CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS
SPRING / SUMMER 2025
HISTORY MADE

SPRING / SUMMER 2025
“And to young people, I say: Do not be afraid! Accept the invitation of the Church and of Christ the Lord!”
With these words, our new Pope Leo XIV opened his papacy—and, symbolically, the doors of the Catholic Church and to Christ—to a new generation of young people. Amid all the excitement of this spring, including the culminating events for the Class of 2025, the naming of a new Holy Father—one who grew up in our neck of the woods—has been most surprising and invigorating.
It seems everyone has a story or connection with our “South Side of Chicago” Pope: as a Bears and White Sox fan, a Villanova grad, a friend, missionary and citizen of Peru (the country, not the Indiana city!), and a member of the Augustinian order and thus a professed fan of St. Augustine! In his own humble and sincere manner, Pope Leo XIV has brought a jolt of juice, as the kids say, to our universal Catholic community. What a blessing it is to be part of that community!
This summer, we are putting our best minds together to chart the course of our next few years. With renewed vigor, we are embracing the reality of artificial intelligence in our schools—while staying deeply rooted in our Catholic and Holy Cross roots and values.
I recently came across a quote attributed to Plato, lamenting that the advent of widespread writing would bring the fall of civilization. It's a good reminder that every leap forward comes with its skeptics. Our goal is to embrace the old while keeping an eye on our Mission and Vision, and thoughtful technology can be a valuable part of that.
In fact, the theme for our strategic planning centers on the individual student experience, especially in the face of a society that's increasingly disconnected. The Cathedral experience has always been deeply personal, and we will continue to adjust as our students and their needs evolve. This keeps us on our toes and ensures that the Cathedral student experience will always be relevant and engaging. Look for fresh and exciting messaging as we roll out our new Strategic Plan this fall!
In closing, I want to share another timely quote from our new Holy Father: “Brothers and sisters, this is the hour for love! The heart of the Gospel is the love of God that makes us brothers and sisters.”
In this season of renewed hope and joy for the Catholic Church worldwide, we share in that light—celebrating 275 new Cathedral graduates heading out to transform the world and welcoming more than 300 freshmen to the Hill.
With a new Strategic Plan and our firm foundation in Catholic and Holy Cross Values, we are ready to continue answering the call to greatness. Thank you for joining me in this hope and joy!
Faithfully,
Rob Bridges, PhD President

Now that the 2024-2025 academic year has ended, I find myself reflecting on the journey we've taken together— and the many moments of grace, growth, and greatness we've shared along the way. This season is always bittersweet: a time to celebrate accomplishments, to give thanks, and bid farewell to a remarkable group of students (and sadly, some families, too) who have left a lasting remark on Cathedral.
This year, our Senior class chose Zeal as our Holy Cross theme—and how fitting it has been. Zeal, that tireless spirit of love and dedication to making God known, loved, and served, has been on full display in the Class of 2025 and throughout our school community. With passion and perseverance, our students met challenges head-on, lifted one another up, and pursued greatness in every corner of campus life.
Once again, we are proud to celebrate 100% college acceptance for our Seniors. Many were directly admitted to prestigious programs in fields such as engineering, business, the arts, and the sciences. Their success is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and belief in the power of their Cathedral education—what Archbishop Thompson called at graduation “one of the best in the world.”
This year, 34 of our Seniors earned the prestigious AP Capstone distinction, having completed both AP Seminar and AP Research. These students tackled complex global issues, asked courageous and compelling questions, and pursued original research grounded in integrity and intellectual curiosity. Their work reflects not only academic excellence but also a deep commitment to truth and thoughtful inquiry.
All 275 Seniors completed their St. André Project, embodying service and compassion in action, two of the hallmarks of a Cathedral education. Whether working with local nonprofits, mentoring younger students, or addressing urgent community needs, they brought Zeal to their service, making a tangible difference in the lives of others and honoring the legacy of the only Holy Cross Saint, St. André Bessette.
