Himachal Assembly Speaker disqualifies six Cong rebel MLAs

Continued from Page 1

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu called Congress MLAs for a breakfast meeting here. Four MLAs, including Vikramaditya Singh, have not reached the CM's residence.

After the cross-voting by nine members, comprising three Independents and six Congress, there is a question mark over the survival of the Sukhvinder Sukhu-

led government.

The BJP has won the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh after six Congress MLAs crossvoted in the polls.

The six Congress MLAs who faced action are Sudhir Sharma (Dharamsala) and Rajinder Rana (Sujanpur), both ministerial aspirants; Inder Dutt Lakhanpal (Badsar); Ravi Thakur (LahaulSpiti); Chaitnaya Sharma (Gagret); and Devender Bhutto (Kutlehar).

In the 68-member Assembly, the Congress had 40 MLAs, while the BJP had 25 and three independent MLAs.

Now after the Speaker disqualified the six rebel Congress MLAs who voted in favour of the BJP, the strength of the House will come down to 62.

The halfway mark will be 31 and the majority will be 32, just two less than Congress' strength.

been piling for the last few years.

Incidentally, on Wednesday, the leader of the opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, commented that the Trinamool leader was in the safe custody of 'Mamata Police' since Tuesday midnight.

As per the latest information available, Shahjahan has been kept at a lockup within the premises of the Basirhat Subdivisional court, where he will be presented this morning after the court operations resume.

The state administration was under pressure for quite some time over Shahjahan remaining

absconding as there were allround criticism of him being deliberately sheltered by the state police following several local persons in Sandeshkhali claiming to have seen him in and around North 24 Parganas district.

Even a section of the Trinamool Congress leadership started claiming that the state police were unable to arrest him because of a stay on his arrest by the Calcutta High Court. However, Justice Sivangnanam, consecutively on Tuesday and Wednesday clarified that there was no stay on his arrest and the stay was just on the formation of a joint investigation committee of CBI and the state

police in investigating the matter of attack on ED and CAPF sleuths. Political observers feel that after Justice Sivangnanam, on Wednesday, made it clear that his arrest was the business of any agency, state and central, the state police came under immense pressure to act promptly in arresting him.

Sandeshkhali had been on the boil for the last few weeks with the local people, especially women, hitting the streets protesting against the oppression, including sexual harassment, by Shahjahan and his associates for the last so many years.

express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and his fans. May God give peace to the departed soul. Om Shanti) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also wrote in Hindi on X: "Ghazal gayan ki duniya mein apni amit chaap chodhne waale Pankaj Udhas ji ke nidhan se mujhe kaafi dukh ki anubhuti hui hai. Hindu prayers to continue at Gyanvapi, Allahabad HC rejects Masjid committee’s plea

court order, permitting the conduct of Hindu prayers in the southern cellar or basement (tehkhana) of the Gyanvapi Mosque.

The said order was passed amid an ongoing civil court case involving conflicting claims over the religious character of the Gyanvapi compound.

Among other claims, the Hindu side has said that Hindu prayers were earlier offered by the family of one Somnath Vyas in the mosque's cellar until 1993, when the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led government allegedly stopped it. The Muslim side has opposed this claim and maintained that Muslims have always had possession over the mosque's building. The main dispute over the Gyanvapi compound involves a claim by the Hindu side that

a section of an ancient temple on the said land was destroyed during the rule of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century.

The Muslim side has maintained that the mosque predated Aurangzeb's reign and that it had endured various alterations over time.

Following the Varanasi district court's order on January 31 which allowed priests to perform prayers before the idols in the southern cellar of Gyanvapi, religious ceremonies were performed on the mosque's premises at midnight on February 1.

Later, the southern cellar was opened to devotees.

On February 13, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also visited the Gyanvapi premises and worshipped at the 'Vyas Ka Tekhana'.

Abbot Point Operations (APO) celebrating 40 years of existence

Abbot Point Operations (APO) is celebrating four decades of safe and responsible operations at the North Queensland Export Terminal, Australia’s most northern deepwater export port. It was 26 February in 1984 when the Fukukawa Maru arrived at the Terminal, located north of Bowen in Queensland, to load 60,000 tonnes of coking coal from the

Collinsville mine, destined for Hong Kong.

Abbot Point Operations General Manager Port Operations Allan Brown said the milestone was a credit to the hundreds of local workers who had maintained the Terminal for more than a generation.

To celebrate, the 400-strong APO

team held a special morning tea, complete with themed cake, and gave out APO gift packs to train drivers and mariners visiting the Terminal.

“Our people are our business, and they are the foundation of 40 years of dedicated best practice in operating and maintaining this critical piece of national infrastructure,” Mr Brown said.

Ad Standards rejects activist claim against Bravus

Australia’s advertising regulator has rejected a vexatious complaint about Bravus’ website by anticoal activists and the taxpayersupported Environmental Defenders Office.

An Ad Standards Community Panel found Bravus’ website did not breach of the Australian Association of National Advertisers Code on the Bravus website. The complaint was brought by the Environmental Defenders Office on behalf of the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC).

This dismissal followed the Community Panel’s initial rejection of the complaint in December 2023, which the Environmental Defenders Office then appealed. There are no further avenues for appeal.

A Bravus spokesperson said the company was pleased the complaint had been dismissed as it was a misuse of process and taxpayers’ money by anti-coal activists waging green lawfare.

The Australian Government has allocated $8.2 million in funding

to the Environmental Defenders Office over the next four years, a significant boost from the $1.2m the activist group’s financial reports say it received from governments in FY 2023.

The Queensland Government has also provided three Community Sustainability Action grants totalling $564,000 to the Environmental Defenders Office a recently as November 2023.

“We stand by the statements on our website which provide a factual account of our business here in Australia and overseas, and we’re pleased Ad Standards has recognised this,” the spokesperson said.

“We are disappointed that the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) has wasted taxpayers’ money attacking our legal right to publicise our business.

“We note the recent Federal Court criticism that the EDO had engaged in ‘coaching’ Indigenous people and confecting evidence to manipulate a legal proceeding against another resources company.

“We also note that the ARRCC speaks for the individuals who are its members. These members do not speak for their faith groups more broadly.

“Unlike the anti-fossil fuel movement, we are forthright about having the conversation that the sustainable global energy mix requires both affordable and reliable baseload power and renewable energy for decades to come to ensure an equitable transition for developed and developing nations.

“Our Australian operations support this sustainable and affordable energy mix that is helping to lift global populations out of poverty, while prioritising local jobs and community benefits here at home. “We also have significant renewable energy operations here in Australia including the Rugby Run solar farm near Moranbah in central Queensland. This was rated by Rystad Energy as the best performing solar PV asset in the nation last year.

“From the production crew to the pilots, the tradespeople to the train drivers, and the engineers to the enviros, each member of our dedicated team has played a vital role in shaping the success story of the North Queensland Export Terminal.

“We’re proud of our role in helping transport high-quality Queensland metallurgical and thermal coal to the world where

it advances development and provides affordable and reliable energy that lifts people out of poverty.

“And as Bowen locals we are equally proud of our efforts to ‘Grow Local’ and provide jobs, training, and corporate giving that contribute to the economic and social fabric of our community.

“It’s been wonderful to come together as a team to celebrate this milestone, reflect on the journey so far, as well as chart a course for the next 40 years.”

APO, part of the Adani Group’s Australian businesses, manages world-class water monitoring, marine sediment, air quality, pests and weeds, and workplace safety programs at the Terminal. The business also partners with North Queensland Bulk Ports and First Nations traditional owner business, Juru Enterprises Limited, to deliver initiatives like the Collaborative Turtle Monitoring Program.

Today, under the BJP's rule, if an order is issued it is implemented everywhere from Kashmir to Kanyakumari," he said. The Union Minister termed construction of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya and abrogation of Article 370 as historic events.

"There is a transparent rule across the country under PM Modi's leadership," he said.

Stating that "Bharat will become a developed country under PM Modi's leadership", he appealed to people to give another chance to Narendra Modi (to become PM) and the BJP.

Ram temple to be completed by December

Ayodhya, Feb 25 (IANS) All ongoing construction work in the Ram temple will now be completed by December 2024.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has set this as the deadline for the completion of construction works at the Ram temple.

According to Anil Mishra, a Trust member, some projects inside the whole complex could take time and will be completed by the end of next year.

The Yogi Adityanath government has also set deadlines for all ongoing development projects in Ayodhya, outside the temple

complex.

The state and central governments are executing projects worth Rs 32,000 crore in the temple town.

The key projects in the pipeline are Shri Ram Kund, Karm Kshetra (for rituals), Hanuman Gadhi, Shri Ramlala Purakalik Darushan Mandal, Shri Kamm Keerti, Guru Vashishtha Peethika, Bhakti Teela, Tulsi (open theatre), Ram Darbar, Mata Kaushalya Vatsalya Mandap, Ramangan, Maharashi Valmik Archives Centre and Mata Sita Rasoi Annakshetra (kitchen).

When fully completed, the temple will be 161 feet high, 235 feet wide and 360 feet long.

“The Trust does not want to lose its momentum as far as the construction work is concerned,” said Mishra

Four Telangana men return home after spending 18 years in Dubai jail

Hyderabad, Feb 21 (IANS) After spending 18 years in a Dubai jail in a murder case, four of the five workers from Telangana have returned home.

Emotional scenes were witnessed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport as two workers hailing from Rajanna Sircilla district were received by their family members on Wednesday.

Shivarathri Mallesh and his brother Shivarathri Ravi turned emotional on seeing their near and dear ones and embraced them.

Dundugula Laxman had returned two months ago while Shivarathri Hanmanthu came back two days ago.

The fifth person Venkatesh is likely to be released from jail next month.

A Dubai court had sentenced five workers to 25 years in jail for killing Bahadur Singh, a watchman from Nepal.

The United Arab Emirates government had approved their mercy petition after an appeal by then state minister K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) during his visit to Dubai in September last year.

Deepika Bhan

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS) It has been a milestone decade for the BJP since 2014 with a literal turnaround in the perception of it being an upper-caste party to being most socially representative of all political formations in the country today.

Most parties are busy redeeming their religion and caste pledges, but the BJP is moving ahead on an agenda of inclusivity, focusing on winning over the marginalised sections of the society.

The BJP is clear about its agenda: appeal to the weaker communities by extending welfare schemes and giving due recognition to those historical figures who have been forgotten over the decades.

The party has also strategically brought alive remarkable personalities who were rooted in the hearts of millions of Indians, but somehow were fading away from public memory as a result of certain political prejudices.

