I met Rachel Grubbs DesRoches when we both worked for Wild Oats in Deerfield Township. A few years later I received a call from her about selling her cookies at Findlay Market where I was, at the time, the outdoor and farmers markets manager. Rachel’s company, Grateful Grahams launched in April of 2010. She has always said that she is a gratitude company that makes and sells cookies. It has been about family and gratitude from the very beginning and, if you talk to Rachel or anyone who has worked with her or for her, you know she is the real deal. Since its inception, Grateful Grahams has been a family enterprise. Her mom helped; her husband sold the cookies at area farmers markets and Rachel managed production. Her success has come steadily. In 2013 and 2014 the cookies moved into Whole Foods stores. Grateful Grahams appeared on the shelves of Kroger in 2017. As her company began to expand Rachel decided to help others with big ideas start their own companies. The first Kitchen Incubator Collective opened in 2013. She says it was about community building. “Healthy people make healthy businesses and I wanted them to have a place to grow themselves and their ideas.” In 2016, the kitchen incubator moved to Newport and increased in size from 4,000 square feet to 10,000 square feet. I asked Rachel how it all came together. She smiled and said, “I just have always asked, “just believe in me and that is what I try to do. We started with three vendors who needed space and someone to believe in them.” Now the collective has over 100 vendors and over 25 have incubated into their own businesses. As Grateful Grahams turns 10, I asked her what she sees for the future. She said the brand has been undergoing a refresh. “We are looking at things and just assessing where we are. We are 10 in April. We beat the odds and I am so grateful. I am the healthiest and happiest I have ever been and I want to do more. I want to look at micro locations, partner with others… “ There is already so much more in her life of gratitude. She started Kitchen Convos a few years ago. It has morphed into the In Gratitude Podcasts on RachelDesroches.com. She hosts a Good People music festival each July. She is cooking up a Women’s Summit for 2020. I asked her what, if anything else she sees for herself. “I don’t know. I want to keep doing this. I want to teach gratitude. I want to make it real, tangible. I want people to know that anything is possible. It really really is possible.”

Well then again, anytime is great to visit Manhattan. I was so blessed to enjoy a long weekend getaway to the Big

Apple with my son Ari and his husband David. This was our first trip together. April can be rainy, but the warmer temperatures make it more comfortable than March. There is also very little humidity this time of the year, so the air is clear and crisp. Warmer weather makes outdoor activities much more inviting. And packing for me is super easy: Black! I recommend always throwing in a little black dress with some dressy boots for an easy dinner outfit. Be sure to also include closed toe shoes, that are comfortable for walking and water resistant, if possible. Throw in some leggings, sweaters and a jazzy trench coat and you are set! We stayed in an amazing AirBnB in Brooklyn. This was my first time not staying in Manhattan, but for the three of us, we opted to stay in a two bedroom brownstone with a kitchen and all the amenities of home for an affordable price. I hired a driver to pick us up at the airport and take us to our home away from

home. Alternatively, of course, you can use a taxi or an Uber. Personally, I always spring for a driver to and from the NYC airports. We got settled into our Brooklyn abode and decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. After a great outdoor lunch at a local cafe we went to the market and grabbed some bagels, cheese, smoked salmon, fruit and other groceries for breakfast and dinner that night. Right around the corner was a lovely little wine shop. We were set. Our first night in town we choose to simply relax and enjoy our space. David made a delicious dinner of chicken tagine and vegetables and we shared a great bottle of wine. I snuggled up that night in my comfy bed, did some reading and effortlessly feel asleep to the city noises. We spent the next three days doing a lot of walking and sightseeing. We figured out how to take the subway into Manhattan and had an eventful time doing so throughout the weekend. One of my favorite days included the Brooklyn Flea and lunch at Smorgasbord. The Brooklyn Flea was founded in 2009 and has grown into one of New York City’s top attractions. The Flea features hundreds of top vendors of furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques, as well as a tightly curated selection of jewelry, art and crafts by local artisans and designers. Starting the first weekend of April through October, the markets take place outdoors on Saturdays in Williamsburg. The Flea also operates Smorgasbord, a giant all-food market showcasing the best of Brooklyn’s artisanal food screen, with 100 local and regional vendors in a beautiful outdoor setting. Between the three of us, we sampled bites from Tori-San Japanese Fried Chicken, Brazilian street food made of fried dough and cheese and amazing Chinese dumplings.

I basically left all planning to the boys. I have been to NYC numerous times and was seriously excited to not make any plans, and instead simply enjoy our time together and go with their flow. It was fun using a number of transportation options this trip including the subway, ferry and, of course, walking! When I visit NYC alone I normally take a taxi everywhere so this was a great change of pace. Of course, the three of us have a real love for beauty and fashion. We spent our time in and out of boutiques, took in some art galleries, as well as a long morning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During one of the rainy afternoons, Ari and David decided to go return to Manhattan for shopping and I opted to stay in and enjoy sitting in the window sill watching life unfold in our lovely Brooklyn neighborhood. Ari and David also included a visit to the Metropolitan Opera for their performance of Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), composed by Richard Wagner. Ari has been a fan of opera since I took him to his first as a young boy, but he had never seen a Wagner live. They reserved box seats months ahead which gave them not only a wonderful view, but also a great company of locals to chat with between intermissions. Wagner is known for his long operas, so the boys had no choice but to wolf down smoked salmon sandwiches by the third act. It was my son’s birthday during our stay and I treated our party to an amazing dinner at Restaurant Daniel. Located in the former Mayfair Hotel on Park Avenue, Daniel is steeped in French culinary history. Seriously, this is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge! We each enjoyed the four-course prix fix with wine pairings. It was off the charts. My dear friend, Lauren, and a chef at Daniel’s, surprised us with birthday celebration desserts that included every option on their menu! Much gratitude!

