A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR On May 19, I had the privilege of handing out 294 diplomas to our graduates. These young men and women are a very impressive group, and it was wonderful to celebrate this special day with them and their families. May is a special time, especially for our seniors, as they enjoy many fun Cathedral traditions, attend many ceremonies and parties, say goodbyes, and embark on new adventures.

We wish our newest alumni the best of luck as they start the next chapter of their lives.

Cathedral's founder, Bishop Joseph Chartrand, had a strong devotion to our Mother Mary, making her our patroness in 1918. Similarly, Mary was the patroness of Ladywood School, formerly located on Cathedral's current campus. For over 105 years, Mary has been protecting our school, with her statues adorning the campus. Now, through the generosity of Ryan Hasbrook '92, Mary will have a home in the new grotto being constructed this summer. Fittingly, on May 13, the Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima, Cathedral broke ground on the grotto, which will be prominently located at the top of The Hill. The grotto will contain a statue of Mary, areas to pray and reflect, and candles to light for intentions. It will be a place where our Cathedral family can gather individually or collectively to pray, celebrate Mass, and rest. Mary, our intercessor to Jesus and our protector from evil, symbolizes many virtues of our Catholic faith: motherhood, love, dedication to the will of God, purity, humility, and grace. In a world full of distractions, the grotto will offer much-needed peace and serenity surrounded by the love of Our Mother. I hope you'll find time to visit the grotto someday.

The Board of Directors has been diligently planning Cathedral's future. We are in a healthy financial position and continuously evaluate ways to improve our school. A facilities audit has been conducted, and a campus master plan developed. Not surprisingly, an older campus requires a significant investment that is needed for proper upkeep and maintenance.

Additionally, there is a pressing need for new facilities for our athletics and arts, including the need for our own home football stadium. The Board remains committed to evaluating and communicating the best path forward to meet Cathedral's current and future needs.

Every day at Cathedral begins and ends with prayer. I will conclude with the prayer recited by the students and educators at the end of each day.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Cathedral Family!

As we fully enter our Indiana summer, I am happy to share some thoughts from our beloved school with you.

The call to greatness was answered resoundingly by the recently graduated Class of 2024.

Reflecting on their journey, if you recall, they started their high school careers under the mask and cloud of COVID-19. Remember that? As a school, we made a prudent and sincere decision to fight to keep our doors open and preserve the precious face-to-face student experience. Our school leadership team made it happen, met every challenge set before us, and then stepped back and watched our educators and students grow, strive, transform, and thrive.

The accomplishments were so profound that we felt compelled to make a “brag sheet” (no, we do not do this every year!). Just one example/validation: we received the coveted Hatchell Cup for the nation's #1 high school football program, based on on-the-field results, academic achievement, and community service.

What a terrific honor! Additionally, we were named the “Nation's Best Catholic School” from our friends at Sock Religious, a Catholic Concepts school attire company. As wonderful as these national awards are, the true measure of our success is the transformation of our 294 graduates and sending them off to make a positive impact on our world. The Catholic Holy Cross teachings and values, combined with the sublime student experience we offer here 180 days per year, are truly the secret sauce that propels us forward in faith.

Our Brag Sheet also highlights seven Debutantes, six Military appointments, four Evan Scholars, five National Merit Commended Scholars and three National Merit Finalists. As for championships, our Debate Team won a state title, and our Show Choir won a National Grand Championship! (See the full list on

page 24.) Truly, our students met the call to greatness this year!

In closing, I want to emphasize our commitment to our Catholic faith and sacramental opportunities for our students. The Congregation of Holy Cross has recognized this and selected us as the Catholic Holy Cross High School to be blessed with two Holy Cross religious educators, Br. Matt Rehagen and Fr. Geoff Mooney. As mathematics and faith educators, these two have been a terrific blessing to us this year and for years to come! In addition to Sister Mary Ann Stewart and Fr. Jomy Mathew, our number of ordained religious has grown, enhancing our sacramental and faith-based opportunities. Most importantly, our students have the chance, every day, to interact positively with these special people daily and to experience the sacramental graces that cannot be replicated by AI or anything else!

I am deeply thankful to our educators for living and sharing the faith every day, and I am grateful that the Congregation of Holy Cross has also recognized our efforts.

Our past is historic, our present is fantastic, and our future is very bright indeed! In Jesus and Mary, we will continue in greatness and humility here on the Hill.

