Autumn’s rolling in, and York’s buzzing with fresh arrivals and exciting openings. In September and October we take you from riverside revamps to taproom treasures, with plenty of new happenings to explore across the city and beyond. You can sip craft beer in Fulford at Brewhemian Hopsody, browse stylish goods at
YO10 4JX
A new addition to Fulford’s food and drink scene, Brewhemian Hopsody is a taproom and bottle shop offering a wide range of craft beers. Housed in the former Lodge Cottage Farm Shop, the relaxed space offers cosy indoor seating and a cute beer garden to drink in rotating guest taps from great independent brewers.
Oliver Bonas’ new home in King’s Square, or discover the gothic charm of Coven of Curiosity on Petergate. And there’s a whole world of new places to check out - with Japanese dining at Hatsu to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Gracie Barra, York’s latest additions are as diverse as they are delightful. Read on to find out more about what’s new in York this season.

Brew York has opened a taproom on the Carlton Towers Estate, serving up 16 lines of craft beer alongside regular street food pop-ups. A halfhour journey from the city arrives at this lovely rural setting which is dogfriendly and already drawing visitors from across the region.
YO1 8BH
Oliver Bonas has moved into King’s Square, replacing its former location on Stonegate. The new store has had a bespoke interior fit-out that reflects the brand’s distinctive style while complementing the building’s heritage features - and the larger space means a wider range of fashion, homeware, and gifts to browse.
YO24 1BN
Following a major refurbishment, Ibis Styles York Centre has reopened with 16 additional rooms and a refreshed interior. The redesign combines playful design with practical comfort, and nods to the building’s brewing heritage at their new bar and restaurant.
YO1 9QL
Taking over the riverside site previously occupied by Pitcher & Piano, Katie O’Brien’s brings an Irish pub vibe to Coney Street. With regular live music and a revamped outdoor area, it’s already becoming a lively fixture in York’s nightlife.
A Japanese restaurant is set to open at 71 Petergate, in a building that’s been empty for three years. With an exceptional eye for detail and room for tatami seating, Hatsu promises authentic cuisine in a historic setting; a fresh new addition to York’s strong dining scene.
Rock Garden Ceramics make hand-thrown tableware for kitchens, inspired by Yorkshire’s crags and woodlands. You can now explore and purchase new work, past collections, and a curated selection of pieces by local artists at their micro studio gallery on Scarcroft Road. Alongside the art and craft, you can also enjoy speciality coffee served in their own ceramics.
Gracie Barra has launched a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy at Arabesque House, Monks Cross, adding to their established Harrogate and Apperley Bridge academies. With classes for all ages and skill levels, this welcoming space is part of a growing martial arts community in the city.

Cumberland House, a Grade I-listed mansion on King’s Staith, is set to become a new riverside restaurant. The grand building, which dates back to 1710, has been vacant for years and will now be restored by the team behind Lil’s Bar and Bistro, who aim to preserve the historic character while bringing the impressive space back into public use.
Coven of Curiosity has opened on High Petergate, offering gothic homeware and gifts, handmade ghosts and spell jars. The shop dedicated to the magical arts is run by a local Wiccan as a haven for Witches, Pagans and the curious; an enchantingly unique addition to York’s independent retail scene.
Victoria Robinson opened V’s Artisan Kitchen in July this year. She tells us the story behind her delicious Gillygate bakery - where Yorkshire meets Greece.
I grew up in Athens, Greece in a big family, and food has always been very important to us, bringing everyone together. I've always spent a lot of time with my yiayia (grandma), who taught me much of what I know; some of her recipes have made it into what I sell at V’s now. I moved to the UK for university almost 25 years ago. Here I found my husband, a proper Yorkshireman, who I’ve been married to for over 20 years and we have 2 children. Since then I worked in catering, but always wanted my own business where I could share the food I loved to make at home.
Around 2017 the idea of selling savoury pies came about, and we started weekly in Shambles Market, as well as at various food festivals and farmers markets around Yorkshire. In 2018 we won multiple awards at the British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray, including Best Cold Savoury Pie against some giant supermarket brands. From this, we were able to open a small cafe-bistro in Leeds. Unfortunately, COVID affected us like everyone else and we closed in 2020. The opportunity to open my own place in York was something I could not pass up, and together with my husband and kids, we took over and renovated what is now V's Artisan Kitchen.
