PRIDE OF THE IRISH MARCHES IN IRELAND

VOLUME 54 ISSUE 1

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

As Cathedral sends the Class of 2023 off into the next phase of their lives that includes change, new friends, new places, and new experiences, the constancy of what Cathedral does year after year remains much the same. Our educators have been preparing for months now to welcome a new class: the Class of 2027. With the same excitement that they sent off the Class of 2023, they will welcome to campus for the next school year four grades of students with a student body that is just under 1,200. The amount of planning that goes into educating the hearts and minds of these students is truly awe-inspiring.

Cathedral's educators are some of the most committed people I have ever met. They care about the wellbeing of their students and work hard to create a God-centered, loving, caring, stimulating, and healthy environment for them. Every day brings new joys, challenges, accomplishments, and ways to improve. In that spirit, if you see a Cathedral educator in the near future, please thank them for their service and dedication to Cathedral.

We are not a perfect institution but a school that cares. We steadfastly put our trust in God, and with His guidance, Cathedral continues to build on its 105-year foundation in its commitment to excellence.

The Board of Directors and its finance committee have worked diligently to ensure Cathedral is on solid financial footing. We are truly blessed to have a finance committee and an internal accounting team that are forward-focused and fiscally responsible. Under their leadership and the Board's, Cathedral is in a place where it can start to address some issues that have long been needed. Our beautiful campus is finally able to receive some much-needed capital improvements: a new roof, drainage and parking lot improvements, tennis court improvements, and theatre chiller issue resolutions, to name a few. Additional long-term

financial planning is also a focus of our Board as we continue to manage Cathedral's Foundation; endowment; spiritual, arts, athletic, and academic needs; and educator development and benefit needs.

Over a decade ago, Cathedral reaffiliated with the Brothers of Holy Cross, and this relationship has continued to grow and flourish. Cathedral recently hosted a Sponsorship Visit from the Provincial Council for the Midwest Province of the Brothers of Holy Cross. The primary purpose of the visit was to ensure Cathedral maintains the essential Holy Cross character as a Catholic college preparatory school and that all facets of the school reflect the charism of the Congregation of Holy Cross and its mission and founder, Basil Moreau. The Provincial Council accepted the Sponsorship Visit report and congratulated Cathedral and its leadership for “the exceptional Holy Cross ministry that is brought to life every day. [Cathedral's] commitment to all Holy Cross values is evident to every constituency and in every facet of the school." We are humbled by these compliments and are inspired to do even more.

This year, Cathedral was the school selected by the Congregation of Holy Cross to begin receiving an influx of Holy Cross priests and brothers on campus. Father Jomy, our current Holy Cross priest, will be joined by Father Geoffrey Mooney and Brother Matthew Rehagen this summer. These young, religious men are graduates of The University of Notre Dame's ACE program and are highly regarded men of faith and esteemed teachers. Cathedral is very excited to have this renewed religious educator relationship with the Congregation and to welcome Father Geoffrey and Brother Matthew to campus.

Please continue keeping Cathedral, its educators, and Board in your prayers. As we guide our school and its students toward a meaningful relationship with God, we greatly appreciate your kindness, thoughts, support, and prayers.

God Bless You and Your Family,

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I've heard it said, and it could've been my father who told me this: if you do what you say and say what you do, you build trust in people, just as we trust in God. I've tried to live by that mantra, and as President of Cathedral High School, I have worked diligently to build trust and hope. I want to share a couple of examples of that and a glimpse of our hope for the future.

Six years ago, we were planning an Innovation Center, which ended up changing location and some of its purpose, and in the first week of the COVID shutdown, we began construction. Now, our Innovation Center, along with its beautiful dining hall and Mary area, is a bright and favorite spot on campus. We said we would do it, and we did. About two years ago, we said we should build a coffee shop in the Student Life Center to be run by our Entrepreneurship and Three Sectors classes to serve the caffeine needs of our community. Thanks once again to generous donors and good planning, Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse is up and running, and according to my son, who was in one of the classes, we are very close to breaking even on its operations.