May God be praised, and St. Br. André, pray for us!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Please join me in celebrating the remarkable Class of 2024! These resilient students, who embarked on their high school journey during the challenging times of COVID-19, have shown incredible strength and determination. Despite the unexpected beginning of their high school experience, our innovative educators transformed their hearts and minds, and our students developed remarkable grit and perseverance. Our families, who stood by us, are an integral part of this success, and Cathedral is deeply grateful. Our Holy Cross value for the 2023-24 school year was Family, and we truly worked together as a family to achieve excellence and grow closer to God. The Class of 2024 is truly exceptional, with six military appointments, five National Merit Commended students, four Evans Scholars, and three National Merit Finalists!

But they are not just a group of scholarly students. They are a collection of talented musicians, amazing artists, and incredible athletes. I am immensely proud of all our graduates, and I am confident that they will use their God-given talents to make a positive impact on the world. I also want to express my gratitude to the dedicated educators who have played a significant role in shaping their hearts and minds over the last four years.

The future is bright as our graduates answer the call to greatness.

Of course, our seniors weren't the only students who enjoyed a fantastic year on the Hill. Experiential learning happened throughout our campus. From the studentrun Johnny Mac Coffeehouse to the ever-growing Irish Connection Broadcast Program, students challenged themselves in fun and unique ways. Our performing arts department produced entertaining plays and musicals, and our show choirs enjoyed tremendous success at local and national competitions. Our talented visual artists created breathtaking works that were on display in May during the Irish Art Show. And the Pride of the Irish Band

made us proud, marching in the Veteran's Day and St. Patrick's Day parades.

Our third-ever J-Term gave students fabulous opportunities to travel to Rome and France (and earn college credit), participate in service learning in Costa Rica, and hike beautiful parks throughout Indiana.

Other students learned to crochet and sew. A few students volunteered in our Irish Blessings Preschool, while others landed jobs through internships. In addition to delivering superb instruction in the classroom, Cathedral is always thinking "outside the box" on how we can provide real-world experiences to spark new interests and inspire lifelong learning.

Our campus ministry team tried something new this year, and our students and educators received it beautifully. They, along with our theatre department, produced the Living Stations of the Cross. The entire school gathered in the courtyard for the Stations on Holy Thursday, and it was one of the most moving experiences many of us have ever had on the Hill.

The Class of 2025 has chosen Zeal as our Holy Cross value for the 2024-25 school year. I look forward to partnering with our Cathedral family as we approach each day with tremendous Zeal and use that same enthusiasm to make God known, loved, and served, thus bringing salvation to others.

ALUMNUS TEAMS UP WITH EDUCATORS Brings Living Wall to Life After our beautiful Innovation Center was finished, educators Vicki Roessler and Dr. Aarti Brooks talked about how nice it would be to do something creative with the space that once occupied a stairwell. They talked about moving the library's big fish tank to the area, but it's too big to be transported to a different space. Around this same time, Principal Julie Barthel had a conversation with Jack Fleck '12 at a football party and discovered he works for Naturspire, a company that installs living walls. A living wall, or a green wall, is a vertical garden system where plants are grown on a structure attached to a wall. One conversation led to another, and soon Fleck installed a living wall near Cathedral's science wing.

"It is hard to put into words how meaningful this project has been for me," says Fleck. "To design and build something that should stand strong and proud and last far longer than I will ever be part of this world; the feeling is quite indescribable for me, especially keeping in mind my history as a student-athlete at Cathedral."

Fleck played football for Cathedral, and holds the record for the longest punt, 65 yards, and longest average punt record during a 4A state championship. Fleck now coaches kickers and punters for the Cathedral Fighting Irish and the Marian University Knights.

Once the wall was installed, Roessler and Brooks picked up the ball and ran with it. The Mother's Club awarded Roessler a $1,000 grant, which helped her buy a new smaller fish tank and supplies. Over Christmas break, she started painting the walls. During J-Term, Brooks helped with a second coat of paint. A group of freshmen

assembled the fish tank, while others worked with Theatre Technical Director Michael Moffatt to build the benches. Since J-Term, Roessler has spent many weekends and days off working on finishing the walls and helping Fleck install plants and frames. And Mic Roessler, former Cathedral art teacher and Fleck's former football coach (and Vicki Roessler's husband) helped draw the letters on the wall and hang planters.

"I hope the students feel the same way I do about it," says Roessler. "I hope it lifts their spirits and brings them both excitement about STEM, as well as a calming, confident feeling. And I hope it inspires students to have a positive attitude towards STEM and to give STEM classes a try."