KTR arranged flight tickets for the workers to return.

They were all lodged in Aweer Jail in Dubai. KTR, who is MLA from Sircilla, had personally visited Nepal in 2011 to meet the deceased’s family members to hand over Rs 15 lakhs as compensation or ‘Diyyah’ (blood money) as per Sharia Law.

Later, the victim’s family submitted the mercy petition documents to the UAE government. However, due to some reasons and the gravity of the crime, the UAE government didn’t approve the mercy petition.

KTR through the Indian Consul General in Dubai, the Arab lawyer who is handling the case, and other government officials kept enquiring about the status of the case.

During his previous visit to Dubai in September 2023, he requested the UAE government to approve the mercy petition considering that the five NRIs had already spent a long time in jail and also hold a good conduct certificate from the jail authorities.

The initiative to develop 'Panchteerth', commemorating five significant places connected to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, awarding the Bharat Ratna to Bihar's forgotten former Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, iconic Kisan leader and late PM, Chaudhary Charan Singh, veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani and legendary agriculture scientist M.S. Swaminathan, PM Modi-led government's aim has been to reach out to all.

PM Modi's repeated visits to places connected to revered figures such as Sant Ravi Das are significant as they connect with the sentiments of a huge population of Dalits.

The naming of Ayodhya

strides ahead with

airport as the 'Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham' pays homage to the sage who composed the epic Ramayana.

The BJP is clear in its agenda to make inroads into the marginalised sections and increase its presence among them.

The BJP's rising vote percentage all across the country in elections, from the panchayats and municipal bodies to state assemblies, to the Lok Sabha, is a result of the party's strategy.

It has become a major cause of worry for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's detractors, who have been trying hard to stir up caste feelings in their favour.

Last year, when the BJP won the Assembly elections in three big states, a sizeable percentage of OBCs and SCs/STs voted for the party. The results in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh came as a shock to the Congress and the rest of the opposition but it brought home the reality that the marginalised sections of the society have aligned with PM Modi's BJP. What appears today as progressive strategy for the BJP has its roots in the plans pursued with the ascendancy of PM Modi on the national stage.

At the core of the strategy are policies focusing on the uplift and development of SCs/STs and OBCs. The best step has been PM Modi taking it upon himself to facilitate a tighter embrace between the BJP and these marginalised sections.

Validating this argument are numbers that show how PM Modi's initiatives are helping maintain the BJP's cross-caste coalition and nation-first ideology.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, around 34 per cent of Dalits voted for the BJP, compared with 24 per cent in 2014. A similar change has also been seen in the OBC vote.

In the 2023 Assembly elections in four states, the constituencies reserved for SCs saw a swing in favour of the BJP.

Of the 98 of these reserved seats

in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana, the BJP won 57 and the Congress got 40. The Bahujan Samaj Party, whose primary base used to be the Dalits, performed miserably with an overall vote share of less than 4 per cent in each state.

The BJP's performance in the Reserved constituencies has seen a gradual rise and can only be termed as remarkable. Currently, 131 Lok Sabha seats are Reserved, of which 84 are for the Scheduled Castes and 47 for the Scheduled Tribes.

The BJP won 77 seats in 2019 elections and 67 in 2014. The Congress could win only 10 constituencies in 2019.

This is significant in view of the usual narrative being floated by the opposition that the BJP is primarily an upper-caste party. They seem to be unable to come to terms with the fact that a sizeable chunk of the BJP voters are now from the backward and marginalised castes.

Since 2014, a plethora of pro-poor schemes have been launched and the biggest beneficiaries have been the Dalits, OBCs and tribals.

The PM has himself said that "the biggest achievement of his government in the last ten years is to bring 25 crore people out of poverty".

The PM Modi government in the past decade has provided a range of schemes to the poorer sections, majority from the Dalit and other backward sections -- free ration, bank accounts, cooking gas, toilets, electricity, housing, water and direct cash transfers.

PM Modi, who himself is an OBC, has brought about a sea change in the BJP's reach among different communities and castes.

The opposition, Rahul Gandhi in particular, while trying to raise the caste pitch, seems to be ignoring the fact that results have repeatedly exhibited the mindset of the masses.

A growing number of people, especially the youth, want to rise above caste, community and religious divides, and PM Modi has touched a responsive chord with them.

Akhilesh joins Rahul’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Agra

Agra (UP), Feb 25 (IANS) In a display of unity among INDIA members, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, on Sunday, joined the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi in Agra. The SP President accepted the invitation to join the yatra after the seat-sharing deal between the SP and the Congress was finalised last week. Priyanka

Gandhi Vadra is also present in the yatra.

All the three addressed the crowd gathered in Agra as Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav joined hands to present a united front.

Akhilesh Yadav said, "In the coming days, the biggest challenge is to save democracy, and the Constitution, to fulfil the

dreams of Dr BR Ambedkar, that have been ruined by the BJP... BJP haatao, desh ko bachao." Akhilesh Yadav is one of the first Opposition leaders in Uttar Pradesh to join Rahul Gandhi’s yatra that will continue till March. Earlier last week, reaching out to Akhilesh Yadav, the Congress leadership had accepted the SP's 17-seat offer in Uttar Pradesh, ending all speculation of the alliance cracking up.

Indian national dies in flooding as severe weather batters Australia’s Queensland

Melbourne, Feb 16 (IANS) An Indian national has died in a flooding incident in Queensland as wild weather battered the region with severe rain and thunderstorms, the Indian High Commission in Canberra said on Friday.

Expressing condolences, the

Indian mission said that it is in touch with the family and providing all possible assistance.

"Heartbreaking tragedy in Australia: an Indian national lost her life in a flooding incident near Mount Isa, Queensland. Deepest condolence to the family of the deceased. Mission team is in touch for all necessary assistance," the Indian High Commission posted on X.

While further details are awaited, the victim's name was not revealed by the mission.

The local media reported that a

28-year-old woman was found dead inside a partially submerged car in floodwaters in Queensland on Friday.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology in the country has issued a severe thunderstorm alert for parts of southeast Queensland, which includes heavy rainfall warnings across Logan, Redland City and parts of Brisbane.

According to the most recent update by the bureau, a severe thunderstorm was likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash-flooding in some parts of the state.

Inflammatory protein potential key to treating severe asthma: Study

Canberra, Feb 26 (IANS)

Australian researchers have made a breakthrough in treating severe cases of asthma.

In a study published on Monday, researchers found that beta

common cytokines, a family of proinflammatory molecules, control inflammation and scarring of the airways in severe and steroid-resistant asthma cases, Xinhua news agency reported.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that the World Health Organization estimates affected 262 million people globally in 2019.

In Monday's study, which was led by a team from the University of South Australia (UniSA),

Eating ultra-processed food can make you prone to 32 diseases: Study

Sydney, Feb 29 (IANS) Regular consumption of ultra-processed foods may increase your risk of 32 diseases including cancer, heart and lung conditions, mental health disorders, and even early death, according to a large study. Ultra-processed foods, including packaged baked goods and snacks, fizzy drinks, sugary cereals, and ready-to-eat or heat products, undergo multiple industrial processes and often contain colours, emulsifiers, flavours, and other additives. These products also tend to be high in added sugar, fat, and/or salt, but are low in vitamins and fibre.

An international team of researchers from Australia, the US, France and Ireland found convincing evidence that higher ultra-processed food intake was associated with around a 50 per cent increased risk of cardiovascular disease-related death, a 48-53 per cent higher risk of anxiety and common mental disorders, and a 12 per cent greater risk of type 2 diabetes.

Published by The BMJ, the findings are based on an umbrella review (a high-level evidence

summary) of 45 distinct pooled meta-analyses from 14 review articles involving almost 10 million participants. None were funded by companies involved in the production of ultra-processed foods.

The team also found evidence that indicates higher ultra-processed food intake was associated with a 21 per cent greater risk of death from any cause, a 40-66 per cent increased risk of heart diseaserelated death, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and sleep problems, and a 22 per cent increased risk of depression.

"These findings support urgent mechanistic research and public health actions that seek to target and minimise ultra-processed food consumption for improved population health," said Melissa M Lane, associate research fellow at Deakin University, Australia.

Moreover, ultra-processed foods damage health and shorten life, said researchers in a linked editorial, calling for public policies and action on ultraprocessed foods.

"These include front-of-pack labels, restricting advertising and prohibiting sales in or near schools and hospitals, and fiscal and other measures that make unprocessed or minimally processed foods and freshly prepared meals as accessible and available as and cheaper than ultra-processed foods."

Australia to double naval warships, largest since World War II

Canberra, Feb 20 (IANS)

Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles and Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy on Tuesday announced the major overhaul in Navy and said the government is committed to more than doubling the size of the nation's naval warships. With the announcement,

Australia's fleet of combat-ready warships will be expanded from the current 11 to 26, Xinhua news agency reported.

The government will spend an additional $7.2 billion over the next decade to accelerate the delivery of the future fleet, which Marles and Conroy said will be Australia's largest since the end of World War II. The plan in total will boost the country's defence spend in the early 2030s to 2.4 per cent of GDP, compared to the 2.1 per cent it was planned to be when the government came to office, said reports

researchers wrote that they believe a human therapeutic antibody called trabikihart could be the key to effectively blocking the inflammation and scarring.

Damon Tumes, the joint leader of the study and head of the Allergy and Cancer Immunology Laboratory at UniSA, said in a media release that current treatments are limited because they only target single molecules when several cells and pathways are responsible for asthma.

Netanyahu for stepping up attacks in Rafah even as truce talks underway

Tel Aviv, Feb 26 (IANS) Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that a military operation in Rafah was necessary to ensure victory in the ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza strip.

Speaking to Hebrew media on Sunday night, PM Netanyahu said that once the Israel Army begins the Rafah operation, the war would be completed in a few weeks with full victory.

The Israel Prime Minister said, “We won't give up.”

He also said that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have destroyed 18 of the 24 battalions of the Hamas

terror force, but added that four of the remaining battalions were concentrated in Rafah. He said that these battalions have to be taken care of to ensure total victory and to wrap up the war as soon as possible.

The statement of the Israel Prime Minister has come just as hectic mediatory talks for a temporary ceasefire and release of Israeli hostages were taking place at the behest of the US, Qatar and Egypt.

Meanwhile, the IDF presented to the War Cabinet its plan to both evacuate Palestinian civilians from Rafah and to militarily destroy some of the last Hamas battalions in the area of Gaza near the Egyptian border.

