce una cuota de estatismo, aunque sin eliminar por completo las tensiones. En Ayúdenme a salir (2008) la representación está dividida por una línea horizontal que separa un plano superior diáfano de un sector inferior atestado de transeúntes y vehículos hacinados. En Cuando Periquito era calvo (2009), Llueve en mi ciudad (2009), Se le subió a la cabeza (2009) y Me escuchas (2012) Golubinsky recurre a una grilla de pequeñas pinturas para segmentar la composición. Cada una de ellas desarrolla un relato simple y concentrado que, al multiplicarse, entra en relación con los universos complejos e intrincados de las telas mayores.

Por otra parte, y como una nueva marca de diferenciación, los colores han sido reducidos al blanco y el negro, con algunos toques de rojo que enfatizan líneas y manchas.

Acróbatas, contorsionistas, equilibristas, imprimen sobre estas obras un carácter espectacular. Todo se ofrece a la contemplación con un sentido exhibicionista que apela al espectador, aun cuando pareciera no existir esta misma voluntad al interior de los cuadros. En Mirame a los ojos (2006), por ejemplo, ninguno de los personajes cruza sus ojos. Éstos aparecen más bien como los actores de historias destinadas a la mirada exterior, y por tanto, involucran al observador. No es casual que muchos títulos sean frases basadas en apelativos: Soy la mujer de tus sueños (2006), Yo te embisto, tú me embistes (2007), No seas negativo (2008), A vos no te lo presto (2009), Ayúdenme a salir (2009) y ¡Cuidado! Me hacés ver las estrellas (2009).

Nelly Perazzo detecta sarcasmo en «este mundo funambulesco de personajes en posiciones acrobáticas y equilibrios imposibles». En todo caso, es evidente que hay un sentido trágico subyacente. Una capacidad para sortear obstáculos, acompañada por una incapacidad para la comunicación. Estos temas se van profundizando en los trabajos posteriores, a medida que estos simpáticos seres van dejando su lugar a la multitud.

entRe disputAs y festejos

El año 2010 deja su marca en la obra de Liliana Golubinsky. Los festejos del bicentenario de la Revolución de Mayo reavivan las reflexiones sobre la historia argentina y la realidad política del país. En este contexto, la artista ofrece su propia mirada sobre estos tópicos con la ironía y el humor que la caracterizan.

Bicentenario. Mirando la historia con ojos de niña (2010) adopta esta perspectiva crítica.

La obra está dividida en dos partes claramente diferenciadas. En la inferior, un grupo de pequeñas escolares parecen jugar y divertirse. Por encima de ellas, en una suerte de nube de historieta, aparecen diversos personajes asociados a la historia nacional: mujeres con abanicos y peinetones, soldados con escarapelas, el General San Martín y los picos de Los Andes, una virgen protectora. Pero el centro de la nube está ocupado por tres diablos rojos que también atraviesan como espectros la zona inferior del cuadro. Esta marca discordante obliga a repensar todo el conjunto. Al respecto, la artista hace referencia a la famosa frase «el diablo metió la cola», a las interferencias e imprevistos que siempre están a la vuelta de la esquina y que podrían cambiar el sentido de los festejos.

En esta misma línea de pensamiento, Golubinsky posa su atención sobre las figuras de los próceres, esas personas ensalzadas por la memoria, sobre las cuales, toda una sociedad deposita sus esperanzas. Su mirada, por supuesto, no es para nada condescendiente. Una pieza como El prócer tambalea (2011), lo pone de manifiesto de inmediato. Sin embargo, no se trata de echar por tierra a estos baluartes de la historia sin más. Se trata, en cambio, de formular una profunda reflexión sobre la heroicidad, sus posibilidades y consecuencias, pasadas, presentes y futuras. ¿En qué se han transformado los héroes de nuestra historia? ¿Cómo son instrumentados por los discursos que los convocan desde la actualidad?

En este sentido es interesante la obra que la artista dedica a la hazaña de nuestro héroe máximo en San Martín (2011). En ella, el cruce de la Cordillera de los Andes aparece como una tarea compleja, esforzada, titánica, que no es llevada adelante por una única persona, sino por un numeroso grupo de osados. Restituir el valor de lo colectivo y desacralizar los nombres propios es parte de un proceso revisionista que todavía nos queda por completar.

LA dinámicA de LAs muLtitudes

A medida que avanza el primer decenio del siglo XXI, Liliana Golubinsky va desarrollando y perfeccionando una forma de composición heterogénea, compleja y abigarrada. Las telas se pueblan de numerosos personajes que se aglutinan en masas informes y que transmiten el sentido del anonimato, propio de las grandes extensiones humanas. En su

interior, los individuos aparecen ocupados en actividades simultáneas e incongruentes.

Cada uno en su propio mundo, con poca percepción sobre los demás, lleva adelante unas tareas que no parecen aportar al beneficio del conjunto. Así, no hay un verdadero sentido de lo comunitario, sino más bien una conjunción de soledades reunidas en un espacio –por lo general muy estrecho– que pugnan por encontrar un lugar propio, sin lograrlo.

Familia numerosa (2009) es una de las primeras pinturas que exhiben este tipo de estructura. Aquí, personas de diferentes edades se distribuyen en hileras que van ocupando, de manera vertical, la totalidad del cuadro. Entre ellas hay niñas escolares, madres con bebés, señoras y señores, chicos y adultos, retratados de frente y de perfil y en las actitudes más diversas. Sólo los abuelos se separan del conjunto, generando un espacio singular que contrasta con la uniformidad del resto de la masa.

Sobre la base de esta estructura compositiva, Golubinsky ensaya una multiplicidad de soluciones que enriquecen su trabajo. A veces es posible identificar a cada uno de los personajes que integran una multitud –como en el tríptico Pateándola para otro día (2010) o en Todo es frágil (2011)–; otras veces, por el contrario, la masificación alcanza un grado tan elevado que apenas se distinguen algunos rasgos desdibujados de rostros perdidos, como en Mi mundo y el mío (2012), por ejemplo . A veces, las figuras se distribuyen libremente sobre un espacio diáfano logrando retener cierta identidad –como en Mi agüita (2012)–; otras veces, las muchedumbres son confinadas a porciones reducidas del espacio pictórico, que contrastan con otros de mayor amplitud y libertad –en Tirame un salvavidas (2012) o El miedo (2013), por ejemplo –. Finalmente, hay ciertas obras en las cuales las figuras se ubican en capas de diferente opacidad, creando un interesante efecto de simultaneidad –Día de campo (2013), por ejemplo –, y otras en las cuales los rostros que se amontonan generan efectos tridimensionales –como en Desde las sombras (2012)–. Todos estos recursos enaltecen la obra de Golubinsky otorgándole una visualidad siempre renovada.

