Assembly, addressed the crowd in Copenhagen, calling for solidarity, Xinhua news agency reported.
"We must fight our case at the UN, where it is certain that an overwhelming majority of countries will join in condemning American aggression against Greenland, and then we must appeal directly for support from the 70 per cent of Americans who are against conquering Greenland," he said.
"We must never give up," he added.
His remarks drew loud applause from the crowd, who responded in Greenlandic and Danish with chants affirming that "Greenland is not for sale".
Denmark's Foreign Minister has scolded the Trump administration for its "tone" in criticising
Denmark and Greenland, saying his country is investing more into Arctic security and remains open to more cooperation with the US.
Lars Lokke Rasmussen made the remarks in a video posted to social media after a visit to Greenland on Friday by US VicePresident, J.D. Vance.
"Many accusations and many allegations have been made. And of course we are open to criticism," Rasmussen said.
"But let me be completely honest: we do not appreciate the tone in which it is being delivered. This is not how you speak to your close allies. And I still consider Denmark and the US to be close allies."
In his video, Lokke Rasmussen reminded viewers of the 1951 defence agreement between Denmark and the US.
Since 1945, the American military presence in Greenland has decreased from thousands of soldiers over 17 bases and installations on the island, he said, to the remote Pituffik Space Base in the northwest with some 200 soldiers today.
The 1951 agreement "offers ample opportunity for the US to have a much stronger military presence in Greenland," the Foreign Minister said. "If that is what you wish, then let us discuss it."
Lokke Rasmussen added that Denmark has increased its own investment into Arctic defence.
In January, Denmark announced 14.6 billion Danish kroner (€1.9 billion) in financial commitments for Arctic security covering three new naval vessels, long-range drones and satellites.

Speaking at a press conference at Parliament House after visiting Mostyn, Albanese said that voters would "choose the way forward" at the election.
"We cannot decide the challenges that we will face, but we can determine how we respond," he added.
"Your vote has never been more important," he said.
Opinion polls have indicated that the election is set to be a tight contest.
The 62-year-old's Albanese-led government released its annual budget earlier this week, courting votes with surprise tax cuts and a
raft of other sweeteners.
Conservative leader Peter Dutton, 54, has pilloried Albanese, accusing him of "weak" leadership and stoking inflation through government largesse.
Dutton's signature policy is a $200 billion scheme to construct seven industrial-scale nuclear reactors, putting the brakes on the growth of renewable energy.
Polling shows economic concerns and the high cost of housing will dominate the contest.
Although inflation has eased under Albanese -- from 7.8 per cent in 2022 to 2.4 per cent in December -- many households are still struggling with high food, fuel, and power prices.

Assault on Colonel, son: Congress demands independent, high-level probe
After the March 13 incident near Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath faced a confrontation with the police while moving his vehicle, the Congress party has called for an independent, high-level investigation into the matter.
Colonel Bath and his son were beaten up by 12 policemen in civvies at a local dhaba in Patiala on the intervening night of March 13 and March 14.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC (All India Congress Committee) office in New Delhi, Col Rohit Chaudhary, Chairman of the AICC Ex-Servicemen
Department, and Alok Sharma, AICC Secretary and co-incharge for Punjab, demanded the dismissal and imprisonment of all police officers involved. They accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and Punjab's administration of attempting to cover up the incident.
The leaders pointed out that no FIR (first information report) was registered for several days following the event. They also alleged that the Dhaba owner at the scene was pressured into filing an FIR against unknown individuals to protect the actual culprits.
They claimed the administration worked to shield the policemen implicated.
According to the Congress leaders, the assault on an Army Colonel highlights the worsening law and order situation in Punjab under the Aam Aadmi Party government. They demanded that the Patiala SSP be named in the
FIR for allegedly protecting the guilty officers and called for the inclusion of senior army officials in the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Expressing concern over the state's rampant drug problem, they criticised the terror caused by the drug mafia and the misconduct of the police. They accused the Aam Aadmi Party of contributing to Punjab's decline. Additionally, they urged the Army Chief to seek the President's intervention to prevent further incidents targeting armed forces personnel.
The Congress leaders also advocated for the establishment of an 'Ex-servicemen Commission' with judicial powers to address such cases and resolve soldiers' grievances. They proposed enhanced security measures for soldiers, exservicemen, and their families, along with legislation to prevent mistreatment by government agencies, similar to laws in other countries.

In his address, the L-G extended his felicitations to the organisers, participating filmmakers, and everyone associated with the short film festival dedicated to promoting local talents.

‘Prachand Prahaar’, Army’s tri-service multidomain warfare exercise in Arunachal Pradesh
New Delhi, March 27 (IANS) In a powerful demonstration of joint operational capability, the Indian Army on Thursday conducted a highly effective and important ‘Integrated Multi-Domain Exercise’.
This Tri-Service Integrated Multi-Domain Warfare Exercise was held in the Eastern Theatre,
deep in the high-altitude terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.
According to the officials, the exercise, named 'Exercise Prachand Prahaar', was held from March 25 to 27. The exercise brought together the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and other elements of the Indian Armed Forces in a synergised combat drill designed to simulate future warfare.

Maha ministers slam Kunal Kamra’s ‘Hum Honge Kangaal’ video, warns of legal action
New Delhi, March 26 (IANS)
Maharashtra Minister Yogesh Ramdas Kadam has strongly condemned comedian Kunal Kamra’s recent video after the controversial "gaddar" one that sparked a furore in political circles. The comedian came out with another video titled "Hum Honge Kangaal", interspersed with footage of the recent destruction of the studio by Shiv Sena workers. Kadam stated that making fun of Hindu deities, disrespecting the Supreme Court, and mocking state leaders during comedy shows is unacceptable in Maharashtra. He warned that such actions would not be tolerated and would lead to strict legal actions. "It is not acceptable to repeatedly insult Hindu deities in your comedy shows, disrespect
the Honorable Supreme Court, or insult state leaders. If Kamra calls this comedy, it will not be tolerated in Maharashtra.
"Just as a song created controversy, if he intentionally targets someone in a second song or makes fun of the government or administration, legal action will be taken. He is not above the law, not above the Supreme Court, and not above the government. Therefore, actions will be taken according to the law," he said.
Kunal Kamra has been under fire for his controversial remarks, especially in his recent video, which allegedly targeted Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande also responded to Kamra's statements, saying, "Kunal Kamra is not refraining from his actions and is repeatedly displaying his perverted mentality. We will handle this matter legally, through the police, and in every possible way. We will give a strong response to his actions."
India set to become the world’s consumption capital
New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) India is on track to become the global consumption capital, outpacing major economies, according to a new report.
The consumption in India accounts for 56 per cent of the country’s GDP and is growing at the fastest rate in the world.
A report by Angel One and Iconic Asset showed that over the next decade, India’s consumption is projected to double by 2034.
One of the key drivers of rising consumption is the increasing number of nuclear families.
Household growth in the country is outpacing population growth, leading to a surge in spending.
different incarnations of the Goddess Durga. The nine-day festival honors the nine forms of Goddess Durga. The devotees observe special prayers, rituals, and fasts throughout the festival. On the second day, the Goddess Durga is worshipped as Brahmacharini, the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati. Devotees in large numbers thronged temples all over the country. People started lining up outside temples in the morning.
Additionally, India is set to lead the global workforce expansion, further boosting economic activity.
The report also highlights India’s impressive savings potential.
Between 1997 and 2023, the total savings in the country amounted to $12 trillion.
Over the next 25 years, this figure is expected to make a ten-fold jump to $103 trillion by 2047. This rise in savings will unlock significant opportunities for increased spending and economic growth.
Recent tax cuts announced in the
Union Budget will also contribute to rising consumption. The report estimates that these tax reductions will free up Rs 1 lakh crore, leading to an additional Rs 3.3 lakh crore in spending, which could boost India’s GDP by 1 per cent.
India is expected to follow a global trend where discretionary spending, such as electronics, apparel, accessories (including jewellery), and experiences, grows faster than essential spending.
The report notes that during periods of economic expansion, both the US and China saw discretionary consumption outpace basic spending, and India is likely to follow the same pattern.
"Consumption spend in the US increased 10X during the phase of a strong rise in per capita income. India can witness similar growth in consumption as per capita income rises," the report added. Despite the rise of modern retail, 92 per cent of India’s retail trade still happens through small neighbourhood Kirana stores. This presents a huge opportunity for organised retail to expand and capture a larger market share, the report said.
The report also highlights the role of India’s young population in driving consumption. India has more Gen Zers than the entire population of the United States. By 2035, every second rupee spent in India will come from a Gen Zer, further fueling the country’s consumption boom.

Two in critical condition after shooting, stabbing attack on Gold Coast
Sydney, March 31 (IANS) Police in Australia are searching for a man who allegedly shot one man and stabbed another, leaving both with life-threatening injuries.
The police service in the state of Queensland said that a 30-yearold man fled the scene after allegedly shooting one neighbour and stabbing another during a dispute in the early hours of Monday morning, Xinhua news agency reported.
Police said that emergency services responded to a disturbance at an address in Surfers Paradise -- 70 km southeast of Brisbane on Queensland's Gold Coast -- just before 2 a.m. local time.
A 21-year-old man was found at the scene with a gunshot wound to his stomach and stab wounds to his back, and a 44-year-old male was found with stab wounds to his head, neck and leg. Both men were treated at the scene for life-threatening injuries before being taken to a nearby hospital in a critical but stable condition.
Police located a firearm at the scene and have launched a search

Queensland Police Service Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Miles told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio that police have a "fair idea" of who they are looking for.
"The appeal is for that gentleman to give himself up. This isn't going away, this is attempted murder," he said. "We just need you to come in and give yourself up and we'll deal with you from there on in."
He said that the incident occurred in a common area after the 44-year-old and 21-year-old males intervened in a disturbance in a neighbouring unit.
PM candidates disrupted by protesters on first
day of election campaign
Canberra, March 29 (IANS)
Australia's two candidates for Prime Minister have spent the first day of the general election campaign in the battleground state of Queensland where they were both disrupted by protesters.
Incumbent PM Anthony Albanese, leader of the governing Labor Party, and Peter Dutton, leader of the opposition Coalition,
both made multiple stops in Queensland on Saturday at the start of a five-week campaign before the election on May 3.
Despite the leaders' events being carefully planned and subject to strict security, both Albanese and Dutton faced protesters on Saturday, reports Xinhua news agency.
A Labor event in Brisbane focused on the party's plan to boost spending on healthcare was interrupted when an audience member accosted Albanese with questions about the impact of immigration on healthcare and housing pressure before he was escorted away by security.
Hours later, an anti-coal and gas protester from a climate activist
group interrupted Dutton's first official appearance of the day at a Brisbane brewery.
The female protester carried a sign carrying the message "no new gas or nuclear" referring to Dutton's proposal to build nuclear power plants.
It was the first of two disruptions of the day for Dutton, whose second event of the day in Brisbane was again interrupted by a protester from the same climate action group. Also campaigning in Brisbane on Saturday was Adam Bandt, leader of the GreensAustralia's third-largest political party. The presence of the three leaders on the first day of the campaign confirms the status of Brisbane - and Queensland - as a key battleground in the election.

