laddus distributed as 'prasad' at the Sri Venkateswara Temple during the previous YSR Congress administration, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy.

One of the pleas filed by advocate Satyam Singh said, "A grave violation of religious customs occurred as investigations revealed disturbing facts that non-vegetarian products, specifically bird meat (kolis), the presence of animal fat, 'lard' (pig fat), fish oil and other impurities were used in the preparation of 'prasadam'."

"This act not only violates the fundamental tenets of Hindu religious customs but also deeply wounds the sentiments of countless devotees who regard the 'prasadam' as a sacred blessing. The gravity of this situation cannot be overlooked, as it strikes at the core of our religious practices and beliefs," it added.

Further, it said that the recent violation at the Tirumala Tirupati Balaji Temple represents a grave infringement of Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of religion. The petition said that the holy

Another plea seeks the appointment of a committee under direct monitoring of the Supreme Court or appointment of a retired SC judge with other experts to conduct an independent enquiry into the allegations of substandard ingredients and animal fat in the ghee in Tirupati Tirumala Temple.

transnational crime has had the audacity to attack the world's largest democracy.," she said in her address.

She emphasised that Pakistan has long used cross-border terrorism as a weapon against India.

"It has attacked our Parliament, our financial capital, Mumbai, marketplaces and pilgrimage routes. The list is long. For such a country to speak about violence anywhere is hypocrisy," she added.

India also underscored Pakistan's continued attempts to disrupt the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir, which is regarded

as an integral part of the country and rejected any possibility of dialogue with Pakistan until terrorism emanating from its territory ends.

In her statement, Mangalanandan highlighted Pakistan's history of human rights violations and its support for terrorism, noting that it is a country that hosted Osama bin Laden and continues to be involved in global terror incidents.

"It is ridiculous that a nation that committed genocide in 196071, and which persecutes its minorities relentlessly even now, dare speak about intolerances and phobias. The world can see for itself what Pakistan really is," she

remarked, further condemning Pakistan for hosting terrorists like Osama bin Laden.

India also noted that the world can see through Pakistan's attempts to spread falsehoods, and New Delhi's stand on the matter remains clear.

India's comments come after Sharif's General Assembly speech on Friday, where he claimed that India's military doctrines envisaged a surprise attack and a "limited war" under the nuclear overhang to capture territories in Kashmir. He warned of a "decisive response" from Pakistan despite the threat being fabricated. Sharif's speech took on an

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) informed earlier that 20 more terrorists were killed alongside Nasrallah in the attack on Hezbollah's central headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon.

"In a precise attack by the Israeli Air Force and under the direction of the intelligence wing, fighter jets attacked and killed the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist

More than 20 other terrorists of varying ranks, who were present at the underground headquarters in Beirut located beneath civilian buildings, and were managing Hezbollah's terrorist operations against the State of Israel, were also eliminated.

‘Russia Won’t Prevail’, says Biden as he hosts Zelensky in White House

support for his war effort at the same time as Biden tries to lock in aid for Ukraine, ahead of the white-knuckle vote pitting Biden's Vice-President Kamala Harris against firebrand Trump.

The Democrat pledged nearly $8 billion in military aid in his announcement on Thursday, including $5.5 billion to be authorised before it expires at the end of the US fiscal year on Monday.

Biden said in a statement that the "surge in security assistance for Ukraine" would "help Ukraine win this war".

Biden also announced Washington would provide Ukraine with the Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) long-range munition and called a summit of allies in Germany in October.

The White House however played down Ukraine's hopes that Zelensky's visit would achieve his long-held goal of getting permission to fire long-range Western-made missiles into Russian territory.

"I'm not expecting there to be any new announcements on this particular action or a decision coming out of this meeting," Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

Harris was due to meet Zelensky separately at the White House on Thursday.

Zelensky also visited the US Congress -- where his government said he had also presented his victory plan -- and gave a defiant address at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

But Zelensky's visit has prompted fresh nuclear saber rattling from Moscow, which has repeatedly warned the West against giving Ukraine long-range arms.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday announced plans to broaden Moscow's rules on the use of its atomic weaponry in the event of a "massive" air attack.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the nuclear threat "totally irresponsible" while EU foreign policy spokesman Peter Stano said Putin was making a "gamble with his nuclear arsenal". Kyiv faces an increasingly difficult battlefield situation two and a half years into Russia's invasion, with Russian forces continuing to push into eastern Ukraine.

But the US presidential election means Washington's support now hangs on the balance -- and with Zelensky apparently at odds with Trump and the Republicans.

Trump had also been due to meet Zelensky during his US visit, but their talks now appear to be on ice.

Trump accused Zelensky on the eve of the visit of refusing to strike a deal with Moscow and once again questioned why the United States was giving billions of dollars to Kyiv.

At an election rally on Wednesday, the Republican called the Ukrainian President "probably the greatest salesman on Earth". Republicans were livid after Zelensky visited an arms factory in Biden's hometown in the battleground state of Pennsylvania earlier this week, with House Speaker Mike Johnson calling for the Ukrainian ambassador to be sacked.

Zelensky also sparked fury in Republican ranks when he told The New Yorker magazine this week that Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance did not understand the war's complexity.

Adani Portfolio companies to supply 6,600 MW hybrid solar and thermal power to Maharashtra

Ahmedabad, Sep 15 (IANS) Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) and Adani Power Ltd (APL) have won the bid to supply 6,600 MW of hybrid solar and thermal power to Maharashtra, it was announced on Sunday.

Adani Green will sign a longterm power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) for the supply of 5,000 MW (5GW) solar power to the state.

The solar power supply will come from the world’s largest renewable energy park being developed at Khavda in Kutch, Gujarat, as per the Letter of Intent (LOI) awarded to Adani Power. Also, Adani Power will sign a long-term power supply agreement (PSA) with MSEDCL for the supply of 1,496 MW (net) thermal power to Maharashtra from a new 1,600 MW ultrasupercritical thermal power project.

The total of 6,600 MW capacity has been secured through a competitive bidding process, initiated by the MSEDCL for procurement of combined 1,600

MW thermal and 5,000 MW solar power.

"We are glad to collaborate with the MSEDCL to meet the states’ rising energy demand through renewable sources and fulfil its RE commitments. Our goal is to accelerate India’s clean energy transition. This is a crucial step towards the country’s energy independence and building a sustainable future," said Sagar Adani, Executive Director, Adani Green Energy.

He further said that Adani Green is well positioned to achieve the 50 GW target with secured resource-rich sites in strategic locations, a portfolio mix of renewables and storage solutions, a robust supply chain, and clear evacuation plans.

The solar capacity award of 5 GW is the world’s largest such award since 2020, bolstering AGEL’s leadership in India and as one of the largest renewable energy (RE) portfolios globally.

Similarly, the thermal capacity award is the largest in the country in recent years to the private sector.

The solar capacity has been allocated at a flat tariff of Rs 2.70 per kWh for the supply of power for a period of 25 years.

The solar projects would be developed in a staggered manner over a period of three years

from execution of the PPAs with MSEDCL, said the company. The thermal capacity has been awarded on the design, build, finance, own, and operate (DBFOO) basis with the sourcing of fuel from coal linkages allocated under the ‘SHAKTI Policy’.

Under the terms, APL will enter into a 25-year PSA with MSEDCL for the supply of 1,496 MW of electricity on a long-term basis from a new thermal power plant having an installed capacity of 1,600 MW.

Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Adani Power, said that as India advances in achieving its economic growth targets while maintaining a keen focus on sustainability, the role of conventional power in helping stabilise the grid and supplying base load power assumes greater importance.

"Adani Power is proud to partner a leading industrialised state like Maharashtra by becoming one of its key suppliers of reliable and competitive power from its existing and upcoming capacities, while enabling it to integrate an ever-increasing quantum of renewable energy in its grid," said Sardana.

Adani Power operates an installed thermal power capacity of 17,010 MW spread across 10 power plants.

Sources said that the death note was written in his diary. “I have killed my lover Mahalaxmi on Sept 3,” the accused had written in his diary.

He had also written that he had committed the crime on September 3, when he went to her house. “I was fed up with her conduct. I fought with her over personal matters and Mahalaxmi assaulted me. Enraged by her act,

I killed her,” he had stated.

“After killing her, I had chopped her body into 59 pieces and kept them in the fridge. I have done this act after being fed up with her conduct,” he had stated in the diary.

The police were gathering information about killer Mukthiranjan Roy at his residence when the note was found. Roy committed suicide by hanging on Wednesday. He was found hanging from a tree in a village in Bhadrak district in Odisha.

“The suspected killer had arrived at the Pandi village on Wednesday and stayed at home. He had left his home on a two-wheeler. His body was found by the locals,” police sources said.

Mukthiranjan had disappeared following the incident of a sensational murder. The Karnataka Police had sent four teams to Odisha to hunt him.

The suspected killer had stopped coming to work from September 1. Mahalaxmi’s last day of work was also on September 1. Earlier, the police suspected that Mahalaxmi was killed on September 2 or September 3. The police stated that the suspected killer was the team head where

Kejriwal has been ‘exposed’, people understand his drama, says Delhi Congress Chief

New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS)

Slamming AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal for "betraying" people of the national capital and then holding 'Janata ki Adalat', Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee

President Devender Yadav on Sunday said now people will not get swayed away by the former chief minister's "drama" as he has been "exposed".

While speaking to IANS, Yadav stated, "I would like to tell Kejriwal that the people of Delhi now know you very well. Mr Kejriwal, you betrayed the people of Delhi... You have been exposed." Yadav further said, "I want to say

that people chose you as Chief Minister three times. You made promises, but did not keep them, constantly taking U-turns."

"Before coming to power, Kejriwal used to say that he had evidence against then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her ministers, but had to tender a written apology to the Congress leader in the court," Yadav said.

Yadav claimed, "Kejriwal and his ministers have served jail sentences in connection with corruption cases. I think people will not be moved by his drama now..."

Mounting the attack on Kejriwal for corruption in connection with the excise police case, Yadav said: "As far as public consent is concerned, it was the court that stopped you from going to the office and signing any official files. You were forced to resign due to certain conditions set by the Supreme Court, not by the public. Somewhere, the Supreme Court has acknowledged that you are involved in these corruption

charges, and that's why these restrictions were imposed," he added.

Meanwhile, AAP organised the 'Janata Ki Adalat' programme in Jantar Mantar and hit out at the BJP, saying that his party leaders were "targetted".

Arvind Kejriwal said, "It was on April 4, 2011, that the anticorruption Anna movement began. We ran the government honestly, providing many services to the public. We provided free electricity (200 units), and free water, made bus rides free for women, and arranged free pilgrimage trips for the elderly. We built hospitals, mohalla clinics, and excellent schools."

"For 10 years, we worked with honesty. This made Prime Minister Narendra Modi feel that to defeat us, he must attack our integrity. That's why he made allegations of corruption against us. Our ministers and leaders were selectively put in jail," he added.

Jagan writes to PM Modi to reprimand Chandrababu over Tirupati laddu allegation

Amaravati, Sep 22 (IANS) Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister

Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to severely reprimand Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for hurting the beliefs of crores of people for political objectives by spreading a lie that "the ghee used for making Tirupati laddu contained animal fat".

