Fall is here, and it’s ready to be lived in full. Let’s live it together, in every shade, every story, and every shared moment.

10 Habits to Boost Your Productivity and Confidence

AS AUTUMN ARRIVES, SOMETHING TRANSFORMATIVE TAKES PLACE, NOT ONLY IN NATURE BUT ALSO WITHIN US.

Just as trees gracefully shed leaves, making room for new growth, we too can embrace this season as an opportunity to shed habits that no longer serve us. Fall is more than just a change in temperature or scenery; it’s a personal invitation to reset our lives, ignite fresh ambitions, and strengthen the foundation of our confidence and productivity.

In my own journey, I’ve learned that productivity and confidence are more deeply intertwined than we realize. Success breeds confidence, and confidence inspires us to continue succeeding. Here, I share ten insightful habits that I’ve discovered and adopted, each carrying the potential to elevate your productivity and empower you with renewed self-assurance.

Start Your Day with Purpose

The first moments of your day set the pace for everything that follows. Cultivate a morning routine that grounds you in intention, whether it’s journaling your thoughts, practicing meditation, or savoring quiet moments of reflection. These rituals foster clarity and readiness, allowing you to step into your day with unwavering purpose.

Define Your Intentions Clearly

Intentions are powerful; they serve as the compass guiding your actions. Instead of vaguely hoping for success, outline specific goals with clear, achievable milestones. By defining your intentions clearly, you transform ambitions into attainable steps, reinforcing your belief in your capabilities.

1 5 2 6 3

Guard Your Time Wisely

Time is your most precious resource. Instead of constantly racing against the clock, consciously choose where to invest your attention. Prioritize tasks by significance rather than urgency alone, creating space for meaningful work that reflects your true priorities.

Invite Feedback as a Catalyst for Growth

One of the greatest lessons I’ve embraced is that feedback is not criticism, it’s an invitation to excellence. When we invite constructive insight from those we trust and respect, we open ourselves to refinement, growth, and ultimately a strengthened sense of self-worth.

Move Your Body, Nourish Your Mind

Physical movement is intricately linked to cognitive clarity and emotional resilience. Find joy in physical activities that align with your interests, whether it’s cycling, yoga, or simply a daily walk. Movement replenishes energy, sharpens focus, and contributes significantly to an overall sense of wellbeing.

7 4 8

Become a Lifelong Student

Never underestimate the power of curiosity. Commit to lifelong learning by actively seeking knowledge and experiences that broaden your perspective. Attend seminars, enroll in classes, read widely, and remain open to new ideas. A mind in perpetual learning mode remains adaptable, productive, and confident.

Create an Environment that Inspires

The spaces you inhabit directly influence your mindset. Transform your workspace into a sanctuary of inspiration and clarity. Keep your surroundings orderly, inviting, and reflective of your aspirations. A thoughtfully curated environment facilitates creativity, productivity, and a renewed sense of possibility.

Cultivate Genuine Connections

Building meaningful relationships is one of the most underestimated pathways to confidence. Be intentional in your connections, seeking out authentic interactions over superficial networking. Engage deeply, listen intently, and offer genuine support. The confidence we draw from genuine human connection is immeasurable.

Practice Daily Gratitude

Gratitude is transformative. When we acknowledge even small victories or blessings, we shift our focus from what is lacking to what is abundant. Take time each day to genuinely appreciate moments, experiences, and people that enrich your life. Gratitude is the gateway to optimism and unwavering confidence.

Honor the Power of Rest

Rest is not a luxury; it’s an essential component of sustained productivity and self-confidence. Permit yourself to pause, relax, and recharge regularly. When you respect your own need for rest, you affirm your inherent worth beyond accomplishments.

My Personal Call to Action

Reflecting on my personal journey, I’ve come to a profound realization: meaningful productivity and lasting confidence emerge from a deeper understanding of ourselves and intentional daily habits. Autumn’s quiet encouragement to reset and recalibrate offers each of us the chance to align more closely with our true potential.

I invite you, dear reader, to step into this fall with a renewed commitment to yourself. Choose at least two of these habits and observe the transformative impact they have on your productivity, confidence, and overall wellbeing. As we embrace intentional living, we do not merely become more productive or confident, we become more fulfilled, balanced, and authentically ourselves.

Let this fall reset be the beginning of your most productive, confident, and inspired season yet. l

JEFFREY’S

A

COMMANDING

CLASSIC FOR Austin’s Inner Circle

IN A CITY THAT EVOLVES FASTER THAN ITS SKYLINE, JEFFREY’S REMAINS DELIBERATELY UNHURRIED.

NESTLED IN THE HEART OF CLARKSVILLE SINCE 1975, THIS REVERED FINE DINING INSTITUTION HAS NEVER FOLLOWED TRENDS.

It has set the tone for what elegance should feel like. It’s the rare kind of place that has earned its legacy not by reinvention, but by refinement, where innovation is subtle, and consistency is celebrated. While other restaurants chase relevance, Jeffrey’s quietly commands loyalty.

As our Seat of Power series continues within The InFluential Table, we return not to what’s new, but to what’s enduring. The restaurants that don’t need to compete for attention because they already hold our

respect. These aren’t the places that rely on marketing gimmicks or social buzz, they rely on memory, ritual, and a quiet kind of magic that keeps guests coming back year after year. Jeffrey’s is not just a restaurant. It’s a compass point for those who value craftsmanship over spectacle.

Jeffrey’s doesn’t declare itself iconic. It simply behaves like it. From the valet who greets you like an old friend to the muted lighting that flatters the moment, every detail whispers of refinement. There’s no spectacle here, only substance. The ambiance feels tailored, as

if every guest were imagined in advance. It’s a dining room where confidence isn’t just welcomed, it’s mirrored. This is where power brokers, artists, CEOs, and lifelong Austinites find common ground.

And then comes the martini cart, gliding across the room like a ritual. Stirred to your specifications, served with a nod. It’s less about the cocktail and more about the ceremony of being known. A guest’s preferences are remembered not because of good customer service, but because hospitality here is muscle memory. The cart is emblematic of Jeffrey’s charm: understated, elegant, and precise. This is luxury with a memory, not just of your drink, but of your presence.

The dining room at Jeffrey’s is a study in poised luxury: velvet banquettes, curated art, the faint clink of glassware, and conversations that matter. This is a room where secrets are shared, careers are toasted, and silence is allowed to speak. The lighting, soft and golden, encourages guests to lean in. Every corner of the space invites trust, reflection, and celebration. Even on a busy evening, there’s calm, a gentle heartbeat that moves the room without ever rushing it.

The menu? A love letter to classic French technique and Texas bravado. Think dry aged porterhouse, butter

poached lobster, crispy oysters, and seasonal soufflés that float like a promise. But the true hallmark isn’t just what’s served. It’s how it’s remembered. Ingredients are seasonal but thoughtful, and execution is consistently remarkable. Each dish feels intentional; each course arrives as if perfectly timed to the pace of conversation. There’s no need to ask what’s good, it already is.

What makes Jeffrey’s unforgettable isn’t just its food. It’s the calm confidence of the experience. Servers who know your rhythm. A sommelier who curates without condescension. A chef whose mastery is felt,

not flaunted. It’s the ability to be enveloped by the experience without being overwhelmed. You leave feeling cared for, never managed. This is hospitality at its highest form, thoughtful, gracious, invisible when it should be, and beautifully present when needed.

Here, hospitality is more than service. It’s a legacy passed from table to table, evening to evening, generation to generation. The quiet nods between staff and regulars, the knowing glances when a guest returns after many years, these aren’t rehearsed moments. They’re part of the soul of Jeffrey’s. A place that teaches us the best kind of welcome is one that doesn’t need to be spoken aloud. It simply exists, waiting for your return.

Jeffrey’s doesn’t require you to prove yourself. It’s already decided you belong, if you understand the

value of stillness, subtlety, and a soufflé that arrives precisely when it should. This isn’t a restaurant for the restless. It’s a home for those who appreciate pacing, grace, and intention. And in a world that often mistakes noise for success, Jeffrey’s reminds us confidence needs no announcement.

