Wedding budgets are a popular topic. There’s advice everywhere on how to save money and cut corners. But be careful. One thing to not cut corners on is hiring professional vendors. While friends and family may have all the best intentions with offering services for your day, if they are not actually licensed, insured, and experienced, you will potentially be in for a heap of trouble and may be held financially responsible for mishaps.

Any professional business will show necessary documents including licenses and insurance certificates, and some planners and venues REQUIRE vendors to be insured. Their policies protect you from damage caused by their services. While probably super unlikely, if a guest gets hurt or there is damage done to your venue, insurance can save you (the client) from liability.

Factors such as food safety are a huge concern if you decide to hire someone who isn’t a pro for your wedding. Keeping food at a safe temperature and ensuring it is warm for service is an art and skill and requires adequate equipment. Not having a professional vendor can result in less than appetizing cuisine and food borne illness. That would not be a good way to begin married bliss!

For people such as coordinators and DJs, they are the glue that bind the day together. Hiring friends or family for these roles can result in a lack of care and at worst, a no show all together. The wedding industry runs on word of mouth and reviews and stories spread on social media. A professional business with a reputation to uphold and a contract to fulfill will not be a no show for your wedding without a backup plan in place, likely outlined in your contract.

Here’s a fun list of budget friendly favor ideas as a starting point: • Succulent plants are all the rage right now • Customized candles • Customized coffee • Koozies with the Bride & Groom’s names and wedding date • Chocolate chip cookies in a cute tin with a darling label • A jar of your favorite hot sauce with a pretty tag tied on the side • A custom shot or wine glass • A mini bag of popcorn • A jar of honey • A small bottle of wine from a local winery Check with a florist for a small plant as a favor. Perhaps a local coffee shop may be able to do a special blend for you in a custom bag with your names and date. A bakery can put together cookies in similar packaging. Pick up a case of hot sauce and create a cute tag to tie onto the bottle with a piece of twine. A local popcorn shop could make a custom label based on your wedding theme and colors and create a custom favor with the flavor of your choice.

The harmonization of new and old, perfectly coming together into a venue unlike any other.

By Marissa McCormick Jordan When an engaged couple tours Main Street Station, it’s usually the same process. They come in curious to see the venue, then once they see the gorgeous bare bones and unique city feel, their jaws drop and they can picture their wedding vision immediately.

It’s the middle of wedding season and the Richmond Weddings™ Team is sitting with Crystal Lowery, Events Manager at Main Street Station, the woman responsible for helping make city nuptial dreams come true.

If you haven’t seen the shed of Main Street Station before, prepare to be wowed. Trains silently breeze by the glass box and are the perfect complement to the unique industrial feel. The concrete floors reflect the recessed lights above and give a dull reflection of the absolutely breathtaking ceiling. Exposed metal beams, the only thing left from the original building, harmonize with new wooden ones, creating that perfect balance of new and old.

Alluding to the jaw drops of touring couples, Crystal explains, “The space really has that effect!” Bring in an experienced wedding planner, and it will transform into whatever vision you’d like.

The train shed, roughly the length of two football fields can turn your wedding into a set of experiences. Break up the length by drapes, opening a section for each part of your celebration. Start with your ceremony at the front, then open a pair of drapes to high tops and a bar for your cocktail hour.

Continue to your reception, eventually ending at the back of the shed with your band and dance floor. Dance the night away with your closest family and friends with the Richmond city lights as your backdrop.

While the shed of Main Street Station is obviously impressive, it’s the Head House, an event space at the front of the building that hosts most of their weddings.

team knew the lucky couple had to come to the Station. The couple had their date in the empty train shed and then sealed the deal with a kiss on the top of the clock tower.

The Head House, which can accommodate up to 200 guests, is where you feel Main Street Station’s history. The Renaissance architecture from 1901 transports you to an older time in Richmond’s history. With two side rooms with exquisite details, one gets that old city feel when climbing the stairs to the event space. Encased on the outside with brick, the Head House is superbly intimate, and just like the expansive train shed, can be transformed into anything you’d like.

Crystal explains, “We had one wedding have their ceremony in the Head House, and then everyone came down to the lower level for the cocktail hour as the catering company switched the room over into a beautiful reception.” A quaint and almost secretive balcony sits adjacent to the room, the perfect escape for you and your guests to get that breath of fresh air while looking over Main Street.

Large floor to ceiling windows let in loads of light, giving you the feeling of being outside, without having to worry about the weather.

Since the entire train station is climate controlled, it doesn’t matter if you’re getting married on a snowy February Saturday or the hottest day in August, your experience inside of Main Street Station will be just as spectacular.

When getting married at Main Street Station, there’s the sense of being part of an integral part of Richmond. Known as “The Welcome Mat of Richmond,” Main Street Station is bringing an exquisite air to the River City.

When he was driving past a beautiful farm property every day on his way to work as a police officer, Chris Stem never imagined that he would someday get to turn that property into a wedding venue.

“I kept telling my wife that I couldn’t let it turn into a housing development,” Chris says. “I think she thought I was a little crazy, but here we are!” After surviving 2020 after just opening in 2019, Oakdale is now fully immersed in the wedding boom and booking well into 2023.

When they chose to create the wedding space, one thing was completely clear to Chris and his partners, Jeff Sears and Eric Pair: they had to maintain the integrity of the land and its rich history. The first step?

Choosing a name with plenty of personal meaning.

