Death toll jumps to 128 in Hong Kong residential building fire

Hong Kong, Nov 28 (IANS) The death toll in a major fire that broke out at a residential complex in Hong Kong had jumped to 128, and may rise further, the HKSAR government said on Friday.

The FSD has dispatched a total of 304 fire engines and rescue vehicles, and used drones to monitor heat levels to prevent rekindling. The department has extinguished flames in four of the affected buildings and brought fire under control in the other three, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The residential area Wang Fuk Court consists of eight buildings, all of which were encased by green mesh and scaffolding due to a major renovation project. Three men responsible for the renovations were arrested earlier for suspected manslaughter, as the police investigation pointed to flammable materials covering the buildings as a possible cause for the rapid spread of fire. It is considered as the worst blazes Hong Kong has seen in decades. Earlier, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said in the small hours on Thursday that the fire at Wang Fuk Court has been gradually brought under control after firefighters' tireless efforts. Speaking at a press briefing, Lee

PM Anthony Albanese marries long-time partner Jodie Haydon

Farrell, Tony Burke, Richard Marles, Jim Chalmers, Tim Ayres and Jenny McAllister, as well as New South Wales MPs John Graham and Jo Haylen, attended the wedding.

Australian Opposition Leader Sussan Ley also conveyed her best wishes for the wedding.

"Congratulations to Anthony and Jodie! I wish them every happiness as they continue building their lives together,"

PM

Australian newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ley as saying shortly after the news broke.

The wedding capped a historic year for Albanese, coming just months after he led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory, securing a record 94 seats in the lower house.

Haydon has accompanied Albanese at numerous events over the years, including during his 2022 election campaign and again in May this year when his Labour

Party secured a strong majority. Albanese also thanked Haydon on election night, noting that she "probably wasn't expecting this to be in your life half a dozen years ago".

"I am so grateful for your support, your friendship and your love. You make me so happy, which matters, you have my heart, I love you, and I look forward to living our lives together," he said The wedding is PM Albanese's second; his previous 19-year marriage to former NSW politician Carmel Tebbutt ended in 2019.

Modi calls for rethinking on global development parameters, proposes path-breaking initiatives at G20 Summit

India's Indian Knowledge Systems initiative can form the base for this platform, he opined stating that the repository will document and share traditional wisdom that demonstrates time-tested models of sustainable living, ensuring that this knowledge is carried forward to future generations.

"I proposed a few actionables to realise our dream of allround growth. First among them is the creation of a G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository. India has a rich history in this regard. This will help us pass on our collective wisdom to further good health and wellbeing," said PM Modi. Proposing the second game-

changing 'G20-Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative', Prime Minister Modi noted that while the G20 has long shaped global finance and growth, prevailing models have deprived large populations of resources and driven the over-exploitation of nature, challenges felt acutely in Africa.

"Africa's progress is vital for global progress. India has always stood in solidarity with Africa. I am proud of the fact that it was during India’s G20 Presidency that the African Union became a permanent G20 member. Taking forward this spirit, India proposes a G20–Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative. Our collective goal should be to create 1 million

certified trainers in Africa within the next decade," PM Modi wrote on X.

The initiative will adopt a trainthe-trainers model across sectors, supported and financed by all G20 partners. The collective target is to create one million certified trainers in Africa over the next decade, who will then help skill millions of young people.

Another G20 Initiative proposed by PM Modi was on 'Countering the Drug–Terror Nexus' which called for attention to the rapid spread of lethal synthetic drugs such as fentanyl. The Prime Minister warned of their grave impact on public health, social stability, and global security.

PM Modi announces Australia-Canada-India technology and innovation partnership

(ACITI) Partnership today," the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi said the partnership will help deepen cooperation among the three democratic nations in key areas of technology and innovation.

"The initiative will deepen collaboration between democratic partners across three continents and three oceans in emerging technologies, support diversification of supply chains, clean energy and mass adoption of AI," he added.

The initiative aims to boost collaboration in emerging technologies, strengthen and diversify global supply chains, expand clean energy efforts, and promote the widespread use of artificial intelligence.

"We look forward to working together to guarantee a better future for the coming generations!" the Prime Minister added.

The announcement came on a day when PM Modi also called for a major rethink of global development parameters and

proposed the creation of a G20 initiative to counter the drugterror nexus, along with the formation of a global healthcare response team. These suggestions were part of India’s broader pitch to strengthen global cooperation and improve resilience against emerging challenges.

PM Modi said the ACITI Partnership will bring together three democratic nations across three continents to boost collaboration in emerging technologies.

Death toll jumps to 128 in Hong Kong residential building fire

mentioned that around 279 people are still missing. Twenty-nine remained hospitalised, including seven in critical condition. Lee said he was deeply saddened by the situation.

He said that from the outside, three buildings now showed no visible flames, while four others displayed only sporadic fire spots. Lee stressed that the government will mobilise all resources to fully support the rescue operations. He has instructed departments and

units to carry out comprehensive work, including extinguishing the fire, rescuing trapped residents, treating the injured, providing assistance and emotional support to families, and conducting a full investigation into the accident.

The Fire Services Department was notified of the accident at around 2:51 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Due to the fierce blaze, the department raised the alert to a No. 5 alarm fire at 6:22 pm local time. Rescue operations were still ongoing.

Govt implements landmark labour laws to ensure better deal for India’s workforce

Code, 2020 with effect from November 21, 2025 -- rationalising 29 existing labour laws.

The implementation of the four Labour Codes addresses the longpending need to move beyond colonial-era structures and align with modern global trends. With the implementation of the Labour Codes, it has now become mandatory for employers to issue appointment letters to all workers which provides written proof to ensure transparency, job security and fixed employment. Earlier no mandatory appointment letters were required.

At one of the temporary shelters, personnel from the Home Affairs Department, Civil Aid Service, Care Teams, and the Police Force worked together, each fulfilling their roles and coordinating efforts.

Lam Yick Kuen, a Tai Po Care Team member and district councillor, said that many organisations and individuals had voluntarily donated supplies, demonstrating solidarity and mutual care in times of crisis.

Under Code on Social Security, 2020 all workers including gig and platform workers will get social security coverage. All workers will get PF, ESIC, insurance, and other social security benefits. Earlier there was only limited security coverage.

Under the Code on Wages, 2019, all workers will receive a statutory right minimum wage payment which wages and timely payment will ensure financial security. Earlier minimum wages applied only to scheduled industries or employments; large sections of workers remained uncovered.

The Labour codes also ensure that employers must provide all workers above the age of 40 with a free annual health check-up and promote a timely preventive healthcare culture. Earlier there was no legal requirement for employers to provide free annual health check-ups to workers. The codes also make it mandatory for employers to provide timely wages, for ensuring financial stability, reducing work stress and boosting overall morale of the workers. Earlier there was no mandatory compliance for employers payment of wages.

The new law permits women to work at night and in all types of work across all establishments, subject to their consent and required safety measures. Women will also get equal opportunities to earn higher incomes – in high paying job roles. Earlier, women’s employment in night shifts and certain occupations was restricted.

The new codes also extend ESIC coverage and benefits Pan-India -- voluntary for establishments with fewer than 10 employees, and mandatory for establishments with even one employee engaged in hazardous processes.

Govt should do something bigger than ‘Op Sindoor’ to give befitting reply to Pak: 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks survivor

Mumbai, Nov 26 (IANS) A survivor of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Devika Rotawan, on Wednesday urged the government to take stronger and bigger action than 'Operation Sindoor' to give a befitting response to Pakistan.

Speaking to IANS, Devika Rotawan said, “It has been 17 years since 26/11, but for me, that night still feels the same. It doesn’t feel like 17 years have passed. Even today, it feels as though I experienced that night just moments ago. I can still see everything clearly. I can still feel the bullet wound in my leg. The fear of that night — that dark night is still deeply embedded in my mind. Every year may change for others, but

for me, it is just the passing of numbers. For those who lived through it, that moment remains frozen on that very day.”

Sharing her account of the night, she continued, “My father, my brother and I were travelling to Pune. We went from Bandra to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. We were sitting between platforms 12 and 13. Then my brother went to the washroom and my father said that after he returned, we would buy tickets. Suddenly, we heard the sound of explosions.

People started running in every direction. I saw blood pouring from people’s heads, arms and legs. I couldn’t understand what was happening.”

“Then I saw a man firing recklessly. He looked like he was enjoying it. As I started running, a bullet hit my leg. The police took me to a hospital, but as it was already full, I was shifted to another one. I was hospitalised for more than one-and-a half months,” she recalled.

Devika said she felt partially relieved when Ajmal Kasab, the lone captured terrorist, was

executed.

“I am happy that Kasab was hanged. I got justice, but it still feels incomplete. True justice will be served only when people like Kasab, who are still alive in Pakistan, are eliminated. Terrorism has not ended. I still feel no one is truly safe. Recently, we witnessed the Pahalgam attack and the blast in Delhi. Such incidents remind us that terrorism is still active.”

She added, “Our country gave a befitting reply with 'Operation Sindoor'. But that was just a small trailer — the full picture is yet to come. I urge the government to do something bigger than 'Operation Sindoor' so that Pakistan gets the message and terrorism finally ends.”

Devika also shared the hardships she and her family faced after the incident.

“My father received threats asking him to withdraw the case or else he would be killed. But he showed immense courage and said, ‘Come and do whatever you want — we will not back down.’”

Air pollution: Need solutions which work throughout year, not for short period, say experts

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS) Amid worsening air pollution in the national capital, health experts on Saturday emphasised the need for solutions that work throughout the year, and not for a short period.

Delhi’s air quality remained entrenched in the very poor category for the 15th consecutive day, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 338 at 7 a.m.

“We have reached an emergency in Delhi. The efforts to curb pollution cannot be only temporary, which may help

immediately for a little while, but long-term solutions to this city are urgently required,” Dr. Anant Mohan, Professor and Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders, AIIMS New Delhi, told IANS.

"We have to do something very urgently on this now at this stage," he added.

The city’s 24-hour average AQI on Friday stood at 369, extending Delhi’s persistent run of very poor air quality through half the month.