By doing what we say and completing these projects, we have hopefully built up a good bit of trust in our community as we move on to our next goals—our All Out Irish Day of Giving highlighted the first phase of our next set of projects, a health and wellness center in our old cafeteria, an innovation art studio and performance space to be built adjacent to our current space, and a new soccer and lacrosse field to be constructed at our own beautiful Brunette Park. With the current economic environment (you all know about the inflation we're facing), it takes courage and prudent planning to embark on these projects. But we also know that our students

need new and innovative spaces to continue meeting the demands of a constantly changing world. And thanks to the generosity of donors, I'm glad to report that we are making good progress on the funding goals for each project.

I'm sure you will continue hearing about how you can support our students and their activities in health and wellness, theatre and performance, and soccer and lacrosse. Our donors like seeing the direct impact of their generosity. If you are so moved, please scan the QR code to learn how you can contribute to our latest efforts to empower greatness.

I hope that in the near future, you will be able to visit our beautiful campus and see the fruits of this current work. With the 2022-23 school year in the books, I want to thank you again for your prayers, most importantly, and for whatever other support you can share with us. The school has a tremendous past and a bright future, and I'm glad you are a part of it. May the peace of the Lord be with you.

In the Hope and Joy of Holy Cross,

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As I reflect on the 2022-23 school year, I am filled with pride. Our students enjoyed incredible experiences, from marching in Dublin, Ireland's St. Patrick's Day Parade, to exploring Broadway during J-Term, to learning about farm life on an educator's farm.

These experiences were possible because innovative, hard-working educators helped make them possible. Several J-Term internships have led to job opportunities, and the J-Term excursions made a lifelong impact. Giovanni Saavedra-Rios '23 says he is thankful he could participate in the marine biology J-Term in Key Largo, Florida.

"Attending the Marine Lab Camp in Key Largo, Florida was an incredibly impactful experience for me," he says. "Not only did I learn about the diverse marine life and the ocean's delicate ecosystem, but I also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of conservation and protecting our planet. The hands-on activities and opportunities to interact with marine life in their natural habitat were truly unforgettable."

As wonderful as many of our student trips were in 202223, what our phenomenal educators do day in and day out most impresses me, and I am incredibly grateful. From meeting with students during office hours and

after school, to leading junior and senior class retreats, Cathedral teachers are dedicated to educating their students' hearts and minds. Cathedral educators are joyful, engaged, and zealous, and I am proud of all that they do.

While I'm hoping our classroom educators take a little time to rest this summer, I know they will be taking advantage of professional development opportunities, coaching teams, running camps at Camp Cathedral, or, in the case of educator Anthony Ernst, running the entire Camp!

The Hill never sleeps, not even in the summer, but in every project and every initiative, our mission and living out our Holy Cross core values are the focus.

As fabulous as 2022-23 was, greatness calls us to be even better in 2023-24.

Enjoy your summer, and I hope to see many of you next year on the Hill.

CATHEDRAL GRADUATES ROCK THE RUINS

About 10 years ago, Cathedral friends Eric Tobias '94 and Scott Kraege '93 attended a concert and began discussing how cool it would be to own their own concert venue one day. Fast forward to 2019, when Kraege discovered The Vogue was up for sale. The two friends purchased the popular Broad Ripple nightclub, excited to see their dream become a reality.

A year later came the nightmare of COVID-19. Like so many experiences, live music was silenced. Tobias and Kraege, however, were not about to give up on their dream.

"We knew people wanted to enjoy live music again, but they weren't comfortable indoors," Tobias says. "So, we reached out to Holliday Park and pitched them the idea of offering live music there. Our first Rock the Ruins was in 2021, and it was a huge success."

Rock the Ruins is a summer concert series presented by The Vogue and hosted at Holliday Park in Indianapolis. Last summer's acts included Counting Crows, LeAnn Rimes, and Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers.

"Roughly 35,000 fans enjoyed last year's concert series, and we're looking forward to another great summer in 2023," Tobias says.

