DECEMBER 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Edito r’s V iew Dear Readers, For the last ten years, four times a year we have published wedding special issues and I have been writing my editorial columns in every issue, but never wrote a real wedding article. For the first time in this issue, I have written real wedding stories from questionnaires filled out by newlyweds, mostly brides. And it has been a very unique and heartwarming experience. Reading answers, mostly written by brides about how they met and their proposal was very heartwarming. We have covered five love stories in this issue and everyone is different but very romantic. It has been said that when two people are destined to connect, it doesn’t matter what they do, who they are, or where they live, they will surely be united! And that is exactly what happened in all five love stories. Each one of them met by pure coincidence, but all of them knew in their first meeting that they found their match. One more thing very common in all five love stories is the way the guys planned the proposal. Who says that guys cannot be romantic? I would like to commend all five men for their romantic and detailed planning, remembering what their future life partner likes and dislikes. Keep up the good work guys! In one of the stories, I talk about the love of Radha and Krishna. Newlywed couples can take some inspiration from the eternal and blissful love of Radha and Krishna. The immortal and undying love of Radha and Krishna gives couples in a major relationship a lesson to follow throughout their married life. As all of you know, marriage is not only sharing happiness together, but sharing your sorrows and feeling each other’s pain. It is also knowing likes and dislikes of your partner. Your love should be so selfless that one must feel the pain and joy the other one is going through. Feeling each other suffering with the whole heart is what makes a relationship strong and inseparable. Let me end my love and relationship lesson here and talk about wedding planning advice. In this issue, we have covered several articles that gives some practical planning advice and more importantly some new trends in Indian weddings. In the article, “Say NO to Reds & Pinks,” we may be making a bold statement. For decades, we have seen Hindu brides in red or maroon outfits. And Hindu scripture has several explanations for wearing red outfit such as how the wedding is the start of a new phase of life and red signifies the beginning of a new phase of life as well as love, passion, and prosperity. Our scripture may have said not to wear black outfit, but it does not mention not wearing any other colors. So all of those brides planning their wedding, be bold and stand out by wearing a modern outfit in colors such as lavender, midnight blue, silver, mint green, ivory, and champagne gold. Let me end my last column of 2019 by reminding all of you to save the date for our 2020 MyShadi Bridal Expos: March 29, 2020 in Raleigh and April 5 2020 in Orlando. See you there! Before you know it, your best friend and your soulmate is on one knee asking you to marry him. For a moment you want to pinch yourself to be sure you are not dreaming. This was not a dream, but reality for Shivani when Aakash proposed to her at Curtis Hixon Park in Tampa. After this romantic proposal came the real work. Planning and picking the right wedding vendors so their big day went as smoothly as possible. Planning a wedding along with trying to juggle between work, looking

for a house, community service, and trying to have some sort of social life, seemed almost impossible. Luckily, from the very beginning Shivani and Aakash hired Umangi Patel &

Rikti Smart with Elite Dream Creations. Shivani recommends any bride planning a traditional Indian wedding to hire a wedding planner! They have creative ideas and clever ways of efficiently handling certain situations. Given most Indian weddings are large productions with several events and lots of people. Shivani and Aakash planned to invite more than 700 people for their celebration, so picking the right, and large enough, venue was a challenge. A venue in Orlando was ideal since Aakash lives in Tampa and Shivani in Viera. The couple wanted to be sure to find the right location, with hospitality and the right price tag. The Hilton Orlando offered everything they needed for their fairytale wedding.

The couple’s big day was November 9, 2019, and included pre-wedding events such as the Mehndi, Sangeet and Pithi.