Forecasts from air-quality and weather agencies indicate that conditions are unlikely to undergo any significant improvement over the coming week, as meteorological factors remain largely unfavourable for the dispersion of pollutants.

“We talk about pollution when November and December come, and those three months we are

very active. We are thinking there is so much in the media, but even in the summer, the air quality is not good. Air quality remains suboptimal as compared to the global standards, even when the weather is fine,” said Dr Saurabh Mittal, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, AIIMS Delhi.

“We need to work on solutions that work throughout the year, not on a short period of time,” Mittal added.

The consistently unhealthy air levels are due to Delhi's geography and man-made factors, said the experts “The airshed for the IndoGangetic plains includes Delhi and has some of the highest pollution levels in the world. One reason is the unique geography of the region, which traps pollution during the winter months when winds slow.

Hind’ erupts after Rajya Sabha reminder on Parliamentary decorum

after the Rajya Sabha Secretariat reiterated that MPs must refrain from using expressions such as 'Vande Mataram' and 'Jai Hind' inside Parliament to maintain decorum, prompting sharp

reactions from the Opposition, which accused the BJP-led NDA of being uncomfortable with symbols of India's Independence and unity.

The controversy stems from a memorandum issued on November 24 ahead of the upcoming parliamentary session, reminding members to adhere to established norms.

The Parliament bulletin stated, "The decorum and the seriousness of the proceedings of the House require that there should be no 'Thanks', 'Thank

Red Fort blast probe: ISI’s Faisal Iqbal emerges as central figure, Pakistan’s role under lens

The ongoing probe into the Delhi Red Fort blast is closing in on the direct role played by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). An operation of such a massive magnitude that also included setting up the Faridabad module could not have been possible without institutional backing, an official said. It has now been established that a person named Faisal Iqbal was the one who played a major role in setting up the module. Iqbal, an Intelligence Bureau official says, is an ISI operative and he was roped in specifically to set up the module and orchestrate the operation which involved carrying at least 200 blasts.

While his Pakistani identity and the nature of job has been confirmed, the agencies are yet to ascertain whether he was operating out of Pakistan or Afghanistan. The ISI had planned on orchestrating this entire episode outside of Pakistan soil as they did not want the trail to lead up to them. As part of the probe, the agencies have been scanning and analysing the chats between

the module members and their handlers.

The agencies have learnt that three handlers were behind this incident. Each of these handlers were assigned different roles, but the most important one was managed by the ISI official, Faisal Iqbal. Iqbal, according to an official, gave instructions to the accused on how to set up Telegram channels. He even instructed them on how to remain discreet about the planning and also the setting up of the module. Officials suspect that the module was in the making since 2019. However, everything began to take shape in 2021 and by 2023, the module was fully operational. Another official said that the manner in which the module operated with such precision and managed not to come under the radar clearly suggests that a top ISI official was part of the operation.

It was very much on the model of the Mumbai 26/11 attack where the planning and the final part of the execution remained very secretive. This operation involved the top brass of the ISI and Pakistan armed forces. Each one of them was part of the planning, training, logistic planning and execution. It is only when professionals of such high levels are directly involved that an operation of such a scale can be executed.

Delhi blast accused doctor Shaheen Saeed’s terror network formed after 3rd marriage

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS) Coming from a modest middle-class family and building a career in medicine, Dr Shaheen Saeed's life took a dramatic and alarming turn when she became linked to the Delhi terror blast conspiracy after her association and later third marriage to a Kashmiri doctor, Dr Muzammil Shakeel.

You', 'Jai Hind', 'Vande Mataram' or any other slogans raised in the House."

Reacting strongly, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Abbas Haider said, "This is the same BJP government that was against India's freedom. Earlier, their parent organisation, the Hindu Mahasabha, consisted of people who always supported British rule... So it's not surprising that they have a problem with 'Jai Hind', because they have a problem with our country's Independence and unity.

According to an NDTV report citing investigative sources, Saeed's introduction to extremist networks began after the two got married in September 2023, a union that ultimately drew her into the world of radicalisation. Raised in Daliganj, a densely populated area of Lucknow, Saeed was known for her academic excellence. She completed her MBBS from Allahabad and later specialised in pharmacology. Her father, Syed Ahmad, is a government employee, and the family has long been regarded as an educated and socially respected household. Saeed's first marriage was to ophthalmologist Dr Zafar Hayat in 2003, with whom she had two children. However, the couple separated in late 2012, reportedly

due to professional pressures, career differences, and Saeed's desire to move abroad. The divorce significantly affected her, and she eventually withdrew from the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College in Kanpur, where she taught, abruptly discontinuing her duties and becoming untraceable for nearly eight years. Her job was terminated in 2021, and a subsequent second marriage to a textile businessman from Ghaziabad also ended unsuccessfully. It was during this period of personal instability that Muzammil Shakeel, her junior at Al-Falah University in Faridabad, entered her life. Their bond grew through daily interactions at the college and shared professional backgrounds. During interrogation, Shakeel revealed that the two were married in September 2023 at a mosque near Al-Falah University, where he offered a mahr of around Rs 6,000. Once they began living together, Saeed became involved with student groups and started engaging in religious activities.

AI 171 crash: 95 pc families received interim compensation, says Air India CEO

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Ninetyfive per cent of the families of the 171 Dreamliner, which crashed just minutes after take-off in Ahmedabad, have received interim compensation, said Air India CEO Campbell Wilson on Monday.

Air India Flight 171 en route from Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat to London Gatwick Airport in the UK crashed 32 seconds after takeoff on June 12. Of the 12 crew members and 229 passengers on board, only one passenger survived. On the ground, 19 people were killed, and 67 others were seriously injured.

“We continue to do all we can to support those who were affected. Ninety-five per cent of families have received their interim compensation,” Wilson told reporters at the company’s

Air India Training Academy in Gurugram.

“About 70 of the families have also received the ex gratia payment from the AI 171 memorial trust, with another 50 or so in the process of being dispersed, and we continue to reach out to the families of those affected, both as Air India and as Tata Sons, to offer the assistance and support that they might require.

“As we've said previously, our commitment to those who have had a loss, whether they were on ground or in the air, will continue for as long as it takes,” the CEO said.

Wilson stated that the compensation follows a “fair and well-managed process”.

The CEO noted that the “booking rates dropped in the first few months”, post the deadly crash, also “due to extraordinary external events, including crises in the Middle East”, among others. However, it “picked up later” and that “the volumes are back”.

He also spoke about how the company has been focusing on

the mental health of the crew, including the pilots, both before and after the crash.

“The mental health of all staff, the crew in particular, has obviously been important since privatisation. We have launched a number of initiatives in the past few years, whether it be professional psychologists on staff, whether it is the ability to contact a psychologist on third-party confidentiality, or the buddy programme set up in case somebody talks to a peer rather than a professional,” Wilson told IANS.

“We have testing and assessment at regular points during the induction and progression process. It continues to be something the industry focuses on and continues to try to strengthen,” he added.

Further, the CEO mentioned the number of courses now underway to ensure that the crew can converse and interact with people, regardless of how fussy they might be when it comes to food and beverage.

SIR a huge scam, Election Commissioner seems to be acting on instructions: Husain Dalwai

Mumbai, Nov 29 (IANS) Terming the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process a "huge scam", Congress leader Husain Dalwai on Saturday claimed that the Election Commission "seems to be acting on instructions".

Talking to IANS, Dalwai said: "There is a major case of vote theft in the SIR. The Election Commissioner seems to be acting on instructions. They follow the directions of Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and (Home Minister) Amit Shah. The SIR is a huge scam." Currently, the SIR exercise is

underway in 12 states and Union Territories, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh.

Four poll-bound states and UTs — Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry — are conducting the SIR in the current phase.

Assam, another election-bound state, will conduct a special revision later due to the ongoing finalisation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The current phase of the SIR will cover 50.99 crore voters.

Previous rounds were conducted in 2002 and 2003, except for 37 constituencies in Tamil Nadu, where the revision was carried out in 2005.

The second phase of the SIR will conclude on December 4. Claims

and objections may be filed between December 9 and January 8 after the publication of the draft roll. This will be followed by a notice period for hearings and verification.

On India's GDP growth, which rose to 8.2 per cent in Q2, Dalwai said: "How much of this is true and how much is false, only they know. Their surveys themselves are flawed. On one hand, inflation is rising, the dollar is strengthening, the rupee is falling, and yet they claim the GDP is increasing. What can one say?"

As per the latest data, the real GDP of India, adjusted for inflation, is estimated to grow by 8.2 per cent in Q2 of FY 2025-26 against the growth rate of 5.6 per cent during Q2 of FY 2024-25.

Air crisis: Aviation experts react as 6,000 Airbus A320 jets grounded for software update

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS)

Air travel across India and several other countries is set for widespread disruption this weekend after global aviation regulators ordered immediate software updates for the Airbus A320 family of aircraft amid concerns that solar radiation may

affect critical systems. Aviation experts have termed the situation “a major air crisis,” warning of possible repercussions for safety, tourism and business travel. Speaking to IANS, aviation expert Subhash Goyal said the scope of the issue was significant, both globally and domestically.

“There are over 6,000 Airbus A320 aircraft worldwide that could be affected, with around 250 in India. For the newer models, software updates take 2–3 hours, but for older A320s, updates may take 1–2 days. This is an air crisis which will affect both tourism and

Sambhal violence a thing of past, situation completely normal now: Jama Masjid chief on heightened security

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) One year after the violence that erupted during the Jama Masjid survey in Sambhal on November 24, 2024, the city is calm and peaceful. Zafar Ali, the President of Sambhal Jama Masjid on Monday said that the violence that engulfed the city last year is a thing of the past and that the situation remains completely normal now.

Zafar Ali, speaking to IANS said, “The incident of 24 November 2024 was unfortunate, but it is now a thing of the past. One year later, the city is completely normal. We have not issued any special instructions regarding namaz or any other arrangements. Everything will continue as usual. Hindus and Muslims are living together peacefully, and no unpeaceful matters are taking place.”