Canberra, March 20 (IANS)
Record-breaking heat, mass coral bleaching, and biodiversity loss continue to threaten Australia's ecosystems, according to the latest Australia's Environment Report published on Thursday. The report, produced annually by the Australian National University (ANU) and the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) after analysing extensive satellite, station, and field data, said Australia's environment showed a slight improvement in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of above-average conditions.
However, Australia experienced its second-hottest year on record after 2019, with sea surface temperatures reaching all-time highs, which led to the fifth mass bleaching event in the Great Barrier Reef in under a decade and severe bleaching in Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef, the report said.
Habitat destruction, invasive species, and climate change continue to endanger native ecosystems. While 41 species were added to the threatened species list in 2024, down from a record 130 in 2023, it remains well above the long-term average of 25 per year, it said.
The Threatened Species Index shows an average 58 per cent decline in threatened species populations since 2000. However, report co-author Tayla Lawrie from the TERN noted a slight recent improvement, suggesting possible stabilisation for some
Govt unveils federal budget ahead of election
Canberra, March 25 (IANS) The Australian Labor government unveiled the federal budget on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming election, focusing on cost-ofliving relief and economic growth.
Delivering his budget speech to the parliament, Treasurer Jim Chalmers outlined five key priorities of the 2025-26 budget: easing cost-of-living pressures, strengthening medicare, expanding housing, investing in education, and boosting economic resilience.
Chalmers emphasised the government's commitment to supporting Australians, with new tax cuts for all taxpayers rolling out through 2026-27, additional energy bill relief extending to the end of 2025, and further reductions in student debt and medicine costs.
Healthcare remains a central focus, with increased investment in Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, hospitals, and workforce development, along with targeted improvements in women's healthcare, Chalmers said.
The 2025-26 budget also aims to tackle the housing crisis by expanding construction efforts and workforce capacity, he said,
adding in education, funding will go toward early learning, schools, universities, and permanent free technical and further education to enhance skills and opportunities. To drive economic growth, the government is investing in small businesses, infrastructure, and initiatives under the 'Future Made in Australia' strategy to support domestic industries and regional development, Chalmers said.
He said Australia's economy is set to grow from 1.5 per cent this year to 2.5 per cent by 2026-27, driven by a rebound in private sector demand, Xinhua news agency reported.
Treasury forecasts lower peak unemployment at 4.25 percent, stronger job and wage growth, and faster-than-expected inflation easing. With the economy stabilizing, a "soft landing" looks increasingly likely, Chalmers said. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) earlier on Tuesday, highlighted the government's commitment to building a stronger economy, reinforcing Medicare, and supporting Australians struggling with rising living costs. However, Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor said in an ABC interview that the Albanese government's budget is for "the next five weeks, not for the next five years" and they are not "a genuine tax cut."
Extreme heat set to double heart disease burden in Australia by 2050
species, Xinhua news agency reported.
In 2024, Australia's environmental score reached 7.7 out of 10, a significant recovery from the disaster years of 2019 and 2020, when scores ranged from 0.4 to 2 after the Black Summer bushfires damaged the country's biodiversity, the report showed. Despite favourable rainfall improving vegetation and soil health, ANU Prof. Albert Van Dijk, lead author of the report, warns the environmental improvements of the last four years do not negate long-term concerns.
As Australia's per capita greenhouse gas emissions remain among the highest in the world, Professor Van Dijk calls for investment in renewable energy, stronger land management policies, and enhanced biodiversity conservation efforts.
Canberra, March 17 (IANS)
Extreme heat is a major contributor to heart disease in Australia, responsible for 7.3 per cent of the total cardiovascular disease burden, a new study said on Monday.
Between 2003 and 2018, hot weather accounted for nearly 50,000 years of healthy life lost annually, with South Australia experiencing the highest impact and the Northern Territory the lowest, according to the study funded by the Adelaide University China Fee Scholarships and the Australian Research Council Discovery Program.
Under future climate scenarios, the burden of cardiovascular disease is expected to rise steadily. By the 2050s, under a high-emissions scenario, it is projected to more than double compared to the baseline, with the Northern Territory
experiencing the most significant increase, said the study published in the European Heart Journal. "When the weather is hot, our hearts have to work harder to help us cool down. This added pressure can be dangerous, especially for people with cardiovascular disease," said Bi Peng, the research lead from the University of Adelaide Public Health and Environmental Medicine. "Many of us have experienced how a warming climate can make us feel unwell, particularly during longer periods of extreme heat," Bi said, adding the exact number of people living with severe heart disease or dying prematurely due to rising temperatures remains uncertain. It is crucial to understand how this burden will grow in the future. Using disability-adjusted life years to measure lost healthy years due to illness or death, the study underscores the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies, including urban cooling initiatives, public health campaigns, and emergency response measures in hot days, Xinhua news agency reported.
Fugitive Mehul Choksi living in Belgium, plans to move to Switzerland for treatment
New Delhi, March 23 (IANS)
Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, who is wanted in India for his alleged involvement in a Rs 13,500-crore bank loan fraud, was previously believed to be residing in Antigua and Barbuda before reportedly travelling and residing in Antwerp, Belgium, with his wife, Preeti Choksi, after obtaining a residency card, according to a media report.
Indian authorities have since urged Belgium to initiate his extradition to India, as per the Associated Times, a Caribbeanfocused outlet.
However, Indian authorities have not yet confirmed the report.
Mehul Choksi's wife, Preeti, is a Belgian citizen.
Mehul Choksi is currently residing in Antwerp, Belgium, with his wife, Preeti Choksi, after securing an 'F Residency Card' in the country, as reported by a media outlet.
According to the report, Choksi allegedly used fabricated and misleading documentation to obtain Belgian residency in an effort to avoid extradition to India.
Sources cited in the report claim that Choksi submitted "false declarations" and "forged documents" to Belgian authorities, while concealing his Indian and Antiguan citizenship during the application process.
The report also suggests that Choksi is planning to move to Switzerland for medical treatment at a renowned cancer hospital.
Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused of siphoning off Rs 13,500 crore from the state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) using fraudulent letters of undertaking.
Nirav Modi, currently incarcerated in a London jail, is contesting his extradition to India after facing repeated bail denials in court.
Choksi went missing from Antigua in May 2021 but was later traced and returned to the country.
In December 2024, a special court in Mumbai authorised the monetisation of properties
valued at Rs 2,565.9 crore, which were seized by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) since 2018 as part of its money laundering investigation against fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi in the alleged Punjab National Bank fraud case.
The court's ruling followed an application by the victim banks, Punjab National Bank and ICICI Bank, supported by the ED.
As a result, the transfer of assets has commenced, with properties worth over Rs 125 crore -including flats in Mumbai and two factories in SEEPZ, Andheri -- being handed over to the liquidator of Choksi's Gitanjali Gems Ltd.
Charges against Choksi include criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating and dishonesty including delivery of property, corruption, and money laundering.
In December 2024, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Parliament that properties worth more than Rs 22,000 crore had been restored or sold off to pay back debts of wanted individuals like Choksi.

Dhaka, March 24 (IANS) The United Nations Children's Agency has expressed grave concern about the alarming rise in incidents of sexual violence against children, especially girls, in Bangladesh over the last weeks under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Representative to Bangladesh Rana Flowers stated that she is "profoundly horrified" by the recent surge in horrific cases of child rape and sexual violence, including in places meant to protect and nurture children, like educational institutions.
In an official statement issued by (UNICEF) on Sunday, the agency stated that a distressing number of children have reportedly fallen victim to rape and murder in recent months.
The agency's monitoring revealed that from January 2025 to March 16, media and local human rights organisations recorded approximately 50 cases of child rape.
The trend seems to be getting even more worrisome -- only on March 10 there were seven
children killed, and six confirmed cases of violence. These statistics are more than just numbers; they represent shattered lives, profound trauma for survivors, and unimaginable grief for families and communities.
"Our hearts are especially heavy with the tragic death of the eightyear-old child from Magura a few days ago. Her death serves as a devastating reminder of how children, especially girls, are being subjected to grave violations of their fundamental rights and safety. Sadly, this young girl's death is merely one of many horrifying acts against children," said UN representative Rana Flowers.
Slamming the Yunus administration, Flowers stated that these incidents have sparked deep concern across the South Asian nation, raising urgent questions about the safety and protection of children and adolescents, especially in the hands of people they trust at home and in schools.
"To create a society where every child can grow up free from fear and violence, the interim government and all stakeholders need to take immediate and decisive actions to strengthen and invest in child protection systems," she said.
"The Interim Government and Law Enforcement should ensure immediate action and accountability for all reported
Indian-origin woman kills son on Disneyland trip, arrested
New Delhi/New York, March 23 (IANS) An Indian-origin woman has been arrested on the charges of killing her 11-year-old son after a three-day vacation at Disney land in California.
The accused identified as Saritha Ramaraju, 48, killed the boy by slitting his throat, the Santa Ana Police Department said in a statement.
"On Wednesday, we received a call from a woman who reported that she had stabbed and killed her son in a room at the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Santa Ana and ingested an unknown substance," Santa Ana Police said in a statement.
Police officers rushed to the spot and found the 11-year-old boy dead in a hotel room surrounded by Disneyland souvenirs.
cases of violence against children through strengthened investigation, prosecution, and judicial processes," she further added.
Expressing concern about the lack of safety and security for children in the country, Rana Flowers stated that the unsafe environment contributes to the persistence of child marriage and other forms of violence. She said that every child has the right to grow up in a safe and protective environment at home and in public spaces. Child survivors must be shielded from further trauma, especially during investigations and legal proceedings.
"Survivors deserve dignity, healing, and justice. It is essential to respect their right to privacy -- by authorities, media, law enforcement, the judiciary, and the public -- to support their recovery. For child victims, justice must be swift and uncompromising, ensuring accountability for those responsible," Rana Flowers added.
The UNICEF representative also stated that the agency remains steadfast in its commitment to child rights and protection and is ready to support the interim government led by Yunus in strengthening child protection systems and ensuring a safer Bangladesh for all children.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene while Ramaraju was treated at a hospital. She was discharged from the medical facility on Thursday and arrested. She has been booked for murder, child endangerment, torture, and aggravated mayhem. She could face 26 years of prison if found guilty.
However, Ramaraju did not enter a plea during her indictment.
The boy was killed several hours before Ramaraju called and informed the Santa Ana Police, authorities said.
A large kitchen knife used for the crime has been seized.
Ramaraju, who divorced her husband in 2018, killed her son on March 19, the day she had to give him back to his father, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said: "The safest place for a child should be in their parents' arms. Instead of wrapping her arms around her son in love, she slit his throat and in the cruelest twist of fate removed him from the very world she brought him into."
"The life of a child should not hang in the balance between two parents whose anger for each other outweighs their love for their child," Spitzer said.
Indian-American student alleges ‘Hinduphobia’ at US university after row over Hinduism course
Houston, March 28 (IANS) An Indian-American student and activist has said said the content of the course on Hinduism offered by the the University of Houston is "Hinduphobic" and "distorting India's political landscape".
According to an Indian tv channel report, the university has said it is reviewing the concerns raised by the student named Vasant Bhatt.
The University of Houston's Lived Hindu Religion course is offered to the students online, with video lectures delivered by Professor Aaron Michael Ullrey weekly.
Bhatt, a political science major at the university, has lodged a complain before the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences under which this course is being offered.
According to the student, Professor Ullrey reportedly said that Hinduism was not an "ancient, lived tradition", but a "political tool" weaponised by "Hindu nationalists, and a system of oppression against minorities".
According to the report, Bhatt shared a quote from the syllabus
that stated that the word 'Hindu' is recent and not found in scriptures.
"Hindutva", or "Hindu-ness", is a term that Hindu nationalists, those who believe Hinduism should be the official religion of India, use to designate their religion and denigrate others, namely Islam," Bhatt quoted the syllabus according to the report.
The development comes a day after India rejected the latest report by the the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), calling the findings as "biased and politically motivated assessments".
"We have seen the recently released 2025 Annual Report of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which once again continues its pattern of issuing biased and politically motivated assessments. The USCIRF's persistent attempts to misrepresent isolated incidents and cast aspersions on India's vibrant multicultural society reflect a deliberate agenda rather than a genuine concern for religious freedom," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
South Korea: PM Han Duck-soo’s impeacment dismissed over Martial Law
Seoul, March 24 (IANS) South Korea's Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Han Duck-soo's impeachment on Monday, reinstating him as acting president in the ongoing turmoil over suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief imposition of martial law.
The court's eight justices dismissed Han's impeachment in a 5-1 vote. Two justices voted to reject the impeachment motion entirely.
The ruling came three months after the National Assembly impeached the Prime Minister and then acting president over his alleged role in Yoon's December 3 declaration of martial law, among other reasons, reports Yonhap news agency.
Four of the five justices who voted to dismiss Han's impeachment acknowledged there were violations of the Constitution and
the law in his decision to defer the appointment of additional justices to the court but noted it did not justify his removal from office.
As the only justice to uphold the impeachment, however, Justice Chung Kye-sun said the violations were "serious" enough to warrant his dismissal.
She also pointed to "serious" violations of relevant laws in Han's refusal to promptly seek candidate recommendations for a permanent special counsel to investigate insurrection charges against Yoon.
The six justices who voted to either dismiss or uphold the impeachment said there was no evidence to back the National Assembly's accusations that Han took proactive action to give legitimacy to Yoon's martial law bid, such as by convening a Cabinet meeting ahead of its declaration.
Meanwhile, all but two justices sided with the National Assembly in ruling that the quorum to impeach Han was a minimum of 151 out of 300 lawmakers, which is applied to a prime minister, not 200, as applied to a president.
The two justices who differed said the quorum for a president should have been applied, given that Han was performing the president's role in the wake of Yoon's impeachment less than two weeks earlier, and voted to reject the impeachment motion entirely.
The National Assembly's impeachment motion also listed charges that Han attempted to form a joint governance system with then-ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon and refused to promulgate two special counsel bills targeting Yoon and First Lady Kim Keon Hee. The court dismissed those accusations.
The prime minister arrived at his office minutes after the verdict was announced.
"I thank the Constitutional Court for its wise decision," he told reporters. "I will start by dealing with urgent issues first."
Monday's ruling was closely watched as a test of the court's views on charges raised against Yoon in his impeachment trial.
The court has yet to announce the date of its ruling on Yoon's case, though many observers anticipate it could come later in the week.
The Propaganda Apparatus: ISPR and the military narrative building in Pakistan
New Delhi, March 23 (IANS)
On 11th March 2025, Baloch insurgents executed a coordinated attack, culminating in the hijacking of the Jaffar Express train in the remote Bolan district of Balochistan, which was carrying 440 passengers, mainly off-duty Pakistan Army personnel. The incident, one of the most significant displays of insurgent violence in recent memory, resulted in considerable casualties.
However, an extensive information blackout ensued as the events unfolded. This suppression of information was imposed by Pakistan’s military establishment, through its InterServices Public Relations (ISPR), which exerts strict control over the dissemination of narratives. The ISPR selectively released curated information via a number of mainstream television channels, effectively maintaining an informational void.
This incident has once again highlighted the powerful role of the ISPR as the primary conduit for state-sanctioned narrative construction, systematically shaping public perception of the armed forces by controlling the information environment.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate, established in 1949, serves as
the central public relations body of the Pakistani Armed Forces. Managed by a combined team of military personnel and civilian officials, it operates under the administrative oversight of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Secretariat (JCSS).
The Directorate is led by the Director General (DG), formerly known as the Executive Officer, who acts as the chief military spokesperson for the nation.
In 2024, the position of DG ISPR was upgraded to a threestar Lieutenant General rank, previously a two-star post.
The DG-ISPR reports directly to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and the respective service chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, while also providing situational briefings to the Coast Guard chief and the Marine Commandant when necessary.
Although officially a joint military directorate, the ISPR has been predominantly influenced by the Pakistan Army, with a naval officer only having held its leadership once, between 1952 and 1965, which remains one of the longest tenures in its history.
The current Director General, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, is the 22nd individual to hold the position of DG ISPR and the first serving Lieutenant General to do so.
He is assisted by two Major General-ranked officers, who are responsible for managing foreign