After we came out of our food coma, we walked to the pier and took a ferry over to the city and spent the afternoon at the National Museum of the American Indian. It is an incredible museum that features Native American art and artifacts, some going back 12,000 years.

As we winded down our stay, we took some time to walk through Central Park and found the beauty of nature within a bustling city. One of my zen moments was found in the breathtaking view of the NYC skyline from our Brooklyn brownstone. That in itself

When the three of us decided to take this trip together,

reminds me that a Zen moment can be in the middle of nowhere - and smack dap in the middle of one of the busiest places on earth. What I do know for sure is that this trip gave me the opportunity to see the love shared between my son and David and the importance of family.

Lori Hoffman and Dr. Patrick Baker Dear Dr. Baker, I would like to thank you, Dr. Patrick Baker, for helping with not only with my ongoing back pain but for also offering a solution to my ten week battle with kidney stones. I first sought out Dr. Baker’s help because I threw out my back and could barely move. I was desperate to find relief from my pain as our family had tickets for the All-Star Game festivities. I needed to be on my feet and mobile for the entire week. The treatment I received for my back and shoulder offered relief faster than I expected and I was able to attend all of the events and I could not thank Dr. Baker and his staff enough. Then at the beginning of September I was rushed to the Emergency Room with severe pain in my left side. The emergency room doctor said I had a 5mm kidney stone and advised me to make an appointment with an urologist but I would have to wait two weeks. The ER supplied me with pain medication and Flow-Max medicines to assist with passing the stone. The stone did not pass in those two weeks, so the

doctor suggested that I give it two more weeks to try to flush it out and if it did not pass by then I would need two rather expensive surgeries.

the cost of the hospital stay, follow up visits and any further doctor visits. The CT scan at the ER alone was $3,186.00, so I can only imagine how much two surgeries would have cost.

After the second urologist appointment, I mentioned everything I was going through to Dr. Baker at my very next back therapy session. When we were discussing the options that were presented to me and the cost of the surgeries and Cat Scans. I wasn’t sure if he could offer any assistance but he was more than willing to listen when in reality “I was just hoping he could do something to help”.

I can’t thank Dr. Baker and his staff enough for all the help they have given me. My back has felt so much better, I am able to help landscape our yard, tear down our shed and haul away the wood with my children and husband.* Thank you, Lori Hoffman

Dr. Baker said there was a kidney stone supplement pill that might be able to help in lieu of the expensive alternatives. I figured what I had nothing to lose, as my trust in Dr. Baker was growing with every visit.

*Please note, there is no guarantee of specific results with our care and results may vary. Please contact us to discuss your specific condition.

I followed the directions with the supplement taking one week’s worth and went back to the doctor and to my surprise they could no longer find the kidney stone on the x-ray. I also had a follow-up visit and they still could not find the kidney stone. I was elated.

Theof the Wonderment Season by Cynthia, White Flower The wonderment of the winter season provides us opportunities to reflect, heal and save sacred space for all who need it. How we choose to use this precious time will determine the magnitude of this blessing. As the year comes to a close and a new one emerges, we reflect upon where we are. The cycle of life that we are experiencing, the Kali Yuga period, is the heaviest, based in materialism, giving the illusion that materialism is more important than love. As a result, greed has escalated to a violent level. Compassion from all of us is necessary, compassion for self and compassion for others. Compassionate reflection teaches us that all things happen for a reason. To understand the “why” is to begin to heal. There were and are many reasons and circumstances that we cannot afford to hold onto - as we don’t want to miss our true reason for living! We each have a very special gift for the world that is uniquely ours to give. Opening our hearts, forgiving ourselves and others - moves us into our loving place. Love opens the

8

doors to our gifts and to our blessings. We must position ourselves for love. Understanding that a new door is opening is to see what is there before us. Rumi says that “When we practice loving kindness and compassion, we are the first ones to profit.” Compassion recognizes our internal suffering and moves us to a place to alleviate it. To be compassionate with ourselves is to forgive ourselves. Rumi reminds us to “Be melting snow. Wash yourself of yourself.” By loving ourselves, we open to more love! Rumi continues: “Listen with ears of tolerance! See through the eyes of compassion. Speak with the language of love.” We are not separate. The blood that runs through our veins is The Source. The breath that we breathe is the breath of The Source. The people standing next to us are as much a part of The Source as we are. We are all related through the life force of The Source. As family, we cannot afford to keep hurting ourselves nor

one another. Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda teaches us to: “Practice loving those who do not love you. Feel for those who do not feel for you. Be generous to those who are generous only to themselves. If you heap hatred on your enemy, neither he nor you are able to perceive the inherent beauty of your soul.”

Rumi, Jalaludin: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/123621be-melting-snow-wash-yourself-of-yourself

Why is this important? We are in this lifetime because we chose to be an individualized expression of The Source. Yogi Yogananda describes our Spirit as “ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new omnipresent Joy,” and our Soul as the individualized reflection of “the ever-existing, ever-conscious, ever-new Joy.” The Soul resides within the body living the cycle of reincarnation. As humans, we live in one body and with one name only once. As we do not reincarnate again with the same form and identity, our Soul continues adding to her identity and karma as she reincarnates, but she is a witness. We govern the path of our soul. As we choose to elevate our consciousness to resonate to the level of ascension, we reunite with The Source and ultimately take on higher assignments in the expression of God, helping not just the Earth but the Universe.