Esta sumatoria casi compulsiva de criaturas y situaciones induce consecuencias sintácticas y semánticas. Ante todo, promueve el desenvolvimiento de una narrativa no lineal completamente a tono con el mundo contemporáneo. Las nuevas tecnologías nos han acostumbrado a distribuir la atención en informaciones instantáneas y simultáneas, que instan a construir relatos a partir de inputs parciales o fragmentados. Este tipo de atención es por demás pertinente a los trabajos de Liliana Golubinsky. Aquí, la acción general es el resultado de la adición de los acontecimientos unitarios, aun cuando éstos no sean nunca congruentes. Pero es que incluso esos acontecimientos no son en sí mismos completos.

Muchos apenas sugieren lo que son, otros son prácticamente irreconocibles, otros son engañosos. No obstante, reunidos en una totalidad, construyen una atmósfera dramática peculiar que no carece de sentido.

Por otra parte, este tipo de organización visual pone de manifiesto la confluencia de espacios y tiempos simultáneos, que muchas veces son igualmente incongruentes. Es común la inversión espacial: que los automóviles vuelen, que los edificios crezcan por debajo de las personas, que los animales floten patas para arriba, etcétera. También son habituales las distorsiones de escala que provocan un extrañamiento de la representación realista.

A veces, las situaciones parecen desarrollarse a diferente velocidad pero, sobre todo, la dislocación temporal se produce en el nivel de la contemplación. Al haber zonas con una concentración de actividades y otras con ausencia de éstas, el espectador se ve obligado a desplazarse visualmente sobre la superficie de la tela a diferentes velocidades, imprimiendo su propio ritmo sobre los universos imaginarios en función de su avidez e intereses.

El trabajo que realiza el ojo del espectador merece una consideración especial. Porque la multiplicidad de estímulos que recibe desde la superficie pictórica lo obliga a mantenerse casi en movimiento permanente. Este movimiento no se produce exclusivamente sobre la bidimensión de la representación plástica, sino también en una suerte de oscilación continua entre la proximidad y el alejamiento, que permite apreciar la pieza desde diferentes perspectivas. Efectivamente, ésta presenta distinta información visual desde cerca y desde lejos, y es tarea del espectador armonizar esta variedad de puntos de vista en la construcción de una totalidad que posea algún grado de coherencia que lo satisfaga. Este desplazamiento ocular contradice en alguna medida la organización espacial del cuadro.

Porque si bien ésta se articula sobre los ejes cartesianos del ancho y la altura, el ojo del observador circula libremente entre rostros, acciones y objetos que llaman su atención y que inducen una contemplación abierta y libre.

micRoRReLAtos y micRomundos

Las acciones individuales que realizan la mayoría de los integrantes de las multitudes que pueblan las obras de Golubinsky, promueven una estructura narrativa basada en microrrelatos. En ocasiones, éstos desintegran por completo la unidad enunciativa para proyectarse en una miríada de situaciones aisladas. En Mi agüita (2012) esto se percibe con claridad. Aquí, los personajes se distribuyen sobre la superficie de la tela, ubicados sobre pequeñas islas que les proveen un lugar propio. En cada una de ellas se llevan adelante las acciones más dispares: una pareja se besa, una mujer riega una casita en miniatura, un marinero es rodeado por barcos y otro mira por un catalejo; un pescador saca un pez del agua y lo coloca en la sartén de un cocinero que habita otra isla, una niña observa su reflejo mientras un señor abandona su sombra. No hay forma de establecer un eje que unifique a todos estos sucesos. Y es que, justamente, esta es la propuesta de la artista:

ofrecer una cosmología de seres y acontecimientos que permitan al espectador crear de manera lúdica su propia aproximación a la experiencia artística.

Sin embargo, a través de estas imágenes se desliza la mirada autoral de Golubinsky, una mirada que incomoda, que se sumerge en la profundidad, que señala puntos de conflicto.

En Tirame un salvavidas (2012) un amplio sector de la tela exhibe una carrera de rodados mientras en los sectores laterales, derecho e inferior, se apiña el público asistente. Pero visto desde cerca, se percibe que el público no está prestando atención a la disputa deportiva.

Hay una mujer desnuda y un hombre que pareciera cantarle una serenata. Otra mujer baila una danza. Hay parejas que se besan y un hombre que esgrime un garrote. Hay, incluso, un busto de un prócer, pájaros, perros y otros animales. Un hombre ubicado hacia la mitad del borde izquierdo tambalea rodeado por un salvavidas, mientras varias personas en la muchedumbre parecen jugar con estos elementos de salvataje. Pero nadie presta atención a la carrera. Algo similar sucede en La casa se está quemando (2014). En la parte inferior de la pintura, un grupo de personas mira hacia adelante o hacia al costado en diferentes actitudes.

Pero ninguna observa el magnífico incendio de un caserío que tiene lugar a sus espaldas.

Parecen anestesiadas, o perdidas, o indiferentes. Esta reacción –o, más bien, esta falta de reacción– formula un comentario sobre quienes habitamos el mundo actual, impulsados a ser cada vez más insensibles hacia las tragedias que se multiplican sobre el globo.

Todo es frágil (2011) agrega a este tipo de composición abigarrada, el recurso plástico del trabajo con diferentes marcadores que genera una superposición de figuras y acciones.

En primera instancia, la artista trabaja con tintas transparentes que crean un universo espectral. Luego utiliza un color semitransparente, como el amarillo, y agrega siluetas que por momentos se funden con las anteriores. Finalmente, emplea un marcador de una opacidad más neta, como el negro o gris, que añade otra capa figurativa que complejiza el conjunto. En esta pieza, la relación entre cercanía y lejanía es crucial, como lo son las interrelaciones de los diferentes registros y las asociaciones que se producen, voluntaria e involuntariamente, en la confrontación de los dibujos superpuestos.

Dos obras recientes se desvían un poco de los temas habituales en el trabajo de Liliana Golubinsky y pueden servir a manera de conclusión para este ensayo. Son las que llevan por título Los paraísos por encontrar I y II (2013). Se apartan del resto de su producción, principalmente, porque abordan la iconografía bíblica. En ambas aparecen los tópicos clásicos del libro del Génesis que relatan la transgresión a la ley de Dios, la expulsión del Edén y la instauración del Pecado Original: el árbol de la sabiduría, la manzana de la tentación, la serpiente, la desnudez cubierta por hojas de parra. Sin embargo, el tono general no es trágico sino más bien festivo. Como si el acceso al conocimiento fuera una suerte de liberación, de potencialidad inesperada, de futuro promisorio. Así parece confirmarlo el título.