“Jeffrey’s doesn’t strive to impress. It invites you to remember who you are.”

~ William T. Jackson, ABA, B.Acy., MBA

As part of our InFluential Table editorial feature and a defining entry in our ongoing Seat of Power series, Jeffrey’s stands anchored in excellence. It’s a space where power feels gracious, time slows down with purpose, and presence is everything. The experience is so fluid, so artfully composed, that even after dessert, you feel no urgency to leave. There’s an afterglow to dining here, a lingering sense that something meaningful has just occurred.

If you’re seeking more than a reservation, if you’re looking for a place where the experience meets the moment, you’ll find it at Jeffrey’s. They’ve been expecting you. And they’ll be ready the next time you return, whether in celebration or quiet reflection.

Talking Tequila

AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR SPIRITS, TEQUILA HAS A RICH HERITAGE ROOTED IN TRADITIONAL MEXICAN

CRAFTSMANSHIP.

Yet, many people may not be aware of its history or all that goes into producing the spirit. Understanding the production process can reveal the commitment to quality, artistry and craftsmanship that defines one of Mexico’s greatest treasures.

What is Tequila?

Tequila is a distilled spirit that can only be made from Blue Weber agave grown in five specific regions of Mexico: Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas. Blue Weber agave takes more than five years to mature and each agave plant is harvested only once.

Tequila is not just a spirit – it’s also a place. The town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico, is where this iconic spirit was born. The tequila industry as people know it began

in 1758 when Jose Antonio de Cuervo was granted land in the region. By 1812, his family established La Rojeña, which remains the oldest tequila distillery in the world. Cuervo was the first to export tequila to the United States, setting the stage for tequila’s global expansion. Today, La Rojeña crafts many tequilas, including Cuervo Tradicional, Reserva de la Familia by Jose Cuervo and Maestro Dobel Tequila, following time-honored methods.

TEQUILA IS A DISTILLED SPIRIT THAT CAN ONLY BE MADE FROM BLUE WEBER AGAVE GROWN IN FIVE SPECIFIC REGIONS OF MEXICO:

JALISCO, GUANAJUATO, MICHOACÁN, NAYARIT AND TAMAULIPAS. BLUE WEBER AGAVE TAKES MORE THAN FIVE YEARS TO MATURE AND EACH AGAVE PLANT IS HARVESTED ONLY ONCE.

The Art of Tequila Production

The tequila-making process begins with cooking the inner portion of the agave, the piña, to convert the plant’s natural starches into fermentable sugars. After cooking, the juices from the piñas are extracted and separated from the agave fibers. These juices are then fermented using various yeast strains to convert the agave sugars to alcohol before the liquid is distilled.

The art of tequila production involves striking a balance between traditional methods and modern techniques to achieve consistency and quality. This process showcases the natural complexity and character of the Blue Weber agave plant, as well as the unique craftsmanship that goes into every bottle.

Favorite 100% Agave Blanco Tequilas

When searching for your next favorite tequila, consider one of these award-winning 100% agave options crafted with just three simple ingredients. Each tequila has been Mexican-family owned for 11 generations, uses estate-grown agave, recycles 100% of its agave fibers and treats 100% of the water used in the tequila-making process. To learn more about tequila production, visit TequilaFacts.org.

The Tequila That Invented Tequila

The original tequila created more than 230 years ago by the oldest tequila company and first agave farmers, Cuervo Tradicional Blanco follows the same family recipe that put tequila on the map. This award-winning 100% Blue Weber agave tequila offers herbaceous citrus notes balanced by spicy, sweet fruit and a clean finish. Cuervo is a protector of the industry, environment and Mexican communities at the heart of tequila.

How It’s Made:

The agaves are aged at least 5 1/2 years before they’re cooked in traditional masonry brick ovens at La Rojeña for 36-40 hours. They’re then processed through roller mills to extract the juices.

The Best Taste in Tequila and in Life

Taking its name from the year tequila began gaining recognition beyond its humble origins in Jalisco, Mexico, 1800 Blanco Tequila features a floral, fruity aroma with hints of spice and black peppercorn with a balanced sweet prune and roasted pepper flavor, making it the perfect tequila to enjoy neat, on the rocks or incorporated in your favorite cocktail.

How It’s Made: Agave hearts are hand-harvested at peak maturity before the tequila is cooked in traditional masonry brick ovens for more than 36 hours, then double-distilled in copper pot stills. The tequila is a special selection of white tequilas blended for added complexity and flavor.

The Organic Crown Jewel of the Cuervo Family

Reserva de la Familia Organic Platino by Jose Cuervo is part of a collection of small-batch artisanal tequilas, 100% organically certified and handcrafted with meticulous care. This bright, unaged tequila features a unique, sweet and spicy palate with notes of melon, honey and hay, culminating in a clean finish highlighted by warm cinnamon spice. As a 100% certified organic product, it is one of the finest, most sustainable ultra-premium tequilas on the market.

How It’s Made: This tequila is crafted following the ‘Esencia de Agave’ process – a proprietary process created by Cuervo and known only by the distillers. This method allows the agave notes to retain their original character and shine through in the aroma and flavor of the finished product.

Mexico’s No. 1 Tequila

An award-winning, 100% Blue Weber agave tequila, Gran Centenario Plata is the favorite tequila of Mexico. Originated in 1857 by the first Master Distiller of tequila, this blanco presents vibrant fruit characteristics of pear, lime and citrus, complemented by subtle black pepper undertones.

How It’s Made: This blanco tequila is unique because it is matured in American Oak pipónes for 4-6 weeks, contributing to its distinctive straw color. The surface contact ratio of the pipónes is smaller than a barrel, which allows for less exposure to the wood, creating a nuanced flavor profile when compared to other blancos.

An Uncommonly Smooth Tequila for Any Occasion

A beloved tequila in Mexico, Maestro Dobel Blanco is crafted from single estate agaves that are slow-cooked in masonry ovens. Distilled twice, the resulting liquid is sweet, featuring caramel, honey, maple, walnut and vanilla tones alongside an indescribable softness and smooth finish.

How It’s Made: The agaves are harvested before the rainy season to create a greater concentration of carbohydrates, adding depth of flavor and producing a smooth, complex blanco tequila.

CHAMPAGNE SWAPS WORTH TOASTING 7 SPARKLING SUBSTITUTES:

CHAMPAGNE

HAS LONG BEEN THE ESSENTIAL TOAST OF HOLIDAYS AND OTHER SPECIAL OCCASIONS, BUT THE LANDSCAPE OF SPARKLING WINE IS EVOLVING. TODAY’S BREED OF BUBBLES OFFERS AN EXCITING RANGE OF CHOICES FROM NEARLY EVERY CORNER OF THE WINE-PRODUCING WORLD.

Regions across the globe are proving they can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world-famous fizz, offering exciting alternatives for wine lovers ready to expand their horizons. And, as people’s tastes shift, so do their preferences for flavor profiles, sweetness levels and production methods, there are more new styles to discover as alternatives to Champagne.

“Champagne is often enjoyed for its multi-layered aromas of fruit and brioche, finishing with a searing and elegant acidity,” notes Peter Douglas, DipWSET, a vinicultural expert with the “VinoVoss” AI Sommelier smartphone app and web-based semantic wine search and recommendation system perfecting wine discovery. “Yet, not all sparkling wines meet these

lofty criteria, and some remarkable options exist that may surprise your palate and your wallet.”

Below, Douglas outlines 7 Champagne swaps that are sure to tantalize your tastebuds.

Corpinnat and Cava

It’s rare to see Cava and its innovative offshoot, Corpinnat, mentioned together, but these two Spanish sparkling wines share a commitment to quality. Corpinnat represents a collective of small, independent organic wineries that have opted out of the official Spanish quality hierarchy to craft sparkling wines that reflect their unique philosophies and practices.

