Back in Session

Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy summer

break. But as much as I like the freedom of summer, it’s always around August when I crave the routine of my children going back to school.

It’s just part of who I am. I like scheduled days, and setting alarms, and needing to be somewhere on time. I am also one of those people who likes Mondays. Gasp! I know. But to me, Mondays are a day to make a fresh start and get some things checked off my to-do list. I love a good to-do list.

For those who love a good to-do list like me, but who need a little push to jump back into this back-to-school season, you’ll want to check out “Your A+ Back-to-School Checklist” on page 14. This article will help you prepare your child — and your whole family — for the new school year and all it entails. Beyond buying school supplies,

there are many important things to consider to prepare your child mentally and emotionally for the back-to-school transition.

There are still a few things left on my summer to-do list. The big one? Savor the last bits of summer as much as possible. It’ll be gone before we know it.

Enjoy the end of summer!

Gracious Farm Herbal Learning

Step onto the farm property of Gracious Farm Herbal Learning for an earthy lesson on herbs and botanicals you can use right off your land. Southwest Ohio Parent sat down with Crystal Judge, owner and operator of Gracious Farm, to learn how the farm teaches visitors how to use plants like wildflowers as food and medicine.

Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to open Gracious Farm to the public?

I've been a student of herbal learning for almost 30 years now and so many people said they wish they had plant knowledge, too. It can be scary to start something new but I wanted to show people that it can be easy, fun and exciting.

What is unique about Gracious Farm?

As far as our products, we grow most of the ingredients. We really take pride in the entire process and the

connection to the plants as food and medicine.

Gracious Farm classes look like a blast for families! Who would you recommend to try a Gracious Farm class?

Anyone! We have classes designed for children, families, individuals and groups. We teach Herbal Homeschool, Herbal Learning and host summer camps at Gracious Farm. We also have herb walks and specialty classes. On location, we go to schools, clubs and meetings from various different groups.

Does Gracious Farm have big goals for the future?

The original goal was to be the largest supplier of dried herbs in Ohio and to be a local nursery. As we have leaned into teaching more, we have tossed around the idea of becoming a non-profit in herbal education. So really we are still trying to figure out how we could be the biggest benefit to the community.

Bitter Sweet

A soft pink house on the corner of Jefferson and Pike in Reading has a surprising menu behind its tall wooden doors. Cheesy waffle sticks, birthday cake crepes and Thai boba tea are waiting behind the counter of Bitter

Sweet’s crepe, smoothie and coffee shop.

Crepes

The highlight of the menu, crepes offer a sweet or savory meal paired with an iced tea or warm coffee. The crepes are made deliciously thin and airy with your preference of sweets like cookies & cream, banana cream pie, honey & lemon, berries & cream, triple chocolate and more. Savory crepes are BLT, chicken teriyaki, cheese, pepperoni, meat lovers, Hawaiian pizza and others.

Waffle Sticks

One of the best combos of savory and sweet is Bitter Sweet’s one-ofa-kind waffle sticks. On a popsicle stick, waffles are served plain or

with your choice of cheese (this is a must-try!), blueberry or chocolate chip. Waffle sticks are a perfectly fun meal for kids!

Coffee, Tea + Smoothies

Drinks at Bitter

Sweet come iced or hot and include Thai Tea, Frappe, Tres Leches, espresso, Italian soda, drip coffee, lemonade, fruit tea with boba and smoothies. Popular smoothie flavors like blueberry, kiwi, lychee, mango, peach, strawberry, pineapple, mixed berry and pina colada keep you refreshed while coffee drinks give an extra burst of energy. Enjoy a vanilla, mocha, caramel or pumpkin latte with your warm honey and lemon crepe.

Retail

On a recent trip to Thailand, Bitter Sweet filled their retail area with Thai snacks and fun items for kids to purchase like soft silicone earrings, rings, hair clips, candy and small trinkets. Sweet Room rental packages include two hours of space, tables, chairs, fruit, cupcakes or crepes. Tables and chairs are spacious in the pink house-turnedsweet-shop with shelves of children’s games and toys to play while enjoying a cheesy waffle stick and berry smoothie.

Learn about the ancient American Indian cultures of Ohio

Peebles, Ohio

A unique historical site in Ohio, Serpent Mound is a must-visit. Built by the ancient American Indian cultures of Ohio, it is one of the largest effigy mounds (a mound in the shape of an animal) in the world, representing a snake with a curled tail. The site also contains three burial mounds — two created by the Adena culture (800 B.C.-A.D. 100), and one by the Fort Ancient culture (A.D. 1000-1650). Serpent Mound gives visitors a glimpse into the culture and beliefs of ancient Native American civilizations, and the surrounding park also offers plenty of recreational opportunities for families and nature-lovers. Take a hike along the nature trails, or bring a picnic and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. As a designated National Historic Landmark, Serpent Mound is truly a wonder to behold.