“Security forces are active in the locality to maintain peace, the police are doing their job, and we are doing ours. There are no changes in namaz proceedings; we all go for namaz just like before. I would like to urge my brothers to maintain peace and unity,” he added.

Residents echoed similar sentiments, praising the administration and security

measures implemented over the past year.

One local said, “Sambhal has never received such administration before. The way they handled the situation, the city was saved from a major tragedy.”

Another one added, “The administration is working very well, security forces are deployed everywhere, and people feel safe.”

To mark the anniversary, authorities have significantly tightened security across the district. The Sambhal Police remain on high alert, with additional forces deployed in sensitive areas.

A multi-layered security plan has been rolled out, including patrolling by RAF detachments, PAC personnel, and local police units. Area domination has been intensified around the Jama Masjid, and additional personnel are stationed at locations considered sensitive.

CCTV cameras have been installed at the site of last year’s violence and surrounding areas, with live monitoring from the Satyavrat Chowki control room. Officers are continuously coordinating with ground teams to ensure law and order remains intact.

The Jama Masjid in Sambhal, built during the reign of the first Mughal emperor Babur between 1526 and 1530, is one of three major mosques constructed during his rule, alongside the mosque at Panipat and the now-demolished Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

CM Stalin criticises Centre for ‘persistent neglect’ of Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Nov 29 (IANS) Tamil

business trades,” he said. Explaining the technical concern, Goyal added that the issue emerged after an incident involving a mid-air pitch-down of an Airbus A320. “This crisis suddenly arose because when an Airbus 320 was coming in, it suddenly went down mid-air. It is said that extra radiation is causing hits due to which these problems come. The ELAC system, when an aircraft switches over, can get affected,” he noted, referring to the Elevator Aileron Computer (ELAC), a key part of the flight control system.

Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday criticised the Centre for what he described as a "persistent neglect" of the state's rightful demands.

The Chief Minister, in a statement issued in Chennai, urged the Centre to provide "clear answers" to the state's MPs during the upcoming Parliament session.

He questioned how a government that proudly calls India the "world's largest democracy" could "repeatedly ignore" the voice of an entire state.

CM Stalin noted that Tamil Nadu's concerns had been conveyed through official letters, personal representations, and resolutions passed in the Legislative Assembly, yet the

Union government had "failed" to respond meaningfully.

"Is it right for the Union government to disregard the concerns of the people of Tamil Nadu?" he asked.

The Chief Minister pointed out that Tamil Nadu is one of the nation's highest contributors to the central tax pool, and therefore deserves respect and fairness.

Despite what he termed as the Centre's "acts of neglect", CM Stalin highlighted Tamil Nadu's strong economic performance, noting that the state recorded an impressive 11.19 per cent economic growth - one of the highest in the country.

Trump is the ultimate political pragmatist, says article on Russian state media

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) US

President Donald Trump has demonstrated a pragmatic, deal-driven approach to foreign and domestic politics, using negotiated settlements and unconventional envoys to pursue rapid, high-stakes outcomes, observed an article on Russia’s government-controlled news platform.

"Since his inauguration in January, Trump has endured ongoing criticism from portions his MAGA base – due in large part to his failure to end the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Trump won the presidency by promising to end these foreign conflicts, and his seeming inability to do so has alienated a segment of his core supporters,” contended Australian journalist Graham Hryce in the opinion piece. RT, earlier known as Russia Today, is funded and controlled by the state and serves as an international news television network.

The article credited Trump with brokering a temporary settlement to the Gaza crisis, advancing a 28-point plan for peace in Ukraine, and neutralising internal critics by trading concessions and strategic gestures. It also viewed Trump’s domestic agenda as “illiberal and authoritarian”, and referred to his inconsistency in the unexpected endorsement of New York City’s Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

The flip-flop was seen by the author as revealing “Trump’s essential pragmatism”. It referred to the Trump-Mamdani meeting by noting “During Mamdani’s campaign, Trump condemned him as a “100 per cent communist lunatic” and “total nut job” and endorsed his opponent, former Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo. Trump also threatened to cut off federal funds to New York if Mamdani was elected mayor", reminded the piece. “Thus when Trump invited Mamdani to the White House for a meeting last week, the mainstream media expected ideological fireworks,” it said, adding later that the President “stunned journalists by saying, ‘some of his ideas are really the same ideas that I have’.”

The opinion piece was headlined by RT “Trump is the ultimate political pragmatist”, with a deck saying “Whatever happens to the Ukraine peace plan, the US president has secured several key victories for himself”.

It contended that Trump’s administration has prioritized quick, visible results -- whether through ad hoc diplomacy or by delegating negotiations to non-traditional intermediaries -over conventional, institutionally anchored statecraft. Such quickfire solutions are mostly driven by short-term political gains and unconventional intermediaries and thus, risk undermining long-term stability, eroding institutional trust, and complicating alliance management. In the article, Russia is seen as one of the external actors that found President Trump’s recent diplomatic moves acceptable,

without expressing an explicit endorsement. It noted that the provisional Gaza settlement was "acceptable to" Russia and that the Ukraine plan is viable in part because of Russia’s battlefield position, which the author treated as creating conditions for a negotiated outcome. Hryce points out "domestic political context that caused Trump to intensify his attempts to finally resolve the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine".

According to him, “Trump’s latest attempt to end the conflict is based his 28-point peace plan announced last week. This resolution could not have been entertained by Biden – committed as he was to propping up the faltering Zelensky regime in order to conduct a proxy war with Russia,” thus echoing viewpoints somewhat similar as Moscow’s. The analysis identified several recurring tactics in Trump's playbook, such as use of unconventional envoys, where negotiations have been steered by business figures and political allies rather than career diplomats, reflecting a preference for deal-makers over diplomats. It noted leverage of domestic politics with foreign policy moves portrayed as responsive to domestic pressures -particularly the need to placate restive elements within Trump's political base -- rather than purely strategic calculations. Hryce also cited transactional concessions where the article pointed to symbolic gestures, such as the public handling of sensitive documents and selective disclosures, as tools to blunt internal criticism and reframe controversies in political terms.

Trump says he will visit China in April after ‘very good’ call with Xi Jinping

Washington, Nov 25 (IANS) US

President Donald Trump said that he will travel to China in April at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, announcing the visit in a social media post, following a “very good” phone conversation between the two leaders earlier in the day.

In his post on Truth Social, Trump said on Monday, that the call covered Ukraine, Russia, fentanyl, soybeans and “other farm products,” adding that the two sides had “done a good, and very important, deal for our Great Farmers — and it will only get better.” He said the conversation followed

their “highly successful” meeting in South Korea three weeks earlier and that both sides had made “significant progress” in keeping recent agreements “current and accurate.” Trump also announced that he would host the Chinese leader for a state visit in the United States later next year.

Chinese news agency Xinhua also confirmed the call and said Xi used the conversation to outline Beijing’s “principled position” on Taiwan, emphasising that Taiwan’s return to China is “an integral part of the post-war international order.”

It stated that Xi underlined that "China and the US fought side by side against fascism and militarism" and "should jointly safeguard the victorious outcomes of World War II."

Three killed as gunmen storm Pakistan’s paramilitary force headquarters in Peshawar

Peshawar (Pakistan), Nov 24 (IANS) Unidentified gunmen launched a coordinated attack on the Pakistan Frontier Constabulary (FC) Headquarters on Saddar Main Road in Peshawar on Monday, triggering two explosions in quick succession and sparking an intense gun battle inside the compound, local media reported.

Initial reports indicate that three security personnel were killed in the assault, which has plunged the high-security zone into lockdown.

The Pakistan Federal Constabulary is a federal paramilitary force under the Ministry of Interior, responsible for maintaining law and order throughout Pakistan.

According to early intelligence inputs, the assault began with a suicide blast at the main FC gate, followed by an IED explosion at a nearby motorcycle stand.

The twin detonations created widespread panic, allowing three to five unidentified assailants to storm the installation and engage security forces in close-quarters combat.

Security officials said the outer

perimeter of the FC Headquarters has been secured, with all access routes leading to Saddar and neighbouring areas sealed off. Reinforcements have been rushed to the site, and the compound remains under complete lockdown as troops advance cautiously through the interior to clear remaining threats.

Officials confirmed that two attackers have been neutralised so far, though the exact number of militants involved remains under assessment.

The ongoing exchange of fire suggests more assailants may still be holed up inside the facility. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

The attack comes just days after a suicide bomber targeted a police vehicle outside the district court in Islamabad on November 11, killing 12 people and injuring 27. A faction of the Tehreek-eTaliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for that strike, reiterating its demand for the imposition of Islamic law -- a call that has intensified concerns over the widening reach and growing boldness of insurgent groups across Pakistan.

India, Israel enter deeper trade and tech ties with FTA talks: Report

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on the Taiwan Strait.

According to the statement, Xi and Trump also discussed the war in Ukraine. Xi reiterated China’s support for “all efforts conducive to peace” and expressed hope that parties involved in the conflict would narrow differences and work toward a “fair, lasting and binding peace agreement.”

A senior Trump administration official confirmed the call but declined to specify which side initiated it, while The Wall Street Journal reported that Beijing arranged the conversation.

The call comes weeks after Trump and Xi met in Busan on October 30, their first in-person meeting since 2019, where the two governments agreed to a one-year tariff and export control truce.

Both sides said the meeting helped stabilise relations after a period of heightened tensions.

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS) India and Israel are strengthening their relations centred on trade talks, technology partnerships and strategic coordination, according to a new report.

The report from India Narrative said that the countries signing Terms of Reference in Tel Aviv to begin talks on a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) proves a new phase of enhanced bilateral ties has begun.

A new bilateral investment framework, and sectoral cooperation in areas like agritech, water, cyber, and defence is also underway, the report said. Officials on both sides are signalling a phased FTA—an “early harvest” first phase focusing on low-contention items and quick commercial gains, followed by a second, more ambitious round on sensitive sectors, it said.

Looking ahead, the “next phase” of India–Israel ties will likely be defined by how quickly the legal and institutional architecture being built now translates into real projects on the ground, according to the report.