What sets Corpinnat apart from Cava is its stringent requirement

that grapes must come from owned organic vineyards and be vinified on the winery’s premises. Each bottle must mature for a minimum of 18 months, surpassing Champagne’s minimum requirement by six months. Many producers opt for extended aging, with some wines maturing for 60 months or longer.

This extended bottle maturation allows the wines to evolve from fresh fruity aromas into complex nutty and bread-like flavors, enriching the overall tasting experience. In contrast, Cava, while often perceived as more industrial, can also produce exceptional wines. Major producers like Freixenet and Codorniu dominate the market, leaving smaller-scale artisans with limited exposure. Like Corpinnat, Cava is primarily based

on the indigenous grapes Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada, which deliver a delicate, fruity profile with a light body.

The German and Austrian Powerhouses

Cool climates are renowned for producing wines with vibrant acidity—the backbone of sparkling wine. This principle underpins the German and Austrian passion for their sparkling creation, known as Sekt.

In these countries, Riesling often takes center stage, although you may also encounter Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varietals that can rival high-end Champagnes. Germany and Austria pride themselves on their quality sparkling wines.

Austria has recently launched a new Charta, establishing a hierarchy for “Sekt Austria.” This pyramid includes “Grosse Reserve” (big reserve), “Reserve,” and the foundational “Sekt Austria” quality, with aging requirements ranging from a minimum of 6 months on the lees to at least 36 months for the highest tier. This commitment to quality has garnered increased interest from both tourists and consumers alike, prompting Austria to appoint Andreas Vitasek as their new sparkling wine ambassador.

When exploring German Sekt, focus on renowned regions like Mosel, Rheingau, and Rheinhessen. Notable producers include Kallfelz, Barth,

and Raumland. In Austria, look for high-end offerings from Bründlmayer, Loimer, and Domäne Wachau.

Crémant de Bourgogne

If you prefer to stay in France, consider heading south to Bourgogne. The region primarily produces sparkling wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with Aligoté providing a refreshing exception. Crémant de Bourgogne offers a lighter, fruitdriven experience, illustrating a frothy texture that dances on the palate—an excellent alternative to its more famous cousin.

Cartizze: Prosecco’s Crown Jewel

In the northern Italian region of Veneto, the hill of Cartizze stands as Prosecco’s most revered site. Officially classified in 1969, its reputation as an exceptional origin stretches back more than two centuries.

Rising to 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level, Cartizze encompasses just 108 hectares (280 acres). With land prices exceeding 1 million Euros per hectare, it rivals the world’s most expensive vineyard sites, including those in Burgundy. Ownership rarely changes hands, with plots typically passed down through families, underscoring the value placed on this unique terroir.

The slopes of Cartizze are so steep that vineyard work must be done entirely by hand. In some

areas, workers use sledges to transport grapes and tools, their efforts evoking comparisons to mountaineering.

This challenging terroir, combined with the elevation and a predominance of old vines, produces Prosecco of remarkable intensity and character. Most wines from Cartizze are crafted in a ‘dry’ style, leaving a touch of residual sugar. This subtle sweetness enhances the vibrant fruitiness, while the crisp acidity keeps the wine beautifully balanced. The result is a Prosecco of elegance and finesse, ideal for those looking to celebrate with something truly special.

Moscato d’Asti:

The Sweet Charm of Piedmont

In the heart of Piedmont, a region famed for Nebbiolo’s brooding

intensity and wines like Barolo and Barbaresco, Moscato d’Asti offers a gentler, more unassuming charm. Made from the highly aromatic Muscat grape, this sparkling sweet wine is often overlooked in favor of its more prestigious neighbors but has a unique role in the region’s vinous identity.

The defining features of Moscato d’Asti are its fragrant sweetness, low alcohol, and gentle spritz. This combination allows producers to fully explore the grape’s potential, highlighting its characteristic notes of orange blossom, ripe apricot, and honeyed peach. At just 5.5–7% ABV, it provides a light and refreshing contrast to the weightier wines often associated with Piedmont.

Its flexibility at the table is a key strength. Moscato d’Asti can elevate

desserts like white chocolate and candied fruits or pair beautifully with creamy and blue cheeses. For some, it even becomes the dessert, offering a delicately sweet conclusion to a meal without overwhelming the palate.

Cap Classique:

South Africa’s Sparkling Star

For those who find Italian fruitiness is too exuberant, South Africa’s Cap Classique offers an elegant alternative. Introduced as a defined style in 1971, this sparkling wine is crafted in the traditional method, involving a secondary fermentation in the bottle. While the classification is relatively modern, the South African tradition of producing sparkling wines dates back over 360 years, firmly rooted in the country’s winemaking history.

Cap Classique spends a minimum of 15 months on the lees, allowing delicate notes of brioche and hazelnut to develop. However, the hallmark of South African sparkling wine remains its bright, fruit-driven profile, often leaning into flavors of citrus, stone fruit, and even tropical notes, rather than the pronounced toastiness typical of Champagne.

Today, Cap Classique has earned its place among the world’s finest sparkling wines. Its ability to balance value and quality makes it an appealing choice for celebrations, offering a distinctive South African character without pretension. Whether as a centerpiece for an event or an unassuming companion to the moment, it stands ready to impress.

Tasmania: A Sparkling Island of Innovation

Tasmania, Australia’s southernmost state, lies around 150 miles (240 kilometers) south of the mainland, separated by the often-turbulent Bass Strait. Known for its pristine wilderness and cool climate, it is the nation’s most southerly and coolest wine region, home to a scattering of nearly 1,000 offshore islands. This remoteness has

shaped its identity as a haven for ecotourism and, increasingly, as a center for world-class sparkling wine.

The island’s wine industry is small but tightly focused, with producers working collaboratively and sustainably. Biosecurity is paramount, and tourists are often barred from entering vineyards to prevent soil-borne pests or diseases inadvertently carried on footwear. Inter-planting with native vegetation, allowing certain ‘weeds’ to flourish, and preserving wildlife corridors reflect Tasmania’s dedication to environmental harmony.

Tasmania’s cool climate is particularly suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the cornerstone varieties of its sparkling wines. These wines are defined by their vivid fruit intensity, bracing acidity, and, in many cases, the nuanced autolytic complexity of toast and brioche. The sparkling wines often rival the quality of Champagne, though with a distinctive freshness and clarity born of the island’s maritime influence and clean air.

Despite its small scale, Tasmanian sparkling wine is increasingly

Emerging Regions

Beyond the traditional producers, numerous up-and-coming regions are crafting outstanding sparkling wines. The United Kingdom, Argentina, and cooler areas of California are all making their mark in the sparkling wine scene, offering fresh and innovative options for consumers looking to diversify their celebratory toast.

“Champagne will long-remain a classic, of course, but it no longer holds an exclusive claim as the ‘must-have’ sparkling wine for holidays and other special occasions,” Douglas asserts. While this iconic bubbly is a favorite celebratory beverage for many, the world of wine offers a range of exciting alternatives that deserve due attention.”

I’ll toast to that. l

HOW EATING TOGETHER BENEFITS YOUR FAMILY

In the 2025 World Happiness Report, evidence shows that sharing meals has a substantial impact on an individual’s wellbeing. Those who regularly eat with others report higher life satisfaction and display higher levels of social support, positive reciprocity and less loneliness.

SHARING A MEAL OFFERS FAR MORE THAN A FULL STOMACH; THE BENEFITS OF EATING TOGETHER EXTEND WELL BEYOND THE DINNER TABLE.

Learn more about how sharing a meal can improve your family’s overall well-being with these insights from the experts at the FMI Foundation and their 2025 Family Meals Barometer survey, which delivers research, collaboration and education to address food safety, health,. and nutrition concerns.

Civil and Respectful Interactions

In a world full of distractions, it may come as no surprise the 2025 Family Meals Barometer survey found poor communication is a leading concern among parents, more worrisome than schoolwork or chores.

