WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE
une has always been a special month to me, but for a mostly silly reason: It’s the month when I feel like I can finally put away my winter coat! In May, we start to get a taste of warmer weather. But May in the Midwest is a tease, and the month still has too many fluctuating temperatures to not have a coat handy. But June? Bye bye, jackets and coats… at least until September.
No coats, lots of sun, lazy days, loose schedules — that’s what June is about to me. It’s also about packing in as much fun as possible, as it’s the start of my kids’ summer break. At this point of summer break, the road is wide open to the possibilities, and the responsibilities of school are nowhere in sight. It’s time to focus on fun!
This issue is focused on fun, too. SO much summer fun! Throughout the magazine, you’ll find ideas for places to go and things to experience around southwest Ohio with your family to make this a summer to remember. From splash pads to animal encounters, and outdoor festivals to indoor activities, let this be your guide to filling out those summer bucket lists.
Have a wonderful June!

Dad jokes actually empower kids to become better adults! Researchers found that a dad’s willingness to embarrass himself repeatedly subconsciously teaches kids to be OK with awkwardness. So when does a dad joke become a dad joke? When it becomes apparent!

For a break from all the action, visit the concession stand at Kohler Pavilion for new food and drink items. The Taco Experience is now serving made-to-order chicken and steak tacos and burritos. Grown-ups can sip alcoholic beverages, including options by Sun King Brewery, sold exclusively outside. A new nonalcoholic choice is bottled teas by local favorite Tea’s Me Cafe, owned by Indiana Fever legend Tamika Catchings.
Despite everything that’s new, one aspect of the Riley Sports Legends Experience remains the same: to provide a fun, inclusive environment in which kids of all ages and abilities have the chance to try out sports that are new to them and learn new skills.
Trained coaches are there to help and offer gentle encouragement. “As coaches, we approach every day with a family-learning mindset, focused on creating memories and learning experiences for every member of a family,” says Amber Miller, program manager for the Riley Sports Legends Experience. “If a family or child is timid toward something, we are always there to support them by showing them how fun trying new things can be and that mistakes are going to happen and that is just fine — that’s how we get better!”
The Riley Sports Legends Experience is included with general admission and membership. It is open until 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month and closes for the season on Nov. 2.

Indianapolis went from zero revolving sushi restaurants to two in less than a year. Sushi Station is the second revolving sushi restaurant to open in Hamilton County, and it's a fun place to eat, especially if you have kids with you.
The sushi is good, but really, you visit a revolving sushi restaurant for the ambiance. It’s all about an engaging dining experience centered around a conveyor belt transporting a variety of sushi dishes directly to you. It's all about the cute mini Shinkansen (bullet train) that delivers your edamame and dumplings to you. It’s all about the tokens you earn for the sushi you eat, which you can redeem for adorable prizes. This is an "experience" restaurant, for sure.
You will find a variety of sushi rolls to choose from at Sushi Station. Everything from California rolls to spicy sushi rolls to nigiri to sashimi are gliding by you on
the conveyor belt by your table. Each type of sushi comes with four pieces on a small plate, and each plate ranges from $2.99 to $6.99. You simply take the plate you want from the conveyer belt and enjoy! You get a token for every $50 of food you eat, to use at the vending machines. For those who want something other than (or in addition to) sushi, Sushi Station also offers ramen, chicken teriyaki, fried rice and other Japanese dishes.
Sushi Station is a fun familyfriendly restaurant, and a great entry point into the world of sushi, especially for kids.

Searching for a place that values inclusion and understanding, along with the activities.
t was Labor Day weekend last year, and my husband was enjoying some well-deserved time with friends. At the time, we were a family of four, so the two boys (each rocking an autism diagnosis) and I set forth to choose our own adventure. Since it was a holiday weekend, our regular spot was closed. We decided to grab some friends and head over to We Rock The Spectrum in Carmel.
When I say we were greeted with open arms, I’m not exaggerating. This place is truly where inclusion and community meet. Not only did my autistic kiddos feel at home, but also, my adult autistic friend felt valued, respected and included, too. It’s often hard to nail down how to provide this intangible experience, but the staff at We Rock had it goin’ on.
Families of neurodivergence often feel alienated, alone or like they can’t attend certain venues or events because they’re too crowded, the lights are too bright or flashy, the music is too loud — or for a multitude of other reasons, it’s just not a fit.
WORDS BY JESSICA WILLITS, NEURODIVERSITY CONNECTION
Sensory-friendly accommodations are becoming more common. Some venues now offer headphones for purchase or loan, but these attempts alone can sometimes feel like an afterthought rather than a true effort to be inclusive.
But you know what? Safe, inclusive spaces do exist. And it’s about more than just a fun play place for the kids. It’s about connection for families. Don’t get me wrong: It’s amazing when our kiddos find others to bounce beside on the trampoline, parallel play next to, and vocal stim with until the cows come home. But what’s even more powerful is the mama we trade numbers with to text at 3 a.m. after a challenging day, or the new specialist we recommend to someone who just gets it. That’s real connection, too.
Inclusion isn’t just a sensory bin in the corner or a calm room off to the side — it’s a mindset. It’s staff who meet kids where they are without judgment. It’s a space that flexes with a family’s needs, not one that expects everyone to conform. It’s dimmed lights, no-pressure play, and people who understand that stimming, scripting or sitting out for a while are all valid ways to be. Every child is different, which means the more options we have, the more kids (and their grownups) feel like they belong. Let’s keep building an inclusive community — not just for our kids, but for ourselves, too.