The wedding ceremony was indoors. The Occasions by Shangri La decor team created a true vision in the ballroom. Upon entering, a beautiful floral ring of white, ivory, and hints of blush pink, hung over the mandap, with four hanging wisteria vines. The walls were covered with a beautiful golden drape and two massive Ultra HD screens projecting a live feed behind the mandap. Two white floral peacocks were resting at the front of the aisle, which was all white with floating candles lined across the side. When planning the reception, Shivani wanted it to feel like the first day she met Aakash at Tomorrowworld. The stage was designed and decorated exactly the same way to resemble the stage where the couple originally met. The Grand Finale of the wedding came when couple’s first dance performance began to the tune “I Like Me Better” by Lauv. Schamir, one of Aakash’s groomsmen, played the piano while Hanna Malik, Shivani’s friend, sang the song.

s love at first sight possible? Two strangers meet each other at a party and there’s an instant attraction, an electric spark, and suddenly they’ve found their match and never look back. Believe it or not, this is exactly what happened to Anu and Darshan. The two met eight years ago at a birthday party and instantly knew they were made for each other. Anu and Darshan also defied another misconception that long distance relationships do not work. Though Anu was living in Tennessee and Darshan in Texas, the couple managed to make it through their college days and even graduate school. If you think the beginning was romantic, imagine how the proposal enfolded for these two. Darshan planned the

surprise proposal with all the minute details. Darshan made arrangements for Anu to fly to Texas, order Torchy’s Taco (the couple’s favorite food) ready at the hotel, and took her to their final spot in Hermann Park in Houston. While there, he got down on one knee for the romantic proposal one month before Anu graduated pharmacy school. Soon after they set their wedding date for July 14, 2019, and immediately began planning. An Indian wedding without a wedding planner is almost impossible and especially when Anu and Darshan were planning five events and a 1,200 person 34

wedding! One early decision the couple made was to hire K.I Weddings as their planner. The real fun began with pre wedding events including the Mehndi, Vidhi and Garba. Anu and Darshan wanted to be sure their romance was reflected in their wedding events. What comes to your mind first when you hear the word “love?” For most Hindus, Radha-Krishna represent an epitome of love, selfless love. So Anu decided the centerpiece for the garba would be a murti of Radha-Krishna dancing surrounded by candles. The dandiya and the stage had two panels of large peacock feathers that Krishna wears on his head.

t has been said that when two people are destined to connect at heart, it doesn’t matter what they do, who they are, or where they live, they will surely be united! Sejal and Nirav are an embodiment of such a romantic union. Family friends are the reason the two were brought together. But after that, they took over the control of their destiny. They used texting and messaging as an ice-breaker. Then Nirav took the next bold step, asking Sejal out on a date. With Sejal from Georgia and Nirav from Arizona, the duo chose Washington, DC, for their first date. After several phone conversations, late-night texts and a few spontaneous meetups, Nirav decided to propose to Sejal. But he wanted it to be a romantic sur-

prise. They decided to go on a cruise to Cuba and Grand Cayman. On the last day of the cruise, Nirav decided to pop the question. In the evening Nirav suggested they go watch the sunset from the deck. There was a beautiful sunset over the vast expanse of the Caribbean. The clouds were hues of rich gold, blue and purple. Sejal was walking carefree in front of Nirav enjoying one of the most amazing sunsets, swinging her arms front and back. And suddenly Nirav grabbed Sejal’s hand and as she turned around, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him with the most gorgeous ring she had ever seen. It was beautiful and romantic. And, of course, Sejal said “yes.” After two years of dating, Sejal and Nirav decided to celebrate their love on September 7, 2019,

at the grand Westin Atlanta Perimeter North in Atlanta, Georgia. With both busy working as physicians and putting in long hours at work, they decided to hire Diya Desai of Pixel Events as their wedding planner. Wedding festivities began with a mehendi, pithi, and garba. Each event had its own unique theme, Moroccan themed décor for the mehendi and traditional Indian décor for Garba. The couple made a spectacular entry at their garba riding a bicycle-rickshaw.

For the first date, he took her stargazing where they spent hours talking and getting to know each other. Jeet knew then he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Neema. The couple hired DNS Events to help them with the vendor search and selection process. Neema and Jeet stayed involved with the entire process. The couple chose the Durham Convention Center

From recreating their first date to personalized menus and welcome signs at the events, they both added their personal touch wherever possible. Instead of a reception, the couple decided to host a fun Family Night Gala the night before the wedding. The theme for the Gala was elegant, romantic and regal. On October 12, 2019, Sonia and Ryan tied the knot in Florida. Both Sonia and Ryan are from Toronto, Canada, but they wanted a destination wedding in tropical Florida, a city that was witness to their love. They wanted a picturesque venue for their reception that captured the beauty of Florida, so they chose the Wyndham Grand Orlando Bonnet Creek. The wedding was a fairytale theme with a touch of elegance.