The Israel Prime Minister's office in a statement said, “The Israel war cabinet has approved a plan late Sunday night to provide humanitarian assistance to the

Gaza Strip in a manner that will prevent the looting that has occurred in the northern Strip and other areas,”

It may be noted that there are over 1.3 million Palestinians in the Rafah area, many of whom fled to this area to escape the IDF bombing in the north of Gaza. The US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed that Israel, Egypt and Qatar had come to an understanding in Paris about the “basic contours of a hostage deal for a temporary ceasefire”.

Speaking to the International media, Sullivan said, “There will now be indirect discussions by Qatar and Egypt with Hamas because ultimately they will have to agree to release the hostages. That work is underway. And we hope that in the coming days, we can drive to a point where there is a firm and final agreement.”

UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi set to address triple planetary crisis

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS) In the backdrop of 2023 being the warmest year on record, with resultant heatwaves, storms and droughts causing havoc, heads of state and more than 5,000 representatives and leaders will gather in Nairobi in Kenya from Monday for the five-day sixth UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) to strengthen multilateral effort to address the planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

The Assembly, which usually meets biennially and sees visionaries from the business sector, governments, scientific institutions, and civil society, is the world's top decision-making body on matters related to the environment and includes all 193 UN member states.

Observers told IANS that there are 20 draft resolutions and two decisions on the table, among them a resolution on the metals and minerals issue.

"UNEA-VI will place particular focus on how stronger multilateralism can help us to do this," said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen earlier this month.

"It will drive united, inclusive and multilateral action that addresses every strand of the triple planetary crisis as one indivisible challenge."

In the run-up to the UNEA, aptly called "world's parliament on the environment," ministers and partners of the UNEP-convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition

(CCAC) launched a Clean Air Flagship effort to provide a platform to boost regional coordination and private sector engagement, data-led policy action, financing, science and advocacy.

UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis will deliver his address at the opening of the high-level segment that will be held on February 29 and March 1.

The segment will consist of an opening plenary with statements by key dignitaries, national statements; three leadership dialogues, a multi-stakeholder dialogue, and a closing plenary meeting during which UNEA will take action on the draft Ministerial declaration as well as the draft resolutions and decisions.

India will be represented by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change's Additional Secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar.

Government leaders plan to use the Assembly to renew calls for progress on the sustainable development goals, a global blueprint for protecting the planet and promoting prosperity.

Just 15 per cent of the goals, which come due in 2030, are on track.

"We must find practical ways to advance the human rights to a healthy environment, which is crucial for sustainable development," said Leila Benali, Morocco's energy transition minister and the President of UNEA-VI.

"We know that when we protect the natural world, public health improves. When we focus on sustainable solutions to the climate crisis, our economies get stronger."

25 killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza City

Gaza, Feb 26 (IANS) At least 25 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks in the Gaza City on Sunday, medical sources and eyewitnesses said.

Fifteen people, including children, were killed and several others were wounded after warplanes hit a residential building in the Zaytoun neighbourhood of Gaza City, Xinhua news agency reported, citing medical sources.

According to local sources and

eyewitnesses, the warplanes fired a missile at the three-story house without prior warning.

According to Israel's stateowned Kan TV news, the Israeli army has been conducting operations in the neighbourhood since February 20, targeting infrastructures belonging to the Hamas movement.

On the same day, 10 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the coastal road west of the Gaza City.

Local sources and eyewitnesses reported that Israeli forces launched artillery shells and conducted airstrikes targeting individuals waiting for aid trucks, killing 10 of them and injuring others.

Hindu vote becomes a factor in US elections

Also on the agenda of the Assembly will be ways to tackle the dramatic increase of wasteful and fuel-intensive plastics, which is feeding the climate crisis.

More than 99 per cent of plastic is made from chemicals sourced from fossil fuels, the substances responsible for 86 per cent of C02 emissions in the last decade.

Plastic pollution reinforces the need for a binding plastics treaty as well as a fossil fuel treaty that can tackle the root cause of both the plastics pollution crisis and the climate crisis through phasing out oil, gas and coal production.

In 2022, the Assembly ended with countries agreeing to launch negotiations on a legally binding global instrument to end plastic pollution.

That was one in a recent string of ambitious international agreements on environment.

Last September, countries and businesses inked a landmark pact to prevent pollution from chemicals and waste.

Two months later, at the UN Climate Change Conference, countries vowed for the first time to transition away from the fossil fuels that are superheating the earth and driving climate change.

Researchers find that if no action is taken, annual plastic production will rise 22 per cent between 2024 and 2050, and plastic pollution will jump 62 per cent between 2024 and 2050. By continuing with business as usual, the world would generate enough litter between 2010 and 2050 to cover the entire island of Manhattan with a 3.5-km-tall heap of plastic -- nearly 10 times the height of the Empire State Building.

Antani, a Republican running for US Congress, is aggressively projecting his Hindu faith.

Bhavini Patel, a Democrat running for Congress, is battling allegations of courting Hindu nationalist donors. And Indiandescent donors are pressing the Biden-Harris campaign for a "Hindu page" in its 2024 campaign manifesto.

The "Hindu Vote" appears to have become a factor in US politics. There is no rock solid count of Hindus in the US because the US Census does not record religious affiliation in its surveys. But there are several estimates.

Pew Research Center said 0.7 per cent of Americans were Hindu in 2015 and that their number is projected to grow to 4.8 million by 2050. Harvard Divinity School estimated their number to be 2.5 million in 2018. And some Hindu Americans put the number generously at 5 million, which, they concede, includes Sikhs and Jains.

As crucial as their number is US politics, so is their ability to write big donation checks.

Niraj Antani, an Ohio state lawmaker who is running in the Republican primary for a congressional seat, has frequently described himself as Hindu and

posted this message on X, to mark the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya: “As the 1st Hindu American State Senator in Ohio history, today it was my privilege to do Darshan to Lord Ram at @BAPS Cincinnati Mandir to mark the opening of his Mandir in Ayodhya. As we celebrate this occasion, let us stand for religious freedom around the world. Jai Shri Ram!"

His pinned post on X is an endorsement from the Hindu American PAC.

Bhavini Patel, a Democrat who is seeking to unseat the incumbent Democrat in a congressional race in Pennsylvania, is being attacked by her opponent for courting Hindu nationalist donors, as also for her unstinting support for Israel.

A fundraising call she hosted with Mihi Meghani, a co-founder of the Hindu American Foundation was being cited as proof of her courting Hindu groups.

Meghani is also the chair of the Hindu American PACs whose endorsement is a pinned post on Antani’s X feed.

The Patel campaign has denied these allegations.

The back and forth only demonstrates the growing presence of a Hindu vote in US politics.

"There was always a Hindu vote, which was not recognised publicly," said Ramesh Kapur, a longtime Democratic donor and strategist.

"But it is being recognised now, and has come to the fore in the context of the 2024 elections."

A bunch of donors are also pressing the Biden-Harris reelection campaign to include a “Hindu Page” in its manifesto, whenever it is announced.

MDP leader denies India backed his appointment as party president

Male, Feb 26 (IANS) Maldives' main opposition leader Abdulla Shahid has denied allegations that India backed his recent appointment as the president of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), a media report said.

The accusations by several government officials came after the 61-year-old leader was named to the new role without an election last week, the Sun Online news outlet reported on Monday.

"The people currently running the government use India as their goto excuse to invalidate anything I attempt to achieve," Shahid, who served as President of the 76th UN General Assembly between 2021

and 2022, told the news website.

"At this point they may go as far as to claim my birth was influenced by India. This is the extent of their narrative right now," he added.

Asserting that the present government should realise his potential and give credit to his political achievements to date, the veteran politician clarified that he is "not a political insert by any other party or power".

Shahid's comments come just after he debunked President Mohamed Muizzu's claims about "thousands of Indian military personnel" as 'lies', adding that there "are no armed foreign soldiers stationed in the country".

In a post shared on X yesterday, he wrote: "100 days in, it's clear: President Muizzu's claims of 'thousands of Indian military personnel' were just another in a string of lies. The current administration's inability to provide specific numbers speaks volumes. There are no armed

foreign soldiers stationed in the country. Transparency matters and the truth must prevail".

The seasoned diplomat told the Sun Online in an interview that regardless of foreign policy changes, Maldives cannot distance itself from India as a regional ally.

"[India] is tied to us historically, culturally, and in several other ways," he said, adding that India was among the first of its allies to assist in the 2004 tsunami crisis and the 2020 pandemic.

Widely seen as a pro-China leader, Muizzu, after winning the country's presidential election in November 2023, promised to remove Indian troops from the island nation.

Earlier this month, he said the first group of Indian military personnel will be sent back before March 10, while the remaining will be withdrawn by May 10.

31,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion: Zelensky

Kiev, Feb 26 (IANS) Around 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia's full-scale invasion began two years ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

The Ukrainian President said at a news conference on Sunday that he is providing the updated death

toll in response to the inflated figures that Russia has quoted.

"31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in this war. Not 300,000 or 150,000, or whatever (Vladimir) Putin and his lying circle are saying. But each of these losses is a great loss for us," Zelensky was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The Ukrainian President said he would not give the number of wounded as that would help Russian military planning. Speaking about the wider losses in the war, the Ukrainian President said that tens of thousands of civilians had died in the areas of

Ukraine occupied by Russia but the true number was unknown.

"I don't know how many of them died, how many were killed, how many were murdered, tortured, how many were deported," he was quoted as saying by the British news broadcaster.

Zelensky’s tally differs sharply from estimates by US officials, who, in August last year, put the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed at 70,000.

In terms of Russian losses, he said that around 180,000 Russian soldiers have been killed and tens of thousands more injured.

Palestinian death toll in Gaza nears 30,000: Ministry

Gaza, Feb 29 (IANS) The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 29,954 as the Israeli military killed 76 in the past 24 hours, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said. Meanwhile, 110 others were wounded, bringing the total

number of Palestinian injuries since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in early October to 70,325, the Ministry said on Wednesday in a statement.

It noted that some victims remain under the rubble amid heavy bombardment and a lack of civil defence and ambulance crews, Xinhua news agency reported.

On Wednesday, Israeli media outlets reported that two officers were killed and seven soldiers were injured during battles in the Gaza Strip, pushing the death toll to 582.

Citing IDF sources, the reports said Israel's ground operations continued throughout the Gaza Strip under the support of air and naval bombardment.