The name Oakdale comes from Jeff Sears’ nearby family farm that has been passed down from generation to generation since 1902. Today, Oakdale still maintains its agricultural roots. It is the home of 75 head of cattle, pigs, sheep, and a booming hay operation. It is also Chris’s home and of course, a stunning wedding and event venue.

Oakdale is the perfect combination of convenience and seclusion. The 100 acre property is perfectly quiet and idyllic, yet it sits just 10 minutes from Short Pump and Downtown Ashland. Options for rehearsal dinner spots and guest accommodations are plentiful! Plus, for your out-of-town guests, Oakdale is a quick 35 minute drive from the Richmond Airport.

“It looks like a barn, but inside, it’s a blank slate,” Chris says. “Our couples can create a space that feels really elegant, or they can make it feel simple and cozy. It’s all over the map. We’ve seen everything from rustic themes to an opulent indoor garden theme. It’s a great space to create whatever dream you have for your big day.”

The fully climate-controlled barn overlooks a glittering pond and open hayfield where couples can choose from multiple picturesque outdoor locations for their ceremony. Your cocktail hour can take place inside or you can use the two outdoor patios complete with a fire pit and outdoor bar for those pre-dinner drinks.

With 4,000 square feet of indoor event space, Oakdale can host weddings up to 200 guests. You can choose to have your ceremony outside or inside, whichever you (or the weather!) prefer. There’s also an option to host a fully outdoor wedding under a tent or in the open air so you can enjoy a night under the stars. The venue is fully handicap accessible and of course, includes plenty of parking for guest vehicles

as well as limos and buses.

We offer so much, so our clients are comfortable because we take so much off of their plates.”

“When it comes to hosting a wedding here, all you have to do is bring in catering,” says venue manager Mary Jane Spagnolo. And it’s true!

All you have to do is find your caterer, photographer, and florist, and Oakdale’s incredible staff will handle the rest.

COVID WORLD

As the wedding and event industry takes a collective sigh of relief since pandemic restrictions lifted, we must reflect on what we learned and what may still affect you. Chances are you were either in a wedding, or a guest of wedding during the pandemic. It’s safe to say there were thousands of couples in the same boat. Across the country there were unprecedented amounts of postponements, cancellations, and elopements.

With all of that being said, WE ARE BACK!! And wedding vendors are more excited than ever to get back to doing what they love — making sure your day is as amazing as can be. Here are 5 things to consider when starting (or continuing) to plan the big day!

1. SCALED DOWN GUEST LISTS!

Are you thinking about inviting fewer people? You are not alone. Couples were faced with more than a few hard decisions over the last year, especially if planning during the time where large scale events were basically not happening at all, anywhere. States had decreased headcount possibilities to 100, or 30% of the capacity, or even just 10 guests depending on the time of year. One positive way to look at this is the money you can save by having fewer guests. This is true not only for the venue but for the caterer, favors, number of hotel rooms, invitations, postage, and so much more. While it’s true that money can add up quickly when planning a wedding, it can work in the opposite direction just as easily!

2. WE ARE ALL MORE AWARE OF EACH OTHER! Shaking hands is still a little risky to some. We have all been made aware of just how easy it is for germs to travel. If social distancing has taught us anything, it’s to be more aware of you, the person next to you, and the person they just talked to. Six degrees of coronavirus is a real thing. You really should get used to some form of social distancing at least for the foreseeable future. But if there is anything that we have proved time and time again, it’s that your day need not suffer at all due to social distancing.

Fewer folks may be at your table, and that table may be a little further away from the one next to it, but we have not been able to discern a notable formula in any of that against the fun factor. So, go and have fun and just be aware. The fun is still there, DO NOT be afraid to have it!

3. WEEKDAY WEDDINGS! We know you would never have considered this pre-pandemic. But when faced with two years of couples looking at a finite number of weekends, there may not be a choice. Wedding industry professionals have truly stepped up to

the plate to work with couples to make sure that a Tuesday wedding can be just as much fun as a Saturday wedding.

Some hard truths though; guests will more than likely have to work the next day if the wedding is on a Monday or Thursday. Pick a friendly time that will work for guests that allow them to complete their workday and get home early enough to get to work the next day. Four hours is ample time to have a super fun reception. It’s probably a good chance that the guest list will be a bit smaller, but you can save some money. (see #1 above) Also, use this opportunity to offer a different bar plan and take advantage of more savings. A full open bar may not be the best choice. Ask the

venue or caterer for other options like beer and wine or a prepaid consumption bar. Make the weekday work for you and save some more dough.

4. LIVE STREAMING! Make the current culture of video meetings and social media interactions work for you. If it must be a smaller wedding for whatever reason, work with the venue, hire a vendor who specializes in this type of thing to offer Facetime or live streaming. If you take the cost of the services and directly compare the amount of money to invite 50-100 more guests, you can easily come to terms with the price tag.

5. NORMALCY IS DECADENT!

Just the thought of being able to shop without a mask (for those that are vaccinated), go to that favorite bar or restaurant, or to start traveling again is something that is AMAZINGLY UPLIFTING. Wedding guests across the country are seeing fewer and fewer restrictions that are allowing couples to really get back to a sense of normalcy. What we didn’t expect was how good of a feeling and how freeing this decrease in restrictions was going to be.

It truly goes without saying that your guests will be more than ready to party with you.

Don’t look at any of the things that still may hang around for a while longer (social distancing, masks in certain circumstances, heightened sanitizing procedures, etc.) affect your good time. Let’s all get back to planning the biggest day of your life. Just know that we all have so much more to celebrate now, and that is a good thing!

Given that the average cost of weddings nationally is $35,000, it behooves you to spend wisely with a well-defined budget.