AUGUST 2023 / OHPARENT.COM 13

As the summer comes to an end, it’s time to gear up for a new school year. Although buying school supplies and organizing schedules is important, it’s also important to prepare your child mentally and emotionally for the backto-school transition. Here’s a quick checklist to help you ensure that your child is ready for the big first day!

1. Communicate Openly

Encourage your child to express their concerns, fears and excitement about starting school again. Regularly engage in open conversations about their expectations, friendships and any worries they might have. Be a good listener and provide reassurance and support. Open communication is the key to understanding your child's emotions and addressing them effectively.

2. Establish Routines

Help your child find a sense of structure by gradually reintroducing school routines. Begin by setting consistent bedtimes and waking schedules a week or two before school starts. This will help your child adjust their sleep patterns and be more alert and focused during the school day.

3. Reconnect with Friends

Encourage your child to reconnect with old friends before school starts. Organize playdates or outings to

YOUR

A+ BACK-TOSCHOOL CHECKLIST

10 ways to prepare your

child

(and you!) for a successful school year.

6. Practice School Behaviors

rebuild those important bonds. This will help alleviate any worries about making new friends and transitions within the school community.

4. Visit the School

If possible, arrange a visit to the school a few days before the first day. Familiarize your child with the layout of the school, including the classrooms, cafeteria and playground. This will alleviate anxiety about navigating through a new environment, making your child feel more comfortable when the big day arrives.

5. Reflect on the Past Year

Take some time to reflect on the previous school year with your child, and discuss both the positive and challenging aspects. Encourage them to set realistic goals for the upcoming year and brainstorm ways to overcome any difficulties they may have faced. This will help your child feel prepared and motivated to tackle new challenges ahead.

This is especially important for young students — and your child’s teacher will appreciate it, too! Go over basic school behaviors, such as raising your hand to get your teacher’s attention, taking turns, following the teacher’s instructions, waiting quietly in line, being polite to classmates, working quietly and independently, and other behaviors that your child might need to know in the classroom.

7. Practice Relaxation Techniques

Teach your child calming techniques to manage stress and anxiety. Breathing exercises, meditation or just taking deep breaths can help your child relax and refocus during challenging moments at school. Practicing these techniques together will empower your child with valuable coping skills.

8. Discuss Time Management

Time management skills are crucial for academic success. Talk to your child about planning their schedule, prioritizing tasks and setting goals. Teach them how to break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps.

By developing good time management habits, your child will feel less overwhelmed and more in control.

9. Encourage Healthy Habits

Healthy habits contribute to emotional well-being. Ensure your child gets enough sleep, eats a balanced diet and engages in regular physical activity. Encourage them to hydrate adequately and minimize screen time. When a child feels physically well, their emotional and mental state is positively influenced.

10. Build Confidence

Build your child’s confidence by acknowledging their strengths and celebrating their achievements. Encourage them to participate in activities they enjoy and give them age-appropriate responsibilities. Self-assurance will enable your child to face challenges head-on and thrive academically and emotionally.

These are just some of the ways to provide a strong foundation for your child's well-being and success this school year. Remember, a prepared and emotionally supported child has a much smoother transition back to school!

HOMESCHOOLING AND CO-OPS:

A Viable School Choice for Parents

Thinking about home education for your child? Here’s what to consider.

ome education is one option that parents might consider for their child. And for parents opting to homeschool, the month of August is a busy time! This is generally the month to send in a Notification of Intent (a form used to notify the department of education that a child will be homeschooled instead of attending a public or private educational institution), choose curriculum, join a local co-op and fill in enrichment activities. We’ve rounded up our top FAQs for home education by a local homeschool mom.

Notification of Intent in Ohio

Ohio law states that parents must notify the superintendent in their home district with a letter of intent to home educate. A great resource for legal documents and general support is the volunteer-led online

group, Ohio Home-schooling Parents, who clearly lists out all of the laws and forms. To send in a Notification of Intent (NOI) to homeschool, children must be age 6 by the first day of school in your district. Your NOI must be postmarked by certified mail to the superintendent before the end of the first week of school in the home district.

Assessors

At the end of your homeschool year, an assessor is required to confirm progress to send in with next year’s NOI. The accessor must be Ohio licensed or certified to complete a portfolio review. Alternatively, parents can choose a nationally normed, standardized test assessment. For a complete list of Ohio assessors, visit ohiohomeschoolingparents. com/recommended-assessors

With 900 required education hours each year, enjoy your homeschool freedom!

Co-Ops

Southwest Ohio has dozens of co-ops; some have drop-off programs with paid teachers while

others are led by parents of the co-op. Exploring new co-ops offers a variety of opportunities for homeschooled students. Here are a few to explore in Southwest Ohio.