Indian Consulate ‘strongly’ raises Jaahnavi Kandula’s case with US authorities

Seattle, Feb 24 (IANS) The Indian consulate in Seattle said that it has "strongly" raised the issue of Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula's killing in the US with the city police and the case is now being referred to Seattle City Attorney's office for review.

The move comes after the King's County Prosecutor's Office said on Wednesday that they will not be pressing charges against Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave, who ran over and killed Kandula, last year due to "lack of sufficient evidence".

In a statement posted on X on Friday, the Indian Consulate said that they are awaiting the "completion of Seattle Police's administrative investigation and will continue to monitor progress in the case".

"We have also raised the matter strongly with local authorities, including Seattle Police for appropriate redress. The case has now been referred to Seattle City Attorney's office for review," the Consulate said.

In addition, the Consulate said that it is in "regular touch with the designated family representatives and will continue to extend all possible support in ensuring justice for Jaahnavi and her family".

Kandula, a student of the Northeastern University in South Lake Union, died after she was hit by a Seattle Police vehicle driven by officer Kevin Dave at a pedestrian crossing on the night of January 23 last year.

Dave, who was responding to a "high priority" call that day at 8 pm, had reportedly chirped his siren, but did not have it running consistently, as he plowed into Kandula.

"After staffing this case with senior deputy prosecuting attorneys and office leadership, I have determined that we lack sufficient evidence under Washington State law to prove a criminal case beyond a reasonable doubt," the King County Prosecuting Attorney said in its statement on Wednesday. Attorney Leesa Manion, however, noted, "Kandula’s death is heartbreaking and impacted communities in King County and across the world."

Meanwhile, the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), a US-based Hindu advocacy group, said on Friday that it is "shocking" and "disheartening" to see that the investigation into the killing of Kandula is dismissed with no charges against those who struck her.

"It is shocking and disheartening to see the investigation into the killing of #JaahnaviKandula be dismissed with no charges against those who struck her. Where is #justice for the family of this young international student, run over in a #Seattle sidewalk by a police car?" CoHNA said in a post on X.

Kandula was thrown 100 feet when she was struck by the speeding police patrol vehicle and died on the spot.

"I f–ked up," Dave was heard saying after the accident at the intersection where he accelerated up to 74 miles per hour at one point, much higher than the prescribed limits of 25 and 20 mph respectively.

destroyed tunnels and other Hamas infrastructure, eliminating "terrorist cells" and seizing large quantities of weapons.

In addition, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman Daniel Hagari said that the goal of the war in Gaza, which is to ensure the October 7 attack never ever happens again, will take time to achieve.

Israel has pushed forward a largescale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 200 were taken hostage.

India’s vision and current geopolitical landscape

India's External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, offers a compelling perspective on India's evolving role in the global arena and its vision for the future. In a recent interview to a leading German economic daily, Handelsblatt, during his visit for the Munich Security Conference recently, Jaishankar delved into the essence of India's identity, its foreign policy principles, and the changing dynamics of global power structures.

The term "Bharat," which Jaishankar emphasizes, encapsulates India's essence beyond its geopolitical boundaries. It signifies authenticity, rootedness, confidence, and resilience.

For India, reclaiming the term Bharat represents a reaffirmation of its cultural and historical identity, guiding its approach to foreign policy based on self-perception and national interests rather than external pressures.

Jaishankar's assertion that the "unipolar moment" is over underscores a significant shift in global dynamics. He emphasizes the return to a more equitable distribution of power, challenging the dominance of Western institutions and practices that emerged from a historical experience of colonialism. As emerging powers like China and India regain prominence, Jaishankar suggests a return to a more natural order where diverse cultural and economic centers reclaim their influence on the global stage.

In navigating this multipolar world, Jaishankar advocates for smart diplomacy that offers choices and demands choices.

Unlike the rigid blocs of the Cold War era, today's world presents opportunities for independent decision-making and collaboration based on shared interests rather than ideological alignment. India's commitment to pluralism and democracy shapes its foreign policy approach, fostering partnerships with like-minded nations while recognizing the importance of national interests and strategic autonomy.

Jaishankar's emphasis on nationalism may raise eyebrows in Western contexts where the term carries historical baggage. However, in India's context, nationalism reflects a commitment to sovereignty, self-reliance, and the legacy of freedom fighters who fought against colonial oppression. It signifies a pride in India's diverse cultural heritage and the resilience of its people in the face of historical challenges. India's foreign policy choices, including its stance on alliances

and economic partnerships, reflect a nuanced understanding of its historical experiences and aspirations for the future.

While India remains open to cooperation and engagement with global partners, it prioritizes its national interests and strategic autonomy, wary of subordinating itself to external alliances that may constrain its decisionmaking.

In the current geopolitical landscape marked by shifting power dynamics and evolving global challenges, India's vision under Jaishankar's leadership offers a pragmatic and principled approach to international relations. By embracing its cultural heritage, asserting its national interests, and engaging with the world on its terms, India seeks to shape a more equitable, inclusive, and multipolar world order. As India navigates its path forward, its vision resonates as a reflection of its rich history, diverse identity, and aspirations for a more prosperous and peaceful world. Earlier, at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) Jaishankar engaged in high-level discussions during the recent conference, the significance of such forums in addressing global challenges became more apparent than ever.

Jaishankar's meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina underscored the importance of bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh. Their dialogue marked a milestone moment, considering Hasina's recent reelection for a fifth term. It highlighted the commitment of both nations to strengthen regional cooperation and foster mutual prosperity.

Furthermore, Jaishankar's discussions with WHO DirectorGeneral Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shed light on the critical importance of preparedness for pandemics and the role of traditional medicine in healthcare systems. Such exchanges reflect the proactive approach of nations in addressing not only immediate threats but also long-term health challenges.

The MSC, now in its fourth decade, has evolved into a vital platform for global security policymakers. With over 350 senior officials from 70+ countries convening annually, the conference provides a neutral environment for robust debates on pressing security threats and challenges. Since its establishment in 1963, the MSC has witnessed significant transformations reflective of the changing geopolitical landscape. From discussions primarily centered around the Cold War era to broader dialogues encompassing global security concerns, the conference has adapted to address evolving security paradigms.

UNEA-6: Charting a course for environmental resilience

The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is a sign of international commitment to environmental governance and sustainable development. Since its founding in 2012, UNEA has become an important forum for solving environmental problems and promoting international cooperation.

UNEA was established after the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, which represented a turning point in the evolution of global environmental management. Rooted in the Rio Declaration and Agenda 21, UNEA agreed to be a platform to act on long-term development needs making it actionable plans.

UNEA addresses many environmental problems urgently and decisively, from combating climate change to protecting biodiversity and combating pollution. Meeting every two years, it brings together representatives from government, civil society, academia and the private sector to promote dialogue, cooperation and agreement on important global issues.

What sets UNEA apart is its commitment to integration and transparency. The UN Environment Assembly provides a platform for diverse voices and perspectives, ensuring that the environmental agenda reflects the needs and aspirations of all countries and stakeholders. Through dialogue and dialogue, the United Nations Environment Assembly bridges differences and promotes the environment towards environmental goals.

Over the years, UNEA has catalyzed landmark initiatives and agreements that have reshaped the global environmental landscape. From negotiating the Paris Agreement to adopting the Sustainable Development Goals, UNEA has been at the forefront of international efforts to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. Yet, the significance of UNEA extends beyond formal resolutions and declarations. It serves as a catalyst for action at the national, regional, and local levels, inspiring governments, businesses, and communities to embrace sustainability and environmental responsibility.

By raising awareness, building capacity, and mobilizing resources, UNEA empowers stakeholders to drive positive change in their respective spheres of influence.

As the world confronts unprecedented environmental threats, the role of UNEA has never been more critical. Climate

change, biodiversity loss, and pollution pose existential risks to ecosystems, economies, and societies worldwide. In the face of these challenges, UNEA offers a beacon of hope—a platform for dialogue, innovation, and action in pursuit of a sustainable and resilient future.

Furthermore, UNEA encapsulates the principles of multilateralism and solidarity crucial for addressing global environmental challenges. In an ever-more interconnected world, environmental concerns surpass national borders and require collective action and cooperation. UNEA epitomizes the ethos of collaboration and partnership necessary to protect our planet for generations to come.

The sixth session of (UNEA-6) has convened in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together over 7,000 delegates from 182 countries. Against the backdrop of escalating climate change, biodiversity loss, and pervasive pollution, the Assembly serves as a crucial platform for global environmental stewardship and cooperation.

Established in 2012 following the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, UNEA embodies a paradigm shift in multilateralism, elevating environmental concerns to the forefront of global discourse alongside issues of peace, security, and health. Over the years, it has emerged as a catalyst for transformative action, spearheading resolutions on critical topics like combating wildlife trafficking and promoting sustainable urban mobility. One of the landmark initiatives underway at UNEA-6 is the negotiation of the first-ever legally binding international instrument to combat plastic pollution, the United Nations Environment Assembly, slated for completion by the end of 2024. This underscores a collective commitment to address the scourge of plastic waste that plagues our oceans and ecosystems.

At the heart of UNEA-6 lies a recognition of the interconnectedness of environmental challenges and the urgent need for coordinated action. The Assembly's central theme revolves around leveraging multilateral environmental agreements to tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Amidst the socio-economic upheavals triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating geopolitical tensions, the past two years have witnessed significant strides in environmental cooperation. From the recognition of the

universal human right to a clean environment to the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, nations have embraced ambitious commitments to safeguard our planet's ecological integrity.

UNEA-6 is poised to celebrate these victories while reaffirming the need for sustained momentum in fulfilling existing commitments. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, has outlined six priority areas for UNEA-6, including water scarcity, responsible mining, and climate-altering technologies. These priorities underscore the imperative of collective action to address pressing environmental challenges.

Crucial to the success of UNEA-6 are the negotiations surrounding proposed resolutions and the ministerial declaration, which will shape the Assembly's agenda and priorities. With 20 resolutions and 2 decisions on the table, delegates must navigate complex negotiations to identify common challenges and chart a course for collective action.

Consensus-building lies at the heart of UNEA's decisionmaking process, underscoring the importance of dialogue and compromise among member states. As delegations engage in intensive negotiations, the world looks to UNEA-6 to deliver actionable outcomes that pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.

UNEP's commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond the conference hall, with measures in place to offset travel emissions and reduce the environmental footprint of the Assembly. These efforts underscore a broader commitment to environmental sustainability and responsibility.

