Letter from the editor

Dear Readers,

It only takes a moment when an ordinary day can become an extraordinary day!

I met a Violinist one day on a street corner. I did not see him as I was passing by in my car, but I noticed a melody of beautiful music filling my ears. I looked around to see where the sound was coming from. I stopped and drove toward the music. In my amazement, there he was playing his violin as if no one was watching, the music was loud and filling the air and my heart with the most enchanting music I believe I have ever heard!

I felt as if I was transported to a different place in time. I edged closer in wonderment, it was then that I saw him joyfully dancing as he was playing. Near him was a sign, that he could not pay his rent and he needed help. After I read the sign, my young grandsons in the back of the car, asked if we could help him, and I replied, of course we can. We gave as much as we could to help and he gave us so much more in return. He played another song, it was not familiar but it was to my heart and soul. To my astonishment, his song began to release tremendous sorrow that I had been holding with what felt like the weight of the world on my shoulders. The tears fell like rain and the pain embedded so deep began to lift as I watched him and feeling blessed that he shared his incredible gift of music with us. We were mesmerized by the glory and beauty of his music. As we bid farewell, I drove away knowing I will never forget the music man and his violin. I am grateful for his gift of music that lifted our hearts and souls that day in just a small measure of time.

Treasure the moments that may only happen once in a lifetime! Life is indeed a journey through time and sometimes within, where healing begins. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

RV Road Trip – Part 3: The Magic of the Southwest – Sedona & Santa Fe

It had been an amazing trip thus far. We saw friends in Scottsdale. We enjoyed beach time in Malibu.

We had a beautiful time in Napa Valley. For much of it, we were even joined by my son, Ari, and my son-in-law, David. Such great memories were made.

After saying our goodbyes, we at last hit the road for Texas, albeit with a few more stops along the way. For our final leg of this adventure, we included an overnight in Palm Springs, with an additional two nights in both Sedona and Santa Fe. By now, Ray and I both felt like R.V. veterans.

Once we reached Palm Springs, we found our first stop, Happy Traveler. This quaint R.V. park sits at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains. After setting up camp we were ready for my friend, Rosemary, now a Palm Springs local, to join us. Unbeknownst to me, she even lived within walking distance to us. With champagne in hand, Rosemary swung by for a night of lively conversation.

4 Winter Wonderment 2023

The next morning it was time to make our way to Sedona, though not before we took in the sunrise, mountain view and a strong cup of coffee. I love Sedona and have spent a lot of time there. Ray, who is a retired geologist, had never been. But I knew he’d also fall in love with the red rock scenery. Thankfully, our drive to Sedona from Palm Springs was one of our easier jaunts at only five and a half hours.

Driving into Sedona is a spiritual experience that takes my breath away every time I drive in. It’s natural beauty of red rock formations will mesmerize your eyes. The area has become wellknown for spiritual wellness, in large part, because of its many energy vortexes. Located in a treeshaded park with a river nearby, Rancho Sedona R.V. Park quickly became home for two nights. It was also only a short walking distance to the heart of Sedona. We were sure to take a walking tour of our surroundings. The afternoon was then spent in Uptown Sedona, the city’s old town and most popular shopping district. There are many galleries, eclectic shops and fabulous restaurants to enjoy. We dined on shared plates of pork chili verde and southwest flautas at Oaxaca’s Mexican restaurant. It was an ideal spot for margaritas, the cool crisp air and views of those magnificent red rocks. After dinner, we sat outside under the Milky Way. Soft jazz filled the air, along with a feeling of gratitude to be surrounded like a cocoon by the red rocks.

I surprised Ray that next day with a two and a half hour pink jeep scenic tour. We now had our chance to venture into the mountains for views and hiking. Our guide was amazing sharing tremendous knowledge about Sedona. Of course, my geologist fiancé added in some fun facts and observations of his own. We experienced sights that left us breathless. Climbing further into the high elevation we discovered the wild backcountry. We got up close to the great sandstone formations and hiked Slick Rock. This is a remarkable way to learn about local geology, landscape, wildlife, and the just as colorful, legends.

Following our tour, we spent a lazy afternoon walking around Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village. It’s also conveniently located directly

across the road from the R.V. park. The Village is fashioned after a traditional Mexican village. Tlaquepaque, translating to “best everything,” has been a Sedona landmark since the 1970’s. Here travelers will find fine art paintings, eclectic bronze sculpture, ceramics and much more. The native turquoise jewelry and southwestern art are my favorites. Lunch consisted of a light Mandarin chicken salad and southwestern corn chowder at a little restaurant called The Secret Garden Cafe. It was a gorgeous afternoon, so we sat outside with our delicious food. We were happy to simply relax and peoplewatch.

We opted to stay in that night. Before leaving Napa days prior, we purchased a bottle of pinot noir from Domaine Carneros. We paired it with a tasty pizza delivered from Moon Dogs. The night consisted of more conversation, stargazing and a competitive game of Scrabble. What an easy way to spend our last night in glorious Red Rock country.

At the crack of dawn, we were up. Thankfully, it had been a long, restful sleep before once again getting the R.V. ready for travel. Our trip now took us to Santa Fe, about a six hour drive. We were excited to have an afternoon of play before needing to check into our hotel. I was equally excited for a break from the R.V., which included experiencing a real shower! Santa Fe is one of my absolute favorite places on Earth. I find it quintessentially magical. Together, Ray and I made a couple of trips there in the recent past and we both had our favorite sites. As planned, we arrived at the Santa Fe Plaza by midday. The afternoon was spent walking the clothing boutiques and art galleries. The galleries often feature the most incredible Native American paintings, pottery, textiles and jewelry. A live band in the center of town made the atmosphere especially lively. We were sure to sit down to rest and listen. We then had to return to knocking off places on our list, including a well-loved wine tasting room for vino and tapas.

What can I possibly say to describe the uniqueness of Ten Thousand Waves Spa? This traditional

Japanese hot springs resorts rests high in the mountains above historic Santa Fe. A visit here truly becomes a vacation within a vacation. We had now been traveling for fourteen days. I needed to end this experience with all the luxury of an exotic resort. Immediately, we felt as though we’d stepped into the Hokkaido mountains, with its traditional architecture and outdoor soaking tubs surrounded by fragrant pinon and juniper trees.