Next school year, the plan is to have the AP Environmental Science class take care of the plants, providing students with hands-on experience in plant care and environmental science. This will not only enrich their learning experience but also foster a deeper appreciation for STEM. Roessler will continue to take care of the fish tanks, ensuring that our living wall remains a vibrant and inspiring part of our school environment.

Special thanks to Vicki Roessler, Mic Roessler, Dr. Aarti Brooks, and Michael Moffatt for their hard work on this beautiful space! And, of course, thank you to Jack Fleck for bringing new life to the area with the living wall.

AL UMN I ASSO C IATIO N N E WS Alumni Board Announces New Initiatives for 2024-25 The Cathedral High School Alumni Association is excited to announce new initiatives to foster lifelong connections. The Alumni Association is planning alumni gatherings in other cities, similar to events held in Indianapolis over the past year. "We are excited to announce that the goal is to get alumni in other states reengaged with Cathedral, try to capture the spirit of being a proud alumnus, and bring people together for networking opportunities,” says Alumni Board Chair Brittany Hizer '00. "It's really a chance for connection, especially if returning to Indianapolis isn't as easy for some."

Last summer, the Alumni Association Board initiated a series of successful networking events. The Board started with a lively happy hour at Half Liter on June 13, followed by a fun-filled Family Day at Victory Field in July, with a great turnout of more than 50 attendees.

The Coffee Hour on November 21, hosted at Cathedral's Johnny Mac Coffeehouse, was also a hit.

High school is a formative time that shapes our lives, and at Cathedral, educators transform hearts and minds. "Engaging with Cathedral over the past 25 years has allowed me to maintain a connection to that time and to the people and experiences that shaped who I am today," Hizer says. "It's been a source of personal fulfillment, whether through attending reunions, joining alumni groups, or participating in school events. These connections have also kept me more closely tied to my Catholic faith. So, by engaging with Cathedral, you're not just reconnecting with your past, but also enriching your present and future."

The Alumni Board recently hosted another event at an Indians game last month and an Indy Eleven game event is scheduled for October 5—mark your calendars!

The Alumni Board collaborated with the Cathedral choirs for Breakfast with Santa on December 9 and saw more than 500 guests for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 30. Cathedral graduates are encouraged to join other alumni for the ShamrAuction every February and All Out Irish Day of Giving.

In addition, the Alumni Networking Series took a bite

"By reconnecting with former classmates and other alumni, you can build valuable personal and professional connections. Alumni engagement often extends to giving back to the school community through donations, volunteering, or mentoring programs. This not only supports current students but also ensures the continued success of Cathedral."

Grotto Groundbreaking Cathedral High School was blessed to break ground on our grotto on Monday, May 13. Thanks to the generosity of Ryan Hasbrook '92 (back row, far left), the Cathedral family will have a beautiful place to pray and reflect.

The grotto will be located on the west side of the practice football/lacrosse field. Construction has begun and should be completed early this fall.

Many members of the Hasbrook family were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony. It was a beautiful afternoon in so many ways.

HOLY CROSS UPDATES CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL - PROUD TO BE HOLY CROSS! The Brothers of Holy Cross opened the doors of Cathedral on Friday, September 13, 1918. Classes began with 90 freshmen and sophomores at 13th and Pennsylvania.

Cathedral's reputation for academic rigor and athletic excellence grew quickly, as did enrollment. After a series of temporary quarters, Cathedral moved to 14th and Meridian (the current home of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis).

In 1964, the Brothers of Holy Cross purchased Cathedral, and all was well until Catholic school enrollment declined in the early 1970s. In 1972, the decision was made to close Cathedral. A group of parents, alumni, and friends rescued Cathedral by forming a non-profit organization to take over the school.

In 1976, the Cathedral trustees moved their school to the former Ladywood/St. Agnes site at 56th and Emerson.

That same year, Cathedral became co-ed.

On September 13, 2011, Cathedral re-affiliated with the Brothers of Holy Cross.

Since that time, Cathedral has become a leader in Holy Cross education. We have become very intentional in teaching our Holy Cross values, starting when ninthgraders come on campus for Lughnasa, their freshmen orientation.

Our educators are very purposeful incorporating our Holy Cross language. Each junior and senior is responsible for completing a St. Br. André Service Project. St. Br. André is the first saint of the Congregation of Holy Cross. The rising senior class chooses a Holy Cross theme for the year. Our English teachers then select summer reading books that focus on our Holy Cross theme.