Of course, these highlights only begin to tell the story of this extraordinary year. Our students have excelled in the classroom, on the stage, and on the courts and fields. We
are incredibly proud of each and every one of them. And we will miss this Senior class more than words can express.
A Catholic education at Cathedral offers far more than academic excellence. It nurtures the whole person— mind, body, and soul. Grounded in the Holy Cross tradition, we strive to form young people of deep faith, strong character, and a spirit of service. Our Mission is not simply to prepare students for college and careers, but to prepare them for a life of purpose, meaning, moral conviction, and, ultimately, Heaven. We aim to give them both the competence to see the challenges of our world and the courage to act as agents of hope and change.
To our Cathedral families: thank you. Thank you for entrusting your children to our care, supporting our mission, and partnering with us in this sacred work of formation. It is an honor to walk with your children during these pivotal years of their lives. May God bless you and your families this summer and always.
God Bless,
Mark Matthews Principal
Cathedral was blessed to dedicate her new Grotto on May 7. The Grotto, made possible by the generosity of Ryan Hasbrook '92 and his family, is located across from the circle and near the practice field on Cathedral's campus.
“Cathedral is a great Catholic school, and every great Catholic school should have a grotto,” says Ryan. “I'm thrilled that Cathedral students will have this beautiful space to gather, meditate, and pray.”
Cathedral educator Father Geoff Mooney, C.S.C. blessed the Grotto, which is dedicated in memory of Ryan's sister, Amy Hasbrook '96.
We hope the Cathedral family will visit the Grotto often to light a candle, pray, and reflect on God's beauty and grace.
When you hear the name Bryce Llewellyn '22, you may think of the talented athlete whose speed and talent on the football field are hard to miss. Bryce was a team captain for the Fighting Irish and a key contributor to Cathedral's 5A State Championship in 2020.
What you may not know about Bryce is that he can successfully tackle ingredients in the kitchen, too. “I've always loved to cook,” says Bryce, “and the dorm food at Charleston Southern University wasn't the best. So, during my freshman year, I started a food prep business. It was a great way for me to make some extra money, and the students enjoyed my food.”
That taste of the food business quickly led to an exciting venture with his father, Marlon. In the summer of 2024, the father/son team launched Scotchy Jamaican Grill, a restaurant concept bringing authentic Jamaican cuisine to the Midwest. Marlon is a native of May Pen, Jamaica, and says the idea has been in his journal since 2021. “The inspiration for Scotchy Jamaican Grill came from a sermon at Heartland Church in Fishers,” says Marlon. “God told me, 'I am not going to make you leave this earth without trying everything I want you to try,'” he says.
Bryce played an integral role in developing the restaurant's brand, including the tagline 'Catch Ah Vibe,' which Bryce says captures the energy and atmosphere they wish to create. Now a defensive back at Eastern Michigan University, Bryce focuses on academics, football, family, faith, and his food business.
“I help with the restaurant's marketing while I'm on campus,” says Bryce, “and this summer, I plan to spend my weekends in Fishers working side-by-side with my dad at the restaurant.”
Bryce's biggest mentor is his father, of course, and he also credits several Cathedral educators for inspiring his entrepreneurial and athletic goals. “I certainly can't mention just one person,” says Bryce. “I'm so thankful for Coach (Adam) Barth, Coach (Howie) Fogel, Mrs. (Gretchen) Watko '00, Mrs. (Nancy) Wheeler, and Mrs. (Jean) Smith '97. They all encouraged and supported me.”
High School Hustle, an organization that helps young entrepreneurs start their businesses, visited Cathedral after Bryce graduated. Even so, several courses helped pave the way for him. Bryce says the entrepreneurship and economics classes at Cathedral gave him a solid foundation he's building on in college. His ultimate goal is to play football “as far as God takes him” and to grow the business with his father. “There's no loss when you take risks,” says Bryce. “You either learn a lesson, or you get a huge reward. Either way, you must take a risk and keep moving forward.”