A new Bilateral Investment Agreement (BIA) signed in 2025 offers investors improved legal comfort, including a shorter local-remedies period for Israeli investors and coverage of portfolio investments—which India has generally been cautious about.

The push comes as bilateral merchandise trade softened, with India’s exports to Israel falling to about $2.14 billion in 2024–25 and imports declined to roughly $1.48 billion, taking total trade to about $3.6 billion.

Israel is notably India's first Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD partner who is party to a modern BIA, indicating the relationship is being used as a testbed for more sophisticated capital-flow arrangements.

The report said that India should prioritise a phased FTA focused on high-tech goods, services and innovation. Further scaling pilot collaborations in agritech, water management and cyber space into national programs in India and deeper defence industrial cooperation should prioritised, the report said.

Seoul to set up special corporation for $350 billion investment in US

Seoul, Nov 26 (IANS) South Korea will 'temporarily' establish a strategic investment corporation that will operate a special fund for the country's $350 billion investment in the United States as agreed under a bilateral tariff deal finalised last month, the government said on Wednesday. The envisioned corporation, tentatively named Korea-U.S. Strategic Investment Corp., will be created for a maximum 20year operation under a special bill submitted by the ruling Democratic Party to support Seoul's investment plans in the U.S., the finance and industry ministries said in a joint press release, reports Yonhap news agency.

The government had aimed to submit the bill within this month

after President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump finalized the details of Seoul's $350 billion investment pledge, made in exchange for lower U.S. tariffs, during their summit in Gyeongju on Oct. 29. Under the final terms, the investment will consist of $200 billion in cash installments, with an annual cap set at $20 billion and an additional $150 billion for bilateral shipbuilding cooperation.

In return, the U.S. administration agreed to reduce the 25 percent tariffs on Korean automobiles to 15 percent, with the reduction to be applied retroactively from the start of the month the bill is submitted.

Shortly after the bill submission, Industry Minister Kim Jungkwan sent an official letter to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, informing the U.S. administration of such a move and calling for Washington's prompt publication of the retroactive application of lower tariffs on Korean cars on its Federal Register, according to Kim's office.

US President hints at running for 3rd term with ‘Trump 2028’ AI image

Washington, Nov 29 (IANS) US

President Donald Trump drew attention after posting an AIgenerated image on his Truth Social account showing him holding a blue sign that read “TRUMP 2028, YES!” The post was captioned “TRUMPLICANS!”, a blend of “Trump” and “Republicans.”

The image quickly renewed debate over the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two elected terms, and whether Trump is attempting to signal interest in a future campaign beyond that limit.

The post comes nearly ten months into Trump’s second nonconsecutive term, which began on

January 20, 2025, as he works with a Republican-controlled Congress to advance his “America First 2.0” agenda, including an immigration crackdown and higher tariffs on major trading partners.

The “Trump 2028” message, already appearing on merchandise and in subtle references during public events, has become a recurring element of his second term.

In September, Trump posted pictures of "Trump 2028" hats placed on his desk during an Oval Office meeting with Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer.

In October, House Speaker and prominent Republican leader Mike Johnson downplayed the possibility and claimed the president was just having a “good time…trolling” "There is the 22nd Amendment...I think the president knows. And he and I have talked about the constrictions of the Constitution," he told reporters at a news conference.

Trump also appeared to acknowledge that he could not run again.

"I'm not allowed to run, it's too bad," he said last month.

A new McLaughlin and Associates survey shows Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

The envisioned investment corporation, to be established with government funding, will be tasked with creating, managing and operating the Korea-U.S. strategic investment fund, the ministries said.

The fund's resources will be raised through earnings from foreign exchange reserves entrusted by the government and the Bank of Korea, and through overseas issuance of governmentguaranteed bonds, they explained. The government said the special bill stipulates that related authorities must comply with safeguard measures specified in the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the investment pledge signed by the two countries.

The safeguard measures include the $20 billion annual cap on investments, adjustments to the amount and timing of the investment when it is feared to cause instability in Korea's foreign exchange market, selection of "commercially reasonable" projects and others.

Death toll from Vietnam flooding rises to 98

Hanoi, Nov 26 (IANS) The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in Vietnam's central region has risen to 98, with 10 others still missing, the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority said in a report on Wednesday.

More than 2,000 houses were damaged, and 426 others collapsed, according to the report.

The floods submerged over 51,800 hectares of rice and other crops, and killed or swept away more than 920,800 poultry and livestock, reports Xinhua news agency.

The economic losses are estimated at over 14.3 trillion Vietnamese dong (about 570 million US dollars), the authority said.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called for stepping up response measures to severe flooding and natural disasters in the central provinces.

The Vietnamese government has

provided emergency aid worth 700 billion Vietnamese dong (about 26.6 million US dollars) to certain hard-hit regions for recovery efforts, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Vietnam's government has approved an emergency relief fund of 450 billion Vietnamese dong (about 17.93 million USD) to support four cities and provinces in central Vietnam in their recovery efforts, including Hue, Da Nang, Quang Tri, and Quang Ngai.

Over 28,400 houses remain inundated, while 946 others have been damaged, according to the report.

Power has been restored for most affected areas, with around 75,000 households still without electricity.

Earlier in August, eight people died, and three others remained missing following flash floods and landslides in Vietnam's northern province of Dien Bien, local media reported.

Around 60 houses had been swept away or damaged by floodwaters, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority.

Shooting fallout: Prez Trump announces plan to halt migration from Third World nations

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) Days after an Afghan national allegedly opened fire at two National Guard members near the White House, US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping immigration decision, stating he intends to “permanently pause migration from all Third World countries.”

The proposed move, if implemented, could significantly affect millions seeking entry into the US for education, work, safety or asylum, and may reshape global migration patterns.

In a sharply-worded post on Truth Social on Thursday, President Trump stated that while the United States has advanced technologically, immigration policies over the years have weakened the country’s progress and impacted living standards. He wrote: "I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the US system to fully recover, terminate all of the millions of Biden illegal admissions, including those signed by Sleepy Joe Biden's

Autopen, and remove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States, or is incapable of loving our Country, end all Federal benefits and subsidies to noncitizens of our Country, denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility, and deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization."

According to President Trump, the objective behind the policy is to dramatically reduce what he called “illegal and destabilizing populations.”

He argued that the only effective long-term solution is what he termed “reverse migration.”

Ending his statement, President Trump wrote: “Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation. Other than that, HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL, except those that hate, steal, murder, and destroy everything that America stands for - You won't be here for long."

Earlier, US Customs and Immigration Service Director Joseph Edlow said on Thursday that under President Trump’s orders, he has “directed a fullscale, rigorous re-examination of every Green Card for every alien from every country of concern”. India is not on the list of countries of concern, nor are others from South Asia, except for Afghanistan. The actions followed Wednesday’s

shooting rampage by Rahmanullah Lakanwal near the White House.

One of the National Guard soldiers he shot, Sarah Beckstrom, died on Thursday, while the other is in a critical condition in a hospital. Lakanwal, who was injured before his capture, is also in hospital. Soon after the shooting, President Trump said, “We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan”.

Under the broadened scrutiny announced by Eldow, several hundred thousand Green Card holders from the 19 countries will be put under “rigorous reexamination”.

President Trump had put those countries under a watch list in June and restricted the issuing of visas to their citizens, expressing concern over the ability of the US to vet the applicants from there. The other countries on the list are Burma, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. Lakanwal, who had worked with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Afghanistan, came to the US under programmes to protect Afghans who had cooperated with the US when the Taliban took over.

Researchers in Australia reveal progressive, regional brain changes in Parkinson’s disease

Canberra, Nov 25 (IANS)

Researchers in Australia have found that Parkinson's disease causes significant and progressive changes in the brain's blood vessels, changing the understanding of the disease, which may open up new treatment avenues.

While Parkinson's disease is characterised by alpha-synuclein protein deposits, this research has shifted understanding of the disease, demonstrating that region-specific changes to blood vessels in the brain underlie disease progression,

Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) said in a media release on Tuesday.

"Traditionally, Parkinson's researchers have focused on protein accumulation and neuronal loss, but we have shown the impacts on our cerebrovasculature -- the blood vessels in our brain," said NeuRA postdoctoral student Derya Dik, who carried out the work.

"Our research identified regionspecific changes in the brain's blood vessels, including an increased presence of string vessels, which are non-functional remnants of capillaries," Dik said.

NeuRA researchers, in collaboration with the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney, also observed changes relating to how blood flows in the brain and how the blood-brain barrier operates, according to the findings, published in Brain, reports Xinhua news agency.

Researchers believe that targeting these progressive, region-specific changes may be able to slow

disease progression and improve outcomes for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. The researchers are now investigating whether similar cerebrovascular changes are present in post-mortem brain tissue from individuals with Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies tissue, the media release said.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Parkinson's disease (PD) is a brain condition that causes problems with movement, mental health, sleep, pain and other health issues. "PD gets worse over time. There is no cure, but therapies and medicines can reduce symptoms. Common symptoms include tremors, painful muscle contractions and difficulty speaking. Parkinson's disease results in high rates of disability and the need for care. Many people with PD also develop dementia," the WHO mentioned.

Australian airports thrown into chaos as Airbus A320 planes recalled worldwide

Sydney, Nov 29 (IANS) Passengers across Australian airports were thrown into chaos on Saturday after plane maker Airbus issued an urgent software update affecting one of the world's most popular aircraft.

Passengers flying with Australia's Jetstar Airways have been advised to expect significant delays due to a global recall of thousands of A320 aircraft. Jetstar has cancelled or delayed about 90 flights while

developed.

Qantas confirmed its new Airbus A321xlr planes are not affected. Adding to the delays and difficulties re-accommodating passengers, a fire broke out at a terminal at Melbourne Airport in Victoria overnight. It was a busy weekend of travel ahead of schoolies week celebrations.

In a noisy Melbourne terminal packed with nervous travelers, Jetstar chief pilot Tyrone Simes said about 90 flights were affected on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Explaining the problem, he said a flight control computer on board the affected planes had "shown an anomaly," adding this was a result of a recent software upgrade.