The couple chose a royal blue, champagne gold and white color scheme to go with their elegant theme. Their traditional Hindu wedding ceremony was held during the day outdoors, so they chose vibrant colors such as hot pink, gold and royal blue, with hot pink and white carnation flowers. For the reception, centerpieces were tall pilsner vases filled with white orchids, roses, and hydrangea flowers. All centerpieces included royal blue color

How to Store Your Wedding Lehenga

S

electing your dream bridal lehenga takes hours of shopping and perusing the endless options on Pinterest. Plus, you cannot forget the fortune you spent on it! Just like you took on the challenging task of selecting your wedding lehenga and keeping it safe until your wedding day, it requires the same amount of love and care after the wedding is over. Storing the wedding lehenga in the most effective way can be easy by following a simple process to maintain its quality. Here are some tips to help you keep your wedding lehenga looking as good as new. Photo Courtesy: Zamana Photo & Videography

Read the Care Label Before packing your lehenga away, be sure to check the care label carefully. If it’s a custom cre-

ation, check with the person who designed the outfit. Different fabrics and embroidery work require different care, so you want to be sure to relay this information to your dry-cleaner beforehand so they use the correct method.

Dry Clean Do not delay in getting your wedding outfit dry-cleaned after the wedding. Dry-cleaning the lehenga not only makes it spotless, but also helps to maintain its original form. Storing your wedding lehenga without dry-cleaning can lead to discoloration over time. Also, make sure to send the lehenga to a trusted and experienced dry-cleaner only.

Fold NOT Hang Photo Courtesy: Rob Hurth Photography

not be hung in the closet. Bridal outfits are heavy and the weight can pull the garment down, making the dress lose its shape over time. Always fold the lehenga to store it.

or embroidery. Mothballs or allnatural alternatives such as sachets filled with lavender or cedar work well. Always keep these in a pouch, and do not let them come in direct contact with your outfit.

Use a Special Box

If you wish to cherish it for years to come, do not pack the lehenga in any ordinary box or a cloth bag. Invest in a special box that is made from acid-free materials to protect your wedding lehenga.

cloth before placing in the box. Do not use tissue or paper as they can stain the dress.

Watch Out for Moths

Never use insecticides that can corrode your garment’s material

Store Carefully

The box in which you keep your lehenga should be stored away from extreme temperature and humidity. Wrap the lehenga in unbleached cotton or muslin

T

he mehndi ceremony at Indian weddings is not only a festive event, but it is also a ritual with auspicious and sentimental significance. Every Indian bride wants her wedding mehndi to be nothing less than perfect, whether it is the design or the color. The mehndi artist you choose for your wedding day can make or break your mehndi design and its outcome. Here are some tips to help you choose a bridal mehndi artist for your wedding.

Past Experience Bridal mehndi requires more time and precision, so it is best to be sure the artist has previous experience in working with brides. If you have a particular style of mehndi in mind, such as Rajasthani or Arabic design, be sure your selected artist has ex-

perience working in the style or with the design you want.

Request a Trial

Ask for References

One of the best ways to determine if your chosen mehndi artist will be right for you is to ask for references. Whether it is by reading online reviews, talking with family and friends, or reaching out to past clients, references can answer questions and confirm the artist’s style and quality.

Check Availability

As with all wedding vendors, it is especially important to check availability particularly during peak wedding season. Start with checking dates in advance to lock in your chosen mehndi artist.

Know What You Want

If you are not clear as to the type of design and detail you want, then you might be left disappointed or unimpressed. Do some research to find determine the types of designs your like as well as how detailed you want your mehndi. Instagram and Pinterest are great places to take a look at a wide variety of different bridal designs and shortlisting the ones you like. Having a clear idea in mind will help your

mehndi artist understand your expectations.

