You’re Engaged! NOW WHAT?

One of the most-asked questions that wedding vendors hear from couples is, “What do I do first?” And it’s a very important one! Don’t worry. We’re here to help! Here are the top things to think about doing first:

Choose your date.

One thing you can count on is that whatever date you are thinking about…another couple is thinking about it too. Want to hear something scary? In the year 2020, across the nation, one of the most popular dates had over 10,000 couples thinking about it. Fortunately, that is not the case in any given region or area. But it’s still goes without saying that picking the date and zeroing in on a favorite is important.

Book the church and venue.

For all the couples thinking of the same date, you can be sure that they are thinking of the same venues and churches too. Choosing a date and then booking the venue and/or church will certainly check off the big to-do items on your list and can quickly reduce stress. Most will only do one event per day, so booking early will make sure you get the one you want.

Set a budget.

If you haven’t already considered what you have to spend, now is the time to do it. Bring in anyone and everyone that will help with expenses to discuss and create the budget.

Create your wedding party!

One of the most fun, but very stressful jobs on your to-do list can be deciding who will be in the wedding party. Generally, pick the names of friends and family who are closest to you and have the biggest impact on your lives.

(PRO TIP: after choosing the party, sleep on it. Once you’ve asked someone to play such a big role, you can’t take it back!)

It’s official, you’re engaged! Before jumping into the deep end of the wedding pool, be sure to take a breath and take your time getting your feet wet. Here are some helpful steps to keep from feeling overwhelmed while planning the nuptials.

· UTILIZE A DIGITAL PLATFORM. Tools for planning have come a long way! You’ll find everything in one place to track your progress, even see how best to lighten the load by delegating small tasks to trusted friends. Be sure to make it shareable without allowing for edits.

· SCHEDULE A WEEKLY DATE FOR YOU AND YOUR LOVE! It’s important to spend time together during the planning process but with the caveat that the wedding cannot be discussed during the date. This will surely help you stay romantically connected as a couple.

· COMMIT TO AN EXERCISE PLAN. The best way to relieve stress is to work it out! Whether a 30-minute walk, a barre class or spinning, this one small act done consistently will make otherwise overwhelming situations more enjoyable.

· COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS. Start your engagement on a positive note, quite literally! By each of you listing 3 things that you’re grateful for and then sharing with one another at the weekly dates, you are sure to keep things both joyful and in proper perspective.

· HIRE THE BEST. Whatever your budget, be sure to factor in a wonderful planner. Finding a wedding planning team that has your back is truly priceless. Their expertise is a gift to yourself that you will never regret!

Trendy and Inexpensive WEDDING FAVORS

Favors and custom giveaways can be the fun part of wedding planning, whether they are specialty can/bottle coolies with your initials, custom-printed mints for the dessert table or a host of other possibilities. These aren’t the handful of wedding party gifts but, instead they are the giveaway items that enhance and personalize the wedding. The challenge is trying to buy them. While known as wedding favors, in the industry they are called promotional Items, and it’s important to be aware of hidden costs, minimums, and production time considerations. Before we discuss the ordering process and pitfalls to avoid, let’s talk about some popular favors. Each of the items below run less than $2 each and, in some cases, just pennies per piece.

Popular Favors

Can/Bottle Coolies – In the last five years, this has been the number one wedding favor, and there is no close second. Fun customizations include wreath-circled initials, hashtags (#lotsofhashtags) and even images of the couples’ dogs. Normally these have a “fun” side and a “classier” side. Coolies come in normal and slim can sizes as well as stiff and collapsible designs. There are about ten color options for the coolies and almost unlimited color options for the imprints.

Chocolates – These tasty favors can be customized in a variety of forms. Foil wrappers on individual 1-oz. squares can have names, dates or any design you like. Less popular, because of cost, is an imprint molded directly into the chocolate. This can be expensive but really makes an impression. Individual chocolates are good for scattering on the dinner tables. Another option for dessert tables or the exit table is a tin or cardboard container, customized on the outside with your art, and containing 5-10 small treats.

Personalized Bags – A popular new trend is providing out-of-town guests with welcome bags at hotel check in. These may include some of the special couple’s favorite treats, locally made items, or perhaps a list of local attractions and a welcome note describing the contents’ significance to them. Bags are available in many styles, colors and sizes. Paper bags with handles, nylon string bags, and recycled cloth bags are popular, and the bag style dictates the design options (full color vs. 1-2 color, digitally printed vs. silk screened, etc.).

Stadium Cups – These popular and time-tested items are available in 12, 16, 20 and 24 oz. sizes, can be smooth or fluted, and come in a wide variety of colors. Most have one-color imprints that can be different on each side. Plastic cups are most common, but paper and clear plastic cups are also available.

Drink Stirrers – This throw-away item is a great touch to help personalize your day. There are a few varieties, but generally they are about five inches long with personalized signs on a little rectangle or heart at the top. Bartenders then put one in each drink.

Mints – Personalized mints with the couple’s names or the shared new name are a nice touch on a dessert table, the dinner tables or in the reception area. A recently popular idea is to place a basket of forgotten items in the bathrooms for guests, such as travel deodorant, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, and combs or brushes, and mints are a great addition.

Buying Wedding Favors

This is where wedding favors get tricky, so keep some things in mind:

1. Where you buy can make a huge difference in your experience. I highly recommend finding a brick-and-mortar company in your area. With an overwhelming selection of options, art guidelines, and delivery times, having a real person you can meet with and call when necessary provides comfort and accessible answers. Local trophy shops are a great choice because they carry these items and regularly handle lots of personalization.

2. Art and design can be a challenge. Unless you are a graphic designer, you will probably need assistance creating the final art. Most vendors are willing to help. All you do is decide initially what you want and then approve the final proof. There’s no need to be intimidated - the vendor is there for you.

3. Production times vary depending on what company you choose. If you buy from a local store, most of these products will be manufactured overseas, then printed in the U.S., and production time is usually 1-3 weeks. If you buy through a website, these items are often made and printed overseas and, between production and shipping, delivery can run from three weeks to never arriving. Supply chain and shipping issues are very real in this sector. This is another great reason to find a local vendor.

4. Minimum order quantities vary, but a good rule of thumb is roughly $200 for each item. So, if you are buying $1.50 can coolies, the minimum will likely be around 150. If you are buying $20 custom umbrellas, the minimum will probably be 10.

5. There will be a set-up charge, whether for silk screens or production, and it’s usually about $30$50. This charge isn’t from your vendor, but from the manufacturer they use. If you are buying online and it says “no set-up charge,” rest assured there is a set-up charge. They are just adding it to the price of each item.

6. Some vendors may charge for shipping from the factory to the local store. Sometimes the shipping cost is broken out separately and sometimes it is included in the price of the item.

This may feel like a lot, but the vendors are there to help you decide on the right product, create a great design, and get the items in time for the big day. You get to create fun personal touches for your wedding without breaking the bank.

Your Date is Not Available! Now What?

