Prawda sztuki nie ma wstrętu do liczby mnogiej, obecności innych sensów nie odbiera jak policzka wymierzonego własnej sensowności. Wie, że sensów jest wiele, że może ich być więcej jeszcze i cieszy się, gdy do ich liczby coś od siebie doda.”

Galeria sztuki współczesnej to nie muzeum, któremu upływające lata automatycznie dodają dostojeństwa, szacunku, powagi. Te wartości niekoniecznie są dla galerii najważniejsze… Jednak 70 lat istnienia Wozowni w Toruniu ma znaczenie. Świadczy chociażby o upartym uznawaniu sztuki za wyjątkowy i niezwykle znaczący obszar działalności człowieka. To przekonanie, a także otwartość i ciekawość, pozwalały nam towarzyszyć artystkom i artystom, krytyczkom i krytykom sztuki przez te wiele lat różnych zmian. Kiedy Wozownia startowała – jeszcze jako BWA – i sztuka, i wystawiennictwo bliższe były bardziej XIX wiekowi niż czasom dzisiejszym. Jubileusz natomiast obchodzimy w momencie, kiedy – w obliczu pandemii koronawirusa i kryzysu ekologicznego – problemem staje się nadprodukcja w świecie sztuki, kiedy większe znaczenie zyskuje nie tworzenie tradycyjnego, autorskiego dzieła, a działania wspólne, zaangażowane czy przynajmniej zorientowane na rzeczywistość. Przeszliśmy w galerii z wieku XX do XXI, do działań w rzeczywistości realnej dodajemy coraz większą aktywność w przestrzeni internetowej. Obok wystaw równorzędną częścią naszej działalności stały się spotkania, wykłady, warsztaty… Myślę, że galeria pozostanie miejscem prezentacji sztuki, bo i wystawiennictwo jest przecież formą komunikacji, ale też będzie w coraz większym stopniu miejscem dyskursu, miejscem otwartym na różne działania kreatywne. Podobnie jak prawda sztuki u Baumana, tak i my nie mieliśmy i nie mamy „wstrętu do liczby mnogiej" – przez te 70 lat staraliśmy się pokazywać to, co ważne w przestrzeni kultury, ostatnio z coraz większym naciskiem na relacje do otaczającej nas rzeczywistości. To, że toruńska Wozownia przetrwała wiele kryzysowych sytuacji i jest galerią, do której twórcy chcą wracać, a odbiorcy przychodzić, zawdzięczamy pracownikom, dyrektorom – głównie Mariannie Olechnickiej i Ziemowitowi Michałowskiemu, oraz wielu artystkom, artystom, kuratorom i kuratorkom… Wszystkim – dziękuję!

Galleries of contemporary art, unlike museums, do not automatically gain a dignified air of respect and splendour as years go by. It may seem that such qualities are of little importance for a gallery, yet the seventieth anniversary of the Wozownia Art Gallery in Toruń carries a meaningful message: it demonstrates, among other things, the worth of the unfailing recognition of art as a unique and vitally significant area of human activity. This conviction, along with openness and curiosity, has allowed us to accompany artists and art critics throughout these many years that have witnessed so many changes. When Wozownia started as a Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions, art and the practice of art presentation were redolent of nineteenth-century conventions and a far cry from what we see today. This year's jubilee, in turn, is celebrated in the context of the coronavirus pandemic and amid ecological crises, at a time when overproduction in the art world is becoming problematic, a time that sees the waning of the traditional, authorial art that is being replaced by communal, committed or at least reality-oriented artistic activities. Having passed the threshold into the twenty-first century, our gallery has expanded its involvement in the real world by steadily increasing our presence on the internet. Meetings, lectures and workshops have become an important part of our programme, on a par with the exhibitions. I believe that the gallery will remain a place for presenting artworks, considering that organising exhibitions is also a form of communication, but it will also, to an ever greater extent, be a venue for debates, a space welcoming various creative activities. Just like Bauman's "truths of art", we have never taken offence at the multitude of meanings and interpretations: throughout the last seventy years, we have been focused on showing what really matters in the sphere of culture, recently with an ever greater emphasis on our relationship with the surrounding reality. The fact that Wozownia has gone unscathed through so many critical situations, and that it is a gallery which artists and visitors alike look forward to revisiting, is a credit to the dedication of the gallery's employees and directors, especially Marianna Olechnicka and Ziemowit Michałowski, and to the multitude of artists and curators.