Calling Naidu a "pathological and a habitual liar", Jagan Mohan Reddy said he had stopped so low as to seriously hurt the beliefs of crores of people purely for political objectives.

Stating that Naidu was making attempts to irreparably tarnish the sanctity, integrity, and reputation of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, he cautioned that these lies could precipitate a widespread agony, having far-reaching consequences on various fronts.

"His actions have indeed lowered not only the statue of a Chief Minister but also that of everyone in public life and also the sanctity of the worldrenowned TTD and its practices.

Sir, the entire country looks to you at this critical juncture. It is very imperative that Naidu be reprimanded in a severe way for his shameless act of spreading lies and the truth be brought to light," the YSR Congress Party chief wrote in the letter dated September 22.

The former chief minister stated this would help allay the suspicions that Naidu created

in the minds of crores of Hindu devotees and restore faith in the sanctity of the TTD.

Jagan alleged that Naidu made the false allegation to divert people’s attention from the failure of his government on all fronts.

Naidu spread blatant lies against the practices of the TTD by alleging that the ghee that was being used in the preparation of the prasadams in the Tirumala temple was adulterated and that the ghee contained animal fats. This is indeed a lie spread with political motives and this false propaganda has the potential to hurt the sentiments of Hindu devotees across the globe, the YSRCP chief said.

Jagan mentioned that the tanker containing the possibly adulterated ghee arrived at Tirupati on July 12, 2024, and the same was rejected and the ghee was not used in the preparation of the prasadams.

RG Kar case: CBI tracks major lapses in inquest report

Kolkata, Sep 27 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has found severe lapses in the inquest report in the R.G. Kar rape-murder case, said sources here on Friday.

Sources said the first lapse was detected when the magistrate's report mentioned that he got only 20 minutes to examine the body of the victim, an unusually short period considering the seriousness of the matter.

In legal terms an inquest report is a document that records the findings of a police officer or magistrate in an investigation into a death that was sudden, unexplained or violent and is prepared to determine the cause of death and whether it was unnatural or suspicious.

Sources added that from the short period that the judicial magistrate was given to examine the body of the victim, the investigating officials believe that unnecessary haste was adopted in case of preparation of the inquest report just as it was done in case of

completing the autopsy process which was completed in just 70 minutes.

The second lapse as identified by the investigating officials was the absence of detailed mentions and descriptions of the wounds on the body of the victim in the inquest report, sources added.

The third lapse as identified by sources, was the absence of vivid descriptions of the different exhibits witnessed near the victim’s body at the time of examination for preparing the inquest report.

At the same time, the investigating officials have also identified major contradictions in certain contents mentioned in the post-mortem report and the seizure list given by city police who handled the initial investigation before the central agency took charge of the investigation following a Supreme Court order.

The contradictions, sources added, were also about the mention of the garments of the victims.

The woman doctor was found dead in mysterious circumstances in the seminar hall of the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Three people have been arrested in the case so far.

Congress, Pakistan have same intentions on J&K: HM Shah

New Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said that Pakistan and the Congress have the same intention and agenda with regard to Jammu and Kashmir.

The recent remarks by Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif extending support to the Congress and National Conference’s call for abrogation of Article 370 have once again exposed this, he said.

In addition to discussions with PM Modi, the Jamaican Prime Minister is also slated to meet President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and other high-ranking officials and business leaders.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), while announcing the visit, stated, "This visit is expected to bolster bilateral relations, enhance economic cooperation, and solidify the longstanding bonds between Jamaica and India."

He said, “Pakistan's Defence Minister's statement about Congress and JKNC's support on Article 370 and 35A has once again exposed the Congress party. This statement has made it clear that Congress and Pakistan have the same intentions and agenda. For the last few years, Rahul Gandhi has been standing with every anti-India force that hurts the sentiments of the countrymen.”

HM Shah further said, “Be it asking for proof of air strikes and surgical strikes or saying objectionable things about the Indian Army, the tone and tenor of Rahul Gandhi's Congress Party

and Pakistan has always been the same and Congress has always been hand in glove with the antinational forces.”

He added, “However, both Congress and Pakistan must remember that the Modi Government is in power at the Centre. Neither Article 370 nor terrorism is going to return to Kashmir.”

Earlier, Khawaja Asif had stated that Pakistan's Shehbaz Sharif government and the CongressNational Conference alliance in India were on the same page on the issue of restoring Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir.

Asif suggested that there is a "high chance" of the Congress-National Conference alliance winning the ongoing Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, potentially allowing them to come to power in the Union Territory. His remarks were made during an interview with Geo News amid the Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, the first to be held since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019 and after a decade.

Asif's comments were directed at the alliance's stance on Article 370, which they have made a central issue in these elections. He stated that both Pakistan and the alliance were in favour of restoring the special status of

Suicide remains leading cause of death for young Australians veterans: Report

Canberra, Sep 24 (IANS) Suicide is the leading cause of death for young Australians who leave the military, a government report has found.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) on Tuesday released its seventh annual report on deaths by suicide among permanent, reserve and former members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), reports Xinhua news agency.

According to the report, 1,763 people who served at least one day in the ADF since 1985 died by

suicide between 1997 and 2022. Of those, 1,464 -- 83 per cent -- were ex-serving members of the ADF, 174 were permanent members and 125 were in the reserves.

Between 1997 and 2022, suicide was the leading cause of death among ex-serving personnel under the age of 30, the report said, accounting for the deaths of 42 per cent of ex-serving males and 44 per cent of ex-serving females in the age group.

The suicide rate for ex-serving males has trended downwards since 2014 but remains 26 per cent higher than for males in the general population.

"Every life lost to suicide is a deep tragedy and the impact on their loved ones is profound and farreaching, including on Australia's defence and veteran community,"

AIHW spokesperson Paul Pham said in a statement.

Across three years from the start of 2020 through the end of 2022, the suicide rate -- measured as deaths per 100,000 population per year -- was 27.6 for ex-serving males, 18.5 for permanent males, 13.4 for reserve males and 12.6 for ex-serving females, respectively. The report was published weeks after the landmark Royal Commission into Defense and Veteran Suicide handed down its final report on September 9 following a three-year inquiry.

It found that over the last 10 years, an average of 78 current or former ADF members have died by suicide every year and made 122 recommendations for change, including a proposal for a new agency to help ADF personnel transition into civilian life.

Australians advised to leave Lebanon immediately after deadly device explosions

Canberra, Sep 19 (IANS) The Australian government has reiterated its warning to citizens not to travel to Lebanon following the explosion of communications devices used by Hezbollah.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong on Thursday said that the government is gravely concerned about the consequences of a possible escalation of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

"It's another reminder I think to Australians, do not travel to Lebanon," Chalmers told reporters.

His warning comes after at least 26 people were killed and thousands more injured when pagers and handheld radios used by Hezbollah exploded in Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Xinhua news agency.

Speaking on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio, Wong called for all Australians in Lebanon to leave the country while they still can.

"The consequences of regional escalation are obviously

substantial," she said.

The government's Smartraveller service updated its travel advice for Lebanon on Wednesday, encouraging Australians in the country to leave immediately while commercial flights remain available.

It warned that the security situation in the country could deteriorate with little or no notice and that Beirut airport could close.

"The Australian Government may not be able to assist you to leave in such circumstances," it said. Australia has had a "do not travel" advisory in place for Lebanon since October 2023.

Australia to ban imports of fake stone linked to deadly lung disease

Canberra, Sep 18 (IANS) The Australian government has announced that imports of fake stone products linked to the lung disease silicosis will be banned from 2025.

Murray Watt, the Minister for

Employment and Workplace Relations, and Home Affairs

Minister Tony Burke on Wednesday said that engineered stone bench tops, slabs and panels will be stopped at Australia's border from January 1, 2025, according to Xinhua news agency.

A report published by the government agency Safe Work Australia in 2023 found that the risk of silicosis linked to the

cutting process of engineered stone poses an unacceptable risk to stonemasons. Silicosis is a long-term potentially lethal lung disease caused by inhaling large amounts of crystalline silica dust.

The report from Safe Work Australia prompted the government to introduce a world-first domestic ban on the use, supply and manufacture of engineered stone products, which took effect in July.

Australian researchers discover new cells in world-first

Canberra, Sep 23 (IANS)

Australian researchers have discovered new cells in a worldfirst that they say could enhance future human tissue repair and generation.

In a study published on Monday, a team from the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute discovered the cells that can transform into two previously-known types of cells: endothelial cells that form blood vessels and macrophages, which are responsible for tissue repair and defense.

Named EndoMac progenitors, the new cells were discovered in the outer layer of aortas in adult mice.

The team said that the existence of cells with similar functions has been theorized for over a century

but that they had never been found. The discovery was the result of nine years of work by the researchers.

They found that the cells are activated by injury or poor blood flow, at which point they rapidly expand to aid healing, Xinhua news agency reported.

Ongoing research suggests that the EndoMac progenitors could be used to boost healing in conditions like diabetes where the body struggles to properly repair itself.

"When we transplanted these progenitors into diabetic wounds, we saw a dramatic improvement in healing within days," Sanuri Liyange, a member of the research team, said in a media release.

"In theory, this could become a game-changer for patients suffering from chronic wounds." She said that the discovery was a promising development for creating more effective treatments that support the body's ability to heal and maintain function over time.

Australian population passes 27 million

Canberra, Sep 19 (IANS) Australia's population has officially surpassed 27 million people, with migration primarily driving growth.

Official data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday revealed that the Australian population was 27.12 million at the end of March 2024, Xinhua news agency reported.

The population grew by 615,300 people - or 2.3 per cent - in the 12 months to the end of March.

"Net overseas migration drove 83 per cent of this population growth, while births and deaths, known as natural increase, made up the other 17 per cent," Beidar

Cho, head of demography at the ABS, said in a statement.

Net overseas migration, which is calculated by subtracting overseas departures from overseas arrivals, was 509,800 people in the year to March - down from a record high of 559,900 in the 12 months to September 2023. Natural increase added 105,500 people to Australia's population in the year to March, with 289,700 births and 184,200 deaths registered in that period.

The state New South Wales (NSW) remains the most populous of Australia's eight states and territories, with 8.46 million people - 31.1 per cent of the national population - at the end of March.

The east coast states of NSW, Victoria and Queensland account for 77.3 per cent of the Australian population.

Western Australia recorded the fastest-growing population, up 3.1 per cent in the 12 months to March, while the island state of Tasmania had the lowest growth at 0.4 per cent.

Thousands of Australian workers join protests against govt takeover of construction union

Sydney, Sep 18 (IANS) Thousands of Australian workers on Wednesday walked off job sites to join protests against the federal government's crackdown on a major construction trade union.

Members and supporters of the Construction, Forestry, and Maritime Employees Union

(CFMEU) joined rallies in Sydney and Melbourne to protest against the government's decision to force the construction arm of the union into administration.

The government in August placed all branches of the construction arm of the CFMEU into administration in response to allegations of corruption and criminal infiltration.