I also take a lot of pride in making Greek sweets such as Melomakarona (Honey Cookies), and Greek savouries like everyone's favourite Spanakopita (Spinach & Feta Pie). One of the best sellers in York has definitely been the Cinnamon Buns, selling out almost every morning which means I need to make a whole new batch that proves every night ready to be baked the next morning.
V's Artisan Kitchen is a blend of Yorkshire and Greek pies, bakes and drinks. I want to share traditional Greek foods with people here in the UK, but also make the pies and rolls that I’ve created over the years. One of the favourite bakes from my pie company was our massive pork rolls, and I wanted to bring these to V's. They’re made with local pork mince, and as well as our original roll, have all sorts of flavours such as caramelised onion, chorizo, apple and chilli.
I've always loved feeding people, and sharing the food that I eat at home and make for my family is what I want to do - there’s nothing I sell here that I wouldn't give to my kids or husband. Everything is handmade because that's how I do it, so things can be wonky here and there, but it’s a part of what makes it unique!
When you walk into my bakery, I don't want you to feel like a customer, but like a guest in my home. I’m in the kitchen all morning and all day sometimes, so there is always the smell of fresh bakes when you walk in. Everything in the displays is made fresh daily so that it’s the best quality I can offer. I try to source as much as we can locally, like our meat from M&K Butchers on Bishopthorpe Road, and our coffee freshly roasted in Malton by Roost. I don't like waste, and so I try to give anything left at the end of the day to the homeless shelter down the road.
The response has been incredible so far, from locals to tourists. Everyone I’ve had the pleasure of serving has been so lovely, and it’s been great to see familiar faces coming back for their daily coffee and lunches. I’m very thankful to the other traders on Gillygate who have all been so welcoming and supportive as we've started up. Everyone is welcome to sit and have a coffee and a chat any time.
If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise. Because west of the city, near the village of Knapton, something extraordinary is taking root. With thanks to Cllr Paula Widdowson for the insight, here’s what’s going down at York Community Woodland.
York Community Woodland is more than a new green space - it’s a symbol of York’s commitment to sustainability and community. The idea began with a simple pledge: plant 20,000 trees. But that promise quickly grew into something much bigger. Thanks to a timely opportunity to purchase farmland on the outskirts of York, the city was able to plant one tree for every resident - over 210,000 in total!
Developed and managed by Forestry England, the woodland is designed to deliver on three key goals: increasing access to green space, boosting biodiversity, and making a meaningful contribution to reducing York’s carbon footprint. But it’s not just about trees - it’s about creating a space that belongs to everyone.
The project has brought together a wide range of partners, including City of York Council, White Rose Forest, Rufforth & Knapton Parish Council, local schools, and residents. It’s a collaborative effort that invites ongoing involvement from the community, whether through volunteering, education, or simply enjoying the space.
Visiting the woodland, you’ll find open meadows, young trees protected by wildlife-friendly fencing, and a growing number of features to engage and inspire. Plans are underway for sensory gardens, a forest school, and interactive experiences for children. Already, the site is home to wildflower meadows and peaceful walking routes, offering a tranquil escape just minutes from the city.
The woodland also plays a vital role in supporting local wildlife. By creating new habitats for nature to thrive, it helps protect biodiversity and reconnect ecosystems - building an environment that’s great for wellbeing and essential for the planet.
And while the trees are still young, the vision is long-term. York Community Woodland is designed to grow with the city, becoming a lasting legacy for future generations. It’s a place for learning, reflection, recreation, and connection - an example of what can be achieved when a city puts nature at the heart of its planning.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet walk, a family day out, or a chance to get involved in something meaningful, York Community Woodland offers space to breathe, explore, and grow.

Seventeen years ago, Haxby Bakehouse began life in the back of a deli in Haxby, quietly crafting loaves with care and conviction. Today, the bakery has grown into two thriving hubs - on Auster Road, Clifton Moor and The Village, Haxby - complete with a café, pastry counter, and a loyal following who know which way their bread is baked.