More than two-thirds of respondents expressed a belief that civility in America is worse today compared to ten years ago, but 74% said family meals are a great time to have and teach respectful interactions. Frequent family meals create a safe environment for families to discuss thornier societal issues.

Better Nutrition

Numerous studies have shown families who eat more meals together have healthier eating habits and better diets in general. Family meals at home typically make it easier to fill plates with food from each food group. What’s more, parents who prepare well-balanced meals and model healthy food choices allow children to mirror and adopt similar habits.

Improved Family Function

In the 2025 Family Meals Barometer survey, respondents cited having more time to spend together and family meals as the top two ways they feel more connected to family and loved ones. With busy school and extracurricular schedules, many families are hard-pressed to find quality time together without

distractions. Gathering around the dinner table is an opportunity to connect with one another and talk about what’s happening at work, school and with friends.

Better Grades at School

Numerous factors affect students’ academic performance but eating together as a family helps reinforce many of the variables thought to influence student success. More nutritious meals play a role in stronger cognitive function. Multiple researchers found that children who are part of families that eat together regularly tend to have a stronger vocabulary and higher grades.

Improved Mental Health

Another way family meals benefit students at school and beyond is stronger mental and emotional health. In several independent studies, researchers found a positive correlation between family meals and self-esteem, psychosocial outcomes, and other markers of mental health.

Learn how gathering around the dinner table supports your family’s nutritional, social, mental and emotional health at fmi.org/ family-meals-movement.

Make Dinner

Prep a Family Affair

The benefits of eating together as a family don’t have to wait until everyone is at the table. During dinner prep, parents and children have a chance to work elbow-toelbow and talk about their days. When children participate in preparing healthy food, they may be more interested in eating it. As a bonus, kids who take part in food preparation enjoy the benefits of building their own life skills.

DIY dishes that put kids in charge of what goes on their plates can be a fun way to bring the family together and make meal prep easy. You can customize salad kits with a selection of protein options, create your own personal pizzas or serve a bar-style dinner such as nachos, baked potatoes or tacos that let each family member choose their own toppings. SIMPLE RECIPE SWAPS FOR A HEALTHIER YOU

IF THE IDEA OF OVERHAULING YOUR FAMILY’S MENU STOPS YOU FROM MAKING HEALTHIER CHOICES IN THE KITCHEN, YOU MIGHT FIND RELIEF IN KNOWING SIMPLE SWAPS ARE ALL IT TAKES.

Instead of sweeping changes that require all new recipes, just changing an ingredient or two in your favorite dishes can put you on a path toward better nutrition.

You can boost the nutritional value of meals and support your heart health by making smart substitutions – like using whole grains, healthy oils and lower-sodium options – to reduce saturated fat, added sugars and sodium while adding beneficial nutrients like fiber, protein and healthy fats.

Another nutrition-conscious swap you can make easily is opting for fat-free or low-fat plain Greek yogurt in place of full-fat sour cream and other dairy products. A single serving typically provides 10 or more grams of protein and roughly 13% of the daily recommended value

POwER The of PREsENCE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAY SOUNDO

This September / October, we are honored to feature the work of London-based PHOTOGRAPHER

JAY SOUNDO, whose eye for detail and artistry transcends borders. Known for his ability to capture both the sophistication of high fashion and the individuality of his subjects, Jay brings a distinctly international flair to our pages. His editorial for InFluential Magazine is more than a showcase of seasonal style, it’s a celebration of presence, elegance, and the power of influence. Each image is a statement, inviting readers to SEE FASHION NOT ONLY AS ATTIRE, BUT AS ART, IDENTITY, AND IMPACT.

What if we stopped asking people what they want to be, and started asking what they’re willing to do?
William T. Jackson, ABA, B.Acy., MBA
“Everyone wants to be.” Fewer want

to become.

We live in a world that idolizes the noun. We chase titles — Leader. Creator. Philanthropist. Artist. CEO. Visionary. Author. We love how they look on a business card and how they sound in a room full of strangers. We showcase them in bios, string them into introductions, and wrap our identities around them like armor.

But here’s the truth that rarely gets the spotlight: you can’t truly be the noun until you first fall in love with the verb.

To be a leader, you must lead, even when the path is unclear. To be a writer, you must write, especially when the words don’t come easily. To be a healer, you must heal, when the wounds are messy and the outcomes uncertain. The noun is the highlight reel. The verb is the behind-the-scenes work, the repetitions, the devotion.

nWRITTEN BY WILLIAM T. JACKSON, ABA, B.ACY., MBA, 2018 FOLIO: 100 HONOREE, FORBESBLK MEMBER

IF

“The noun is the photograph. The verb is the film.”

I know this personally. Long before I was Publisher of this magazine, long before I had anything that resembled influence, I was simply a person showing up for the work. I stayed up late perfecting stories no one would read. I poured my energy into planning events that barely broke even. I built with consistency, not clout. The noun never arrived on its own. The verb did, quietly, insistently, every single day.

In today’s culture, it’s easy to get caught in the title trap. We live in a world where people call themselves entrepreneurs before they’ve made their first sale, influencers before they’ve created any influence, executives before they’ve led a single team.

But a title without the work is like a crown without a kingdom. You may wear it, but it carries no weight.

“A brand without the verb becomes a mask.”

True impact doesn’t come from claiming a role. It comes from embodying the responsibility that role demands. The best leaders I know still learn. The most successful creators still stumble. The most respected experts still ask questions. They never stop doing the verb, because they know the noun is only as strong as the action behind it.

Let me offer a real-world example, one that sticks with me.

YOU WANT TO

Fall in Love with the Verb

BE THE NOUN,

A friend of mine, Angela, left her corporate job to start a bakery. Her dream was to be known as a “baker,” a word that evoked warmth, creativity, and comfort. But that dream didn’t materialize the moment she leased her storefront or printed the title on a business card.

She became a baker the day she started waking up at 3:00 a.m. to proof dough by hand. She became a baker when she learned that a sourdough starter had a personality. She became a baker when she ruined an entire week’s worth of croissants and cried on the kitchen floor, then got up and did it again.

Today, her business is thriving. People travel across town for her lemon lavender scones and spiced maple

pecan loaves. But it wasn’t the noun that made her rise. It was her devotion to the verb.

What if we stopped asking people what they want to be, and started asking what they’re willing to do?

Let’s shift the spotlight from the outcome to the effort. Let’s give standing ovations to those showing up in silence, the student rewriting their resume for the fifth time, the caregiver sacrificing sleep to tend to a loved one, the creative submitting their work after a string of rejections.

“If you want to be the noun, love the verb so much that you forget the title ever mattered.”

Nouns impress. Verbs transform. And transformation always begins in the doing.

So, ask yourself: What is the verb behind the noun you crave?
William T. Jackson, ABA, B.Acy., MBA “ ”

The next time someone asks who you are, try answering with what you do.

I mentor. I build. I serve. I write. I give. I keep going.

“The noun is what they call you. The verb is what changes you.”

My own journey hasn’t been defined by titles. It has been shaped by habits. Early mornings. Long revisions. Countless iterations. I’ve failed forward, learned publicly, and kept going when the road was unclear. Every chapter of growth has pulled me back into the verb, the daily, deliberate act of becoming.

Even now, I’m not obsessed with adding more nouns to my name. I’m focused on deepening the verbs that brought me here.

So, ask yourself: What is the verb behind the noun you crave?

And then, pursue it with relentless devotion. Stay with it when it’s boring. Commit to it when no one’s cheering. Fall in love with it, not for the applause, but for the integrity it demands.

“Want to be a legend? Do legendary things.”

“Want to be an icon? Show up with iconic effort.” “Want to be a change-maker? Fall in love with changing things.”

Fall in love with the verb. Honor it. Live it. Let it stretch you. Because at the end of the day, the noun may open doors, but it’s the verb that builds legacy. l

5 WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR FOR THE FALL SEASON GUT HEALTH

Transitioning from the relaxed pace of summer to the structure of a new school and work schedule can take a toll - not just on your time but also on your digestive system, too. In fact, studies show that stress can affect health through its impact on gut bacteria.