Workers on Wednesday walked off job sites for the second time to support the CFMEU after similar protests in August.

Speaking to protesters in Melbourne, CFMEU National Secretary Zach Smith said that the

government's move would lead to worse wages and conditions for Australian workers, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

"An attack on one union is an attack on all," he said.

"Our victory is assured if we stand together and fight together

and today we will be sending a very clear message across those corporate board rooms, across the halls of parliament that we're drawing a line in the sand," Xinhua news agency reported quoting local media.

Saved people from hunger and sorrow, says outgoing Lankan President Wickremesinghe

Colombo, Sep 22 (IANS) In a special address following his election loss, outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Sunday expressed his deep gratitude to the people of Sri Lanka for the mandate granted during the 21st presidential election and acknowledged that, in accordance with the will of the people, the leadership of the country should now be passed on to winner Anura Dissanayake of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party.

The result was decided Sunday evening after Sri Lanka's firstever presidential run-off with the counting of second preference votes as both Dissanayake and Samagi Jana Sandhanaya party's Sajith Premadasa failed to get the required percentage of votes.

The Lankan Election Commission announced that Dissanayake won the presidency with 42.31 per cent of the vote share with Premadasa finishing second and incumbent President Wickremesinghe, who was eliminated after the first round, ending in third position.

"President Anura Dissanayake, With deepest affection, I entrust to you the beloved child of Sri Lanka," Wickremesinghe said

as he began his address to the people of the island nation.

The Lankan President extended his sincere thanks to all those who supported him during his tenure and reflected on his role as a caretaker, stating that he had guided "the beloved child of Sri Lanka" across significant challenges, symbolized by the "Vine Bridge".

"Two years ago, I took over a bankrupt country and a collapsed economy at an extremely turbulent time. I accepted the challenge at a time when no one else had the courage to face it.

I successfully completed the responsibility that history put upon my shoulders. I was able to rescue my motherland from bankruptcy within a short period of two years. I believe this to be the most important thing I could do for my country during my political career," remarked Wickremesinghe.

"Inflation was 70 per cent when I took over the country, but I could reduce it to 0.5 per cent during my time as the President. I increased the Foreign Reserve, which was at USD 20 Million when I came to power, to USD 5.7 Billion. I was able to ensure that the Sri Lankan Rupee which was 380 against the US Dollar, came down to a strong and solid amount of 300. Also, when I took over, the economic growth of the country was negative 7.3 per cent (- 7.3%). But I was able to increase it to a positive 2.3 per cent (2.3%). I am happy and proud about it," he

added.

Having gradually controlled the island nation's worst-ever economic crisis, Wickremesinghe had asked the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to support him in the Presidential Election but eventually fought the elections as an independent candidate.

"I believe that the future generation of the country will give the proper assessment for my historical political role, the way it deserves. I am aware that my place in history as the ruler of this country will be decided not today, but in future. I followed the right path and saved people from hunger and sorrow. I hope that the new President will also follow the right path and put an end to the remaining issues that the people are facing. I was eventually able to carry the dear child called Sri Lanka along a long distance safely – on the dangerous rope bridge," he said on Sunday. He expressed confidence that under new President Dissanayake's leadership, the journey will continue safely and successfully.

"Close to the very end of the rope bridge, people have decided to handover the dear child called Sri Lanka to President Anura Dissanayake. Mr. President, here I handover to you with much love, the dear child called Sri Lanka, whom we both love very dearly. I wish that you will be able to carry this child away from the bridge to the other bank, even safer than the way I carried the child.

Anura Dissanayake takes oath as Sri Lanka’s 9th President

Colombo, Sep 23 (IANS) Anura Dissanayake, leader of the Marxist-leaning Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party, was sworn in on Monday as the ninth President of Sri Lanka, marking a historic moment as the country's first leftist head of state.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, where Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya administered the oath.

The result was decided Sunday evening after Sri Lanka's firstever presidential run-off with the counting of second preference votes following both Dissanayake and Samagi Jana Sandhanaya candidate Sajith Premadasa failing to get the required percentage of votes.

"The dream we have nurtured for centuries is finally coming true. This achievement is not the result of any single person’s work, but the collective effort of hundreds of thousands of you. Your commitment has brought us this far, and for that, I am deeply grateful. between India and Kuwait.

According to MEA, India and Kuwait enjoy traditionally friendly relations, which are rooted in history and have stood the test of time.

India has been a natural trading partner of Kuwait and until 1961, Indian Rupee was a legal tender in Kuwait. Till the discovery and development of oil, Kuwait's economy revolved around its fine harbour and maritime activities which included shipbuilding, pearl diving, fishing and voyages to India on wooden dhows carrying dates, Arabian horses and pearls that were traded for wood, cereals, clothes and spices. The two countries have had diplomatic relations for more than 60 years.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi held a bilateral meeting with his Nepalese counterpart K.P. Sharma Oli. The two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest to strengthen cooperation in all areas of the age-old, multi-faceted and expanding India-Nepal partnership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Dissanayake on securing the win.

"Congratulations Anura Disanayake, on your victory in the Sri Lankan Presidential elections. Sri Lanka holds a special place in India's Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR. I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our multifaceted cooperation for the benefit of our people and the entire region," Prime Minister Modi said in a post on social media platform X late Sunday.

Thanking PM Modi, Dissanayake posted, "Thank you, Prime Minister Modi, for your kind words and support. I share your commitment to strengthening the ties between our nations. Together, we can work towards enhancing cooperation for the benefit of our peoples and the entire region."

Indian High Commissioner was one of the first to meet Dissanayake on Sunday following his victory announcement.

"HC Santosh Jha called on Sri Lankan President-elect Anura Dissanayake. Conveyed greetings from India's leadership and congratulated him on winning the people's mandate. India as Sri Lanka's civilisational twin is committed to further deepen ties for the prosperity of the people of our two countries," the High Commission posted on X. India's decisive political and economic support during Sri Lanka's 2022 economic crisis truly solidified the relationship. In its time of dire need, India extended a lifeline of US$4.5 billion in cash and resources, showcasing an unwavering commitment to its neighbour and elevating the bilateral ties to new levels of trust and cooperation.

Hezbollah fires over 110 rockets into Israel

Jerusalem, Sep 22 (IANS)

Hezbollah forces in Lebanon fired approximately 115 rockets into Israel early on Sunday, with some reaching areas near the northern city of Haifa, extending their range to previously untargeted locations amid the ongoing conflict.

Israeli media reported that Hezbollah targeted a military airport located in the northern Jezreel Valley, triggering sirens across the region and in various areas of the occupied Golan Heights and Upper Galilee.

Buildings were damaged and cars caught fire near Haifa. The Israeli Magen David Adom emergency service said four people were injured by shrapnel, including a 76-year-old man who sustained moderate wounds, while the other three were lightly injured, Xinhua news agency reported quoting local media.

The Israeli military said in a statement that Hezbollah's rockets were fired toward "civilian areas" and that its defensive systems "are deployed in the area and on high alert to thwart threats."

The Israeli military carried out additional airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Sunday morning and vowed that its strikes "will continue and intensify against Hezbollah."

Another narrative war by China?

New Delhi: Propaganda and narratives have consistently formed a fundamental part of the ideological framework within Communist regimes. This was particularly evident in the Soviet Union during Stalin's era, where widespread famine in Ukraine coincided with the exportation of wheat to other nations, all while the regime maintained a facade of normalcy in Ukraine.

Similarly, since the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War and its consolidation of power on the mainland, China has established an intricate propaganda apparatus.

In today's digital age, characterised by limited internet access and social media restrictions within China, the government has sought to sway foreign public opinion. This includes inviting international vloggers and influencers, predominantly from Taiwan, to counter allegations regarding human rights abuses and other criticisms from democratic nations and global organisations. This article will examine the situations in Xinjiang and Tibet, alongside China's strategy of engaging these influencers. Notably, many of these influencers hail from Taiwan—a territory that China claims as its own. The implications of this outreach extend to Taiwan itself and resonate with a wider global audience.

What is Happening in Xinjiang and Tibet

Xinjiang and Tibet represent two of China's most sensitive and contentious regions. Xinjiang is predominantly inhabited by the Uyghur Muslim minority, while Tibet is home to ethnic Tibetans, the majority of whom are practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism.

In both areas, China faces accusations of undermining local cultures, restricting religious freedoms, and suppressing dissent. In Xinjiang, allegations of "re-education" camps, extensive surveillance, and forced labour have led to significant international backlash. Conversely, in Tibet, the ongoing exile of the Dalai Lama and China's stringent control over Buddhist practices remain highly controversial issues.

China has consistently rejected these allegations, framing its actions as essential for maintaining state integrity, combating terrorism, and facilitating economic advancement.

However, the reality presents a stark contrast. Numerous reports from the United Nations document human rights violations perpetrated by China in Xinjiang. The region has effectively become a vast prison for the Uyghur population, where the Chinese government imposes extensive surveillance and restricts religious freedoms.

The situation in Tibet mirrors this repression; since the early 1950s, China has systematically undermined local authority and religious practices. Currently, construction projects in the area have led to the destruction of significant Tibetan religious sites and have inflicted considerable

harm on the environment and local ecosystems.

How China is using influencers in Xinjiang and Tibet

The Communist government in China has faced ongoing scrutiny from democratic nations, human rights organisations, and international bodies regarding alleged human rights violations in the regions of Tibet and Xinjiang. The engagement of foreign and Taiwanese social media influencers, particularly on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, serves as a crucial mechanism for Chinese propaganda.

By inviting Taiwanese influencers to visit Xinjiang and Tibet, China gains a strategic advantage, enabling it to connect with a broader demographic of young, tech-savvy audiences both in Taiwan and internationally. Many of these influencers boast substantial followings and significantly shape public perceptions of the regions they depict.

Consequently, China aims to present Xinjiang and Tibet as safe, thriving areas, directly opposing the claims of human rights abuses that have been levelled against it. The regions these influencers portray to their audiences are meticulously selected: they visit prosperous urban centres, attend culturally vibrant performances, and tour well-maintained religious sites. Through visually appealing photographs, video blogs, and social media posts, they depict an image of harmony, economic progress, and cultural preservation. This narrative stands in stark contrast to the accounts provided by independent journalists, human rights groups, and Uyghur

Three dead in helicopter crash in Spain

Madrid, Sep 30 (IANS) Three people died when the helicopter they were travelling in collided with power lines near a town located in Spain.

The accident happened on Sunday at around 10 a.m. local time close to the town of Pucol in a hilly area, as the three were inspecting electric cables there, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to reports, the reasons not yet known, the helicopter hit a high-voltage line and crashed into a nearby field killing all aboard.

Emergency services in the region said they had "received

and Tibetan exiles, who describe a region where state oppression is pervasive.

On September 5, Taiwan announced that it was aware of reports suggesting that China had been recruiting Taiwanese influencers to visit Xinjiang and create content aimed at promoting a more favourable image of the region.

The Mainland Affairs Council, which oversees cross-strait relations in Taiwan, indicated that it is investigating the recent surge in Xinjiang-related content produced by Taiwanese influencers. The council also cautioned these influencers against violating anti-infiltration laws by accepting financial incentives from Beijing.