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on official visits to Thailand and Sri Lanka from April 03 to April 06, further reaffirming India's commitment to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy, 'Act East' policy, and 'MAHASAGAR' and vision of the Indo-Pacific.
At the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, PM Modi will visit Bangkok from April 03-04 to participate in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit. The summit, scheduled for April 04, will be hosted by Thailand, the current BIMSTEC Chair. This will mark PM Modi's third visit to Thailand.
This would also be the first in-person meeting of BIMSTEC Leaders since the 4th BIMSTEC Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2018. The last summit, the 5th BIMSTEC Summit, was held virtually in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in March 2022.
or strategic communications and domestic media affairs. Additionally, three Deputy Director Generals (DDGs) from the three branches of the armed forces oversee communication and media matters related to their respective services.
In his book The Military and Public Relations – Issues, Strategies, and Challenges (2012), John Adache asserts that the ISPR functions as a crucial intermediary between the military, the media, and the public. As Adache describes, its primary objective is “to secure national support for the Armed Forces” while protecting the military from negative narratives, whether from domestic or international sources. In this role, through its meticulously managed communication strategies, the ISPR acts as a central element in the state's information control and perception management framework. For example, the ISPR demonstrated its role as a key tool in promoting a promilitary narrative by actively spreading misinformation, ahead of the Pakistan Army's operational response to the Bolan train hijacking crisis. Pakistan's television channels, functioning as media outlets influenced by the military, broadcasted manipulated video footage of military helicopters, allegedly provided by the ISPR, which sought to present these as genuine visuals of the military operation.
Announcing the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, "The leaders are expected to deliberate on ways and means to infuse greater momentum to
BIMSTEC cooperation during the Summit."
The theme for the 6th summit is "BIMSTEC -- Prosperous, Resilient and Open." The MEA highlighted that discussions will focus on institutional and capacity-building measures to strengthen collaboration within the BIMSTEC framework.
"India has been taking a number of initiatives in BIMSTEC to strengthen regional cooperation and partnership, including in enhancing security; facilitating trade and investment; establishing physical, maritime, and digital connectivity; collaborating in food, energy, climate, and human security; promoting capacity building and skill development; and enhancing people-to-people ties," the statement read.
On the bilateral front, PM Modi will hold a meeting with Prime Minister Shinawatra on April 03 to review existing cooperation and discuss the roadmap for future partnerships between the two countries. India and Thailand share strong civilisational bonds, with deep-rooted cultural, linguistic, and religious ties, further strengthened by their maritime proximity.
Following his Thailand visit, PM Modi will travel to Sri Lanka on a State Visit from April 04-06 at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Danish leaders reject US claims on Greenland, reaffirm sovereignty
Nuuk (Greenland), March 28 (IANS) Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reaffirmed that Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, rejecting recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said the US would "go as far as they have to" to acquire the island. "Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. That is not going to change," Frederiksen told Danish media on Thursday.
"Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people," she added.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also criticised what he called a "false narrative" in US political circles suggesting Greenland is eager to become American, Xinhua news agency reported.
Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described Trump's
rhetoric as a "veiled threat" and "deeply inappropriate," warning that the US was escalating tensions.
"It is the people of Greenland who determine Greenland's future," he said.
Meanwhile, a demonstration has been planned in front of the US Embassy in Copenhagen on Saturday to protest what organisers call "unwanted pressure" from Washington. The White House announced on Tuesday that Vice-President J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, will visit Pituffik Space Base on Friday to meet US troops and review the security situation.
Earlier plans for Usha Vance to attend cultural events in Nuuk and Sisimiut, including a dog sled race, have been cancelled.
Greenland had been a Danish colony until 1953 when it became an integral part of Denmark.
In 1979, Greenland achieved home rule, gaining greater self-governance while Denmark retained authority over its foreign and defence policy.