‘good friend’ Albanese, wishes Australian PM ‘happy married life’

New Delhi/Canberra, Nov 29

(IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated "good friend" Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia, on getting married while wishing the newly-wedded couple a happy married life.

"Congratulations to my good friend, PM Anthony Albanese and Ms. Jodie Haydon on their

wedding. Wishing them a happy married life," PM Modi wrote in a congratulatory message on X.

Earlier in the day, the Australian Prime Minister announced his marriage to partner Jodie Haydon in a private ceremony at The Lodge in Canberra, making him the first Australian leader to wed while in office.

"We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends," Albanese and Haydon said in a joint statement Saturday morning.

Albanese also posted a brief video of the celebration on X with a one-word caption, "Married."

Australian govt announces funding boost for domestic violence support helpline

Canberra, Nov 25 (IANS) The Australian government on Tuesday announced an almost 40 per cent funding boost for the national domestic, family and sexual violence support service in response to growing demand for support services.

Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek, Minister for Women Katy Gallagher, and Assistant Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence Ged Kearney announced an additional 41.8 million Australian dollars (about 27.03 million US dollars) in funding to expand the capacity of 1800RESPECT, which offers free information, counselling and support to Australians impacted by domestic, family or sexual violence, reports Xinhua news agency.

This brings the funding for 1800RESPECT to 146.8 million Australian dollars until June 30, 2027.

Since its inception in 2010, 1800RESPECT has seen contacts

with the service increase by over 3,000 per cent. In the 12 months to June 2025, the service received more than 342,000 calls, video calls, online chats and texts, and demand is expected to continue to grow as more Australians recognise the signs of violence and seek support.

The ministers said in a joint statement that the additional funding will help ensure 1800RESPECT can continue providing trauma-informed, accessible support for people experiencing family, domestic and sexual violence.

The announcement of the funding was made to coincide with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, they added. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in six Australian women and one in 18 men have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or former cohabiting romantic partner since the age of 15.

Family and domestic violence incidents accounted for 55 per cent of all recorded assaults in Australia in 2023, and 43 per cent of recorded murders were related to family and domestic violence.

Australia: One dead in western Sydney shooting

Sydney, Nov 28 (IANS) A man has died after being shot multiple times on a street in western Sydney on Friday.

According to the local media, several leaders, including many senior ministers including Penny Wong, Mark Butler, Katy Gallagher, Don Farrell, Tony Burke, Richard Marles, Jim Chalmers, Tim Ayres and Jenny McAllister, as well as New South Wales MPs John Graham and Jo Haylen, attended the wedding.

Australian Opposition Leader Sussan Ley also conveyed her best wishes for the wedding.

"Congratulations to Anthony and Jodie! I wish them every happiness as they continue building their lives together," Australia's Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ley as saying shortly after the news broke.

Police in the Australian State of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement that officers were deployed to reports of a public place shooting on a residential street in Blacktown, 30 kilometres west of central Sydney, around 11:50 am on Friday, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Officers arrived and found a man with gunshot wounds to his neck, chest and leg.

He was treated by ambulance paramedics, but died at the scene.

NSW Police said that officers initiated a pursuit when a vehicle seen leaving the scene failed to stop.

The vehicle crashed a short time later and two occupants who ran from the scene were arrested and taken to a nearby police station.

A crime scene has been established and police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

On October 31, two people have been hospitalised with gunshot wounds following a drive-by shooting south of Brisbane.

The police service in the Australian state of Queensland said in a statement that emergency services were alerted that two people had been injured in a shooting in the suburb of Park Ridge, 26 km south of Brisbane, at around 1:20 am on Friday.

An 18-year-old man was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition, and a 20-year-old woman was hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The Queensland Police Service said the pair were injured when gunshots were fired from a passing vehicle into a residence and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Earlier on October 16, police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) had said in a statement that emergency services were called to reports of a fire in Cabramatta, 26 km west of central Sydney, at around 12:45 am local time.

Strategic significance of transparency

New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) A democratic order is the best form of governance because it promotes transparency, that makes it possible to fix accountability. Accountability is necessary to run a corruptionfree system that was primarily dependent on right decisions and transparency helped the scrutiny of the decision-making process. Execution of a decision can be marred by inefficiency, neglect or corruption and here also, transparency of the processes, including adherence to timelines and rules, could prove to be of great importance. Further, performance at any level involved effective supervisionthe role of supervisors often goes unscrutinised- and transparency was required to make it possible to examine this aspect of the organisational functioning too. Anti-corruption bodies themselves fail to produce deterrence if their performance was not subjected to scrutiny from outside. An independent highpowered watch body outside of the political executive was necessitated because of the growing perception that there was a political-bureaucratic nexus as brought out by the Vohra Committee report way back in 1993. The reports of the numerous Administrative Reforms Commissions(ARCs) on delegation of decisionmaking, restricting the number of levels through which a file would pass for reaching the final decision and creation of inter-disciplinary teams to address cross-cutting issues in a transparent way, had not been implemented. It goes to the credit of Modi regime that interministerial coordination had vastly improved and preceded the placing of any matter before the cabinet according to a timeline.

There is an inherent contradiction between confidentiality and transparency and the former has to be practised within rules that gave it legitimacy. The RTI Act 2005 deals with this matter and strikes a balance between transparency and confidentiality- for the sake of the nation, the society and the individual. There is a provision in the Act saying that

notwithstanding anything in the Official Secrets Act or any of the exemptions permissible in RTI Act, a public authority may allow access to information if ‘public interest in disclosure outweighs the harm to the protected interests’.

The 1967 exemptions from disclosures granted by OSA stand in the RTI Act as well since they related to matters pertaining to ‘sovereignty and integrity of India’, security of the State or friendly relations with other countries. Maintenance of secrecy of information requires ‘Security Classification’ which in turn defines the ‘Restrictive Security’ or the ‘Need to Know’ parameters for accessing it.

It may be mentioned that a job that called for handling of secret information, required a certain amount of mental strength and it did not belong to people who were credulous, who lacked self-discipline or who did not have the ability to distinguish between an authoritative opinion and gossip. All of this highlights the strategic significance of transparency in the context of the governance of a democratic state.

This is the era of proxy wars and one way of damaging a target country without recourse to an ‘open’ warfare, is to attack its economic strength and assets. Warren Christopher, Bill Clinton’s Secretary of State famously said in 1993 that ‘ National security was inseparable from economic security’. Pak ISI chose Mumbai for 26/11 attack for it is the economic capital of India. It follows, therefore, that any enterprise that gave economic strength to the country must have a set up of professionally trained people to safeguard its security and handle what is termed as ‘insider threat management’.

The latter is what brings together the functions of Vigilance and Security because a corrupt employee can fall for the enemy’s designs more easily. Both these functions are now to be integrated with the mainline management because the source of ‘insider threat’ may be hibernating in any part of the enterprise making it incumbent on Vigilance and Security to have a thorough knowledge of how the organisation was run and how were its operations conducted. This validates the principle that Security and Vigilance must derive their authority from the person at the top.

New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) A few days ago, Jammu and Kashmir

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah remarked that an impression was being created across the country that all Kashmiris were somehow responsible for what happened in Delhi.

He even added that "it feels like a crime to drive a vehicle with a Jammu and Kashmir registration number". His words were not merely an expression of anguish. They appeared to be a calibrated attempt to highlight the divide that mainstream Kashmiri politicians have long leaned on for relevance.

If Omar Abdullah spoke cautiously, People's Democratic Party chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti went several steps further. She accused the Central government of creating a "poisonous atmosphere" that, according to her, contributed to the blast near the Red Fort.

While addressing a public meeting in Srinagar, she claimed that the Centre's actions had pushed Kashmiri youth onto a "dangerous path".

Mufti's comments were unambiguous: "These people say that everything is fine in Kashmir,” she said, “but the problems of Kashmir were expressed in front of the Red Fort in Delhi."

Such statements from leaders who have helmed the state may sound shocking to those unfamiliar with the Valley's political culture. But in truth, these remarks are neither isolated nor sudden. For decades, a section of Kashmir's political leadership has thrived on duality - one message for Delhi, another for the Valley. This double-speak has sometimes slipped into openly provocative rhetoric, occasionally bordering on antinationalism. And therein lies the deeper tragedy of Kashmir: leaders who have shaped the region's destiny have rarely tried to bridge divides; instead, they have often reinforced them. It remains an uncomfortable but undeniable fact that the old psychological chasm - "us and them", or the belief that India begins only beyond the Banihal tunnel - continues to persist in the Valley.

The abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 did not erase that mindset. It could not, because political,

religious, and social influencers in Kashmir have never truly attempted to dismantle such divisive thinking. If anything, they have kept it alive in different forms and tones, depending on political need.

This pattern dates back to the foundational years of Independent India. When Sheikh Abdullah negotiated Kashmir's relationship with India in 1947, he secured significant autonomy, a bargain that shaped the Valley's politics for generations.

The partnership crafted with Jawaharlal Nehru, a co-Kashmiri and the first Prime Minister of India, laid the seeds of separatist politics. It gave rise to a political structure that nurtured a sense of difference rather than integration.

Over time, this autonomy evolved into a narrative of separateness, ultimately becoming fertile ground for separatist politics. What began as political autonomy gradually turned into a narrative of difference, a narrative that many leaders nurtured and exploited over subsequent decades.

By the early 1970s, that narrative was no longer just political posturing. In 1971, an Indian Airlines Fokker F27 aircraft named 'Ganga' was hijacked by Kashmiri separatists Hashim Qureshi and Ashraf Qureshi to Lahore, where the plane was eventually burned.

The hijackers were members of the National Liberation Front, the group that later evolved into the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). It was a precursor to the violence that would engulf the Valley years later, and an event that signalled the direction Kashmir’s politics was heading.

But it was the late 1980s that marked a turning point.

What began as political alienation exploded into fullscale terrorism, enabled and weaponised by Pakistan. However, separatism in Kashmir has rarely been about the dream of an independent homeland. Its ideological core has been rooted in religious extremism -- the drive to create an Islamic Kashmir and complete Pakistan's "unfinished agenda of partition".