Our campus signage, updated in 2018, highlights our Holy Cross values. Our Holy Cross Council ensures we celebrate these values throughout the year.

Our reputation is such that the Midwest Province of Holy Cross Priests and Brothers selected Cathedral to

host priests and brothers to teach and minister to our students and community. Cathedral has been proud to host Holy Cross school leaders from around the world this year. Last fall, we hosted five global school leaders for a visit, and the seeds were planted for this spring, when we were asked to lead the first-ever Holy Cross Global Symposium. At the event, Holy Cross leaders from around the world gathered to talk about living out the Holy Cross values, giving school leaders a chance to learn from one another. Much good has been accomplished since we re-affiliated with Holy Cross 13 years ago.

We are proud of our roots and remain humbly committed to being a leader in Holy Cross education.

2023 - Cathedral hires two Holy Cross Priests and one Holy Cross Brother. The Midwest Province donates a statue of St. Br. André to Cathedral.

2024 - Cathedral leads first-ever Holy Cross Global Symposium at Holy Cross College.

We are not sure what will happen next, but we do know that we will be full of zeal and passion to continue our faithful work.

HOLY CROSS UPDATES In March, Cathedral was blessed to dedicate our Holy Cross College classroom. Several representatives from Holy Cross College, Cathedral board members, alumni, and educators were there for the celebration.

Holy Cross President Dr. Marco Clark commented how Cathedral is one of the most Holy Cross schools he's visited. “From the walls to the signage and, most importantly, through your people, there is no doubt Cathedral is a Holy Cross school.” As with all Holy Cross schools, we have much hope to bring! This Easter was an extra memorable holiday for several members of our Cathedral family. Father Eric Augustine '96 baptized, confirmed, and gave First Communion to Jack Schneider '24 at Nativity Catholic Church (left photo). His sponsor was Cathedral educator Cole Hepp. Also entering into Full Communion with the Catholic Church during the Easter Vigil at St. Louis de Montfort was Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Jason Delaney (center photo, pictured left). His sponsor was Cathedral parent Billy Finn. Also joining the Church this Easter was Cathedral's Technology Helpdesk Technician Daniel Tandoc. Daniel is standing between his wife and cousin in the photo on the right. This is another example of how we live out our Holy Cross mission to educate hearts and minds. Congratulations to our newest members of the Catholic Church!

SPRING MUSICAL - “BIG FISH” Congratulations to the cast, crew, and directors, Jordan Fox and Michael Moffatt, of our spring musical, “Big Fish.” The show was a huge splash!

Musicians Earn Gold!

Strike up the band, and the band struck gold!! Please join us in congratulating seven of our outstanding musicians for doing so well at the State ISSMA contest. Our students earned seven gold medals and one silver. SINGING THEIR PRAISES Sensational Show Choir Season Greatness is calling, and our Show Choir program is answering in new and exciting ways! Our phenomenal Director of Choirs Marian Bender formed a new middle school choir called “Lucky Charms.” This fifth-through-eighth-grade group of talented young performers represents more than 10 schools in the Indianapolis area. They only rehearse once a week, and yet placed fourth in their competition this year! We are so proud of them.

At the Heart of America National Show Choir Competition in Nashville, our mixed show choir, Adrenaline Rush, won Grand Champion in the Open Division with Best Vocals and Best Visuals! 56th Street Singers received first runner-up in the Concert Choir Division. After an undefeated regular season, Irish Adrenaline placed fourth in the large Uni-Voice Division after a breathtaking performance! Congratulations to all of the performers, Mrs. Bender, Assistant Jordan Fox, and the entire staff! This show choir season was in perfect harmony!

Speech and Debate Wins State!

Congratulations to Cathedral's Speech and Debate Team on winning State in World School Debate! As Highlights was going to print, several of our debaters were competing at Nationals. We'll have results in the Fall/Winter issue of the publication. Leading our award-winning team are Coach Jeanne Malone and Assistant Coaches Lainey Adams and Chris Gray.

French Competition Success Congratulations to the 18 Cathedral High School students who competed in the State French Competition (Congrès) in Franklin. The students brought home 51 certificates for placing first through fourth. Cathedral students received 20 first-place awards. Chloe Shadiow '25 was awarded the “Bob Berry” creative arts plaque. This year's poster theme was “Impressionnisme.” Chloe's first place poster was judged best overall. Joining our students in the photo is World Language educator, Gary Spurgin.