Local Spotlight: Cincinnati Nature Center

Four words sum up the mission of the Cincinnati Nature Center (CNC): Nature is for everyone. From protecting the land and wildlife within CNC to providing trails, educational programs and events for people of all ages, CNC welcomes thousands of nature enthusiasts each year. Tracy Smith, marketing manager for the Cincinnati Nature Center, shares with us a little about this nature education organization and community of people who enjoy and care about nature.

CNC is a mainstay in the area. How did it get started?

For many years, Stanley M. Rowe, Sr. had the vision of a wooded preserve where children would be taught to appreciate and understand the natural world. In 1965, his vision became a reality with the creation of the Cincinnati Nature Center. With the help of 12 dedicated and visionary naturalists, the 175-acre wooded estate of Carl and Mary Krippendorf in Milford, Ohio, was acquired. Two years later on April 16, 1967, the Nature Center opened to the public.

Conservation is a large part of your mission. Please tell us about your initiatives.

The mission of Cincinnati Nature Center is to inspire conservation through personal experiences, education and care for the land. Each year, our nonprofit organization welcomes thousands of nature enthusiasts from around the region and beyond to explore the 1,800 acres of forests, prairies, streams, ponds and wetlands that make up our two locations: Rowe Woods and Long Branch Farm & Trails. We also offer educational programming for children, teens, families and adults, and connect thousands more to nature through our online learning programs, social media and e-newsletters. Additionally, our Nature for All program provides low to no cost nature experiences to people from all across the Cincinnati area.

What programs do you offer for preschool and school-aged children?

We offer week-long CincyNature Spring Break Camp and Summer Camp, Children’s Saturday Programs in the spring and fall, a Nature Preschool, drop-in programs in our Nature PlayScape, and many other family and kid-friendly programs throughout the year.

You have an active volunteer program. How can people get involved in it?

We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to fit the volunteer’s interests and physical abilities. Anyone interested in volunteering can learn more and apply at cincynature.org/volunteer. We also have an active teen volunteer group. To learn more, visit nextinnature.org

Tell us about the fall and winter programs you have planned.

We have several programs coming up this fall, including Forager’s Fest, a perfect date-night event for parents, on September 15, and a Nature’s Candyland Adventure for ages 5 and up on October 28. Families won’t want to miss our Light in the Forest winter event in December, and we offer several maple tapping programs starting in January. To check for available programs, visit cincynature.org/ things-to-do

How can people support your work?

To support Cincinnati Nature Center, please consider becoming a member. You can learn more at cincynature.org/membership. Volunteering, becoming a donor or sponsor, renting one of our two historic homes for an event, and attending programs are also great ways to support our work.

5 SKILLS

Your Neurodiverse Kid Can Learn in Occupational Therapy

Unlock your child’s potential through skill-building play.

Cultivating SelfRegulation Skills

Self-regulation is a child's ability to manage sensory input, emotions, behaviors and reactions to their environment. OT addresses self-regulation by decoding a child's unique sensory profile.

Occupational therapy (OT) can be a valuable tool for helping children develop essential skills and overcome challenges. In adolescence, the most important occupations include play, self-care, sleep, socialization and education. “Occupational therapists can help identify a child's individual neurological and sensory-processing differences,” explains Anna DeHondt, OTR/L for KTL Therapy. With this key information, OTs can help create an environment where the child’s sensory needs are met — a place where they can learn and grow.

Developing Fine Motor Skills

Daily activities like handwriting, cutting paper, tying shoes and using utensils can be a challenge for neurodiverse kids. Fine motor development is complex and involves visual attention and perception, muscle strength, and hand-eye coordination, says Karen Stevens, OTR/L, a school district therapist and therapist at Elite Kids. When kids develop a stable core or trunk and develop larger muscles, like those needed to throw a ball, their motor skills will greatly improve. OTs use a variety of methods to improve fine motor skills, including play-based therapy such as sorting small toy figures with tongs, locating hidden beads in putty in order to string them into a necklace, tracing designs with color change markers, playing board games, and interacting with technology. All of these interventions can improve a child’s school readiness.

“Some children may be hyper-responsive, or more sensitive to sensory stimuli — they may be avoidant of certain environments or sensory input,” DeHondt says. “Other children can be hypo-responsive, meaning that their sensory system does not easily register sensory input, and therefore they will seek input from their environment to feel regulated.”

When working with families, DeHondt promotes the goal of regulation before expectation. “In other words, once a child is regulated, then they are better able to demonstrate all of their amazing strengths and abilities for play, socialization, self-care and education — just to name a few!” Educating families on the child's unique sensory profile helps them support their child’s self-regulation by helping them add the proper supports at home.