To help you stay energized, focused and feeling your best this season, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner is sharing her go-to gut health tips. These simple, effective strategies will help keep your digestion on track so you can ease into autumn with confidence and comfort.

1 Boost Digestion Before Breakfast

Blatner suggests starting your morning with a warm glass of lemon water before eating anything. This easy habit helps rehydrate your body after a night’s rest and gently wakes up your digestive system. According to Cleveland Clinic, the natural acidity of lemon can help break down food in your stomach and set the tone for smoother digestion all day long.

AS FALL ROUTINES RAMP UP AND CALENDARS FILL, IT’S NATURAL TO FEEL A LITTLE OFF-KILTER.

2 Get Moving Early

Incorporating a little light movement to your morning routine can do wonders for your gut. Whether it’s a quick walk, a gentle yoga flow or a few minutes of stretching, getting your body moving can promote regularity. This small step not only supports gut health but also boosts energy levels throughout the day.

3 Take Time to Destress Daily

Chronic stress can affect your mood and therefore disrupt your gut microbiome. Set aside a few minutes each day to unwind with a calming ritual, like deep breathing, journaling or sipping a cup of herbal tea. These simple stress-reducing habits can help lower cortisol levels, which in turn supports a more balanced and resilient digestive system.

4 Be Consistent with Mealtime

Your digestive system thrives on routine. Another way to promote

regularity is by sticking to consistent mealtimes, even on the weekends. Eating at roughly the same times each day helps “train” your gut to expect and process food more efficiently, reducing uncomfortable symptoms like bloating and sluggishness.

5 Give Your Body Time to Digest

Blatner also advises that staying upright after meals is key to avoiding indigestion, especially if you’re prone to issues like acid reflux. Lying down too soon after having a meal can interfere with your body’s natural digestive flow. Try to allow for a few hours between your last meal and bedtime to support better digestion and sleep.

6 Make Smart, Balanced Meal Choices

What you eat plays a major role in how your gut feels. Blatner recommends focusing on balanced meals that are rich in protein, fiber and a variety of nutrients to keep energy levels stable and digestion running smoothly. Recipes like this Superfood Egg Sandwich from Eggland’s Best is packed with gut-friendly ingredients like Greek yogurt, spinach and seeds, and can be enjoyed at any time of day.

Eggland’s Best eggs contain more than double the Omega-3s

compared to ordinary eggs, which can be beneficial for reducing inflammation in the gut and promoting a balanced gut environment. Eggland’s Best eggs also contain six times more Vitamin D compared to ordinary eggs, which helps boost your body’s immunity and helps fight off harmful bacteria.

HELPING CHILDREN MANAGE BIG EMOTIONS

LITTLE CHILDREN EXPERIENCE BIG EMOTIONS.

When things don’t go as planned or they feel overstimulated or face new experiences, children may respond with anger and frustration, fueled by feelings of shame, embarrassment or even a sense of injustice.

Because young children often don’t have the language or regulation skills to handle these big feelings, they can result in tantrums, mood swings, rebellion and emotional outbursts, which may trigger feelings of embarrassment and exasperation for parents. Fear not; every parent has been there.

Dr. Lauren Loquasto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at The Goddard School, and Kelly Oriard and Callie Christensen, co-founders of Slumberkins and authors of All Feelings Welcome, share guidance to help parents effectively deal with these situations.

Managing Meltdowns

Parents are most effective when they stay calm, speak quietly and move slowly. Counterbalance your child’s extreme emotion and behavior with the opposite extreme. Take deep breaths and stay near your child while the emotion dissipates.

Scolding only heightens the emotion, so start with empathy, not discipline, and affirm the feelings. For example, “We all get angry sometimes,” or “It makes sense that you’re feeling this way.”

Help your child label feelings and seek to understand what caused the outburst. Try “sportscasting”, objectively narrating what you see. For example, “I see you taking deep breaths. I see your cheeks are puffed up and your

fists are clenched. I know your sister just took your toy and that might make you feel angry. Are you feeling angry?”

This technique can help your child associate physiological feelings with an emotional label. Once calm, work with your child to repair and reconnect. Share your coping techniques. For example, “I feel angry sometimes. When I get angry, I like to stomp my feet and turn up my music. Do you want to try this with me?”

Model this often, either when you’re upset or as a teaching moment by pretending to feel angry. Real-life examples help normalize feelings and teach emotion regulation skills.

If you acted in a way you regret, yelling, for instance, address it by apologizing and taking responsibility. This grounding can help you and your child move forward.

Taking Proactive Preventative Steps

While big emotions and corresponding behaviors are a natural part of early childhood, there are steps you can take to help mitigate future meltdowns.

Develop a routine and stick to it as much as possible. Children thrive with structure; the unexpected or unknown can lead to emotional dysregulation. That said, there will always be disruptions and transitions, some small (such as an out-of-town houseguest) and some large (like moving or welcoming a new sibling). Discuss these moments in advance to help your child anticipate and prepare for the change.

Certain situations, such as the grocery store or a public event, may be triggers for children. Avoiding these situations altogether won’t help them learn, so prepare them with social scripting. Tell a story about the situation, discuss what they’ll experience and how they might feel and label the emotions. This talk can reduce anxiety, build confidence and make the situation more manageable.

Additionally, it’s important to recognize a child’s emotional state can be intertwined with yours; if you’re overwhelmed, stressed or anxious, your child may pick up on that and experience some of those same feelings. Likewise, if you’re calm, your child is more likely to be, too.

Finding Helpful Resources

When children are not in a heightened emotional state, reading books about characters and big emotions can be helpful. Pause and ask them what they think the character is feeling and if they ever feel that way. Consider Hammerhead, Mad’s Not Bad and Felix and the Picnic.

5 SURPRISING WAYS PROTEIN GOES PLANT: TO POWER YOUR DAY WITH PLANTS

YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO VEGAN TO GET THE BENEFITS OF PLANT-BASED PROTEIN. HERE’S HOW TO SNEAK MORE INTO YOUR ROUTINE - WITHOUT OVERHAULING YOUR DIET.

Forget food fads and restrictive rules. Today’s wellness movement is all about adding the right things in - especially when it comes to protein. Whether you’re a weekday vegetarian, a smoothie lover, or just trying to incorporate more plant protein in your diet, one thing is clear: Plant-based nutrition is a staple, not a trend.

It might be surprising but data from researchers at Abbott and The Ohio State University found that more than 1 in 3 of adults over 50 years old are not getting the daily recommended amount of protein they need. Plant proteins are a great place to start.

Why the Plant-based Boom?

More than 70 million U.S. households now identify as flexitarian, meaning they’re cutting back on meat and dairy and increasing plant-based meals and foods. Their reasons? Health, sustainability and energy. Increasingly, people are turning to plant-based protein to help them feel strong, stay active and support long-term wellness. In fact, 96% of people buying plant-based drinks aren’t vegan or vegetarian.

1

Add it to Overnight Oats

Overnight oats are back and better than ever.

Mix rolled oats with an Ensure Plant-Based Protein shake, chia seeds and cinnamon. Let it sit overnight in the fridge for a revamped grab-andgo breakfast option.

One Ensure PlantBased Protein shake offers 20 grams of plant-based protein, 25 essential vitamins and minerals, and 5 grams of fiber.

5 Easy Ways to Add More Plant-based Protein to Your Day

2

Swap Croutons for Roasted Chickpeas

Top your salads with crunchy roasted chickpeas instead of croutons. They add texture, flavor and a solid dose of protein and fiber.

3

Turn Soup into a Superfood

Stir pureed white beans or lentils into soups and stews for a creamy texture and extra protein.

4 Make a Dense Bean Salad

Swap in beans like chickpeas, black beans and great Northern beans for leafy greens to make a hearty salad that’s packed with fiber and protein. The best part? Dense bean salads can marinate in dressing and soak up flavors, giving them a longer fridge life and making them perfect for meal prepping and enjoying as leftovers.