En estas obras hay un ambiente juguetón y un sentido optimista que de alguna manera sintetizan el espíritu de toda la producción de la artista. Porque hasta los trabajos más críticos no abandonan nunca la perspectiva lúdica y humorística que fomenta la reflexión constructiva. Así como estas obras prometen paraísos por encontrar, las piezas más conflictivas describen el campo de operaciones de unas batallas que todavía se pueden ganar.

BIOGRAFÍA

Al abrir los ojos, un 9 de marzo de 1954, Liliana Golubinsky se asomó por vez primera al escenario de sus días: la ciudad de Buenos Aires.

Cosmopolita, tumultuosa, habitada por personajes dispares y plagada de situaciones inverosímiles, la metrópoli se ofrecía como campo de exploración a una niña ávida por crear su país de maravillas.

Su infancia transcurrió en los barrios de Villa del Parque y La Paternal, donde su padre tenía un negocio de máquinas de coser. Tímida y retraída -no le gustaba actuar en la escuela ni hablar en públicobuscaba refugio en la hoja de papel. En sus ratos de soledad, pintaba y dibujaba con lápices de colores, tizas y acuarelas.

Sus padres, incrédulos del oficio artístico, pensaban que la decisión de su hija de inscribirse en Bellas Artes era un hobby pasajero. Pero su ímpetu y la confianza en sí misma prevalecieron. En 1972 ingresó en la Academia de Bellas Artes Augusto Bolognini, donde estudió durante cuatro años para luego especializarse en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón. El geométrico Ary Brizzi, uno de sus maestros, le enseñó las vibraciones de los colores. Una tarde en la escuela Liliana le expresó su temor a olvidarse lo que había aprendido. Brizzi le contestó con una pregunta: «El bebé que aprende a caminar, cuando se sienta, ¿se olvida cómo se camina?».

A los 20 años se casó con Eduardo Krolovetzky, compañero de su vida toda. Pertinaz, ideó el nacimiento de sus hijos en los meses veraniegos de modo que no interfiriera con sus estudios. En 1978 nacía Guido y en 1981 Lucila. Pero Liliana no dejó pasar ni un día libre sin pintar.

Mientras cambiaba pañales y admiraba la obra de Toulouse-Lautrec, el living de su departamento se iba transformando en un pequeño taller.

Comenzó a frecuentar el taller del pintor Miguel Dávila. El compromiso y la generosidad de su mentor le permitieron que la estancia

durara ocho años, de 1978 a 1986. Al día de hoy, con Sasha Dávila suelen decir que son hijos del mismo padre.

Compartía el taller con Juan Lecuona, Silvana Blasbalg, Ana Erman e Inés Vega entre otros que iban en busca de su estética propia. Por esa época manejaba un Renault 4 azul metalizado. Un día frena en un semáforo rumbo al taller y un señor de saco blanco y sombrero que pasaba le toca el auto y levanta el pulgar con un gesto de aprobación. Era Antonio Seguí.

En 1980 realiza su primera muestra individual en la antigua Galería Lirolay. Sus pinturas atraviesan diversas temáticas y períodos que se debaten entre indagaciones sobre la forma y la plasticidad de los colores. Es tiempo de experimentación.

Corría el año 1984. El Teatro Colón realizaba una experiencia inusual: los bailarines ejecutaban pasos y piruetas mientras los artistas dibujaban, en penumbras, croquis para ballet. Liliana se destacó por la agilidad y el desenvolvimiento de sus dibujos. Ganó el premio de la primera ronda. Emocionada, subió al escenario de la mano del bailarín Gerardo Finn y el director del teatro, en ese entonces Cecilio Madanes, le entregó la distinción. Contaba ya con el Premio Cecilia Grierson del Salón Nacional de Pintura, que había obtenido en 1982.

Durante los años ‘90 pintó paisajes de imaginación, combinando mucha materia con horizontes múltiples. López Anaya destacaba: «Ha revalorizado el color, un color que se torna más y más saturado».

Siempre atenta a las manifestaciones de su memoria oculta, vienen a su encuentro sucesos mágicos, apariciones insospechadas de su inconsciente. En 1992 envía al Salón Provincial de Tucumán una obra titulada Paisaje Suizo que curiosamente fue integrada a otro concurso: el Salón de Paisaje. Viaja a Tucumán ya que resulta ganadora

del Primer Premio Adquisición al Paisaje Salón Timoteo Navarro. Al dar un paseo por la ciudad, se detiene en el Cerro San Javier. Allí descubre, para su sorpresa, que el paisaje que había pintado era igual al que estaba vislumbrando: el valle, las casas, la iglesia, las tumbas, los árboles. No era Suiza, era Tucumán. En la inauguración, esa misma tarde, el pintor Luis Felipe Noé miraba atentamente la obra y se preguntaba: «¿Por qué tendrá banderitas suizas un paisaje tucumano?».

«La obra de arte es necesariamente subjetiva y en lo fundamental autobiográfica. Sólo los verdaderos artistas son los que logran que esa subjetividad se haga también objetiva, a fin de que todos los demás participen de ella» decía Fermín Févre, su profesor de filosofía, en el prólogo a su muestra de 1993 en la Galeria Centoria.

En ese período, Liliana escribe: «Al cerrar los ojos vi el ancho mar, azul profundo, azul revuelto, luces rosadas, verdes, lilas […]. El viento pegándome en la cara, contuve la respiración, las velas de los barcos tensas, vibrantes… ¡volé por los aires!». Emergen en sus obras las batallas navales, los soldaditos, las procesiones, la cartografía, los caballos. Un espacio invadido por el uso del collage, el dibujo y la pintura. «Una Cruzada atemporal que transcurre sobre planos geográficos impresos en cuya superposición Jerusalén puede enfrentarse a la costa del Ecuador, y los ríos gigantes semejan ser un Nilo amazónico o un Mississippi africano» en palabras de Albino Diéguez Videla. Sin ortodoxia, sin premeditación, Liliana armaba mapas de territorios imaginarios utilizando guías turísticas y apropiándose de personajes de libros de cuentos y de historia.

De pequeña tenía un caballo de madera llamado Tatán que desapareció de repente y nunca más volvió a ver. Pero él retorna en sus obras, donde empiezan a aparecer caballos sin patas, con rueditas

o plataformas de madera. Tatán, Tatán. En el prólogo a su muestra de 1995, Raúl Santana contaba que Liliana «pareciera recrear la experiencia prístina de los niños, […] se comporta en las grandes telas como una niña que juega a ubicar sus caballos y soldaditos de plomo para comenzar la batalla».