Federal Budget 2025: Catalyzing growth across key sectors
The Australian Federal Budget for 2025-26, presented by Treasurer Jim Chalmers, lays out a comprehensive roadmap to stimulate economic growth and address urgent national challenges. Despite the government projecting a deficit of $27.6 billion for 2024-25, with an anticipated increase to $42.1 billion in 2025-26, the budget places a strong emphasis on strategic investments aimed at supporting key sectors such as healthcare, housing, infrastructure, and environmental protection. These investments are designed to lay a foundation for longterm growth and sustainability, while also addressing immediate concerns like costof-living pressures and the need for more affordable services. In the healthcare sector, the budget allocates substantial funding to improve services and enhance accessibility for Australians. Among the most notable provisions are increased access to bulk billing, aimed at reducing out-of-pocket costs for essential medical services, and reductions in the cost of medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). These measures are particularly timely as healthcare affordability remains a top concern for many households across the country.
The government’s focus on improving the affordability and availability of medical services and medications is aimed at easing the financial burden on families and ensuring that all Australians have access to necessary care, regardless of their financial situation. This commitment to expanding healthcare services directly addresses the growing need for more robust support systems in a time of rising living costs and an aging population.
The budget also provides a significant boost to the real estate and construction sectors, which have long struggled with supply shortages and escalating housing costs. To address these challenges, the government has introduced several housing initiatives, including subsidies aimed at increasing housing supply and improving affordability for first-time buyers and renters. However, the budget acknowledges that these efforts must be complemented by measures to boost productivity within the construction industry, which has faced labor shortages and inefficiencies in recent years. Without improvements in construction productivity and a more streamlined regulatory framework, there is a risk that the housing supply will
continue to fall behind demand, potentially exacerbating rising house prices. Therefore, the success of these initiatives will hinge on the government’s ability to create an environment conducive to faster and more efficient construction practices, while also addressing the need for skilled labour in the sector.
Infrastructure development is another key area of focus in the 2025-26 budget, with a commitment of $17.1 billion over the next decade for a range of projects, primarily in road and rail development. These infrastructure investments are intended to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and foster economic growth across both urban and regional areas. By improving transportation networks, the government aims to facilitate the efficient movement of goods and people, which will, in turn, support business operations and contribute to a more productive economy. Moreover, infrastructure projects play a vital role in job creation, providing employment opportunities across multiple sectors, and offering a pathway to enhanced productivity. The importance of infrastructure in driving economic activity cannot be overstated, as it underpins many aspects of daily life and commerce in Australia.
Environmental protection is also a central theme in the budget, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding Australia’s natural resources for future generations. The 2025-26 budget includes an allocation of $262 million for environmental initiatives, aimed at preserving biodiversity, mitigating the effects of climate change, and promoting sustainable practices. These funds will be directed toward projects that protect Australia's unique ecosystems, support eco-tourism, and develop solutions for more sustainable land and water management practices. The investment in environmental protection also seeks to position Australia as a global leader in sustainability, responding to growing public demand for stronger climate policies. In addition, these efforts will provide significant economic opportunities in the ecotourism and renewable energy sectors, which are becoming increasingly important to Australia’s economic diversification strategy. While the budget introduces measures to support these sectors, it also highlights the nation’s ongoing fiscal challenges, with projections of continued budget deficits.
Strengthening ties: Australia’s post-election vision for a deeper partnership with India
As Australia transitions from the 2025 federal elections, the newly elected government has a clear opportunity to deepen and diversify its relationship with India. Over the years, the partnership between the two nations has evolved into a strong, multifaceted alliance, characterized by shared democratic principles, mutual economic benefits, and a joint vision for regional stability in the Indo-Pacific. With growing trade, enhanced defense collaboration, and cultural exchange, the newly formed government is expected to build on these existing strengths to solidify an even more robust bilateral partnership.
Trade and investment: Charting the course for deeper economic engagement
One of the most significant areas where Australia and India are expected to strengthen their ties is in trade and investment. Economic cooperation between the two nations has already seen substantial growth, with both countries recognizing the immense potential of further collaboration. In the lead-up to the elections, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese presented a forward-thinking roadmap outlining 50 opportunities aimed at advancing trade and investment relations through the Australia-India Economic Strategy. This initiative also included the creation of the Australia-India Trade and Investment Accelerator Fund, designed to stimulate greater commercial partnerships. The new government is set to build upon this strategy, fostering an environment conducive to even greater trade flows and investment exchanges.
At the core of these economic efforts is the ongoing negotiation of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which promises to deepen the economic ties between the two countries. After multiple rounds of negotiations, both the Australian and Indian governments have expressed a firm commitment to finalizing the deal. Once concluded, the agreement will provide a significant boost to bilateral trade by eliminating tariffs, simplifying regulatory frameworks, and improving market access. The upcoming round of talks, slated for November 2025 in India, will present a critical opportunity for the new administration to expedite negotiations and secure an agreement favorable to both sides. The deal could open doors for Australian companies seeking access to India’s fast-growing economy, while also providing Indian businesses with enhanced access to Australian markets, particularly in sectors such as technology, education, energy, and natural resources.
Business leaders in both countries have expressed strong
support for expanding trade, with organizations such as the Australia India Business Council (AIBC) actively championing the cause. Australian businesses are increasingly viewing India as a key market for long-term investment opportunities. Sectors such as renewable energy, agribusiness, and technology are expected to benefit immensely from closer collaboration. Furthermore, Australia’s abundant reserves of critical minerals, including lithium and rare earth elements, are of great interest to India, which is eager to secure essential resources for its burgeoning electric vehicle and renewable energy industries. Reports suggest that Indian stateowned enterprises are already negotiating stakes in Australian lithium projects, highlighting the growing depth of economic collaboration that aligns with global sustainability efforts. Security and defense: A strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific In addition to economic cooperation, the strategic aspect of the Australia-India relationship remains a central focus. Since the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2020, both nations have worked to strengthen defense cooperation and align their security strategies. As geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific intensify, Australia and India share a common interest in ensuring that the regional order remains based on rules and diplomacy. Their partnership in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), which also includes Japan and the United States, reflects this shared commitment to regional security.
The incoming Australian government is expected to further intensify defense collaboration with India, focusing on military-to-military engagement, maritime security, and intelligence sharing. Both countries see the Indo-Pacific region as strategically vital, and their defense cooperation has become increasingly important in countering potential security threats. With India actively modernizing its defense capabilities, Australia has a unique opportunity to deepen its military relationship with India, particularly in the fields of joint exercises, defense technology, and strategic partnerships.
Military exercises like AUSINDEX and Malabar, which feature joint drills between Australian and Indian forces, have demonstrated the growing interoperability of the two nations’ armed forces. These exercises play a key role in improving the operational readiness and effectiveness of both countries’ militaries.
As India continues to modernize its defense industry, there will be additional opportunities for collaboration in defense manufacturing and supply chain
resilience. The new government is likely to explore avenues for Australia to contribute to India’s defense sector, particularly through partnerships in defense production and technology transfer. These collaborations will not only enhance the security capabilities of both countries but also promote stability and peace in the broader Indo-Pacific region.
Education and culture: Fostering deeper people-to-people connections
The role of education and cultural ties cannot be underestimated in the Australia-India relationship. The Indian diaspora in Australia, which now exceeds a million people, plays a crucial role in building strong people-topeople links. Indian students continue to flock to Australia for higher education, with Australian universities benefiting from the influx of international talent. Furthermore, recent agreements between Australian and Indian universities have paved the way for collaborative research initiatives and joint academic programs, facilitating greater academic cooperation between the two nations. The new Australian government is expected to continue supporting student exchange programs, recognizing the long-term value they bring in fostering deeper diplomatic and economic ties. Education plays a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations, as it provides young people from both countries with opportunities to build lasting connections. Additionally, the growing recognition of Indian contributions to Australian society, whether in business, academia, or culture, has sparked increased engagement between the two nations at the governmental and community levels.
Cultural exchanges have also become an integral part of the Australia-India relationship. Indian festivals like Diwali and Holi, which are celebrated enthusiastically across Australia, serve as important symbols of the cultural bond between the two nations. The growing presence of the Indian community in Australia has made cultural celebrations more widespread and has helped bring Indian traditions into the mainstream Australian cultural landscape. Cultural collaborations, such as joint art exhibitions, film projects, and performances, have further deepened mutual understanding and appreciation between the two countries.
As Australia moves forward after the 2025 elections, strengthening its relationship with India will remain a strategic priority. Both nations are eager to enhance their economic, security, and cultural ties, and the partnership between Australia and India holds significant promise for the future.
Pakistan’s dark karma haunts it in Balochistan
New Delhi, March 16 (IANS)
A country that has been the epicentre of global terrorism is now crying foul over a train hijacking incident. This is a classic case of karma coming back to haunt it after years of aiding, sponsoring, and backing terrorist activities in various parts of the world, particularly in its neighboring country, India, and even as far as the United States.
The hijacking of its train by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group seeking Balochistan's secession from Pakistan, has exposed the deep-rooted issues that have existed since Pakistan's inception. From the very beginning, its leaders have harboured sinister intentions of gobbling up its surroundings. The first casualty of this expansionist mindset was Balochistan, which was an independent country in 1947 when Pakistan was created and India gained independence from British rule.
After a brief period of independence of 227 days, Pakistan forcibly annexed the
region. Many Baloch nationalists did not accept this decision and viewed the annexation as an infringement upon their cultural identity and autonomy. Soon, they rose in defiance, but the Pakistani Army crushed their resistance with brutal force. The region witnessed uprisings in 1958, 1962, and 1973-77, but each time, the Pakistani establishment managed to suppress the movement.
In 2005, the movement for Baloch identity gained momentum again under the leadership of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, who was then Pakistan's Defence Minister and the Governor of Balochistan. He supported the armed struggle against the Pakistani state but was assassinated the following year. While his death momentarily subdued the movement, it did not end it.
The region has been simmering with unrest in recent years. Multiple violent incidents have been reported. More than 70 people were killed by the BLA in August 2024. At least 23 civilians were also shot dead after gunmen blocked highways. In a suicide bombing at Quetta railway station last year, 25 people were killed. The latest attack -- the train hijacking or the ambushing of a bus carrying security forces -- is a manifestation of the crisis caused by Pakistan's policies. The
Balochis fell victim to Pakistan's expansionist agenda in 1948, the same year it attempted to seize Jammu and Kashmir. While it succeeded in occupying Balochistan, its efforts to capture Jammu and Kashmir were thwarted by India's intervention.
In October 1947, Pakistani invaders entered Jammu and Kashmir, which was then an independent region, and brutally massacred thousands, forcibly converting many Hindus and Christians. Even Muslims who resisted them were not spared. When the situation became dire, the then-King of Jammu and Kashmir acceded to India, which swiftly intervened and prevented Pakistan's annexation of the region.
Jammu and Kashmir became an integral part of India, but Pakistan has continued to foment trouble there. Over the last four decades, it has sponsored terrorism under the guise of a separatist movement, fuelling Islamic radicalisation and attempting to revive the two-nation theory. While Pakistan has tried to portray the violence in Kashmir as a struggle for Kashmiri identity, it has simultaneously subjugated Balochistan, where people have been desperately fighting to protect their identity and resources. Unlike Kashmir,
which has witnessed significant development in terms of land, air, and internet connectivity, Pakistan has turned Balochistan into one of its most disadvantaged and disconnected regions.
Although Balochistan is Pakistan's richest province in terms of natural resources -- gas and minerals -- it remains the least developed. It lags in key indicators such as health, education, and human security. And has been facing discrimination and state repression over the decades -forced disappearances, killings, torture and human rights abuses. To make matters worse for the people of Balochistan, China's growing influence in the region has further fuelled the insurgency. Balochistan is a crucial part of the multibillion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The Gwadar Port, a key component of CPEC, serves as a major trade and energy transit hub for China. However, the Baloch people have vehemently opposed Chinese projects, viewing them as exploitative.
What happened to the hijacked Jaffar Express, which was travelling from Quetta to Peshawar with over 400 passengers on March 11, remains unclear. After a 30-hour siege, the Pakistani Army claimed to have
successfully ended the operation, while the BLA stated that they had escaped with 214 hostages and executed them. The truth may never be fully known, but one fact remains clear - Balochistan is rising once again.
This time, the uprising may be far more challenging for Pakistan to contain, given the multiple crises it is currently facing. It has failed to win the hearts of the people of Balochistan and is now resorting to blaming external forces. Instead of falsely accusing others, including India, of its failures, Pakistan must confront its internal problems.
It oppressed the Bangladeshis until they broke free in 1971. It attempted to incite unrest in Punjab and Kashmir and has been behind almost every major terrorist attack in India. It nurtured terrorist networks to destabilise India and other nations. Now, the chaos it sowed is finally coming back to haunt Pakistan.
The very terror network it created has turned against it, and it is now reaping the consequences of its actions. Balochistan serves as a mirror, exposing Pakistan's sinister designs.