Yogananda, Paramahansa: http://yogananda.com.au/gurus/ yoganandaquotes03b2.html

What is your assignment here? To hold on to any misqualifications of life is to hold on to imperfection. Seek inspiration. I believe that we are here to choose the light – the path of the most high. We are here to hold the light, to become the light, to shine the light and as we ascend- to become the light. Our resonance creates. It holds our sacred space. We are creating ‘Heaven on Earth.’ We are adding positively to ourselves and to the lives of others. Now is our time. As the planet is moving from the Piscean to the Aquarian age, we are blessed with the opportunity to ascend. We are gifted with the free will to choose how we will spend our precious, beautiful lives. All challenges ultimately lead us back the Divine within us and our reason for living … which is to manifest the highest within ourselves. May we embrace and welcome the New Year with enthusiasm, joy, love, peace and compassion. Pause, Stop, Rest, Breathe by M.E. Hart, JD.

Edgar Cayce saw spiritual awakening as just a normal part of living. Maybe that’s why so many people are talking about highly sensitive experiences these days. But how can we understand and make sense of insights we receive from experiences of heightened awareness? And how can we even begin to explain them to others who haven’t had them? Recently, I was flipping through a book by Edgar Cayce’s son, Hugh Lynn Cayce, when I found an interesting story. Hugh Lynn was speaking to a group outdoors, beneath a huge, overarching tree, when he explained: “I said, ‘I’ve had a thing with trees,’ and I pointed at the tree—and [in that instant] I moved from my body into the tree. I’d never [before] had such an experience. Ruth Lenoir, who was there, said I just stood there with my hand out like I was paralyzed for several minutes, and then I shook myself and went on.” Did he talk to the tree? “I didn’t say anything to it at all. I was just a part of it and caught up and just dispersed in its energy pattern. It’s a very disturbing kind of feeling because you are scattered, blended, like you are getting beat up in a milkshake.” (Hugh Lynn Cayce: About My Father’s Business, A. Robert Stone, Pg. 171, A.R.E. Press) Has anything like that ever happened to you? I had a similar experience, many years ago, while meditating at the ocean, in Ocean City, Md. The boundaries between me, the ocean, the sand, and the sky dissolved. My body vibrated slightly and 10

there was a deep expansive calm. The experience wasn’t as much frightening as it was surprising and unexpected. One of the first things I learned to do when my sensitivity expands like that is to look for “here.” Where is “here”? The present moment, right now, as you read this, that is “here.” To better understand and accept my awakening sensitivity, it was important for me to pause, stop, and come back to the present moment. It’s a great tool for the awakening empath’s toolkit. Let’s call it the Pause, Stop, Rest, Breathe tool. It helps reduce stress and ground us when unexpected spiritual events happen. Because it’s so simple, so basic, we often forget to use it at the moment when it could help us the most. That’s why I recommend turning it into a mantra: Pause, Stop, Rest, Breathe; Pause, Stop, Rest, Breathe. Repeat as needed. If it helps, you can lightly focus your attention on the easy rise and fall of your chest as you breathe normally. There is now a whole field of study—called Mindfulness-Based Stress-Reduction—dedicated to helping people better manage what science often sees as a simple stress reaction. But is that the whole story? Is it just stress, or could it be awakening intuition? Edgar Cayce had to come to grips with the challenges that accompanied his awakening gifts throughout his life. Insights from his biographies can help us understand the physical, mental, and spiritual impacts it had on him. You can hear some of those stories at a Conscious Community talk I gave earlier this year titled: Enlightened by Example (available at YouTube. com/edgarcayce). I’m running into a lot of people who are having Dec / Jan 2020

highly sensitive experiences and would like to talk about them. But they are a little reluctant to say things like, “Going into a store I get scattered and blended, like I’m getting beaten up in a milkshake.” That’s why it can be helpful to go to a conference or other event and talk to people who share similar experiences. “Come and see.” For only those that are in need of the answering of something within will heed. Edgar Cayce reading 254-87 Whether you call yourself an intuitive, psychic, empath, or just a person with awakening sensitivities; when you find yourself having an

experience that triggers “a very disturbing kind of feeling,” as Hugh Lynn Cayce described it; you might want to remember this simple tool. Pause, Stop, Rest, Breathe. It’s one tool we can use for a lifetime.

The Colors of the Wind by Jill Mattson

The wind whistles, roars and purrs. It teases, soothes, or rips us with cold stabs to match its winter song. Poetic? Yes, but literally and subtly true. As the speed of the wind increases, its pitch rises. A diminishing breeze sings a corresponding lower tone. When the wind dances, its movement speeds up, creating musical glissandos, with its pitch gradually changing like the howling of a wolf. How much fun it is to listen to the melodious voice - of the wind. You hear the wind and feel it caressing your skin. It “plays” with you, as if it is keeping you company. Notice how the air makes you “feel”. We all experience music that stirs our feelings. Likewise, 12

listening to “wind choirs” strums your emotions, producing tiny nuances and subtle feelings. Your body has sensors in the skin, in which, you literally and subtly intake sound and yes, even the gentle purr of the wind. The wind is invasive. Energy from sound can transfer to many things, each with correlating frequencies. This happens all the time. Think to the emotive qualities of a movie track. The movie is lifeless without the sounds and music animating it, but its music orchestrates our feelings. This is due to resonance, a phenomenon in which a vibrating force (such as sound) drives something else (such as emotions) to increase its vibrations. Air-stream sounds affect your emotions via resonance. Dec / Jan 2020