The wedding world is still reeling from the monumentally difficult task of trying to stay above water and dealing with a year (or more) of having little to no income. The one thing that has continued to be proven true is that even though Covid shut down the wedding industry, couples still wanted to get married.

This current wedding season is one of the busiest that has ever been seen. The fact that the industry has become so busy, and complicated, is due to everyone trying to reschedule, while newly engaged couples are also looking at the same open dates. This flood of interest has left many throwing their hands up in the air with frustration.

But fear not, as long as you are patient and have a little flexibility, you may be able to find the perfect date. (And maybe even save a little money in the process!)

One quick way to redirect your investigation is to consider non-peak days such as Friday or Sunday. Those may not be your first choice, but there could be more availability and possibly less expensive. With most Saturdays being booked, many vendors may offer better-than-average rates. Fridays and Sundays are a perfect way to make everyone happy.

Don’t be afraid to ask your venue what is available. If your preferred date is already booked, most wedding vendors will bend over backward to find another date if you ask!

So don’t give up. Think about Fridays and Sundays, ask vendors what they have available, consider a different month, and keep options open. You will find the right date for sure!

Next Stop Your Perfect Venue

When an engaged couple tours Main Street Station, it’s usually the same process. They come in curious to see the venue, then once they see the gorgeous bare bones and unique city feel, their jaws drop and they can picture their wedding vision immediately.

It’s the middle of wedding season and the Richmond Weddings™ Team is sitting with Crystal Lowery, Events Manager at Main Street Station, the woman responsible for helping make city nuptial dreams come true. If you haven’t seen the shed of Main Street Station before, prepare to be wowed. Trains silently breeze by the glass box and are the perfect complement to the unique industrial feel. The concrete floors reflect the recessed lights above and give a dull reflection of the absolutely breathtaking ceiling. Exposed metal beams, the only thing left from the original building, harmonize with new wooden ones, creating that perfect balance of new and old.

Alluding to the jaw drops of touring couples, Crystal explains, “The space really has that effect!” Bring in an experienced wedding planner, and it will transform into whatever vision you’d like.

The train shed, roughly the length of two football fields can turn your wedding into a set of experiences. Break up the length by drapes, opening a section for each part of your celebration. Start with your ceremony at the front, then open a pair of drapes to high tops and a bar for your cocktail hour. Continue to your reception, eventually ending at the back of the shed with your band and dance floor. Dance the night away with your closest family and friends with the Richmond city lights as your backdrop.

While the shed of Main Street Station is obviously impressive, it’s the Head House, an event space at the front of the building that hosts most of their weddings.

The Head House, which can accommodate up to 200 guests, is where you feel Main Street Station’s history. The Renaissance architecture from 1901 transports you to an older time in Richmond’s history. With two side rooms with exquisite details, one gets that old city feel when climbing the stairs to the event space. Encased on the outside with brick, the Head House is superbly intimate, and just like the expansive train shed, can be transformed into anything you’d like. Crystal explains, “We had one wedding have their ceremony in the Head House, and then everyone came down to the lower level for the cocktail hour as the catering company switched the room over into a beautiful reception.” A quaint and almost secretive balcony sits adjacent to the room, the perfect escape for you and your guests to get that breath of fresh air while looking over Main Street.

Main Street Station, in all its parts, is beautiful on its own. You don’t really need too much decor, the space speaks for itself. Completely unique and unlike any other spot on the East Coast, you can create your wedding vision. From the highway, your guests will be impressed. The glass shed and original clock tower standing tall against the backdrop of Shockoe Bottom.

The clock tower was the palate for the entire building and made an appearance on national television in 2018. When Richmond was named one of the cities in season 14 of ABC’s The Bachelorette, the Main Street Station

team knew the lucky couple had to come to the Station. The couple had their date in the empty train shed and then sealed the deal with a kiss on the top of the clock tower.

Large floor to ceiling windows let in loads of light, giving you the feeling of being outside, without having to worry about the weather. Since the entire train station is climate controlled, it doesn’t matter if you’re getting married on a snowy February Saturday or the hottest day in August, your experience inside of Main Street Station will be just as spectacular.

You’re engaged! As you start checking things off your list, don’t forget to prepare for the part after the wedding day called marriage…

Why are healthy marriages so important?

The community is stronger when couples are fulfilled in their relationship, and children (when and if they enter the picture) are more likely to do well in school and life. Everyone hopes for happy, lifelong relationships and research shows that most people, regardless of background or economic status, eventually want to be married! In fact, around 40% of couples get engaged between Christmas and Valentine’s Day then immediately start focusing on their BIG day! Excitement takes over and the couple is off and running in a race that seems to go faster and faster until their wedding day arrives. Therefore, all new couples should pause, take note and prepare for their marriage together, not just the wedding day. Here are a few things to remember as you get ready for “I do”:

Get Pre-marital Coaching

Did you know that couples who simply take an online assessment are more likely to show relationship satisfaction through their own discussions. Those who take it one step further and meet with a facilitator or coach decrease the likelihood of divorce by 30%. Your premarital coaching program should be fun and exciting while getting you to talk as a couple about important topics. So, as the big day approaches, be sure to take the time to make plans for your future.

Build in Fun & Grow your Friendship

Couples that play together, stay together. As you are preparing for the wedding, make it exciting for both of you through the entire process. Obviously, you want that day to be fun, just remember that it is only one day. You need to be playful and proactive when it comes to keeping the friendship alive for many years to come.

Make it Last a Lifetime

How do you prep a meal? What steps do you take before a trip? Where are you going to live after the wedding day? In other words, you make plans for everything else in life, you should do the same for the marriage. If planning a wedding takes a lot, think about how much planning the rest of your lives together will take. Discuss and set long-term goals together as a couple. Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years? When will you have children? When do you want to retire? Real life happens and you need to be able to talk about everything, be willing to share thoughts/ feelings, and lean on each other when things change. You’re on the same team and the motto is now ‘We Over Me’ as you do life together.

Be Prepared for Wedding Stress

Your wedding is one day, but marriage is a lifetime. Stress causes a lack of connection between couples and planning a wedding can bring on a lot of it. Remember to consider the big picture when making choices. Discuss with your fiancé how they may feel about the decisions that need to be made. Healthy communication is a great tool for a successful relationship. If conflict starts to arise, don’t run from it; instead stop, relax, and discuss the issue that may be causing the conflict without letting emotions take over. Make sure you understand the issue before having an emotional conversation and say something you really don’t mean.

If you are looking for even more tips on how to start your life together, talk to couples who are already married. They can offer great advice, sometimes without being asked. Finding a mentor couple is another way to gain different perspectives about being married. When you engage in conversations and a premarital coaching program, you will discover the playful and practical parts of being

married and learn things that will impact the relationship while enjoying spending time together. If you hit a speed bump along the way, it’s okay to ask for help. Many couples wait too long before discussing important issues, taking those unresolved issues with them into their marriage. Remember, there is great value in talking through things now, learning how to communicate effectively, finding efficient strategies to handle conflict, figuring out finances, discussing intimacy/affection and knowing how you each view the roles and responsibilities in the relationship before starting your life together. By being proactive, the marriage will start strong and continue to grow ‘til death do you part.