Having a sit-down, heart to heart, open and honest conversation with contributors about finances. as well as to set expectations, is key. Before spending $1, you will need to choose the venue. This is the one budget line item which will have a ripple effect on all the others.

A few tips on venues:

· Venues that specialize in weddings will have more offerings, requiring less vendors.

This can equate to saving time and money vs. choosing a raw space like a backyard where everything will need to be brought in, down to the restrooms, flooring, lighting, heat, air conditioning and even the upgraded power to support such an event. · All locations are not created equal and each offer different services, which when chosen thoughtfully, will help the budget and time spent on planning. Choosing a lovely space which includes a planner, DJ, set up/tear down, décor, tables, chairs, tent, lighting, etc. may be a better option. A special few may even offer transportation in a Bentley or a Range Rover for a dramatic entrance to the ceremony or the grandest of exits. · Choosing a lush venue with natural beauty will save tons on added décor and flowers.

Additionally, it could be better for your budget to select one that allows you to choose from a variety of caterers and price points vs. those that require in house catering. Also, consider booking a place where you are allowed to provide the alcohol with a one-day license, lowering costs, and taking all the leftovers home! · After touring a minimum of three places and reserving the venue, create your top three priorities that are non-negotiables. Those features should be secured next.

A few tips on making every dollar count: · Be sure to read the fine print in contracts and ask the right questions… is the gratuity included or optional, are there additional expenses like cake cutting, corking fees, set up/tear down, parking, valet, local taxes, etc.? · Choose to have the wedding and reception at the same place, it can save $3-4K. · Forego liquor and instead serve a variety of beer & wine, this can save $3-5K based on your crowd. · Opt for a Friday, Sunday, brunch, or winter wedding, again saving oodles of cash with nearly all vendors. · To save money on flowers, offer to supply the florist with a variety of personal vases from home. · When making hotel room blocks, choose one with no attrition fee (these can be as high as 75% of the entire block of rooms) and utilize a AAA discount or veteran status (if applicable) to save even more. · Remember, guest count matters-when considering food, rentals, favors and alcohol. Each guest will add $100+ to the bottom line.

· Tipping for most vendors is never expected, but when you are more than thrilled with their services, you may want to express that with an added gratuity. · Wedding insurance is highly recommended to cover deposits lost should you need to postpone or cancel due to severe weather hindering the event and to protect you from unexpected liability.

Markel has the lowest premiums and best overall coverage against both liability and cancellation. Travelers, Wedsure and WedSafe are others to consider.

It is important to remember that a wedding is most likely the largest and most expensive party you will ever throw. Starting with a well-planned budget, and honoring it as much as possible, will not only make for a joyfully successful event, but will also set the standards for your financial partnership and expectations for the future.

Choosing a caterer can be a lot of fun, but there are some tough decisions you might encounter when deciding which company to select. Here are some helpful tips when comparing caterers to help you make the right choice and to find the best fit for you and your partner.

Be thorough in your wants, desires, and preferences. The more information you can provide your caterer in the beginning, the better equipped they will be to offer the most all-inclusive quote. Are there favorite foods you want or is there a special concept you’d like to see? Don’t worry if you have never planned an event before or don’t know what information to ask. Caterers are there to guide you through the process and put all the pieces together for a seamless event.

Pay attention to the customer service. When you call or email to get a quote, the response should be helpful, detailed, and make you feel at ease. You should also be given a timeframe to receive a proposal. During busy months, many catering coordinators have limited time at a desk to correspond with clients. Be prepared that it may be a couple of weeks before you get a proposal during these times and set your expectations, so you are not chomping at the bit the next

day when you haven’t received a response.

While it is difficult to be patient and wait for that proposal, it shouldn’t be viewed as a negative. It means this particular catering company is diligently taking care of their current clients and ensuring their events are a success, which is ultimately what you want them to do for you!

After you get the proposals…Every caterer puts together proposals a little differently, which can make it challenging to compare them directly. The important key items to look for are the following:

· Is the menu meeting your needs? · Does it reflect the foods you want to see? · Where is the food being prepared? · Are the details accurate? Are the start and end times for the ceremony and reception listed correctly? · Does it tell you who is providing what?

Are you responsible for rental items? If so, which ones? · Have beverages been listed clearly? Do you need an ABC license with this venue? · Is there enough on-site staff to make your event a success? How many bartenders?

How many servers and chefs?

If your initial proposal doesn’t spell it out, always ask your catering contact to make sure your expectations are met in every way and all the details are covered.

Now onto the tasting… It’s time to move to the exciting part…tasting the food! Most caterers offer tastings for couples, but each one does it a little differently. Some may provide an assortment of items to showcase their style, presentation, or flavor, and some will provide the specific items that you are choosing for your event. When deciding on items to taste, pick dishes that you are trying to compare or that are not as obvious in the presentation. Don’t be surprised when you are charged for this opportunity,

Caterers have seen it all and will guide and assist you in creating the best day ever! Their advice comes from years of experience, so trust them.

Share with them as much information as you have: other vendors involved, plans for the wedding party before and after, favors, etc. They will have the largest staff on-site

for the duration of the event and the more knowledge they have of the big picture, the better they can anticipate the next step and be an integral part of pulling it all together.