JOYFUL J-TERM

J-Term, which took place over two weeks in early January, allows sophomores through seniors to explore interests outside their usual coursework. It also gives our innovative educators an opportunity to share their talents and interests outside their regular classes. Some of our students even did internships. Ethan Trobridge '24 (pictured top right) interned for the Holy Cross Brothers in the archives of the Midwest Province. The Brothers were so impressed with Ethan's work ethic and research skills they offered him a job after he graduates from Cathedral and moves to South Bend to attend Holy Cross College!

A group of students and educators traveled to France and Spain, with an opportunity for the students to earn college credit. Another group did service work in Costa Rica. Other J-Term opportunities included hiking, fitness training, ceramics, and sewing. Students interested in early childhood education got the chance to work in Irish Blessings, Cathedral's own on-campus Early Childhood Education Center. Our freshmen enjoyed the Freshmen J-Term Experience, where they learned about our Holy Cross roots, study skills, and the importance of caring for their physical and mental health. Thank you to our fabulous educators who ensured our students enjoyed an amazing and transformative J-Term.

GLENDYS MOOSBRUGGER VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD The Glendys Moosbrugger Volunteer Service Award is given to adult volunteers who demonstrate service dedication, enthusiasm, and passion for Cathedral. We were proud to recognize Chris Gray, Mark Cline '84, and Ann Morrell for their outstanding service to Cathedral!

Chris Gray (pictured left) has been an active member of the Cathedral family for more than 10 years. Every time help is needed, she steps up! Most of the time you would never know she is there, as she works hard behind the scenes. In addition to volunteering for many events, she helps our award-winning Speech and Debate Team. Her son, Nick Gray '16, is a Cathedral graduate.

Mark Cline '84 is a Cathedral graduate, father, and voice of the Lady Irish Soccer team. His official capacity as a volunteer has spanned more than 10 years through his involvement as an Irish Parent Ambassador, a supporter

of Cathedral's Centennial Campaign, and Circle of Excellence committee member. His advocacy for Cathedral is part of who he is, with some dubbing him the “Mayor of Cathedral.” He and his wife, Colleen (Spellacy '83), are proud parents of Emily Cline '15, Matt Cline '18, Caroline Cline '21, and Catherine Cline '24.

Ann Morrell (pictured right) has been a Cathedral supporter for the past eight years. She has contributed her countless volunteer hours throughout the building. She has assisted the Admissions Office as a Parent Ambassador and Open House volunteer coordinator. Her presence in the Mother's Club is tremendous in co-leading the annual Educator Appreciation Luncheon. She has also helped with the ShamrAuction Committee and the Advancement Team.

Ann and her husband, Jeff, are the proud parents of Kayla Morrell '20 and Julia Morrell '24.

Easter Egg Hunt The Autajay family had an egg-cellent time at the Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the Cathedral High School Alumni Association. More than 500 guests hopped over to Cathedral for this annual event!

Shamrock Scholars grantors chose to provide tuition assistance scholarships for students during their time at Cathedral. A highlight of the day was lunch, when students could purchase $1 tickets to throw a pie at an educator. All the funds raised during the Day of Giving will go toward the Cathedral Fund to support students and educators. Go Irish!

CATHEDRAL WINS COVETED NFF HATCHELL CUP Named Top Football Team in the Nation The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced that Cathedral High School has been named the 2023-24 recipient of the NFF Hatchell Cup! The award recognizes the Fighting Irish as the top high school football team in the nation for excellence in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. Of the 163 players on the football roster, 142 made the honor roll during the first quarter of the year, and 20 of the 30 seniors qualified for the Indiana Football Coaches Association Academic All-State Team. Eleven seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society, and the team boasted 57 players who enrolled in advanced placement classes. Cathedral football earned backto-back accolades as NFF 6A Indiana winner of the NFF National High School Academic Excellence Award. Cathedral Athletic Director Rick Streiff and Varsity Head Football Coach Bill Peebles '88 accepted the award this spring during our All Out Irish Day of Giving.

Cathedral Partners with Franciscan Health Cathedral High School proudly announces our new School Health Partnership with Franciscan Health. The Franciscan Alliance healthcare ministry began in Lafayette in 1875. Today, it is one of the largest Catholic healthcare systems in the Midwest, with 12 hospital campuses in Indiana and Illinois.

Franciscan Alliance provides sports medicine and athletic training services to more than 40 high schools in Indiana.

Franciscan Health Sports Medicine is a leader in the sports medicine field, led by physician specialists and surgeons specially trained to treat sports-related injuries. Franciscan will be providing a range of health services for our students, including sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and a school nurse.