Alberto Foronda '27 already has his career plans figured out, and he's not wasting any time making his dreams a reality. Last summer, he started auto detailing and perfecting his craft. He later learned about High School Hustle and earned a spot in the program.
High School Hustle is a community of entrepreneurs that empowers students to start their own businesses. More than 25 schools across the state are involved. High School Hustle visited Cathedral this spring and awarded six students $100 each for their successful hustle pitches. At the end of the summer, the ten Indiana students who raise the most money from their hustle will receive $10,000 each. Even if Alberto doesn't win the huge monetary prize, he has big goals for his future.
His goal this summer is to grow the hustle to a point where he doesn't have to do the work himself but can hire people to do the auto detailing. “This way, I can generate passive income, which is a great goal,” says Alberto. “Once I grow a little more, I want to get into the car flipping business. I can buy old used cars, restore and flip them, then sell more cars.”
Cathedral is proud to have connections to High School Hustle, including Michael Mercho '07, who serves as Campus President, and Kristian Andersen, who serves as chairman. High School Hustle is building a nationwide movement to shape the next generation of leaders. Greatness is calling, and Cathedral entrepreneurs of all ages are answering!
Congratulations to Sarah-Grace Monroe '25 on releasing her first album, WAIT. She has been working on this release for nearly six years as a singer-songwriter. With lyrics that speak to your heart as a Christian and a folk music style, your spirit is sure to be moved.
Sarah-Grace's song, “Message in a Bottle,” was played on 107.5 The Fan Morning Show after Cathedral educator Marc Quaranta sent it in, surprising Sarah-Grace and her family. “I was blown away when I heard my song playing and the DJs talking about it,” says SarahGrace. “I am honored that Mr. Q thought it was good enough to send to 107.5 and that they chose to play it live. Thank you, Mr. Q.”
Sarah-Grace will attend Anderson University in the fall to study audio engineering and sound design. “I am excited about the next steps and continuing my music journey. I plan to keep songwriting, but I'm especially excited to learn how to produce music and explore sound design.”
If you'd like to listen to Sarah-Grace's heartfelt and beautiful music, you can visit her website at www.sarah-grace.com. Cathedral is so proud of Sarah-Grace for using her God-given talent to sing His praises and bring joy to all who listen to her angelic voice.
Ayrton Houk '22 and Solly Mervis '23 were racing toward a dream while they were Cathedral students— and they continue accelerating toward excellence both in the classroom and on the racetrack. Now a junior at Purdue University's Daniels School of Business, Ayrton has earned Dean's List honors while pursuing a degree in finance. This summer, he'll be managing a full-time internship at Goelzer Investment Management while continuing his professional racing career in the USF Pro Championship Series' USF2000 division, a rare and demanding combination that showcases both his discipline and drive.
“Cathedral's academic rigor—especially the challenge of balancing school, racing, and work—gave me the time management skills I use every day,” Ayrton says. “Mrs. (Laurie) O'Brien's speech class helped me prepare for interviews and sponsor pitches, and Cathedral's strong
faith foundation taught me to stay centered. I still pray before every race.”
On the track, Ayrton has quickly earned a reputation as a gritty and talented driver. In 2024, he finished 11th overall in the USF2000 standings despite missing the Toronto rounds due to budget constraints. His rookie season included a best finish of 4th on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, a front-row qualifying effort at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, and multiple awards, including the USF Championship Spirit Award and the YACademy Move of the Year Award.
Solly's professional career is revving up after a successful season in the MotoAmerica Junior Cup Championship, with five top 10 finishes. “That success allowed me to move up to the Talent Cup series for the
2025 season, a stepping-stone on the path toward racing in MotoGP™, which is my goal,” says Solly. “The move up to Talent Cup has brought a new, more powerful bike. So far, the season has been an adjustment for both my team and me. But I'm putting all my effort into being the best racer I can be and continuing to learn from every race.”