Of course, it takes a lot of work to set up the stage, take tickets, and take down the stage for each concert. Tobias and Kraege are fortunate to have about 35 to 40 current and former Cathedral students working for them, proving that lifelong connections are alive and well.

"There's something special about the Cathedral experience that's hard to put into words," says Tobias. "Cathedral people always look out for each other, allowing connection to happen."

Proceeds from the Rock the Ruins series support Holliday Park and its Foundation.

HONORING CATHEDRAL ALUMNI JOHN MCCORMICK '90

Johnny Mac's CoffeehouseThe Perfect Blend

The only thing better than a fresh cup of hot coffee in the morning is the blessing of a beautiful coffeehouse dedicated to a humble, giving, and kind Cathedral graduate. Family and friends of John McCormick '90 gathered in March for the dedication of Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse in the Shiel Student Life Center. John McCormick, aka Johnny Mac, was a business teacher whose passion was ensuring his students knew how to "get along in life," especially being able to understand finances, starting with the basics of managing a checking account.

McCormick started three student-run coffeehouses in three area high schools. Two are still open, including the one at Franklin Central High School, which is named McCormick's Cafe. After a long battle with cancer, McCormick passed away in 2016. His family says he would be proud and humbled to have a coffeehouse named after him at Cathedral.

Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse is student-run and we'd like to give special thanks to our business, accounting, art, and three-sector educators and students for collaborating on this venture. Collaboration on this project has been the perfect blend and students are doing a great job keeping business percolating for the coffeehouse.

Among those attending the dedication were McCormick's widow, Laurie '91, and his three boys, Sean '16, Kiernan '19, and Brendan '22. His mother-in-law and father-in-law, Laurie and Jim Alerding '63, and extended family members were also present.

Thank you to both the McCormick and Alerding families, and the Cathedral family, for making this dream a reality. Also of note, the signature on the logo is a replica of John McCormick's actual signature, another way his legacy will live on for years to come.

HATS OFF TO TED KARRAS '11 AND MATT RENIE '11

You could say Ted Karras '11 wears many hats. He's an Indianapolis native, a Cathedral graduate, a star player on the Cincinnati Bengals, and the creator of "The Cincy Hat.”

Karras teamed up with a neighbor to make custom Cincy Hats for his teammates when he arrived in Cincinnati. Karras said the hats were extremely popular, and the city of Cincinnati wanted to sell them.

Karras never wanted to profit from the sale of the hats, so he turned to his best friend, Cathedral grad, Matt Renie '11. Renie's mom is the executive director of the local nonprofit, Village of Merici. The Village of Merici's mission is to enable independent lifestyles for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Since November 2022, when Karras and Renie began selling The Cincy Hat, nearly $400,000 of profit has gone directly to Village of Merici.

Karras and Renie came up with the idea of getting some Indy gear together to see what they could do in their hometown. In their first two weeks, they sold $20,000 of Indy Hat gear!

"Cathedral was really the genesis of my lifelong friendship with Ted," says Renie, "and we're proud to give back to the community in an entrepreneurial endeavor."

KATHY MCCULLOUGH

RETIRES

AFTER 26 YEARS OF HITTING ALL THE RIGHT NOTES

If you’re lucky, you have a music teacher in your life who is more than an educator. You have someone who mentors you, believes in you, and helps you grow as a musician and as a person. You have someone who is both a mother figure and a friend; for whom you have the utmost respect and who you know will support you in all that you do. That person, for thousands of students at Cathedral High School, has been band director Kathy McCullough.

"Nothing but love and respect for Kathy," says band parent Jenny Plummer. "I'm thankful that my daughter was blessed to have an opportunity to work with a director who not only loves her job but loves those whose lives she impacts. She provides a safe environment for everyone and is always there to support and guide them to be successful and a better version of themselves."

McCullough is not one to toot her own horn. When complimented, she quickly turns the focus back on the band. "The students are amazing," says McCullough. "I love working with them, watching them grow and improve as musicians and young adults."

During her time at Cathedral, the band has traveled four times to Ireland, three times to Hawaii, and six times to Disney World. "I LOVE taking the students to play music 'off the Hill’ to represent the school, their parents, and themselves."

