gratitude 2017

On Saturday, February 4, 2017, the eighth annual Enduring Gratitude event was hosted by Beaver Pond Sporting Club in Snow Camp, NC. We were blessed by a beautiful sunny day with mid 40’s temperature, perfect for our pheasant tower shoot, sporting clay course competition and barbeque lunch. We were honored to sponsor 122 Veteran and active members of the world’s finest forces of the United States Military. A dedicated group of 192 volunteers made this special day of fun and fellowship possible, for this opportunity to express our deepest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to these brave patriot Americans for their service to our Country. It is a day when we are reminded that these individuals volunteered of their own free will to defend and protect our unequalled freedom and privileges. They put their lives on the line every minute of every day. We are forever indebted to them and they have our eternal respect and admiration. It is always humbling for us to hear of the many experiences shared with us by the veterans. No matter how horrific or debilitating, their stories always end by them saying, “I have no regrets and I would do it again no matter what.” Here are a couple emails we received from our veterans: “I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and thank you for sponsoring such an amazing event. Josh (Navy submariner) and I (US Marine) thoroughly enjoyed the day, not to mention so many great Veterans. I also want to compliment the many volunteers who treated the Veterans with the upmost respect and kindness. As Veterans we do not look for praise and adoration, we served our Country proudly, came home and lived our lives as Americans. I can’t remember being in such an event as Enduring Gratitude and being treated with such kindness and appreciation as we were by your staff and volunteers. Thank you again for a wonderful event and looking out for those who have served and those who are serving this great country.” Semper Fi - Robert O’Hanlon “Thank you guys for all you did to put on a great event making this a wonderful experience for all the Vets that participated. This event allowed my brother, his son (and my nephew) and myself to come and enjoy a day together doing something we really enjoy while in a relaxed atmosphere (yes, even while rounds are flying…we are relaxed and embedded in and amongst our own). I would like to thank all the volunteers that made this day possible. We left uplifted, yet humbled from the words of your guest speaker and what he went through. Truly inspirational!” Thanks Again, Jerry Halford - Sgt/USMC Retired Each year we are honored to have individuals of great valor to be our guest speakers. In the past, heroes have included Navy Commander (retired) Porter A. Halyburton – Vietnam POW for 7 years, Staff Sergeant and Pathfinder (retired) Chris Williams. This year Air Force Colonel (retired) Norman McDaniel, Vietnam POW for 6 ½ years shared his experiences that provided inspiration for us all.

Colonel McDaniel detailed the extreme physical torture and relentless psychological interrogation he endured as a POW. He stated that ultimately it was his unbreakable faith in God and the relentless determination to be reunited with his family that provided him the strength and intestinal fortitude to withstand the inhuman treatment and brutality of the Vietcong. His motto was simple and straight forward. “No matter what problems we have, we must face them together and with a constant positive attitude.” We were especially honored to have a member of our country’s greatest generation to take part in this year’s event. World War II Veteran Mr. Louis W. Jones (Louie) was a US Navy sailor and a torpedo man/ electrician 1st class. He served in the Pacific theatre on the USS Bushnell, a sub tender, from 1943 to 1946. The USS Bushnell would supply and resupply submarines in port between missions. Louie saw action in Midway IS, Okinawa, Marshall IS and Iwo Jima. It was so humbling as Louie shared several stories. He told us that over the years many people would ask him if he had been scared during times of combat in the war. He would simply answer, “I joined the Navy right after I graduated from high school when I was 17 years old…nobody ever told me I was supposed to be scared.” The highlight of this year’s event was when Louie shot not one, but two pheasants. We plucked some feathers and he fitted them in his hat. Grinning ear to ear he said “nobody has had more fun than me today.” This is what Enduring Gratitude is all about. To our sponsors and volunteers, we sincerely thank you for your generous financial support and the thousands of man hours it takes for the success of our event. You are true Americans. The pictures in this year’s journal depict the story about this year’s event. We hope you enjoy it. We look forward to seeing you again in February 2018. God bless you all.