Solly has three races this summer: the Talent Cup at AMA Vintage, MotoAmerica Superbikes at Virginia, and Permco MotoAmerica Superbikes.
When he's not racing, Solly quickly shifts into academic mode. He just completed his freshman year at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, majoring in mechanical engineering. He made the Dean's List for two consecutive quarters. “It's a credit to my AP Lit teacher
senior year, Mr. (Matthew) Panzer. He really pushed me to excel. And the support staff at Cathedral is always there to help out.”
And speaking of helping out, Cathedral has yet another connection to the racing world. IndyCar owner, driver, and three-time Indy 500 Pole Winner Ed Carpenter is a Cathedral parent to Ryder Carpenter '28 and Makenna Carpenter '26. Ed has hosted Cathedral students at his Indianapolis headquarters and even drove Santa to Cathedral's Christmas on the Hill in an IndyCar.
We hope Ayrton, Solly, and Ed Carpenter Racing see many checkered flags in the future, knowing their Cathedral family is cheering them across each finish line.
Congratulations to Moreau Scholarship recipient Carson Klenke '25. The Moreau Scholarship is available to entering freshmen at St. Edward's University who are graduates of a Holy Cross high school.
Scholarship recipients are among the top students in their class, with a strong academic profile, significant leadership, and community service involvement. St. Edward's is a Holy Cross university located in Austin, Texas.

Mission Integration
Seven zealous educators are home after attending the Holy Cross Convocation at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, this week. The Convocation is the largest annual gathering of Holy Cross educators from across the country and around the world.
In addition to learning from other Holy Cross educators, our representatives led sessions. Rose Egan and Karen Hovanec led a workshop on how to use student travel, exchange programs, and field trips to help students cross borders, literally and figuratively. Katie Lewis, Anthony Ernst, and Ed Freije '99 led a session on enriching student life and Christmas on the Hill. And Matt Cannaday led a workshop on viewing contemporary films through a sacramental lens. Cathedral educators are leaders in their field and lifelong learners.
After the group celebrated the liturgy, a beautiful photo was taken outside St. Edward's Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel.
We are thrilled to share that Maddy Kantner '25 and Marian Ferro De La Vega '25 were awarded the 2025 Holy Cross Brothers Scholarship! Only two seniors from Midwest Holy Cross high schools were awarded the Brothers Scholarship, and both recipients are Cathedral students. Maddy and Marian were recognized for their academic success and engagement in student life at Cathedral.
For their achievements, both of these outstanding students received a full-tuition scholarship to Holy Cross College.
Cathedral President Dr. Rob Bridges and Samantha Derksen from Holy Cross College celebrated with Maddy and Marian in our Holy Cross classroom.
Congratulations to our Holy Cross Award winners! These students were nominated by their educators for living out the Holy Cross Core Values. Students in the front row received the Saint Brother André Bessette Award for generous service to others, involvement in student activities, and demonstrating Christian values. Students in the second row received the Blessed Father Basil Moreau Award for leadership, excellence in the classroom, and service to their community.
The Class of 2027 was blessed to experience a Sophomore Retreat to St. Mary of the Woods.
There, the students visited the Shrine of St. Theodore Guerin, the patroness (along with St. Francis Xavier) of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, and the foundress of the Sisters of Providence in Indiana. She also was of great help to the Congregation of Holy Cross.
With our own Sister of Providence St. Mary Ann Stewart here on The Hill and with our legacy from Ladywood-St. Agnes, it was an appropriate way for our sophomores to learn more about intercessory prayer and to experience firsthand a bit more of the history and traditions of Cathedral. Throughout their time at Cathedral, from Freshmen Retreat, the Junior Retreat to South Bend, and Senior Retreat, our students have an opportunity for an extraordinary Holy Cross experience each year during their time at Cathedral. Thank you to our Campus Ministry Team and classroom and non-classroom educators who make these retreats possible.
“How we educate the mind will change with the times; how we cultivate the heart is and will remain timeless.”