Sounds and colors are related. The cycles per second of colored lights, taken down musical octaves, correlate to musical notes. Through resonance, the energy from a colored light causes its corresponding musical note to increase its vibrations. Native Americans Indians believe that the wind colors the sky. Literally it does. Colors correlate to emotions - as one may intuitively feel. Blue lights create a chilling feeling, while red ones emanate warmth. We even hear this in our language. Common examples include: “I was blue today”. “He is red with anger”. “She was green with envy”. Colors are closely linked to emotions. Imagine the colors of the wind! Some days a blue breeze helps us grieve; touching our sorrow to gently pull it out. When the hum of the wind is red, it is enlivening, fortifying and energizing! The green airstream bestows healthy well-being and stability. It assists in relieving anxiety! Can’t tell what color the wind is? Notice your feelings, as you experience the breeze – that tenderly exchanges energy with you. An element of nature that features sounds, colors and emotions is the wind. Its different sounds correlate to musical notes and colors. This “strikes chords” within you! Consider spending a day on a computer and recall how flat and dull it makes you feel. Unseen electronic energy waves subtly drain health. Contrast that with a walk in the woods or even just enjoying the friendly trees lining the street. Nature, and yes her melodious voice - the wind - sings us vitalizing melodies. Windmills harness the wind’s energy on a large level. On a smaller scale, the wind creates sounds, which you ingest. The wind’s gliding tones contain juicy little frequencies that your body loves. You don’t hear these tones in musical scales today. There can be countless frequencies in-between some of the smallest intervals that we hear in music. Our bodies need all these rarely-heard frequencies for balance and health! Our friend, the wind, softly sings these invigorating and healing mini-tones.

The wind has many musical tools that she uses, in addition to musical pitches. The weather affects tiny nuances of the “music of the wind”, as she holds moisture and smog. Moist-winds feel differently than dry-winds, creating characteristic sensations, regardless of the pitch. It’s like listening to the same song played by a trumpet versus a violin. Music created by a violin sounds different than the same music performed with a trumpet – due to the instrument’s harmonics. The moist and dry winds create different harmonics, too. The wind creates pitches with its speed, but each pitch has a “harmonic-after-ripple” of sound, depending on the degree of moisture. The speed of the wind can puff and slow down, creating free-form rhythms too. The wind creates pitches, harmonics and rhythms! She is quite the musician! The wind and me? We are chums – singing our song together like old friends. The wind sings to me. I sing back to the wind – she listens. The wind takes my song and spreads the harmonies so they intermingle with animals, plants and all kinds of things. Most wondrous of all, the wind colors my moods and outlooks, with splashes of rainbow energies, literally painting vitality into my life!

P(AaintPoem/Story the Day! of Hope, Magic,

Empowerment & Bridging Worlds) by Sarah Gallant

“This satisfies my urgent need for solitude”, Kaya thought to herself as she sat quietly on a tree stump deep in the forest. The scents of pine and honeysuckle hung delightfully heavy in the air. Treetops bowed to some invisible entity as the wind whistled past sounding notes she faintly recognized. Kaya watched and listened, mesmerized. So deep was the connection she felt to earth and heaven, both seemed to merge in iridescent hues, swirling spiraling designs that melded with the remnants of long-forgotten dreams. All motion ceased and a bridge stood before her with a sign pointing that read ‘To The Future’. Millions of bubbles rising from a stream below floated around the bridge, dancing on the breeze. Extending her arm with open hand, a delicately formed sphere came to rest on her palm. It seemed to breathe, then to vibrate, and bursting open, a tiny fairy appeared! “Who are you?” Kaya questioned her, surprised. “I am”, she replied, “Does it matter who? Isn’t the fact that I am enough for you?” “Well….um” Kaya stammered, at a loss for words. “Follow me!” said the Fairy. with dainty wings drumming the air. And so Kaya followed that captivating creature, so bold and yet so small; that tiny fantasy, or was she? (real or the makings of a broken mind or an overactive imagination?) across the bridge to the other side. What lie beyond the bridge, much to Kaya’s dismay, was a vast, vast space filled with unidentifiable shapeshifting forms in spectra grey; nothing at all like the glorious colors and designs that she had seen just ¼ mile behind.

14

“So this is it?”, Kaya thought. “Interesting, no doubt… but so drab, so vague, and certainly not what I had envisioned”. And that tiny little being who somehow knew, said as she handed Kaya a rainbow colors palette and paintbrush with crystal handle: “Paint the day, I have uncovered the Way, the rest is up to you!” She then quickly withdrew into a circle of vibrant light, scattering fairy dust before its radius diminished and disappeared from sight. Kaya was again aware of the tree stump, the honeysuckle, and the pine. “How long have I been sitting here?” she thought aloud, “It must be way past early afternoon”. Feeling something in her pocket, she reached inside, pulling out a paintbrush with a finely-faceted crystal handle. Kaya held it up in front of her, enchanted as the setting sun’s rays became refracted beams splayed into exquisite rainbow patterns at her feet. Giving thanks to Earth Mother and to the Heavens above, Kaya took a deep breath and looked toward the Setting Sun. And as she stood with bared feet upon Gaia she felt her own Heartbeat and that of Gaia’s Aligning as One. Breathing out, the Galactic Heartbeat of all Heartbeats reverberated through her being as the wind whispered “See with the eyes of your feet, hear the Silence within, Know in the chambers of your Heart”. She felt a magical inner alignment as she centered in this special moment – the Eternal Present Moment Now. The colors of the rainbow, formed from the light of her new awareness shining through the showers of her experience, renewed her trust in the process of life. Glorious colors true and perfect “in-the-moment” interwoven patterns and shapes began flowing effortlessly from that magical crystal handled brush she still held in her hand, glowing in