Additional COVID-19 wedding catering tips on serving food with safety precautions We asked Kristen with A Sharper Palate Catering & Events to give us tips on how to navigate food service during the pandemic. Here is some valuable information to help keep you, your guests, and all staff as safe as possible. Having to change the format or style of your wedding can be overwhelming to start, but there are lots of creative ways to achieve the food you are envisioning and still have fun with it! · Seat your guests with their families or travel buddies (aka pods), this takes a little work on the front side with table sizes and seating charts, but overall, it makes everyone feel safe and comfortable. · Staff are now serving buffets and not having guests touch or handle the utensils until the end of the food table when their plate is handed to them. Since this takes a little longer it is recommended to call tables to the buffet (your DJ or MC can handle this and get creative with it), so that no one is waiting in line and there are only small groups at the food table vs large groups congregating. This is also fun for the staff, it allows them to interact more with the guests when normally they would not be able to do so. · Offer a couple of different areas to get beverages or drinks instead of all in one location. This does require more space but helps with social distancing and spreading people out.

It is recommended to use disposables for service. If you have your heart set on glassware, just have more so that it is only a one time use glass. Also, consider renting high top bars versus a flat table to create a more visual barrier for the beverage service. · For heavy hors d’oeuvres receptions, your caterer can prepare food in individual containers or plates, so guests can just grab and go! · Place hand sanitizer around at seating tables, bars, food tables to encourage use and masks at doorways or entries to buildings to promote wearing them specifically in inside areas.

Although you’ve seen all the different types of tents available on Pinterest, it can still be hard to tell which one is best for you. Don’t fret; the experts are here to help!

POLE TENTS PROS:

CONS:

There’s no doubt you’ve seen these beauties before. Pole tents have the grand sloping peaks that one imagines when dreaming of a scenic wedding on the water. These tents have a traditional appeal that won’t go out of style. The center poles can assist in creating a stunningly draped lighting display, with the warm glow of your bistro lights making the large space feel quaint and cozy. Best of all, pole tents are the most cost-effective option, so you can apply those savings towards some show-stopping linens or the gold flatware you wanted to splurge on!

The downside to those beautiful tall peaks? The poles that hold those peaks up. The center poles in the middle of the tent will vary in quantity depending on your tent size, but no matter how many, they will be one thing you’ll need to work around. The poles can affect how large your dance floor can be and might affect the line of sight, so keep this in mind when you’re planning your layout. Another consideration with pole tents is that they need to be staked into the ground. If you don’t have a grassy surface to work with, you’ll want to look into a frame tent instead.

PROS: Simple, elegant, sophisticated, and practical frame tents have it all. Not only are you getting the look and feel of an indoor venue with an A-Line ceiling, but you’re also going to see the benefit of an entirely open floor plan. Without poles in the middle of it, your dance floor and seating options are limitless. Most frame tents are available in a gable end style, which makes it so you can push it right up to an existing structure like a house or barn for a seamless entryway.

It’s also possible to connect several to create a modular space – i.e. a bar tent, buffet tent, and main reception tent.

Modulars also allow for a walkway tent to get you from one part of your event to the other without needing to worry about the drizzle. Last but not least is its ability to go on almost any surface. Your tenting vendor can use concrete weights, water barrels or stakes to secure these anywhere your heart desires (and let’s be honest, sometimes your heart desires a rooftop!)

CONS: Frame tents may sound like a dream, but there are some things to know before you lock one down. The interior does tend to feel a little more industrial than a pole tent. You can usually see some metal framework overhead, which doesn’t always go with the desired aesthetic.

This can be negated with a liner made out of gathered fabric, but these tend to come close to doubling your tent cost and have an extremely formal ballroom feel. On top of potentially needing a liner, it is a bit more labor-intensive than a pole tent and will cost more than its counterpart of the same size. If you’re not looking to devote quite so much of your wedding budget towards tenting, you may want to go for the classically beautiful pole tent.

CLEAR TENTS PROS:

CONS:

Clear tents are exactly like frame tents, except the solid white vinyl tops are replaced with a gorgeous clear vinyl, allowing you to fully absorb the beauty of your venue. This is ideal for any couple who picked their outdoor space for its picturesque qualities or striking views. Clear tents are the perfect addition to a party that is carefully nestled into the mountainside, deep within your favorite city where you just can’t miss the sunset behind the skyline or on your family farm near the willow tree your great-great-grandpa planted so many years ago. You chose your venue for a reason—don’t let that reason go unnoticed!

As with everything beautiful in life, clear tents do have their ugly sides.

The biggest concern with these is weather conditions. In the heart of summer, when the sun is immediately overhead and there isn’t a cloud in the sky, the clear vinyl can create a greenhouse effect that isn’t the most comfortable for your guests. The addition of fans will help circulate the air, but dead-of-summer clear tents should still be used mainly after sundown whenever possible. While the thought of a snow-covered clear tent sounds lovely, you are entirely unable to utilize them in freezing temperatures as the tops get brittle and cannot be installed without cracking. Another issue is cost. You can expect a 30% - 50% price bump from the standard frame tents.

Imagine a bridal boutique…clouds of garments in shades of white stretch endlessly before you. A consultant asks if you have anything in mind, and suddenly you go blank. Countless hours poring over bridal magazines seem to have gone to waste. Suddenly, you don’t really know what you want or how to describe it. Before this happens to you in reality, review this vocabulary lesson.

Silhouette Savvy

The basic shape of a dress, or how a gown is cut, determines how it fits.

Consider this first when choosing a gown. There are four basic silhouettes: A-LINE (PRINCESS): Think of the shape of an “A” – narrow at the top and gradually flares out from the natural waist. This is the most universally flattering silhouette, mostly because it gives a sense of perfect proportions. When the bodice (top of the gown) features ruching (angled folds of fabric in all the right places) there’s an added slimming factor.