There are two communal tubs with sauna and cold plunge features. There are also four private tubs, along with ample services including salt scrubs, Thai and hot stone massage, as well as foot soaks. The grounds are beautiful and lined with glowing lanterns in the evening. We lodged in the High Moon Suite, a combination southwestern and Japanese design. We were thrilled to sit beside the fireplace on those two brisk October evenings. Included with our stay was complimentary outdoor bathing in the grand bath, a breakfast bento box in the morning and Buddha chocolates on our pillows each night. We happily took advantage of the private soaking tub and signature Japanese shiatsu massage. On the last night before returning to the long road heading home, we dined at the spa’s restaurant, Izanami. Known for upscale Japanese bar bites, Izanami features small plates, designed for sharing and an amazing sake menu. The food was outstanding. The sake tasting was a cool, new experience. We each ordered a tasting flight giving us an opportunity to sample a wide range of flavors. Some of our shareable dishes included a spicy cucumber and avocado salad, grilled miso bass, roasted Japanese mushrooms and shichimi fries. We finished off dinner with a matcha pan cotta for dessert and conversation about our ten hour drive home in the morning!

Ray and I were first time R.V. travelers, but we enjoyed our two weeks on the road. For us, having a break to both stay in an Airbnb in Napa and then later, two nights in Santa Fe proved to be a smart choice. We covered a lot of ground during our adventure and had so many new experiences. We had no regrets! Although we had flirted with one day buying our own, this trip did let us know

we are not exactly not cut out for the R.V. life. But perhaps we’ll rent one for a long vacation every now and again.

There were so many Zen moments throughout the trip, it’s hard to say which was most memorable. Being with family, spending time with friends, simply watching sunsets over the ocean and the Red Rocks, or wine tasting in Napa, just scratch the surface.

We made it back home to Texas safe and sound with such awesome memories and stories to share. But we both agreed that sleeping in our own bed without needing to drive for a few days may have truly been the perfect Zen moment!

As always, blessings and gratitude.

Past Blessings

A song by Garth Brooks titled “Unanswered Prayers” reminds us that sometimes we pray for things and the answer appears to be “No.” As time goes by and we see the way things could have been had our prayers been answered, we can smile and say with Garth, “I thank God, for unanswered prayers.”

Truth is, The Divine answers prayers, and sometimes we are grateful when The Divine says “No,” or “Not now,” or one of my personal favorites, “I’ve got a better idea.” If The Divine created us, then no one knows us better. Not only are our compulsive wants and desires known to The Divine, but also our deepest wants, needs, and highest ambitions.

One request we need to include in our prayers is this, “Divine Spirit, show me what I want — what I truly want — and grant that request.”

We can be assured that this is a safe prayer, because at the heart of all of God’s children — and for some it is buried way down deep — is the desire to love and be loved, to extend love to everyone we meet, and to be accepted for who and what we are without judgment. Divine Spirit; answer the deepest desires of our hearts — to be like You.

Gemstones & the Edgar Cayce Readings

The psychic readings of Edgar Cayce are filled with references to gemstones, crystals, and precious metals, often recommended for their vibratory nature. While many “stones” seem to share universal qualities, others have a more individual, almost personal nature. The readings suggest that they can be used for healing and strength, to raise ones vibration when connecting with the higher self, for stabilizing mental health, to increase psychic abilities. Working with stones may also have harmful results—from amplification of a negative personality trait to the destruction of a civilization.

According to the readings, each stone has a unique spirit, vibration and “fire” that has the power to “bring that which fires the imagination of those who are very selfish or it may bring peace to the wearer.” (3657-1) The reading goes on to explain that the vibration can be determined by how the stone was formed: “The pearl is a natural consequence of irritation and it will bring either peace or irritation to the wearer…”

Another important influence on the individual is the color, shade, and mineral composition of the stone: “Hence the colors that will influence the developing years… will be blue and yellow, or shades and tones of these particular

colors; with the opal and pearl being those minerals that will attract and influence the entity.” (314-1)

The combination of stones and placement on the body were also important. Not only for the individuals wearing them but also for their influence upon the people in contact with the wearer:

“Hence the opal…with the moonstone, should be…about the body or entity oft. Wear the fire opal as a locket about the neck… Not upon the hands nor upon the wrists, but about the neck.

“Wear…the pearl with moonstone…as rings or amulets or anklets; but never those upon the neck or in the ears rather upon the extremities; for they will make for the bringing out in the experiences of those the entity meets.” (1406-1)

The most frequently mentioned gemstone is lapis, including the forms lapis lazuli, lapis linguis, and lapis ligurius. Lapis is generally a deep-blue opaque stone, but it may have a green, violet, or even red tint, making recognition more challenging. Many early cultures, including Egyptian, Chinese, Tibetan, and Persian, have references to lapis lazuli. A number of artifacts from Ancient Egypt verify its use. The

8
Winter Wonderment 2023

material known as lapis lazuli today is a silicate of sodium and aluminum with only trace amounts of copper. Since the readings indicate that lapis, or lapis lazuli, was composed of copper, it is difficult to know if it is the same gemstone.

The readings identify lapis linguis as azurite, which can be used for “greater mental and spiritual development” (559-7) and “strength to the body” (691-1). It was recommended as an aid to meditation and a “helpful influence towards making… decisions in dealing with mental attributes.” (1058-1) Lapis ligurius, most likely malachite, is described as a green stone with “crystallization of copper” with a “protective influence” (1931-1) over the individual.

The pearl and ruby were the next most popular gemstones in the readings. The pearl was to be worn “close to the body; not as an ornament, but rather as that which gives strength to the body.” (3374-1)The pearl “should be worn upon the body, or against the flesh” for “its vibrations are healing, as well as creative…” (951-4) It could be used for “keeping the even temperament, yea the temper itself.” (2533-1)

The ruby was to be worn “on hand or body” to “develop greater abilities for concentration.” (531-3) The vibrations of a diamond and ruby together could keep “vibrations of the body in better attune with infinity and not with the purely mental or material things of life.” (5322-1) The inner influence of the ruby was “valor and the strength.” (1144-2)

In addition to wearing particular gems and gemstones, the Edgar Cayce readings often suggested that individuals wear different metals for their vibratory influence. Choosing which gemstone or metal to use is an important decision that can involve the body as well as the mind and spirit.

