Foreword A good health is one of the greatest assets for people all over the world. The global demand for healthcare is increasing rapidly and one of the major challenges of our time is to provide suitable and affordable solutions for everyone, everywhere. The Dutch are among the healthiest and happiest people worldwide. That is partly attributable to our accessible and good healthcare, which constantly is ranked high internationally. The Netherlands is renowned for its affordable and effective public-private healthcare system delivering quality care. Approaching complex health issues Our Life Science & Health sector has a strong global position. At the foundation of these successes lies a typically Dutch quality: the willingness to share knowledge within a tight-knit cooperation between industry, research, civil society organisations and government. It makes us a frontrunner in public-private research and open innovation partnerships. This is also the way we approach complex health issues: interdisciplinary, from science to patient.

companies, research institutions, investors and government, anywhere in the world. The Health~Holland Guide 2015-2016 presents some of the innovative Dutch organisations that operate in the Life Sciences & Health sector. It is with great pride to introduce these organisations to you.

We are happy to share these solutions with the rest of the world. Effective solutions Our approach is evident in our healthcare solutions: complete, effective and coherent products and services geared to what people need. The Netherlands consistently ranks in the top three of the Euro Health Consumer Index and has even held the leading position for the last three years consecutively. Innovative Dutch products and services help answer the challenges of our time: demographic ageing, the increased prevalence of chronic diseases, unhealthy lifestyles and increasing health expenditure. 2010. Entrepreneurs and researchers are given the opportunity to do what they excel in. One of these top sectors is Life Sciences and Health.

Top sectors policy is starting to pay off

Ambitious policy Many countries are faced with major social challenges when it comes to accessible, affordable and quality care. This translates into a growing demand for innovative concepts and products. These are exciting times when it comes to innovation. The pace at which new technologies are becoming available is incredible. At the same time we must find ways to reach a new optimum, where new technologies contribute to more patient-oriented health care by creating more freedom of choice and a better quality of life at lower cost. But we all know that technologies and smart innovations rarely come from governments. To succeed in meeting these challenges, it is crucial that there is collaboration throughout the whole value chain in the life sciences and health sector: from patients, health professionals, physicians and clinicians to researchers, start-ups, health insurers, investors and so on. That is why the Dutch government launched a strong and ambitious enterprise policy, the Top Sectors Policy, in

Introducing innovations in healthcare The Dutch Life Sciences and Health sector has proven its great value for the Dutch healthcare system, the Dutch economy and export. Delegations from all over the world have visited the Netherlands to gather more information and collaborate. They are interested in, for example, our system of eldercare, our health insurance system – which has managed to reduce the growth of our healthcare expenditure for the first time in years – as well as the national plan on dementia, population studies, innovative medical technology, care for people with Parkinson’s disease, homecare and e-health. We are proud to see that our top sectors policy is starting to pay off. We will continue our approach. It is only through integration and mutual understanding of the different ‘worlds’ that truly innovative and useful medical devices, systems and services can be introduced in the healthcare sector. For the benefit of all people, that they may live a long life, as healthy and independent as possible. The Health Holland Guide will help you get acquainted with the Dutch Life Sciences and Health sector. Our challenges are your challenges. Our solutions may be yours too.

About the Dutch Life Sciences & Health sector The Netherlands is home to a vibrant, concentrated Life Sciences & Health cluster of more than 2.200 healthcare companies and research organisations, all within a 200 kilometre radius. The Netherlands is considered to be the most concentrated region in the world when it comes to creating economic and social value to healthcare. It all started in the 16th and 17th century, when the Dutch invented the microscope and pioneered in microbiology. Nowadays, The Netherlands faces challenges, but through innovation it is able to deal with increasing health care costs. the dutch life Sciences & Health sector has a very strong reputation. the industry has a broad spectrum ranging from medical devices, high-tech and e-health to hospital building and public health. it also includes education & communication, nutrition, bio-medical and pharmaceuticals. taking into account the global and national challenges of healthcare, the dutch life Sciences & Health sector is working on enhancing healthcare through innovation. Through efficient, effective, accessible, comfortable and high-quality healthcare solutions, costs can be reduced while capacity increases and the quality of care improves.

The Netherlands is consistently ranked in the top three of the EuroHealth Consumer Index and even took the number 1 position for the last three years (2012, 2013, 2014).