Overcoming Challenges in Social Settings

Neurodiverse children may find social interactions extremely difficult, Stevens explains, because they are frequently weak at reading social cues. “Obviously,

this can create challenges educationally, socially and vocationally,” she says. They may interpret statements literally when it is just an expression. They may become fixated on one detail in a set of verbal instructions or may require extra time to consider their answer to questions.

An OT may plan therapy sessions with a child and one of their peers in order to for these challenges as they naturally appear. This may take place while playing a board game, doing a craft, or having a child teach their peer a task. “As issues arise, the challenge can be addressed and feedback provided through carefully directed conversation.” An OT can also work with families to prepare for social challenges by creating schedules with plenty of breaks and safe spaces, as well as educating the family on triggers and indicators that the child needs a break.

Improving Play Skills

OT sessions are designed to be engaging and enjoyable for children, putting playtime front and center. Sessions often include swinging, jumping, crashing into a crash pad and tactile play.

“Pediatric occupational therapy is play-based, which means that all interventions are intended to be playful and therefore intrinsically motivating for the child,” DeHondt says. “In treatment sessions, we will use games,

imaginative play, obstacle courses, and art as ways to work on the child's fine motor skill development.” After engaging their play skills in therapy, kids are given exercises to help them when engaging with others in playtime at home.

Work on Executive Function Skills

OTs can help neurodiverse kids plan ahead, meet goals, show self-control, follow step-by-step directions and stay focused. These are all executive function skills that will help serve the child their entire life. Learning to plan, organize and modify tasks with the help of a therapist can help children to be successful in a school setting. “Therapy goals and activities are individualized to help a child acquire partially developed or missing skills in order to experience greater success in their environment,” Stevens explains.

Offering neurodiverse children a pathway to growth, OT can help children enhance their fine motor skills, learn to self-regulate, participate socially, play well, and improve their executive function as they engage in play-based learning. With these new skills, they’ll be more empowered in their daily lives to form meaningful connections and reach their full potential. Through partnering with an OT, parents and caregivers can support their neurodiverse children in their journey towards a brighter future!

Navigating the Road Ahead: How to Support Your New Teen Driver

With your teen now behind the wheel, the journey of parenthood takes another turn.

Watching your child get behind the wheel for the first time is definitely one of those anxietyfilled milestones. As your mind tries to grapple with how your baby is at this point in their life already, you also know they need your support and encouragement to navigate this new terrain.

Offer Lots of Support

“There are many ways that parents can support their teen drivers,” says Tina Nicolazzi, whose family has owned and operated a driving school since 1987. “The first is to lead by example. Teens tend to copy their parents.”

Create a Driving Contract

Nicolazzi also suggests that parents should remain patient in the car when their teen is practicing. “Yelling at them or acting nervous will only cause the driver to be anxious,” she says.

Practice, Practice, Practice

The average teenager takes six one-hour behind-the-wheel lessons, and many of them don't get the adequate practice between lessons to make them efficient. Nicolazzi says that the best thing to do would be to practice — a lot. Ohio requires a minimum of 50 hours of practice (and 10 hours at night) before a new driver is eligible to get their license, and those hours must be logged on an official state form.

Parents should also draft up a driving contract, Nicolazzi suggests. Contracts can help keep teenage drivers accountable to their families by stating the rules to follow to be able to keep the privilege of driving. These contracts can include things like how many friends are allowed in the car at a time, what times they can drive and rules for technology use.

Enroll in Driver Education

Parents should enroll their teen in driver education. “I truly believe it makes a difference in whether a new driver will be safe and prepared when they are ready to drive independently,” Nicolazzi says.

However, not all driving schools are the same. Do your research, read reviews, call and see if you can speak with someone on the phone, and make sure the people teaching the classes are experienced.

Nicolazzi says that enrolling in driver education can also help alleviate the anxiety that parents and new drivers might feel. This includes online or in-person classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons.

“The anxiety for parents and teens are different,” Nicolazzi says. “Parents have anxiety about the idea of their child learning a new potentially dangerous skill, insurance costs and how they will teach and practice with their teenager. Teenagers are more anxious about the unknown. Driving is very new for them, and that alone is scary.”

Classes can help parents feel less anxious because their child is being taught by professionals and informed of all the potential hazards and the safest methods of driving.

The best way to ease a teenager’s anxiety is to take away as much of the unknown as possible. “If they are nervous to start their lessons, have them get acquainted with the driving school and the instructor they will be driving with,” Nicolazzi says. “Also, once your teenager has obtained their permit, let them get behind the wheel in an empty parking lot or neighborhood to get familiar and comfortable being in the driver’s seat. Starting with the basics and slowly progressing is the best way to go.”

Overall, parents should stress how important safe driving is and remind their children that driving is a privilege. If the parent takes learning to drive seriously, so will the teenager.