As UNEA-6 unfolds, the world's attention is focused on the outcomes that will emerge from this landmark gathering. The decisions made in Nairobi will reverberate far beyond the conference hall, shaping the trajectory of global environmental governance and laying the foundation for a more harmonious relationship between humanity and nature.

In the face of mounting environmental challenges, UNEA-6 offers a beacon of hope—a testament to the power of collective action and international cooperation in safeguarding our planet for generations to come.

The United Nations Environment Assembly symbolizes the strength of global collaboration and unity in tackling the pivotal challenges of our era. As we endeavour to construct a more environmentally friendly, sustainable future, let us take motivation from the heritage of UNEA and intensify our endeavours to safeguard and conserve the planet for future generations.

The Third Eye: Intelligence is a prime security weapon

masters ‘liked to hear’.

Thirdly, the IB’s communications with the government are not only confidential but are marked as ‘unofficial’ notes meant only for the benefit of the recipients and not available for scrutiny by an outsider.

Intelligence Bureau (IB), the ‘mother’ organisation that fostered the family of Intelligence entities including SSB, ARC and R&AW, traced its origins in the Central CID established by the British some 135 years ago and the fact that it saw an essential continuity of its functioning after Independence, is an affirmation of its belief that by and large its goal had been to safeguard the country against the doings of its perceived ‘adversaries’ at any point of time.

IB’s charter multiplied a great deal with the emergence of India as a sovereign nation and as the largest democracy that happened also to inherit the destabilising legacy of a religionbased Partition accompanying its freedom.

The Bureau derives strength from three basic principles of its working.

First is the freedom it exercises in the matter of covering an activity or an entity that - in its ‘own judgement’ - amounted to a threat to national security.

Secondly, the government at the Centre can task the IB which is only appropriate but it never influences its findings - IB may be the only reliable agency to tell the government what is adverse in the public environment disproving the notions that Intelligence only reported what the political

Working of India’s Intelligence agencies is in line with the principle that they are not police organisations.

The IB is led by IPS officers who join the organisation giving up on the ‘glamour’ of uniform and accepting ‘anonymity’ by choice in lieu of the rare satisfaction they had of directly working for the national cause - with full confidence that good work was always given credit for and with a belief that the nation acknowledged the contribution of Intelligence as a prime weapon of security.

IB officers had no ‘investigation’ powers - they only used special tradecraft techniques to access the information of Intelligence value such as ‘confidential enquiry’, ‘secret watch’ and ‘interview under cover’.

It is a demand of professional ethics for the IB that any of its officers examining a suspect in the custody of police in a security-related case must have that interaction video recorded so that it can be further studied later for its Intelligence output and also kept free of any suspicion of use of force. The information of Intelligence value accruing from it would be shared with the investigative authority which may develop it into ‘evidence’Intelligence it may be noted is not the same thing as ‘evidence’.

The IB works in close liaison with the state police through nodal officers assigned by the latter

since it is necessary to reduce the gap between ‘information’ and ‘action’ - the Bureau provides information and the police, as part of the government’s executive machinery, acts on it. Officials of Intelligence agencies have no personal or political vested interest - they are used to serving the government of the day regardless of its political affiliation.

The support extended by the Modi government to the nation’s security set-up has to be lauded in this context.

India as an emerging global power has to take good care of its security and economic concerns - in that order - and that is why in the Modi regime, the National Security Advisor is rightly steering India’s international relations in a major way.

In a fast-changing geopolitical scenario that is causing the world to drift towards a new Cold War with the US-led West being on one side and the axis of China and Russia on the other, security issues were of prime importance for a country like India.

Today, Intelligence about developments happening outside has become extremely important for safeguarding internal security because there is a ‘cause and effect’ relationship between external and internal threatsparticularly in the Indian context.

With the rise of terrorism and the threat of covert operations of the two main adversariesPakistan and China - against India, the counter-effort of our own Intelligence agencies has expanded a great deal and so has the need for them to work in closer liaison with the Police at various levels.

Intelligence agencies are today helping policymakers with solution-finding - going beyond a mere sharing of information on the threats.

Intelligence classically is information about dangers to national security, that was presented in a manner that the solutions would suggest themselves.

The hallmark of the IB is that it is one source of reliable information - and perhaps the only one - for the powers that be on whatever

was happening in the countryfavourable or unfavourable - that needed to be taken note of.

The government always felt at ease about something brought to its notice by a trustworthy agency like the IB on any adverse fallout of a policy - for it could at least enable the former to take corrective action on it if required.

Prime Minister Modi’s government understood the importance of keeping security above politics - the boost that national security has received in return can be described as the defining moment of this regime.

The Information Technology revolution that transformed the system of communication by creating instant connectivity across geographical frontiers, has produced new challenges for Intelligence agencies for the reason that social media - a gift of the digital world - became also an instrument of combat.

The adversary could use it for establishing ‘sleeper cells’ of terrorists, recruiting ‘lone wolves’ and turning it into a weapon for running ‘Influence Warfare’. Since state-of-the-art Intelligence technologies may not be made easily available to us even by our strategic partners, it is necessary for India to develop its own systems - the National Technology Research Organisation (NTRO) is already engaged in this.

Cyber security issues are extremely important today because breaching ‘protected’ information communicated or stored in cyberspace is on top of the adversary’s agenda.

The advent of Generative Artificial Intelligence has multiplied the threat to the security of strategic systems, sensitive establishments and generally to the economic lifelines of the nation.

Promise and perils of AI are under the close examination of India with Prime Minister Modi putting this issue on the agenda of the G20 Summit held under India’s Presidency and following it up by holding a world conference on AI where among other things, the need for international regulations for AI operations was also debated. The regime of Prime Minister Modi is right on top so far as

Intelligence-based handling of threats to national security is concerned.

In the global scene developing around us, India as a nation has to stand on its own to effectively deal with adverse situations and threats.

It is a matter of great satisfaction that India has rapidly advanced towards becoming self-reliant in the area of defence and security.

As the eyes and ears of the state, Intelligence agencies have newer responsibilities of helping the country to become safer and more prosperous.

National security is inseparable from ‘economic security’ and this is the logic why the charter of Intelligence today has expanded a great deal to uncover any enemy operations designed to attack the country’s assets, supply chains and the economic lifeline.

The exchange of information between main Intelligence agencies and those collecting economic Intelligence or looking into economic offences of a certain kind has acquired added importance.

There is awareness of these new dimensions of national security and inter-agency coordination accordingly is constantly improving under the present National Security Advisor who is from an Intelligence background himself.

Intelligence agencies have to have subject and area specialists but the latter had to be thoroughly groomed into the tradecraft of Intelligence. There are tougher yardsticks applied now to ‘analysis’ for Intelligence production.

Governance, security and economic growth are an integral part of a functioning democracy and there is a need for ‘mainstreaming’ the cause of national security and national interests by launching projects to enhance people’s awareness about them in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution that specifically defines Fundamental Duties too-beyond the Rights.

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS)

Continuing with his endeavours to further cement India's relations with its diaspora, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to meet the small but significant Indian community in the Republic of Korea as he begins his first visit to Seoul on March 5.

While one is well aware of the Korea-based Indian actor Anupam Tripathi who became a household name after 'Squid Games', the nation is home to around 15,000 Indians with many

professionals contributing to the country's IT, shipping, and automobile sectors.

Some other notable Indian names in the country include Aria, originally named Gauthami, a member of a global K-pop girl group called X:IN.

The visit of EAM Jaishankar, who has always thanked and praised the diaspora while calling them ambassadors of India, comes at a time when a significant number of Indians are choosing the nation as a study-abroad destination.

According to recent MEA estimates, more than 1,300 Indian students are studying in South Korea and a large number of them are pursuing post-graduate and Ph.D programmes, mostly in pure sciences.

With popular education destinations like the UK and Canada tightening immigration rules, many Indian students are considering Korea owing to its quality education, affordable tuition fees, and the cost of living.

For instance, a Korean D-2

Student Visa permits working up to 20 hours per week and after graduation, students can apply for a D-10 visa and start looking for jobs. In September last year, Minister Lim Sang Woo (Deputy Head of Mission), Embassy of the Republic of Korea, said Korea is keen on more students, researchers, and highly skilled workers, and aims to attract 3,00,000 international students by 2027. The two countries were also exploring a new migration agreement last year to ensure

easier mobility for professionals of the two countries across a range of areas including technology and automobiles.

With EAM Jaishankar co-chairing the 10th India - Republic of Korea Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart Cho Tae-yul, it is likely that these issues will come up for discussion.

The meeting is expected to comprehensively review the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation and explore avenues for further strengthening it.

India headed to be $35 trillion economy by 2047: Piyush Goyal

Bitcoin market cap scales $1 trillion

New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal on Monday said that the government’s ambition is to expand the current $3.7 trillion Indian economy to a $30-35 trillion fully developed economy

by 2047 and to ensure food and energy security of the nation. Addressing a media delegation of 35 journalists from 19 countries of Latin American and the Caribbean, Goyal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s holistic vision to address issues regarding the welfare of the poor coupled with good governance over the last decade has helped India transform from the 11th largest to 5th largest economy in the world.

“The country is on track to become the 3rd largest economy by 2027,” he said.

He hailed PM Modi’s relentless pursuit of twin tracks - strengthening the macroeconomic fundamentals of India to prepare the country for the future and focus on the welfare of the poor pertaining to food, healthcare and education. The minister said that India has witnessed the best performing decade in the last 75 years of Independence with inflation being halved in the past 12 years that has benefited the economy with interest rates in control.

India can become 3rd largest economy in 4-5 years but increasing per capita income also important: Rangarajan

Chennai, Feb 20 (IANS) India can become the third-largest economy in the world in four or five years but increasing the per capita income and elimination of poverty is also important, noted economist and former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Dr C. Rangarajan said.

Rangarajan, the current Chairman of the Madras School of Economics, said India can grow to become the third-largest economy in the world quickly as the secular growth of developed economies will be slow.

"They have reached a stage where their growth will be slow," he added.

Rangarajan said how India eliminates poverty and increases the per capita income are also

important. He said the per capita income of Indians has to grow by about five times to reach the per capita income of those in the developed economies.

On India overtaking the UK to become the fifth-largest economy in the world, he said that India and the UK cannot be compared as their sizes are vastly different.

According to him, in the next four/five years, India may become the third largest economy but the goals should be different.

Rangarajan was responding to the media questions after launching the five-year Fellow Programme in Management (FMP) of business school Great Lakes Institute of Management.

Launching the FMP, he said higher educational institutions should increase their stock of knowledge apart from disseminating knowledge and that is where research comes into picture.