The fire that lit up the judiciary’s hidden secrets!
New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) 'See you in court'-- a phrase often used as the final note of caution in disputes captures the essence of the judiciary's role as the ultimate arbiter of justice. Judges, vested with the power to alter the course of people's lives and shape critical legal precedents, are among the most respected figures in society. Trust and belief -- that is how the judiciary is looked up to. However, when the name of a sitting High Court judge gets linked to allegations of large sums of money, shock inevitably follows. Even more distressing is the aura of intrigue surrounding the incident, which has triggered intense debates and calls for transparency and accountability. Whether the allegations are true or not is for the Apex Court to determine, but this controversy has brought the judiciary face-to-face with a deeply
uncomfortable moment. It arises at a time when other pillars of democracy and key institutions are under scrutiny, challenged both by opposition parties and civil society groups. It is this very moment that demands the judiciary's serious attention. There have been murmurs about various issues related to the judiciary. But the fear of contempt has forced silence. There may be black sheep in the system, as are in other places. But the stories never come out here. There is a wall beyond which only the judicial system has space, and no one else can speak or comment or discuss. The lords have their own world.
Little could the personnel of the Delhi Fire Brigade have imagined that responding to a fire at a judge's residence would lead to the discovery of crores in cash.
On March 14, at around 11:30 p.m., a fire broke out at the
residential premises of Justice Yashwant Varma, the sitting judge of the Delhi High Court. It is being reported that it was a call regarding a fire in the storeroom, and two fire tenders doused the flames quickly.
During the process, reportedly, fire brigade personnel and the police stumbled upon "jute sacks full of cash." Whether this is true or false, the authorities need to answer; the media was full of news, even carrying the name and picture of the sitting judge.
After much rumour-mongering about the incident, the top court, in an unprecedented move in the interest of transparency, made public the report submitted by Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya. It released the video shared by the city's Commissioner of Police with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court (HC) showing the burnt cash piles purportedly at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma. The report also includes Justice Varma's response to the allegation and documents linked to the matter.
The incident is now under top court's scrutiny after Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna constituted a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry against Justice Varma.
Big legal luminaries are speaking up not just about the incident
but seeking a mechanism for transparency and accountability in the whole judicial system.
Senior lawyer and Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal said the "issue of corruption within the judiciary was a very serious one" and that "this has been articulated by senior counsels and lawyers several times."
Former Attorney General of India and senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi has talked about the "urgent need to overhaul the judiciary's systems, particularly in appointments, disciplinary actions, and removal procedures."
Senior Supreme Court advocate and BJP leader Nalin Kohli said this was a "very serious matter," and "questions will be raised."
This is not the first time that the judiciary has come into focus because of an unpleasant situation. Its undue activism, at times, has also been criticised.
In July 2015, the Supreme Court was opened for judges to hear at 3 a.m., the final plea against the execution of Yakub Memon for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. It was an unprecedented move as never before was the Supreme Court opened at 3 a.m. for a hearing. After about 90 minutes, the judges rejected Memon's appeal to stop his execution, and he was hanged in Nagpur jail a little before 7 a.m. on July 30, 2015.
If the court acknowledged the case situation in the Memon plea case, the displaced Kashmiri Pandits have failed to get sensitivity from the judiciary. Their pleas for a probe into the terrorist-perpetrated genocide of Pandit community members in Kashmir in 1989-90 was dismissed by the top court by saying "no case is made out."
Ironically, a senior Supreme Court judge (now retired) acknowledged in the Article 370 verdict of 2023 that little had been said about the plight of Kashmiri Pandits -- possibly because they did not constitute a significant electoral group to attract political intervention.
While judicial activism may or may not always be praiseworthy, corruption is a serious issue. A small fire in a judge's home has set out a raging inferno within the judicial system that needs to be dealt with carefully. It is time for serious introspection and decisive action. Ignoring the situation would be akin to burying one's head in the sand. The judiciary must be only about -- 'see you in court' feeling -- the ultimate justice giver. And most people have faith.

Global security spending to reach $377 billion in 2028 as cyber threats surge
New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) Amid growing cyber attacks, worldwide security spending is expected to see sustained growth throughout the 2023–2028 period, reaching $377 billion in 2028, according to a new report.
According to latest forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC), global security spending is expected to grow by 12.2 per cent (year on year) in 2025.
The increasing complexity and frequency of cyberthreats — accelerated by generative AI (GenAI) and AI in general — are driving organisations worldwide to adopt more advanced defensive measures.
The United States and Western
Europe will continue to account for more than 70 per cent of global security spending in 2025. However, all geographic regions are expected to see consistent growth in security spending this year, with the highest increases in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East and Africa.
“Growing digital transformation and hiking emerging technology adoption across the Middle East & Africa (MEA) region — especially countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — have pushed the demand significantly for security solutions to face the evolving threat landscapes,” said Eman Elshewy, senior research manager with IDC Data and Analytics.
Security software will be the largest technology group in 2025, representing more than half of the worldwide security market this year, as well as the fastest growing one, with a 14.4 per cent
year-on-year growth rate.
The security software market growth will be driven especially by cloud native application protection platform (CNAPP), identity and access management software, and security analytics software growth, reflecting the special focus that companies will put on integrated cyberthreats detection and response around their whole organisational perimeter.
Security services will be the second fastest growing technology group in 2025, driven by the continuous expansion of managed security services, on which organisations of all sizes will continue to increase their focus as a flexible and efficient way to face new security challenges.
Finally, security hardware will rank third, achieving single-digit but steady growth in 2025, said the report.

Leaders of the business world must have a strategic outlook
New Delhi: The recognised traits of a successful business leader are that he or she should be wellinformed, attuned to 'knowledge based decision-making' and interested in human psychology and behaviour since "all business is human activity".
Beyond these, however, it is the maturity of the individual that should be regarded as the core requisite of leadership in any field and that is rooted in the leader's 'power of authenticity' which in turn, flows from a combination of his or her trustworthiness, accessibility, transparency, selfconfidence, communication skills, ability to learn from experience and alignment with a declared set of values.
A mature leader knows that right decisions are basically the product of 'complete' knowledge, innate courage and objectivity of approach.
Completeness of information is necessary because 'knowledge' comes in integral packages covering all relevant points -- a business leader employing many men and women has to be aware of the laws pertaining to the safety and security of women at the workplace.
Courage is tested in terms of the nerves that the leader is required to deal with a contingency.
Objectivity was linked to the leader's commitment to the organisational goals that had to be kept above personal benefits.
Sound decision-making is not connected with 'inheritance' or personal 'charisma'.
A mature leader realises that leadership is not a matter only of status but of responsibility as well.
It is the image of maturity of leadership that survives an organisational setback and retains the loyalty of the stakeholders of the enterprise.
Though a leader is made not born -- importance of temperamental make up shaped by grooming to an extent, cannot be denied -- the fact is that maturity is the individual stamp that sets apart one leader from the other.
Parliament on January 31 -- that while 'hard work' is desirable it could not be at the cost of physical and mental health of the employees.
A thoughtless suggestion like this coming from a leader of the business mainstream of India at a time when this country is aspiring to be among the three largest economies of the world, drew attention to the need for maturity and strategic awareness on the part of the leadership of businesses.
This country could not afford to have its image sullied by the thought that it could be exploitative towards the labour for the sake of enhancing productivity.
Fortunately, a number of Indian leaders of business promptly disassociated themselves from the controversial statement. A leader ought to know how the 'mission' of the organisation fitted in the 'vision' of the nation in a situation of high global competition.
Approach to profitability cannot be to use the 'work force' as a machine that could be made to produce more through longer hours.
A successful leader on the other hand is well -- up in handling human relationships and while being strict about evaluating performance, is empathetic towards the problems of employees.
A competent leader banks on examination of all the information in the 'present', learns from what happened in the 'past' and has the ability to see the opportunities and risks that existed in the 'future'.
An analytical mind, freedom from ego in making a 'course correction' and use of 'imagination' to see beyond the facts in front to perceive what lay ahead and not miss the wood for the tree, is the corresponding package of qualities that makes for a leadership that was mature enough to understood what strategy was.
Maturity is in blending theory with practice, self -righteousnesse with logic and personal confidence with a balanced outlook.
of functioning. Gujarat has remained the best performing state in startups, he added. “PM Narendra Modi, as the then chief minister of Gujarat, ensured fast paced development of the state. Gujarat's development then became the country's development. And slowly, several countries, especially developing countries, today want to adopt India's development model," the minister told the gathering.
Only a mature leader can have a strategic thinking.
Some time back the statement of the Chairman of a top company of India advocating 90 hours of work per week for an employee, including Sundays, was found to be disruptive enough for the country's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to emphasise -- in her pre-Budget Economic Survey presented to the
A mature leader maintains one's cool in a crisis, retains his or her thinking capacity in a situation of disturbance and responds to a contingency with selfconfidence -- going beyond the empowerment of 'position'.
All this bestows on the leader a strategic outlook by which he or she never loses sight of the macro-vision even while responding at the tactical level.

for economic growth, promoting sustainability, stability, and inclusivity. She also encouraged Australian businesses to engage directly with the consulate for insights on India’s investment landscape.
Queensland-India trade mission & expanding economic ties
TIQ CEO Justin McGowan reflected on the recent Queensland-India trade mission, led by Governor of Queensland, Dr. Jeannette Young AC PSM, and Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment, and Training, Rosslyn Bates. He highlighted that this visit gave leaders firsthand insights into India’s scale, complexity, and market potential. McGowan noted that India remains a key trade priority for Queensland, with sustained efforts to strengthen economic ties. The trade mission included visits to BioAsia in Hyderabad, a sports summit in Gujarat, and business meetings with Indian officials, ministers, and industry leaders. He emphasized that 70% of Australia’s exports to
India come from Queensland, reinforcing the state's strong economic partnership. He also pointed out Queensland’s vital role in supplying metallurgical coal, which is essential for India’s "Make in India" initiative. Boosting trade & investment opportunities
The Queensland government is expanding its trade footprint in India, with TIQ opening a new office in Mumbai and increasing its staff presence to support business expansion and trade growth. McGowan also highlighted Queensland’s push to promote fresh produce exports to India, including avocados, macadamias, and chickpeas. Key takeaways from India’s Union Budget 2025
Senior EY India leaders Sameer Gupta, Uday Pimprikar, and Samir Kanabar provided an in-depth analysis of India’s Union Budget 2025, covering economic reforms and trade policies. They noted that India’s economy is projected to grow at 6.5% in FY25 and could reach 7% in FY26, maintaining its position as the world’s fastest-growing large economy. The budget introduced income tax relief for the middle class, raising the tax-free threshold
to ₹12 lakh, which is expected to boost domestic demand and consumption. The Indian government continues to push for manufacturing and exports, expanding Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes to new sectors such as defence and pharmaceuticals. These policies open new business opportunities for Australian companies looking to invest in India’s growing industrial sector. The budget also includes significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reforms, raising the FDI limit in the insurance sector to 100% and allowing automatic FDI approvals in more industries, which is expected to foster closer business collaborations between India and Australia.
GIFT City & financial sector reforms
The financial services sector also received a boost, with GIFT City in Gujarat positioned as a global financial hub offering tax incentives and regulatory ease to attract foreign investors. The AI-ECTA (Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement) is playing a key role in accelerating bilateral trade, particularly in natural resources, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and IT services. Queensland’s
avocados are now available in India, while Indian pomegranates have entered the Brisbane market, marking significant progress in agricultural trade between the two nations. Trade tariff reforms & digital taxation
Further customs tariff reforms have been introduced, reducing average tariff rates and simplifying trade regulations. Key manufacturing sectors, including critical minerals and textiles, have benefited from tariff reductions, making trade with India more accessible for Australian businesses. India is also advancing its digital taxation policies, implementing a faceless tax audit system and streamlining GST compliance through new mechanisms like the Invoice Management System (IMS).
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, reaffirming the strong commitment to strengthening the Australia-India economic partnership. With growing trade opportunities and policy alignment, Queensland is set to play a pivotal role in deepening its engagement with India’s rapidly expanding economy.