5

Use Quinoa as a Base for Bowls

Swap rice for quinoa in grain bowls. It’s a complete protein and pairs well with roasted veggies, beans and tahini dressing for a satisfying, balanced meal.

You don’t need to overhaul your diet to reap the benefits of plant-based eating. Small, smart swaps can help you feel stronger, more energized and more in control of your health - one bite (or sip) at a time. Visit Ensure.com to learn more about the importance of protein. (BPT) l

UNDERSTANDING SYSTEMIC

INFLAMMATION:

HOW IT AFFECTS YOUR BODY

AND WHAT YOU CAN DO

INFLAMMATION IS ONE OF THE BODY’S MOST MISUNDERSTOOD RESPONSES, AT ONCE PROTECTIVE AND, WHEN UNCHECKED, DEEPLY DESTRUCTIVE.

Most people think of it as a simple reaction to a cut or infection, but in truth, it can quietly wreak havoc throughout your system over years. Recognizing the difference between healthy, short-term inflammation and the chronic kind that lingers is key to reclaiming your health. Without awareness, this invisible enemy can chip away at your vitality, increasing the risk of serious illness before you even feel it. Let’s walk through what’s really happening, how it affects you, and what steps you can take to calm the fire inside.

What is Inflammation?

Your immune system is hardwired to respond to injury and infection

by flooding the affected area with white blood cells and chemicals that heal tissue and fight invaders. This response is called acute inflammation, and it’s essential to survival. But when the same

process stays switched on long after the threat is gone, it becomes chronic and harmful. Being able to distinguish acute and chronic inflammation helps you see why the very mechanism meant to protect you can turn into a hidden source of disease.

Systemic vs. Local Inflammation

Not all inflammation stays where it starts. Sometimes the immune response becomes systemic, spreading through your bloodstream and affecting multiple organs and tissues at once. This broader response is much harder to pin down and often goes unnoticed. Researchers have been mapping why inflammation spreads across organs and found that once immune signaling gets dysregulated, the whole body feels the strain, leaving you feeling tired, foggy, and vulnerable to further complications.

Alternative Approaches to Calm Inflammation

For those looking beyond diet and lifestyle, several alternative therapies show promise in helping the body find balance. Some people turn to acupuncture, which can stimulate the nervous system in ways that dampen overactive immune signals. Others

explore mindfulness-based stress reduction, using guided meditation and breathing techniques to quiet the mind and, by extension, inflammatory pathways. Adaptogens like ashwagandha have been shown to reduce inflammatory markers while improving resilience to stress. And more recently, cannabinoids have entered the conversation, with some individuals exploring premium THCA diamonds for their potential to ease discomfort and support overall equilibrium; if you’d like to learn more, try this resource.

The Health Risks of Chronic Inflammation

Left unchecked, chronic systemic inflammation is implicated in nearly every major illness of our time. Heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, even some cancers have all been traced back to long-term inflammatory damage. It’s the silent damage behind deadly diseases that makes it so important to address early. Think of

IN FLUENCE HEALTH & WELLNESS

of your body’s internal balance, silently shortening your lifespan.

Nutritional Powerhouses That Reduce Inflammation

One of the most effective ways to calm chronic inflammation starts with what’s on your plate. Certain nutrients, like omega-3 fatty acids, polyphenols, and vitamins C and E, actively blunt inflammatory pathways. Understanding which foods contain these powerful nutrients that ease inflammation can help you make better choices each day. Berries, leafy greens, fatty fish, and olive oil aren’t just trendy; they’re time-tested allies in your body’s fight for balance.

Habits That Keep Inflammation at Bay

Beyond diet, the way you live each day shapes your inflammatory state. Sleep deprivation, high stress, and sedentary routines all stoke the fire. Instead, focus on daily habits that calm

walking outdoors, prioritizing restorative sleep, and incorporating mindful breathing into your mornings and evenings. Over time, these practices reset your body’s response and reinforce resilience.

Morning Rituals That Set the Tone

How you start your day can set the tone for how your body handles stress and inflammation. Simple morning tweaks, from stretching to staying hydrated to mindful meal planning, prime your system for calmer responses throughout the day. Experts highlight a few easy start-your-day inflammation habits that don’t require overhauling your life but do make a noticeable difference when

moderating your immune system and regulating inflammation. Introducing healthy bacteria through fermented foods or targeted probiotics is a natural way to soothe chronic immune activation. Many people find that when they use probiotics to soothe inflammation, their digestion improves and they feel noticeably more balanced overall.

Inflammation doesn’t have to control your health story. By learning what it is, recognizing when it goes wrong, and taking deliberate steps to quiet it, you can steer your body toward healing and longevity. From the foods you eat to the way you move, every choice either fans the flames or helps extinguish them. Pay attention to the signals, honor your body’s need for calm, and commit to the small, daily changes that lead to lasting health. Your future self will thank you for keeping the fire in check. l

YOU’RE NOT ALONE UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS

HOT FLASHES MAY BE ONE OF THE BETTER-KNOWN INDICATORS OF MENOPAUSE, BUT WOMEN MAY EXPERIENCE A WIDE RANGE OF SYMPTOMS AS THEY ENTER THIS STAGE OF LIFE. HOWEVER, TREATMENT OPTIONS CAN EASE, IF NOT ALLEVIATE, MOST OF THESE EXPERIENCES.

Menopause signals the end of a woman’s reproductive years, beginning as early as their 30s for some women. This natural process results in the stop of menstruation with the shifting hormones also creating a list of physical and emotional symptoms.

Perimenopause, which commonly occurs in the mid-to-late-40s, lasts 4-8 years. This transitional stage is characterized by fluctuating ovarian activity, which can alter the frequency and duration of a woman’s period and disrupt estrogen production. Menopause is officially reached when the ovaries cease ovulation and a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual period.

Despite increasing conversations among peers, many women experience disruptive symptoms and have difficulty managing them, according to a Nielsen IQ Aging America Forecast. Additionally, 90% of women reported never having been taught about menopause in school, according to a study published in “Post Reproductive Health.”

Uncomfortable symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness and weight gain often begin during perimenopause and may continue through postmenopause – in some cases, for the rest of a woman’s life. The intensity and duration of these symptoms can vary from person to person.

With 45% of women in the U.S. currently experiencing some phase of menopause, per the Nielsen IQ Aging

America Forecast, K-Y, is on a mission to provide support and relief where it’s most needed and empower women to take control of their menopause journey at every stage – because if you know, you know.

Beat the Heat and Soothe Hot Flashes

Prevention is one of the most effective ways to manage hot flashes – those sudden waves of heat that often affect a woman’s chest, neck and face, sometimes accompanied by sweating and redness. Identifying and avoiding common triggers such as caffeine, alcohol or spicy foods can make a difference. Calming exercises, like slow, steady breathing, can help bring a hot flash under control as can a cold drink, cool shower or portable fan.

Deal with Dryness to Restore Moisture

Hormonal changes can cause vaginal dryness, often leading to discomfort. To alleviate this discomfort, try a non-prescription product designed to add moisture, such as K-Y Liquibeads. Uniquely formulated and hormone-free, the vaginal moisturizer is designed to provide long-lasting relief to discomfort, caused by menopause and everyday activities, for up to three days.

Master Moods Caused by Hormone Changes

Fluctuating hormones during menopause can impact your mood, leading to unexpected emotional highs and lows. While some doctors prescribe hormone treatment, such as birth control pills, to help regulate hormone swings, you can also manage mood issues by doing activities that bring joy and minimize stress. Mindful exercise, like yoga or tai chi, can help manage your shifting moods.

Ease Your Headaches to Restore Your Day

If you’re susceptible to migraines, it’s important to know menopause can exacerbate them or even be the trigger that causes migraines to start. Knowing what sets off your migraines may be your best line of defense. However, if you’re unable to relieve the discomfort through self-care measures, consult with your doctor to adjust your current treatment plan or create a new one.