Throughout their journey, the ethos hasn’t changed; it’s all about baking quality bread, with a deep respect for where the ingredients come from. Phil Clayton, the Haxby Baker, tells us more; “We have always focused on making ‘real’ bread. No additives, no improvers, always flour. The quality of the flour plays a central role as the main ingredient in the bread.”
That commitment to quality has led to long-standing relationships with local millers; with J Stringer & Sons at High Callis in the Yorkshire Wolds, and with Side Oven at Carr House Farm in Foston on the Wolds. The flour from these Driffield millers are used in specific bakes by Haxby, and especially chosen for their heritage and spelt flours respectively.
Another important relationship has been rising through the years too; “I met Yorkshire Organic Millers (YOM) at York Food Festival 15 years ago, then we started using their organic flour. It must be one of the longest standing relationships - almost as long as we’ve been in business!” Phil continues; “We work closely with Philip and Nellie (YOM’s original owners) and Rob and Maygan (YOM’s new owners). Nellie used to drive down with a van full of flour, and we'd unload it all. Philip still comes with a trailer and launches the flour out. When Rob comes, we make him work really hard, haha!”
Yorkshire Organic Millers stoneground flour remains a staple at Haxby Bakehouse. It’s used in their autumn honey loaf (served at The Black Swan Oldstead), cedar malted and Yorkshire brown loaves, and their Pain De Levain. “One of the great things about their flour is it's very consistent,” says Phil. “It’s a really nice, creamy flour with more flavour to it than refined flour.” And, unlike highly refined flours, which lose nutrients and require additives by law, it retains its vitamins and minerals for a nutritious bake.
Haxby Bakehouse maintain their sustainable way of working through all aspects of the business - from sourcing local honey at Dudley Hill Farm to dealing with York social enterprise group Food Circle CIC. It’s a simple chain that tells a bigger story, celebrating traditional methods and local producers. Farm, mill, bake. Where quality organic ingredients meet expert makers to create something special. Or, as Phil perfectly concludes; “If you're using rubbish flour, you're not gonna make great bread.”

Last year, a unique new art gallery opened in the centre of York. Having already showcased many great artists and with more exciting upcoming exhibitions, Stephenson’s Gallery has established itself as a key addition to York’s cultural scene. Mark Stephenson tells us all about it.
Our journey began in Cambridge in 2007, where we founded EE Fine Art. My wife Louise and I shared a passion for the rich and diverse art of Eastern Europe. We spent years building the gallery and curating a collection that celebrated the unique perspectives and cultures of the region. After many successful years, we decided to embark on a new chapter. The historic and vibrant city of York was the perfect place for us to expand our horizons, so we made the move in 2024 and rebranded as Stephenson's Gallery.
We're inspired by the legacy of art and the powerful stories it can tell. Our influences are rooted in our passion for the unique perspectives of Eastern European artists and the captivating, often rugged beauty of Northern art. We're driven by the desire to bring high-quality, thoughtprovoking pieces to a wider audience and to create a welcoming space where people can discover art they truly love.
Stephenson's Gallery is located in a stunning new space in the heart of York. While our roots are in Eastern European art, we are now excited to showcase a wider range of artistic expressions, including a new focus on captivating Northern art. Our mission is to curate a diverse collection that inspires and enriches lives. We strive to connect art enthusiasts with exceptional pieces that resonate with their individual tastes and sensibilities.
Visitors can expect an immersive and engaging experience. Our team, led by Louise and me, is dedicated to providing personalised guidance and expertise. We encourage people to take their time, explore the diverse collection, and discover something that truly speaks to them. It's a place to not only see art but to learn the stories behind it and connect with the artists' visions.
The response from the York community has been incredibly positive and welcoming. We’ve been thrilled by the genuine interest in our collection and the support we've received since opening our doors. It’s a privilege to be a part of York’s thriving cultural scene. We are thrilled to be here in York and look forward to welcoming everyone to our gallery. Art has the power to inspire and enrich lives, and we can't wait to share our passion with the city's art lovers.