In June, Taiwanese YouTuber Potter Wang claimed that the Chinese government was inviting Taiwanese influencers on sponsored trips to China to create content.

In response to his assertions, several Taiwanese YouTubers who recently published videos about Xinjiang denied receiving any payments from Beijing. The Taiwan Affairs Office in China addressed concerns raised by Taiwanese officials, stating that Beijing had invited "Taiwan compatriots" to visit China to experience "the magnificent mountains and rivers, savour a variety of foods, engage with local customs, and share their observations." What is China trying to achieve through this?

Through these sponsored influencer initiatives, China aims to reshape its global image as a violator of human rights. However, for Taiwan, there are underlying motives. Earlier this year, Taiwan conducted democratic elections where Chinese influence was evident in attempts to sway the electorate

news of an accident involving a helicopter which was carrying out inspections on electric lines in Pucol," adding they had sent a helicopter containing members of a special mountain rescue group and three fire engines, along with ambulances to the scene.

Medical services confirmed the death of the three people inside the helicopter at the scene of the crash.

Gaza, Sep 30 (IANS) The health and living conditions in the Gaza Strip are "inhumane," the UN agency for Palestine refugees said. "Sanitary and living conditions across Gaza are inhumane," The

United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said on social media platform X on Sunday. "Mountains of garbage are piling up in Gaza's middle areas as sewage leaks onto the streets," it said. "Families have no choice but to live beside the accumulated waste, exposed to the reek and the threat of

a looming health disaster," it said, calling for an immediate ceasefire. Israel launched a largescale offensive against Hamas in Gaza to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 others taken hostage, Xinhua news agency reported.

towards the Kuomintang (KMT), a party more amenable to Beijing. Instead, the Taiwanese populace opted for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which displeased the Chinese government. One of Xi Jinping's long-standing ambitions is to incorporate the self-governing democratic island of Taiwan into mainland Communist China.

To achieve this, China has employed various strategies, including military threats, blockades, and misinformation campaigns targeting Taiwan. The current effort to engage Taiwanese influencers is intended to attract citizens who can significantly influence public opinion.

Any content shared online can reach a global audience; thus, if Taiwanese influencers produce favourable narratives about China in relation to Tibet and Xinjiang, it may not be perceived as propaganda since it originates from Taiwan.

In January, Taiwan's government effectively countered misinformation campaigns from China during its elections. It can identify and disclose any payments made by China with caution. Other countries can adopt similar measures regarding influencers who have visited Xinjiang and Tibet at China's invitation.

Regarding the potential impact of this strategy, it is unlikely to have a significant effect as most of the world is already aware of China's human rights violations in Xinjiang and Tibet; however, Taiwan must remain vigilant.

Australia announces additional humanitarian aid for Gaza

Canberra, Sep 23 (IANS)

The Australian government has announced additional humanitarian support for Gaza.

Minister for Foreign Affairs

Penny Wong and Minister for International Development and the Pacific Pat Conroy on Monday said that Australia will provide an additional 10 million Australian dollars (US$6.8 million) in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, according to Xinhua news agency. They said in a joint statement that the funding will be directed to UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and will provide lifesaving assistance -including nutrition support and hygiene and dignity kits -- with a

focus on women and girls.

"Australia's support will help address the dire humanitarian situation with the delivery of nutrition and essential hygiene and health products," Wong said. She added that rapid, safe and unimpeded humanitarian relief must reach civilians, and aid workers "must be protected to enable their lifesaving work."

"We continue to press for a ceasefire, the protection of civilians and the release of hostages," Wong further said. It takes the total amount of funding committed by Australia to provide humanitarian assistance in Gaza since the October 7 attack to 82.5 million AUD (US$56.2 million).

Conroy described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic and said civilians should not be made to pay the price for the acts of others.

RBA’s decision to hold rates: A balancing act amid economic uncertainty

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) decision to hold the cash rate steady at 4.35% has come at a critical juncture for the Australian economy. With inflation still lingering above the target range, despite a significant reduction from its 2022 highs, the central bank faces a delicate balancing act. On one side, there are calls for a rate cut to provide relief to households burdened by high living costs and mortgage repayments. On the other, there is the risk that easing rates too soon could stoke inflationary pressures, undoing the hardfought gains in bringing down price increases. This decision by the RBA to pause and assess the situation is reflective of a broader caution that permeates economic policymaking in Australia—and indeed around the globe—today.

The RBA’s cautious approach is understandable given the current economic environment. While inflation has indeed fallen, it remains stubbornly above the central bank’s target of 2-3%. This persistence is partly due to the lasting effects of supply chain disruptions and the war in Ukraine, which have had ripple effects across global markets. Though these factors are gradually easing, their impact continues to be felt in sectors such as energy and food prices, both of which have been significant drivers of inflation. In this context, a premature move to cut rates could send the wrong signal, potentially encouraging a resurgence of inflationary pressures before the economy has fully stabilized. However, the decision to maintain the current rate has not been without its critics. Many households, already grappling with rising costs of living, had hoped for a rate cut to ease the financial strain. For mortgage holders, the steady rise in interest rates over the past year has translated into significantly higher monthly repayments, leaving many struggling to make ends meet. This strain is particularly acute in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne, where housing affordability has long been a concern. In this sense, the RBA’s decision may feel detached from the realities faced by everyday Australians who are being squeezed by both inflation and high interest rates.

At the same time, the RBA’s decision can also be viewed as a prudent step to safeguard the long-term health of the economy. The lessons of the

CECA: A crucial step toward a new economic era

past—most notably the 1970s— show that inflation can be a persistent and damaging force if not tackled decisively. Allowing inflation to remain elevated for too long risks entrenching higher inflation expectations, which can be difficult to unwind. Once businesses and consumers start expecting higher prices, they adjust their behavior accordingly. Workers demand higher wages to keep pace with rising costs, businesses raise prices to cover higher wage bills, and the cycle continues. By keeping rates steady, the RBA is signaling that it remains committed to bringing inflation back within its target range, even if that means some short-term pain for households and businesses. Global factors also weigh heavily on the RBA’s decisionmaking process. While the US Federal Reserve recently cut its interest rate by 50 basis points, it is unlikely that the RBA will follow suit anytime soon. Australia’s economy, while interconnected with the global financial system, faces different challenges than those in the United States. The Fed’s decision to cut rates was largely in response to signs of weakening economic activity in the US, whereas Australia’s economy, though slowing, has not yet shown the same degree of vulnerability. Moreover, the RBA must also contend with the risk of capital outflows if it were to cut rates while other central banks, like the Fed, remain on a tightening path. A rate cut in Australia could lead to a depreciation of the Australian dollar, making imports more expensive and potentially exacerbating inflationary pressures.

The resumption of negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) between Australia and India marks a pivotal moment in the economic relationship between these two nations. After years of delays and intermittent discussions, both countries have taken significant strides to enhance their trade and investment ties. With the goal of achieving $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, the CECA aims to build upon the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which was signed in April 2022 and came into force on December 29 of the same year.

The CECA, once realized, will not only deepen bilateral trade in goods and services but also establish broader cooperation in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, energy, and infrastructure. This ambitious trade pact is symbolic of the growing strategic importance both Australia and India place on each other’s markets. India's large, youthful population and diversified economy offer vast opportunities for Australian businesses, while Australia’s strengths in resources, education, and technology provide significant advantages for India. However, while both nations have expressed optimism, the agreement has not come about without hurdles. The negotiations, first launched in 2011, were suspended in 2016 due to differences over key areas, including labor mobility, intellectual property, and services. When they were relaunched in 2021, it was with a renewed sense of purpose and pragmatism, recognizing the shifting global trade dynamics and the urgency to build stronger alliances, particularly in the IndoPacific region.

The signing of the ECTA in 2022 was a turning point, signaling a breakthrough in what had been an arduous process. The ECTA provided an initial framework for liberalizing trade between the two nations, offering preferential market access for a range of goods and services. For instance, it eliminated tariffs on 85% of Australian goods exported to India, and 96% of Indian goods entering Australia benefited from duty-free access. The ECTA, however, was merely the beginning of a much larger

ambition, and the current CECA negotiations aim to expand this scope by including deeper commitments in investment, technology transfer, and sustainable development. Australia’s decision to prioritize the CECA underscores its desire to diversify its economic partnerships, particularly at a time when global supply chains have been disrupted by geopolitical tensions and the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic. India, on the other hand, stands to benefit from greater access to Australian expertise in sectors where it seeks to grow, such as renewable energy, education, and agriculture. The CECA’s success could serve as a model for other nations looking to strengthen economic ties amid the growing volatility in global trade. The economic potential of CECA is immense. Two-way trade between Australia and India was valued at $46.5 billion in 2022, making India Australia’s sixth-largest trading partner. For Australia, India represents a rapidly growing market, particularly in services like education and healthcare, where Australian institutions and companies have already made significant inroads. Indian students form one of the largest groups of international students in Australia, contributing not just to the education sector but to the broader economy through jobs and services. The CECA could make it easier for Australian educational institutions to establish partnerships in India, expanding opportunities for both countries in the knowledge economy.

Similarly, Australia’s agricultural sector could gain considerably from greater access to Indian markets. India’s growing middle class, with its rising demand for high-quality food products, presents a lucrative opportunity for Australian exporters. At the same time, India could benefit from Australian expertise in agritech, irrigation, and sustainable farming, which could help address some of the challenges faced by Indian agriculture, such as water scarcity and inefficiency. Energy and resources are other critical sectors where the CECA could have far-reaching impacts. Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of coal, iron

ore, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), all of which are crucial for India’s growing industrial base. However, as both nations shift toward greener energy sources, the CECA could pave the way for greater collaboration in renewable energy, particularly in solar, wind, and hydrogen. India, with its ambitious renewable energy targets, stands to benefit from Australian expertise and investment in these areas.

One of the most significant aspects of the CECA negotiations is the focus on investment. While trade in goods and services is important, the flow of investment between Australia and India has not reached its full potential. By addressing barriers to investment, such as regulatory hurdles and protectionist policies, the CECA could unlock new avenues for businesses in both countries. This could be particularly beneficial for India’s infrastructure sector, which requires significant foreign investment to meet its ambitious goals for urban development, transport, and energy.

Australia’s financial services sector could also find new opportunities in India, especially as India continues to liberalize its financial markets. With growing demand for banking, insurance, and fintech services in India, Australian firms are well-positioned to contribute to and benefit from India’s financial revolution. Additionally, as Indian companies seek to expand globally, Australian markets could offer a gateway for Indian firms to reach other parts of the AsiaPacific region.