Y también hubo letra. Una escritura automática que aludía, más que narrar. Un refuerzo de lo incomprensible de las batallas que se sucedían una y otra vez. Como en los cuentos de niños que escriben los adultos, hay risas, juegos y saltos pero también truculencia, impacto, shock. Eludiendo el sarcasmo, creaba un mundo de ironía.

El nuevo milenio la encontró con taller propio. Estaba tan ensimismada en su trabajo que cuando alguien la llamaba por teléfono le decía: «Dentro de una hora voy para Buenos Aires». El piso empezó a poblarse de seres que literalmente se escapaban de sus cuadros.

Se expresaba así el carácter que irían adquiriendo sus pinturas: una figuración abigarrada de personajes. Alberto Pío Rosales, un amigo que la visitó en ese momento, se imaginó a Liliana «descansando en un taller custodiado por un grupo de Ángeles, que número sacro de siete, transmiten la paz de estas batallas de la vida, como solo ellos pueden hacerlo». Con la pintura de su paleta dibuja elefantes, cabras, seres mitológicos, perros. Pompeya se había trasladado al barrio de Belgrano.

Una tarde en Casa FOA una arquitecta le dio la idea de hacer banquetas. Las pintaba con marcador, acrílico y pastel distribuyendo sus personajes por la tela y las patas de madera. Llegó a realizar hasta seis por día, pintando tarde y noche sin ayudantes. Del piso al techo, el taller se llenó de banquetas. La noticia llegó a España, donde se fascinaron tanto que comenzaron a importarlas: las banquetas que

iban para Barcelona tenían atada una cinta verde, las que iban para Madrid una cinta amarilla. Fue así como la convocaron a realizar muestras en esas dos ciudades y también en Bilbao.

En la feria de arteBA expuso banquetas y biombos. Allí el renombrado galerista Natalio Jorge Povarché se interesó por su obra. Desde el año 2003 -y hasta la actualidad- expone en Galeria Rubbers. Abandona el collage y las figuras recortadas por el dibujo de sus personajes citadinos. En el 2008 Julio Sánchez titulaba así el prólogo de su muestra Cuestión de actitud: «La perspectiva de sus cuadros no es geométrica y cohabitan varios códigos de representación: una figuración cercana a la historieta (sin serlo), expresionismo abstracto y escrituras». Liliana mira, ve, observa, pinta. Por arriba y por debajo del espacio pictórico se desplazan multitudes, nadadores, diablitos, héroes y heroínas de la existencia cotidiana.

La inquieta otro tipo de contemplación, más delicada. En sus viajes mira el paisaje humano. Los pequeños y sutiles gestos de las relaciones interpersonales: dos amigas conversando, la señora que cruza la calle, autos apilados en el tránsito, grupos festejando. Figuras que se dicen cosas en los títulos de sus obras: Yo te embisto, tú me embistes, Soy la mujer de tus sueños, No soy yo es usted, Mírame a los ojos y Me volvió a sangrar la herida. Murmullos cotidianos que contienen el valor de la anécdota. «Las imágenes se pueblan de significados, pensamientos, asociaciones, recuerdos» reflexiona Norberto Griffa en su muestra Visiones, del 2010. Ese año realizó la exposición Reflections of my Daily Life en la galería The Americas Collection de Miami. Allí confesaba que nunca trabaja con bocetos previos. Hay personajes que no recuerda haber hecho porque le “salen de adentro”, se le cruzan las imágenes en su deambular por

la ciudad, se impregnan con tanta fuerza que terminan desatando en la tela un sinnúmero de líneas y colores. No hay olvido, hay representación de lo vivido en constante fluir. Tan rápido afloran las figuras que muchas veces se pregunta si lo que acaba de dibujar no fue hecho por otra persona.

Tiempo de confidencias, su exposición del año 2012, afirma la naturaleza móvil de los caracteres en sus lienzos. Hay obras que se alteran con el paso del tiempo. Las figuras saltan de un cuadro a otro y el relato cobra, como en los polípticos, un ritmo incluso más desordenado. Compone sus pinturas sobre superficies de color: linos azules, marrones, grises, celestes. Denota en sus telas un lírico sarcasmo que la crítica Nelly Perazzo supo entrever en el prólogo del catálogo.

A simple vista, Liliana es una persona tranquila, risueña, relajada.

Afinando un poco más la mirada, se la descubre inquieta, ansiosa, sin la voluntad de soportar la espera. Suspendida en lo tragicómico, se aventura a dar cuenta de las acciones diarias en clave de cuento para niños. La parábola, sin embargo, es clara. No hay dobles sentidos. Los estereotipos que encontrábamos en los relatos infantiles parecen, finalmente, cobrar vida. Pues varias veces la artista admite haber conocido personas que antes vivieron en la superficie de sus obras. Su muestra más reciente en Galería Rubbers, año 2014, llevaba el acertado título de Sintonía y conjuro.

Liliana vive, pinta y sueña en Buenos Aires. Con los ojos abiertos al mundo, todos los días abandona la contemplación y como la Alicia de Lewis Carrol «sentada con los ojos cerrados, casi se creía en el país de las maravillas, aunque sabía que sólo tenía que abrirlos para que todo se transformara en obtusa realidad». O que sólo tenía que pintar, para transformar las fantasías y los sueños en una maravillosa realidad.

The artworks of the late 90s show a Liliana Golubinsky devoted to the task of erecting her imaginary universe from quotes and appropriations. Using the collage technique, she cuts out maps and characters of the history of art and glues them onto the canvas, shaping visual sets riddled with repetitions, tributes and resounding.

Some of the images are particularly recurrent, as in the Equestrian Portrait of the Count- Duque of Olivares, by Diego Velázquez, other horsemen and old ships. With all of them, she builds true war scenarios – as in Won Battle (1995) - or paintings related to war attacks and conquests - Each one serving their game (1999), Storm at sea (1999), The Precession (2000)-. In all cases, the space is designed through the use of the driven back plane, which translates the horizontal positions into vertical locations, giving a complete and instant vision to the viewer, of everything that is happening in it. The painting is built with glazes and overlapping layers, which give it a density and an obscurity that contrast with the lightness of her later productions.

Many of these paintings are often crossed by an automatic writing which configures an underground layer, at the same time textual and visual. A narrative substrate is unfolded on it and could perfectly work as some sort of historic memory. However, its content is incomprehensible - or rather, it can only be apprehended in fragments. Thus, it is more evocative than informative: it does not intend to reveal the meaning of the representation but it makes it more complex with an open element to signification.