Bradford 2025 is a year-long celebration of the city and its wider district, taking place across its city, towns, villages and green spaces. As UK City of Culture, Bradford is hosting a programme that reflects its rich history and diverse contemporary culture - through dance, theatre, music, film, visual arts, food and sport. Created with and for the people of Bradford, with new commissions and projects shaped by their lives and ambitions, alongside major cultural events.
One of the highlights of the year is the Turner Prize 2025, which will be hosted at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery from 27 September 2025 to 22 February 2026. The exhibition will feature work by the four shortlisted artists: Nnena Kalu, Rene Matić, Mohammed Sami and Zadie Xa. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Bradford on 9 December.
The Turner Prize, established in 1984 and named after painter JMW Turner, is one of the world’s best-known prizes for the visual arts and regularly sparks public debate around new developments in contemporary British art. The prize is awarded annually to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or presentation of their work. This year’s shortlist spans sculpture, painting, photography and installation, with each artist offering a distinct approach.
Nnena Kalu creates hanging sculptural installations using cocoon-like forms wrapped in bold materials. Her work is rooted in repeated gestures and responds closely to architectural space.
Rene Matić combines photography, sound and installation to explore identity and belonging. Their work captures intimate moments and broader social concerns, reflecting the experiences of a younger generation.
Mohammed Sami paints haunting, depopulated scenes that evoke memory, war and exile. His large-scale canvases invite viewers to reflect on absence and trauma.
Zadie Xa blends painting, textiles and sound to explore folklore and ancestral memory. Her immersive installations draw on Korean shamanic traditions and the symbolism of the sea.

The exhibition is free to attend, with tickets available to book now. For many years, Fossgate has represented the beating heart of York’s independent scene. In the south of the city centre, the street effortlessly blends centuries of history with a vibrant, modern-day buzz - where Roman roads and medieval buildings meet artisan coffee shops, international restaurants and quirky boutiques.
Historically, Fossgate has always been a street of significance, beginning life as part of the Roman route out of Eboracum (Roman York). The name means ‘street leading to the River Foss’, which was declared a real street during the Viking era when a wooden bridge was built to connect Fossgate and Walmgate. Today, the adjoining Walmgate continues the positive vibes of Fossgate, equally lined with an array of great independent businesses.
Over the centuries, Fossgate has seen everything from cattle fairs and fish markets to the founding of Rowntree’s chocolate empire. Part of Fossgate’s history remains beautifully preserved at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, accessed via a narrow passageway off the street. Built in 1357, it’s one of the finest medieval guild halls in the world and still serves its original purpose today, whilst also offering coffee house comforts during a wonderful and unique visit.
Beyond the food and drink, the local creative energy of Fossgate continues into the shops here. Get clothes and gifts at York Designer Dress Agency and Give the Dog a Bone; get tattooed and pierced at White Rose and Silver Lining; and get your hair done at Cads, Niche and Westgate.
Epitomising Fossgate’s alternative charm is a hidden gem to delve into: the unique units of Franklins Yard house the likes of Blue Hairdressing, Mexican restaurant Batanga and Korean bistro Oshibi. Fossgate is York at its best: steeped in history, brimming with character, and proudly independent. Whether you're drawn by its past or its present, this charming street is well worth exploring.
In the 21st century, Fossgate has transformed into one of York’s most beloved indie quarters. Foodies can travel the world here - from a European tour of Ambiente, Marzano and Blue Barbakan, to an Asian exploration at Kalpakavadi, Everest Gurkha and Mumbai Lounge. Brunch, bakes, cheeses, coffees and more can be enjoyed at Remedy, Black Wheat Club, Kiosk, Rise, Gold, Le Specialty, The Speakcheesey and Spring Espresso. And drink in the evening at a crawl of eclectic bars: Fossgate Tap, Fossgate Social, Cosy Club, The Hop, The Stonebow and The Blue Bell - York’s smallest pub!
Marzano
In the last year, Marzano moved from their original site to a handsome new home in the Grade II listed Fossgate Bridge House. Here, they’ve created a warm and elegant space to indulge in an Italian dining experience. From classic pizzas, pastas and meats, to indulgent tiramisus, affogatos and gelatos, paired with exceptional Italian drinks, Marzano is an escape to Italy in the heart of York.