Our new School Health Partnership with Franciscan Health will provide our students with an atmosphere of caring and support for Cathedral High School's Catholic values.

Through this new partnership, we believe we can positively impact the health and wellness of our students and families at Cathedral High School.

SPORTS WRAPS Basketball – Boys Baseball

They fought, scrapped, and improved as the season continued.

Cathedral High School baseball had memorable moments in a gutty season in 2024, one that ended in typical Irish fashion: A run to the sectional title – and beyond.

They grew up in a big way and did so in difficult circumstances.

The Irish gained big-time experience along the way.

Cathedral High School boys basketball also won a lot of big games and maintained its status among Indiana's elite teams – and that made 2023-24 an important season for the Irish.

The Irish, long one of the top high school baseball programs in Indiana, proved deserving of that status yet again in 2024. They finished the regular season 13-11, then advanced to the Class 4A Section 10 title game with an 8-0 semifinal victory over Lawrence Central.

The program's goals are high every year, and the Irish continued reaching them in 2023-24.

They then won the sectional title with a dramatic, thrilling, back-and-forth 11-8 victory over Lawrence North at Lawrence North on Memorial Day.

The Irish, in Delaney's eighth season as head coach, finished the 2023-24 season 18-6. They lost in the Class 4A Section 10 championship game, 75-61, to Lawrence North. They also finished as the runner-up in the City Tournament.

“In my 20 years being a head coach, this is one of my favorite teams,” Jason Delaney said.

Basketball – Girls

This was a solid step forward, and the step came with a young team.

That step was a positive sign for Cathedral High School girls basketball, with the 2023-24 season a year of improvement in what Head Coach Lisa Finn said was a season of transition.

Youth was served, and it was served in encouraging fashion.

“I really enjoyed this group,” Finn said.

Irish girls basketball in 2023-24 finished 12-12, turning in strong showings against multiple strong teams. The Irish in 2023-24 were led by strong senior leaders: forward Taylor Lewis, who has signed with Villanova to play volleyball, and guard/forward Catherine Cline, who has signed with Loyola University Chicago to play soccer.

“It's been phenomenal,” Jim Grossi said.

The Irish, in Grossi's first season as head coach, turned in a strong regular season. They finished second in the City Tournament to a strong Heritage Christian team, a team they were to compete against again as the teams opened the postseason in the Section 17 tournament at Maple Creek Golf Club.

Cheerleading

Another year, another step forward for Cathedral cheerleading.

Irish cheerleading had what Jessica Long '02 Stoner considered yet another successful season in 2023-24, success marked by a strong competitive showing and a continued dedication to the program's primary philosophies and goals.

That made it a year for growth in memorable fashion.

“We're continuing the positive things, which is what we want,” Stoner, in her third season as Irish cheerleading coach, said.

Irish cheerleading in 2023-24 featured 36 members – the largest team in Stoner's tenure – with a strong class of 15 freshmen that figures to be the foundation for the future.

Bowling

This was a memorable year, a year of progress.

Cathedral High School bowling turned in solid boys and girls seasons in 2023-24, with the boys turning in yet another competitive season and the girls turning in a remarkably successful season.

“The girls probably had their best season ever in the history of Cathedral bowling,” Irish boys and girls bowling coach Mark Noe said.

Key to that season: freshman Grace Zuerner, who had a standout season to lead the Irish girls bowling to third place finishes in the Indianapolis East Conference and sectional tournaments.

Golf

This was a good season, an enjoyable season.

Cathedral High School boys golf's goal was to parlay that into a solid postseason, one in which the program would prove yet again it ranks as an area power and state contender.

The Irish did just that, finishing 16th in the state.

“We came really close to getting in the round of regional,” Noe said of the girls.

Zuerner rolled the state's second-highest game of the season – 276 – and also turned in the second-highest series of the season and was one of the top bowlers in the sectional.

“Her potential is out of this world,” Noe said. “She's a great kid, a great bowler.”

Irish boys bowling was a young team in 2023-24 that finished fifth out of 10 teams in the conference, with junior Alex Jones turning in a strong postseason and advancing to the semi-state round.

That was the goal, and the goal was achieved.

“There's a lot of determination,” Irish boys lacrosse coach Andy Gruber said early in the 2024 season.

The Irish, long one of the top high school boys lacrosse programs in Indiana and the Midwest, turned in a strong season in 2024 – a turnaround season in which they started the season 10-2 and moved to No. 1 in the state in Class 2A by late April.