According to the readings, gemstones and metals work because our bodies are vibrational in nature. “Each element, each stone, each variation of stone, has its own atomic movement, held together by the units of energy that in the universe are concentrated in that particular activity.” (531-3)

For, the very elements of body through which spirit and mind manifest are atomic in their nature. Hence so are the elements of this stone indicated, that partakes of most of the elements that are to man of great influence or power, because of their representations in the body. (1931-1)

Metals such as gold and silver could be worn on the body as well as absorbed by the body by using a device such as a radial appliance for “the strengthening influences of gold, the stabilizing influence of silver.” (1931-1)

Another reading recommended “…lots of bangles at times become confusing and at others almost necessary. Hence those things that are stable as plain gold, or plain silver, or platinum, with the finishings are those influences that are strongest about the entity for helpful forces.” (2390-1)

Platinum was suggested since its “vibrations are in accord with that to keep your animation in accord with the best you

may accomplish.” (1620-2)

A piece of carbon steel was recommended for one individual to prevent colds, congestion, and irritation to the mucous membranes of the throat and nasal passages:

Do not take this as…superstition or…a good luck charm but if the entity will wear about its person, or in its pocket, a metal that is carbon steel preferably in the groin pocket it will prevent, it will ionize the body from its very vibrations to resist cold, congestion, and those inclinations for disturbance with the mucous membranes of the throat and nasal passages. This is a needed element, then, about the body. (1842-1)

The readings also reminded the user that while these items were helpful and useful tools, the ultimate responsibility was for the individual to do all the work. “As these are but lights, but signs in your experience, they are as but a candle that one stumbles not in the dark. But worship not the light of the candle; rather that to which it may guide you in your service. So, whether from the vibrations of numbers, of metals, of stones, these are…influences to make you in attune, one with the Creative Forces; just as the pitch of a song of praise is not the song.” (707-2)

Choosing jewelry with gemstones is a very personal experience, as each individual has a unique vibration that may change over time. A piece may be selected for aesthetic qualities as well as vibratory. The body’s physical reaction to an individual piece of jewelry must also be considered. One woman had a rash develop every time she wore a silver and turquoise ring which had belonged to a friend. She was told in a reading that it was due to “the supersensitiveness of the body to vibrations of this particular ring from those vibrations that are a part of the ring.” (4009-1)

One woman asked about the influence of a pearl necklace she was wearing. Mr. Cayce suggested that “When its vibrations have taken the body-forces, it will be well.” In order to accomplish that, he recommended that the necklace be “demagnetized” by exposure to an ultra-violet ray. (951-6)

The following reading expresses some fundamental ideas for using gemstones and minerals:

For, each soul, each entity, has within its inner being the sum of what it has done, is doing, about its relationships to the whole. And this is the stone [bloodstone] to which the entity [2163] vibrates. Thus it is a helpful force physically, an encouragement to the mental, and vibrates upon the real or inner self. (2163-1)

The Power of Forgiveness

“Who gains by being forgiven and forgiving? The one that forgives…”

- Edgar Cayce reading 585-2

Forgiveness is a very important principle taught in many spiritual traditions around the world. Numerous Cayce readings also instructs us to develop this quality as well. But, the question arises… why forgive?

Why is this such a prevalent teaching? Why have we been instructed to forgive seventy times, seven times? What is the great power of the practice?

From my own experience with forgiveness practice, I know that the power of forgiveness lies in its ability to free us from all the baggage we are carrying around within our hearts. I’m a firm believer that the work of the heart truly begins with forgiveness. And I am talking not only about forgiveness for others, but perhaps even more importantly, I’m also talking about forgiveness for ourselves.

The inability to forgive weighs us down because we go around carrying all this baggage from our past interactions, experiences, and histories. I would even go so far as to say that without forgiveness we are actually chained to the past. For example, let’s say I ask you to call to mind someone who may have hurt you, wronged you, deceived you, used, abused, or took advantage of you. And now when you call them into your mind, let’s say you begin to get upset. Just the thought of this person begins to irritate you, make you annoyed, and angry.

My questions for you are:

Who’s really doing this to you?

Who is ruining your present moment experience? Is it really the person you are thinking about?

No! They aren’t even here with you now. They may be on a beach in Fiji not even giving you a second thought.

What’s ruining your experience, the thing that is actually causing you to get angry and upset, is all the “baggage” you are carrying around in regards to them, the hurt that they may have caused you, etc… Without forgiveness, we are constantly carrying around all this extra weight and remain caught in the hurt and pain of our history.

Through forgiveness, we free ourselves from this past history. We break the chains that are binding us and holding us down so that we can move forward in our journey lighter and freer. And thankfully, like any quality or trait, forgiveness can be cultivated and learned. It will just take time and effort.

Something very important to remember about forgiveness though is that forgiveness does not ignore the truth of our suffering. It acknowledges what is unjust and wrong. It doesn’t say that any harm or hurt that was done to us is ok. It simply says that we are going to let the baggage go. We are not going to carry it around any longer.

Sadly, some have come to believe that forgiveness is a weakness. They think that maybe in some way the practice turns us into a doormat. But this is not true at all. Forgiveness is not weak. It demands courage. Gandhi called forgiveness a “soul force” and the Bhagavad-Gita, a very sacred text in the Hindu tradition, says “if you want to see the heroic look to those who can love in return for hatred; and if you want to see the strong look to those who can forgive.”

One more very important point to remember is that forgiveness really isn’t for the other person. Forgiveness is fundamentally for our own sake. It’s for us; our mental and spiritual health. For, in forgiveness we let go and find relief in our heart for all the anger, hurt, bitterness, and hatred we may carry.

And though when we speak of forgiveness, we often think of it in terms of forgiving others. Finding

10
Winter Wonderment 2023

a way to extend forgiveness to ourselves is one of our most essential tasks too. If we look honestly at our life, we can see the sorrows, pains, and hurts that we have caused others and ourself through our thoughts, words, actions & deeds. And therefore, we must learn to not condemn ourselves but rather look compassionately upon ourselves and our lives. We must extend a compassionate hand of forgiveness to ourselves for making mistakes, acting badly, and being a learner in this life.