- Blessed Basil Moreau, Founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross
“So professional, so intense, truly amazing!”
“I am so proud of our students for bringing this extraordinarily hard show to life!”
- Jordan Lugar Fox, Cathedral Theater Director
“One of the best shows I've seen!”
“Outstanding performances by all!”
Please join us in congratulating our fabulous choir program on extraordinary performances at the Fame National Competition at Hard Rock Live in Orlando. Concert Choir, Irish Adrenaline, and Adrenaline Rush Show Choirs won Grand Champion, and Ashlyn Jemison '25 and Sam Funk '26 earned Best Performer Awards! In addition, our choirs captured awards for Best Original Repertoire, Best Tech Crew, and the Fame overall National Champion. In addition to performing, Father Jomy offered Mass for our singers, directors, and chaperones. We are so grateful he was able to travel with our choirs. Whether on stage, the court, or the field, our faith always comes first. Congratulations to Choir Director Marian Bender, Assistant Jordan Fox, and all of our performers on an incredible show choir season.
Congratulations to our magnificent musicians who won Gold on a Level 1 solo at the State ISSMA Contest!

Congratulations to Alijah Poston '25 on receiving the Center for Leadership Development's (CLD) Torchbearer Prize for Youth Excellence! Each year, CLD leadership selects one male and one female who strongly embodies the CLD Principles for Success. When asked about Alijah, CLD leaders said, “Alijah is truly exceptional. His humility shines through, yet his presence commands attention the moment he enters a room, embodying greatness in everything he does. His intelligence, character, and unwavering commitment to his future, along with his leadership in school and community, define the qualities we aspire to see in every CLD student.” Alijah is an Honor Roll student, Black Student Union leader, Peer Minister, and four-year track and crosscountry athlete. He also volunteers in the community and is an example of our Holy Cross Values.
During the second week of January, students took a break from their usual classes and explored different interests. Some students enjoyed terrific experiences in Indianapolis, others traveled to a different state, while others immersed themselves overseas in a different culture. Thank you to our educators for providing enriching opportunities for our students!

“I want to attend Cathedral High School not only because it would be the best for me, but I feel I would be the best for it. Cathedral has the academic rigor I deeply want to prepare [me] for whatever career the Lord draws me to. Cathedral also has the opportunity for me to grow in my faith, surrounded by a student and staff body passionate about Christianity.”

Congratulations, 2025 Glendys Moosbrugger, Hon.'13 Volunteers of the Year
Please help us thank our 2025 Glendys Moosbrugger, Hon. '13 Volunteers of the Year: Kristi Macadaeg and Tom and Tammy Quadrini!
Kristi has been an active member of the Cathedral community for the past 13 years. With an unwavering positive attitude and a spirit of generosity, she is always the first to step up and offer her time and talents wherever needed. Whether she's supporting admissions events with warmth and grace, organizing and contributing to the beautifully detailed educator Christmas luncheons for Mothers Club, or spending countless hours to aid the success of many ShamrAuctions, she embodies what it means to serve with love—and style!
The Quandrinis are dedicated volunteers who embody selflessness and commitment in everything they do for our theater and choir programs. Tammy has led the Theater Parent Booster as President, and Tom has led the Tech Dad's Construction Team. They were instrumental in building and maintaining sets, coordinating parent teams for each competition, and ensuring each production ran seamlessly. Their steadfast dedication sets them apart, even when their child is not performing. Their tireless efforts have strengthened our theater and choir communities and made every production and competition smoother for students and staff alike.
ShamrAuction raised an astounding $1,042,991 for Cathedral High School! We are blessed to have support from our sponsors, donors, volunteers, committee members, and especially our co-chairs, Michelle Forslund and John McDonald. All funds raised will go directly to the Cathedral Family of Funds supporting academic and faculty initiatives, the arts, technology, athletics, and tuition assistance.