For truly she knew that each day is a new beginning and a gift to celebrate and to share. Standing firmly on the earth, in touch with body, mind, emotions, spirit and the one Heart that unites all, Kaya ceremonially lit 3 candles floating atop water in a faceted crystal bowl filled with multicolor gems and beautiful shells from the sea. As she blew deep notes from a queen conch shell, she could feel magic in the air and smell the Ocean in the distance. She bowed her head quietly in gratitude and meditation until the flames took their final fiery breath before fizzling into the clear pure water beneath. Feeling a stirring from deep within, Kaya laughed out loud and skipped away on the forest path where the scents of Pine and Honeysuckle still hung delightfully

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all. –Rev. How to Instill the Spirit of Giving

in a Commercial Consumerism World? by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE

You’re at the toy store, picking out a gift for your nephew. Your son is with you. You think this would be a great time to teach him about the spirit of giving, by having him help you pick out the toy.

Resist the trappings of “affluenza,” regardless of what you can afford or what you think your children want. It’s important for parents to set limits, not for monetary reasons but for ethical and developmental reasons.

All through the store you hear:

Select gifts based on children’s individual needs and interests. Don’t add junk to one child’s loot just to “even the score” or spend exactly the same amount of money on each.

“Look! I really want this. Can we get this for me?” “Can I get this? I saw a commercial for it!” “Hey, I want that! Why do we have to give it to my cousin?” You understand your child’s excitement about the impending holidays, but now are feeling stressed and frazzled, instead enjoying a fun time together, thinking about others. Given the commercial world we live in, it’s understandable how The Gimmees can so easily infect children and, as they whine and demand things from you, cause you to feel more like Scrooge than Santa. To tame the Gimmees and instill the spirit of giving in children during the December Holidays, try these ideas: When children point out something they want, suggest they add it to their wish list or remind them whom you are shopping for and ask, “What would he/she like?” Have children set priorities with their wish list. What are the top two or three gifts they definitely want? Help them decide with questions like, “How is this different from what you already have?” or “What could you do with this that would make you want to use it after the first day?” 18

Resist getting caught up in the latest toy craze. “Everybody has one” or “Johnny’s mom lets him . . .” is an excuse you’ve countered before. Consider who really wants the child to have this gift, you or the child? Your child may actually like a different toy even more! Children can feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of presents they gain. Too many gifts can devalue the more special gifts they received. As a rule of thumb, if the pile of gifts is taller than your child, you’re probably giving too much. Limit the number of gifts your children receive at once. Spread out the holiday cheer with several gift-opening gatherings. Have an “out with the old, in with the new” policy. Encourage your children to donate gently used toys and clothes to those less fortunate. If it’s possible for them to directly give the gift or see the child’s reaction, it will have a profound effect. Another lecture about “It’s better to give than to receive” can sound like an empty cliché to a child. Living this philosophy and involving children in the process can help instill a spirit of giving— which children can practice all year long. Perspective Shift by Cynthia M. Brown

So it is almost over, this last year of the second decade of the new millennium. It has been a hard year. I sit here waiting to see my oncologist for some suspect lymph nodes in my iliac region. My mother is recovering from a heart condition. My grandpa is facing heart valve replacement surgery at age 95. My sister’s husband was laid off at age 55. It has been a hard year. I just interviewed an old friend about her company turning 1o. She owns a gratitude company that make cookies. She believes anything is possible and that her mission in life is to make walking in gratitude real for everyone. I just received a text on Thanksgiving from my sister, about how in the feast of challenges, hurts, demands and uncertainties of the year, she has still found gratitude in life. She was pondering why the good times are fleeting and the bad times seem to drag on as we anticipate bad news or misfortune. She mused that since God has no time, if we cradle ourselves in gratitude for all things good and challenging, , time will no longer hold us prisoner of anticipation or regret. So here I am: facing an unknown illness but, I do not have a fever. The pain is a minor inconvenience. I am still able to work, to take care of my home and family. I am grateful for this, even while I am nervous and unsettled about the future. And, that is the other perspective change. The future is but a dream on an unborn horizon. All that I have is

this moment-this instant that my thoughts become print on this page; this one moment of strong rich coffee and the warmth of my dog at my feet as I type this. I look down at my dog and smile because one of the best things about a dog is that they truly live in the moment. They do not understand the concept of later or another time. They want to play, to love, to eat to sleep NOW, right now. I want that. I do not want to wait for my days off to really live. I do not want to be a weekend warrior or a vacation dreamer. I want to live everyday, now. I thought I had learned this lesson after cancer, after an endometrial tumor ruptured in my abdomen, after being hit by a car while on foot…. Maybe I am a slow learner but as the year ends and uncertainty looms, I know this: at least for today, I am living for the day, for the next great cup of coffee and for whatever else comes. I am going to try and stay present, reverent and be grateful to be here for the experience whatever it might be.