Edgar Cayce said, “Don’t condemn self, don’t condemn others. As you would be forgiven, forgive others.”

Forgiveness is a practice because we must work at it. And I tell you truthfully, if we sincerely work at it, there is nothing in this world that isn’t forgivable, that is if we truly want to forgive. But when practicing please keep in the back of your mind that it is a process. We may go through stages of grief, contentment, sorrow, fear and confusion. There may be times we think we have forgiven people and situations and then months later something happens which brings to light that we still hold resentment or anger towards someone or ourselves for a hurt or wrong which was done. Just continue to work at it and know that true forgiveness will arise at some point. Perhaps even forgive yourself for not being ready to forgive just yet, as that is perfectly fine.

When Cayce was asked “How can I overcome antagonistic forces in self and others?” He replied, “By ACTUALLY manifesting forgiveness, more and more.”

And so, if you would like to learn more about this topic and practice a formal forgiveness meditation to help you manifest more forgiveness in your life, then please join us on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 for The Power of Forgiveness webinar from 8 - 9:15pm. Planning for Peace and Prosperity

Now is the moment that we are given. This is our time to make a difference in our lives and in the world. This is a magnificent gift! We can shine in the knowledge that we are here for a purpose. Indeed, we are here to fulfill a role that no one else can fulfill. We are here to create something of value and to leave it for generations to benefit.

How can we best serve ourselves and others at this time in our lives? Peace is required. When we are peaceful, our thoughts and our creativity flows. When we are peaceful, we experience clarity that does not exist without peace. We are here to reflect the peace that we want, and the prosperity that exists – both waiting for us to realize that all is born within us. Peace begins with our desire for tranquility and our actions that follow. To attain peace, we must consciously carve out quiet time and fill it with that which transforms us from chaos to calm. The true

prosperity is in giving to ourselves first. By giving ourselves the gift of peace, we create a pattern for life to give peace back to us, and for us to have more peace to give back to life. Giving ourselves peaceful moments creates peace in our hearts and a flow that supports our inner strength.

Sound is the earliest level of emanation that creates, and we are given this example in ancient texts. In the Christian Holy Bible, for example, Genesis 1:3 says, “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” So with thought and emotion, we speak, and sound takes the command, blends it with light to transform the command into form. We can use this beautiful gift in the conscious practice of affirmations. They are statements of whatever we want to manifest, repeated, with the purpose to shift the energies to bring our desires into manifestation. However, we must be strategic in our planning.

12
Winter Wonderment 2023

There is a special phrase that we use that calls our creative Higher Self into action - even when we don’t use the phrase consciously that way. That phrase is “I AM.” I AM means “The Creator in me is…” When you say “I AM peaceful,” you are also saying that The Presence of the Divine in Me and I am peaceful. Essentially “We are peaceful.” As The Creator, every time we say “I AM,” we are calling upon our God Presence to do whatever we are commanding. We also renew our Divinity every time we say the phrase “I AM.” We put into motion that which we say “I AM” about. To help create peace in your life, you could use intention with sound to create affirmations that say, “I AM peaceful. I AM calm. I AM relaxed. I AM undisturbed.”

We are surrounded with the energies of transformation. Sparkling holiday lights remind us that we are The Light manifest. We are here to be the light, shine the light, share the light and leave that legacy of light. Happy holiday music transforms us - taking us to times that seem simpler in our minds, reminding us of how sacred life is. Being peaceful and prosperous takes transformation. Be kind to yourself by giving yourself moments of tranquility. Sit in the window and let the sun caress you and with intent and purpose, seek the music that is simple and filled with warmth. Take deep breaths and imagine that you are breathing in the sunlight and exhaling your worries.

At this beautiful time of the season, realize how special you are. Give yourself the gifts that you desire the most for yourself and for the world. Know that the gift of peace opens the door to your prosperity for yourself and for the world. Namaste.

Artist of Life; Drawing from Within: On Birthing Truth

“First there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is.” ~ “There is a Mountain” by Donovan

In breaking news, it was reported earlier that a neverbefore-seen island suddenly appeared off the northeast coast. This report has now been updated to include Little Grain Mountain on the same coast vanished at precisely the same time. More information coming as investigations are taking place!

“…for truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say until this mountain, remove hence to yonder place and it shall move, and nothing shall be impossible to you,” said Jesus. ~ King James Bible, Matthew 17:20

Is this a paradox? A mind puzzle or a testing of the strength of our belief in ourselves? Can it be true that with enough faith in self, and in the source that tells us it is so, if only we just believe it, we can do the seemingly impossible?

In this world of diverse individuals there can be a complete spectrum of viewpoints and opinions. Some perspectives will be related to the size of the mustard seed. It’s so tiny, therefore only a tiny bit of belief would be needed. Should be easy enough to muster. But, what about disbelief? How big or small does that need to be to defeat the vision?

Maybe it’s not only about size. Plenty of room here for discussion and taking alternative views. I’m pulled into thinking about the mentality of the mustard seed. It has no doubt that it will become a mustard plant. None. No less, does the human embryo develop into a human being with or without expectations for moving mountains.

With an assortment of possibilities how do we find out what is the truth? Ruling out personal biases, agendas, attachments, as well as the feelings one gets when being accepted with exalted praise or flattery into a group, or of being excluded and shunned when you don’t fit in or go along.

“Lay not that flattering unction to your soul. That not your trespass but my madness speaks.” ~ Hamlet

A truth doula is one possibility. Birthing truth. There is such a thing. It was named and defined in ancient Greece by Plato and inspired by his teacher, Socrates. It’s called “dialectic” or dialectical thinking. It has branched off into various philosophies over time, but here I’d like to stay with its root meaning. The word doula incidentally comes from around the same place and time attributed to Aristotle, Plato’s student. It originates from a Greek word that translates to ‘female slave’. Here, a slave to truth.