Brisbane’s best street art recognised at Artforce Awards
Brisbane, March 28 (Australia India News Newsdesk)
Brisbane’s most eye-catching electrical boxes have been celebrated at the 26th annual Artforce Awards, which honour the most outstanding murals transforming everyday infrastructure into vibrant public art. Out of 84 entries, nine winners were announced, showcasing the creativity and
community spirit behind the city’s evolving street art scene.
Lucia Laus was named Overall Winner for her Climbing Kangaroo design, a tribute to the strong culture of climbing sports at Kangaroo Point. Maddie Field’s Ibis-zilla, a playful homage to Brisbane’s iconic ibis, won the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Award for best design.
The Artforce competition, open to artists of all ages and experience levels, encourages community participation in the arts while enhancing Brisbane’s streetscape and deterring vandalism. Each artwork reflects the heritage and identity of the suburb it is placed in, creating a visual connection between residents and their local environment.
For the first time in the program’s history, some designs were
applied using digital wrapping rather than traditional paint. This innovation allowed artwork to be featured on electrical boxes in high-traffic areas where painting on-site was not feasible.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner praised the talent on display, saying, “I’ve been so impressed by the creativity displayed and how these designs captured the heritage and incredible lifestyle of our city. I would like to especially acknowledge Lucia Laus for her best overall design and Maddie Field for winning the Lord Mayor’s award. Artforce is one of the many ways we’re supporting the arts community and ensuring Brisbane suburbs are the most vibrant places to live.”
The winning designs are now on display across the city, brightening Brisbane’s streets
while celebrating local stories and artistic expression. Those interested in viewing the

Brisbane’s newest double-decker CityCat sets sail
Brisbane, March 27 (Australia India News Newsdesk)
Brisbane’s river transport has taken another leap forward with the launch of Baneraba II, the
latest double-decker CityCat now in service to keep the city moving.
Christened on March 27, Baneraba II is the ninth doubledecker CityCat delivered by the
Schrinner Council, with one final vessel set to arrive later this year to complete the upgraded fleet.
The new ferry is named after the first-generation Baneraba, which launched in 1998, and means Toowong in the language of Brisbane’s Indigenous people.
The vessel was officially christened by Ferry Master Nina Moore, who started her career with River City Ferries in 2018 as a Customer Service Officer before working her way up to mastering CityCats across Brisbane’s network.
With Baneraba II joining the fleet, the two oldest first-generation CityCats, Mirbarpa and Tugulawa, will now be retired. These vessels will have their branding and fitouts removed before being made
available for sale, with potential for more first-generation CityCats to be sold depending on demand. This follows a precedent set by Brisbane City Council’s sale of retired diesel buses to other Queensland operators. Chair for Transport Ryan Murphy highlighted the value of Brisbane’s ferry network, saying, “Brisbane’s ferry network doesn’t just get passengers where they need to go, it’s a fantastic tourism offering that adds to our incredible lifestyle. As we welcome another new CityCat to the fleet, we’ve identified an opportunity to give our older vessels a second life elsewhere. We will always look for ways to keep costs down for residents while making sure we have the public transport we need to keep
Brisbane moving.”
Ferry Master Nina Moore reflected on her journey and the evolution of Brisbane’s ferry service. “I’m proud to have built my career on the Brisbane River—from starting out as a Customer Service Officer to now stepping into the Ferry Master role. Just as Brisbane has grown stronger through challenges like floods and cyclones, and is now stepping onto the world stage as an Olympic city, our iconic ferry service has continued to evolve and grow with it. It’s amazing to see how far the fleet has come—
Baneraba II will help us deliver an even better experience for our passengers, and I’m honoured to be part of this next chapter.” Baneraba II is now officially in service. To

A taste of Australia in Chennai: An evening of flavours and connections
By Dr Ram Mohan, Editor
Attending the Australian culinary night at Taj Coromandel in Chennai, recently was an experience that engaged all my senses. From the moment I walked into the elegantly set venue, there was a distinct air of excitement—an intersection of culture, food, and warm hospitality that made the evening
unforgettable. The Australian ConsulateGeneral in Chennai, along with the Austrade team, had curated an extraordinary menu that brought the essence of Australia to our plates. Each dish told a story—delicate Australian oysters that tasted like the ocean, rich Tasmanian salmon that melted in the mouth, and succulent Aussie
lamb cooked to perfection. Every bite was complemented by fine Australian wines, enhancing the flavours and making the evening feel like a journey through the vibrant food landscape of Australia.
Beyond the culinary delights, what made the night truly special was the company. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr.
Palanivel Thiagarajan, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, and Ms. Silai Zaki, the ConsulGeneral in Chennai. Our conversations reflected the growing ties between Australia and India —not just in trade but in culture, people, and experiences.
As I left the event, I carried with me not just the lingering
taste of exquisite food but also a deep appreciation for how food brings people together. This night was more than a celebration of flavours; it was a celebration of connections, of shared experiences, and of the joy that comes with discovering something new. I look forward to more such moments where global flavors meet local warmth, right here in Chennai.

Chennai, March 24 (IANS)
Australian cricketer David Warner, who will be making his debut as an actor in the Indian film industry with a cameo in director Venky Kudumula’s upcoming Telugu action entertainer ‘Robinhood’, thrilled audiences by uttering a phrase in Telugu during his speech at a pre-release event organised by the makers of the film.
Speaking at the pre-release event of ‘Robinhood’, featuring actors Nithiin and Sree Leela in the lead, David Warner said, “Namaskaram. Thank you all. Appreciate you all turning up. From the bottom of
IPL
2025: ‘Every
my heart, I want to say thank you to all for the support for the last 15 years. Really appreciate it.”
“To Mythri Movie Makers, director Venky, I was very nervous getting out of my coloured clothing and getting into the film industry. You brought it to my attention to come. I spoke to you. I reached out to Sree Leela as well to say I am humbled for the offer to come and participate in the movie but I wanted to make sure it was going to be a big success. And I was nervous to come into your family and world because it is foreign but thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is amazing and I feel privileged and honoured that you guys have all accepted me into your family,” he explained.
“To the co-stars, you guys, from what I have seen, this movie looks absolutely amazing. So, credit to you guys for your hardwork,
your work ethics. I am sure this is going to be absolutely massive. I wish you guys all the best moving forward,” he said.
When director Venky asked him to speak something in Telugu, Warner said, "Ninna Neenu Premisthunnanu" (I love you) much to the delight of fans and audiences gathered for the event. ‘Robinhood’, as the title suggests, has Nithiin playing a thief who steals from the rich to give to the poor. He plays a character called Honey Singh, who is involved in a series of robberies. Nithiin’s character in the film is such that he has no agendas. A courageous person, who has no fear, Nithiin’s character in the film is such that he is willing to take on anybody for the right price.
The release of the film, which was originally scheduled to hit screens last year, has now been pushed to March 28 this year.
time people question Dhoni, he proves them wrong’, says Gavaskar
Kolkata, March 23 (IANS) As the Chennai Super Kings set to kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians (MI) in a clash of the five-time champions, all eyes will be on MS Dhoni, who continues to be a key figure in the league. Addressing the speculation over ex-skipper's participation in the season, India legend Sunil Gavaskar said that whenever people questioned the CSK stalwart, he silenced those critics with his skills.
The cricketer, who turns 44
in July, is playing his 18th straight IPL season, 16 of these representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He has so far played 264 games and scored 5243 runs, placing him sixth on the all-time run list, with 24 half-centuries to his name.
"Why should we even ask that question? Why put pressure on him? Every time people question MS Dhoni, he proves them wrong. Don’t doubt his ability. Even at this age, he’s hitting sixes not just past the boundary but into the stands during practice. Age is just a number when it comes to Dhoni," Gavaskar said on JioHotstar.
When Dhoni takes the field against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday evening, he needs to hit just two maximums to complete
250 sixes for CSK, the franshise he led in 212 matches, winning 128 games while losing 82 matches since the IPL began in 2008. Overall, Dhoni is placed fourth in the most IPL sixes list, trailing Chris Gayle (357), Rohit Sharma (280) and Virat Kohli (272). Dhoni’s tenure as captain of CSK began in the first season back in 2008 and resulted in five trophywinning campaigns. He has spent his entire career with the Super Kings, barring the 2016 and 2017 seasons when the franchise was suspended due to spot-fixing scandal.
CSK used the retention clause in the IPL mega auction last year to keep Dhoni for the 2025 season as an uncapped player, given his five-year absence from international cricket.

Djokovic praises Brazilian teenager Fonseca, calls him a ‘complete player’
Miami, March 24 (IANS) Novak Djokovic, who earned a recordbreaking 411th ATP Masters 1000 match win at the Miami Open, believes the game is in great shape with newcomers such as Joao Fonseca, as well as talented World No. 1 and 2; 23-year-old Jannik Sinner and charismatic 21-year-old Alcaraz, who have combined to win seven Grand Slams.
The 18-year-old Brazilian Fonseca has enjoyed a rapid rise at the start of the 2025 season. He claimed his maiden tour-level title in Buenos Aires in February and became the youngest player to reach round three at ATP Masters 1000 since Carlos Alcaraz in Paris in 2021, when he defeated Hugo Humbert to reach the third round of the Miami Open on
Saturday.
Among those impressed by the fast-rising 18-year-old is Djokovic, the record holder for most weeks at No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, who spoke at length about Fonseca on Sunday at the Miami Open.
“He has been the talk of the tour in the last several months. So young and just incredible firepower from both ends of the baseline. Serve. He’s a very complete player. What is impressive is the way he strikes the ball, but even more so how he handles the nerves on the court for someone that doesn’t have experience at all playing at the highest level," Djokovic said of Fonseca in a press conference after the Serbian’s third-round victory against Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
Djokovic is making his 14th Miami appearance, and Fonseca is making his first. Nearly 20 years Fonseca’s senior, the Serbian earned a record 411th ATP Masters 1000 match win on Sunday, while the Brazilian star is set to compete in his maiden thirdround appearance at that level.

A mathematics graduate from Zakir Husain College, he credits his time on stage for shaping his bold and unconventional approach to acting.
His passion for theatre took him beyond India, landing him in England as part of a prestigious Royal Shakespeare production. Traveling across the globe, he brought Shakespeare’s timeless works to life. During this period, theatre was his sole focus, and he even considered making London his artistic home. He came close to breaking into the renowned West End Theatre scene, with plans nearly set for a production at the iconic Piccadilly Theatre. Meanwhile, Chandan recently reprised his iconic character, Bhopa Swami, in “Aashram Season 3 Part 2.” The show features Bobby Deol as the manipulative and sinister Baba Nirala, who exploits the young women in his ashram. The second part of season 3 of the show was dropped on February 27 on Amazon MX Player.

Idukki is the ‘golden goose’ of Kerala Tourism: Minister Mohamed Riyas
The hilly district of Idukki known for its breathtaking view and the rough terrain is now identified as the ‘golden goose’ of Kerala Tourism marking the highest rise in foreign tourist footfalls among all the 14 districts of the state, said Tourism and Public Works Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas on Saturday. Though it is the largest district in the region in terms of area, it has the lowest population density
among all the districts in the state.
Another feature of Idukki is a sizeable area comes under reserved forests and wildlife sanctuaries, both crucial for tourists.
Riyas arrived in Idukki to inaugurate the new Ecolodge and renovated heritage Guesthouse at Peerumedu.
The Eco-lodge has been completed at a cost of Rs 5.05 crore under the Swadesh Darshan project.
Elaborating on the roadmap for tourism which today is the biggest money-spinning industry in the state, Riyas who is also the son-in-law of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, said Kochi will soon be hosting a MICE Tourism Conclave besides a Wellness Tourism Conclave in Kozhikode to promote new products in the sector.
“Kerala Tourism is adopting a ‘Look East’ policy to increase the number of tourists from East Asian countries. As part of this strategy, we are collaborating with Malaysian Airlines to bring influencers and travel and tourism agents from eight East Asian countries to Kerala and Idukki and Wayanad will be the biggest beneficiaries,” said Riyas.
Local legislator Vazhoor Soman recalled that in the yesteryears Peerumedu was a popular spot, especially during the time when the state was ruled by the erstwhile royal family.
“With the new policies, Peerumedu will regain its glory in tourism. A circuit will be formed, linking places such as Panchalimedu, Vagamon, Uluppuni and Sathram,” said Soman.
Kerala Tourism Director Sikha Surendran said the new Ecolodge will boost the farm tourism potential of Peerumedu.