Thank you for helping to make a difference in the lives of our students and supporting the mission of Cathedral High School. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, February 28, 2026, for the 49th annual ShamrAuction.

Cathedral alumni and friends created the Shamrock Scholars program for those who wanted more than a way to give. Shamrock Scholars grantors chose to provide tuition assistance grants for students during their time at Cathedral. Benefactors are also encouraged to meet with and develop mentoring relationships with their students.

History was made this year as Cathedral's softball team won the class 3A state championship, the first in program history! The Lady Irish finished the season 29-2, with several players stepping up at different times throughout the tournament.
The Irish defeated Hanover Central 5-4 to capture the title. “The middle and bottom of the lineup came through like it did, then the top of the lineup did its thing too,” said Coach Tony Matthews. “This bunch, they just bring it together with everything.”
A huge congratulations to Anna Moore on receiving the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award! Cathedral is so proud of Anna, the entire team, and the coaching staff. Greatness called, and Cathedral softball answered!
Cathedral High School boys basketball delivered another strong season in 2024–2025, performing well against one of the state's toughest schedules.
“Just being around these guys was a lot of fun,” Irish boys basketball coach Jason Delaney said. “It was a really good group of kids. And our guys improved quite a bit statistically. The whole point of coaching is the relationships for life, and we feel like we established those.”
The Irish, who finished the regular season No. 1 in the Class 3A Indiana Basketball Coaches Association state rankings and won the City Tournament, finished the '24-25 season 20-5. They won 11 consecutive late-season games before losing to Crispus Attucks, 59-54 in the Class 3A, Section 26 semifinals.
This was a major step in an exciting direction.
Cathedral High School girls basketball turned in its best season in two decades in 2024-2025, with a veteran team turning in big regular-season moments and a deep playoff run. This was a memorable season and a foundation for the future.
“Putting together a year like we did this year was pretty awesome,” Lisa Finn said.
The Irish in Finn's sixth season as head coach performed strong throughout the postseason, winning their first sectional title since 2005 and their first regional title since 2001 to qualify for the semistate round of the Class 3A state tournament.
The Irish also won the City Tournament with a 48-45 victory over Chatard and the Northeastern Holiday Tournament with a 65-34 victory over Northeastern.
Cathedral High School baseball has long been one of Indiana's top programs, and the 2025 Irish have the ability and potential to rank in that group again.
“I like this group a lot,” shared Irish baseball coach Ed Freije '99. “We've got camaraderie—it's a good group.”
After starting the season 5-0, the Irish held a 10-6 record by early May, despite battling early-season injuries and a tough schedule. They were ranked No. 8 in the Indiana High School Coaches Association Class 3A state poll as of April 14.
The Irish won the City Championship and finished the regular season with an 11-5 record.
Cathedral High School cheerleading continued developing in strong, positive ways throughout the 2024-2025 school year—and that made Jessica Long '02 Stoner's final season coaching the program significant and memorable.
“We had a great season overall,” Stoner said.
Irish Cheerleading in '24-25 not only continued to grow with 40 total members. A 17-member competition team finished 19th of 42 teams at the National High School Cheerleading Competition in Florida. The Irish qualified for the national competition with a first-place finish in the Hoosier Regional at Hamilton Southeastern.
This was history-making, exciting stuff.
Cathedral High School bowling registered the best season in program history in 2024-2025, a season that ended with a strong postseason as a team and individuals.
“We won't forget it for a while,” Cathedral bowling coach Mark Noe said. “It was a great run.” The Irish boys in '25 advanced through the postseason to win the Terre Haute semi-state before finishing third in the Indiana Bowling Centers Association high school state tournament—the best finish in program history.
Noe called winning semistate “huge.”
“The finish was way beyond expectations,” Noe said. “It was a beautiful season. Semistate was exciting and then moving into the final four [at the state tournament] …that was sweet.”