Despite these positive developments, there remain challenges to overcome before the CECA can be finalized. Issues such as labor mobility, digital trade, and intellectual property protection are likely to be contentious. Australia has traditionally been cautious about opening its labor market, while India has sought greater access for its skilled professionals, particularly in sectors such as information technology and engineering. Finding a middle ground on these issues will be critical for the CECA’s success. Moreover, the geopolitical environment in which these negotiations are taking place adds a layer of complexity. Both Australia and India have been affected by the ongoing strategic competition between the United States and China. While the CECA is primarily an economic agreement, it is also part of a broader effort by both countries to diversify their economic relationships and reduce their dependence on any single market. The Indo-Pacific region is increasingly becoming a focal point for trade and investment, and the CECA could help position Australia and India as key players in this evolving landscape.

Bitter words and sour laddus, declining political discourse

New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS) When Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to take "strong action" against those using foul language, it came across as holier-than-thou.

The letter was countered by BJP chief J.P. Nadda, saying the Congress has a "history of using abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and OBCs (Other Backward Classes)". In response, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her disappointment on social media platform X, noting that the PM did not respond personally but instead had BJP President Nadda pen an "inferior and aggressive" reply.

The whole episode seems amusing. Who is accusing whom and who is justifying what –seems riddle-like but leaves the taste of a laddu gone sour.

In fact, the laddu itself has recently been embroiled in controversy following Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's shocking

revelations about Tirupati Prasadam.

If God's prasad can be adulterated for profit, then using foul language is the quickest and easiest way to degrade and shout down opponents. And politicians using them is nothing shocking. Foul words and barbs have now become the norm and the one who seems to be getting these most is the Prime Minister himself.

Leading the pack is none other than Congress, which has been running the "Mohabbat Ki Dukaan" while simultaneously using the harshest words and expressions against the PM. Several Congress leaders have been facing several defamation cases also.

The language of the politicians across the party lines worsens when the elections are near and leaders do not hesitate to castigate each other. This has become more frequent in the last decade.

It started earlier during the campaigning for the Gujarat

Assembly elections when Congress veteran, then party president and currently a Rajya Sabha member Sonia Gandhi called PM Modi a 'Maut Ka Saudagar'. Congress lost the election heavily and the BJP scored a landslide victory. It's not as though politicians have only recently started losing control over their language. Foul words have been used often by various leaders earlier also, but the difference now is that those at the helm of party affairs are themselves leading the case.

During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when Narendra Modi was the BJP’s prime ministerial face and he was fighting his first Lok Sabha polls, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said, "He could sell tea at a Congress conclave." In the 2017 Gujarat elections, Aiyar again targeted PM Modi and referred to him as "Neech Aadmi".

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is facing a defamation case for a comment he made in October 2018, claiming that an unnamed RSS leader compared PM Modi to "a scorpion sitting on a Shivling".

Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi referred to PM Modi as 'Chowkidar Chor Hai', which the BJP countered with the 'Main Bhi Chowkidar' campaign. Congress suffered a

historic defeat in the elections and the BJP registered a huge victory with 353 seats in Lok Sabha, its highest tally ever.

Not learning from the mistakes, Kharge while addressing a rally in Ahmedabad in November 2022 called PM Modi a "Ravan". "We see your (Modi’s) face in corporation elections, MLA elections or MP elections, everywhere... Do you have 100 heads like Raavan?”

In March 2023. Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Parliament after he was sentenced to two years in prison in a defamation case. He was convicted by a court in Gujarat for 2019 comments about PM Modi's surname at an election rally.

Rahul Gandhi during a rally in Rajasthan in November 2023 called PM Modi “panauti”. Gandhi said India lost the 2023 World Cup final match against Australia due to PM Modi's presence, "... Our guys were playing well they would have won the World Cup. But 'Panauti' made us lose..." Gandhi, himself has been facing jibes regularly with 'Pappu' being the most used one. PM Modi often indirectly calls him a "Shehzada" during election speeches.

In July, while replying to a discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha, the PM called the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi a 'balak buddhi' (a

grown man with a child's mind)’. Recently, after Rahul Gandhi's speeches in the US, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu called him the "number one terrorist of the country".

Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad announced a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh for "chopping off the tongue" of Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the reservation. A BJP MP from Maharashtra Anil Bonde said his tongue should be "scalded" after what he spoke on reservations.

The growing usage of foul language and mudslinging is even being commented upon by the courts too. Recently, the Karnataka High Court said, "... what is happening is individual mudslinging by political party leaders and members of all political parties... it is a lot of nonstop mudslinging against each other and washing dirty linen in public...," Justice M. Nagaprasanna orally remarked during the hearing of some defamation petitions of political leaders.

The leaders making pathetic remarks against each other are setting crude examples before the public. Will it get worse, or will better sense prevail? It's a difficult question with no clear answer. But, the laddus which are under scrutiny now, are surely going to be real holy and sweeter.

China’s desperation to save its demographic crisis

New Delhi: The People's Republic of China (PRC) has recently abolished its longstanding foreign adoption policy, which had been in effect for over thirty years, effectively halting cross-border adoptions.

Mao Ning, the spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, asserted that this policy shift aligns with global trends. However, this decision has raised concerns among many, particularly in the United States, regarding the status of pending adoption applications in China. In recent years, China has implemented a series of reforms aimed at addressing its demographic challenges, which are largely a consequence of the former 'onechild' policy enforced from 1979 to 2015. As the country faces what is

perceived as a demographic crisis, it is now adopting new strategies and modifying existing policies to navigate these challenges.

In 1980, Deng Xiaoping introduced the one-child policy in China as a response to the population reaching nearly one billion, with the expectation that it would stimulate economic growth.

Unlike typical family planning strategies that rely on public education and encouragement, China adopted a more severe approach—strict enforcement.

The National Health and Family Planning Commission implemented a range of incentives and rewards for compliance with the one-child policy while imposing punitive measures, including hefty fines

and job losses for those who violated the rules.

The most extreme enforcement tactics involved forced abortions, sterilisations, and the insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs), which grossly infringed upon the reproductive rights of women in China. Official statistics from the Chinese health ministry indicate that approximately 336 million abortions, 196 million sterilisations, and 403 million IUD insertions occurred during this policy's enforcement, generating an estimated revenue of two trillion yuan (around $315 billion).

The implementation of China's one-child policy had severe consequences, particularly for the working class population. While the affluent could circumvent the policy's restrictions by paying substantial fines, the working class faced the most significant hardships. The policy deprived second-born children of basic rights, such as legal registration in the national household system, access to healthcare, and education.

As a result, many families were compelled to take drastic measures to avoid punishment. China's cultural preference for male children exacerbated the situation, leading to an increase in the abhorrent practice of female infanticide. Estimates

suggest that approximately 20 million female babies fell victim to sex-selective abortions. Other practices included child abandonment and adoption, predominantly involving female children. Consequently, China became the largest source of cross-border adoptions during the one-child policy era. The policy's enforcement was so draconian that it marked one of the darkest phases in China's history.

In 1981, the People's Republic of China established its first comprehensive legislation recognising adoption, which had previously been largely absent from Chinese cultural practices due to traditional beliefs surrounding the preservation of bloodlines. However, the onechild policy led to a cultural shift towards adoption as a means of navigating the severe penalties associated with policy violations.

The 1991 Adoption Law introduced significant reforms for domestic adoptions, allowing childless citizens under 35 to adopt collateral blood relatives without facing the usual legal restrictions. Consequently, there was an increase in domestic adoptions, particularly involving secondborn children being surrendered to blood relatives, effectively severing their legal ties to

their birth parents even if they continued to be raised by them. Further amendments to the Adoption Law in 1998 lowered the minimum age for adoptive parents to 30 and broadened access to children in social welfare institutions for adoption. These changes were likely a governmental response to the rising instances of child abandonment and informal adoptions. To facilitate the process further, China also began permitting foreign adoptions.

In 1988, China began permitting foreign adoptions, initially restricting eligibility to those of Chinese descent or individuals with strong ties to the country. However, the reforms introduced in the 1991 Adoption Law marked a significant shift, centralising and streamlining the process for cross-border adoptions.

It is estimated that approximately 160,000 children have been adopted internationally, with around 82,000 of these adoptions occurring in the United States over the past thirty years; this figure does not account for adoptions from the early 1980s and 1990s. Despite this progress, China also faced a troubling rise in illegal baby and child trafficking networks operating from provincial capitals, targeting

Indian tech startup ecosystem secures $7.6 bn in funding in 9 months, 6 new unicorns

Bengaluru, Sep 24 (IANS) India’s tech startup ecosystem secured $7.6 billion funding in the nine months this year, along with witnessing six new unicorns, a massive 500 per cent increase compared to just one unicorn in 2023, a report showed on Tuesday. The initial public offering (IPO) numbers have surged, with 29 tech companies going public in 2024 (year to date), compared to 15 during the same period in 2023, according to the report by Tracxn, a SaaS-based market intelligence platform.

According to the report, India's economy has shown resilience in 2024, achieving an 8.2 per cent GDP growth rate for FY24,

surpassing earlier estimates and the 7 per cent growth of the previous fiscal year.

“Despite the broader economic challenges, India’s tech ecosystem continues to demonstrate resilience,” said Neha Singh, Cofounder Tracxn.

The emergence of six new unicorns and a surge in IPOs with 29 tech companies going public in 2024 (YTD) reflects investor confidence in the sector.

“While overall funding has slowed, late-stage investments and the increasing momentum in fintech and retail show that innovation-driven growth is still thriving in India’s startup landscape,” she mentioned.

The India tech ecosystem saw 12 funding rounds exceeding $100 million in 2024 YTD, with Zepto raising $1 billion across two consecutive rounds, making it the only company to secure over $500 million this year.

The majority of funding came from late-stage rounds, which

garnered $4.7 billion, compared to $4.9 billion in 2023 and $14.3 billion in 2022.

Retail, fintech and food and agriculture tech have emerged as the top-performing sectors. The retail sector, in particular, attracted $1.95 billion in 2024 YTD, reflecting a 23 per cent increase from 2023 but a 61 per cent drop from 2022.

Fintech emerged as the second highest funded sector, securing $1.49 billion, the report mentioned.

Bengaluru, Mumbai and Gurugram emerged as the topfunded cities, with Bengaluru alone accounting for over 35 per cent of the total funding in the tech sector.

India is projected to become the world's third-largest economy by 2027 with a GDP exceeding $5 trillion, the country’s large consumer base, young population, and rising urban incomes position it for continued growth.

AI hardware and software market likely to reach up to $990 billion by 2027

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) The global market for AI-related hardware and software is likely to reach between $780 billion and $990 billion by 2027, growing between 40 per cent and 55 per cent annually, according to a report on Wednesday.

Larger data centres could drive costs to between $10 billion and $25 billion in five years, as per research by Bain & Company.

David Crawford, chairman of Bain’s Global Technology practice, said that Generative AI is the prime mover of the current wave of change, but it is complicated by post-globalization shifts and the

need to adapt business processes to deliver value.

“Companies are moving beyond the experimentation phase and are beginning to scale generative AI across the enterprise. As they do, CIOs will need to maintain production-grade AI solutions that will enable companies to adapt to a landscape that is quickly shifting,” Crawford mentioned.

Three key areas of opportunities – bigger models and larger data centres, enterprise and sovereign AI initiatives, and software efficiency and capabilities – could enable the AI hardware and software market to come close to a trillion-dollar industry in the next three years.