Since opening earlier this year, a new independent bistro & microbakery has quickly become a Fossgate favourite. Black Wheat Club brings beautiful brunch and bakes in the day before serving a dinner menu rooted in homecoming and honest, seasonal cooking. All made in-house and alongside a crafted wine list, Black Wheat Club is familiar, meaningful, creative and exciting.

There’s a lot happening in and around York this season, and we’ve rounded up the latest to keep you in the loop. From big ideas like an outdoor city pool and a new retirement village, to local wins of improved air quality and a £500K boost for our parks, the city’s evolving in various
Plans are being explored to open an outdoor pool in York, potentially bringing the city its closest beachstyle experience. The idea is part of the York Central redevelopment project, which will improve leisure facilities and offer more family-friendly outdoor spaces, with a unique city lido part of the exciting proposals.
positive ways. Celebrate the University of York’s national recognition and the community spirit of Acomb Library’s upgrade - plus supper clubs for singles and dogs at weddings, York’s got something for everyone! Here’s more of what’s going on in York.
A proposed development in Huntington could see a purpose-built retirement village on green belt land. The scheme includes 33 accessible homes and a community hub with a cafe, hairdresser, and healthcare rooms. The proposal aims to meet a growing need for older persons’ housing in York.
York couples can now include their dogs in their big day thanks to canine chaperone services. From greeting guests to joining photos, local dog lovers and new business Paws ‘N’ Promises have set up to help ensure pets are cared for and included in ceremonies without stress.
City of York Council is investing £500,000 into parks and green spaces. The funding will prioritise areas with ageing infrastructure and high deprivation, aiming to improve accessibility, play equipment, and biodiversity across up to 30 sites.
York has met national air pollution targets citywide for the first time. A 27% drop in nitrogen dioxide levels in areas like Gillygate and Bootham is credited to electric buses, anti-idling campaigns, and expanded EV infrastructure - as well as continued encouragement to walk and cycle in the city.
Acomb Explore Library is set for a major refurbishment, including a larger children’s area, improved café, better toilets, and new quiet study spaces. The funding comes from a mix of council and Arts Council grants, responding directly to community feedback and likely to benefit the local people and businesses.
Stephen Andrews, founder of Fish & Forest, has reached the semi-finals of the National Chef of the Year competition. His sustainable, seasonal cooking style has earned him national recognition and a place among the UK’s top 40 chefs competing for this prestigious professional culinary title, awarded in October.
York has a new way for single professionals to meet people beyond the dating apps. The Good Taste Club curates dining experiences in local restaurants that encourage natural conversation and good company, focussing on genuine real-life connections.
For the third year running, York has received an ‘A’ grade from the Carbon Disclosure Project for its climate leadership and transparency. The city’s efforts in sustainability and public engagement make them one of only 112 ‘A’ grade cities worldwide and continue to set a national example.
Gibsons, a prominent pub on Micklegate Bar, is reopening after a £550,000 refurbishment. Closed since 2019, the three storey Grade II listed venue owned by Star Pubs will feature a revamped interior and courtyard garden, and plans to be ready in October this year.
The University of York has been recognised by the Daily Mail University Guide for its commitment to public good. The award highlights the university’s role in enriching local and global communities; York is particularly celebrated for its Festival of Ideas, an annual two-week event that offers hundreds of free public events.
We’ve been championing all things cheese since 2015, with a hand-picked range of British and international cheeses, plus a carefully curated selection of wines, spirits, and accompaniments. Whether you're popping in for a wedge of something special, joining us for one of our tastings, or enjoying a glass in the garden, we’re all about making cheese fun, accessible, and delicious. Cheese can be the ultimate comfort food or at the other end of the cheesy spectrum – a real food challenge. I feel like the cheese tasting industry has gone alongside wine tastings which are quite stuffy, and we want to put our playful spin on things!
I have worked in catering since I left university over 10 years ago, and after a long shift there was nothing better than coming home, putting my feet up and tucking into a cheeseboard or cheese on toast. I started working for Love Cheese under the previous owner Harry Baines during covid; my wife was pregnant and my job at the time in wedding catering was obviously very quiet. After a few years we had a management buyout and I took over Love Cheese in 2022. Since then we have pushed the restaurant side of the business, and our Afternoon Cheese has become a very popular option for cheese lovers on a visit to York.