The Slice of Heaven You’ve Been Looking For OAKDALE

When he was driving past a beautiful farm property every day on his way to work, Chris Stem never imagined that he would someday get to turn that property into a wedding venue.

“I kept telling my wife that I couldn’t let it turn into a housing development,” Chris says. “I think she thought I was a little crazy, but here we are!” After surviving 2020 after just opening in 2019, Oakdale is now fully immersed in the wedding boom and booking well into 2024.

When he chose to create the wedding space, one thing was completely clear to Chris: he had to maintain the integrity of the land and its rich history. The first step? Choosing a name with plenty of personal meaning.

The name Oakdale comes from partner Jeff Sears’ nearby family farm that has been passed down from generation to generation since 1902. Today, Oakdale still maintains its agricultural roots. It is the home of 75 head of cattle, pigs, sheep, and a booming hay operation. It is also Chris’s home and of course, a stunning wedding and event venue.

As you pull all details together for the big day, larger items tend to come first. There’s the venue, guest list, flowers and right at the top – the food!

Sometimes making food for the wedding day is just as special as the occasion itself. That is why we often see many going for something familiar and perhaps even with a sentimental meaning.

You may prefer to go to a restaurant for the reception and integrate a certain culture or country into the food selections. For example, maybe one of you is Italian and would like to incorporate your heritage into the food theme.

So, once a decision is made on a restaurant, what are some helpful tips that can assist with making the reception not only a success but also the process less stressful?

First, many restaurants offer the option to rent out private rooms, small spaces or even a “buy out” of the entire facility to hold wedding receptions. Do you have a favorite restaurant for special occasions in your life? Why not book at an establishment where you know the facility, the food, and perhaps even have a personal connection with?

When planning a reception, it is important to already have knowledge of what the restaurant offers, and what better way to explore choices than to go directly there to eat and try it out? Most now offer so many menu options for guests to ensure everyone’s dietary needs are met.

Restaurants are a great way to allow additional flexibility for the size of the party. For instance, specific rooms can be utilized and customized with the guest list.

Another advantage of having a reception at a restaurant is having a kitchen onsite which gives more options and convenience for preparation and food choices. Often restaurants will even allow you to create your own menu.

Usually when booking a wedding reception at a restaurant everything is included in one price. Appetizers, drinks, meals and even the cake! Many times they will have a room fee and most can even include the gratuity for the event.

What about decorating? Typically, restaurants already have a set decor, however most are open to creativity with colors and themes to bring your personal touch to the event.

There are also additional benefits. Having serving staff that already works at the restaurant gives them an added advantage of being familiar with the menu as well as the facility. Also, they usually have a manager or event coordinator who is a point person that can help you take care of organizing all of the details. This really helps with planning ahead.

Choosing a restaurant for your reception can be a “one stop shop” which can lead to less stress and easier planning, and who doesn’t love that?

When was the last time you communicated with each others feelings about the wedding planning process? When did you share expectations, hopes and dreams about the wedding and beyond? It’s so important to be able to talk about and share these thoughts with each other. Did you know that when sharing feelings, you:

• Build trust and intimacy

• Nurture growth and authenticity

• Affect physical health by keeping feelings bottled up

• Could think it is for the best by not sharing, but you could end up missing out on a great connection with your partner too

Learn how to open up to each other. You are two different people coming together to live the rest of your lives together and you both have valid thoughts, feelings, and expectations. Sharing life means sharing the good and the bad. Conflict is completely normal and knowing how to handle conflict constructively is huge in relationship satisfaction. So how can expectations be shared?

• Start by finding a good time to talk – “Hey, I want to talk about some things, when can we have some uninterrupted time together?”

• Then share what is on the heart or mind. If it stays in the head, or on the heart without being communicated, it can cause some problems down the road.

• Talk about what is expected to happen at the wedding, during the planning, at the rehearsal, etc.

Who will take out the trash? Take the dog for a walk? Clean the bathrooms? Do the laundry? Schedule date nights (that is a trick question)? And the list goes on and on. Remember if something is on your mind and concerning, worrying, or upsetting, let your partner know and work through the expectations and stress together as a team. Life is about having fun and when you can be playful, proactive, purpose driven, and practical in the marriage, the move from surviving to thriving happens much easier and quicker!

• Make sure the conversation is back and forth; in other words, listen to how your partner feels about the same topic or another that is important to them.

• Listen to understand, empathize, and problem solve as a team!

• Make sure your future spouse knows how important they are. Knowing that you can lean on each other for support will help. Remember that you’re on the same team!

The constant pressure of wedding planning isn’t just inconvenient or uncomfortable, it can have negative consequences on your health, overall effectiveness, and even on your relationship. De-stressing is a matter of wedding survival! Luckily, there are many great ways to relax before a wedding!

Go Back to Nature

Leave behind the cell phones and devices, and plan an outdoor weekend. Try hiking a scenic trail or spending the day kayaking or paddle boarding on a local river. Time communing with the outdoors offers quiet reflection, a chance to observe the beauty around us, and endorphin-releasing exercise for a healthier feeling inside and out.

Find a Festival

Richmond is world-famous for its many arts, food, and music festivals. While it’s easy to feel like there isn’t the time when all of the wedding details are weighing heavily on your mind, it only takes a few hours of distraction to “reset” your attitude and allow you to let off some steam.

Plan a Night Out

THINGS TO CONSIDER Before TOURING A VENUE

1. IS IT WITHIN YOUR BUDGET? This is the single most critical factor to think about before touring. If it’s out of reach financially, you shouldn’t get hopes up or begin the wedding by causing a family conflict. Connect with potential venues on your favorites list and speak openly with the wedding experts of those venues. They will value honesty and how respectful you are to be cognizant that the budget may not be able to accommodate the needs at their property. Honesty is always the best policy. Venues are generally 12-25% of the budget depending on what they include with their rentals.

2. DOES THE VENUE SET THE TONE FOR THE TYPE OF EVENT YOU ARE PLANNING TO HOST? The style of the property chosen for the celebration will intentionally lay the groundwork for the backdrop of the experiences.

Does it fit the theme or the vibe you are hoping for guests to experience? Choose a venue that speaks to what your personal preferences are.

HOW MANY VENUES DO YOU WANT TO SPEND THE DAY IN? Traditionally, it used to be common to have a ceremony venue separate than a celebration/reception venue. But that’s not the case anymore. What works best with your vision and the type of event you want to host? Are you planning to get ready at the ceremony venue? What is the travel time between each of these locations? It’s important to map out the wedding day timeline and calculate distance and time needed for travel. Ultimately, photography and videography vendors will be compensated to travel to multiple locations. Contemplate when family formal group pictures will be

taken since transportation is often provided. This will also increase logistical time needed.

4. ARE YOU HOPING FOR THE CEREMONY, COCKTAIL HOUR, DINNER, AND DANCING AT ONE LOCATION? If so, how important is it that those spaces are unique? What is the weather contingency plan in the case of rain, snow, or extreme temperatures?