Seasons

by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” The Byrds (a 70’s pop group for you who are younger than some of us) wrote a song based on that Biblical quote. That song came to mind as I sat and really observed our animals the past few days. Like us, they too have a life based on “seasons” if you will. We have 2 dogs and 1 horse who are definitely in the winter season of their lives. The rest of them are in their autumn season. I too am likely in the late fall of my life season, and Terri is getting ready for her Halloween. The difference between humans and animals is that for most of our pets, they will move through their seasons more quickly than we do. I do think that animals in general are much more in tune with their life cycle, and can be much more realistic about death. Most remember that they are just going

20

Home when their spirit leaves their body. We humans tend to lose that memory of where our spirit comes from, so we tend to be more fearful of death, whether it is our own, a beloved human, or a pet in our lives. We want to freeze frame them just where they are in their life cycle so they never progress to the end of winter. The thing is, our pets pick up on our worry when we begin to see the signs of their aging. It causes them stress, because they look to us as their source of safety, security, and love. Animals can also feel frustrated or become depressed when they begin to age. I have had senior cats, dogs, and horses express worry when they can no longer perform what they perceive their job is with their human. For example, a dog who is losing their eyesight or hearing due to age can worry if their primary role in the family

Blind Spots by Wayne Holmes is to be the “watcher”. A horse who has been a teacher to young riding students can become very anxious when their legs become too unsteady to safely support a rider. A barn cat who is the mouse hunter often times will leave and wander off alone to die when they feel their are no longer useful, when they can no longer hunt. How can we become more aware and learn to relax and allow their winter time to feel safe and secure to them? How can we make sure that their winter is filled with joy and peace? We start by focusing how we are perceiving them. Begin to focus on what they CAN still do, and find a way to make that important to you. A horse that can no longer be ridden can become a great teacher for a young child just learning about horses. A dog who was the family watcher can take on the job of chief lap dog and anxiety reliever for their humans. Focus on that, see beyond what they can no longer do to what their value really is for you and the family. When they are no longer comfortable or happy, we must let them go in peace and joy. In the end, the real job they all have is to love us, to be the best companion they can be for us. That’s it. Our job is to focus on that aspect, and to keep them warm, safe, comfortable, and above all...loved exactly as they are. Happy Holidays to all!

I used to work for the United States Postal Service, and as part of our driver’s training we were taught about blind spots. Most drivers are aware of this problem, but what I didn’t realize was that an entire tractor-trailer truck could be hidden behind a blind spot if the conditions were right. They demonstrated this with a video, and sure enough, the driver would not have seen the “18-wheeler” if the postal driver had rolled through the intersection and not come to a complete stop. Blind spots occur in other areas, and some of the most destructive situations happen when we have religious blind spots. When we roll along, never questioning the validity of religious beliefs but only accepting what was handed down from generation to generation, we risk spiritual death. In fact, we can become so convinced that what we know is the truth that we will be incapable of seeing the approaching crash that could devastate our worlds. In the Post Office world, the secret to overcoming blind spots was to come to a full stop, look left, right, and left again before proceeding. In the area of religion and spirituality, a similar procedure might help us avoid religious blind spots. Stop to consider the things you’ve been taught. Look for approaching insights that might detour you, and look to your Higher Power for the go ahead sign, even if it means changing your route. T–hethe432Perfect Crystal Tuning Fork Key! by Jill Mattson Tuning forks can be powerful things when they are properly tuned to particular vibrational frequencies. I worked with special craftsmen to make a unique tuning fork to sing out at 432 Hertz. And most importantly, this tuning fork is molded from pure quartz crystal. We have one of the most powerful vibrational energies (432 Hz.) emanating from a wand of pure quartz crystal. Every molecule in the quartz is perfectly aligned and vibrating in singular harmony at 432 cycles per second. The pulses ring true and long bathing you in blessed vibrations. The crystal quartz is perfectly clear - with nothing to obstruct the ringing energies. This quartz crystal tuning fork, pitched at 432 hertz, massages the heart chakra with a warm and calming tone; it also opens intuitive development. Tuning forks are used to create a precise frequency – one with targeted benefits such as this 432 hertz instrument. Special tuning forks are used to open and massage chakras, lighten auras, adjust emotional states, relieve pain & stress, clear negative energy, induce relaxation, enhance home feng shui, improve yoga, deepen meditation, provide healing via sound, facilitate inner harmony and serve as a musical instrument. The 432 tone is not readily available... it cannot be heard on our pianos, as this frequency is in-between our smallest interval of musical notes. An instrument, such as a tuning fork, is required to hear this beneficial frequency. 432 hertz has a relaxing and deeply centering impact on the body. The 432 tuning fork creates natural harmonics to resonate with the mind and body, allowing for a deeper and more nourishing experience. Think to the song, Stairway to Heaven, which is written to include this frequency. The song stands apart from others and creates a deep calming experience. And there is no tuning fork - made of any material - more powerful than the Crystal Tuning Fork offered here! Meditating with 432 Hz music can be an extremely

22

powerful and effortless way to reach a deep cleansing experience within your consciousness. Using the 432 fork held above the head clears energy pathways, allowing finer and greater amounts of High Energy to enter the crown chakra. It is like “cleansing the information and energy coming into the body and distributing it throughout all energy fields of a person”. A deep healing occurs once the fork is struck and the base of it is placed on the heart chakra and slowly moved all the way up to the base of the throat. Crystal Harmonics There are many other reasons why the 432 fork is such an uplifting spiritual tool. Each musical instrument creates its own unique harmonics, a pattern of after sound-ripples that go on-and-on to influence our bodies and consciousness. The material that is producing the vibrations is key - metal instruments emphasize one pattern of harmonics, wood instruments another and crystal instruments yet another! In ancient China and Sumeria, archeologists unearthed instruments made of rare materials - quartz, precious metals such as gold and gem stones were found. Numerous channeling sessions report that the Ascended Hosts preferred above all else instruments made of crystals, gem stones and precious metals. They report that the harmonics of such materials advance our consciousness and evolution.