Dialectics relates to the fact seeking, inquisitive communication between at least two people with opposing viewpoints. The word comes from the French word dialecte which is an art of dialogue and questioning without attachment and emotions, but with reason and logic. It’s a form of debate, with polite questioning and offering of perspectives. It’s making a sincere effort to go behind each person’s current view to see what can be birthed if they try to understand what might be the same in their opposite views and explore the paradox. A paradox is when opposites can both be true at the same time.

Winter Wonderment 2023

If the conversation is quickly reduced to passionately held positions being pushed upon the other to accept because it’s your truth, and their truth is just as passionately held, then neither have reached truth. What they have are viewpoints and opinions. Truth needs to be birthed in a way as to remove the dividing factor of anger and deep negative emotions carried inside but projected onto others who think differently.

It’s healthy for ourselves as individuals and as groups, large and small, to find a way to accept and respect our diversity. In a circle containing a complete spectrum of individuals, there is always someone opposite of you. We are not all meant to be on the same page and if we are pushed to be, who chooses that acceptable page?

There isn’t a wealth of information on the internet about the approach to using a dialectical method for having a meaningful, compassionate and understanding dialogue with others while staying objective and open when sharing from the subjective, personal self.

I have a couple of books in my personal library I’d recommend that helped me in my research. An excellent resource is “The Philosopher’s Toolbox” (A Compendium of Philosophical Concepts and Methods) by Julian Baggini and Peter S. Fosl.

“Living with Paradox” (An Introduction to Jungian Psychology) by Anne Singer Harris, is another good book. Ms. Harris states “Jung’s theories are founded on the principle of paradox.”

I’m drawn to words like serendipity, coincidentally, and synchronicity. I tend to think things happen for a reason and that patterns, cycles and a connecting of the dots allow us personal insight and guidance for our life’s journey.

From out of nowhere, it came to me to read the Cheshire Cat’s conversation with Alice in the children’s classic story, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. I don’t remember when I last read this story and wondered why my intuition was guiding me in this direction. Yet here it was. An example of a polite

conversation about different viewpoints including a paradox, and maybe a dash of madness.

“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.

“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”

Alice didn’t think that proved it at all; however, she went on “and how do you know that you’re mad?”

“To begin with,” said the Cat, “a dog’s not mad. You grant that?”

“I suppose so,” said Alice.

“Well then,” the Cat went on, “you see a dog growls when it’s angry, and wags its tail when its pleased. Now I growl when I’m pleased and wag my tail when I’m angry. Therefore, I’m mad.”

“I call it purring, not growling,” said Alice.

“Call it what you like,” said the Cat.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ~ Lewis Carroll

We need to talk with each other and birth the truth together.

Peace and Love to all.

Ruby Reds

All varieties of grapefruit have nutritional value, but the ruby red grapefruit is loaded with vitamins and minerals that help to fight off many health conditions and illnesses.

High in Vitamin C, the red grapefruit is the perfect way to keep the immune system strong throughout the winter season. The juice of red grapefruit contains lycopene which helps to slow the process of buildup of plaque on the inside walls of blood vessels. This juice can also reduce high blood pressure as well.

However, it is important if taking prescription drugs, grapefruits may not interact well, consult with your doctor to be sure.

An excellent way to detoxify the liver and lose weight is to add red grapefruit to your diet. There is a good amount of fiber and the fruit is low in calories. Grapefruit helps the body repair damaged DNA and can prevent many types of cancer.

The ruby red is great for diabetics, it helps lower the starches and sweets in the body. Anyone suffering with

digestive disorders, red grapefruit juice increases the flow of gastric juices aiding with digestion and can help to avoid constipation.

It may be odd to think that grapefruit could produce an alkaline effect in the body, when it can taste so sour, but actually it helps get rid of acid. It has been documented through research that red grapefruit juice can help people who suffer with fatigue and exhaustion, it is a quick boost at the end of a long day.

The best way to store your ruby reds is at room temperature, make sure they are not stacked, the fruit is very tender and can bruise which can change the taste and texture.

If you are planning to eat the grapefruit in the future, store them in the refrigerator, keep dry and place them in a bag or bowl, or they can be stored in a crisper drawer for several weeks as long as they remain chilled.

A wonderful and fresh way to begin your day is to reach for your ruby reds, with a touch of honey, reap the rewards of good health with this amazing fruit!

Pauline’s Hearing Has Been Restored with Our Chiropractic Care

no more ringing in my ear. I was so elated! It was unbelievable and so wonderful to hear clearly again! Imagine going to a chiropractor to get your hearing restored!

I continued my visits and Dr. Patrick said x-rays would be taken again after three months of adjustments. The x-rays were taken and much to my amazement, my whole body was in complete alignment. My neck was off by 9% and is now in perfect alignment, and L5 vertebrae in my lower back, which had a 3.5 degeneration was now 0%. I am now on a health maintenance plan and don’t go as frequently as I did, however, I want to maintain good health and maximize my energy.

“It was over a year ago when I noticed that I was having difficulty hearing in my right ear. The left ear was fine, but I had to turn up the volume on the TV, couldn’t always hear my cell phone ringing, and was asking people to repeat themselves. I thought this was a normal aging process.

My husband was having issues with his neck and hips misaligned. He began going to Baker Chiropractic and Wellness for adjustments. They took x-rays and found exactly what areas needed to be adjusted. After he began his chiropractic visits, he insisted that I go and get X-rays too. I wasn’t having any back or neck issues and didn’t think I needed to go, but he insisted. So I went. The X-rays showed a serious problem with the L5 vertebrae in my lower back. Actually, I had 3.5 degeneration, the worse being 4.0, and Dr. Patrick Baker said it would take time to bring it back to normal, or at least to 2.5.

After I began the adjustments, I mentioned that I was having a problem hearing and had a ringing in my right ear. Dr. Patrick said he could correct the hearing by adjusting my atlas/axis near my ear. After 6 visits, one morning I woke up and heard a crackling sound as the ear opened up and I had

My husband is continuing his chiropractic treatments and wellness exercises and has shown much improvement having chronic sinus and neck problems. You Are Your Music!