All along these years, some marks begin to appear which still continue – and even deepen-in later works. One of them has to do

The artist´s fear when confronted with the whiteness of the canvas is like the one of the writer facing the empty sheet. It is an existential paralysis that does not have much to do with the possibility of not achieving a significant image or writing, but with the danger of not being able to set in motion the creative process that sustains the author in his place. Every time a piece of art is undertaken, a battle is initiated, which is, in the first place, a personal crusade. It is the struggle to keep the passion, the vocation and the energy that build up the spinal column of the artist´s everyday work.

Liliana Golubinsky´s paintings extend this dynamic to the pictorial field itself. On its surfaces, the characters and the events cram together in some sort of agonic fight, heterogeneous but productive.

A vibrant movement that runs through the fabrics, providing them with a singular life, a vitality that is almost instantly transferred to the observer´s eye and which finds its calmness only when the conglomerates of images reveal themselves in their metaphors and meanings.

Although the motives have been changing with the passing of time, the dynamic construction of plastic space is an authorial stigma that insists on translating the complexity of our contemporary world. In fact, there are numerous references to current life, to the troubles we face in our everyday reality, to the values and peculiarities that dictate ways of being and thinking. But all these amnesties appear mostly in playful shapes, in visual games and ironies, in situations that shape a critical perspective founded on a cute personal view.

with the titles. In many cases, they come from the popular culture, idioms, songs, movies, sayings, etc.- That ermine overcoat (1997), Each one serving their game (1999), The Lieutenant´s little donkey (2002)-.In this period the ironic, critical and mocking view is also present and it will be maximized later on. In The carousel spins round (1997), for instance, the horsemen ride wheeled horses and the battle has turned into a real game.

Another important aspect is found in its narrative nature. All Golubinsky´s artworks possess some kind of plot substrate, even if it is not evident at first sight. But the most outstanding feature is that it is erected over a multitude of micro-stories, many times incongruent, which only seem to be compatible because of space proximity. If one gazes at them closely, it is possible to notice the lack of interconnection among the characters that live in the canvas and among the events that each of them is carrying out. This feature will deepen in later years, when the subjects lose the patina of the historic story-line to tackle the contemporary world. Here, the multitudes are formed by individuals with lonely attitudes, isolated, devoted to specific tasks of their environment, prisoners of indifference, lack of interest or alienation.

At the dawn of the millennium, Golubinsky´s paintings begin to suffer an important transformation. Together with some figures borrowed from the history of art, which are painted on the canvas now (and not cut out or glued), some others emerge, invented by her, quickly depicted, with simple but convincing features. The academic critic of art Nelly Perazzo, is right when she affirms that, with this decision, the artist “starts speaking by herself instead of doing it in third person”.

This process occurs gradually. In artworks such as Whitening stories (2002), the horsemen and the ship coexist with a multitude of human figures which, from a second plane, demand attention to their presence. As these figures gain leadership, the materiality

and the composition of the canvas change. The painting is paving its way to the drawing as a visual axis and becomes more superficial. The palette is reduced and the pure colors, which adjust to precise sectors of the representation, gain more relevance. In With no consolation at all (2002), for instance, the background presents a homogeneous ocher coloration, while the soldiers that inhabit it wear blue and red uniforms.

This latter reference is not innocent. For those who know the national history, the conflict between blues and reds reminds us of a precise moment of intestine fights within the army. Even when the artwork refers to no specific event, there is a figure on it composed by a feminine half surrounded by the Argentine flag and a cow half, which is no doubt an allegory of the Argentine Republic. This, as well as the one about the wheeled horses which carry the military men on them, move on the platforms implying that they are child game entities.

The political inter-text is not fortuitous. All along the years posterior to the social and institutional crisis of December 2001, it frequently appears, either consciously or unconsciously, as a horizon of significance. The titles of the paintings in this period leave no room for doubt in that respect: We are all submerged (2001), It is coming up to the neck (2002), Dog hunger (2002), With no consolation at all (2002), The cardboard-man (2004). They are artworks created amidst a dark and painful period for the country, in a period of uncertainty and questioning, which could leave nobody indifferent, and which was singularly intense for the production of most of the artists of that time.

Parallel to this, the bases and means of production are being diversified. Linen becomes the favorite surface to carry forward these pieces: inside out, prepared or not, plain or hatched, it starts to intervene with its singular materiality and texture in the imaginary worlds that come from the hand of the artist. A set of tools for creation is unfolded : the acrylics, the coal, the pastels, the chalk pastels, the markers. Each one prints its mark on the final product with more or less resistance, according to the movement that the stand asks for.

On the other hand, Golubinsky works with no sketches. All the composition is created directly on the canvas. According to the artist, the figures appear among the linen imperfections, on the stains and shadows, among the irregularities and folds; you only have to give them birth. With patience, they start emerging until the whole gains meaning. This process may take many days, or even, it may never occur. But the author refuses to force any draft or to prepare sketches which could eventually help her to achieve her objective. It is in the spontaneity, the investigation and the finding, where she finds the key to her method of creation.

equiLibRists

By the year 2004, the canvases start being inhabited by flying, acrobatic, instable characters. The pictorial space is now strictly vertical, with low and high sectors, and a flat composition that maximizes bi-dimensional readings. The backgrounds tend to be homogeneous though, in occasions, they outline some attempt of volume or horizon line. But the visual weight is definitely focused on the figures that acquire an unquestionable leadership.

Some paintings make their themes with the appearance of these characters. Puppeteer (2004), Hanging (2006), The Circus (2006), Mortal jump (2006), We are all equilibrists (2006), I hold you (2008), justify from their titles the presence of these beings who are hanging in the air or trying to keep the balance. This feeling of anguish frequently appears connected to the urban area - as in Overcrowding (2006), The blue dress (2006), It´s not me, it´s you (2006), I assault you, you assault me (2007) – but many times, she seems to be speaking about some sort of contemporary feeling, about the complexity of the world and the consequences we suffer in our everyday lives.

The generalization of imbalance builds scenes of marked dynamism.

In Belonging to the same side (2005), people and animals orbit vertical axes which configure an agile situation, mobile and playful. In Hanging (2006) and Birds in the head (2006), some individuals taking hold of others, balance and disappear towards the top frame. A bit

of wind (2006) is organized over a centrifugal composition in which men, women and dogs (animal that frequently appears during these years) keep projecting to the edges of the canvas with angular impulse. Some of the titles appeal to gerunds to emphasize the general image of movement, such as Bearing (2007) and Circling (2009).