Lacrosse – Girls

They finished strong, and that was good.

They finished the season 14-7, beating Zionsville 13-5 early in the postseason. They then lost, 13-8, to Hamilton Southeastern in the state semifinal on May 25.

The overall season was strong and good, too – which made 2024 positive for Cathedral High School girls lacrosse.

“This was a fun group,” Coach Mary Ann White '11 said.

White, in her seventh season as Irish girls lacrosse coach, said the team was led by a strong senior class that formed the program's core in recent seasons.

“They're going to leave massive holes,” White said. “We also, though, have a lot of underclassmen who have stepped up to the challenge, who were preparing to take some of those spots that are going to be left by the seniors.”

The Irish went 9-6-1 in 2024, finishing the season with a 17-7 loss to No. 2-ranked Carmel.

Hockey

Call this a solid season overall.

The Central Indiana Knights improved as the 2023-24 season continued, turning in a successful postseason.

They were close to being even better than that.

Under the circumstances, those were big positives.

“I thought we did really well,” Knights coach Rob Pozzebon said.

Lacrosse – Boys

This was a season of redemption and satisfaction.

That made the 2024 season important for Cathedral High School boys lacrosse as the program turned in a successful

The Knights – a high school hockey team of players from Cathedral, Noblesville, Guerin, Fishers, Park Tudor, Hamilton Southeastern, and Bishop Chatard – qualified for the postseason in Class 3A in 2023-24. That's the state's second-highest classification, with Indiana high school hockey teams earning their postseason classification with regular-season results.

The Knights made the semifinal round of the Class 3A state tournament after entering as the eighth seed. The Cathedral players on the team were Jack Bedich (Most Valuable Player), Grant Goodburn, Charles McCormick, and Joe Konesco (Leading Scorer).

That made 2023-24 memorable and satisfying.

“A great year,” Irish swimming coach Megan Ahnert called it.

Rugby

A foundation has been established. A bright future may now be at hand.

The Royal Irish Rugby Society, after a season retooling and revitalizing a proud program, has moved closer to reestablishing its place among the best high school rugby teams in Indiana and the nation.

Irish boys swimming 2023-24 turned in strong secondplace showings in the City Meet and Schools with No Pools Meet. The program finished the season with a fourth-place finish at the Section 14 Meet at Lawrence North with 212 points – behind sectional champion North Central's 454 points.

Ahnert said all varsity swimmers advanced to the sectional finals, with all posting personal best times in their events.

That was the goal entering 2024 and that objective has been reached.

“This year is absolutely a rebuilding year,” Coach Brian Hannon said.

The Royal Irish, a team made up of players from Cathedral and Bishop Chatard, had its numbers dip in 2023. Hannon, who attended Chatard and played for the Royal Irish – and who was the head rugby coach at the University of Texas for two years – took over as head coach in January 2024.

Swimming – Girls

This was an exciting season for Cathedral High School girls swimming.

The present was encouraging, which makes the future bright – and which made 2023-24 a season of accomplishment for the Irish program.

“We were really happy with this season,” Irish boys and girls swimming coach Megan Ahnert said.

Swimming – Boys

Improvement was made, and it was real.

Cathedral High School boys swimming therefore had a successful season in 2023-24, with a young team turning 34

Irish girls swimming in 2024 finished fifth at the Section 14 Meet at Lawrence North with 188 points, with Franklin Central winning the meet with 487 points. The Irish finished second in the City Meet and third at the Schools with No Pools Meet in addition to winning a dual meet against Lebanon.

“The girls had a lot of great meets,” Ahnert said.

Cathedral girls swimming in 2023-24 were led by a senior class that featured strong leadership, as well as a strong sophomore class that should form the program's core moving forward.

Track and Field – Boys

This was a strong group, and an experienced group.

That often means strong seasons in boys track and field, and the Cathedral High School 2024 boys indeed turned in a solid season.

The Irish boys in 2024 fielded a team with more than 80 athletes – and one that turned in strong performances throughout the season and postseason.

“We're blessed to have all these kids,” Irish track and field coach John O'Hara '02 said.

The 2024 Irish boys track and field team qualified the 4x100 relay team for the Indiana High School Athletic Association state meet. The team, senior Alex Richards, junior Albren Johnson, junior Devaughn Slaughter, and freshman Xavier Dangerfield, placed fourth at state, the highest finish in school history! Congratulations to an outstanding team!