Music makes you feel – it interacts with your emotions. Everyone has snapped their fingers to a lively beat, and relaxed to the soothing sound of the ocean. We all experience sound waves interacting with our emotions. Sound waves don’t isolate our emotions and ignore all the rest of the waves in our bodies. Sound waves interact with all of the waves in close proximity. That is simply science!

Sound waves interact with our brain waves, taking them to alpha, beta, theta and delta ranges. How significant is this? When operating at certain brainwaves, our bodies produce healthy chemicals and repair our bodies. At other brain waves, one can quit smoking with greater ease. In short, controlling a population’s brain waves shapes their behavior and influences their health. Focusing on this presents a whole new way of looking at our world.

Sound can help or harm us. We must be aware of the

power of sound - for our own good. Sound can be used as a weapon and can slowly make a person sick. We are vulnerable, if sound is used to control us. This can be done without our knowledge, making us puppets.

How about our physical health? Does sound impact that? Researcher Sharry Edwards demonstrated that if she plays the frequency associated with the supplement niacin, then the listener’s face flusheswithout taking the pill. This makes sense as we ingest sounds in our ears and skin. Perhaps sound interferes with neurotransmitters or other signals in the body. Sound is invasive! With Sharry Edward’s free nanovoice.org software, a Fast Fourier Transformer breaks your voice into component pitches, letting you see how your voice’s component frequencies change after taking a pill or eating. This strengthens the connection between what you eat and frequencies in our body’s symphonies.

20
Winter Wonderment 2023

One might question why people haven’t noticed that sound interacts subtly with matter. Sound waves are subtle energy, with tiny influences. We have to listen to the very same tone for a long time to notice its impact. In the mean time we hear different sounds that can cancel each other out. Think of running water on a rock. Of course the water runs off and the rock remains the same. The force of the water is miniscule compared to the strength of the rock. However after gazing at the Grand Canyon, it becomes clear that the pliable water flow does change the rock - slowly but surely the water carves mountains. And so it is with the tiny waves of sound. Slowly, but continually they shape and mold us … just like the relentless impact of ocean waves that grind small pebbles into sand.

The use of sacred and uplifting music impacts us all far more than we ever dreamed. Right along with good nutrition is good music – for a better tomorrow! We are what we eat, but equally we are what we listen to!

Assuming that sound waves intermingle with waves in our body, how do we know what kind of music to listen to? Music with rhythms that match a healthy heart rate improves our well being, because our heart matches the beat. Studies show that rock and heavy metal music exposure can kill a plant, while classical music stimulates the plant’s growth. Even more intriguing is that recorded sounds of nature improve plant growth more than classical music. Mother Nature’s lullabies are the most healing sounds for plants.

Ancient people suspected this to be so - as they observed numeric patterns that repeatedly occur in nature. .. such as patterns found in a bee hive, a sea shell or a galaxy. They observed Mother Nature’s own signature and converted these numbers to music. They also listened to the “sounds of the stars.” Ancient music reflected numeric structures found in Heaven and Earth. Even their musical scales, upon which all music was played, incorporated nature’s fingerprints.

Ancient music was controlled by the governments –to consistently maintain these beneficial patterns. It is difficult to imagine this today with the great freedom that we enjoy to listen to anything that we want, but this was not so in ancient times. For example in ancient Egyptian art there were NO changes in any aspect of it during 3,000 years. Really? Today,

art changes day by day. Long ago no creativity was tolerated. This practice can be observed in stone art that has survived many years, while the memorized or improvised music perished. However, ancient China’s Department of Measurement regulated and policed the length of musical instruments to control the pitches the population heard. This is evidence that music was controlled – just like art. Creativity was not acceptable in art or music and in fact was considered dangerous, akin to our perception of terrorism today. Sages of many great civilizations warn of danger when new vibratory patterns (music) are heard by its citizens – they strived to preserve their blessed sonic patterns copying nature and the stars that uplifted and stabilized their citizens.

Some musicians today are replicating ancient techniques to tune to the vibratory patterns found in nature. The author has been utilizing these ancient practices in her music by incorporating Fibonacci, Solfeggio, flower frequencies and star tones and elements into her music. The quest to regain another level of health through sound has begun, and cannot be stopped.

One Single Act of Kindness

It was the time of year where the Holidays were approaching and everyone was busy with shopping, decorating, baking and work. Juggling everything was always a challenge, but sometimes we all get a little bit too rushed and stressed. We forget about the little things sometimes, and can make what could be

a costly mistake. It was a typical crazy day and I was driving to my bank and decided to get some cash from the ATM, the man in front of me was just leaving. When I drove up to the machine, there big as day was his ATM card, still in the machine. I pulled it out and saw him driving past me slowly down the adjacent street.

I quickly thought I could catch him, why I thought I could, I don’t know, it seems silly to me now. Of course, by the time I got on the same street, I had lost sight of his van. I had almost reached home by now and I thought I will look and see if his name is in the phone book first, because you could read his name on the back of his card clearly.

I quickly found my phone book and looked the name up and found it very easily, I dialed the number, a man answered. I told him who I was and that I had his card that he left in the ATM machine. He was so grateful and asked if I could meet him. I met him that night, he thanked me and offered me money. I did not take it saying to him with a smile, you never know when I might be in a position and need someone’s help. He thanked me again and drove off.

A couple weeks or so passed and I am at the ATM machine again, someone is in front of me, so I am quickly running through my mind, the things I needed to get done, I had a really hectic week ahead and I was getting ready to take care of business details.

The car left in front of me, so I drove up to the ATM machine. I could not believe my eyes! Sure enough, the person in front of me had left their card in the machine again! I sat there a little stunned for a second or two, I took out the card and I quickly drove to the drive thru window and explained to a teller what had just happened and they took the person’s card and said they would contact them and thanked me for turning it in. Again, I headed my car back out of the bank and while on my way, I was thinking, how weird, that this had happened to me again and so soon.

Time had passed and I did not think of these two incidents really ever again, until...

One day I had a busier day than usual and I was out and about in my car when I made a stop to run into a store to exchange a book. I had laid the book down next to my purse on the passenger side. Little did I

know, that I had thrown my purse in the car earlier and my ATM card had slipped out and somehow had slipped between the pages of the book.