At the same time, a set of artworks exhibits a fragmented space that introduces some share of statism without eliminating the tensions completely, though. In Help me to get out (2008), the representation is divided by a horizontal line that separates a diaphanous higher plane from a lower sector crowded with crammed pedestrians and vehicles. In When Periquito was bare (2009), It rains in my city (2009), It goes to the head (2009) and Are you listening to me?

(2012), Golubinsky resorts to a grid of small paintings to segment the composition. Each of them develops a simple and condensed story which, as it multiplies, comes to terms with the complex and intricate worlds of the bigger canvas. On the other side, and as a distinctive mark, the colors have been reduced to black and white, with some red touches which emphasize lines and stains.

Acrobats, contortionists, equilibrists print a spectacular nature on these artworks. Everything is offered to contemplation with an exhibitionist sense that appeals to the spectator, even when this volition does not seem to exist towards the interior of the paintings; in Look into my eyes (2006), for instance, none of the characters crosses glance. They appear to be the actors of stories destined to the exterior look and therefore, they involve the observer. It is not accidental that many titles are phrases based upon appellations: I am the woman of your dreams (2006), I assault you, you assault me (2007), Don´t be negative (2008), I don´t lend it to you (2009), Help me to get out (2009) Beware! You make me see the stars (2009).

Nelly Perazzo detects sarcasm in this “extravagant world of characters in acrobatic positions and impossible equilibriums”. In any case, it is evident that there is an underlying tragic sense: a capacity to overcome obstacles, accompanied by an incapacity for communication. These subject matters deepen in her later artworks, as these friendly characters give way to the multitude.

tHe dynAmic of tHe muLtitudes

The year 2010 leaves its mark on Liliana Golubinsky´s artwork. The bicentennial celebrations of the May Revolution revive reflections upon the Argentinian history and the political situation in the country. In this context, the artist offers her own view over these topics with the irony and humor that characterize her.

Bicentennial. Looking into history through the eyes of a girl (2010) adopts this critical perspective. The artwork is divided into two clearly differentiated parts. In the lower part, some small school girls seem to have fun and play. Above them, in some kind of cartoon cloud, different characters associated with the national history turn up: women with fans and hair combs, soldiers with badges, General San Martin, and the Andes mountaintops, a protecting virgin. But the centre of the cloud is filled by three devils which also cross, like ghosts, the lower part of the painting. This discordant mark forces to re-think the whole. In that respect, the artist makes reference to the famous phrase “the devil put its tail into it”, to the interferences and incidentals which may always be there, round the corner, and which may change the sense of the celebrations.

In this same line of thought, Golubinsky focuses her attention on the figures of the national leaders, these people exalted by memory, in which the society as a whole places its hopes. Her view, of course, is not at all indulgent. A piece like The National hero staggers (2011) makes this evident at once. However, it is not a question of wrecking these history bastions without thought. On the contrary, it has to do with prescribing a profound reflection on the heroism, its possibilities and consequences, past, present and future. What have our history heroes been turned into? How are they being instrumented by the speeches which evoke them in the present?

In this sense, it is interesting to notice the artist ´s devotion to the feat of our greatest hero, San Martin (2011). In this artwork, the crossing of the Andes Mountains appears to be a complex, forced and titanic task, which is not carried out by one person, but by a numerous group of daring people. Bringing back the collective value and losing the sacred nature of the proper names is part of a revisionist process that we still have to complete.

As the first decade of the 21st century pushes forward, Liliana Golubinsky keeps developing and improving a heterogeneous, complex and crammed composition form. The fabrics are dwelled by numerous characters that agglutinate into vague masses and transmit the anonymity sense, typical of the large human extensions. Inside, the individuals seem to be busy in simultaneous and incongruent activities. Each of them in its own world, with little perception of others, carries out tasks which do not seem to provide any benefit to the whole. Thus, there is no true community sense, but a joint of solitudes gathered in one space- in general very close - struggling to find a place of belonging and failing in achieving their goal.

Large family (2009) is one of the first paintings which exhibit this kind of structure. Here, people of different ages distribute themselves in rows, occupying the whole of the painting in a vertical fashion. Among them, there are school girls, mothers with babies, ladies and gentlemen, children and adults, face and profile, and in the most diverse attitudes. Only the grandparents are separated from the whole, generating a singular space which contrasts with the uniformity of the rest of the mass. On the basis of this compositional structure, Golubinsky rehearses multiple solutions that enrich her work. At times, it is possible to identify each of the characters that take part in a multitude- as in the triptych Kicking it for another day (2010) or in Everything is fragile (2011)-; some other times, on the contrary, the popularization reaches such a high extent, that you can hardly distinguish blurred features of lost faces- as in My world and mine (2012), for example - . Sometimes, the figures distribute themselves freely on a diaphanous space managing to retain certain identity – as in My tiny water (2012) -; some other times, the crowds are confined to reduced portions of the pictorial space, which contrast with others of a freer and broader magnitude- as in Throw a life-buoy to me (2012) or The fear (2013), for example-. Finally, there are certain artworks in which the figures locate in different layers of opacity, creating an interesting simultaneity effect- Country day (2013) for instance-, and others in

which the faces that pile up generate tridimensional effects- as in From the shadows (2012) -. All these resources exalt Golubinsky´s artwork providing it with an always renewed visuality.

This almost compulsive sum of creatures and situations induces to semantic and syntactic consequences. In the first place, it promotes the development of a non-lineal narrative in terms with the contemporary world. The new technologies have been making us distribute the attention on instant and simultaneous information, which urge us to build stories out of partial or fragmented inputs.

This type of attention is extra relevant in Liliana Golubinsky´s artworks. Here, the general action is the result of the addition of the unitary events, even when they are never congruent. But even these events are not in themselves complete.

Many of them hardly suggest what they are; others are practically unrecognizable, others misleading. However, gathered in a totality, they build a dramatic and peculiar atmosphere which is not lacking in sense.

On the other hand, this type of organization makes the confluence of simultaneous times and spaces evident, which many times are equally incongruent. The spatial inversion is common: cars that fly, buildings that grow below the people, animals floating upside down, so on and so forth. Distortions in scale which provoke an alienation of the realistic representation are also habitual. Sometimes, the situations seem to develop at a different pace but above all, the temporal dislocation is produced at the contemplation level. Since there are zones with concentration of activities and others with an absence of them, the spectators are forced to move visually all over the surface of the fabric at different speeds, printing their own rhythm on the imaginary universes according to their eagerness and interests.

The work done by the on-looker eye deserves a special consideration because the multiplicity of stimuli the eye receives from the pictorial surface forces it to keep in almost permanent motion.