In 2014 a total of 1,1 million people worked or volunteered in the health sector: 178.000 nurses and caretakers 22.600 Physiotherapists 22.500 Medical Specialists 9.300 General Practitioners 8.500 dentists Source: dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports, 2014

What are global healthcare challenges? each country is geographically, demographically, politically and economically different. therefore each country faces different healthcare challenges. nevertheless, some global trends seem to affect all of us now or in the near future. First of all we see an aging society in which more people are confronted with chronic diseases. Whereas in the netherlands it is estimated that seven million people will be chronically ill by 2030, it is believed that half of the world’s population is chronically ill by 2050. Secondly our world population, and especially the middle class, is growing rapidly. this leads to an increase in the demand for healthcare. even today there is already a global shortage of health workers, both nurses and physicians. in the netherlands the shortage is estimated to be 450.000 workers by 2025. the third trend is the negative impact that unhealthy lifestyles have on our healthcare. a change in lifestyle increases the load on our healthcare systems. our use of tobacco, alcohol, and fast food combined with less exercise leads to obesity, diabetes, cardio-

Total healthcare expenditure in The Netherlands: 14.5% of GDP, 95 billion Euro (2014) 33 billion: Basic / General Healthcare 23 billion: Care for the elderly / disabled / Chronically ill 5 billion: Supplementary Care (e.g. dentist, optician, etc.) 3 billion: Social Support (e.g. mental healthcare)

vascular diseases and cancer. these diseases increase the demands on our healthcare professionals and on the infrastructure around them. Healthcare in The Netherlands the netherlands is consistently ranked in the top three of the euro Health Consumer index and even took the number one position for the last three years (2012, 2013, 2014). the Health Consumer Powerhouse (2014) states that ‘it seems very difficult to build an Index of the HCP type without ending up with the netherlands on the medalists’ podium, creates a strong temptation to actually claim that the winner of the eHCi 2014 could indeed be said to have “the best healthcare system in europe”.’ in recent years the european Consumer Powerhouse and the Commonwealth Fund ranked the dutch healthcare system as best performing in international comparative studies. dutch healthcare is of high quality, accessible to and affordable for all. it is no wonder that many countries point to the netherlands as an example of how the quality of healthcare can be guaranteed while the costs can be kept at a reasonable level. Most of the dutch know-how on life Sciences & Health is available for all. as over the last centuries, these companies see a global market where they can put their expertise to work to innovate healthcare systems. Priorities in Dutch healthcare the netherlands is well aware of the increasing costs of healthcare which was set at 14,5 procent of GdP in 2014 (95 billion euro). For this reason the dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports’ highest priority is to sustain and even reduce the costs of healthcare. With almost 17 million inhabitants and a geographical size of 41.500 kilometres2, the netherlands is a small country with a high population density. in 2014 average

It is no wonder that many countries point to The Netherlands as an example of how the quality of healthcare can be guaranteed, while the costs can be kept at a reasonable level. life expectancy was set at 80,91 years. in 2014 the country had 85 hospital organisations at 131 locations of which eight are university Medical Centres. next, there are 112 outpatient clinics. the current trend shows a decrease in the number of hospital organisations and a change from general towards specialised hospitals, but an increase of accessibility of healthcare due to healthcare delivery at more locations. the number of hospital beds was set at 4,7 per 1.000 inhabitants in 2011, which is well below the oeCd average and further decreasing. dutch politics promote shorter recovery times (in 2012 the average stay in hospitals was 5,8 days) in hospitals and more homecare in order to reduce costs. on the other hand, the number of long term beds (in care houses) was set at 68,5 per 1.000 inhabitants in 2011, which is well above the oeCd average. this is primarily caused by an aging population. Hence the dutch government’s emphasis on elderly care (and homecare).

According to the WHO (2014) the following ten diseases are the cause of more than half of worldwide deaths: 1. Ischaemic heart disease (13.2%) 2. Stroke (11.9%) 3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (5.6%) 4. Lower respiratory infections (5.5%) 5. Trachea and bronchus cancers (2.9%) 6. HIV/AIDS (2.7%) 7. Diabetes mellitus (2.7%) 8. Diarrhoeal diseases (2.7%) 9. Road injury (2.2%) 10. Hypertensive Heart diseases (2.0%) in 2013 the main causes of death in the netherlands were Cancer, Cardiovascular diseases and lung diseases.

in 2014 some 1,1 million people worked in the healthcare sector (this excludes volunteers). in almost any field the number of workers is below the OECD average which already might indicate a capacity shortage and need for innovative solutions.