5. DOES THE VENUE PROVIDE ADEQUATE GETTING READY SPACES FOR BOTH SIDES OF THE WEDDING PARTY? Think about the size of your wedding party and the amount of space and restrooms those individuals will need. Are showers available? Is there space for hair and makeup to be done on site? What amenities are available to the wedding party?

6. IS THERE SPACE FOR FAMILIES TO GET DRESSED? Will it feel like you still have your own space even if they are on site? Can they gather with their closest support system in their own spaces while you do the same in yours? Are there quiet and comfortable areas for them to sit and prepare for the emotional rollercoaster of their children getting married?

WHAT IS THE MAX GUEST CAPACITY?

Selecting the right sized property should allow easy adjustments in the case of inclement weather. Capacity limitations should be measured before touring facilities. Create a guest list and assume you will have 80% +/accepted RSVP’s. Look for a location that comfortably holds at least this number of people. Speak with the venue prior to touring because often the advertised or posted capacities are not the same as what is most comfortable.

10. NOISE ORDINANCES ARE IMPORTANT TO ASK ABOUT BEFORE TOURING. Most often they are set by local municipalities, not the venue themselves. If the goal is to dance until 3am, connect with the venue contacts at your top locations and find out the rules that govern their locations.

7. ARE THE “GETTING READY” SPACES ATTRACTIVE FOR PHOTOS OR WILL YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THOSE AREAS TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED? You will be investing in photographs and video, so charming backdrops could be very important to the wedding album.

8. HOW EARLY CAN YOU SETUP? Some properties allow for as little as one hour prior to event start time for setting up. Don’t forget deliveries, floral installations, lighting and production needs, band soundchecks, and catering preparation. The setup of bars alone and the icing of beverages can easily take a couple of hours. Inquire with the venue about early setup options once you understand what is included as part of a standard rental package.

11. WEATHER CONTINGENCIES ARE ONE OF THE LEAST ROMANTIC CONSIDERATIONS OF CHOOSING WEDDING AND RECEPTION VENUES. But for the event to run smoothly, it’s a critical part of the process. Hopefully rain, sleet, snow, hurricane, extreme heat, or other inclement weather will not ruin the long-anticipated day, but if it’s in the forecast, you will certainly be glad you made that consideration prior to booking. How much indoor (conditioned space) does the venue have? What are outdoor covered options? (Tents, pavilions, etc.) With rain plan options, are additional restrooms or lighting needed? Will fans, AC units, heaters, tent sidewalls, etc. be needed? If the rain plan is a tent, what about flooring? Is the rain going to puddle under the tent during a thunderstorm? How close can buses or transportation get to the ceremony and reception sites for drop off and pickups in inclement weather?

12.. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. Once you’ve toured a few properties, compared the pros and cons, and make sure the top choice fits the wedding day vision, listen to yourself! It’s just like shopping for a wedding gown, sometimes you just “know”.

Choosing a venue sets the tone for so much of the overall event experience. It sets the visual style and formality and sets the backdrop for your getting ready photos. It may also dictate some vendor selections. Try to be as contemplative as possible during the information gathering stages. Be diligent in touring top choices. Be transparent with the venue and ultimately lead with your heart. And most of all, enjoy the journey!

Learn Common Service Styles + the Pros and Cons to determine what is best for your wedding

The food at your wedding is undoubtedly one of the key elements of the celebration. I mean, let’s face it, you are throwing the most extravagant dinner party of your life! You want the guests to have a good time, be well taken care of, and most importantly, leave with not only a full heart, but a full stomach too.

Whether that be a menu filled with your favorite foods or cuisine that matches the theme of your big day, our amazing caterers can help make it happen. Here we will help you brainstorm your dream menu and provide some mouth-watering inspiration along the way!

Choosing a service style can be difficult. You may find yourself asking questions like; “How do we know what works best in our reception space?” “Are we limited in how many entrees we can select?” And of course, “What is this going to cost?” Once there is a better understanding of each, making this decision may be a little less daunting. So, let’s get to it!

Plated and Served

Plated and served dinners tend to be one of the more traditional service styles and have become quite popular since the dealings of COVID-19. These may be executed two ways: A dual/duet entree: each guest receives two proteins, a starch, and a vegetable.

Pre-selected guest’s choice: attendees select their entree when they submit their RSVP.

PROS:

Allows all the salads to be served (or preset) at once, and then the entree to be served on one plate with the accompanying vegetable and starch.

· Sets the tone that the evening is formal.

· You can work closely with the caterer on the plate presentation.

CONS:

A limited variety could pose a challenge to dietary restrictions.

One of the most expensive forms of service as a full set of utensils, china, and occasionally glassware is required to execute each course.

Requires a large overall staff for highquality service.

TIP: Be mindful of vegan/vegetarian friends. Ask the caterer if they can provide a plated vegan/vegetarian option. It’s also great to ensure the salad option can be altered to accommodate any dietary restrictions/allergies.

Family Style

Family Style dinners create a warm atmosphere at the table. Guests feel a sense of home as bowls and platters are passed around during conversation, giving

the feeling of comfort, as if at their own dinner table. Servers bring salad, proteins, and sides to each table and replenish as necessary.

PROS:

You can offer a larger variety, aiding to dietary restrictions and picky eaters.

· No waiting for guests to finish going through a buffet or station line.

· Encourages conversation between family and strangers alike.

CONS:

You will need large quantities of platters, bowls, and serving utensils which may mean a high rental cost.

· Ser ving dishes take up a large amount of space.

· Platters and bowls can be heavy. Be mindful of how the weight of these items may be for elderly guests to pass around the table.

Tip: Discuss table design ideas with the planner, florist, and caterer. It is important to all parties to have a clear understanding of what is being placed on the table. If elaborate table runners, florals, and votives are your tablescape vision, this is not the service style for you.

Buffet

Buffet dinners are the most common service style. They can be one sided or double sided, generally depending on guest count, to quickly move guests through dinner service. The coordination team, DJ, or catering captain can release tables, keeping the buffet organized and giving the catering staff time to replenish items that are running low.

PROS:

· Buffet tables can be designed in several ways, be aesthetically pleasing, and incorporate elements of your wedding to create personal touches.

Guests have the ability to personalize their plates.

· Generally, a smaller staff can execute successfully, but it will be based on the final guest count provided.

CONS:

Can take guests longer to maneuver through the line.

· You AND your caterer are unable to control portions.

· Guests serve themselves.

Tip: Ask the caterer to provide a menu at the front of the buffet and to have someone attend to help answer any questions the guests may have about the options presented. You don’t want the guests to “work” for their dinner.

Stations/Heavy Hors d’Oeuvres

Stations/Heavy Hors d’Oeuvres are a great option if you have a crowd that likes to mingle and doesn’t like to sit still. Food tables are placed throughout the reception to eliminate long lines. When offering stations/ heavy hors d’oeuvres, you will want to have a variety of options for guests, from seafood and beef to vegan and gluten free.