This movement is not exclusively produced in the bi-dimension of the plastic representation, but also, in some kind of oscillation be-

tween proximity and remoteness, which allows appreciation of the piece from different perspectives. Effectively, it presents different visual information from near and from far, and it is the on-looker´s task to harmonize this variety of points of view in the construction of a totality that possesses some kind of coherence which may satisfy him. This ocular shifting contradicts, somehow or other, the spatial organization of the painting. Because, even though this is articulated over the Cartesian axes of width and height, the observer´s eye circles freely among faces, actions and objects that call its attention and that lead to an open and free contemplation.

micRo-stoRies And micRo-woRLds

The individual actions performed by most of the members of the multitudes that dwell in Golubinsky´s artworks, promote a narrative structure based upon micro-stories. Sometimes, they disintegrate the declarative unit completely to project themselves in a myriad of isolated situations. In My tiny water (2012), this is clearly perceived. Here, the characters distribute on the surface of the fabric, located on small islands which provide them with a place of their own. On each of them, the most unequal actions are carried out: a couple kissing, a woman watering a miniature house, one sailor surrounded by boats and another looking through a spyglass, a fisherman pulling a fish from the water and putting it into the pan of a chef who inhabits another island, a little girl watching her reflection as a man is leaving his shadow. There is no way to establish an axis that unifies all these happenings. And, precisely, this is the proposal of the artist: offering a cosmology of beings and events that allow the viewer to create its own approach playfully to the artistic experience. However, through these images, Golubinsky´s authorial look slides, a look that provides discomfort, that is immersed in the depths, and which points at trouble spots. In Throw a life-buoy to me (2012), a large part of the fabric exhibits a car-race while in the lower right side sectors, the audience crowds together. But when seen up close, it is perceived that

the public is not paying attention to the sports dispute. There is a naked woman and a man who seems to sing a serenade to her.

Another woman is dancing some dance. There are couples kissing each other and a man who wields a club. There is even a bust of a hero, birds, dogs and other animals. A man surrounded by a lifebuoy and located towards the middle of the left edge is staggering, while several people in the crowd seem to play with these saving gadgets. But nobody pays attention to the race. Something similar happens in The house is burning (2014). At the bottom of the painting, a group of people are looking forward or to the side in different attitudes. But nobody seems to see the magnificent fire of a village that is taking place behind their backs. They seem to be anesthetized, or lost, or indifferent. This response –or rather, this unresponsiveness- makes a comment on those who inhabit the world today, driven to become increasingly insensitive to the tragedies that multiply over the globe.

Everything is fragile (2011) adds to this overloaded type of composition, the plastic resource of the artwork with different markers which generates an overlap of figures and actions. At first, the artist works with transparent inks that create a spectral universe.

Then she uses a semi-transparent color, like yellow, and adds silhouettes which, at times, merge with the others. Finally, she uses a marker of a net opacity, such as black or gray, which adds another figurative layer that complicates the entirety. In this piece, the relationship between proximity and distance is crucial, as crucial as the interrelationships of the various registers and associations that occur, voluntarily and involuntarily, in the confrontation of the overlapping drawings.

Two recent artworks deviate a little from the usual issues in Liliana Golubinsky´s work and can serve as a conclusion to this essay.

They are the ones bearing the title Paradises to be found I and II (2013). They deviate from the rest of her production, mainly because they address the biblical iconography. In both, the classical topics of the Genesis Book appear telling about the transgression of God´s law, the expulsion from Eden and the establishment of

the Original Sin: the tree of knowledge, the apple of temptation, the serpent, nudity covered with grape leaves. However, the overall tone is not tragic but rather festive. As if the access to knowledge was a kind of liberation, of unexpected potentiality, a promissory future. The title seems to confirm this.

In these artworks there is a playful atmosphere and a sense of optimism that somehow synthesize the spirit of the entire production of the artist. Because even the most critical works never lose the playful and humorous perspective that encourages constructive thinking. In the same way these artworks promise paradises to be found, the most conflicting pieces describe the area of operations of battles that can still be won.

biographY Opening her eyes, a March 9th, 1954, Liliana Golubinsky looked into the stage of her days for the first time: the city of Buenos Aires. Cosmopolitan, tumultuous, inhabited by unequal characters and full of unrealistic situations, the metropolis offered itself as a field of exploration for a girl, eager to create her wonderland.

Her childhood was spent in the neighborhoods of Villa del Parque and Paternal, where her father owned a sewing- machine- shop.

Shy and introverted- did not like acting at school or talking in public-, she used to seek refuge in the paper sheet. In her moments of solitude, she would paint and draw with color pencils, chalk and watercolors. Her parents, in disbelief of the artistic job, thought their daughter´s decision to enroll in Fine Arts was a temporary hobby. But her momentum and self-confidence prevailed. In 1972 she entered the Augusto Bolognini Fine Arts Academy, where she studied for four years and then specialized in the Prilidiano Pueyrredón National Fine Arts School. The geometrician Ary Brizzi, one of her teachers, taught her the vibrations of colors. One afternoon at school, Liliana expressed her fear to forget what she had learned.

Brizzi replied with a question: does the baby who already learned to walk, forget about walking after learning to sit down?

At the age of 20 she married Eduardo Krolovetzky, her lifetime companion. Pertinacious, she planned the birth of her children in the summer months so as not to interfere with her studies. In 1978 Guido was born and Lucila, in 1981. But Liliana spent no day without painting. As she changed diapers while admiring Toulouse-Lautrec´s artwork, her living-room was turning into a small workshop.

She began to frequent the studio of the painter Miguel Dávila.

The commitment and generosity of her mentor allowed her to stay for eight years, from 1978 to 1986.Today, Sasha Dávila and she often say they are children of the same father.

She shared the workshop with Juan Lecuona, Silvana Blasbalg, Ana Erman and Inés Vega, among others, who went in search of their

own aesthetic. By that time, she used to drive a metallic blue Renault 4. One day, she stops at the traffic- lights on the way to her workshop and a passing- by man in white coat and hat, touches her car and lifts his thumb with a nod. It was Antonio Seguí.

In 1980 she makes her first solo exhibition in the former Lirolay Gallery. Her paintings go through various themes and periods which are torn between inquiries upon the form and the plasticity of colors. It is experimentation time.

The year was 1984. The Colon Theatre conducted an unusual experience: the dancers executed steps and pirouettes while the artists were drawing ballet sketches in the darkness. Liliana excelled for the agility and the development of her drawings. She won the first round award. Excited, she climbed the stage in the hand of the dancer Gerardo Finn and the then theatre director, Cecilio Madanes, handed the distinction to her. She already had the Cecilia Grierson Award of the National Painting Salon, which she obtained in 1982.