The Pride of the Irish has included football players, cheerleaders, and even the school mascot. Band students are also in theatre, show choir, track, swimming, and countless other activities. McCullough ensured the band was accessible to anyone who wanted to join.

At the end of their senior year, the Class of 2023 was asked to write about their most influential Cathedral educator. One senior wrote, "What a fabulous person, educator, and band director. Kathy McCullough truly has been one of my favorites over the years. She is so kind and is honestly there to help every single one of her students. She has given me memories, taught me skills, and shown me love that I will never forget."

McCullough has many favorite band memories, among them working with her daughter, who teaches color guard. In addition, both of McCullough's sons have been photographers for the band; one was a part-time drum instructor; one played with the band in Hollywood; and McCullough's husband wrote arrangements for the band. It all comes back to family. McCullough's family played a huge role in supporting her at Cathedral, and McCullough fostered a family atmosphere among the band students. During her retirement, she’s looking forward to spending time with her family, specifically playing and traveling with her grandkids.

"I have had the best job in the world," says McCullough. "I've had wonderful staff, faculty, parents, and administration supporting me for 26 years. I have been so lucky."

Actually, Cathedral High School and the band students have been the lucky ones. Have a harmonious and blessed retirement, Kathy McCullough! You are so loved.

PRIDE OF THE IRISH MARCHES IN IRELAND

The luck of the Irish was with the Pride of the Irish in March as they toured and performed in Ireland! Students visited many historic sites, including the Rock of Cashel, Blarney Castle, and the Cliffs of Mohr. They listened to Irish music, watched Irish dancers, and performed twice. The first performance was at President John F. Kennedy Memorial Park in Cobh. The second performance, and the highlight of the trip, was marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin.

More than 170 band students, chaperones, and families made the journey, and created memories that will last a lifetime. Special thanks to Cathedral Band Director Kathy McCullough, Color Guard Director Lauren (McCullough) Taylor, and the administration for making this trip possible.

A group of students also helped beautify Cathedral's campus. This Day of Service was a perfect opportunity for our sophomores to live out our Holy Cross values by providing hope for others.

JUNIOR CLASS RETREAT

At Cathedral High School, part of our mission is to transform the hearts and minds of our students. We were thrilled to offer the Class of 2024 an opportunity to participate in a pilgrimage to South Bend. Connecting to our Holy Cross roots, the junior class spent time at the Moreau Seminary, University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, and Holy Cross College. This roughly 36-hour pilgrimage is a new opportunity for the junior class and one we hope to continue. Special thanks to our Campus Ministry department, adult chaperones, Class of 2023 peer mentors, and everyone who supported this retreat with their encouragement and prayers.

HOLY CROSS VALUE OF FAMILY IN FULL FORCE

Did you know 42 educators have a child or children attending Cathedral High School? The educators and their children gathered for a special breakfast during Catholic Schools Week. It is a blessing for these parents to go to work each day knowing talented and gifted educators are teaching their children in the same building! These educators are "all in" when it comes to the value of a Catholic, Holy Cross education!

JOYFUL J-TERM

Cathedral High School was excited to host its second J-Term during the first two weeks of January. Our fantastic educators were incredibly innovative as they exposed students to new subjects and offered unique travel and service opportunities. Our students knitted caps for cancer patients and volunteered at Holy Angels Catholic School. Other courses included Farm Life, Outdoor Safety Certification, yoga and wellness, 3-D printing, introduction to special education, Mock Trial, All About Fashion, and so much more. J-Term trips

included a New York Cabaret experience in New York City, marine biology in Key Largo, Florida, an HBCU/ Black heritage experience through Tennessee and Alabama, and Living Latin in Rome.

More than 150 students participated in internships in various fields, including education, service, medicine, business, finance, marketing, fashion and design, real estate, and more. Several of those internships led to job opportunities. Greatness is calling!

31 SPRING/SUMMER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Baseball

This is a team with potential that worked to fulfill it.