I went on my merry way and thought everything was just fine until I needed to get some fuel and reached for my card and could not find it. It was a terrible sinking feeling, I looked inside the car and my purse what seemed like a hundred times and finally I called the bank and told them to cancel it. To my amazement, the person on the other end of the phone informed me that someone had just called and said they have it and it is in safe keeping until I come back and get it.

I was so thankful and still could not believe that someone had turned it in. I remember feeling touched by one single act of kindness, and it warmed my heart. I felt as if an angel was watching over me that day.

My Mom always told me, if you do something good for someone, good will come back to you, she was right.

Celebrate & Enjoy

December and January are the months Americans set aside to celebrate and enjoy time with our loved ones. We have rituals around sharing food and abundance with one another. We make a point of enjoying ourselves, indulging ourselves in some cases (just one more piece of pumpkin pie, I’ll do an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill on Monday, etc.) Here in the Midwest, it may also be the human version of what the squirrels do at this time of year they uncover all the buried nuts and other choice tidbits, gorge themselves on what they can eat, and stuff the rest in their nests for the cold winter ahead.

For those of us who have yards, it is also the time of year when we conduct our yearly ritual of cleaning up leaves and getting outside ready for winter. Since I’ve been outside doing a fair amount of that, I’ve had the opportunity to observe our horses and their antics as the winter approaches. They have

given me a whole new perspective on celebration and enjoyment that I’d like to share.

Celebration has a lot of meanings depending on who you are talking with. For example, it could be a formal event such as a birthday party or as simple as sitting down to dinner with a loved one to celebrate an anniversary. I was outside one day, and observed the horse version of celebration. It was a beautiful, breezy fall day, and I saw my horse Cheyenne stick her head up, and break into a dead run from a standstill. Her pasture buddy Rohan was right behind her. She bucked, she squealed, she stopped, twirled, and ran in the opposite direction. Rohan reared, bucked, and pranced (he is after all a retired show horse, so he always does things with a touch of elegance). I have seen them run before when something startled or frightened them, but their body language did not indicate fear or anxiety. The horses did this for almost 15

24
Winter Wonderment 2023
with Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger

minutes, and it was absolutely stunning to watch. The emotion I got from both of them was sheer joy. They were doing their celebration dance in honor of a beautiful day.

I had another opportunity to experience things from the horse perspective this morning. I let both horses out of the barn, and they found a favorite spot, plopped down, and rolled. They did not just roll once and get up. They reveled in the experience. Rohan cannot roll all the way over, so he laid down, really ground himself into the dust (including his head), got up, laid down and did the same thing on the other side. He did this at least twice on each side, then got up, shot straight up in the air (all 4 feet off the ground simultaneously), then began calmly eating hay. Cheyenne, being a full figured, talented girl, can roll all the way over. She did so several times, grunting the whole time. While the logical part of me worried about colic, another part of me enjoyed watching this big creature wallow and snort and thoroughly enjoy herself. It occurred to me that because animals are so intimately connected with Earth and Nature, they are able to respond with honesty and clarity to simple things like a warm breezy day. They are able to truly bond with Mother by encasing themselves in Her. We often say that animals are “in the moment,” meaning that they are fully present at any given point in time. For animals such as horses, this is rooted in survival. Yet, our horses will lie down in the sun and take a nap for short periods of time. Cheyenne will lie flat out on her side and snore. Our dogs and cats love to lie in the sun outside and snooze too.

As we humans prepare to spend time with our loved ones in celebration and enjoyment, perhaps we can take a lesson from our animals and attempt to be more present and in the moment. Perhaps our celebration is as simple as sharing how important someone is to us, our enjoyment is seeing them smile at us. Now, about that pumpkin pie I’m having tonite....never mind, I’ll go to the gym on Monday!

A gentle reminder for those who live with animals. Holidays can be stressful for animals as well as people. Be sure to talk with them, let them know why you aren’t home as much, that people are coming to visit. Allow animals who are shy or noise sensitive to retreat to a quiet area of the house. How GMOs, Pesticides and Processed Foods Contribute to Common Bowel Disorders

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) — not to be confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — is an autoimmune disease that can have very serious consequences.

According to the latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), IBD affects more than 3 million American adults, nearly triple previous estimates.1 There are two types of IBD: •Crohn’s disease •Ulcerative colitis

Both of these IBD conditions involve chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, fatigue and diarrhea. IBD also raises your risk of developing colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer in the U.S.2

What’s Behind the Rise in IBD?

As with many other autoimmune disorders, IBD cannot be traced back to any single cause; rather, it appears to be influenced by several factors, including: •Genetics •Toxic environmental exposures •Diet •Altered intestinal microbiome •Immune dysfunction

Researchers believe the rise in IBD may be linked to dietary changes, as more people are now eating primarily processed foods high in sugars and synthetic chemicals. Other factors thought to play a role in IBD include:3,4 •Air pollution •Excessive exposure to antibiotics •Pesticide exposure (glyphosate being identified as being particularly harsh on gut microbes) •Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

As noted by Digestive Medical Solutions:5 “[I]n addition to the rising economic, ecological and ethical questions raised by GMOs, there is a growing health risk … Specifically, a higher risk for allergies, toxic intestinal bacteria, reduced immune function, liver problems and many other highly controversial links.

These risks apply to everyone, but especially those with irritable bowel diseases. For a patient with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, they’re devastating, making it difficult for patients to recover properly, especially with so many other complications involved.

Ultimately, GMOs create bowel hypersensitivity, increase inflammation and damage to the intestinal lining. This makes IBD and IBS cases much worse, as they contribute and in some cases, may actually trigger these diseases.”

How Glyphosate Affects Your Health

While Monsanto insists that Roundup is safe and “minimally toxic” to humans, independent research6 strongly suggests that glyphosate residues “enhance the damaging effects of other food-borne chemical residues and toxins in the environment to disrupt normal body functions and induce disease.”

According to Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D., a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Anthony Samsel, Ph.D., a research scientist and consultant:

“Negative impact on the body is insidious and manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body.”