PM Modi to flag off train from Katra to Valley on April 19
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first train from Katra to the Valley on April 19 fulfilling the over 70-year-old dream of rail connectivity to Kashmir.
The train will chug off from Katra town in Reasi district and will cross the Pir Panjal mountain range to reach Srinagar and then its final destination at Baramulla in north Kashmir.
PM Modi will flag off the train from Katra in the presence of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
At present, the train operates from Sangaldan to Baramulla.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to land at Udhampur Army airport from New Delhi on the morning of April 19 and then fly to the world’s highest railway bridge over Chenab river in Reasi district.
PM Modi will be briefed about the construction of the bridge, which is considered to be an engineering marvel.
The Prime Minister will then reach the Mata Vaishno Devi base camp, Katra from where he will flag off the Vande Bharat train to the Valley.
PM Modi will address a public rally at Katra before returning to Delhi in the afternoon.
Railway officials said after completion of expansion work at Jammu Railway Station, including increase in the number of platforms, the train to the Valley will start operations from Jammu, expectedly by July-August this year.
“There will be no direct train from Delhi or any other part to Kashmir. The passengers will have to de-board at Katra and change the train. Later, the same process
will shift to Jammu”, officials said.
Several trials of the train from Katra to Baramulla including that of Vande Bharat Express have been successful and the security issues have also been addressed. Out of the total 272 kms of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, 209 kms was commissioned in phases with the first phase of the 118 km Qazigund-Baramulla section commissioned in October 2009, followed by the 18 km BanihalQazigund link in June 2013, 25 kms of the Udhampur-Katra stretch in July 2014 and the 48.1 km BanihalSangaldan section in February, last year.
The work on the 46 km Sangaldan-Reasi section was also completed in June last year, leaving a 17 km stretch between Reasi and Katra which was also completed nearly three months ago, leading to the start of different trials of trains, including that of Vande Bharat.
The project involved an expenditure of Rs 41,000 crore. On January 4, a successful trial run of an electric train was conducted on the Katra-Banihal section.
Series of trials over the past few months on various segments of the track, including the two major milestones of the Anji Khad and Chenab bridges, have been conducted.
The Vande Bharat Express Train between Katra and Srinagar has been specially designed with antifreezing features.
Manufactured by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), this new Vande Bharat train can operate smoothly in extremely cold conditions as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. To ensure comfort for passengers and drivers, the train is equipped with advanced heating systems.
International passengers to shell out more at Delhi airport from April 16
New Delhi, March 30 (IANS) International passengers will have to shell out more for flying out of Delhi airport starting April 16, as the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved higher and variable user development fees (UDF) for economy and business class passengers.
Recognising that domestic travelers make up 80 per cent of the total traffic at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), AERA has decided to keep the UDF for domestic passengers unchanged at Rs 129 for the fourth control period.
“Against the existing yield per passenger of Rs 145 valid under the 3rd control period, the nominal yield per passenger has been increased to Rs 360 throughout the balance four years of control period valid till March 31, 2029," GMR Airports has said in a regulatory filing.
Currently, UDF charges are uniform for both domestic and international travellers. However, with the revised tariff structure, international passengers will now pay significantly higher fees depending on their class of travel.
3,300 IoT startups in India fostering innovation across multiple sectors: Report
New Delhi, March 20 (IANS)
The thriving Indian startup ecosystem, with over 3,300 Internet of Things (IoT)-focused startups, is fostering innovation across multiple sectors, a report showed on Thursday.
The Indian IoT market is rapidly transforming, fuelled by increasing digitalisation and the demand for innovative, efficient solutions across industries.
From manufacturing and transportation to healthcare and agriculture, IoT is revolutionizing operations, improving quality of life, and contributing to economic growth, said Abhishek Maiti, Director–Technology and Internet, at 1Lattice, a technologyenabled decision support organisation.
The government initiatives like “Digital India” and “Make in India” have made IoT solutions more accessible and affordable, while advancements in connectivity, artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics are enhancing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of IoT platforms.
The Smart Cities Mission is integrating IoT applications into urban infrastructure, including smart parking, intelligent transport systems, and energy management.
Meanwhile, India's digital economy, now the third largest globally, is being bolstered by significant investments such as Google's $10 billion commitment to the MSME digitisation by 2027.
The thriving startup ecosystem, with over 3,300 IoT-focused startups, is fostering innovation across multiple sectors.
Government-backed R&D initiatives, including the "Centre of Excellence for IoT and AI" by MeitY and NASSCOM, are addressing key challenges such as
reducing import dependence and improving security frameworks, said Maiti.
Moreover, automation advancements have driven down the cost of IoT sensors, making the technology more accessible and boosting productivity across industries.
However, widespread IoT adoption in India is not without challenges.
Data security and privacy concerns remain significant, as IoT devices collect and store sensitive information that is vulnerable to breaches.
“Managing the vast amounts of data generated by these devices requires robust infrastructure for storage, realtime processing, and analytics. A lack of standardisation creates interoperability issues, while regulatory complexities related to data governance hinder seamless implementation,” said Maiti. Despite these challenges, the future of IoT in India remains promising, he added.

Researchers find mechanisms that may lead to inflammatory bowel disease
New York, March 23 (IANS) A team of scientists has discovered mechanisms of abnormal immune cell function that may lead to Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Crohn’s disease causes chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and symptoms can include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weight loss, anaemia, and fatigue.
White blood cells in the GI tract known as intraepithelial lymphocytes express the gamma delta T cell receptor (gamma delta
Waist
IELs), which prevent infection and provide surveillance for the intestinal barrier. These gamma delta IELs are often reduced in patients with active Crohn’s disease.
A research team led by Mount Sinai said their study is the first to show that gamma delta IELs are critical to maintain a balance between pro-inflammatory and regulatory immune responses, and these cells are impaired during the onset and progression of long-term inflammation in the lower small intestine.
“Previous studies assessing patient biopsies revealed a decrease in gamma delta IELs in those with active IBD. However, it was unknown whether the loss of these cells was a cause or consequence of disease,” said Karen Edelblum, Associate Professor of Pathology, Molecular and Cell-Based Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
circumference stronger
The findings, published in Science Immunology, now show that gamma delta IELs are substantially decreased weeks before clinical or histological evidence of disease in a mouse model of Crohn’s disease-like ileitis.
Furthermore, “we were able to generate a timeline of events leading to the dysregulation of gamma delta IELs that mirrored findings from prior studies in patients with IBD,” Edelblum said. The researchers said loss of gamma delta IELs could be used as a predictive biomarker for disease relapse or patient responsiveness to treatment. Additionally, development of future therapies that boost the function of gamma delta IELs may provide a new way to maintain remission in IBD patients or prevent disease development in susceptible individuals.

New Delhi, March 23 (IANS)
Waist circumference (WC) is a stronger risk marker than BMI for developing obesity-related cancers in men, but not women, says a new study.
BMI is a measure of body size, but does not provide information on fat distribution, whereas waist circumference is a proxy more closely related to abdominal adiposity.
“This distinction is crucial because visceral fat, which accumulates around the abdominal organs, is more metabolically active and has been implicated in adverse health outcomes, including insulin resistance, inflammation, and abnormal blood fat levels,” said
obesity-related cancer in men
the study conducted by Dr Ming Sun, Dr Josef Fritz and Dr Tanja Stocks.
Consequently, individuals with similar BMIs may have distinct cancer risks due to differences in fat distribution, they noted.
The study analysed data from 339,190 individuals collected from various Swedish populations who had undergone health assessments with BMI and WC assessments from 1981-2019 (61 per cent objectively measured, 39 per cent self-reported, mean age 51.4 years). Cancer diagnoses were obtained from the Swedish Cancer Register.
The authors calculated relative risks associated with obesityrelated cancers for WC and BMI, taking into account multiple factors that could influence the results, such as age, smoking habits, and sociodemographic factors including education level, income, birth country and marital status.
During a median follow-up of 14 years, 18,185 established obesityrelated cancers were recorded.
After accounting for BMI, high WC still remained a risk factor for obesity-related cancer in men. This suggests that the elevated risk associated with abdominal adiposity is specific, and not explained by high body size alone, as measured by BMI. Among women, the associations were weaker and similar for both WC and BMI.
“A plausible explanation is that men are more likely to store fat viscerally, while women generally accumulate more subcutaneous and peripheral fat,” said authors in Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Including hip circumference into risk models may provide further insights into this sex difference and enhance the association between WC and cancer, particularly for women, they added.
Global HIV funding cuts can cause over 10 mn infections, 3 mn deaths by 2030: Lancet
The significant reductions in international funding for HIV prevention and treatment programmes may result in more
than 10 million infections, and about 3 million deaths by 2030, according to a study published in The Lancet HIV journal on Thursday.
The study, conducted by a team at the Burnet Institute in Australia’s Melbourne models the impact of a projected 24 per cent reduction in global HIV funding by 2026. This follows announced aid cuts of 8 per cent to 70 per cent by key donors, including the US, Britain, France, Germany, and the
High-resolution ultrasound to diagnose prostate cancer faster: Study
New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) An international clinical trial showed on Sunday that biopsies guided by high resolution ultrasound are as effective as those using MRI in diagnosing prostate cancer.
The technology, called microultrasound, is cheaper and easier to use than MRI.
“It could significantly speed up diagnosis, reduce the need for multiple hospital visits and free up MRI for other uses,” said researchers. The results of the trial were presented at the European Association of Urology Congress in Madrid and published in the journal JAMA. This is the first randomised trial to compare micro-ultrasound (microUS) guided biopsy with MRI-guided biopsy for prostate cancer. It involves 677 men who underwent biopsy at 19 hospitals across Canada, the USA and Europe.
Of these, half underwent MRIguided biopsy, a third received microUS-guided biopsy followed by MRI-guided biopsy and the remainder received microUSguided biopsy alone.
MicroUS was able to identify prostate cancer as effectively as MRI-guided biopsy, with very
similar rates of detection across all three arms of the trial. There was little difference even in the group who received both types of biopsies, with the microUS detecting the majority of significant cancers, the authors noted.
MRI-guided biopsy requires a two-step process (the MRI scan, followed by the ultrasoundguided biopsy), requiring multiple hospital visits and specialist radiological expertise to interpret the MRI images and fuse them onto the ultrasound.
Micro-ultrasound has higher frequency than conventional ultrasound, resulting in three times greater resolution images that can capture similar detail to MRI scans for targeted biopsies. Clinicians such as urologists and oncologists can be easily trained to use the technique and interpret the images, especially if they have experience in conventional ultrasound.
Laurence Klotz, Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, said that microUS can give as good a diagnostic accuracy as MRI and that is also game changing.
"It means you can offer a one stop shop, where patients are scanned, then biopsied immediately if required. There’s no toxicity. There are no exclusions. It’s much cheaper and more accessible. And it frees up MRIs for hips and knees and all the other things they’re needed for,” he noted.
Nanotechnology breakthrough may boost treatment for aggressive breast cancer: Study
Sydney, March 24 (IANS)
Netherlands. These five countries collectively fund over 90 per cent of global HIV assistance.
This could lead to an estimated “4.4 to 10.8 million additional new HIV infections and 770,000 to 2.9 million HIV-related deaths in children and adults between 2025 and 2030 if funding cuts proposed by the top five donor countries, including the US and the UK, are not mitigated,” said the researchers.
Researchers in Australia are developing next-generation nanoparticles to supercharge current treatments for triplenegative breast cancer (TNBC) -- one of the most aggressive and deadly forms of the disease. The researchers are designing innovative iron-based nanoparticles, or "nanoadjuvants," small enough to fit thousands on a single strand of hair, to strengthen the body's immune response against TNBC, according to the University of Queensland's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.
Unlike other breast cancers, TNBC lacks the proteins targeted by some of the conventional
treatments used against other cancers, making effective therapy a significant challenge, according to Prof. Yu Chengzhong from the AIBN.
"Despite the promise of immunotherapy, its effectiveness against triple-negative breast cancer is extremely limited, which is leaving too many women without options -- and that's what our research is trying to change," Yu said.
The nanoparticles are designed to enhance the activity of T-cells, the white blood cells used by the immune system to fight disease, within the tumour microenvironment, improving the immune system's ability to recognise and attack cancer cells, according to Yu.
Supported by a 3 million Australian dollar ($1.89 million) National Health and Medical Research Council grant, the five-year research project aims to bridge a critical treatment gap, and could pave the way for clinical applications, not only for TNBC but also for other hard-totreat cancers like ovarian cancer.