BALL GOWN: A fitted bodice with a full skirt that starts at the waist. The fullness of the skirt can vary, but it is your basic fairytale, regal look. It may even have a Basque waist, a point just below the navel (think Queen Elizabeth I) that emphasizes a small waist. Great for those who are smaller on top and at the waist because it conceals fuller hips and thighs.

EMPIRE: The waistline is elevated to just below the bust with a skirt that floats away from the waist in a shape similar to an A-line, but slimmer. This shape enhances a smaller bust, makes the petite look taller, and tucks away a tummy.

SHEATH: Traditionally a tough silhouette to wear, this straight, close-fitting shape is best for petite figures. The mermaid (or trumpet) variation creates the illusion of curves and features a wider skirt that starts at or below the knee.

The fit-and-flare gown is a more forgiving version. Fitted only to the mid-thigh, the skirt flares out higher to provide more freedom of movement at the knees and a little more balance for voluptuous figures (but bear in mind it still accentuates every curve).

Fabric Framework

The fabric plays a huge role in setting the tone of the gown (and therefore the event), so it is best to choose a fabric compatible with the formality and location of the wedding. Here are the basics: LACE: There’s a wide variety of this ornate, patterned material, but it is usually delicate threads woven into flowers or other fanciful shapes and often encrusted with beads, pearls, or crystals. Lace can add an air of tradition to a gown, but it is lightweight and versatile, both garden-ready and cathedral-worthy.

ORGANZA: Soft and sheer, this lightweight material flows effortlessly to give a gown an ethereal look. Usually, it has a touch of silk for sheen. A simple organza gown can catch the breeze on a beach, or a designer can encrust it with crystals for a more formal affair.

SATIN: Soft, smooth fabric that feels very rich and indulgent. Perfect for a black-tie occasion, but it can be heavy and retain heat.

SILK: Gorgeous natural fiber that has a lovely sheen to it. It breathes a little better than satin, but it’s not for the fussy bride as it wrinkles easily.

TAFFETA: Lightweight material with a stiff texture that works great for more architectural designs (3-D accents, perfectly placed folds, etc.).

It can get a bit noisy when it moves.

TULLE: Light, frothy, and sheer, this very tight netting is most often used in multiple layers or as a layer over other materials. It adds softness or a princess poof, depending on the amount.

Back Basics

All eyes will inevitably be on the back of the gown at some point, so it is important to consider the features of a gown from that angle as well.

The bodice may have a corset back. Or covered buttons might conceal a zipper. An open back adds drama. A keyhole back is an open back with a closure at the neck so the fabric frames the back. If you have a train, then you’ll need a bustle. There are two basic types: FRENCH: The fabric is tucked underneath the back of the dress using 8 to 10 hooks, and, depending on the length of the train, it may be tucked under more than one time, creating a tiered, poufy effect. This works well on gowns with pickups (extra material on a skirt that is pushed up and tacked).

TRADITIONAL: It looks like a triangle of fabric on the back of the gown because the fabric is lifted to the bottom of the zipper or bodice and secured with a loop and button. This style shows off beaded trains nicely and gives a very clean look for a sleek design.

Neckline Nuances

The shape of the neckline frames your face for many a photo, so it is also an important feature.

STRAPLESS: Gowns with no sleeves or straps are held up by boning and a concealed waistband. They can come straight across the bust line, curve like the top half of a valentine heart over the bust with a deep V at the cleavage (sweetheart), or gently dip in a cross between the two (semi-sweetheart). Sweetheart necklines accentuate the bust and can make a small top seem larger. The straighter the neckline, the more it minimizes the bust.

STRAPS: If strapless is not for you, have a good seamstress add thin spaghetti straps or wide straps over both shoulders or just one.

Halters originate from the bust line and connect at the back of the neck, and they emphasize the shoulders and back.

SLEEVES: Short cap sleeves cover just the shoulders and go hand in hand with a portrait neckline, flattering for a delicate neck and shoulders. Three-quarter length sleeves, which end just below the elbow, or full sleeves (à la Kate Middleton) may hide arm flaws but remember that they also add bulk to the upper body. V-neck gowns elongate the torso and show off the neck and décolletage.

A Final Word

Think of this as just a primer and your consultant will be your teacher when you’re in the boutique.

It helps to bring the salon photos and ideas, but allow them to make suggestions. Brides who do so often end up thanking the consultant for helping them find the dress of their dreams. The gown you’ve ripped from countless magazines look great on the model but may end up doing you a disservice. Ask your bridal consultant to give you a variety of silhouettes to try. Once you’ve found the right silhouette, try different versions to find one that fits the occasion, your style and, of course, your budget.

As far as clothing, there’s only one essential: a basic strapless bra that will support you but won’t get in the way of seeing each gown at it’s best, no matter the shape or neckline.

PRO TIP: If you have the shoes you want to wear, it’s possible to get a special measurement taken for the hem, saving money in alterations later. However, shoes aren’t essential, and not all gowns can be measured this way, so don’t stress if choosing footwear is still on the list.

Mentally, you can pack light by keeping an open mind. Of course, you’ll want to come in with photos and ideas, and these are very helpful to the stylist when it comes to pinpointing your style. But don’t overdo it or get stuck on a particular type of gown.

Give the stylist an opportunity to work some magic and recommend gowns based on background knowledge and the information you’ve provided. Two big things to keep in mind are budget and timeline, so “unpack” that information from the start so your stylist can be sure to find a gown that won’t break the bank and will arrive on time.