PROS:

· Food curious guests can talk with chefs at interactive spots, such as a carving station or an oyster shucking station.

A great way to incorporate you and your partner’s favorite cuisines or foods.

· Stations present an opportunity for stunning visual displays and photos.

CONS:

· Requires food to be open longer as guests tend to eat in a more casual, timeconsuming fashion.

· Cooking stations take longer as food is being made live.

you have multiple stations, rental costs will be higher. You need plates, utensils, and catering equipment at each one.

Tip: You do not need to provide seating for the entire guest count. Consider seating for ¹⁄3-½ of it. You can scatter cocktail tables around the reception space for additional surfaces for guests to pause and eat.

As you journey through the planning process, the wedding and the service style should reflect you and your partner. If still unsure, don’t be afraid to ask family, friends, and of course, the caterer. They have years of experience, and have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. They will be able to help navigate through the decision-making process and throw a soiree that is sure to please.

7 Ways to Wow Your Guests

1. Choose a wow factor venue!

Consider all the various ways you hope guests will experience the day. The property will dictate what guests see, feel, smell, touch, sometimes taste, and experience. Will they be comfortable in all temperatures? Are there ample restrooms for the headcount? Are the restrooms up to the standards you expect for the type of event you are having? Is there natural light for photos?

2. Offer a welcome beverage before the ceremony or immediately following, before the guests line up in a bar line for a drink or a bathroom break. This will be such a pleasant surprise for them and really elevate their experience. It will significantly support the bartending team as well. They are extremely busy in the hour that follows the ceremony so serving a welcome beverage is an incredible support to the service team.

3. Provide transportation for as many guests as the budget allows,

especially for those who have traveled out of town and are unfamiliar with the area.

If heavy drinking is expected, shuttle that group as well, especially at the end of the night. The safety of the guests is of the upmost importance, and since the COVID pandemic, ride services like UBER and LYFT can be unreliable. Many of the incredible venues are in more rural locations where it is harder to get a taxi or on call vehicle service. Charted transportation is the way to plan!

4. If it fits your venue, consider doing a ceremony/cocktail hour/dinner/dancing all at one facility, or without guests having to drive between sites.

The shuffling between various locations can add so much stress and unexpected issues such as travel delays, traffic jams, and parking headaches. If important relatives are stuck in traffic, you will not want to continue the event without them, and it will affect the entire wedding day timeline and ultimately detract from the celebration timeframe.

Bonus tip: Select an attractive bookcase or display and have the florist do a little styling. Perfect for the photo album!

5. Create a budget.

It’s always better to invite the amount you can afford to “host well”, rather than a massive number of attendees because you feel obligated. Being a guest at a wedding is such a treat, make decisions that help the guests feel special and cared for. It’s better to host 80 very well than 180 in an inadequate way.

6. Serve late night food!

So much of the take away from the memorable guest experience will be related to how they feel when they leave. If their tummies are full – they will remember your event fondly. Reception food choices can be fun and should reflect your personality! Popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, chicken and waffles, gelato, cheese sticks, a pretzel bar – you name it, the options are endless! Choose something fun and unique for a memorable wow feature.

7. Hire the best event planner you can afford.

This will buy the best peace of mind you will need to be able to relax and enjoy the weekend of the event. If you’ve engaged with a seasoned professional, they will be able to guide and lead the process to a successful event. The guests will notice how smoothly everything runs and how relaxed you and the family are. Many families say that a skilled event planning team is one of the best investments of their wedding weekend!

The “To Do’s” Before the “I Do’s” Rentals – The Forgotten Checklist

Depending on where your reception is taking place, rentals may play an integral part in making sure you and your guests have a fantastic experience. Plates, glassware, utensils, tables, and chairs are among the most common items needed, but there are several other things to consider when making sure nothing is forgotten, especially if you are renting a tent. Ask yourself these questions and get your vendors involved to make sure everything is covered.

❑ Do you need electrical power?

If you are having a beautiful outdoor wedding under a tent, you will likely need additional power sources. Many vendors will require it.

*TIP – Look into generator rentals.

❑ Do you have enough catering equipment?

Check with your venue, caterer, or food provider to see what is included. You can always rent or buy additional items such as tables, linens, chafing dishes, serving utensils, beverage items, etc.

*TIP – Prepare for more than you think you need.

❑ Water and trash – Did you remember these essentials?

Do you have access to either of these onsite or by your caterer/ bartender? If not, then you can rent both!

*TIP – Look into water station rentals and trash bins with extra liners.

There are so many beautiful and affordable tent rental styles to choose from these days. Here are a few questions to answer and considerations to make:

❑ If you are renting a tent, is the ground primarily a firm flat area?

❑ Is the location easily accessible for delivery and pickup with a large truck?

❑ When can the rental company deliver and install as well as pick up and break down?

❑ Will a venue contact, or coordinator be onsite during setup and breakdown?

❑ Do you need a catering/food prep tent?

❑ Do you have any gas, water, or sewer lines in the yard? Make sure to call the utility company if you are at a private residence.

❑ Do you need a permit? Make sure you have them for ABC and any tents over 900 sq. ft.

❑ When you got to go, you got to go! Where is the restroom?

Do you have access to restrooms, or do you need additional restroom facilities?

*TIP – Consider portable restroom trailers for outdoor weddings. They’re actually very nice!

❑ Do you have guests with special accommodations attending your wedding?

Take into consideration your guests with dietary restrictions, handicapped accommodations, or even elderly family members.

*TIP – Talk to your food provider, pay attention to parking and terrain the venue, and provide your loved ones with a comfortable chair to enjoy the evening with you.

❑ Where will everyone park?

Make sure there is ample parking for all guests.

5 Things You Need to Know Before Gown Shopping

Wedding gown shopping is one of the most exciting steps of the planning process. However, it can also be one of the most stressful. Don’t get so overwhelmed that you turn into the dreaded “bridezilla”. So, how in the world do we make it easier? The following list includes some tips to think about before the dress appointment.

1. Don’t be afraid to be unique.

The year 2022 is allowing people to feel more comfortable expressing themselves, but it can still be hard to step out of the social norm. You don’t have to wear a pure white ball gown, stilettos or a veil to be considered bridal appropriate. It’s your wedding! You deserve to feel beautiful, comfortable, and confident. Anybody who thinks otherwise can get a quick uninvited email straight to their inbox. Pick the short gown or the longer one. Choose a white gown, a black one, or both! Ditch the dress and choose a jumpsuit. Whatever makes you who you are should be reflected in how you feel in your wedding attire.

2. Bring the RIGHT people.

We all want our “people” - aka support systems - with us when deciding on our dream gown (excluding those one or two people we are forced to invite). However, not everybody has the same opinion. Exercise crowd control by keeping it small and aim for about 2-4 trusted guests. The other lovely (you can define what that means) family and friends that you’d like to invite or not invite but feel like you should, can still feel a part of the special moment by getting pictures after the appointment. Gown shopping is STRESSFUL so don’t make it harder by adding 10 extra opinions from those who have various style preferences that may not align with yours.