Chase the sun, not the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer
As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.
Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.
"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.
Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends
to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."
While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."
The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

She said that fashion is a way of self-expression for the actress.
“Fashions have always been a medium for me to express that, and it's actually been very empowering for me to constantly have that medium to be able to channel it apart from me being a performer and actor for the past 20 years,” she added.
The actress will next be seen in “Odela 2,” which she has said has a supernatural backdrop and slight spiritual tone to it.
Talking about “Odela 2,” a supernatural thriller film directed by Ashok Teja, Tamannaah said, “It is a fantasy movie and is a fantastical theatrical experience. At the same time, it has a supernatural backdrop and a slight spiritual tone to it. All these elements were very fantastical.”
The actress said that she enjoys such movies because they are larger than life.
“And I enjoy that kind of cinema because growing up I loved films that were larger-than-life films that also took you into a different world. I found out that this film actually went to Kashi for the first time.” Odela 2 also stars Hebah Patel, and Vasishta N. Simha in lead roles, alongside Yuva, Naga Mahesh, Vamsi, Gagan Vihari, Surender Reddy, Bhupal, and Pooja Reddy.

Rhea Chakraborty’s lawyer issues statement on CBI’s closure report in Sushant Singh Rajput case
Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty's legal representative has said that the false narrative fabricated and run on social media pertaining to her client after actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death was totally uncalled for.
He also said that the outcome of the investigation of the case restores faith in justice and the judiciary.
On Saturday, CBI in its closure reports said that it did not find any evidence that anyone had driven Sushant Singh Rajput to suicide, and Rhea Chakraborty and her family have been given a clean chit.
Reacting to the filing of the closure report, Rhea's lawyer,
Satish Maneshinde in a statement said, "The CBI has filed a closure report in connection with the death of Sushant Singh Rajput after almost 4 years. We are grateful to the CBI for having thoroughly investigated every aspect of the case from all angles and closed the case. The amount of false narrative in the Social Media and Electronic Media was totally uncalled for. Due to the Pandemic everyone was glued to the TV & Social Media in the absence of anything happening in the country. Innocent people were hounded and paraded before the Media and investigative authorities. I hope this does not repeat in any case."
He further mentioned, "I beseech the captains of Media to reflect
upon what they did. Rhea Chakraborty to undergo untold miseries and was behind bars for 27 days for no fault of hers until Justice Sarang V. Kotwal released her on bail. I salute her & her Family for having kept silent and yet suffered the inhuman treatment they were meted. They came to me through a close friend and Defence personnel who are close friends of mine with whom I studied in a Sainik School. Both Rhea's Family and My Team & I were hounded and threatened of danger to our life. I must say nothing deterred us from carrying out our legal duties."
The lawyer said that he is proud to have defended a Fauji Family pro-bono and that should rest with the kind of speculative narration about his fees.
"I also thank a large section of the media for having supported Me & Rhea's cause and her fight for Justice. This Country is still very Safe & Every Citizen crying for Justice has hope due to our Vibrant Judiciary," he added. Sushant was found hanging at his flat in the Bandra area of Mumbai on June 14, 2020.

Disha Salian case should not be linked to Sushant Singh’s death: Shiv Sena
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam on Sunday called for a deeper investigation into the Disha Salian case, following a petition filed in the Bombay High Court and an FIR against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray.
However, he emphasised that the case should not be linked with Sushant Singh Rajput's death. This comes after the CBI, in its closure report on Saturday, ruled out any foul play in Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide, giving a clean chit to Rhea Chakraborty and her family.
Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court is set to hear a petition on April 2 filed by Satish Salian, father of the late Disha Salian, in which Aditya Thackeray and others have been named in an FIR.
Addressing a press conference, Nirupam said, "After Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide, the CBI was assigned to investigate, and now they have filed a closure report. Everyone should accept
this and stop making unnecessary claims. However, the Disha Salian case should not be linked to Sushant Singh's case."
Referring to allegations that Disha was raped and murdered, he said, "A few days before Sushant's death, Disha Salian was found dead. Now, it is being alleged that she was raped and murdered, and her body was found without clothes. Her father has filed a petition naming Aditya Thackeray as an accused in the rape and murder. No father would make such claims about his own daughter unless there was truth to it."
He urged the court to take cognisance of the matter and direct the Mumbai Police to investigate.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Narayan Rane on Saturday claimed that Uddhav Thackeray's secretary, Milind Narvekar, had called him twice, requesting that Aditya Thackeray's name be kept out of the Disha Salian case.

'Azaad' director Abhishek Kapoor commented on the post with two red-heart emojis.
While the project failed to perform at the box office, the drama premiered on Netflix on March 14. Aaman underwent rigorous training to portray a village boy in his debut drama. To justify his role, he even developed a strong bond with the horse, as his character required him to master horse riding.
Spilling the beans on what all went behind the training process, Aaman shared, “I'm extremely fond of horses, and when I heard the script of the movie, I knew in my heart I had to do it. I decided to devote my time understanding Azaad, his moods and his body language to ensure that it looks absolutely real onscreen.

Dolly Parton has ‘not stopped crying’ since watching this tribute to late husband Carl Dean
Veteran
singer-songwriter
Dolly Parton recently spoke about the touching tribute to her husband Carl Dean.
Two days after the threehour special ‘Opry 100: A Live Celebration’ aired live, featuring a star-studded performance of ‘I Will Always Love You’, Parton, 79, reacted to the honor in an Instagram Stories statement, reports ‘People’ magazine. She wrote, “I have not stopped crying over the beautiful tribute of ‘I Will Always Love You’ on the 100th Anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry show”.
"All those beautiful people with all their beautiful voices
singing my song as a tribute to my husband Carl… the emotion was beyond words. I have cried enough to wash a great deal of the pain away so thanks to all of you beautiful people that helped make that possible", her statement continued. "I also will always love you”.
As per ‘People’, Parton shared the news of her Dean's death via Instagram. He was 82 years old. While his cause of death was not immediately announced, Parton's post said that he would be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending.
"Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can't do
justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time", she wrote. Before the special performance of ‘I Will Always Love You’, which was led by Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood of Lady A, Reba McEntire, and Carrie Underwood, a special message from Parton was played.
"Well hello, I am Dolly Parton and I am a proud member of the Grand Ole Opry. And I am so sorry that I can't be there with everybody in person, but of course, you know my heart is with you and my spirit is with you”. Parton said in the video, as per Knox News Sentinel.
According to the outlet, the performance included around 50 Grand Ole Opry members.
During a conversation with Knox News Sentinel at the opening celebration for Dollywood's 40th season, Parton said she was "doing better than I thought I would" following Dean's death, noting that she is "at peace that he's at peace" but said that won't stop her from "missing him and loving him”.
Jennifer Coolidge talks about career turnaround, dating at 63
Taylor Swift comes out of Instagram Hiatus, praises Selena Gomez’s new album
Pop icon Taylor Swift made a return to Instagram after more than three months to appreciate fellow singer-songwriter Selena Gomez‘s new album.
Swift heaped praise on ‘I Said I Love You First’, the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ star’s new musical collaboration with her fiance Benny Blanco, reports ‘Variety’.
about Tanya falling off a boat. These men like you better because they feel that you went through something. That show really upped my game."
The actress, who has found new levels of fame after decades in Hollywood, spoke openly about the prolonged career slump between her early 2000s successes and Mike White casting her in HBO's hit series, reports 'Variety'.
From 2006 until 'The White Lotus' in 2021, Coolidge experienced a time during which she was typecast and overlooked.
"I got very odd jobs, I had no guidance at all. I didn't know how to play the game," she added.
As per 'Variety', the typecasting problem persisted as casting agents only thought of her as Stifler's Mom from 'American Pie'.
"I played a lot of highly strung rich women, people thought, 'Oh, that's just what she does'," she shared.
Her career revival came courtesy of longtime friend White, creator of 'The White Lotus', who conceived the character of Tanya McQuoid after sharing a tent with Coolidge during an African vacation where she behaved "eccentrically".
"Do I think any other director would have chosen me for Tanya? Probably not," Coolidge reflected during the interview.
“(Selena Gomez) & (Benny Blanco) I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDD (sic)”, Swift wrote on Instagram Stories, sharing a link to the album.
As per ‘Variety’, the 14-song record is Gomez’s first major musical release since her 2020 album ‘Rare’.
While her fans are certainly pleased that the current queen of pop shared the project on social media, they’re also expressing frustration with other artists
who are not showing support despite the fact Selena Gomez has supported them in the past.
Prior to Swift’s glowing endorsement, one popular Selena Gomez fan account posted to X, “No celebrity supporting Selena Gomez’s new album except Becky G. Not Even Taylor Swift”. The post has since been taken down. Fans are also upset with Gomez’s label Interscope Records, saying that it has not properly promoted the project since its March 21 release. “(Interscope Records) must really love losing money by not promoting one of their biggest artists”, wrote one fan on X. Ahead of the album’s release, Spotify posted a teaser in the form of a one-on-one sitdown between Blanco and Gomez. The 33-minute conversation took listeners behind the writing process of ‘I Said I Love You First’.
Justin Bieber says ‘I think I hate myself sometimes’ in new social media post
Singer-songwriter Justin Bieber is shedding light on the importance of being his authentic self, and how he doesn’t like how he feels when he changes to “please people”.
The 31-year-old Grammy winner shared a video on Instagram of himself leaning over a keyboard while jamming out with a group of fellow musicians, reports ‘People’ magazine.
He appeared energetic and in good spirits. “I think I hate myself sometimes when I feel myself start to become inauthentic”, he wrote in the post’s caption, adding, “Then I remember we’re all being made to think we’re not enough but I still hate when I change myself to please people”. As per ‘People’, earlier in the day, the ‘Believe’ singer shared yet another personal reflection on the social media platform, revealing that he hopes to work on his “anger issues”. “I got anger issues too, but I wanna grow and not react so much smh (sic)”, he wrote. The message was accompanied by three photos: one of himself with his face partially obscured by a hoodie, one of the musician as a child and a final photo featuring his son, Jack Blues, born in August 2024.
Hollywood actress Jennifer Coolidge has shared that her Emmy-winning act in the OTT series 'The White Lotus' has transformed not just her career, but her dating life at 63.
The actress told 'The Sunday Times', "Even though I play a complete weirdo in 'White Lotus', cute guys come up to me. This is far better than 'American Pie' because people were really sad