Rangarajan recalled that it was he who had fathered the Fellow programme at the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad

several years ago. He also cautioned about the problems in such research programmes like the number of students will be low and the courses cannot be taught in a normal manner.

He also suggested that the Great Lakes Institute to introduce the research programme on all the disciplines and not just to the marketing stream.

Agreeing with the distinguished economist, Dr.Suresh

Ramanathan, Dean and Principal, Great Lakes Institute, said the role of building a knowledge base also falls on the shoulders of the academia.

He said what the industry now practices globally emanated from the researchers in the educational institutions.

"Putting India on the global research map is important. We are proud to launch a programme that is truly benchmarked to global standards and will draw upon a network of highly accomplished scholars globally which will lead to highly impactful research,” Ramanathan added.

India home to 247 mn entrepreneurial households driving $8.8 trillion transaction value

Mumbai, Feb 21 (IANS) India is home to at least 247 million entrepreneurial households who will be the drivers of India's next economic wave, driving an $8.8 trillion transaction value in FY23, a new report showed on Wednesday.

These entrepreneurial households will be drivers of the next economic wave in India and

their core transaction value (CTV) is set to grow 12.7 per cent (year-on-year) to $95.2 trillion by FY43, according to the report by Enmasse, an international network of people and organisations, and management consulting firm Praxis Global Alliance.

The report unveils a key new metric -- core transaction value -- which shows an enormous market, poised for growth, that remains undercapitalised. Such entrepreneurial households are characterised by multiple diversified sources of income and turn these income and curated borrowings into a transactionintense portfolio of high-priority goods and services, and business spends.

The research into core transaction value and

the identification of 247 million entrepreneurial households reveals a vibrant economic segment poised for transformative growth,” said Jyotsna Krishnan, Managing Partner at Elevar Equity and Cofounder of Enmasse.

The report also showed that brands focusing on entrepreneurial households have showcased attractive returns on capital employed (ROCE), which is comparable with the Nifty50 in FY23.

"The $8.8 trillion core transaction value we uncovered is not just a number; it's a testament to the untapped potential and vibrant economic activity of these households," said Madhur Singal, Managing Partner and CEO at Praxis Global Alliance.

London, Feb 20 (IANS) The value of the world’s most popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, has more than tripled to $52,000 since November 2022.

The year 2022 was marked by the high-profile implosion of crypto exchange FTX, which triggered liquidity crises at several smaller crypto firms, CNN reported.

Following bitcoin’s gains in 2023, investors have returned in droves in recent weeks, pushing the asset’s market capitalisation above $1 trillion for the first time since its 2021 heyday, based on data from CoinMarketCap, the report said.

In contrast to traditional currencies, the supply of Bitcoin

is limited and is expected to peak in 2140, according to the price-tracking website for cryptocurrencies.

Money flows into Bitcoin have been boosted by the recent launch of exchange-traded funds that invest directly in the cryptocurrency and which have made it easier for retail investors to put money into the asset. The value of bitcoin has risen nearly 13 per cent since January 10, when US regulators gave the green light to investment firms wishing to offer such funds, CNN reported.

Bitcoin remains far from its alltime high of $69,000, reached in November 2021, but industry players expect it to keep climbing this year and that peak may be surpassed, CNN reported.

Part of the bullishness is down to Bitcoin’s upcoming “halving” -- a feature of its design that automatically halves the rate of new coins entering circulation, an event taking place roughly every four years.

PM Modi 3.0 to further bolster $300 bn electronics manufacturing goal: Industry body

New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) The industry and the government are working to scale electronics manufacturing in India towards meeting the $300 billion goal in the next few years and Prime Minister Narendra Modi 3.0 will cement this vision in the next five years, the nation’s apex industry body of mobile and electronics industry ICEA told IANS on Thursday.

The government’s strategy to reach the $300 billion level in production of electronics from the current level of about $75 billion is built on broadening and deepening electronics manufacturing in the country.

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA, said that emerging industries like cells, printed circuit boards (PCBs), display and semiconductors etc will also develop strong foundations in the next few years.

“Together, the industry and the government are working on a well-settled vision of scaling electronics manufacturing, including more than $100 billion of mobile phones. Modi 3.0 will cement this vision and achieve it sooner rather than later,” he said. India has become the secondlargest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world (in volume terms).

India’s poverty level has fallen below 5%: NITI Aayog CEO

New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) The latest household consumer expenditure survey indicates that India's poverty level has fallen below 5 per cent and people are becoming more prosperous both in the rural and urban areas, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam said on Sunday. The per capita monthly household expenditure more than doubled in 2022-23 as compared to 2011-12 reflecting the rising level of prosperity in the country, according to data released by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) late on Saturday. "The consumer expenditure survey also reflects the success of the poverty alleviation measures taken by the government," Subrahmanyam told journalists.

He said that the survey, grouped the population into 20 different categories and the data showed that the average per capita monthly expenditure for all categories stood at Rs 3,773 in rural areas and Rs 6,459 in urban areas. The average per capita monthly expenditure of the bottom 0-5 per cent class is pegged at Rs 1,373 in rural areas and Rs 2,001 in urban areas.

"If we take the poverty line and inflate it with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to today's rate, we see that the average consumption of the lowest 0-5 per cent class, is about the same. This means that poverty in the country is only in the 0-5 per cent group," the NITI Aayog CEO said.

WPL 2024: Want to create another pool of 20-25 players for the Indian team, says Amol Muzumdar

Bengaluru, Feb 28 (IANS) Amol Muzumdar, head coach of the India women's cricket team, sees the ongoing 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) as an opportunity to create a pool of players for the national team, including from a fast-bowling perspective.

“In the series against Australia and England, we fielded 22 players, owing to all three formats of the game being played. I would try to want another pool of 20-25 players to create a bench strength for the Indian team.

"I would also intend to create a pool of fast-bowlers from the WPL, as India fielded four fast bowlers in the last series against Australia and England. It makes a lot of difference if you strengthen the bowling attack with an ample pool of pacers and spinners," said Muzumdar on the Hindi commentary feed of Tuesday’s game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

While talking about his vision for strengthening fielding and fitness of the national team, Muzumdar also lauded Kerala’s batting allrounder Sajana Sajeevan, who won Mumbai Indians the opening

game of WPL 2024 with a six on the last ball of the game to get a four-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals.

"Sajana Sajeevan's last-ball six in the opening match gives you an idea of the depth in Indian cricket, either men’s or women’s cricket. It was made clear in the first meeting to every player that fitness and fielding are the two things which are non-negotiable for me, even before the start of the two series and WPL as well.”

“To be at the top of these two aspects, a lot of hard work will be put in and every player is working hard for it. Plus, it’s not like just talks are happening, the thought has been seen in the WPL when the players are trying to put in the effort to become better fielders."

Muzumdar was also happy over seeing half-centuries from the batters like Meghana Sabbhineni, Richa Ghosh and Shafali Verma.

"There is an upscale improvement in India's batters, like Meghana scored 50+ in her first WPL game (for RCB), as well as Richa Ghosh and Shafali Verma making half-centuries respectively. The confidence in their batting is on display after coming from how they performed in those two series against England and Australia." He also thinks these are exciting times for women’s cricket in the country, seen from 23,000-plus people coming to watch Tuesday’s game in Bengaluru. “These are absolutely exciting times for women’s cricket in India. You can see the Chinnaswamy stadium being fully packed, which clearly tells you where women’s cricket is headed in the country.”

Sachin invites the world to ‘come and experience Jammu & Kashmir’

New Delhi, Feb 29 (IANS) Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who visited Kashmir with his wife Anjali and daughter Sara, shared a mesmerising video from his vacation, inviting the world to 'come and experience' the beauty of one of the 'several jewels of India'.

Taking to Instagram, Tendulkar shared a video, that summarises his entire trip, and wrote "Top moments from my Kashmir trip," at the beginning of the video and ended with a text, "Kashmir was so beautiful it spun my head around."

The video captures every moment from his trip; from temple visits,

WPL 2024: Renuka has controlled the powerplay and set the tone for RCB in both games, says Sophie Molineux

Bengaluru, Feb 28 (IANS) Leftarm spin all-rounder Sophie Molineux, who took three wickets in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s eight-wicket win over Gujarat Giants in WPL 2024, believes India fast-bowler Renuka Thakur had set the tone for the side’s wins in both their matches so far via controlling the run-flow in the power-play.

In WPL 2023, Renuka had a forgettable time by picking just one wicket at an economy of 9.54 in six matches for RCB. But in the ongoing season, Renuka had

stepped up to be a pace-bowling mainstay, seen from her new-ball spell of 2-14 and sending Gujarat into a setback from which they could never recover, earning her the Player of the Match award. "Yeah, Renuka has been incredible in both games and playing against her for India, she's just so reliable and it's great to be on the same team as her. She swings the ball beautifully at the front and I think she's really set the tone for us in both games.

"To be able to control the powerplay is a big thing in T20 cricket and she's done that twice now and I can see her continuing to do that," said Sophie in the post-match press conference. Last season, RCB lost their first five matches in WPL 2023 and eventually missed the bus for the knockouts. But this time, they have won their first two games and are seated at the top of the table. If they started off with spin in the tight two-run win over UP

Warriorz, then they had no issues in beginning with pace to rattle Gujarat.

Under new head coach Luke Williams, role clarity and adaptability with the ball has been a major catalyst in RCB maintaining a clean slate in the tournament so far. "I feel like in T20 cricket as a bowler, you need to be really clear on what your strengths are, what you can bring to the team." "Luke and all the staff have been very clear with each bowler and what their roles are gonna be and also at the same time, be willing to adapt like we did today. We had a completely different look to our powerplay where we were pace-heavy. So, that's all about T20 cricket especially, just be clear on your own individual plans where they fit with the team and be able to change on the fly." RCB’s next match in WPL 2024 will be against the Delhi Capitals on Thursday evening at their home ground, M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

interactions with Kashmir willow bat manufacturers, stops at local tea shops to enjoying snowfall, meeting with armless wrestler Amir Hussain Lone and more.

"Jammu and Kashmir will remain a beautiful experience etched in my memory. There was snow all around but we felt warm because of people’s exceptional hospitality.

"Hon’ble Prime Minister @ narendramodi ji said there is so much to see in our nation. Couldn’t agree more, especially after this trip," he wrote in the caption.