Much like with other wedding vendors, such as your makeup artist or hairstylist, it is best to seek a pre-wedding trial from your mehndi artist as well. This will help you gauge their speed and quality as well as be a good opportunity to do a patch test for the ingredients used in their henna paste.

How to Plan an Indian Wedding on a Budget

hanks to Yash Chopra and Karan Johar, Indian weddings are seen as largerthan-life celebrations. But big, fat Indian weddings come with a similarly big price tag. For couples who want to ease the load on the wallet, following a budget is the best route to go. Just because you want to have a budget wedding, it doesn’t mean you have to be frugal or cut corners! Here are some smart ways to cut costs at your wedding.

Host Pre-Wedding Events at Home If you are a couple who wants to splurge on the wedding and reception, then consider hosting preevents at home. Keep pre-events such as pujas and the grah shanti low key with just family and save money to spend on the big day!

Combine Events Some pre-wedding events can even be combined! Holding the mehndi and sangeet together can help you save not only on vendor costs, but also time.

Do It Yourself (DIY) Indian wedding dĂŠcor often comes with a hefty price tag. Instead of depending on vendors, get creative and take on some dĂŠcor aspects such as centerpieces, backdrops, welcome signs, photo booth props, and more - the list is endless! Gather friends and family to help you work on

DIY ideas. You can also source common decor items like candelabras, mason jars, etc. on your own at affordable prices.

Be Smart with the Menu

These days, elaborate wedding menus with a variety of cuisines is trending high. To be practical, how many dishes can your guests truly enjoy on one night? Try to keep each event catered to one type of cuisine and reduce the number of items. Your guests will still enjoy the food, while you save money and reduce food wastage.

Opt for Local Vendors

Whether out of state or even overseas, wedding vendors will charge more for their travel, transport and time. Stick with local vendors to not only support the local economy, but also your wallet.

Do Your Research

Research shows that most wedding venues charge extra for a weekend wedding, so it is best to choose a weekday wedding date. What’s more? Opt for an off-season date if you can to get the best deals and discounts during that time. Also, don’t forget to make use of sale seasons when shopping for your wedding. Cheap? No way! Smart? You bet!

Say NO to Reds & Pinks: Offbeat Wedding Lehenga Colors

W

edding trends are constantly changing. So why should new age, modern brides stick to standard wedding colors such as reds, maroons and pinks for their bridal wear? These days, brides are open to experimenting with their wedding outfits, especially when it comes to color choices. Consider jazzing up your wedding attire with unique shades that truly make you stand out. Try these off beat hues and colors for your wedding lehenga.

Midnight Blue For those in love with darker hues, this shade of blue is quite an unconventional yet stunning lehenga color. Midnight blue is a color that exudes confidence and importance, and it even represents the color of the sky on a moonlit night.

and grace. This shimmery and sparkly color will definitely make heads turn as you enter the wedding venue.

Mint Green

Silver Lavender Lavender is a symbol of love and purity. The color has also been dominating Indian bridal fashion these days. Many ace designers have chosen this delicate shade to create some amazing bridal ensembles. What’s more? Shades of lavender look good with both silver and gold embroidery.

Subtle and classy, the color silver is associated with glamor

Another favorite of wedding designers these days, this subtle color will look absolutely stunning especially if you have a daytime wedding. Sequins, thread work, gota patti, or shimmer, everything looks good on this shade.

Grey

Champagne Gold A champagne gold lehenga will make any bride look royal. After all, who doesn’t want to feel like gold on their wedding day? This muted shade is a great choice for unconventional brides.

Want to add an extra oomph to your bridal look? A grey lehenga is for those girls who dare to be unique and stand apart. If you feel an all-grey look is not for you, then you can break the monotony by adding shades of pink or blue to your outfit.

Ivory

Ivory is one of the biggest trends in current bridal wear. It is unconventional, yet classy and elegant. You can go for a monotone ivory lehenga adorned with floral lacework or sequins. Soft shades of pink also go really well with ivory.