Since 1989, terrorism in the Valley has pursued two clear objectives: to forcibly drive out Hindus and seize their properties, and to establish an Islamist order.

Sadly, both goals have been nearly achieved. The ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits remains one of the darkest chapters in modern Indian history. The Valley’s demographic reality has changed little even after Article 370 was scrapped; few displaced families have returned.

In the past few years, the Valley has witnessed infrastructural development, renewed tourism, and improved security. But the April 22 Pahalgam attack once again exposed the simmering trouble beneath the surface.

Shockingly, many of those involved were local boys. Now, the same youth who once operated within the confines of the Valley are stepping into the plains of India, seeking to create chaos there as well.

The involvement of local boys exposes how deeply radicalisation continues to simmer beneath the surface. The shock only deepened when one of the perpetrators, Dr Umar Muhammad, released a chilling video before blowing himself up near the Red Fort. Here was a young doctor -- educated, well-off, secure -- justifying suicide bombing as a religious virtue. He was not a product of poverty or deprivation. Yet he succumbed to radicalisation -- a clear sign of how deeply extremist narratives have penetrated the Valley’s social fabric. He was a product of ideological indoctrination. And that raises a crucial question: why have the political and religious leaders who loudly criticise the Centre done nothing to counter the radical and extremist narratives that spread among Kashmiri youth? Instead of challenging these ideas, many leaders amplify sentiments of alienation and grievance. Instead of reforming mindsets, they reinforce divides for political convenience.

Kashmir is in trouble, and the blame lies squarely with its political, religious, and social leadership. For decades, they have failed to break the psychological barrier of the Banihal tunnel. Rather than bridging the divide, they have nurtured it -- sometimes for relevance, sometimes for vote banks, and sometimes for sheer political expediency. They have stoked division when healing was needed, exploited fear when clarity was required, and nurtured grievances when responsibility was essential. What Kashmir faces today is not merely a security issue. It is the cumulative result of years of deceit, duplicity, and failed leadership, whether political or religious.

The Barlow Affair of 1806: A parliamentary crisis over patronage and the governance of India

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Of all the political tempests that swirled around the governance of British India, few reveal the intricate power struggles between the Crown, its ministers, and the East India Company as starkly as the recall of Sir George Barlow in 1806. This was not merely the removal of an official; it was a constitutional flashpoint that pitted the established rights of the Company against the asserted prerogative of the King, sparking fierce debate in Parliament and sending ripples of uncertainty through the administration in Calcutta. The matter became a crucible for defining the very nature of British authority in its burgeoning Eastern Empire.

The Matter of the Recall: A Swift Appointment and an Abrupt Reversal

Following the death of the esteemed Marquis Cornwallis in October 1805, Sir George Barlow, as the senior member of the supreme council, stepped into the role of Governor-General of India. An experienced Company servant, he was widely respected and moved quickly to continue the pacific and economical policies of his predecessor. His administration was seen as highly credible, particularly for concluding peace treaties with the Maratha chiefs Scindia and Holkar.

Recognising the need for stability during these delicate negotiations, His Majesty's ministers in London acted to confirm his position. On February 25, 1806, they recommended to the Court of Directors that Barlow be granted the full powers of Governor-General, a move the Directors "readily and cheerfully complied with". This decision was met with "great joy in Leadenhall-

street," as Barlow was a man held in high esteem, with numerous testimonials to his merit. However, this official confidence proved remarkably fleeting. Within a mere ten days to two weeks of this confirmation, the government intimated its wish to have him recalled. On May 12, a formal recommendation was made to the Directors to recall Barlow and appoint Lord Lauderdale in his place. When the Directors resisted this move, the ministry advised the King to exercise his prerogative under the 1784 India Act. By the end of May, Sir George Barlow was formally recalled by an instrument under the royal sign manual. In the House of Lords, Lord Minto, President of the Board of Control, confirmed that orders had been issued to "vacate the commission," officially superseding Sir George Barlow. This sudden reversal, after a formal appointment had been made at the ministry's own recommendation, became the central matter of the ensuing parliamentary storm.

The Company's Stand: A Defence of Merit and Stability

The East India Company's Court of Directors stood firmly against the recall. Their position, championed in Parliament by figures like Lord Melville, was built on several key arguments:

-A System of Patronage over Merit: The primary objection was that the recall was "driven by patronage, not public good". Critics argued that ministers were not acting on any policy disagreement with Barlow, who was successfully implementing the desired pacific system, but were simply seizing an opportunity to install their own political appointee. This was seen as a violation of the spirit of the 1784 Act, which was intended to give the Crown a negative check on improper Company appointments, not a tool to force its own choice into the role.

-The Alienation of Company Servants: The recall was viewed as a profound insult to the dedicated servants of the Company. It sent a demoralising message that the highest office in India was unattainable for them, reserved instead for "men of rank in this country". This, it was argued, would degrade and alienate all Company men, who held

Sir George in high esteem and had seen his appointment as a validation of their own career paths. Lord Cornwallis himself had expressed a wish that Barlow should be his successor.

-Creating Pernicious Instability: Removing a successful GovernorGeneral in the midst of critical negotiations and financial retrenchments created a "virtual absence of a government general". This leadership vacuum was seen as highly pernicious to the stability of India at a delicate moment.

-A Contradiction of their Own Actions: The Directors and their allies pointed to the government's glaring inconsistency. Having first recommended extending Barlow's powers, only to demand his recall within weeks, the ministry's actions appeared capricious and unjust. The Directors had "readily and cheerfully complied" with the first request, only to be met with a demand for recall that they strongly resisted.

The British Government's Stand: Prerogative and Responsibility His Majesty's ministers, led in the debate by Lord Grenville and Lord Henry Petty, defended their actions on strong constitutional and political grounds:

-The Crown's Undoubted Prerogative: The government's central argument was that the 1784 Act was clear and explicit: it vested the power of recall in the King at his discretion. Lord Grenville stated it was "clearly in his recollection" from the original debates that this power was intended for ministers to use. To argue otherwise was to engage in "fanciful interpretations" of a plain law.

-The Right to Confidence: Ministers asserted that, being responsible for the entire British empire, they had a right and a duty to appoint a GovernorGeneral in whom they had confidence. The government of India was compared to that of Ireland; it was argued to be as natural for ministers to choose the governor for one as the viceroy for the other. Sir G. Barlow, they argued, did not possess their personal confidence.

-A Temporary Appointment: Crucially, the government claimed the initial confirmation of Barlow was never intended

to be permanent. Secretary Fox stated the appointment was made merely to "prevent the inconvenience of any interregnum in India" following Lord Cornwallis's death, as the new administration had only just been formed. It was framed as a temporary measure to ensure continuity, not a lasting commitment.

The Indian Perspective: The Impact of Distant Power-Plays While the sources are British parliamentary debates and thus do not contain direct Indian voices, they allow for a clear discernment of how this Londoncentric power struggle would have affected India.

-Political Instability: The most immediate impact was the creation of a leadership vacuum at the highest level of British authority. For native states like those of the Maratha, who were in the process of finalising peace treaties, this abrupt change would have created profound uncertainty. The sudden removal of the man who had just concluded peace with them could have been interpreted as a reversal of British policy, potentially undermining the very treaties meant to secure tranquillity.

-A Conflict of Systems: The debate in London was a proxy for a debate about the entire system of governing India. Barlow was seen as the inheritor of Lord Cornwallis's pacific system, a direct repudiation of the aggressive expansionism of Marquis Wellesley, which had caused "universal estrangement of all descriptions of the natives".

The recall demonstrated that the direction of Indian policy—whether of conquest or conciliation—was subject to the political whims and patronage battles of a distant government, rather than the perceived realities and needs within India itself.

-Devaluation of Experience: The core message sent to the entire British administrative and military apparatus in India was that deep, on-the-ground experience was secondary to political connection in London.

The recall of Barlow, a man who had spent most of his life in the Company's service and was deeply knowledgeable about its affairs, to be replaced by a

"noble lord high in His Majesty's councils," established a clear precedent. This could only serve to demoralise the Company's servants, who were the ones implementing British rule across the subcontinent, and reinforce the perception of them as mere functionaries of a remote and disconnected power.

Sir George Barlow: A Man Caught Between Systems

The debate also brought Sir George Barlow's own record into focus, revealing him as a figure who represented the complexities of Company service. On one hand, he was lauded for his experience, his integrity, and his faithful execution of Lord Cornwallis's pacific system. Even Lord Cornwallis himself had expressed a wish that Barlow should be his successor.

On the other hand, critics pointed out that for eight years, Barlow had been a zealous supporter of the very different, expansionist system of Marquis Wellesley. Mr Francis charged him with a "dereliction of his duty" for having acquiesced in Wellesley's measures, which the Court of Directors had condemned. His defenders argued that his shift in policy under Cornwallis was not "mean compliance" but a reflection of his "sense of duty" upon learning the clear intentions of the authorities at home. In conclusion, the recall of Sir George Barlow was a landmark event that transcended the career of one man. It was a decisive moment where the British government asserted its direct political authority over the East India Company, using the Crown's prerogative to enforce its choice for the empire's most powerful overseas post. For the Company, it was a bitter confirmation of their diminishing autonomy. For the government, it was a necessary exercise of ministerial responsibility. And from an Indian perspective, it was a stark illustration of how the fate of millions could be swayed by political machinations thousands of miles away, creating instability and uncertainty at the very heart of the empire.

‘Worked very hard’: Australian envoy on ensuring safety and welfare of Indian students Down Under

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS)

Expressing the Anthony Albanese-led government's longstanding support for continued migration and having a multicultural Australia, the country's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green has said that Canberra has worked hard on ensuring the safety and welfare of Indian students.

In an interview with IANS, Green also expressed Canberra's intent to strengthen academic collaboration with India while citing the scholarship offerings

for Indian students by several Australian universities.

When asked about steps being taken to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian students in Australia, Green responded, "We worked very hard on this. As you may know, Australia is one of the safest countries on Earth, and we are proud of that. We want all visitors to our country, be they Indian or be they from other countries, indeed our own people to be safe and we have a very strong and effective police force, a border force, and a very effective

security intelligence agencies. We also want to make sure that Indian visitors to our country feel welcome."