Cathedral High School baseball did just that with a solid, consistent 2023 season that ended with a run into the postseason.

“We were really pleased with our body of work throughout the season,” Irish baseball coach Ed Freije '99 said.

The Irish, a traditional city and state power, followed a 2022 state runner-up season with a strong 2023 season, in which they went 20-4 in the regular season and finished No. 4 in the final Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A rankings.

The Irish in 2023 won a third consecutive sectional title, beating Pike 8-1 in a semifinal, and beating North Central 7-3 in the Class 4A Sectional 10 championship game. They lost to New Palestine 4-2 in the regional playoff.

SPORTS WRAPS

Basketball – Boys

The Irish finished 19-6 against a national schedule, won a second consecutive Sectional 10 Class 4A title, and lost

Basketball – Girls

The Irish, who finished as the runner-up to Heritage Christian in the City Tournament, were led in 2022-23 by:

Senior Layla Gold (21.9 points per game, nine rebounds, 2.5 assists), who Coach Lisa Finn said had a “great year, just doing a little bit of everything for us.” Layla was named a 2023 Indiana All-Star.

Junior Taylor Lewis (10.1 PPG, 7.6 RPG) who missed three games with a concussion midway through the season.

Sophomore Jaeda Wilson (7.7 PPG, 3.1 RPG).

Junior Catherine Cline (4.7 PPG, 5.0 RPG).

Sophomore Abby Beasley (4.0 PPG, 2.4 RPG).

Senior Nya Huff (3.0 PPG, 2.9 RPG).

to teams from Indiana.

They were led by a core group of seniors, most of whom played key roles each of the last two seasons. They were:

Xavier Booker

A Michigan State commit and McDonald’s All-American selection, Booker averaged 15.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game as a senior. “He leaves behind a legacy of excellence,” Coach Jason Delaney said.

Jared Tibbs

A Purdue football commitment and the 2022-23 City Male Athlete of the Year, who Delaney said may be the best football/ basketball player in Cathedral history, Tibbs averaged 16.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as a senior.

Jake Davis

A small forward and a Mercer commit, Davis averaged 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a senior and also set a state record for charges taken in a career. “He was a team-first guy who did whatever it took to be successful,” Delaney said.

Sincere Germany

An Albion College commit, Sincere averaged 5.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game after moving into a starting role as a senior.

Kamari Slaughter

Kamari was a guard who averaged 8.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game as a senior after transferring from Portage. “To watch how he evolved and became a part of the program, how he molded himself, I have a lot of respect for that,” Delaney said.

32 SPRING/SUMMER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Cheerleading

Much went right in 2022 -23 for Cathedral High School cheerleading.

Camaraderie was high and the Irish found good balance throughout the school year–and good success in competition and school spirit. That was the objective for the program. That made 2022-23 a strong season for Irish cheerleading and a memorable one.

“We had a very successful year overall,” said Irish cheerleading coach Jessica Long '02 Stoner, in her second season leading the program. “It was great.”

The Irish not only had a strong regular season, but they also performed well in competitions, finishing second in their division at the Hoosier Regional Competition at Hamilton Southeastern in October, then advancing to the second round of the National High School Cheerleading Competition in February.

The Irish, who placed fourth in the Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament in 2022, lost state runner-up Ryan Ford from that team, who went on to play at the University of Cincinnati. They moved forward in 2023 with a team led by tournament-tough seniors and improving underclassmen.

The Irish finished second in the City Tournament to Heritage Christian in 2023 and won the Culver Invitational at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend.

Golf

This was a solid team—a good team.

Cathedral High School boys golf performed consistently for much of the 2023 season, doing so with strong performances from players of various levels and experience playing major roles. That made 2023 a successful season, as coach Mike Miller saw it. “It was really, really enjoyable,” Miller said.

Bowling

This was a time of real achievement and real improvement.

As Coach Mark Noe saw it, that made the 2022-23 season a successful and significant one for both the Cathedral High School girls bowling team and the boys team.

“We had a good season,” Noe, the Irish girls and boys bowling coach, said.