During the 90s she painted landscapes of imagination, combining a lot of stuff with multiple horizons. López Anaya stressed, “ has revaluated color, a color that becomes more and more saturated”. Always attentive to the manifestations of her hidden memory, magical events and unexpected appearances of her unconscious mind come to meet her. In 1992, she sends a work entitled “Swiss landscape” to the Tucuman Provincial Salon, which was curiously integrated to another contest: Hall of Landscape. She travels to Tucuman after winning the First Prize of the Acquisition Landscape Timoteo Navarro Hall. While going for a stroll in the city, she stops at Cerro San Javier. To her surprise, she discovered that the landscape she had painted was the same as the one she was glimpsing: the valley, the houses, the church, the tombs, the trees. It was not Switzerland, it was Tucuman. At the opening, that same evening, the painter Luis Felipe Noé watched the work closely and wondered, “Why does a Tucumán landscape have these little Swiss flags?”

“The artwork is necessarily subjective and essentially autobiographical. Only the true artists manage to make that subjectivity objective so that everyone else participates in it”, Fermin Févre, her philosophy professor, said in the preface to his 1993 exhibition at Centoria Gallery.

In that period, Liliana writes: “when I closed my eyes I saw the wide sea, deep blue, scrambled blue, and pink, green, lilac lights. ( … ) The wind hitting my face made me held my breath, the strained, vibrant sailings of the boats … I flew in the air”.

Her works emerge in the naval battles, the soldiers, the processions, the cartography and the horses. A space invaded by the use of collage, drawing and painting. “A timeless Crusade is taking place on printed geographic planes in whose overlapping, Jerusalem can face the coast of Ecuador and the giant rivers resemble an Amazonian Nile or an African Mississippi”, in the words of Albino Diéguez Videla. Without any orthodoxy, nor premeditation, Liliana would build maps out of imaginary territories using guidebooks and taking possession of storybook and history characters.

As a girl, she had a wooden horse called Tatan, which suddenly disappeared and which she never saw again. But he returns in her artworks, where either wheeled or legless or on wooden platforms, horses begin to appear. Tatan, Tatan. In the preface to his 1995 exhibition, Raúl Santana said that Liliana “seems to recreate the pristine experience of children, (…) behaves like a child in the large canvases playing to locate her horses and her toy soldiers in order to kick off the battle.”

And there were lyrics, too. An automatic writing which referred, more than narrate. It is a reinforcement of the incomprehensibility of the battles that occurred again and again. As in child stories that adults write, there is laughter, games and jumps, but also, truculence, impact and shock. Eluding sarcasm, she created a world of irony.

The new millennium made her owner of a workshop. She used to be so engrossed in her work, that when someone phoned her, she would say:”within an hour, I´ll be back in Buenos Aires”. The floor

started getting crowded with beings that literally escaped from her paintings. Thus, the character her paintings would acquire expressed itself: a heterogeneous figuration of characters. Alberto Pío Rosales, a friend who visited her at that time, imagined Liliana “resting in a workshop guarded by a group of angels, who, sacred number seven, transmit the peace of these life battles, just as only they can do”. With the paint of her palette, she draws elephants, goats, mythological beings, dogs. Pompeii has moved to the neighborhood of Belgrano.

One evening in FOA House, an architect gave her the idea of stools. She painted them with marker, acrylic and pastel, distributing her characters all over their fabrics and their wooden legs. She managed to manufacture up to six stools per day, painting night and day, without any assistants. From the ceiling to the floor, the workshop was filled with stools. The news reached Spain, where they became so fascinated that they began to import them: the ones that went to Barcelona had a green ribbon and the ones that went to Madrid had a yellow one. Thus, she was summoned to make samples in these two cities and in Bilbao, too.

At the ArteBA fair she exhibited stools and screens. There, the renowned gallery owner Natalio Jorge Povarché got interested in her work. Since the year 2003- and even today- she exhibits in Rubbers Gallery. She changes the collage and the cutouts for the drawing of her citizen-characters. In 2008, Julio Sánchez headlined his preface to his exhibition Question of attitude in this way: “The perspective of her paintings is not geometric, and various codes of representation cohabit: a figuration close to the comic strip (without being that), an abstract expressionism and writings”. Liliana looks, sees, watches and paints. Crowds, swimmers, devils, heroes and heroines of everyday existence move from one place to the other all above and below the pictorial space.

She is disturbed by another kind of contemplation, a more delicate one. On her journeys she sees the human landscape. She sees the small, subtle gestures of interpersonal relationships. Two friends

talking, a lady crossing the street, cars piled up in transit, groups celebrating. Figures saying things to each other in the titles of her works: I assault you, you assault me, I am the woman of your dreams, It´s not me, it´s you, Look into my eyes and My wound started bleeding again. Daily murmurs containing the value of the anecdote.

“The images are populated by meanings, thoughts, associations and memories” reflects Norberto Griffa in his exhibition Visions, in 2010. In that year, she made the exposition Reflections of my Daily Life in The Americas Collection Gallery in Miami. There, she confessed that she never works with previous sketches. There are characters she does not remember to have made because “they come from within”, the images cross her mind as she wanders around the city, they impregnate with such a force , that end up unleashing a myriad of lines and colors in the fabric.

There is no oblivion but representation of what has been lived in constant flow. The figures emerge so quickly that, many times, she wonders if what she has just drawn was not done by someone else.

Time for confidences, her exhibition in 2012, affirms the mobile nature of the characters in her canvases. There are artworks that are altered with the passing of time. The figures leap from one picture to another and, as in the polyptychs, the rhythm of the story becomes even messier. She composes her paintings on surfaces of color: blue, brown, gray, light-blue linens. She denotes a lyrical sarcasm in her fabrics, which the critic Nelly Perazzo could glimpse in the foreword of the catalogue.

At first glance, Liliana is a quiet, cheerful, relaxed person. Perfecting the look a little, one discovers a restless, anxious person, unable to put up with waiting. Suspended in the tragicomedy, she ventures to give an account of daily actions in a children´s story fashion.

The parable, however, is clear. There are no double meanings. The stereotypes that we used to find in the stories for children seem to come to life in the end. Because, many times, the artist admits to have met people who formerly lived on the surface of her artworks.

Her most recent exhibition at the Rubbers Gallery, year 2014, carried the accurate title of Tune and spell.

Liliana lives, paints and dreams in Buenos Aires. With her eyes open to the world, she abandons contemplation everyday and, like Alice by Lewis Carrol, “sitting with her eyes closed, almost imagined herself in Wonderland, although she knew she only had to open them in order to see everything transformed into a dull reality”. Or rather, she just had to paint to transform fantasies and dreams into a wonderful reality.