AI workloads could grow 25 per cent to 35 per cent per year through 2027, Bain estimates. As AI scales, the need for computing power will radically expand the

scale of large data centres over the next five to 10 years.

AI will spur growth in data centres, from today’s 50–200 megawatts to more than a gigawatt.

These changes are expected to have huge implications on the ecosystems that support data centres including infrastructure engineering, power production, and cooling, as well as strain supply chains.

The AI-driven surge in demand for graphics processing units (GPUs) could also increase total demand for certain upstream components by 30 per cent or more by 2026. The arrival of generative AI has added pressure on software development companies to demonstrate greater efficiency. Generative AI appears to save about 10 per cent to 15 per cent of total software engineering time, said the report.

India needs 10-12 Champion States to become $30 trillion economy by 2047: Kant

New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS) In order to become a $30 trillion economy by 2047, India needs about 10 to 12 ‘Champion States’ that consistently grow at over 10 per cent for the next couple of decades, G20 Sherpa and former NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant, said on Friday.

Speaking exclusively to IANS in the national Capital, Kant said states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu delivered strong growth for a long period but now, the country needs a whole new range of ‘Champion States’ to help it become the third-largest economy faster than projected, and then move towards the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.

“States are very critical. Without states growing, we will not be able to achieve our goals. India needs about 10 to 12 ‘Champion States’ that grow at 10 per cent plus. We

Laos to host ASEAN business, investment summit to boost regional economic integration

Vientiane, Sep 24 (IANS) Laos will host the annual ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS) 2024 while chairing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in order to boost regional business and investment integration and networking with dialogue partners.

Representatives from the member states of the ASEAN and dialogue partners will participate in this summit, scheduled to take place in Lao capital Vientiane from October 8 to 11, Xinhua news agency said quoting a report in the local Pasaxon newspaper on Tuesday.

Indian economy projected to grow at 7.1 pc in FY25:

Moody’s Analytics

Mumbai, Sep 24 (IANS) The Indian economy is projected to grow faster at 7.1 per cent this fiscal (FY25), Moody’s Analytics said on Tuesday, as the country continues to remain resilient amid global uncertainties.

In its new Asia Pacific outlook, the global credit ratings kept the country’s growth forecast unchanged at 6.5 per cent for 2025 while projecting faster growth of 6.6 per cent in 2026.

need states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan to grow faster than ever,” Kant emphasised.

According to him, India must strive towards the $30 trillion economy goal in the next 20 years, not just becoming a $10 trillion economy by 2030 or 2032.

“To achieve this ambitious goal, these states need to grow at 10 to 12 per cent per annum for the next three decades. If they start growing at a rapid rate then the rest of India will automatically grow.

Moody’s Analytics projected better inflation outcomes, as it reduced India’s inflation forecast to 4.7 per cent from the 5 per cent predicted earlier.

The country’s inflation remained below 4 per cent in July and August.

The 2025 and 2026 forecast was unchanged at 4.5 per cent and 4.1 per cent, respectively.

For the Asia Pacific region, Moody’s raised the 2025 forecast to 4 per cent from 3.9 per cent as projected earlier.

Exports have been a key driver for the region, but growth rests on an unstable footing. Key export drivers such as chips are losing

steam. Global goods demand has been soft.

And China's policy-led ramp-up in exports has sparked protectionism abroad, said Moody’s.

Earlier in the day, S&P Global Ratings retained India's growth forecast at 6.8 per cent for the fiscal 2024-25. The global ratings said that In India, GDP growth moderated in the June quarter as high interest rates temper urban demand, in line with our projection of 6.8 for GDP for the full fiscal year 2024-2025. The rating agency also retained India's growth forecast for FY 2025-26 at 6.9 per cent. According to the report, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) considers food inflation a hurdle for rate cuts.

"Our outlook remains unchanged: we expect the RBI to begin cutting rates in October at the earliest and have pencilled in two rate cuts this fiscal year (year ending March 2025)," said the report. The year-on-year inflation rate at 3.65 per cent, based on the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI), for August was the second lowest in the last five years.

In July, the inflation rate (3.54 per cent) had fallen below the RBI’s medium-term target of 4 per cent for the first time.

The event brought together members of the Indian community in Melbourne, encouraging the use of Hindi and celebrating its cultural significance on a global stage.

cross-border adoptions.

Tens of thousands of children were reportedly sold to orphanages each year for foreign adoption without the knowledge of prospective adopters. This illicit activity peaked in 2005, prompting China to impose stricter regulations on foreign adoptions through enhanced requirements in 2007 and again in 2015.

The one-child policy was abruptly terminated in 2016, resulting in various demographic challenges for China, including significant gender imbalance, a decline in the total fertility rate among females, and a growing tendency among the population to remain childless.

In response to these issues, the government has implemented new policies aimed at encouraging larger families. This shift is evident in the introduction of the two-child policy in 2016, followed by the three-child policy in 2021, and the provision of extended paid marriage leave to enhance fertility rates in 2023— an increase of 360 degrees from previous regulations. Concurrently, additional

measures have been enacted to address economic difficulties arising from these demographic changes. The inverted age structure, characterised by a rapidly increasing elderly population, has prompted recent decisions to raise the retirement age over the next five years.

The decline in the workingage population, combined with rising youth unemployment, has emerged as a consequence of China's family and economic planning strategies, particularly following the zero-COVID policy.

Estimates from 2019 indicated that the state pension fund could be depleted by 2035, alongside reductions in medical benefits for retirees, further complicating China's situation amid a shrinking population and the slowest growth rate recorded in sixty years.

The ongoing fluctuations in China's demographic statistics continue to illustrate the profound effects of the one-child policy and the nation's urgent attempts to rectify its historical mistakes. The recent decision to halt foreign adoptions is yet another indication of China's desperation to address its demographic challenges.

How calmness helped Radha Yadav land a spot in India’s Women’s T20 WC squad

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) In a video posted on the Women’s Premier League ‘X’ account in March, Jemimah Rodrigues revealed left-arm spinner Radha Yadav had her YouTube viewing history filled with ‘Virat Kohli aggression videos’

“One has to be a little pumped up, and he’s my idol. So, I always see him before every match and see the passion he plays with in the field. I can really relate to him a lot and that’s why I see those videos,” said Radha at that time.

Now, with less than 10 days for the Women’s T20 World Cup to begin in the UAE, dressed in a white shirt and black jeans, Radha is all smiles on the sidelines of an ad shoot for Qua Clothing, whose collection she says, speaks to her style – simple yet bold.

“Fashion, for me, is about feeling empowered. When I wear something that makes me feel good, I carry that confidence with me, whether it’s on the field or in life. This association feels natural because their clothes give me the freedom to move, to feel comfortable, and to still look stylish, no matter the occasion.”

A tattoo on her right forearm, featuring a rose and compass, catches immediate attention.

Radha chooses not to share the meaning behind the tattoo, stating her immense interest in sporting one led her to get it done. Radha’s build-up to the Women’s T20 World Cup didn’t have a smooth start as she had to be rescued by NDRF during floods in Vadodara, Gujarat in late August.

“It rained for two-three days actually. There was a lot of water in the dam and then they opened up the gates. Due to that, 60% of the city was in water – I am not sure if it was more or less. But all of these things happened, and moreover the drinking water was over.”

“We were collecting rain water in our buckets. Due to difficulties caused by these situations, we were just having one sip of water in every two-three hours. We didn’t even eat anything as there was no water in the washroom. The situation was such that there was no water despite so much of it being around, whether it was at home or outside of it,” says Radha in an exclusive conversation with IANS.

So far, 2024 has been a fruitful year for Radha – picking ten wickets in nine games at an economy rate of 7.48 for Delhi Capitals in second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where they finished runners-up. Those exploits led to her being selected for the Indian team after almost a year, for the T20I tour of Bangladesh in April-May. She continued to showcase her skills in subsequent home series against South Africa and the Women’s Asia Cup in July.

Now, she’s all set to play her fourth Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. “It was very good (on coming back to Indian team this year). Like, I always say, my only job is to work hard and do it with honesty – like training, winning, and everything else are the byproducts. So that’s what I keep in mind all the time,” she adds.

Radha’s performances in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup were lacklustre, picking only three wickets in four games. She then had a disappointing time in the inaugural WPL, taking only four wickets in nine matches for the Capitals. The emergence of spinners like Saika Ishaque and Shreyanka Patil in WPL led to Radha being left out of the Indian team.

In her path to get back into national reckoning, Radha discovered the solution laid in to embrace calmness and controlling her aggression. “I thought a lot about what was going on. I was doing things in a hurried pace.

My support system, especially the friends, told me to take some time, and bring in that calmness.”

“Our (head) coach Amol (Muzumdar) sir also says that controlled aggression is very important. So that was the thing which I figured out somehow, and that came out on its own.

I have now kept some bit of aggression aside and brought a lot of calmness in the game. This change has helped me a lot.”

Besides bringing in calmness, Radha has also embraced a mindset of living in the present and not worrying too much about the future. “My friends were saying that you are so much into cricket that don’t know how to enjoy life. Like, you have to go out sometimes, not always or go on a drive.”

“I used to feel that cricket is the only thing that I have in life that keeps it full. So I have eased out on this front, like I now think that cricket is just a part and life is way bigger than it. I have now understood that point and it has also helped me.”

The impact of these changes in Radha’s approach was evident in her performances during WPL 2024. She displayed increased confidence and precision in her bowling, while maintaining her

trademark exuberance when celebrating wickets - like when taking an impressive 4-20 against UP Warriorz in Bengaluru.

Radha’s bowling strategy before WPL 2024 primarily revolved around targeting the stumps, which made her ball deliveries more predictable. However, during the tournament, she bowled wider lines and occasionally bowled slower through the air to take wickets. Upon returning to the Indian team, Radha continued to implement this approach, and she credits this shift to the strategies plotted in team meetings.

“Changing a little bit of lines is as per the team plan, as every batter is different. For certain batters, it is needed to bowl more at the stumps, while sometimes bowling wide or fuller is required. So, the team plan becomes to bowl as per that.”

The experiences of learning from foreign players during two WPL seasons have enriched Radha’s time of playing in DC colours. “To learn about their culture, how they go about playing their games, the mindset around it, as well as talking and asking about that - all these things have helped a lot. We also felt that after learning a lot of things from them, you may make a mistake, but how to make a comeback from it is the important thing.”

Observing Meg Lanning made Radha’s quest to embrace calmness easier. “Meg is very calm under pressure. She understands very quickly how things are going to happen and what is the next step. She has been playing for so many years and that’s how she’s got that intricate understanding of what will happen next, what is my next option which can be tried.”

Radha commends the excellent camaraderie within the Indian spin bowling group, which includes herself, Shreyanka, Deepti Sharma, and Asha Sobhana, as India expects them to play a crucial role in their matches at Dubai and Sharjah during the T20 World Cup.

“Even before the WPL happened, we have had played together in domestic cricket. It is not that difficult for us and we enjoy a lot. We keep telling each other how to do this in certain conditions or how to bowl against a certain batter. So, we talk a lot about our planning against teams.”