Walk it Off W

By Chahna Tailor

elcome to wedding season! Planning a wedding can be super stressful, especially when you have to juggle a job, other responsibilities, and the pressures that come with the holiday season. An important thing to remember is that you must take productive breaks in order to keep your mind balanced and sharp, otherwise you run the risk of burning out. If you have been following along with my articles, you may know that I am partial towards yoga and meditation as a way to relax. 100

DECEMBER 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

It is commonly understood that meditation requires you to take a seat in one location butthe word meditation means to focus or concentrate on one thing at a time, regardless of what that is, such as silence, a sound, something you can look at, or even a specific word or intention. Meditation involves clearing the mind and not chasing the ever-persistent thoughts that come through the head so that you can become fully consumed by the object of your focus. It just happens that it can be easier to do when you are seated. But, sitting in one spot for a while may not be everyone’s cup of tea. So, why not combine meditation with an easy and enjoyable task? Did you know that there is a type of meditation called Walking Meditation? It is exactly as it sounds. A Walking Meditation is when you take a walk and you use all of your concentration to be present and absorb as much of the moment as possible. While walking, you focus on the feeling of the ground underneath your feet, the breeze, the sights, and the sounds. It is important to use this time to not allow triggering thoughts to come in and disturb the moment. Everything takes practice. Sometimes, we take a walk to work through our thoughts. These walking meditations are used for the opposite. Try to avoid thinking about anything that can stress you out or just take you out of the moment. DECEMBER 2019 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

of your annual income or net worth, whichever is less, but not to exceed $107,000.

Crowdfunding for Real Estate C r o wd f u n d i n g i s t h e n e w buzzword in real estate. The question is what is crowdfunding, who can invest, how much can you invest, how to qualify the investment and what are some of the risks involved? What is crowdfunding? Crowdfunding is the process by which promoter of a real estate project raises funds for a real estate investment project by promoting to investors. Traditionally, the promoter could only raise funds by soliciting a select group of institutional investors to raise capital for an investment. Today, by way of the JOBS act and several other regulations, a promoter can raise capital by soliciting a number of non-accredited and accredited investors. Who Can Invest? Investors for crowdfunding investments are categorized as accredited or non-accredited investors. To be considered an accredited investor according to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), at least one of the following conditions must apply to you: • Yo u m u s t h a v e e a r n e d a n individual income of more than $200,000 per year, or a joint income of $300,000, in each of the past two years and expect to reasonably maintain the same level of income. • You must have a net worth exceeding $1 million, either individually or jointly with a spouse. This figure excludes the equity in your primar y residence.

• You must be a general partner, executive officer, director, or a related combination thereof for the issuer of a security being offered. A non-accredited investor is any investor who does not meet the income or net worth requirements set out by the SEC.

How much can you invest The investment limits depends on your net worth and annual income: • If either your annual income or your net worth is less than $107,000, then during any 12-month period, you can invest up to the greater of either $2,200 or five percent of the lesser of your annual income or net worth. • If both your annual income and your net worth are equal to or more than $107,000 then, during any 12-month period, you can invest up to 10 percent

Qualifying the Investment There are several ways to qualif y and investment. The most important partis that the investment can only be made through an online platform of a broker-dealer or a funding portal. Companies may not offer crowdfunding investments to you directly, they must use a broker-dealer or funding portal. The broker-dealer or funding portal must be registered with the SEC and be a member of FINR A (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). To verify the registration status you may visit FINRA’s BrokerCheck. And to check if a funding portal is registered, go to FINRA’s Funding Portals Web page. You should always consider consulting with an at torney prior to making any investment decision. Risks W i t h a ny i nv e s t m e nt , t h e burden of due diligence lies with the investor regardless of the size of the investment. There are always risks involved with investments. Ability to resell your investment for the f irst yearand requirement to hold your investment for an indef inite period of time are two of the issues that need to be considered prior to making the investment. Please consult with your attorney and financial advisor prior to making any investment decisions.