The Irish boys, who have improved steadily in recent seasons, had another strong season in 2022-23. They ranked among the top three teams in their sectional throughout the regular season before finishing fourth in the postseason sectional. Seniors Hunter Browning, Charlie Valentine, and Antonio Arroyo represented Cathedral in the Academic All-State Bowling Tournament.

The Irish girls also showed improvement in 2022-23, finishing fifth in the conference after multiple consecutive sixth-place finishes in the six-team league.

33 SPRING/SUMMER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Hockey

The Central Indiana Knights won big in 2022-23.

They won enough to be one of Indiana’s best high school hockey teams, and the program had more success throughout a long season than it has had in a long time.

“The kids should be very proud of what they accomplished this year,” Knights head coach Rob Pozzebon said.

The Knights, a team made up of players from multiple Central Indiana high schools, included five Cathedral players in 2022-23. They won the Hoosier League tournament in 2023 for the first time in program history and qualified for the Class 4A state tournament, with Class 4A being the highest classification in Indiana high school hockey.

Lacrosse – Girls

The future is bright for Cathedral High School girls lacrosse.

The Irish in 2023 were a solid team, with multiple impressive victories. They accomplished those with a motivated—and hard-working—team that played well together through difficult circumstances.

That produced a lot of memorable moments. And a strong foundation.

“I love this team,” Irish girls lacrosse coach Mary Ann White '11 said. “This was a development year. It was a growing year. They were willing to grow, willing to fight. They were so coachable.”

The Irish, long a strong area program with a history of postseason success, finished the 2023 season 6-9. They lost to Penn, 11-7, in the first round of the Indiana Girls Lacrosse Association state tournament.

Lacrosse – Boys

The season ended in a familiar place.

And if it took a difficult road to arrive there for the 2023 Cathedral High School boys lacrosse team, that adversity made the Irish stronger. And it made them one of the state’s best programs yet again.

“It’s baptism by fire – that’s what these guys had to do,” longtime Irish boys lacrosse coach Andy Gruber said.

The Irish remained one of the top programs in Indiana against one of the state’s toughest schedules, finishing the regular season No. 3 in the state rankings.

For a complete wrap up of each sport, go to gocathedral.com/athletics

They then advanced to the Indiana High School Lacrosse Association final four, losing 12-7 to Carmel in a state semifinal.

34 SPRING/SUMMER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Rugby

This was a different sort of year for the Royal Irish Rugby Society, a difficult year. That didn’t make the 2023 season unsuccessful.

Not even close.

“It has been very special,” David Snyder said.

The Royal Irish, long a national and Midwest power, had lower numbers in the program than usual in 2023—and the result was a difficult performance in the Midwest tournament in early May, before losing in the semifinal of the state tournament to an unbeaten Pendleton club.

The Royal Irish also in 2023 opted against playing in the national tournament, with Snyder saying he expects numbers to improve moving forward, and that this season’s players excelled, given the circumstances.

Swimming – Boys

They set their objectives high, exceeding many of them.

Cathedral High School boys swimming achieved a high standard individually in 2023. The Irish did so as a team, as well, capping a memorable season with a strong postseason.

“The boys season went really well,” Irish swimming coach Megan Ahnert said.

The 2023 Irish boys swimming team, led by strong senior and freshman classes, finished fifth in the Sectional 14 meet at North Central with 164 points behind sectional champion North Central. The Irish boys finished 5th at sectionals and won the City Meet. Sammy Bridges '23 broke the school record three times this year, and took 4th place at sectionals in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Swimming – Girls

There was a lot of balance–and a lot of individual improvement, too.

There was also real postseason achievement from pretty much the entire team, and coach Megan Ahnert liked all those things about 2022-23 Cathedral High School girls swimming.

“The girls did fantastic,” Ahnert said.

For a complete wrap up of each sport, go to gocathedral.com/athletics

Ahnert, in her eighth season with the program and first as head coach, said the Irish girls entered 2023 with lofty goals and achieved many of them. A highlight came in the postseason, when every Irish girls swimmer who entered a sectional preliminary advanced to at least one final.