“When you graduate some amazing talent like we have the last few years with state champions and state-title contenders, you wait for the next group to just naturally step up, and that's what they have done,” O'Hara said.

Tennis – Girls

This was a season to remember.

Track and Field – Girls

A tradition continued, and that was a positive.

Cathedral High School girls track, which has emerged as one of Indiana's most consistent programs in recent seasons, continued to be just that in 2024.

It was an experienced, balanced group with a mix of youth.

“We have a lot of young talent, and a strong senior class,” Irish track and field coach John O'Hara '02 said.

The Irish in 2024 qualified two athletes for the state

Cathedral High School girls tennis in 2024 turned in a successful regular season, following that with a thrilling postseason run.

It was a fitting, exciting finish for the high school careers of a special group.

“We really stepped up big,” Jeff Giles said.

Giles, in his third season as the Irish's tennis coach, was referring to a highlight match of a memorable postseason: a 3-2 victory over rival and perennial power North Central that gave the Irish the regional championship.

“We got all three single spots,” Giles said. “It was an amazing match. North Central's facility has been under construction for a few years. They have that new facility, and the SPRING/SUMMER fans always come2024 out CATHEDRAL in droves." HIGHLIGHTS 35

“I thought we put together our best team when the sectional came around,” Irish wrestling coach Sean McGinley '88 said.

The Irish, after pushing through injuries at several weight classes, peaked late in the season and turned in a strong postseason that finished with a ninth-place finish at the Indiana High School Athletic Association 2024 state finals.

Softball

Irish softball turned in yet another memorable season in 2024.

The latest step for a program that steadily has progressed toward becoming one of the state's best over the last decade.

“It's a solid team we have,” Tony Matthews said.

The Irish, in Matthews' 11th season as head coach, turned in a sterling record in 2024. They entered the postseason 23-3, winning the City Championship before winning the Class 4A Section 10 title with a 24-6 victory over Lawrence North.

The Irish, who lost in the regional round to New Palestine, opened the season with seven consecutive victories, then won 11 consecutive more games. They won five more consecutive games before their season-ending loss.

The Irish were defined throughout the season not only by a talented group of elite players, but by a determination to be among the state's best.

Volleyball – Boys

The Irish are back where they belong, and that's fitting.

Cathedral High School boys volleyball in 2024 continued re-establishing itself as one of the state of Indiana's elite programs in its sport.

A state final appearance provided a memorable ending.

“We definitely put ourselves in that top tier and consideration for that top spot,” Cathedral boys volleyball coach Tyler McClure '08 said.

Wrestling

This was a difficult season at times, and a satisfying one.

Cathedral High School wrestling in 2023-24 maximized its potential, earning its way into a familiar place among the state's elite programs.

The Irish (28-4), after finishing No. 3 in the regularseason Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association rankings in McClure's fourth season as coach, reached the state final in 2024. Below is his Jubilee Biography. God bless you, Brother Doug!

Wow, 92 years old, 70 years in the Congregation of Holy Cross. Never in my wildest imagination did I ever expect God wanting me on this planet this long. Perhaps I am a slow learner and have not grasped or achieved what God has been trying to tell me. Whatever the case might be, the journey has had its highs and lows, its ups and downs, all in the context of learning who I am and what impact society, church, and Holy Cross have had on me.

I have lived through 16 presidents, have witnessed United States involvement in 22 wars, and have watched eight Superior Generals and their councils guide the Congregation in its ongoing evolution. All of these events have afforded me personal growth and left me absolutely convinced that life is truly a mystery.

My formative years with my family, schooling, church, and society gave me the foundation that I needed in order to ground myself in the values and principles of life that ended up steering me in a direction to eventually joining the Congregation.

I entered Holy Cross prior to Vatican II, and in a single province of Brothers which covered the United States.

In 1956, I began teaching on the high school level.

The summer months, for a number of years, were a return to university studies. As the years went on, the community either assigned or requested of me to undertake various positions in the schools and in the province. I often wondered if I was part of the “peter principle” (i.e., moving folks around until a level of incompetency is achieved and then leaving them there.)

Through these various ministries, I have learned much about myself. Working with God's people of all ages and in various circumstances has brought me great growth and inspiration. I would not trade off in a million years what I have learned and appreciated from others.

After 70 years in the Congregation, I want to express my gratitude to the many Holy Cross Brothers, Priests and Sisters for their friendship, support, kindness, and tolerance. We are truly a very unique Congregation.

My congratulations to the other jubilarians.