Finally, show restraint when it comes to the number of people on this trip. Minimalists rejoice: less is definitely more when it comes to the size of the viewing party.

Remember, everyone you bring to the appointment has baggage of their own, and it can greatly encumber the decision-making process. You love a gown that Aunt Hilda deemed hideous when you exited the dressing room, and suddenly the bloom has fallen off the rose. Now what? Ideally, bring one or two of your most trusted family or friends; three at the most. This avoids too many opinions or rowdy groups that take attention from the task at hand.

Keeping it minimal will help you go into the bridal appointment with less stress and more room for a great experience. Pack light for a fun, low-pressure journey to the gown of your dreams – perhaps a look you never actually dreamed of until opening your mind and putting down the heavy load of expectations. When taking a step back and looking at the wedding day, it can feel a little overwhelming. You’ll want photos from the start of your day with friends getting ready and all the way to the end with those fun sparklers after the reception. So, you may wonder, how many hours are actually needed?

There are a few ways to decide how many hours are necessary for photography coverage. Since every wedding is unique and not every situation is the same, options may vary and will depend on several factors. This includes the length of the ceremony, the time the reception ends, and how many locations there will be. If there is a different place for getting ready, the ceremony, and the reception, you will need to account for travel time to each.

If you desire those gorgeous, styled photos of the bridal details and the fun getting ready images with your wedding party (popping champagne in matching pj sets or robes!) but don’t care as much for photos like dancing and the exit, then we don’t have to worry about covering the whole reception. Capturing major events like the special dances, toasts, and cake cutting, with 30-60 minutes of dancing (and that is plenty of time to get a lot of photos if you have guests who are ready to party!) will save on time that the photographer needs to be there.

The date is quickly approaching and every detail is meticulously planned to a T. Your dream wedding is coming to life, and you and your partner are buzzing with excitement. You have rehearsed the First Dance enough to offer anyone the performance of a lifetime. How about bringing everything to the next level by dancing your routine to live music?

You are about to tell the world about your love story; it deserves some pizzazz!

Whether that dream accompaniment is a serenade in the moonlight, a step back in time with an orchestra, or a pop concert at your wedding, live music will undoubtedly add that extra magical touch to an already special moment.

When hiring a band, here are 7 things to think about:

1.

Be clear about the style(s) of music the band will play.

music perfectly, the price tag soon reveals itself as being not so extravagant. Remember: these are professionals and having high level entertainment will require a certain budget.

Although many bands do, not every band plays a variety of different musical styles. A Jazz band might not be the best fit to perform Top 40 songs, and a Pop band might not be the best choice for a cocktail hour. If you have a musical vision, it’s important to share it with the band leader/ agent and ask if it is part of their repertoire.

Plan an appropriate budget for a live band.

Often, people don’t realize the details involved with hiring live musicians for an event, such as the hours of travel or the number of musicians. Ask the band if they can play multiple segments of your wedding.

This would be particularly advantageous if you’re on a budget and would still enjoy having live music at your wedding. Many ensembles are often skilled in several musical styles and could potentially accommodate your ceremony as a duo, the cocktail hour as a trio, and the dinner portion of your reception as a quintet for example. This option would not only allow for more variety on your end, but by hiring the musicians in “bulk”, you may benefit from a substantial savings. Again, be sure to be extra clear when communicating the musical styles you wish to hear during the relative timeline; e.g. classical repertoire for the ceremony, gypsy Jazz for the cocktail hour, and Swing dancing for the reception.

Use song requests sparingly.

Each couple has their song or a memory that’s attached to a soundtrack: it’s only human nature! Whereas it’s expected to accommodate for First Dances, Processionals and other songs that are uniquely tailored to your wedding, it’s important to keep in mind that you’re hiring a professional and well-rehearsed band with an established repertoire, not a jukebox.

Feed the performers and plan for breaks accordingly.

Breaks are necessary for musicians to avoid hand and lip injuries as well as strained vocal cords. To ensure smooth transitions, break timelines and length can and should be discussed in advance.

Additionally, if musicians spend over 3 hours at your event including travel and set-up, a meal of some sort is greatly appreciated.

6.

Don’t just grab any microphone for speeches.

Especially in times of Covid, it is important to follow appropriate guidelines when asking the band to provide microphones. Discuss alternate microphone allowances prior to the event to avoid bad surprises.

7.

Tip the band.

If you enjoy the music during your wedding or had a nice rapport with the band leader, the best way to show your appreciation is by tipping the band directly! Whereas it is not required, gratuity is highly cherished among the band members when delivering a satisfactory performance.

As a good rule of thumb, musicians will reciprocate the energy they receive from you. They are entertainers at heart, and they’re passionate about what they do. Music is so connected to emotions: a skilled musician is in tune with this concept and can transmit it to their audience.

There was a time when live music was a daily part of everyone’s lives, long before the stereo. In each home was a piano and, in each restaurant, would be live musicians. People would congregate around the piano and sing or play together in their living room. Music was not just a vocation or a

pastime but a common thread of communication.

Hiring a band for a memorable occasion is ALWAYS a good idea. No matter what style of music, the band will bring either a heightened sense of sophistication or will make you feel like dancing with that certain joy that only live entertainment can bring. After all, isn’t that what your special day is about?

ebecca and Chase met on a date set up by mutual friends for her Sigma Kappa fall party at West Virginia University. After dating for a few years Chase popped the question. Rebecca recalls, “Chase purchased a nice pair of cowboy boots and I jokingly said he wasn’t allowed to wear them until he proposed. Weeks went by as they sat in the closet. On February 29, 2020, he begged me to let him wear them to dinner. I reluctantly agreed and went to go grab them. He took the boot and turned it upside down and out tipped the ring box.”