Nurture Lost Desire and Reconnect with Intimacy

As your libido fades, you may need to make a more conscious effort to maintain an active sex life. While factors like poor sleep, stress and depression can lower your interest in intimacy, maintaining regular sexual activity can support overall health, including minimizing problems with dryness and improving your mood. If comfort is a concern, a product like K-Y Ultragel lubricant can help supplement your natural lubrication. The unique water-based formula is non-sticky and non-greasy, so the natural feeling of enhanced intimacy is all you and your partner experience.

Quiet the Heat to Sleep in Comfort

Night sweats – hot flashes that happen at night – can be managed by wearing cool, cotton pajamas and using layers of covers you can

easily shed. You may find extra relief from sleeping with a fan or using cooling pillows and sheets. Keeping your room cool and dark can also help promote more comfortable, uninterrupted rest.

Clear Acne and Take Control with Confidence

Pimples aren’t just for teens; they often make a return appearance as you’re walking through this new transitional stage of life. However, you’re likely more confident and better equipped to care for your skin this time around. To help prevent flare-ups, avoid oily products like sunscreens and cosmetics. Stick with oil-free options designed to keep pores clear. If necessary, talk with a dermatologist about a program designed for your unique skin care needs.

FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR BACKYARD THIS FALL HERE’S

HOW!

JUST BECAUSE FALL IS HERE DOESN’T MEAN YOUR BACKYARD FUN HAS TO END!

Fall is the perfect season to breathe in crisp air, sip something warm under the stars, watch an outdoor movie, and make the most of your outdoor setup. With the right tools and a few seasonal upgrades, your backyard can stay the

place to be long after Labor Day. Here’s how.

Blow Away the Mess:

“Leaf” It to the Pros

Those golden leaves look lovely on trees, not so much on your lawn. A good leaf blower (especially a cordless or battery-powered model) like the

Greenworks 80V Cordless Leaf Blower can keep your yard tidy and pathways safe. But to take it up a level, look no further than the Mammotion Yuka robotic mower with sweeper kit. It doesn’t just trim your lawn, it also collects fallen leaves as it goes.

Bring the Heat: Stay Toasty on the Patio

With propane or electric patio heaters, you can keep the chill at bay and enjoy those al fresco dinners well into the season. Try the Dr. Infrared Heater Outdoor Patio Heater for electric convenience or the Hampton Bay 48,000 BTU Patio Heater for classic propane warmth.

Pool Days Aren’t Over Yet

If you’re one of the fortunate with a pool, you might be able to stretch swimming season into September, especially with a pool heater. A reliable robotic skimmer like the Bublue BuVortex V5 will spin around your pool, clearing it of fallen leaves, bugs and branches.

Cover Up: Furniture that Survives the Season

Fall weather can be unpredictable, but with water-resistant covers for patio chairs, tables and lounge sets, your stylish setup won’t suffer. Brands like Vailge and Duck Covers make highly rated all-weather options in multiple sizes and styles.

Backyard Movie Magic: Outdoor Projectors

Cooler nights are made for blankets, popcorn and movie marathons under the stars. Outdoor projectors turn backyards into a private cinema. One of the best is the Valerion Vision Master Pro 2, which delivers ultra-bright, cinematic 4K laser projection even in ambient light.

Fall Clean-Ups are Easier with the Right Tools

Pressure washers, trimmers and gutter vacs are great tools to prep your home for colder months.

like the WORX Universal Gutter Cleaning Kit, you’re ready for seasonal upkeep.

Don’t Let Mishaps and Malfunctions Ruin Your Fall Fun

Outdoor gear works hard all year, but colder weather puts added stress on everything from leaf blowers to lounge chairs. When something breaks, it can be expensive to replace. The good news? Many of these items can be protected. The surprise? Most Americans don’t know it. An Allstate Protection Plans survey found:

• Only 9% know patio tables can be covered

• Just 7% know about patio chairs and umbrellas

• Only 6% realize lounge chairs qualify

The Sun Joe SPX3000 Pressure Washer is a fan favorite. When paired with a gutter cleaner

And awareness is also low for leaf blowers (34%), robotic pool cleaners (28%), and patio heaters (22%)

Don’t wait for a breakdown. A protection plan helps keep backyard essentials working longer and saves you from surprise repair costs. Visit www. allstateprotectionplans. com for more fall outdoor living tips. By performing a few maintenance tasks and protecting your gear, you can stretch backyard season into sweater weather. HOW A NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE REVEALED THE SECRET TO LASTING HAPPINESS

WHAT IF HAPPINESS ISN’T ABOUT ACCUMULATING WEALTH, BUT ABOUT HOW YOU USE YOUR RESOURCES, TIME, MONEY AND EMOTIONAL ENERGY, TO CREATE JOY FOR YOURSELVES AND OTHERS?

Picture your next family gathering not filled with tension or superficial chatter, but genuine laughter and meaningful connections. Imagine seeing the joy on your loved ones’ faces when you share something special with them, not after you’re gone, but right now, creating memories that last.

Science confirms that generosity and gratitude significantly enhance personal happiness. A 2020 University of Chicago study found that people who intentionally give

to others experience deeper and longer-lasting joy compared to those who spend only on themselves.

Educational entrepreneur and author of The Happiness Experiment, Carl B. Barney is sharing practical, achievable steps to experiencing more happiness today:

Express Daily Gratitude:

Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. Notice how quickly your outlook shifts toward joy and positivity.

Create Memorable Experiences:

Plan meaningful, shared moments with loved ones rather than simply giving material gifts. The happiness derived from these shared experiences endures long after the event itself.

Give with Purpose:

Offer thoughtful gestures, advice or financial help in meaningful ways. Even small acts of generosity can transform relationships and significantly boost your happiness.

This approach to happiness isn’t just theory, it’s a proven pathway to a richer, more fulfilling life. After a neardeath experience in a plane crash profoundly shifted his worldview, Barney realized he wanted to witness the joy and impact of his generosity firsthand, rather than leaving his loved ones to benefit only after he was gone. Discover more about this transformative approach and start enhancing your happiness today at www. happinessexperiment.com.

Happiness can’t be bought, but it can be cultivated. As science and real-world experiences show, generosity and gratitude are fundamental pillars to long-lasting joy. (StatePoint) . l

8 KEY STEPS A HOME TO BUYING

BUYING A HOME MIGHT BE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL DECISION YOU EVER MAKE. BY UNDERSTANDING THESE EIGHT KEY STEPS IN THE PROCESS, YOU CAN MOVE FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE, CLARITY AND LONG-TERM SUCCESS: homeownership accessibility. For example, certain mortgage products allow you to put down as little as 3%. However, if you make a down payment of less than 20%, you may have to pay for private mortgage insurance until you reach 20% equity in your home. Knowing the possibilities for funding your down payment, beyond personal savings, is also helpful. These may include government assistance or gifts and loans from relatives. Use Freddie Mac’s Down Payment and PMI Calculators to see what’s possible.

1Understand what you can afford. Understanding your finances may not be as fun as house hunting, but it’s necessary for determining how much you can afford. Most lenders suggest spending no more than 30% of your monthly income (before taxes are taken out) on mortgage payments, including principal, interest, taxes and insurance. Your credit, current interest rates, and closing costs also impact on what you can afford, so take these factors into consideration. Freddie Mac’s Homebuying Budget Calculator is a useful resource during this step in the process.

2Explore down payment options. Today’s down payment options are expanding

3

Find your team. Having the right people by your side makes homebuying more enjoyable and less stressful. This team may include a housing counselor, real estate agent and lender. Who you select matters, so look for experienced, trusted professionals.

4

5Apply for a loan. Finding the right loan may make a big difference in your monthly payments and overall loan cost. Shop around and check out Freddie Mac’s Loan Comparison Calculator to determine which loan is best for your housing goals. Then, work with your lender to apply for and complete the application process. The process takes roughly 45 days and will include providing proof of employment, banking statements and other documentation.