Earlier this year, 'March for Australia' protests were held Down Under with thousands of people participating in rallies in major Australian cities and regional centres, carrying flags and demanding an end to what they termed as "mass migration" into Australia.

"Now, like in many countries, in Australia there have been protests, rather loud, small

numbers of people who are protesting against immigration and against multiculturalism. What I want you and your viewers to know is that our government has very clearly come out and said that we stand for continued migration into Australia in a way that is sustainable and we very much stand for a multicultural Australia in which people, wherever they come from the world, feel safe and welcome and are indeed celebrated in our society," Green told IANS.

On new scholarship opportunities and academic collaboration plans with the Indian institutions, the Australian diplomat emphasised: "There's a lot. So, many Australian universities have scholarship offerings for Indian students. And what is new is the Australian government is now providing around 15 scholarships to students at the PhD level. This is particularly focused in STEM, so science and technology is very much foregrounded here.

Mumbai, Nov 26 (IANS) Japanese furniture and stationery maker, Kokuyo Co., Ltd. (Read: Kokuyo), has completed the rebranding of its India business, HNI India, to Kokuyo Workplace India Limited. Kokuyo is Japan's first company to enter India's office furniture segment.

With this strategic move, Kokuyo India business is targeting 1520 per cent growth over FY24, with an accelerated trajectory expected once the integration is complete. The rebranding marks a key milestone in Kokuyo’s effort to position India as a central growth hub in its Asia-Pacific operations.

The rebranding follows Kokuyo’s acquisition of HNI India earlier this year, marking a pivotal step in the company’s strategy to

merge Japanese craftsmanship with Indian market dynamism.

The move aligns with Kokuyo’s long-term global vision of CCC 2030 (Change, Challenge, Create) and commitment to designled growth, innovation, and customer-centric transformation across the region.

Kokuyo India plans to deepen its presence in top metros and emerging business hubs by 2030. The company unveiled its new identity at Orgatec India 2025 in Mumbai earlier this month, with next-generation solutions designed to promote collaboration, agility, and wellbeing.

The global office furniture market is expected to grow at a 6-8 per cent CAGR through 2030, with Asia-Pacific accounting for over a quarter of global revenues. India is among the fastestgrowing markets, driven by corporate expansion, hybrid work adoption, and increased focus on ergonomics and sustainability. With a 350,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Nagpur and a 120-year heritage, Kokuyo continues to redefine workplaces worldwide through kaizen (continuous improvement), creativity, and functionality. The company plans further investments in design innovation across all product categories and sustainability-focused manufacturing, reinforcing its “Make in India, for the World” vision.

With brands such as Camlin, Lamex, ACTUS, ESTIC, and Formax in its portfolio, Kokuyo India aims to bring global design sensibilities to local workplaces, combining Japanese minimalism with Indian adaptability.

PM Modi said that this is also what we are working towards in India, seen in broad participation in areas such as digital payments, space technology and AI.

The Prime Minister said that India’s approach to AI is based on the three pillars of equitable access, population-scale skilling, and responsible deployment.

“India’s AI Mission is working

towards ensuring that the benefits of AI reach every part of India, including every district and language,” he said.

PM Modi pointed out that it must be ensured that AI is used for global good and its misuse is prevented.

New electricity amendment bill set to modernise India’s power sector

New Delhi, Nov 22 (IANS) The government on Saturday said that the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 introduces key reforms to modernise India’s power sector, promoting competition in distribution, strengthening regulatory oversight, and supporting fair pricing mechanisms.

The Bill was brought forward to resolve deep-rooted inefficiencies, like persistent financial losses in distribution companies (discoms) due to poor billing efficiency, high aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses; lack of competition in electricity supply, with consumers tied to a single discom, limiting service quality and innovation; and

cross-subsidisation distortions, where industrial users pay inflated tariffs to subsidise other categories, making Indian manufacturing less competitive. According to an official document, it facilitates regulated competition in electricity distribution, allowing multiple licensees to operate in the same area using shared and optimized infrastructure.

The Bill also mandates Universal Service Obligation (USO) for all licensees, ensuring non-discriminatory access and supply to all consumers, while enabling SERCs to make Distribution licensees free from USO, in consultation with State Governments, for large consumers eligible for Open Access (more than 1 MW).

The Bill not only promotes cost-reflective tariffs while protecting subsidised consumers (farmers, poor households) through transparent budgeted subsidies under Section 65, but also seeks to eliminate crosssubsidy for the Manufacturing Industry, Railways, and Metro railways within five years.

stretching for miles, the slow sway of a camel ride, the vibrant culture of local Kutch villages, and the unforgettable taste of authentic Kutch cuisine -- Rann Utsav has something magical for every visitor. It’s no wonder tourists can’t stop praising this land of wonder.

“Kutch is breathtaking. The beauty here is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” says Preeti Kirecha, a tourist from Gujarat.

But this is the same Kutch that was completely devastated in the

2001 earthquake -- a tragedy that left deep scars. Rising from the ruins, the region was rebuilt with remarkable vision. Under the leadership of the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Kutch found a new identity. In 2005, the Rann Utsav was introduced, transforming the region into a global cultural destination. Today, Kutch proudly shines on the tourism map of not just India, but the world.

The recently built Smriti Van Earthquake Museum, completed three years ago, stands as a powerful reminder of the journey from destruction to development.

tabahi’: India awaits Ro-Ko’s explosive return to ODI action

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) As India prepare to face South Africa in the first ODI of the

iconic duo, fondly referred to by fans as “Do Bhai, Dono Tabahi”, are set to return to international action, igniting excitement across the nation.

Rohit and Virat, who remain towering figures in the cricketing world, were last seen in action during India’s tour of Australia. However, their performances did not quite match expectations on that occasion. Now, with conditions favourable and with both having a point to prove, fans are eager to see their bats do the talking once again.

This ODI series carries added significance following India’s recent Test series defeat against South Africa. A strong performance in the 50-over

format could go a long way in lifting the spirits of supporters and restoring momentum for the Men in Blue.

Notably, both Rohit and Kohli have stepped away from Test and T20I cricket, announcing their retirement from the two formats earlier this year. However, the veteran pair expressed their desire to continue representing India in ODIs, and the selectors have backed them fully by including them in the squad for this crucial series.

With the spotlight back on Ranchi, expectations are skyhigh. The fans await nothing less than fireworks from two modernday legends who have defined an era of Indian cricket — and now stand ready to script another chapter in blue.

Indian researchers decode early lives of young stars using NASA satellite data

New Delhi, Nov 26 (IANS) A team of researchers from the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), has decoded the early lives of young stars called Young Stellar Objects (YSO) using a decade of data from NASA satellites Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and its extended mission NEOWISE, the Ministry of Science & Technology said on Wednesday.

ARIES is an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), The study, published in The

Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, revealed that stellar infancy is far more turbulent and variable than previously thought. YSO are stars in the earliest stages of their lives where stars stably fuse hydrogen in their cores. This is the stage before the stars enter the main sequence of what is called the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram -- a plot showing stars in various stages of evolution based on their temperature and brightness. In the study, Neha Sharma and Saurabh Sharma from the ARIES analysed light curves for over 22,000 YSOs across various massive star-forming regions in our galaxy. Addressing the third session of the G20 Summit on "A Fair and a Just Future for All - Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence,” the Prime Minister emphasised that while AI should expand human capabilities, the ultimate decision should be made by humans themselves.

He noted that such technology applications must be ‘humancentric' rather than 'financecentric', 'global' rather than 'national', and based on 'open source' rather than 'exclusive models'.

PM Modi elaborated that this vision has been integrated into India's technology ecosystem, which has resulted in significant benefits in space applications, AI and digital payments, where the country is a world leader.

The Prime Minister outlined India's approach to AI based on equitable access, population-

level skilling, and responsible deployment. He noted that under the India-AI Mission, accessible high-performance computing capacity is being built to ensure that AI benefits reach everyone in the country.

Recalling progress made on talent mobility at the New Delhi G20 Summit, he proposed that the group should develop a global framework for talent mobility in the coming years.

The Prime Minister concluded by articulating India's message and commitment to global well-being. India stands for development that is sustainable, trade that is trusted, fair finance, and progress in which everyone prospers, he added.

316 mn women, 12.5 mn adolescent girls faced sexual violence in last 12 months: WHO

Geneva, Nov 20 (IANS) A whopping 316 million women and 12.5 million adolescent girls worldwide faced sexual violence in the last 12 months, according to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday.

The report, released ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and girls observed on November 25, noted that violence against women remains one of the world’s most persistent and under-addressed human rights crises and has made little progress in the last two decades.

Nearly one in three women -estimated 840 million globally -- have experienced partner or sexual violence during their lifetime -- a number that has hardly changed since the year 2000.

In the last 12 months, 316 million

women -- 11 per cent of those aged 15 or older -- were subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner.

About 12.5 million adolescent girls -- 15-19 years of age or 16 per cent -- have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner.

Progress on reducing intimate partner violence has been painfully slow, with only a 0.2 per cent annual decline over the past two decades, stated the report. For the first time, the report also includes national and regional estimates of sexual violence by someone other than a partner. It found 263 million women have experienced non-partner sexual violence since age 15, a figure experts caution is significantly under-reported due to stigma and fear.

"Violence against women is one of humanity’s oldest and most pervasive injustices, yet still one of the least acted upon," said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

"No society can call itself fair, safe, or healthy while half its population lives in fear. Ending this violence is not only a matter of policy; it is a matter of dignity, equality, and human rights," he added.

New Delhi, Nov 26 (IANS) The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, on Wednesday announced the launch of the second edition of its flagship industry-research interface initiative, SIDDHI 2.0 (Scientific Innovation in Drug Development, Healthcare and Integration).

Launched at a two-day national conclave in Vijayawada, SIDDHI 2.0 marks a strategic shift towards research-led product development, indigenous technology advancement, and accelerated translational pathways, and industry

partnerships -- key elements of India’s evolving Ayush innovation agenda.