3. Trust your gut.

You are right one hundred percent of the time

when it comes to wedding gown shopping. How do I know? Because everything is completely up to you! The family and friends brought along are more than welcome to add their input. However, you are the only person that knows if you can see yourself walking down the aisle in that gown. You are the only person that knows a certain veil could get in the way, so you opt for a headpiece. You are the only person who knows heels are not an option and sneakers are preferred. Listen to the opinions of loved ones, but don’t let them overpower yours. They are there to share in YOUR experience for this big day but not add to the stress or make it their own.

4. You might surprise yourself.

Let the stylists get to know you. Your Pinterest board could be a guide but stay open to other possibilities. It’s like buying clothes at a store, just a whole lot more fun; some things look phenomenal on the mannequin but may not be a good fit. (Even

if you originally thought they were going to look perfect!) Change is okay. If buying a ballgown was originally out of the question and you end up falling in love – go for it! Just because your mind was made up does not mean there's no room for change.

5. Do some homework.

This could sound contradictory, but hear us out. Do some research. We’re not saying to know everything you want when going in, but if you have favorite designers, use the designers’ store locator to find boutiques nearby that carry their line. If you prefer a more intimate experience, find salons that offer private or one-on-one appointments where you have a personal stylist. If you feel more confident in shapewear and makeup, come ready! Set yourself up for success and have fun because this day is all about you in the end!

It is no surprise that the round brilliant cut diamond has been the most popular diamond shape for centuries. Its classic and timeless style truly sparkles like no other. However, fancy shaped diamonds, which include all diamonds other than a round cut, have risen to the forefront of popularity for the modern, contemporary bride. From the clean lines of an emerald cut to the beauty and curvature of an oval cut, it is essential to educate yourselves on the main differences between each of them. For instance, there is a distinctiveness in the dimensions and characteristics of each individual shape, thus it’s essential to see fancy shaped diamonds in person. Also, we mustn’t forget that fancy shapes run you about 20% less in cost, in comparison to their round counterparts.

Oval cut and pear-shaped diamonds are more popular than ever since their gorgeous shape has a lot of unique appeal. Elongated diamond shapes like this create the illusion the diamond is larger in size. Both cuts have an amazing brilliance and fire to them which make them even more desirable. It is important to note that these fancy shapes come in a variety of sizes from slim to wide cuts, so it is necessary to research a variety of diamond dimensions so that you get exactly what you’re looking for. Worn either up/down, east/west, as a solitaire, or a three-stone--oval cut diamonds are also very versatile. With their curved edges there is a great durability factor as there are no pointed edges exposed to potential damage.

The cushion cut diamond has a wonderful brilliance that is seen within this shape, and its curved edges create a very subtle and soft look. A cushion cut combines the square cut of a princess with the round edges of a round cut diamond. Very similar to other fancy cut diamonds, cushions have varying dimensions that make them show up either more squared shaped or more rectangular — so it’s very important to look at a variety of dimensions and sizes. Modern day cushion cuts are classified as modified brilliant and brilliant cushions. Take a look at both to decide which you love the most. Like any diamond purchase, you have to see it with your own eyes.

Step cut diamonds such as emerald and asscher cuts produce a more unique look, with less brilliance, and instead a ‘mirror effect’. This style is best known for its precision and sophistication. With less fire, these cuts create long lines of light and shadows of darkness. Emerald cuts can be square cut similar to an asscher or can appear narrow and rectangular. As for any step cut, it’s important to review all of the diamond’s characteristics prior to making the big decision. Lastly, clarity becomes very important in these shapes, as the table or face of the diamond is more visible causing any imperfections or inclusions to be magnified.

IS A “First Look” FOR YOU?

Do you know why it was once considered “bad luck” for the groom to see the bride before the wedding? The tradition has less-than-romantic origins.

During the time when arranged marriages were customary, the betrothed couple was not allowed to see each other before the wedding. Marriage, for many families, was essentially a “business deal”. The father, who was the head of the household, would ideally marry off his daughter to a rich, land-owning male. Once the engagement was contracted, the parents would keep the couple apart, fearing that if the groom saw the bride before the wedding and found her unattractive, he wouldn’t go through with the marriage. While today we think of the veil as a beautiful bridal accessory, its original purpose was to keep the groom from finding out what the bride looked like until the last possible minute, when it was too late to back out of the transaction. Romantic, right?

In today’s modern understanding of first looks, we are obviously past the whole notion of “It’s bad luck to see a bride before the wedding”. Go on social media, and one can easily see the many Instagram reels, TikToks and images on our feeds of emotional, unique, and beautiful first looks exchanged between couples. If you still wonder whether this is right for you, here are three reasons to consider having one, as well as three alternative ideas:

Maximize your time for photos without sacrificing time at the reception.

While you may have the photographer for 8-10 hours, it’s amazing how fast time flies on the day of the wedding, and how easily the timeline can get sidetracked. Most often, portraits with family and the bridal party take longer than expected, and then the next thing you know, there is less than 15 minutes to take romantic images of just you as a couple. When you make the first look a priority, it gives time for those special portraits without being rushed to the cocktail hour or reception. Having the opportunity to get more photographs of just you two together and in such a candid and special moment can definitely be worth it!

Diminish pre-wedding nerves.

Some couples have a hard time showing emotion in front of a crowd, and understandably so. There are a lot of feelings mounting up to that moment of seeing each other for the first time. When you do a first look with just you and your spouse-to-be (with photographers and videographers discreetly in the background), it gives you both the chance to be yourselves freely while seeing each other for the first time, without a crowd of loved ones snapping phone photos.

Getting the right mix for your bouquet is oh so critical today. No one wants to talk about COVID anymore, but the fact is, everyone is still dealing with the long-term effects of fewer employees, fewer shippers, and fewer flights. This is true for those in the floristry industry as well. So what does this mean for brides who are looking for the perfect bouquet? How do you go about planning, when to order, and which to choose? The good news is availability is rebounding, and your florist knows what to recommend if it is necessary to replace a flower for another or add a new one to pull it all together.

To get started, check for flowers that are in season. You will also want to know what is available year-round. Here is a short list of popular wedding flowers that may be found all year:

Calla Lilies – white, blush pink, pink, purple, eggplant, yellow, red, orange and novelty items

Dianthus – purple, pink, white

Delphinium – dark blue, light blue, lavender, white

Freesia – pink, white, purple, lavender, red, orange, yellow

Hydrangea – white, blue, green, pink, purple

Lilies – all types and most colors

Lisianthus – lavender, purple, white, pink, apricot

The florist should be working on your behalf, checking availability as well as reasonable substitutes. Stay in touch but also be patient. Your florist is contacting a wholesaler, who is contacting a buyer, who is contacting a farmer or grower, so it may take a little time to get answers. If you haven’t heard back after 5 or 6 days, a gentle reminder is a good idea. Your florist wants the best possible outcome for you. Their most fulfilling moment is when they hear you say, “I love my bouquet!” or “My flowers were just what I imagined they would be!”

For some vendors tipping is optional, some expect it, and others already have it built into their contracts.