6Make your offer. Through this phase, you’ll work closely with your real estate agent who will help

Find the right home. To find the right home, assess the property based on factors like its proximity to certain school districts, public transportation and your job. Then consider what type of home you want to live in. From singlefamily homes to condominiums, each has its advantages and disadvantages, and the right one for you will depend on your finances, lifestyle and stage of life. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the possibilities, so consider creating a wish list to narrow down your choices. Include your must-haves and deal breakers and reflect on how your needs may evolve.

determine a fair offer price while making sure you stay within range of what you can afford. They’ll also handle all contract negotiations with the seller’s agent.

7

Get an inspection and appraisal. Once your offer is final, your lender will order an appraisal. This is a necessary step in securing financing and protects you and the bank by ensuring the home’s value matches the agreed upon sale price. Companies like Freddie Mac may offer appraisal waivers in certain instances, so be sure to ask your lender if one is possible. For peace of mind, you may also wish to pay for a home inspection. If the inspector

finds issues, you can work with the seller to determine if they need to pay for repairs. Or, if you have a home inspection contingency, you could renegotiate the sales price, require the seller make repairs or back out.

8

Close on your home. Closing, also called settlement, is a meeting where you sign final documents, pay closing costs, and ownership is officially transferred to you. To prepare, secure your closing funds. Freddie Mac’s Closing Costs Calculator can help you estimate how much you’ll pay at settlement. You should also do a formal walkthrough of the property to check that it’s in the agreed upon condition and read

all the closing documents — don’t be afraid to ask your attorney or closing agent questions.

With educational resources like My Home by Freddie Mac, you can make informed, empowered decisions every step of the way. In fact, 7 out of 10 My Home users feel better prepared to buy a home. Visit https://myhome.freddiemac. com/buying to access these tools and resources.

Preparation is key to successful homeownership. Know the phases of the homebuying process, so you can begin your housing search, educated and informed. (StatePoint). l

HOW TO PREPARE FOR CLOSING COSTS FOR A SMOOTH HOME BUYING EXPERIENCE

These settlement fees are among the last expenses you pay before officially taking ownership of your new home. Here’s what to know:

What are closing costs? Closing costs are fees charged by your lender, real estate agent and other third parties involved in the homebuying transaction. They include various charges related to property expenses, the mortgage application process and other paperwork. Closing costs include a combination of one-time fees, which may include the loan origination fee, appraisal fee, and initial installments of recurring costs, such as your homeowners insurance and escrow payment.

Why do closing costs matter?

Although closing costs can vary based on the location, size and cost of the property you’re buying, they are important to budget for. Typically amounting to 2% to 5% of the total loan amount, these fees are due at closing, and can add up to thousands of dollars.

BUYING A HOME? DON’T FORGET TO ACCOUNT FOR CLOSING COSTS.

Is it possible to save on closing costs? While these fees may feel like they are set in stone, there are actually key ways you can save on closing costs:

• Research multiple lenders. Comparison shopping can help ensure you are getting the best interest rate and terms available.

Freddie Mac’s latest research shows you may be able to save up to $1,200 annually by applying to loans from multiple lenders. However, when you’re reviewing loan estimates, you should also pay close attention to the fee structures and any other items that you will need to pay on closing day.

• Negotiate fees. As part of choosing your lender, you should approach them about negotiating the fees included in your loan estimate, such as origination fees and processing fees. In many cases, financing charges are open for discussion and you may be able to get your lender to reduce or waive certain fees.

• Shop around for closing services. In addition to fees from your lender, you should expect to pay for additional closing services, possibly including title insurance, home inspections and appraisals. Even though your homebuying team may have a set of professionals they prefer to work with for these services, you can shop around for more

cost-effective options to help lower your closing costs.

• Take advantage of financial aid programs. There are many programs designed to help homebuyers cover down payments and closing costs, especially if you are a first-time homebuyer. Talk to your homebuying team to determine if you qualify for any financial assistance.

• Request seller concessions. When it comes time to negotiate your offer with the seller, you may be able to ask them for some relief on closing costs. For example, the seller may agree to cover some or all of the closing costs as an incentive to get the deal done. However, this is more likely to happen in a buyer’s market.

How can I prepare now? Access resources that can help you plan ahead for closing day, like the Closing Cost Calculator available through My Home by Freddie Mac, a guide to homebuying and homeownership that offers free online tools. Having an accurate estimate of your closing costs can help you have a smooth closing day. The right tools and knowledge can simplify homebuying and make it more affordable than you might expect. By understanding what fees are included in your closing costs and how to negotiate or reduce these costs, you can feel more empowered and in control of your purchase. (StatePoint) l

3 INTERIOR DESIGN DISCOVER THE TOP TRENDS RIGHT NOW

Moen, North America’s leading consumer faucet brand, has identified the top three trends as: creative expression, personal wellbeing and biophilic design. Based on her visits to trade shows like Paris Maison et Objet and Milan Salone del Mobile; research from Moen’s internal consumer market insights team; and observations from fashion, interior design and pop culture, Moen’s senior creative style manager and trend forecaster, Danielle DeBoe Harper, uncovers how these trends reflect the cultural, social and technological shifts happening today.

Creative Expression

As people continue seeking design choices that align with their distinctive personalities, the trend of creative expression emphasizes customization, transformation and versatility. It’s built on empowering consumers to select fixtures, paint colors, furniture and décor accents that authentically reflect their own inspired style and individuality.

AS THE THEME OF “HOME HOLISTIC WELLNESS” HAS EXPANDED OVER THE LAST YEAR, DISTINCT TRENDS ARE LEADING THE DIRECTION OF INTERIOR DESIGN.

“Homeowners and designers can foster a greater sense of personal identity and belonging through imaginative and expressive design,” says DeBoe Harper. “Elements of this design direction include statement details like bold colors, mixed metals and dramatic proportions; era-mixing for a dynamic maximalist feel; surrealist-inspired pieces that challenge conventional boundaries; and rugs, furniture and other accents that reflect high levels of craftsmanship to bring a feeling of authenticity to a space.”

Available in an array of customization options, the Moen Cambium bathroom suite features a unique blend of raw elements and soft modern design that creates a bold and unforgettable

look ideally suited for this trend. The suite highlights a captivating combination of machine textures, fluted patterns, and a new mixed polished/brushed nickel finish that all work together to enhance the bathroom aesthetic.

Personal Wellbeing

The trend of personal wellbeing reflects the growing societal emphasis on mental and physical health, with design approaches that prioritize comfort and rejuvenation.

“Your home is a sanctuary – a place of peace and relaxation,” says DeBoe Harper. “Personal wellbeing, as a design trend, embodies décor and style elements that embrace coming home to that sense of comfort and mental tranquility. This can be achieved through soft color palettes; opting for literal comfort pieces, such as oversized sofas and chairs paired with shag rugs; or embracing joyful design through playful, brightly colored aesthetic choices.”

Some also find comfort in nostalgia, pulling design inspiration from everything from old English country houses to Art Deco and even the 1970s; while others ensure wellbeing through thoughtful fixture and appliance choices. One example is installation of a robust water filtration solution like Moen’s Whole Home Water Filtration systems. The whole home systems help remove chemicals and contaminants from every drop of water in the home to support a healthier lifestyle.

Biophilic Design

Humans have an innate desire to connect with the outdoors.

The biophilic design trend welcomes the wish to create healthier, more sustainable and more harmonious living and working environments that bring people and nature together.

“Biophilic design goes beyond incorporating plants into your space,” says DeBoe Harper. “Invoking the sky, desert and sea in furniture, lighting, rugs and even curtain choices can elevate the sense of being in the natural world within your own four walls. We see this trend through design choices like cloud motifs or florals, applications of geological shapes and textures, and creating movement through splashes of water.”

Sustainability is a large part of this trend as well. Investing in highquality pieces crafted from recycled or reclaimed materials, responsibly sourced wood, or rapidly renewable resources like bamboo helps create beautiful, durable and functional spaces that not only enhance daily life, but also actively support conservation efforts and lessen your ecological footprint.