Outside of cricket, Radha calls herself as a very easy-going person and cannot understand how she’s able to talk so much right now in this interview with IANS. “Sometimes I play FIFA. I like going to cafes a lot with the friends and sometimes have a coffee. Normal americano coffee without sugar is my favourite.”

Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy have very little value to talk about in Indian cricket

The two most prestigious tournaments of the year for an Indian cricketer were the Duleep Trophy and the Irani Trophy. The latter was even more significant, as consistent and valuable performances in it are what got one into the Rest of India side to play the Ranji Trophy champions. One was then, just a step away from attaining the dream of playing for the country.

The lines of the song by Whitney Houston, "Give me just one moment in time" one could say were so relevant for each player playing in it. Just one eye catching performance in the game was all that it took to leave a telling mark in the minds of the national selectors. One was, thereafter, very much in the reckoning for an Indian cap. For the established players, it gave them an opportunity to establish their credentials and view the next in line.

The team and players who truly benefited from the Irani Trophy was Bombay/Mumbai. Being national Ranji Trophy champions on so many occasions, the players automatically got a platform that could bring them into the limelight without making a substantial contribution in the domestic scene. Whereas, the rest of India players, in order to get selected, had to perform incredibly well to be there. That is why winning the Ranji Trophy tournament was so important, as players from the winning side had the opportunity to showcase their talent on the big Irani Trophy stage. This was normally the only match that was watched together by each and every Indian selector. One in which they could exchange their views and preferences.

The Duleep trophy ,on the other hand ,was fought on a zonal format. It comprised of players who had in their respective zones done consistently well. Each player was respected by their zonal teammates because of one’s performance. There seemed to be an aura of camaraderie and selfrespect that got evoked, as players would have done well in the matches played between them. There was a feeling of oneness and companionship amongst the players in each of the Zonal sides. This brought about a competitive spirit that led to each one fighting hard to win the trophy for their respective zone. A Duleep Trophy win was a significant milestone in a domestic players career and one that stood out quite prominently

at the end of it.

Unfortunately, both the Duleep and Irani Trophy have become insignificant. The alphabetic symbol denoting the teams in the Duleep Trophy and the ready mix of players jumbled together in it has lost its very importance of what the tournament stood for. There was barely a celebration or concern, even in the press and multi-media platforms, after Team A’s victory, recently. The 2024 tournament basically stood for individual performances, each player concerned only about himself. The basic values of teamwork, loyalty, oneness and playing for one another that is so important in sports were absent. It was a sad reflection to see a tournament that was established in 1961-62 dwindle from its high value to one just there to complete a ritual that had no weightage to it.

The Irani Trophy that was established in 1960 seems to be also going south in the same way. For it to be played when the national side is playing a Test series and a T20 one against Bangladesh shows the value that Indian cricket is giving to it. The success of the T20 and the Indian Premier League (IPL) has further reduced the importance of both the Duleep and Irani Trophy. The Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 domestic tournament has become a far more important tournament for a domestic cricketer. A good performance in it, could lead one to becoming a part of an IPL franchise. From there, one could catapult into the national side and, if not, a good financial contract.

How one can boost both the Duleep and the Irani Trophy tournaments is, therefore, a very difficult task. With players more keen to play the shorter limited overs version of the game, the vision of an aspiring domestic cricketer to play any other format is significantly reducing. The local T20 tournaments that are being conducted by most state associations are further leading cricketers to concentrate and focus their sight on playing the bang bang version.

The Indian cricket scenario is changing drastically. The transformation is diminishing the value of playing the longer and more conventional form of the game.

One way maybe to revive the Duleep trophy would be to go back to the zonal format with all the top Indian cricketers playing in it. As regards the Irani Trophy, it requires to be given an important slot in the Indian cricket calendar, which would have relevance in the selection of the Indian Test squad.

Sukanya Ghosh explores belonging, identity as Artist-in-Residence at Royal College of Art

One look at the diverse works produced by her over the last few years, and it is not tough to decipher that at the very soul, her engagement with the world comprises layering, erasure, and collage.

Sukanya Ghosh, the Artistin-Residence at the Senior Artist Residency Programme launched by the Serendipity Arts Foundation and the Royal College of Art (RCA), works through a trajectory of image fragments and tonal complements.

It is the first time in its 120 years of existence that the Royal College of Art, London, has opened its studios to an artist of South Asian origin.

“By juxtaposing different parts of the image and reducing them to a play of line, tone, and colour, I reach a position of abstraction -new landscapes of crisscrossing meanings and overlapping connections.

"While I have been preoccupied with working with discarded photographs from my family archive, I have often used both analogue and digital photographs in my work. I enjoy building up textural and semiotic layers through the use of physical materials such as cloth, paper, paint, thread, plastic, etc,” Ghosh told IANS from London.

Her practice spans painting, photography, animation, and moving images, as her storytelling explores questions of belonging, identity, and place.

For the residency project, Ghosh is using everyday household

and grocery lists from her grandmother’s notebooks as a starting point to deliberate on the larger exploration of travel, displacement, and being somewhere else while deciphering the things that ground individuals.

Memory and found objects have always fascinated Ghosh. She feels that what is remembered is a fragile notion, and she likes to play with this to press forward into thinking about the world around us today.

“Found images and objects carry that slight sense of intrigue and excitement because they are ‘found’, which may mean they might have been lost somehow. I like the mystery of this, and the idea that I can play around with the essential meaning of these things,” said the artist who lives and works between Delhi and Kolkata.

Stressing that her ongoing residency experience has been stimulating and invigorating, she added that it is enjoyable being amid a bustling student community and teaching environment.

“I have used some of the splendid facilities that RCA has and most of all I have found so many new and fresh ideas on artistic practice and the making of work. Besides, I have never believed in adopting a competitive mindset.

“There is a place in the world for all artists. Some take time to flower or gain enough confidence in their work. To expose everyone to a sense that one must immediately find a gallery and

sell work creates a precarious and dangerously fragile ecosystem,” said the occasional design teacher and arts programme manager. For Ghosh, spending time at any residency is always enriching, primarily because it provides an immersion into a different space. This difference can be at diverse levels -- a different country, a different cultural context, a different working process, or even a different way of looking at things.

“This provides a critical breathing space in one’s practice - to step back and look at one’s work in another light,” she said. The artist is spending her time at the residency ruminating on the idea of home, belonging, and identity.

"I am thinking of 'being away' and what it means in various contexts, and trying to chart a path that looks outwards at the larger implications of ‘away’. Who becomes a migrant, a settler, or a traveller? And what are the things that denote ‘home’," she said. Ghosh, who has always believed in the importance of looking inward to look forward, feels that the intimate and the personal are vital to understanding or even approaching larger ideas. And that artists do not live in a vacuum - and sometimes the way of processing the things that occur around them in the world is to examine the minutiae of their lived experience.

“The path forward is to take these learnings to examine the larger implications of what could be. The past... well, it takes us forward into a new fictional space to think of other things like location and identity,” she added.

While India is witnessing the setting-up of several private art foundations and museums, Ghosh feels considering the size of this country, we need many more public and private ones.

“Only then can there be a discourse on fair practices and equal opportunities. There are certainly many more chances that have opened up because of private foundations and museums. But again, we need more,” she concluded.

Breaking Free from Professional Habits

Asseasoned professionals, we often pride ourselves on our expertise and accumulated knowledge. However, what if some of that knowledge is holding us back? What if the habits we've developed over decades are actually hindering our progress rather than propelling us forward? My own journey in unlearning, particularly through the lens of my experience with swimming, sheds light on the importance of breaking free from ingrained habits and embracing change in our professional lives. Allow me to share a personal anecdote that resonates deeply with the concept of unlearning. Despite my passion for swimming, I found myself struggling to improve for over four decades. It wasn't because of a lack of effort or determination, but rather because I had learned the wrong techniques at an early age. Swimming alongside friends in a river, I absorbed habits that stuck with me throughout my life, hindering my progress despite my best intentions.

Finally acknowledging the need for change, I enrolled in a beginner's swimming course. The process of unlearning was arduous; it required me to confront not only physical challenges but also the mental resistance to change. Watching others progress while I struggled to undo years of ingrained habits was a humbling experience. Yet, with perseverance and dedication, I began to see incremental improvements.

The parallels between my swimming journey and professional life are striking. Just as I had unknowingly absorbed detrimental habits in swimming,

so too can we pick up negative behaviours in our careers. Our first job, our initial experiences with bosses and colleagues— they all shape our professional identity. Yet, over time, some of these habits can become obstacles to growth and success.

Too often, we attribute our professional challenges to external factors—the current workplace culture, our managers, or the industry itself. Yet, true growth requires introspection and a willingness to unlearn ingrained behaviours that no longer serve us. It's about challenging the status quo, breaking free from the comfort of familiarity, and embracing the discomfort of change.

Unlearning is not a one-time event but an ongoing process— one that demands resilience, humility, and self-awareness. It requires us to confront our own limitations and biases, to question long-held assumptions, and to embrace new perspectives and ways of working. It's about recognizing that the path to success is not always linear, and that failure is an essential part of the learning process.

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the ability to unlearn and relearn is more critical than ever. The skills and knowledge that brought us success in the past may not be sufficient to navigate the challenges of tomorrow. By embracing the art of unlearning, we open ourselves up to new possibilities, innovation, and growth.

Business leaders, I urge you to reflect on your own professional journey.

‘Plays were part of the air we breathed’: Amal Allana remembers Ebrahim Alkazi

As his daughter, he treated her with the utmost care and was loving and protective. As a student, he was a hard, even harsh, taskmaster and pushed her to give her very best. But when she designed costumes for some of his productions, he treated her

as a professional and gave her complete freedom to express her creative ideas.

Former Chairperson of the National School of Drama (NSD) Amal Allana, who recently wrote 'Ebrahim Alkazi: Holding Time Captive' (Penguin), told IANS that in all these associations, her relationship with the father of modern Indian theatre altered, thus giving her an insight into different aspects of his character, personality, and sense of

aesthetics.

Alkazi was not just the founding director of NSD but also someone who lent new metaphors to Indian theatre and metamorphosed it through his unique vision, as through his production of Girish Karnad's 'Tughlaq' at Delhi's Purana Qila in 1972, which is considered to be one of the finest theatre productions till date, and trained a generation of theatre persons who have been instrumental in breaking new

grounds in every sense of the word.

Allana said that in writing this biography, she has had the opportunity to study her father's life and work in greater detail, albeit more dispassionately.

"Also, yet another aspect of my research included studying his artworks, leading me to curate several projects on him," she said. "Working on these projects has helped me clarify and gain a fuller, overall perspective of

what he aspired for and set out to achieve throughout his life."

One wonders if the daughter was under any 'pressure', considering she was writing about such a towering personality. She confessed that unconsciously she may have felt the pressure, though her father allowed her the greatest freedom to find herself as a theatre artiste.

"Once I left NSD, he never offered any criticism of my work but was supportive of it from a distance.

Sunita Williams celebrates 59th birthday, second in space

Delhi, Sep 20 (IANS) Indianorigin astronaut Sunita Williams has celebrated her 59th birthday -- the second in space.