Tendulkar specifically commended bats crafted from Kashmir willow, calling it a great example of 'Make in India'. He had visited the MJ cricket bat manufacture factory in the Chersoo area of Awantipora in Anantnag district. The factory is owned by two brothers -Manzoor Ahmad and Javaid Ahmad, who belong to the Chersoo area.

‘Naughty Boy’ GSLV rocket now smart, disciplined & mature: ISRO

Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), Feb 17 (IANS)

The successful orbiting of India's third generation weather satellite INSAT-3DS in a copybook style on Saturday has enhanced the confidence about the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket for the next prestigious launch, said officials of Indian space agency.

The GSLV rocket (formerly GSLV-MkII) had earned the nickname 'naughty boy' during its initial days for its inconsistent performance.

"The confidence on the GSLV rocket is now high," S. Somanath, Chairman, Indian Space Research

Organisation (ISRO) said.

He said the next space mission for the GSLV rocket will be the launch of Indo-US collaboration earth observation satellite NASA-ISRO

Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR).

On Saturday, the 'naughty boy' came to a lot of praise from the ISRO officials starting from Somanath.

S.Unnikrishnan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) said the 'naughty boy' has now become smart and everything pertaining to the mission went off smoothly.

"The naughty boy has matured and has become a disciplined boy now. The rocket had injected the satellite in its intended orbit, said Tomy Joseph," Mission Director of GSLV-F4/INSAT-3DS.

Joseph also said the rocket had carried 50 kg more weight than what was carried in the earlier

mission.

According to the Satellite Director, Imteyaz Ahmad, the four metre diametre heat shield is important as it enables to build bigger satellites.

V.Narayanan, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre said the payload capacity of the rocket has been increased from about 1,500 kg first to 2,274 kg now – the weight of the INSAT-3DS satellite.

According to M. Sankaran, Director, U R Rao Satellite Centre, INSAT-3DS life span has now extended by three months -- mission design life 10 years -owing to the orbit achieved.

A. Rajarajan, Director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre said the launch campaign went off without any hitch and the centre is gearing up for the next rocket launch.

Al can be catalyst for India to create cuttingedge enterprise: Google’s Sanjay Gupta

Mumbai, Feb 18

India on Sunday said there is immense potential with the surge of AI for a country as vast as India as AI can be the catalyst that turns the advantage into actual cutting-edge enterprise for the entrepreneurs.

At the inaugural edition of ‘Mumbai Tech Week', Sanjay Gupta, Country Head & VP, Google India, said that the resurgent ambition of India, on the world stage as well as socially, “provides just the right temperature for India to embrace

this technology and create examples for the world.”

“As Google, it's definitely a future that we’re committed to building together with India,” Gupta told the gathering.

Generative AI has caught the popular imagination in the last one year.

“But its tremendous capabilities are far greater than what the popular discourse has been about. AI, today, has the potential to translate content into hundreds of languages in a short time. English need no longer be the internet’s primary language,” said Gupta.

It can turn text to video in seconds, surmounting the challenge of literacy.

Google running ‘racist, anti-civilisational programming’ with its AI: Musk

New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have accused Google of running "racist, anti-civilisational programming" with its artificial intelligence (AI) models.

This comes after Google paused the ability for Gemini AI to generate images of people, as controversy erupted over

inaccuracies in AI-generated historical images.

"I’m glad that Google overplayed their hand with their AI image generation, as it made their insane racist, anti-civilisational programming clear to all," Musk wrote on X. The controversy erupted when images generated by Gemini AI

Consuming over 22 per cent protein daily may clog your arteries: Study

New York, Feb 20 (IANS) While eating protein is essential for good health, US researchers have discovered a molecular mechanism by which excessive dietary protein could increase atherosclerosis risk.

Atherosclerosis is the build-up of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls.

The study, which combined small human trials with experiments in mice and cells in a Petri dish, showed that consuming over 22 per cent of dietary calories from protein can lead to increased activation of immune cells that play a role in atherosclerotic plaque formation, driving the disease risk.

Furthermore, the scientists showed that one amino acid -- leucine -- seems to have a disproportionate role in driving the pathological pathways linked to atherosclerosis, or stiff, hardened arteries.

"Our study shows that dialing up your protein intake in pursuit of better metabolic health is not a panacea. You could be doing real damage to your arteries," said Babak Razani, Professor of cardiology at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

"Our hope is that this research

starts a conversation about ways of modifying diets in a precise manner that can influence body function at a molecular level and dampen disease risks," Razani added.

The findings are published in the journal Nature Metabolism. Previous studies have also shown that overreliance on protein may not be such a good thing for longterm health.

Following their 2020 research, in which Razani's laboratory first showed that excess dietary protein increases atherosclerosis risk in mice, his next study in collaboration with Bettina Mittendorfer, a metabolism expert at the University of Missouri, Columbia, delved deeper into the potential mechanism and its relevance to the human body.

"We have shown in our mechanistic studies that amino acids, which are really the building blocks of the protein, can trigger disease through specific signaling mechanisms and then also alter the metabolism of these cells," Mittendorfer said.

"For instance, small immune cells in the vasculature called macrophages can trigger the development of atherosclerosis."

Based on initial experiments in healthy human subjects to determine the timeline of immune cell activation following ingestion of protein-enriched meals, the researchers simulated similar conditions in mice and in human macrophages, immune cells that are shown to be particularly sensitive to amino acids derived from protein.

Their work showed that consuming more than 22 per cent of daily dietary calories through protein can negatively affect macrophages that are responsible for clearing out cellular debris, leading to the accumulation of a "graveyard" of those cells inside the vessel walls and worsening of atherosclerotic plaques overtime. Interestingly, the analysis of circulating amino acids showed that leucine -- an amino acid enriched in animal-derived foods like beef, eggs and milk -- is primarily responsible for abnormal macrophage activation and atherosclerosis risk, suggesting a potential avenue for further research on personalised diet modification, or "precision nutrition."

The findings are particularly relevant in hospital settings, where nutritionists often recommend protein-rich foods for the sickest patients to preserve muscle mass and strength.

"Perhaps blindly increasing protein load is wrong," Razani said. "Instead, it's important to look at the diet as a whole and suggest balanced meals that won't inadvertently exacerbate cardiovascular conditions, especially in people at risk of heart disease and vessel disorders."

Razani also notes that these findings suggest differences in leucine levels between diets enriched in plant and animal protein might explain the differences in their effect on cardiovascular and metabolic health.

How the world lost Rituraj Singh: Know how pancreatitis can be fatal for the heart

Mumbai, Feb 20 (IANS) TV actor

Rituraj Singh passed away at the age of the 59 on Tuesday, after a cardiac arrest following a bout of pancreatic disease.

The actor known for his vast roles was suffering from pancreatic disease and was hospitalised.

While he was discharged, his health condition deteriorated on Monday night, and suffered a heart attack.

"Pancreatic diseases, which include pancreatic inflammation

or swelling, which is referred to as pancreatitis or pancreatic malignancies or cancers, have increased exponentially during current times. We come across many high profile cases who are suffering from pancreatic problems and such disorders can lead to mortality or death over a variable duration," Dr. Piyush Gupta, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Endoscopy, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, told IANS.

Pancreatitis is the redness and swelling (inflammation) of the pancreas. This happens when digestive juices or enzymes attack the pancreas. The pancreas lies behind your stomach on the left side of your belly. It is close to the first part of your small intestine (the duodenum).

Studies have shown that regardless of the severity of acute pancreatitis, it can be associated with myocardial injury.

Use of anabolic steroids can raise heart disease risk: Study

London, Feb 17 (IANS) People who use anabolic steroids, that mimic testosterone's effects in the human body, may increase underlying risk of a heart condition called atrial fibrillation, a new study has found.

The new research, published in the Journal of Physiology, found that male sex hormones, such as testosterone, also called androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS), are misused for muscle building particularly among young men. This can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation in individuals genetically predisposed to heart diseases.

"Our study can significantly contribute to understanding the impact on the heart health of young men who misuse anabolic steroids to increase muscle mass," said lead author Dr Laura Sommerfeld, postdoctoral researcher from the University of Birmingham, UK.

"Recent reports have shown that young men in particular are being targeted on social media such as TikTok being sold testosterone products, but we have shown how the misuse of steroids carries a specific risk that many people will not be aware of," she added.

The scientists examined potential effects on a condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), which is genetically determined and primarily attributed to disruptions in the formation of cell connections critical for heart muscle stability.

"Heart muscle diseases like ARVC affect young, athletic individuals and can lead to life-threatening heart rhythm disturbances. Atrial fibrillation is a common condition in the general population. Elevated testosterone levels can result in an earlier onset of these diseases," said Professor Larissa Fabritz, from the varsity.

The scientists initially confirmed, based on clinical patient data, that ARVC occurs more frequently and severely in men than in women.

In laboratory experiments, they discovered that six weeks of AAS intake, combined with impaired cell connections, could lead to reduced sodium channel function in heart tissue and a slowing of signal conduction within the atria.

Delhi’s poor air quality spikes respiratory, cardiac problems: Doctors

"Basically any disease which is severe, can cause changes in the electrolytes and it can also affect the heart because of putting a lot of strain, and if there is any underlying heart problem, the person gets into trouble," Dr Ashwani Mehta, Senior cardiologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told IANS.

"Whenever there is acute pancreatitis, usually people die either have heart failure or because of the kidney," he added. The doctors said alcohol, smoking, obesity, gallstones and ready drugs and toxins have been accused to cause pancreatic disorders and such risk factors are on a rise in our current society. Obesity, smoking and alcohol have also been linked to cardiac disorders and hence there is an indirect link between pancreatic and heart diseases. Early and timely diagnosis of stones in gallbladder, quitting alcohol can help prevent the condition, Dr. Ashwani said.

New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS) Even as the national Capital’s air quality continues to dip, doctors on Thursday reported a rise in respiratory and cardiac issues.

As per data by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) showed no sign of improvement as it was recorded at 294 on Thursday at 9 am. The AQI was 341 on Wednesday and 342 a day earlier.

“We have noticed a significant increase in the number of patients seeking medical attention for various health issues, ranging from respiratory problems to cardiac conditions. Many individuals are experiencing worsened symptoms of respiratory ailments such as asthma, persistent cough, colds, and viral infections, including cases of H1N1,” Dr. Sushila Kataria, Senior Director, Internal Medicine, Medanta, Gurugram, told IANS.

“The primary contributing

factor to these health issues is the presence of smog, which directly irritates the lungs and throat, particularly affecting those with pre-existing respiratory conditions,” she explained.

A recent analysis done by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) showed that Delhi was ranked first on the list of the country's most polluted cities in January.