The couple planned their wedding in just a few short months. The ceremony was held in a quaint church. However, with its capacity and social distancing rules, it allowed only for immediate family to attend. They were able to livestream for loved ones from afar to share in their special day. Traditional Christian vows were exchanged, and they lit the same unity candle Rebecca’s parents used at their wedding. The reception was held at the home of Rebecca’s aunt and uncle. Rebecca states, “We chose this for the beautiful, inviting, and charming outdoor setting. We really wanted to escalate the backyard. We went all out with bistro lights, lanterns, tent, and stations of personalized items to transform the venue into a magical event.”

When asked about their biggest challenge, they admit that planning during a pandemic with most of Chase’s family up north created some roadblocks. Not knowing who could attend and if they could even come was stressful for all. The couple offers, “Enjoy the process leading up to the big day. Do more than one cake tasting. Stay up late handwriting invitations. Let your mom invite family you’ve never met. So many people get excited to celebrate your love. And just know, at the end of the day, it truly is just a day. Do what you want to do, but let some things go. Don’t stress the small things. You won’t remember them anyway.”

A

ngel and Zach first met in 2015 at Cosby High School. Both were in the marching band; Zach played clarinet and Angel was in color guard. As mutual Star Wars fans, their first date was at the movies to see The Force Awakens.

Several years later, Zach proposed to Angel in front of the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk right before the Navy ball. A photographer was there taking photos of the moment and Angel’s mom and grandfather even captured the whole thing on video!

The pandemic began during their planning process so original plans of a large wedding had to be pushed aside. When searching for a ceremony venue, Angel found The Estate at River Run and immediately sent it to Zach, who was deployed at the time. They agreed it was perfect and exactly what they were looking for.

The newlyweds danced out of the ceremony to “Now That We Found Love” by Heavy D, then moved to The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing for the reception. Of course, they worked Star Wars into their wedding with embellishments on the cake, themed music, and lightsabers from home.

Like many others, both stated that planning during a pandemic was challenging. On top of that, Angel was finishing her last semester in college and Zach was deployed.

Angel says, “I had a lot on my plate, but I made it work and it was beautiful! No matter how hard you try and how much you plan, not everything will go as planned and that’s okay.”

“The main objective we had for our reception was to make it a party!” says Courtney.

DJ Frank of Bunn DJ Company made that happen with high energy music and dance floor lighting. A ribbon wand exit on the way out to the trolley from Taylor’s Classic Travels capped off the perfect night.

rian and Patrick first met 7 years ago. After spending some time in a longdistance relationship, they finally met in person in Buffalo, NY and spent a weekend together in Niagara Falls. Both had the idea to propose to each other at Libby Hill Park overlooking the city. They each read five reasons they wanted to marry. “It was an odd way of doing it, but it was very us.”

The couple chose the VMFA as the wedding location. “When we first moved to Richmond, we went to the VMFA and had dinner at Muse Restaurant. We remembered looking down onto the sculpture park and commenting how great it would be to have a party on the stone terrace across the lawn. We chose to do our vows there.” Since the wedding was during a pandemic, safety was at the top of their concerns so the two opted to keep everything outdoors. The theme of the day was “simplicity”. The beautiful sculpture garden was the serene background requiring minimal décor under the tent. The short ceremony concluded with personal vows and then a traditional Syrian dance, a nod to Patrick’s family.

After cocktail hour and dinner at Brambly Park, the newlyweds hosted everyone at their home for an outdoor fire and their favorite movie, Practical Magic. “We filled the yard with comfortable chairs, pillows and blankets for everyone to cuddle up on.

It was a hit! Everyone loved it!”

Brian and Patrick admit they never wanted a huge wedding, but Covid restrictions forced them to scale down even further. “Finding the right venue for both the ceremony and dinner was challenging. Keeping everyone comfortable and safe was our main concern.”

t was summer 2016 in New York. Both transplants were a little over a year into big city living. Like most young hopefuls, they swiped right into their first date in Long Island City at Casa Enrique.

Fast forward to day 1 of 2020, and John and Sydney were the only Brooklynites who weren’t hungover. After a brief ferry ride, they wandered to The Max Family Garden, a rustic hideaway normally bustling with tourists, but the two had it all to themselves.

John paused their walk and said, “You know you’re my favorite person in the entire world, right?” And Syd (still clueless) joked, “Yes, duh John. You’re mine, too!” John leaned in for a kiss while shuffling his pocket and got down on his knee.

The two aren’t a traditional couple, so their wedding style was no exception. For the ceremony, friends Susannah and Sammy sang “This is Our Time” by WILD as Sydney walked down the aisle with mom Kathy.

Wedding inspiration came from the concrete jungle where it all began (NYC), to their houseplant collection, modern boho design style, and commitment to supporting local RVA. Two elements defined the design: the disco ball hanging from the center of the skylight for the reception. This was a must-have, especially for Sydney, who says she should have lived during the 70s. Second was the “Virginia is for Lovers” neon sign custom made by a Richmond legend in his 80s.

Sydney’s favorite part of the day? The money gun on the dance floor. She ran the idea by John and he didn’t hesitate. She ordered a gold chrome gun, took out $300 in $1 dollar bills, and enlisted her most fun friend to use it. The crowd went wild!