“As lifestyle-related diseases are on the rise, Ayurveda’s wellnesscentric approach is increasingly relevant,” said Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, CCRAS.

Acharya appreciated CII’s support in enabling direct engagement between CCRAS and the pharmaceutical sector through platforms such as SIDDHI.

K. Dinesh Kumar, IAS, Director (Ayush), Government of Andhra Pradesh, emphasised that SIDDHI 2.0 brings all key stakeholders onto a single platform and added that while modern science has increased lifespan, Ayurveda can ensure a healthier lifespan.

Dr N. Srikanth, Deputy Director General, CCRAS, informed that the Council has validated over 150 Ayurvedic formulations, including

herbo-mineral preparations. He encouraged the industry to utilise CCRAS’s extensive data, spanning quality, safety, and toxicity studies, and highlighted the organisation’s industry-friendly research policy, which includes IPR-sharing provisions. He also mentioned CCRAS’s support for Ayurveda-based, AIdriven, technology-enabled, and other innovative start-ups. at Army Hospital (Research and Referral), who has the distinction of performing surgery on two Indian Presidents," the MoD said in its press note. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually addressed the closing ceremony and appreciated the efforts of the Northern Command and Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) for providing emergency medical care as and when required to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi also virtually addressed the gathering, congratulating the AFMS and Northern Command for this unique endeavour. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha attended the closing ceremony. General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, was present on the occasion. Union Minister Jitendra Singh also visited the camp on November 20 to interact with the patients. The camp delivered life-altering results, restoring the sight of 96-year-old Rajkumari Devi and 72-year-old Surinder Singh from Poonch. After recovering his sight, Surinder Singh -- who had witnessed tragic losses during Operation Sindoor shelling -transformed his gratitude into action, personally mobilising fellow citizens struggling with hardship to avail the facilities.

New Delhi, November 22 (IANS) World-class infrastructure, unique surgical expertise, and robust regulation have driven the number of liver donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in India, said experts here on Saturday. The experts were speaking at the Annual Conference of The Liver Transplantation Society of India (LTSICON 2025) -- held from November 20 to 23, in the national capital.

According to data from the Global Observatory on Organ Donation and Transplantation (GODT) and the National Organ and

Technology

Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), India performed around 5,000 liver transplants in 2024. The country has more than 200 active liver transplant centres across the country.

“India’s liver transplant ecosystem represents the perfect harmony between science, ethics, and humanity. Every success story here is the result of rigorous protocols, a transparent donor evaluation system, and the commitment of multidisciplinary teams who treat every case like family. What makes India truly special is not just the number of transplants we perform, but the values that guide our process -compassion, accountability, and excellence,” said Dr. Abhideep Chaudhary, President-Elect of the Liver Transplantation Society of India (LTSI).

The experts noted that India performs the highest number of living donor liver transplants annually, setting new global benchmarks in terms of success and safety. Every LDLT conducted in India now follows a stringent, transparent, and legally monitored process, ensuring the safety of both donor and recipient.

The entire system is governed by state and national regulatory bodies. Donors are generally close family members, and each case is scrutinised at multiple levels of medical, psychological, and ethical evaluation before approval. This strict adherence to protocol has helped India achieve one of the highest success rates in the world, often comparable to and sometimes better than many developed nations.

essential to achieve universal health coverage in India: NHA official

New Delhi, Nov 22 (IANS) Vikram Pagaria, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) Director, National Health Authority (NHA), said on Saturday that technology is essential to achieving universal health coverage in India. He was speaking at the Regional Open Digital Health Summit 2025 in the national capital.

The three-day event brought together leaders from government departments and experts from international organisations and the health technology sector to put in motion a framework for Digital Health and artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration across the South-East Asia region.

Pagaria focused on the importance of digital health as an investment.

"Digital health is an investment, not a cost, and is essential in achieving universal health coverage," he said. He underscored technology's potential to overcome critical challenges -- such as doctor shortages -- and reach underserved rural communities, the NHA official said.

"Technology alone does not equal transformation. True impact comes from addressing

real-world needs, empowering frontline workers, protecting rights, and ensuring equity," said Meredith Dyson, Regional Health Specialist, Health Systems Strengthening, UNICEF. She underlined the importance of interoperability by design and country-specific blueprints aligned with Digital Public Infrastructure principles. Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and CEO, IndiaAI Mission, called for building a safe, inclusive, and globally relevant AI-enabled health system through collaboration between government, states, hospitals, technologists, academia, World Health Organisation, and the Global South.

Summer nail care secrets

Hydration is Key

Combat the drying effects of summer heat by regularly applying moisturising lotion or oil to your nails and cuticles. This simple step will help maintain their strength and flexibility, reducing the risk of breakage.

Summeris all about fun in the sun, beach outings, and showing off those fabulous nails! With the sunny season upon us, it's essential to step up our nail care game to keep our nails looking fresh and vibrant.

Experts in nail care from Tip and Toe Salon share with IANSlife

Protect from the Sun

Protect your nails from the sun's harmful UV rays, just as you would protect your skin. Consider using a nail polish with UV protection or applying a clear topcoat containing SPF. When engaging in outdoor activities, wearing gloves can also provide an additional layer of protection against sun damage.

Chase the sun, not the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.

Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.

"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.

Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends to combat the heat by staying

the importance of maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, especially during the summer months. Don't let the sun and heat take a toll on your nail health; follow these expertrecommended tips to keep your nails looking fabulous.

Use the Right Tools

Using the right tools is crucial for maintaining nail health. Avoid metal cuticle pushers, as they can cause damage and increase infection risks. Instead, opt for wooden or rubber cuticle pushers. Additionally, always use sharp, clean nail clippers and files to prevent nail splitting and peeling.

hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."

While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."

The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

Zeenat Aman says, today’s cinema embraces nuances people once overlooked

Veteran Bollywood star Zeenat Aman, whose groundbreaking performances in classics such as “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”, “Qurbani” and “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” to name a few, blended glamour with a quiet defiance, says the conversation around “superficiality” has changed with time. Asked back then, glamour

was often misunderstood as superficial. Yet her characters from Hare Rama, Hare Krishna to Satyam Shivam Sundaram carried emotional rebellion within the glamour. Does she feel that nuances are returning to cinema now?

“Yeah. You know, I think we have not just Hindi cinema, we have regional cinema. And I think there

are so many different stories that are being told on so many different platforms,”Zeenat told IANS.

Zeenat Aman added that streaming has opened doors for voices that earlier remained on the fringes.

“And especially now with OTT and the streaming platform. So I think there are all kinds of stories and all kinds of wonderful opportunities for young actors and all actors to perform,” added Zeenat.

Talking about Haré Rama Haré Krishna, which was released in 1971 and directed by Dev Anand. The film deals with the decadence of the Hippie culture, and aims to have an anti-drug message and also depicts some problems associated with Westernization. The film was influenced by the 1968 American psychedelic film Psych-Out.

Zeenat Aman’s Qurbani released in 1980 and it stars Vinod Khanna, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri and Kader Khan. It is said to be inspired by the 1972 Italian-West German movie The Master Touch.

Meanwhile, Satyam Shivam Sundaram was a 1978 romantic drama starring Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman.It talks about the differences between physical and spiritual love. Her latest work includes narrating a compelling 10-part documentary series christened “Embers of Hope: The Fight for Our Future” for the Discovery channel.

The actress, who shot to fame as the iconic Komolika in “Kasautii Zindagii Kay”, is seen in a striking blue saree that blends seamlessly with the sea behind her.

“To be a woman is to play a thousand roles & still know exactly who you are,” Urvashi wrote as the caption. Urvashi made her acting debut at 6 for a TV commercial with Revathi. As a child she appeared as Rajlaxmi in the Doordarshan

the 2000s, she was seen in Ghar Ek Mandir, Kabhii Sautan Kabhii Sahelii, Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kahiin To Hoga. Priyanka Chopra: Ambition, achievement can happen along with a balanced life

Global star Priyanka Chopra feels that stories like “Born Hungry” serve as a reminder that ambition and compassion don’t have to be at odds with each other in a world obsessed with speed and success.

Asked whether stories like “Born Hungry” remind audiences of the human cause behind ambition and achievement?

Priyanka told IANS: “I don't think they're mutually exclusive. Ambition and achievement can happen along with a balanced life and without human sacrifice.

There is a balance to be found, and that’s what we all need to strive for.”

Explaining further, Priyanka spoke about why purpose matters, but not at the cost of one’s wellbeing.

“I think it's really, really important to have a sense of ambition, a sense of achievement, a sense of purpose for every human being — whatever that version might be for you in your life. But at the same time, not at the cost of others, not at the cost of your well-being, not at the cost

of your mental health or your health.” For her, Born Hungry, which will stream on JioHotstar, underlines the grit people carry within themselves, while also acknowledging the role of fate. “ “I think what a movie like Born Hungry reminds us is that each human being has tenacity within ourselves, and if we want to achieve something, we can — but also that there has to be some element of divinity involved, like it was with Sash’s life,” said the actress, who has produced “Born Hungry”.

Hollywood star Antonio Banderas relished the experience on sets of “Anthony Bourdain” biopic even though it smelled “fishy.”

Recalling the time, Banderas said: “We spent a month and a half filming in Cape Cod and Newport, constantly surrounded by the smell of fish. Every time I came back to the hotel, I had to shower because I absolutely reeked — I was cleaning fish every single day!”

Speaking at the Torino Film Festival, Banderas shed new light on the Matt Johnson-directed, “Tony,” which reimagines the chef-turned-globetrotter as an aimless young man, reports

“After finishing university, (Bourdain) originally wanted to become a writer,” Banderas said. “But almost immediately, he began struggling with depression and drug addiction, so the film explores the very difficult early years of his life.”

Banderas plays a Brazilian-born restaurateur who takes the young Tony, played by “The Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa, under his wing.

“Through this relationship, Tony begins to truly learn how to cook,” he said. “So the film is not just about cuisine or culinary techniques; it’s about his life, his identity, and his way of being — shaped by this unique mentor.”