Of the 254 cities, Delhi's pollution levels were recorded at the highest with the average PM2.5 concentration at 206 micrograms per cubic metre.

The city exceeded the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) every day of the month.

“In the face of escalating air pollution, especially evident in cities like Delhi, the impact on respiratory health, is significant.

People suffering from asthma as well as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease) -- both chronic respiratory ailments -- experience considerable aggravation due to air pollutants, resulting in symptoms like shortness of breath and exacerbations. Therefore taking precautionary measures becomes paramount,” said Dr Anshum Aneja Arora, a Gurgugram-based pulmonologist.

Delhi to host Italian abstractionist Francesca Amalia Grimaldi’s latest paintings

Renowned Italian painter Francesca Amalia Grimaldi will exhibit her latest set of works in the national capital on February 23, sharing her take on the identities and ruminations as a woman artist in a contemporary urban world

Renowned Italian painter Francesca Amalia Grimaldi will exhibit her latest set of works in the national capital on February 23, sharing her take on the identities and ruminations as a woman artist in a contemporary urban world.

The four-day exhibition (February 24-27) titled ‘Metamorphosis’ at LTC, Bikaner House features Francesca’s reflections on India, following her year-long stay in the country.

Uma Nair is the curator of the event organised by Delhi-based Masha Art.

Florence-based Francesca is a trained geologist whose paintings have been on public display for three-and-a-half decades now. The upcoming show will feature a series of abstract studies created in the mould of modern intensities and expression. The paintings and collages, a total of 32, are done in mixed media and acrylic-on-canvas pastels.

The show will be inaugurated on February 23 evening (Friday, 6 p.m.) by the Italian Ambassador in India Vincenzo De Luca and art historian and author Aman Nath, founder of Neemrana Hotels.

Francesca, a landscapist-turnedabstractionist, formally studied the Classics and has a degree in geological sciences, from which she draws her deep passion for the history of art while also finding inspiration from nature.

Having created ripples in her native country, she will now showcase what she created between 2020 and 2024, after living in India for a year now and appreciating its cultural fabric.

The artist recalls her initial artistic creations were deeply influenced by works with a predominantly figurative character.

Her love for landscape painting often stems from a desire to capture the essence of a place and

the beauty that surrounds us.

“Landscape painting allows me to express their deep connection with the environment and convey their emotional responses to the natural world,” she says.

Curator Uma Nair notes that the paintings in Metamorphosis abandon figurative themes and focus on the new frontiers of the abstract.

These works let the shapes, lines and colour dominate in a bid to reach the manifestation of internal emotions, she notes.

“This is done by making use of a language characterised by a contracted drawing synthesis and a great chromatic value,” the curator adds about Francesca, whose works can be found in private collections in Italy and abroad.

To famed Italian critics, Francesca’s works on the subject of the world and her inner rumination, as she faces life in all its many shades and shadows of travels and life’s leanings.

‘Metamorphosis’, though, deviates from her course with its abstract studies created in the mould of modern intensities and expression.

The paintings in the exhibition are those of deepened depths of abstract tenor and an understanding of atmospherics beginning with a Goan landscape, an abstract study titled ‘Under the Sea’ and a diptych named 'For War’.

Artist Sanjay Bhattacharya’s ‘Moving Geometry’ Premieres at Jehangir Art Gallery

Best known for his portraits of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his realistic portrayal of Kolkata, veteran artist Sanjay Bhattacharya embarks on a new journey with 'Moving Geometry,' his geometric abstractions set to enchant Mumbai this March.

His latest exhibition titled 'Moving Geometry,' scheduled to run from March 5 to 11th at the iconic Jehangir Art Gallery in Kala Ghoda is being presented by Gallerie Nvyā.

This exhibition marks Bhattacharya's return to Mumbai for a solo showcase after his last exhibition seven years earlier in 2015.

Originally from West Bengal and currently based out of New Delhi, this 66-year-old artist’s latest exhibition is a clear departure

from his earlier realistic artworks.

It will feature a collection of 14 meticulously crafted oil on canvas paintings, each representing a culmination of two years of work.

Bhattacharya first garnered recognition way back in 1982 with an exhibition titled ‘Husain and Ten Painters’. Since then, his journey has been marked by significant milestones, including accolades for his watercolours in Kolkata, and an exploration that led to the creation of his signature geometric abstractions.

An ode to Indian visual culture and history: Alka Pande’s new collection of 14 books

Art historian and curator Dr. Alka Pande has written a set of 14 collectable books titled “108 Portraits of Indian Culture and Heritage” that puts the spotlight on 14 disciplines ranging from art, architecture, objects, crafts, and more. The immersive collection set is an encyclopedic work looking at the development and history of Indian visual culture through various eras of history to the contemporary world.

reflects on how her childhood impressions and exposure have been pivotal in introducing her to the rich and myriad cultures of India. She reminiscences about her first brush with 'Kumhaars' (potters) at her maternal grandmother’s house in Meerut in the ‘108 Portraits of Indian Crafts’ book which soon delves deeper into the beauty of glazed pottery of the Indus Valley Civilisation and eventually takes readers through the craftsmanship of varied Indian states.

Oxford University in London, and the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mauritius, alongside collections in many hotels and celebrity homes.

Bhattacharya's latest showcase delves into the intricate interplay of geometric forms.

Talking about his process, he shares, "The day I realised all our emotions take a geometric pattern, I decided to work on this concept. These patterns arrived on my canvas initially in 2006 and have been a recurring motif in my subsequent series."

He believes that geometric shapes are not only evident in the external world but also within our emotions, signifying the intrinsic connection between nature and human experience.

He adds: “When we are tense, our thought process takes the shape of a triangle, when we become nostalgic, it goes around and around becoming a circle, and when we concentrate it turns to little circles or dots.”

Complete with anecdotal personal stories, the author has employed the lens of Indian art and aesthetics to unpack the rich cultural history of the country’s illuminating art, architecture, and cultural landscape. The subject of each book unfolds in a visual and textual story of 108 narratives. Since the number 108 is of immense significance in Indian art and it also emerges from the Upanishadic tradition of Indian philosophy, it has emerged as a connecting thread among the set of books through which images and histories of the subject engage with each other.

The set of books features historical, cultural, and visual exploration of subjects ranging from Objects, Dance, Food, Architecture, Printmaking, Crafts, and Music to Photography, Sculpture, Design, Traditional Art, Textiles, Modern & Contemporary Art, and Vernacular & Indigenous Art. Each book begins with a personal story by the author who

In the book ‘108 Portraits of Indian Objects’, the author delves into the designs of utilitarian objects and examines how they are both functional and pieces of aesthetic art. The ubiquitous pot or lota is a recurring motif in this book.

The cultural significance of food in the form of prasad, customs, or rituals is documented in ‘108

The timeless importance of early skin care for ageless beauty

In a world obsessed with the latest beauty trends and fads, it's easy to lose sight of the fundamental principles that truly contribute to ageless beauty.

While innovative products and procedures may grab headlines, the importance of early skin care remains key. As witnessed through many accounts, there is a pressing need to understand the crucial role that collagen, glutathione, and a holistic lifestyle have to play in preserving youthful radiance. Through the factors provided below, there is growing optimism that we can cultivate good skin care habits contributing to natural beauty that defies the passage of time.

Collagen Helps Rewind the Clock

On Your Skin

Collagen can truly do wonders for your skin, with the special ingredient acting as the scaffolding that gives your skin its structure and bounce. This essential protein, which depletes naturally as we age, is integral when we think about the hallmarks of youthfulness – plumpness, elasticity, and a luminous glow. When you choose to incorporate collagen through powder or any other form, into your routine, it helps replenish these vital reserves, diminishing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots that tend to emerge in our 20s and 30s. Moreover, the benefits of collagen

end up going beyond superficial improvements. Studies have shown that it can also improve hydration, enhance skin elasticity, and even boost hair and nail health.

Glutathione Builder Enhances

Your Skin's Ultimate Defense

As collagen production slows down after the age of 20, your skin becomes more susceptible to damage from free radicals and environmental stressors. Thankfully, there is a master antioxidant known as glutathione, which has a huge part to play. It acts like a shield, protecting our cells from oxidative stress and promoting overall skin health. Fortunately, advancements in skincare have made it easier than ever to boost glutathione levels naturally. Products like Glutathione Builder harness the power of plant-based ingredients to elevate glutathione production within the body, leading to a reduction in pigmentation, improved elasticity, and a radiant, youthful complexion.

Investing in Long-Term Health:

When you think about the longterm health of your skin, it is important to understand why early skin care cannot be taken lightly. It is truly an investment in long-term skin health and vitality. By starting early and establishing a proactive regimen that incorporates collagen and

Skincare for children

Selecting the right personal care products for kids is an important aspect of parenting. With so much buzz around skincare and routine for kids parents are becoming more anxious in their selection process. Eventually the anxiety results in decisions that can negatively impact kids' wellbeing.

Let’s explore some common mistakes parents make when

glutathione supplements, you can lay the groundwork for a future where your skin glows with confidence, regardless of your age. However, you must know that skincare alone is not enough. Cultivating healthy lifestyle habits is equally important for optimal skin health. Adequate hydration, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management all play a vital role in supporting our skin's natural repair and regeneration processes. These practices work synergistically with supplements like collagen and glutathione to amplify their efficacy and unveil a complexion that radiates health and youthfulness.

Cultivating Radiant Skin

Through Everyday Choices:

While collagen and glutathione supplements, along with innovative products like Collagen Builder, offer support, lasting skin health hinges more on daily lifestyle choices than on bottled solutions. Prioritizing hydration, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management lay the foundation for vibrant skin. These habits synergize with external care, unveiling a complexion that defies trends and mirrors inner well-being. Ditching quick fixes for a holistic lifestyle investment is crucial. In an era dominated by synthetic ingredients and invasive procedures, Collagen Builder stands out as a natural alternative. Harnessing SesZenBioTM and CollabZenTM, it revitalizes skin, fights UV damage, and boosts collagen production. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants from lemons, acerola cherries, oranges, strawberries, and pomegranates, Collagen Builder nourishes skin internally, promoting a radiant complexion that blends science with nature.

parabens, and phthalates are often found in many products marketed to children. For instance, many shampoos contain sulphates, which can irritate skin, and parabens, which can disrupt the endocrine system. Parents must prioritize products with natural, hypoallergenic ingredients to avoid these problems. By taking this preventive measure, potentially hazardous chemicals are kept away from children's sensitive skin.