Into the Darkness

by Melanie Wiechel, MSW, LSW

Spring, summer, and fall are the seasons where we are busy with productivity and are often filled with sun and warmth. During these seasons it is easy to be distracted by the constant sowing and harvesting of our lives. Winter, however, the cold dampness and gray winter skies invite us to seek the warmth of our inner fires. To retreat into the deepest darkest corners of our inner self for introspection. Throughout the year we have been accumulating experiences, gathering our wisdom, our pain, our challenges, and our strengths. This momentum built up and around our inner garden creating the darkest, moistest, and richest soul soil that is just waiting for us to go within to explore and honor our experiences in solitude and silence. The past experiences begin to shed away and surrounds us as we to explore and acknowledge our actions, emotions, and bring into our awareness of the changes that we want to see in our world around us. When the awareness and actualization are accompanied by changing our actions and aligning our emotional wellbeing with gratitude, we can slowly release the once addictive behaviors of the past. Through this introspection we begin to choose the seeds that we want to plant for the next season of our lives. We begin to identify which experiences that no longer serve us and are best served as our soul’s nourishment. This soil is the wisdom that we base the foundation of our growth upon as we let go of the familiar, yet decaying, comforts of the past. Slowly we begin to turn the soil in our inner garden allowing the experiences to nourish our souls. The decaying soil is the only way to create richness that is needed to feed our new experiences. Push past the temporary fear and discomfort, make an active decision to have faith that the changes that you are implementing in your behaviors, the old will to begin to fall away fertilizing the depths of our mind, body, and spirit leaving space for the new ideas and adventures to sprout. Creating sacred

growth bringing us into alignment within our highest self, our relationships, and employment. We begin to slowly see the germination of the seeds that we have planted, witnessing the germination can foster hope with in us. Through hope we can begin to realize the gratitude for our life experiences and begin to slowly heal through the hardships and manifest our newfound reality. Dig deep and have faith that your hard work will carry you through and into alignment to your highest good. Your journey begins today with just a single choice or action. Low Magnesium Linked to Diabetes & High Blood Pressure by Dr. Joeseph Mercola • Normalizing blood pressure Magnesium1 is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions in your body,2,3 and deficiency can contribute to significant health problems. Two common pathologies associated with magnesium deficiency are Type 2 diabetes4,5 and heart disease. According to one scientific review,6 low magnesium may actually be the greatest predictor of heart disease, and other recent research7 published in Open Heart journal suggests even subclinical magnesium deficiency can compromise your cardiovascular health. As noted in a 2018 scientific review8,9 published in Open Heart journal, a “vast majority of people in modern societies are at risk for magnesium deficiency” due to “chronic diseases, medications, decreases in food crop magnesium contents, and the availability of refined and processed foods.” According to this review, most fail to meet the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for magnesium; 48% of Americans do not get sufficient magnesium from their diet. Among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, the rate of magnesium deficiency is 84%.10 Type 2 diabetics also tend to be more prone to magnesium deficiency, and magnesium depletion has been found in 75% of patients with poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes, the review states.11 Magnesium Protects Your Heart Health Low magnesium has been linked to a higher risk for high blood pressure,12 stroke13 and sudden cardiac death.14 According to the Open Heart study authors,15 “most people need an additional 300 mg of magnesium per day in order to lower their risk of developing numerous chronic diseases,” and this includes heart disease and diabetes. Magnesium supports healthy heart function and helps prevent heart disease by:16 • Combating inflammation, thereby helping prevent hardening of your arteries

26

• Improving blood flow by relaxing your arteries and preventing your blood from thickening, allowing it to flow more smoothly Magnesium Status Impacts Diabetes and Blood Pressure Magnesium also plays an important role in diabetes, and this is not nearly as recognized as it needs to be. Low magnesium levels have been linked to a higher risk of insulin resistance, a precursor to Type 2 diabetes,17 as it impairs your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, which is important for the prevention of Type 2 diabetes.18,19,20,21 In one study,22 prediabetics with the highest magnesium intake reduced their risk for blood sugar and metabolic problems by 71%, compared to those with the lowest intake. High levels of insulin in the blood, common with insulin resistance, also lead to further loss of magnesium.23 Most recently, a study24 published in October 2019 in the online issue of Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice again linked low magnesium levels with both diabetes and high blood pressure, both of which are risk factors for heart disease. As reported by the authors:25 “Across the quartiles of serum magnesium from high to low, the prevalence ratios for diabetes were 1.00, 1.35, 1.88, and 2.70, respectively. The presence of hypertension significantly increased the probability of diabetes along a wide range of low serum magnesium. A low intake of MRDP [magnesium related dietary pattern] was also positively associated with diabetes and high HbA1c.” Other Studies Linking Magnesium Status to Diabetes Risk An earlier meta-analysis,26 published in 2007, also found that magnesium intake was inversely associated with Type 2 diabetes incidence. This analysis included

seven cohort studies looking at magnesium from either food or diet and supplements combined. According to the authors: “All but one study found an inverse relation between magnesium intake and risk of Type 2 diabetes, and in four studies the association was statistically significant. The overall relative risk for a 100 mg day increase in magnesium intake was 0.85. Results were similar for intake of dietary magnesium and total magnesium. There was no evidence of publication bias.” Magnesium supplementation not only can lower your risk of Type 2 diabetes, but also has been shown to improve your condition if you already have full-blown diabetes. This was demonstrated in a 2018 study27 in the journal Nutrients. Type 2 diabetics who took 250 milligrams (mg) of magnesium per day for three months saw a significant improvement in insulin levels and HbA1C (hemoglobin A1c, which is a marker of long-term glucose control) compared to controls. As noted by the authors,28 “The results of this study matched previous studies that concluded that daily oral Mg supplementation substantially improved insulin sensitivity by 10% and reduced blood sugar by 37%.” Are You Deficient in Magnesium? The best way to ascertain your magnesium status is to do an RBC magnesium test, which measures the amount of magnesium in your red blood cells, along with tracking any signs and symptoms of magnesium deficiency, such as:29,30 • Seizures; muscle spasms, especially “charley horses” or spasms in your calf muscle that happen when you stretch your leg, and/or eye twitches • Numbness or tingling in your extremities • Insulin resistance • High blood pressure, heart arrhythmias and/or coronary spasms