Williams is currently stranded at the International Space Station (ISS) after Boeing’s faulty Starliner spacecraft was declared unfit for human travel by NASA. While Starliner is back on Earth unharmed, Williams is expected to return on SpaceX’s capsule in February next year.

Williams marked her 59th birthday aboard the ISS on September 19. She dedicated her day to vital maintenance tasks and scientific research on the orbiting lab.

Along with fellow astronaut Don

Pettit, she worked on maintaining life support systems on the ISS.

The astronaut duo then replaced filters in the station's waste and hygiene compartment -- called the space bathroom.

The 59-year-old created history by becoming the first woman to fly on the maiden mission of the Starliner. The Starliner flight is Williams’s third to space -- the first being in 2006 and the second in 2012.

According to NASA, "Sunita has spent a cumulative total of 322 days in space”, and she is the second woman astronaut with the highest number of spacewalks.

On her birthday, Williams received a rendition of legendary singer Mohd Rafi's birthday song 'Bar bar din ye aaye' from Indian music company Saregama.

In a post on Instagram, Saregama shared: "Come on India let's sing #HappyBirthdaySunita along with India's biggest icons and send our collective wishes to Astronaut Sunita Williams up in space. Use #HappyBirthdaySunita to post your videos and Tag @saregama_ official".

In the video shared along with the post, film director Karan Johar, and iconic singers Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Hariharan, and Neeti Mohan sang the song to wish her

Depression during pregnancy linked to specific brain activity: Study

New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS)

Scientists have linked symptoms of depression during pregnancy to a specific brain activity, and hope to develop test for “baby blues” risk.

Around 80 per cent of women suffer from “baby blues” after the birth of their child.

Normally, this is a brief period of feeling down which disappears in a few days. But around one woman in seven develops postpartum depression, a more serious depression which can affect how mothers bond with their baby and can have longterm consequences. These women seem unable to regulate the negative emotions which can follow giving birth.

A group of European researchers have found that in healthy pregnant women, activity in a specific area deep in the brain is linked to regulation of negative emotions and the tendency towards symptoms of depression.

The researchers hope that testing for this activity, along with how emotions are regulated, will indicate which women are at risk for postpartum depression.

“This is among the first trials to compare brain activity in pregnant and non-pregnant women. The ability to regulate emotions is essential for mental health, and this interplay was our starting point,” said Franziska Weinmar, University of Tubingen, Germany.

For the study, the researchers took 15 healthy pregnant women with very high oestrogen levels (due to the pregnancy).

Each woman was put in an MRI scanner and shown upsetting/ disturbing pictures. The team found that in the MRI scans,

pregnant women who showed more activity in the amygdala while regulating their emotions were less successful in controlling emotions.

In addition, pregnant women with this greater activity in the amygdala reported more symptoms of depression.

“If larger studies confirm higher activity in the amygdala in women at risk of postpartum depression, we could assess and specifically target these women during this vulnerable phase,” said Weinmar.

Dr Susana Carmona from Gregorio Maranon Hospital, Madrid, said we still have a long way to go in characterising what happens in the brain during pregnancy, identifying biomarkers that can indicate the risk of developing perinatal mental disorders, and designing strategies to prevent mother and infant suffering during the delicate and critical peripartum period”.

Study shows antidepressants may improve brain function

New Delhi, Sep 23 (IANS) A class of drugs that are commonly prescribed to treat depression, and anxiety may also help improve brain function and memory, claimed a study.

The study, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, showed that SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) antidepressants have the potential to improve certain cognitive functions, such as verbal memory.

Verbal memory is the ability to remember words, sentences, stories, and other information presented through language. Serotonin is often described as a ‘feel good’ chemical, and higher levels of serotonin circulating in the brain contribute to a sense of well-being, and can ease clinical depression in most sufferers.

Researchers from the Copenhagen University Hospital in the Netherlands measured brain function in 90 patients before and after taking the SSRI escitalopram daily for eight weeks.

The team scanned the participant's brain to measure the quantity of the serotonin receptor, the 5HT4 receptor. The patients were also given a series

of tests to measure mood and cognitive abilities.

About 40 patients were rescanned to measure the quantity of 5HT4 receptor in the brain.

The results showed that the levels of 5HT4 receptor had dropped by around 9 per cent in the brain and the mood of the patients also improved.

Further cognitive tests showed improvements, so that the less the 5HT4 receptor had changed the better the cognitive outcome. This phenomenon was particularly prominent for the ability to recall words, the researchers said. SSRI medication may be an “important pro-cognitive target to consider in optimising outcomes of antidepressant treatment,” said researcher Vibeke Dam from the Copenhagen University Hospital.

Prostate

Hyderabad, Sep 22 (IANS)

Prostate cancer is not just a medical condition; it has farreaching effects on a man's emotional well-being, his family, and society as a whole, say healthcare professionals.

Prostate cancer often carries a significant social stigma, impacting not only men's health but also their perceived masculinity as the prostate is a part of the genito-urinary system. Many men feel pressured to maintain an image of strength, making it difficult for them to openly discuss or seek help for health issues that may be seen as a sign of weakness.

Prostate cancer is one such ailment that can have profound social and psychological effects on those affected.

In recognition of this, September has been designated as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding the condition. Doctors say by promoting awareness and encouraging men to get regular screenings, the hope is to not only detect the disease early but also to reduce the negative societal impact that often accompanies it.

Speaking to IANS, healthcare professionals emphasise the importance of educating the public on this issue, given that prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, which are diagnosed in the later stages and has become a cause of concern.

"Prostate cancer is often regarded as a silent killer because the symptoms can remain hidden for years, which is why early detection is crucial. The stigma surrounding prostate health stems from a lack of open discussions. Many men

mistakenly associate issues like urinary problems or sexual dysfunction with a loss of masculinity, which prevents them from seeking medical help. We need to break this stigma by encouraging men to get regular screenings after the age of 50, or earlier if they have a family history of prostate cancer," said P. Venkatasimha, Senior Consultant Medical and Haemato Oncologist, Kamineni Hospital.

"It is essential to create awareness about how treatable prostate cancer can be if detected early. Advances in medical technology, including robotic surgeries and precision radiation, have significantly improved the prognosis for prostate cancer patients. However, the fear of being diagnosed, combined with societal pressures on men to stay silent about health issues, prevents many from seeking timely medical advice. Our goal during this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is to dispel the myths and provide accurate information about treatment options," added Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala, Consultant UroOncologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology.

Francis Sridhar Katumalla, Consultant Urologist, Andrologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon, KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur, is of the opinion that beyond the physical challenges, prostate cancer often has a psychological impact on patients and their families.

"Men are conditioned to believe that showing vulnerability, especially regarding sexual health, is a sign of weakness. This not only causes emotional strain but can also affect their relationships. Psychological support is just as important as medical treatment. Counselling and support groups can play a vital role in helping patients and their families cope with the emotional toll of cancer. We need to foster an environment where men feel safe to discuss these issues openly," said Sridhar Katumalla.

World Lung Day: Why non-smokers equally at risk for respiratory diseases

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) While the cause of lung diseases like lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has long been linked with smoking, an alarming increase in cases has been observed even amongst non-smokers, majorly due to passive smoking and air pollution, said experts on Wednesday.

World Lung Day is observed every year on September 25th to raise awareness about lung health and promote better lung care around the world.

Smoking is a major cause of lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Quitting smoking can significantly improve lung health and reduce the risk of developing these diseases. However, a significant increase in respiratory cases has been observed even amongst nonsmokers, said experts.

“These are mostly traced to an increased exposure to secondhand smoke and increased air pollution, which are significant

risk factors for lung disease. Microscopic pollutants have been found to penetrate the lungs and cause cell damage and inflammation within them, which over time, can induce cancerous mutations,” Dr. Sunil Kumar K, Lead Consultant - Interventional Pulmonology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, told IANS.

“Such chronic exposure to polluted air not only harms lung tissue but slowly weakens the immune defense of the body. Even for those who have never smoked, passive smoking poses a serious threat. Breathing in smoke from the environment from someone smoking nearby or lingering smoke indoors can be just as harmful,” the expert

added.

The residual toxins even from third-hand smoke that settle on surfaces also put individuals, especially children and pets, at risk of health problems.

The World Health Organization notes that 99 per cent of the world's population breathes unhealthy air. Climate change is a major driver of air pollution, which can impact lung health. Children, older adults, and people with existing respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable.

Other risk factors for lung problems in non-smokers include childhood respiratory infections that may prevail in adulthood

also, Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology - CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram told IANS.

“Repeated childhood infections may lead to bronchiectasis in lungs, and cystic problems can also destroy lungs,” the expert said Lung problems such as Respiratory infections, COPD, asthma, and TB infections are the most common among nonsmokers, majorly due to low immunity levels, Grover said.

According to Kumar, people in occupations like mining or construction are even more susceptible as they are continuously exposed to carcinogens, dust, and smoke, which disrupts their health.

the importance of maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, especially during the summer months. Don't let the sun and heat take a toll on your nail health; follow these expertrecommended tips to keep your nails looking fabulous.

Use the Right Tools

Using the right tools is crucial for maintaining nail health. Avoid metal cuticle pushers, as they can cause damage and increase infection risks. Instead, opt for wooden or rubber cuticle pushers. Additionally, always use sharp, clean nail clippers and files to prevent nail splitting and peeling.

Chase the sun, not the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.

Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.

"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.

Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends

to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."

While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."

The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

Zendaya reveals why fashion became important to her

Singer-actress

Zendaya has spoken about the pressures of fame and why fashion became an armor to her.

During a screening event held in New York City for “Dune: Part Two”, a question by the audience drew comparisons between the warnings of Messianic cult followings depicted in the epic sci-fi film and the state of celebrity fandoms in pop culture nowadays.

The panelists filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Austin Butler reeling with thoughts. However, Chalamet quipped: “If I start answering, you guys need to answer too though.”

True to the spirit of her character

Chani, Zendaya assured: “I’ll have your back, I gotcha.”

Zendaya spoke to her experience dealing with the allencompassing nature of being a celebrity.

“I feel like, often, I am not cut out for that part of it. I do love my job, I’m so grateful. I love doing the work, I love being on set, I do love moments like this — don’t get me wrong — but I am terrified of that part of it, often.”

Talking about her being an introvert, Zendaya added: “I was a shy kid, always have been, and so this part isn’t natural — that is a huge reason why fashion became important to me because it became like armor to pretend to go out and do the job,” reports deadline.com.

“So I don’t know if I, either, can fully relate, but I definitely understand what you’re saying, and I think that’s what’s terrifying to me,” she concluded. “I would like to be a person and for people to see me as that first.”

“I don’t necessarily know if I want or can handle all of that or want (that) — some people that’s part of it, they enjoy the power that comes from it, and I don’t know if that’s for me.”

Butler said he had nothing to add to Zendaya’s words.

This isn’t the first time Zendaya has been candid about her discomfort with fame, having talked about the “complicated feelings” she has toward child acting and stardom earlier this year.