Irish senior Alex Jones was named captain of the Indy West boys team as the top point-scorer in the regular season with a 221.8-point average, with Irish sophomore Grace Zuerner earning all-conference honors and qualifying for the state tournament individually. Zuerner finished 12th at the state tournament with a score of 690, with junior Declan Sweeney finishing 14th in the state with a score of 783.
This was a season about a bright present—with perhaps a brighter future.
Cathedral High School boys golf registered a successful season in 2025—and did so with a talented, young team that revived the program's strong tradition.
The Fighting Irish made it to the State Finals, represented by Joe Whitlock, Luke Leaman, Sam Kinnett, Ben Kauffman, and Johnny Leaman. Also capping off the impressive season was coach Jim Grossi being named the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association Region 4 Coach of the Year!
“It was a blast,” Grossi said of the season. “I love the personalities. It's a great mix. We graduated maybe seven seniors [from the 2024 team], so seeing the underclassmen develop has been great.”
“It was a really great season for us,” Coach Mary Ann White '11 said. “They went head and shoulders above maybe where everyone thought their skill level was. They had grit, resistance, and focus—and they just outperformed what was expected from them all season. I'm very proud of them.”
In White's eighth season as head coach, the Irish reestablished themselves as one of Central Indiana's top girls high school lacrosse programs. They went 13-5 in the regular season, opening the postseason with a first-round victory over Culver Academy, 15-11.
They lost in the state quarterfinal to Hamilton Southeastern, 16-11.
This was a resurgent season for a strong program.
Cathedral High School girls lacrosse had one of its better seasons in recent memory in 2025, with an early winning streak setting the tone for quality regular-season and postseason performances.
The Irish, five-time Indiana High School Lacrosse Association state champions under head coach Andy Gruber, opened the 2025 season with a 7-3 record while once again facing one of the state's toughest schedules. Their only early losses came against top-tier in-state and out-of-state programs—but they also notched several impressive wins, including a 12-10 victory over Culver Academy on April 11.
“This is a group that has been together for the past couple of years on offense, and I think it shows,” Gruber said. “When they're clicking, they can be very dangerous.”
The Irish finished their season in the semistate round with a 12-6 record on the year.

The Central Indiana Knights, a high school hockey team made up of players from Cathedral and other Central Indiana schools, finished strong in 20242025. The young Knights advanced through the Class A state tournament and played well in the state final before losing to the Vipers, 4-1—a score perhaps not indicative of game play.
“We outplayed the other team and lost, which sometimes happens,” coach Rob Pozzebon said. The four Cathedral students on the team were senior Charles McCormick, junior Daniel Michael, and freshmen Quinn Ridgeway and Noah Hiott.
Cathedral High School boys swimming overcame a smaller-than-usual roster in 2024-2025 to register a successful season. That made for a satisfying end to Megan Ahnert's final season as head coach.
“The boys season was great,” she said.
The Irish boys, competing with a team of nine total swimmers, not only finished third in the Schools with No Pools Meet in 2025, but they also finished a strong second to Bishop Chatard in the City Meet. They then finished fifth in the Section 14 meet at Lawrence High School with 172 points.
“We had nine boys total—not even just nine on the varsity, but nine total,” Ahnert said. “Everything we were able to do with the boys season was just incredible under those circumstances.”
The Irish girls in Megan Ahnert's third and final season as head coach not only won the City Meet, but they also registered a strong finish in the Schools with No Pools Meet and ended the season with an impressive postseason.
The Irish girls finished fourth at the Section 14 meet at North Central, and won the City Meet for the first time since 2020.
“That was really exciting, just to have that energy,” Ahnert said of the City Meet.
Irish 2025 girls swimming again was led by the Class of 2026, a group Ahnert called “incredibly strong,” with freshman Olive Cunningham also turning in a strong season and following it with a record-setting postseason. “She just blew us out of the water this year,” Ahnert said of Cunningham, who finished second in the 100-yard backstroke at the sectional meet.