When the tricks turn into treats, the Halloween fairytale of Andrea and Seth. They both have a huge passion for working in the wedding industry, but who knew that would lead to their own happily ever after? Through mutual friends, Andrea and Seth met on Halloween night. The two were “just friends” for a while before they became official. Once they started dating, as Andrea says, “the rest is history.”

As the devoted businesswoman she is, Andrea was partaking in a styled shoot for her company. As she was prepping for headshots, she turned around and Seth was down on one knee. She had NO idea, and it was the sweetest surprise. The big question was followed up with a pop, a toast, and a sip of champagne, accompanied by lots of calls to friends and family to celebrate.

The two are no strangers to the wedding world, so they both knew exactly what they wanted from the start. Leeloo, their adorable furry friend, started the night off by walking down the aisle with Seth. They had a beautiful Jewish ceremony, and Seth’s family took turns reading passages.

It was of major importance to them to have Andrea’s ethnicity and Seth’s Jewish background implemented into the wedding. So after the ceremony, the guests headed to cocktail hour, where they enjoyed Spanish music and Spanish inspired appetizers topped with a mini Nicaraguan flag.

As big foodies, they worked super hard on making sure the menu was just right. Alongside having a love for food, they also made sure the music would WOW the guests, especially since Seth is a wedding DJ!

It can be super easy to get wrapped up in everything going on that you forget to just enjoy the moment. For Seth and Andrea, they made sure to take everything in and enjoy each other. One of their favorite moments was getting to take photos with their family. They felt like time was standing still and they could just be surrounded by their loved ones. The online love story of a First Sergeant and a college professor - Ben & Chris. Rightfully so, these two had quite the busy schedules. They landed on the idea of a first date over breakfast. Who doesn’t love breakfast? The truth is, it started as breakfast, then breakfast turned into lunch, lunch turned into drinks, and drinks turned into the beginning of their lifetime together.

A year after their first date in December 2019 they embarked on a weekend getaway to attend a Christmas party. Their first stop of the weekend was at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens which was covered in sparkly Christmas lights - dreamy already, but it gets better. Not only was the garden lit up, but it was also crawling with dogs in sweaters! The dogs made Ben a little more nervous than he originally was for lack of privacy, but Chris was in Christmas dog heaven! They stopped for a quick selfie when Ben got down on one knee and popped the question.

As Chris says, “There are no rules for gay proposals”, and it was his turn to surprise Ben! The plan was for Chris to propose to Ben on Valentine’s Day 2020. Instead of the perfect morning envisioned, the water heater broke. This resulted in spending lots of money and Chris wondering if he should delay the proposal. Instead, he realized that “life and love are not about perfect moments, but those gloriously imperfect days and moments that define a relationship.” Chris got the fur babies (two Great Danes and a hound) all dressed up. Ben walked in and saw the adorable pups and Chris on one knee ready to propose.

It was a true winter wonderland-themed wedding. With the help of friends Megan and Jenna, many came together to bring Ben’s vision to life. This included around thirty Christmas trees! They were married by Chris’s aunt, who read the same poem that she read at Chris’s parent’s wedding in 1978. As if that wasn’t more than perfect already, they walked down the aisle after the ceremony to Sleigh Ride and had the guests sign a Christmas ornament to hang on a unique tree.

Leading up to the big day Chris and Ben had been secretly practicing for their big showstopper with a dance coach and choreographer. Let’s just say the crowd was VERY blown away by their performance at the reception! This became the highlight of their winter-wonderland dream wedding.

Brenna and Alex met through mutual friends in 2016 at a local sports bar. Alex, who was living in DC at the time, was in Richmond visiting a friend. Their first official date was at a wine bar in DC but the first date in RVA was at Lemaire. Alex eventually moved to Richmond for a job, and the two have been together ever since!

Alex proposed in September 2020 at a winery in Charlottesville. He knew that Brenna did not want to be around a lot of people when that moment came, but she did want a lot of pictures. Alex pulled it off to perfection as he invited four of their closest friends to a quiet overlook and also had her parents on Facetime so they could see it. As Brenna states, “It was a fantastic surprise!”

For the reception, Alex and Brenna chose the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). Brenna actually met Alex’s parents there for the first time – so it has always been a special place for the couple. As Brenna recalls, “When we lived closer to the VMFA at the beginning of Covid, we would walk there and sit in the grass and talkit was a great way to spend time together.”

Brenna knew she wanted a simple, elegant, timeless, and neutral color palette. The VMFA’s Marble Hall was ideal as “you do not need to add too much decor because the room itself does all the talking for you.” Vogue Flowers suggested adding apricot hues to the florals which really brought out the color of the walls. Brenna loved that idea!

It was important to Brenna and Alex to have a casual atmosphere where guests could eat, drink, and dance whenever they wanted. The two opted for a “never ending cocktail” type reception where food was passed, and stations were available all night long. There was also a table at the front with family wedding pictures. According to Brenna, “I loved being able to have our family members involved in the wedding in that way – especially those that are no longer with us. It was a beautiful touch!”

Cindy and Jenny met at work in 2018 at a local gym where both were personal trainers. The two instantly clicked and started chatting away. According to Cindy, “We both felt a comforting energy that kept drawing us into each other. We were friends for a while, but it did slowly blossom.”

On an impromptu hiking trip to Acadia National Park in Maine, the first proposal took place. Cindy recalls, “On our second day, we stopped by a body of water. While I was looking around at all of the fish, Jenny was sneaking around behind me getting a proposal ready. She put the ring on a red heart shaped leaf she found, placed it in the water and then got my attention. When I turned around, I saw a red leaf floating in the water and a big shimmery ring on top. Jenny asked me to marry her, and I of course said yes!”

Cindy had actually planned on proposing in Maine as well. Trying to keep her cool while figuring out how to do it now, she ended up proposing on a different day on another hike. The two hiked up a big mountain and come across an overlook. “I told Jenny I wanted to get a photo of her sitting on the edge and looking off into the distance. That gave me an opportunity to get my ring out. I then pulled out my camera, snapped a pic when she turned around and asked if she would marry me. She deserved a proper proposal too.”

For the ceremony and reception, they chose an outdoor venue with shelter in case of rain. The ceremony was short, sweet and secular. For the wedding procession, the couple walked up the aisle together as equals.

Both Cindy and Jenny are very down to earth, nature loving gals. “We wanted something that reflected that so we went with a rustic and boho theme.” One of the things they wanted to wow their guests with was the flowers. Flowers Make Scents made that happen and had their wedding “look like it was out of a fairy tale.” The wildflower theme was the perfect background while they danced the night away with their favorite people.

Do I have to send out a Save the Date?

No, you don’t need to send out a Save the Date. This is a fairly new practice in the wedding industry over the last decade, but with the amount of time and expense that goes into a wedding, it is a great way to let your guests know the date and information ahead of time. Save the Dates are especially helpful for destination weddings since more planning is necessary. It’s always nice to give your guests extra time to make arrangements.

What information should be included on my Save the Date?