The Trousseau sign31 — To check for this sign, a blood pressure cuff is inflated around your arm. The pressure should be greater than your systolic blood pressure and maintained for three minutes. By occluding the brachial artery in your arm, spasms in your hand and forearm muscles are induced. If you are magnesium deficient, the lack of blood flow will cause your wrist and metacarpophalangeal joint to flex and your fingers to adduct. A more exhaustive list can be found in Dr. Carolyn Dean’s blog post, “Gauging Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms,”32 which will give you a checklist to go through every few weeks. This will also help you gauge how much magnesium you need to resolve your deficiency symptoms. Why Most People Need More Magnesium One of the reasons why magnesium insufficiency or deficiency is so common, both among adults34 and teens,35 is in part due to the fact that most people don’t eat enough plant foods. Magnesium is actually part of the chlorophyll molecule responsible for the plant’s green color. If you frequently eat processed foods, your risk of deficiency is magnified. That said, even if you eat plenty of greens you might still need to take a supplement, as most foods are grown in mineral-depleted soils and are thus much lower in magnesium than they have been historically. Magnesium absorption is also dependent on having sufficient amounts of selenium, parathyroid hormone and vitamins B6 and D, and is hindered by excess ethanol, salt, coffee and phosphoric acid in soda. Sweating, stress, lack of sleep, excessive menstruation, certain drugs (especially diuretics and proton-pump inhibitors) also deplete your body of magnesium.36 For these reasons, most people probably need to take supplemental magnesium. Taking a magnesium supplement is particularly advisable if you:37 • Experience symptoms of insufficiency or deficiency38

• Increased number of headaches and/or migraines • Low energy, fatigue and/or loss of appetite

(Continued from pg. 27)

• Have high blood pressure • Engage in strenuous exercise on a regular basis — Research39 shows just six to 12 weeks of strenuous physical activity can result in magnesium deficiency, likely due to increased magnesium demand in your skeletal muscle • Are taking diuretics or medication for high blood pressure, especially thiazides, which have been shown to induce undetectable magnesium deficiency40 (while patients may have normal or even high serum magnesium, their bodies are actually depleted of magnesium) • Have had or are planning heart transplant or open heart surgery • Are at risk for or have had a heart attack, or if you experience ventricular arrhythmia • Have congestive heart failure • Are insulin resistant or diabetic (as this increases magnesium depletion) Eat More Magnesium-Rich Foods The recommended dietary allowance for magnesium is around 310 to 420 mg per day depending on your age and sex,41 but many experts believe you may need 600 to 900 mg per day.42 Personally, I believe many may benefit from amounts as high as 1 to 2 grams (1,000 to 2,000 mg) of elemental magnesium per day, as most of us have electromagnetic field exposures that simply cannot be mitigated, and the extra magnesium may help lower the damage from that exposure. If your veggie consumption is low to begin with, consider including more magnesium-rich vegetables in your daily diet. Dark-green leafy vegetables lead the pack when it comes to magnesium content, and juicing your greens is an excellent way to boost your intake. Other foods that are particularly rich in magnesium include natto, raw cacao nibs, unsweetened cocoa powder, avocados, pumpkin and sesame seeds, and herbs like chives and basil.43 One way to check your

daily magnesium intake from foods is to use a free online nutritional tracker such as Cronometer. Other Ways to Boost Your Magnesium Level If your magnesium intake from food is found lacking, it would certainly be wise to supplement, either orally or topically. For oral supplementation, my personal preference is magnesium threonate, as it appears to be the most efficient at penetrating cell membranes, including your mitochondria and bloodbrain barrier. As a general rule, I recommend starting out on a dose of 200 mg of oral magnesium citrate per day, gradually increasing your dose until you develop slightly loose stools. To use this method, you need to use magnesium citrate, as it’s known for having a laxative effect. Once you know your cutoff, you can switch to other forms if you like. Other effective ways to boost your magnesium level include: • Taking Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) baths, as the magnesium will effectively absorb through your skin. • Using a topical solution — I prepare a supersaturated solution of Epsom salt by dissolving 7 tablespoons of the salt into 6 ounces of water and heating it until all the salt has dissolved. I pour it into a dropper bottle and then apply it to my skin and rub fresh aloe leaves over it to dissolve it. This is an easy and inexpensive way to increase your magnesium and will allow you to get higher dosages into your body without having to deal with its laxative effects. Magnesium can be taken with or without food. If you’re also taking calcium, take them together. If you exercise regularly, consider taking your calcium and magnesium in a ratio of one part calcium to two parts magnesium with your pre-workout meal. While the ideal ratio of magnesium to calcium is thought to be 1-to-1, most people get far more calcium than magnesium from their diet; hence, your need for supplemental magnesium may be two to three times greater than calcium.