“That blew me out of the water,” Ahnert said.

35 SPRING/SUMMER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Track and Field – Boys

The future is bright for Cathedral High School boys track and field.

What made the 2023 season memorable is that the present was bright too–and that made for a successful season for the Irish.

It was a season of improvement, development, and performance.

“It was a fun group to see grow throughout the season,” Irish track and field coach John O’Hara '02 said of the boys team in 2023.

The Irish, who featured youth and experience in 2023, also featured high character and strong academics. It was a talented group that performed consistently well, winning the Pendleton Heights Invitational and finishing second at the Indianapolis City Meet.

They finished fifth at the Sectional 19 meet, then finished 12th at the Regional 5 meet.

Junior Jonathon Phillips advanced to the state meet in the 100-meter dash after placing sixth at the regional meet in 10.9 seconds. The Irish 4x100 relay team of junior Alex Richards, Phillips, sophomore Devaughn Slaughter and senior Sterling Smith finished ninth at the state meet in 42.23.

teams and several standout individual performances–led the Irish to a 10th-place finish in the Indiana High School Athletic Association State meet.

Swart set a state record with a vault of 13 feet, six-and-ahalf inches. The team state finish was the second best in school history. Sophomore Kate Kubacki placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.13 at the state meet.

“We had some really amazing seniors,” Irish track and field coach John O’Hara '02 said. “A few of them had not experienced state finals. I would say our senior class did an amazing job.”

Track and Field – Girls

Another year, another strong season.

That has become the norm for Cathedral High School girls track and field, and it remained that way for an experienced Irish team in 2023.

Senior Kailee Swart won the state pole-vaulting title, and her state-record performance–along with strong relay

Tennis – Girls

The 2023 season was about accomplishment.

The Irish won two significant titles and had a chance at another, all while laying a foundation for what could be a strong future for one of Indianapolis’ top high school girls tennis programs.

“It was a good season,” said Irish girls tennis coach Jeff Giles.

The Irish, a young and talented team with a bright future, won the Penn Invitational and City Championship in 2023. They did so against another difficult schedule for the program and rose to as high as No. 4 in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association rankings.

The Irish finished the season 10-6, losing to state and area perennial power North Central, 3-2, in a Sectional 44 semifinal at North Central.

36 SPRING/SUMMER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Softball

This was a season about difficult times. And youth.

A young Cathedral High School softball team overcame significant adversity in 2023. The result was a memorable season that set the stage for a strong future.

And as Tony Matthews saw it, that made this a good season. Very good.

“We played some good ball this season,” the Irish’s longtime head softball coach said.

The Irish, an annual contender in recent seasons, finished the 2023 season with another strong record–and another solid postseason performance. They finished the season 18-10, advancing to the Class 4A, Sectional 10 championship game.

A season highlight came when the Irish won the City Championship, beating Scecina, 16-2 to advance to the championship game, where they beat Heritage Christian, 3-1.

Wrestling

Sean McGinley '88 was proud of this team. Really proud.

Cathedral High School wrestling in 2022-23 qualified six wrestlers for the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Tournament while also winning team championships in the first three rounds of the postseason.

That made for another successful season for one of the most tradition-rich high school wrestling programs in Central Indiana.

“They fought all the way until the end,” McGinley, the Irish’s longtime wrestling coach, said. “They were a team you wanted at your back, basically.”

The Irish finished tied for 19th at the state tournament with 22 points, capping yet another strong season for one of Indiana’s top high school programs.

Volleyball – Boys

This program continues in a strong direction.

That was the expectation for 2023 Cathedral High School boys volleyball–and Tyler McClure '08 said that happened during an outstanding season that featured balance, talent, and success.

“It was definitely our expectation to be one of the top teams,” said McClure, who finished his third season as the Irish boys volleyball coach in 2023. “We came in with expectations of improvement, expecting to contend, and we definitely held on to that throughout the year.”

The team finished 27-8 on the season. They advanced to the Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association final four before losing in a state semifinal to Fishers, 3-0.