The main points of the wedding day are what needs to be conveyed. The couple’s names and picture (optional), date, and city/state. One of the most important pieces of information you can give your guests is your wedding website. Websites do not belong on the wedding invitation which makes the Save the Date the perfect place to give them this information.

When should I send my Save the Dates and Invitations?

Save the Dates can be sent out six months to a year in advance of the wedding. If your celebration is a destination wedding or during a busy time of the year, such as during summer vacation or a holiday weekend, you may want to send them at least six to eight months ahead of time so they can plan around these dates and arrange for time off work.

For wedding invitations, we typically recommend six to eight weeks. If you did not send a Save the Date,

consider sending them out around the eight-week mark. Sending them out three months or more ahead of time has become a trend, but unfortunately, it hasn’t ultimately helped with people sending back responses.

Should I order invitations online?

There are a few reputable invitation sites, but the customer service is historically lacking and you have little recourse if there is a problem, misprint, or wrong information. There is usually no proofing with online companies so you are on your own for spelling and etiquette. Invitations are something that is best-chosen in-person by seeing and feeling the stock, the actual printing on the stock, and having a professional to help you with etiquette. There are a lot of rules of etiquette that are involved in the designing and wording of invitations that you may not be privy to. You can avoid future embarrassment and hurt feelings by going to a professional.

The assumption that online invitation sites offer cheaper pricing is debatable, as most are digitally printed and mass-produced. Unfortunately, once you make the upgrades to the paper, envelopes, etc., the cost is very comparable to a local stationer’s pricing, sometimes more. You indeed get what you pay for, and fortunately for local stationers, a cottage industry of “fixing” online invitation mistakes has emerged but that is an added expense that you could have avoided in the beginning.

What is the cost of an invitation?

Invitation pricing is determined

by different factors. The printing process plays a large part. If you are looking for letterpress or engraving, these tend to be the higher priced invitation choices. Thermography and flat or digital printing are typically less expensive options. Paper or stock can go from luxe, thick cotton papers to more costeffective, thinner stocks. Another factor that will affect the price is the number of pieces you need in your invitation suite. Most people require an invitation with an envelope, a response card with envelope, and some need to add a details card or reception card as well. Keep in mind that a typical greeting card is around $5.00 each. A beautiful invitation can start anywhere from $4.00$5.00 each and go up from there.

Should I use a website for RSVPs?

Websites are a convenient way to get information to your guests, and most offer a way to RSVP to the wedding as well. When trying to decide if you will do a mail-back response or have people reply online you need to think of everyone on the guestlist. Just because it is convenient for you and your friends to answer online does not mean your grandparents and older guests can respond this way. Some don’t feel comfortable with this method, and some may not have the equipment. In many cases, couples include a phone number for them to call as well as the web address. In other instances, couples have printed enough of the mailed responses for those that would be more apt to answer in this manner. Either way, you want to be sure all your guests feel equally included and can easily respond to your invitation.

Where should I put our registry information?

Information about your registry should NEVER go on the invitation itself…EVER. When you invite someone to an event, especially something as special as a wedding, you are requesting their presence, NOT their presents. Including registry information can be seen as presumptuous and ill-mannered.

If you wish for your guests to have your registry information you can put it on your website, or you can add in another small card or on a details card in the invitation suite, or by word of mouth, but never on the actual invitation.

What postage costs should I factor into the cost of invitations?

Postage is often a forgotten part of the invitation process. The number of pieces you have in your suite, as well as the type of stock they are printed on, will affect the weight of the invitation, therefore, the cost of postage. Invitations typically require more postage than the average piece of mail. We always recommend taking a fully assembled invitation to the post office and let them weigh it so you know exactly how much postage is required. Response cards require less than the invitation, but be sure to put a stamp on the response card envelopes when

assembling the invitations so your guests can reply promptly. When taking your invitations to the post office we always recommend that you ask to have them hand canceled. This will decrease the amount of machinery sorting your invitations will incur, which will also minimize the chances of damage.

After the Aisle: THE BLENDED FAMILY

In 1969, a situation comedy was introduced to the American public about a man who was a widower with three sons. He met and subsequently married a lady, who by the way, was a widow, who had three young daughters of her own. Well, they soon married and thus became America’s most wellloved blended family, The Brady Bunch. We watched as well as laughed at the many shenanigans had by the Brady bunch. But is it always so easy?

When bringing two separate families together as one, it may often be very challenging and somewhat difficult. The children may not be as smitten with your future spouse as you are. They may be envious of this person who is now taking up your time or putting the smile on your face that used to be limited to only them. There may be resentment from the child of your mate, especially when they are used to having their parent all to themselves. The bonus parent may be viewed as an intrusion. They may not appreciate someone else living in their space. They may also resent someone, who is not their biological parent giving advice or telling them what to do. Additionally, there may be resentment from the child’s other biological parent if that new one is fueling the child with their own ill feelings.

There are some things that should be discussed and taken under consideration. First, take the time to get to know the bonus children in the relationship. You are joining two already made families. Find out what the child’s interests are. Talk with them and not to them. Do not be quick to usurp authority over the bonus child. This may lead to more friction in the relationship, especially from the other biological parent. Don’t “bribe” your bonus children with gifts to win their favor. Be kind. Be patient. Be quiet. There are times when you want to react in retaliation to something that has been said in anger, but don’t respond. Often, children act out feelings in not only saying things that are rude but doing mean and spiteful things as well. Communicate to your future spouse if there is a situation in which things are being said and done by the bonus children that are disrespectful. Discuss how this makes you feel, and how you would like the relationship to be. Although it may not seem like it, the child is probably acting out in rebellion and anger toward the situation and not to you personally. Parent all children equally. Do not favor one set

over the other. Treat all involved with the same instruction, love, and discipline. All discipline should come from the biological parent until love and trust has been established.

Do not speak ill of the other biological parent. If possible, keep an open line of communication and respect for the other parent and refrain from causing a scene or saying unkind things about anyone. If there is a situation where one is deceased, place a picture in their bedroom and insure the child that you are not trying to replace the now deceased parent, but that you are there if and when needed. You may find that you can parent harmoniously with all parties involved.

INCLUDE THE BONUS CHILDREN, AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, IN THE PLANNING OF THE WEDDING. Allow them to take part in the ceremony. One idea is have them pour sand in a vase to signify the unification of the two families. A bride may opt to have their son walk them down the aisle or stand in as the groom’s “best man”. The groom may gift the bride’s daughter a small present or flowers. Some couples may read handcrafted notes to the bonus children to ensure them that they are there to add love, security, and stability to all members of the family, not just the spouse.

The blended family can be a harmonious and wonderful unit. Children in these families often benefit from having four parents that love them and support them along with a multitude of bonus grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins as well. It may be a lot of work at the beginning, but just as we all saw in the situation comedy of the 1960’s, there can be a very eventful, humorous, close knit and fun-filled happily ever after for the blended family.

GRATUITIES For your caterer or food service, gratuity is always added into your bottom line, but you do have other wonderful vendors on the day of that you can treat.