Samsel and Seneff have also published research tying glyphosate exposure to Celiac disease and gluten intolerance.7

While genetically engineered (GE) crops such as corn, soybeans and sugar beets tend to contain higher levels of glyphosate due to them being more heavily sprayed, conventional non-organic crops such as wheat are also routinely doused with glyphosate pre-harvest to boost yield, a practice known as dessication. In summary, studies have found that glyphosate:

• Inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of organic substances. This, Samsel and Seneff believe, is “an overlooked component of its toxicity to mammals.”

One of the functions of CYP enzymes is to detoxify xenobiotics — chemical compounds found in a living organism that are not normally produced or consumed by the organism in question.

By limiting the ability of these enzymes to detoxify foreign chemical compounds, glyphosate enhances the damaging effects of those chemicals and environmental toxins you may be exposed to.

26
Winter Wonderment 2023

• Impairs the serum sulfate transport system in your body. Consequences of glyphosate interfering with CYP enzymes and impairing sulfate transport include GI disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

• Destroys the tight junctions in the cell membranes in your gut, thereby leading to “leaky” gut and absorption of undigested foods you were never designed to absorb.

• Makes the gliadin in wheat highly indigestible. Moreover, by attaching to gliadin, glyphosate may promote immune reactions.

Alarming Levels of Glyphosate Found in Popular Foods

According to independent testing by The Detox Project, glyphosate (the active ingredient in Monsanto’s bestselling herbicide Roundup) is present at “alarming levels” in many popular processed foods.8

Scientists have found glyphosate can alter gene function in the livers and kidneys of rats at levels as low as 0.05 parts per billion (ppb).

Meanwhile, Cheerios was found to contain more than 1,125 ppb of glyphosate, Doritos more than 481 ppb and Ritz crackers more than 270 ppb. According to Dave Murphy, executive director of Food Democracy Now!:

“It’s time for regulators at the EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] and the White House to stop playing politics with our food and start putting the wellbeing of the American public above the profits of chemical companies like Monsanto.”

Protect Your Health by Avoiding GMOs

As noted by Digestive Medical Solution:16

“The first and more important step you can take to protect yourself from damages that may be caused by GMOs is to change your diet. Non-GMO, free-range and otherwise organic foods should replace any GMOs you regularly consume. It also helps to avoid the most common food allergens, such as gluten and sugar products …

However, the damage caused may be long-lasting. GMOs may make you allergic to non-GM foods. Since the genetic material in GM soy transfers to the bacteria

living in the intestines, it continues to function and spew proteins continuously. Clearing the body of these harmful substances is no easy task.”

The most commonly consumed GMO crops (which includes both herbicide-resistant and Bt varieties) are:17,18,19

• Corn (found in most processed foods in the form of corn meal, corn syrup, corn starch, corn flour and so on)

• Soy (which can hide under descriptions such as lecithin and starch, among others)

• Canola (rapeseed oil)

• Sugar beets

You may also be exposed to Bt toxin via meat from animals fed Bt corn, and glyphosate via herbicideresistant GE grain feed such as corn and soy, all of which are common staples in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). This is one of several good reasons for making sure your meats come from organically raised grass-fed animals.

For Optimal Health, Opt for Organic Food

A large number of studies have shown that organic foods:23,24,25,26,27,28

• Are less likely to be contaminated with pesticide residues. (Synthetic chemicals are not permitted in organic agriculture, yet can occur due to contamination from nearby conventional farms.)

• Contain fewer heavy metals (on average 48 percent lower levels of cadmium,29 for example).

• Contain anywhere from 18 to 69 percent more antioxidants than conventionally grown varieties.

• May in some cases be more nutrient-dense. For example, one 2010 study,30 which was partially funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), found that organic strawberries were more nutrient-rich than nonorganic strawberries. (Continued on pg. 28)

6 Strategies to Beat Holiday Depression

“I always feel depressed during the holiday season,” said my new client. “I don’t know what is wrong with me.”

I explained the true facts to her. According to one study, 45% of Christian Americans experience depression during the lead-up to Christmas. And why might that be?

Let’s begin with the definition of depression provided by Transactional Analysis leader Claude Steiner in his book Scripts People Live. “Scarcity of essential life support causes depression. People need food, shelter, space, safety, drinkable water, breatheable air and human contact. . . Hungry, crowded, scared and alienated people are sad and unhappy . . . no matter what else is going on.”

If the depression cycles directly around the December time period, I usually find that a client’s sad and unhappy feelings arise from issues of human contact and of emotional safety. I also see one event-specific cause: continuing emotional burdens which a client is carrying from past painful holiday events.

Whatever the cause, if you expect a sad and unhappy time every November and Decemember, here are some simple strategies which can help you to change your experience and expectations.

1. Release past painful memories. Contact a practitioner of healing programs such as LIIFT, Pranic Psychotherapy or Neuro-Modulation Technique (NMT) to assist you to quickly process and release previous emotional pain associated with the holidays.

2. Create your own community with whom to share holidays. In Cincinnati, Vegans have holiday

28
Winter Wonderment 2023 (Continued from pg. 27)

celebrations with non-meat potlucks. My wife and I host potlucks for each holiday so friends and community members can feel welcomed and appreciated, even if they lack quality family relationships.

3. Create new positive memories. First you decide that you will replace the old painful with new positive. Then you create opportunities to do so. In addition to creating or participating in events such as mentioned above, you could volunteer to bring happiness to others and share the pleasure. Examples: On Thanksgiving and Christmas, one lady volunteers with Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, bringing meals and companionship to the homebound. Another friend volunteers at a hospital to bring extra love to the hurting, scared and alone. A third takes children from difficult family situations out to a child-friendly event or even a kiddie park for an afternoon, so they get extra nurturing attention.

4. Befriend some animals at a shelter. An appreciative pooch or a purring cat can really lift one’s mood.

5. Take a hike, preferably with others. Exercise and nature-anchoring improves moods. And to share it with others adds another positive dimension.

6. Concentrate on gratitude. If you often think about what you don’t have or what should have happened, you create a negative-emotion loop. You must use your intentionality to cut the loop. Be grateful for the good you are experiencing. Enjoy the “ positive now”, and begin anchoring these happy experiences by writing a journal. The LIIFT healing process actually uses the process of write/see/say to help people permanetize new good memories and thoughts into their being.

You don’t have to do everything mentioned here all