The couple’s advice to others? “Do it your way. Have the wedding you want to have, and you’ll be so happy you did. Taking time to support small, local businesses comes with a cost - but it’s worth it 100%.”

Your Save the Dates and Wedding Invitations are your guest’s first impression of your wedding and the primary way of informing them what they need to know for your celebration. Here are some frequently asked questions that stationers are asked when meeting with couples.

Do I have to send out a Save the Date?

No, you don’t need to send out a Save the Date. This is a fairly new practice in the wedding industry over the last decade, but with the amount of time and expense that goes into a wedding, it is a great way to let your guests know the date and information ahead of time. Save the Dates are especially helpful for destination weddings since more planning is necessary. It’s always nice to give your guests extra time to make arrangements.

What information should be included on my Save the Date?

The main points of the wedding day are what needs to be conveyed. The couple’s names and picture (optional), date, and city/ state. One of the most important pieces of information you can give your guests is your wedding website. Websites do not belong on the wedding invitation which makes the Save 132

the Date the perfect place to give them this information.

When should I send my Save the Dates and Invitations?

Save the Dates can be sent out six months to a year in advance of the wedding. If your celebration is a destination wedding or during a busy time of the year, such as during summer vacation or a holiday weekend, you may want to send them at least six to eight months ahead of time so they can plan around these dates and arrange for time off work.

For wedding invitations, we typically recommend six to eight weeks. If you did not send a Save the Date, consider sending them out around the eight-week mark. Sending them out three months or more ahead of time has become a trend, but unfortunately, it hasn’t ultimately helped with people sending back responses.

Should I order invitations online?

There are a few reputable invitation sites, but the customer service is historically lacking and you have little recourse if there is a problem, misprint, or wrong information. There is usually no proofing with online companies so you are on your

own for spelling and etiquette. Invitations are something that is best-chosen inperson by seeing and feeling the stock, the actual printing on the stock, and having a professional to help you with etiquette. There are a lot of rules of etiquette that are involved in the designing and wording of invitations that you may not be privy to. You can avoid future embarrassment and hurt feelings by going to a professional.

The assumption that online invitation sites offer cheaper pricing is debatable, as most are digitally printed and mass-produced.

Unfortunately, once you make the upgrades to the paper, envelopes, etc., the cost is very comparable to a local stationer’s pricing, sometimes more. You indeed get what you pay for, and fortunately for local stationers, a cottage industry of “fixing” online invitation mistakes has emerged but that is an added expense that you could have avoided in the beginning.

What is the cost of an invitation?

Invitation pricing is determined by different factors. The printing process plays a large part. If you are looking for letterpress or engraving, these tend to be the higher priced invitation choices. Thermography and flat or digital printing are typically less expensive

options. Paper or stock can go from luxe, thick cotton papers to more cost-effective, thinner stocks. Another factor that will affect the price is the number of pieces you need in your invitation suite. Most people require an invitation with an envelope, a response card with envelope, and some need to add a details card or reception card as well. Keep in mind that a typical greeting card is around $5.00 each. A beautiful invitation can start anywhere from $4.00 - $5.00 each and go up from there.

Should I use a website for RSVPs? Websites are a convenient way to get information to your guests, and most offer a way to RSVP to the wedding as well. When trying to decide if you will do a mail-back response or have people reply online you need to think of everyone on the guestlist.

Just because it is convenient for you and your friends to answer online does not mean your grandparents and older guests can respond this way. Some don’t feel comfortable with this method, and some may not have the equipment. In many cases, couples include a phone number for them to call as well as the web address. In other instances, couples

have printed enough of the mailed responses for those that would be more apt to answer in this manner. Either way, you want to be sure all your guests feel equally included and can easily respond to your invitation.

Where should I put our registry information?

Information about your registry should NEVER go on the invitation itself…EVER. When you invite someone to an event, especially something as special as a wedding, you are requesting their presence, NOT their presents. Including registry information can be seen as presumptuous and ill-mannered.

If you wish for your guests to have your registry information you can put it on your website, or you can add in another small card or on a details card in the invitation suite, or by word of mouth, but never on the actual invitation.

What postage costs should I factor into the cost of invitations?

Postage is often a forgotten part of the

invitation process. The number of pieces you have in your suite, as well as the type of stock they are printed on, will affect the weight of the invitation, therefore, the cost of postage. Invitations typically require more postage than the average piece of mail. We always recommend taking a fully assembled invitation to the post office and let them weigh it so you know exactly how much postage is required. Response cards require less than the invitation, but be sure to put a stamp on the response card envelopes when assembling the invitations so your guests can reply promptly. When taking your invitations to the post office we always recommend that you ask to have them hand canceled. This will decrease the amount of machinery sorting your invitations will incur, which will also minimize the chances of damage.

Once you decide on travel dates, it’s best to ensure that you’ve taken the appropriate steps to safeguard your vacation investment. Always purchase travel insurance to help protect against unforeseeable changes to plans. Keep in mind, travel insurance, like medical insurance, doesn’t cover everything. Review the policy for coverage limitations. Many credit cards offer a very low level of coverage, which isn’t adequate for international travel.

DJ VS. BAND When making this decision, know the rules of the venue and the space available. A 5-piece band is going to need more space than a DJ!

GRATUITIES For your caterer or food service, gratuity is always added into your bottom line, but you do have other wonderful vendors on the day of that you can treat. Keep this in mind when thinking about your budget. Be sure to arrange envelopes with each vendor’s name on it so your planner can easily handle it on the wedding day.

ACCOMMODATIONS Venues will often work with nearby hotels who can offer room block pricing.