The Cathedral Irish continued its dominance in track and field this season. Devaughn Slaughter, who has committed to play football at Tennessee State in the fall, qualified for state with a blazing time of 10.67 in the 100m dash. Slaughter was also a finalist for the City Male Athlete of the Year award. The 4x100 team, consisting of Slaughter, sophomore Brady Windle, junior James Pappas, and senior Aidan Cunningham, also qualified for the state meet.
“I'm so proud of all of the young men on this team,” said coach John O'Hara '02. “We are so blessed to have all of these young people. I am going to miss our graduates, but I know they're going to continue to do great things.”
Strong stayed strong, and the success continued.
Cathedral High School girls track and field turned in yet another memorable season in 2025, solidifying the Irish's status as perennial state contenders.
“It was an enjoyable season,” head coach John O'Hara '02 said.
Irish girls track and field in O'Hara's sixth season as head coach qualified four individuals for the state meet: senior 300-meter hurdler Kate Kubacki, junior pole vaulters Makenna Carpenter and Piper Swart, and sophomore pole vaulter Cece Melloh.
The Irish's 4x400 relay team of freshman Lyla Cochrane, Kubacki, junior Brooklyn Bolin, and senior Addison Stanley also qualified for the state meet.
“They were solid leaders this season,” O'Hara said.
This was a season to remember.
Cathedral girls tennis took on its always-tough 2025 schedule while navigating a season marked by especially difficult challenges. They built toward the postseason and achieved a lot there.
“The biggest thing was they kept getting better,” head coach Jeff Giles said.
The Irish in Giles' fourth season as head girls tennis coach overcame multiple personnel losses to turn in a solid season, finishing second in the City Tournament. They then won the Section 27 title at Lawrence North and followed that with a second-place finish in the North Central regional.
The Irish beat Lawrence North 3-2 in the sectional semifinal and Heritage Christian 3-2 in the sectional final. They beat Covenant Christian 4-1 in the regional semifinal before losing in the regional final.
Congratulations to Karissa Rousseve-Ross '27 on breaking barriers in the male-dominated sport of wrestling. Karissa is the first Cathedral female to win a match against another young lady in IHSAA girls wrestling! This is the first year the IHSAA has recognized girls wrestling, making this an exciting time for high school sports in Indiana. Pictured with Karissa is Carrie Kauffman ’01 Huffman, who is the first alumnus to coach female wrestlers in Indiana. She’s the coach of the girls wrestling team at Noblesville High School. Congratulations to these strong, talented ladies, and may they continue to wrestle their way to success!
The 2024-2025 season was about perseverance and achievement for Cathedral High School wrestling, with one of the state's most-tradition-rich programs making a major impact throughout the postseason. For that, '25 Irish wrestling will be remembered.
“This year was just crazy,” Irish wrestling coach Sean McGinley '88 said.
McGinley said what made '25 particularly crazy was a series of injuries that hampered the Irish throughout the season, which ended with a 31st place finish at the 2025 Indiana High School Athletic Association State Finals.
The Irish qualified five wrestlers for the state finals, with junior Kyle Harden advancing to the state semifinals.
This season was about working and winning.
Cathedral High School boys volleyball did both in 2025, making another deep postseason run and further cementing the Irish as one of Indiana's premier boys volleyball programs.
“They're just a fun group to be around,” Irish boys volleyball coach Tyler McClure ‘08 said.
The Irish in '25 finished as the state runner-up for a second consecutive season. They registered a 25-5 regular-season record, entering the postseason ranked No. 3 in the state, according to MaxPreps. They swept through the Section 10 Tournament at Warren Central, beating New Castle (3-0) in the first round and Lawrence North (3-0) in the semifinal before beating Heritage Christian (3-0) in the sectional final.
The Irish swept Center Grove (3-0) and Bishop Chatard (3-0) in the Center Grove regional on May 24 to advance to the state tournament. They beat Lake Central, 3-0, in the state semifinal.
“We had a lot of individual talent, and we just built it so we could be a talented team by the end of the season,” McClure shared.