The Speakcheesey opened in July and is our take on a cheesefocused restaurant — a space where we can get playful with cheese in all its glorious forms. Inspired by the prohibition-era speakeasies but with a Love Cheese twist, it’s all about hidden gems and bold flavours. Our first Speakcheesey was a team effort during covid lockdowns to make a themed space just behind the shop, and our second site is now open on Fossgate. The new site has a small but ever changing menu so we can bring the best seasonal cheeses, small plates and toasties that incorporate staff favourites and unexpected combinations that work well.
This season at The Speakcheesey is all about over indulging, cheesey experimentation, and laid-back vibes. Expect some of your favourite cheesey classics — the OG toastie our Triple Cheese is staying on the menu — plus some new and more modern toasties and cheese on toasts. Plus lots of new bar snacks and light bites. Our licence is until 8pm, but why should cheese and wine only be for the evening? Come down for a day date or a long lunch. Our entire team are parents of young children and it’s a blessing to find somewhere child friendly where you can still enjoy decent ‘picky food’ and a glass of top notch wine. At The Speakcheesey you get just that; bold flavours, great drinks, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay for one more bite.
Finding a place that serves food like you’d get back home can make all the difference when you’re far from it. Whether it’s the comfort of a steaming bowl of noodles, the crunch of perfectly fried chicken, or the smell of something that reminds you of your mum’s cooking, there are homely eateries in York speaking your language. We asked some of York’s East Asian students where they feel at ease, eat well, and find a home from home.
Tucked away in St Sampson’s Square, Duck Shack is a no-frills spot that’s all about flavour. Specialising in Hong Kong-style charcoalroasted meats, the duck is tender, crispy, and full of depth. The vibe is more street food than sit down, which is all part of the charm – grab your meat, add some sides, and enjoy your new favourite meal.
14 St Sampson's Square, YO1 8RR
Thai Season brings the bold bright flavours of Thailand to three spots in York – at Shambles Market, on Bishopthorpe Road, and on the A1079. From chowing down on crispy chicken with sweet chilli sauce to sitting down to a fiery green curry, everything here is fresh and flavourful; both a comforting lunch and an evening treat.
Chef Lu’s is a hidden gem off Walmgate with a wide-ranging menu that leans into bold, traditional Chinese flavours. You’ll find dishes here that go beyond the usual takeaway staples – think pigs’ ear in chilli oil or tofu with salted egg yolk. It’s not fancy, but it’s honest, hearty, and full of character.

Enter the simple exterior of Little Asia on Walmgate into a welcoming place that feels familiar. The menu is packed with Korean comfort food classics – bibimbap, kimchi, fried chicken – and the portions are generous. It’s a small, friendly space with a big heart, and a place where you feel right at home.
37 Walmgate, YO1 9TX
Ipfu on George Hudson Street is an inviting spot offering a broad range of Japanese dishes – sushi, ramen, donburi, and more. The food is fresh and the atmosphere makes you want to stay a while. A relaxed and refined restaurant, whether you’re craving a comforting bowl of noodles or a sushi platter to share with friends.

The York guilds are a living legacy of trade, tradition and community that shaped the city. We spoke to City of York Councillor and Merchant Adventurer Ashley Mason for the story of York’s guilds.
Have you ever wandered through York and wondered about the grand halls tucked behind historic buildings, or the curious names like ‘Scriveners’ and ‘Cordwainers’? These curios are a legacy that helped shape the city for centuries: the guilds.
Ashley Mason, a member of the Merchant Adventurers, explains: “Guilds were early trading associations comprising people with the same skills or business – tailors, butchers, mercers, bakers. They were key in regulating trades and protecting standards, providing fellowship and supporting each other.”
But they weren’t just about business - these guilds were also pivotal to York’s governance. “They played an active role in running the city and providing an early form of local government alongside the Mayor, Sheriffs and cooperation – or council as we would call it today,” Ashley adds.
Over the centuries, York’s guilds evolved, trading with Europe, regulating who could do business in the city, and offering support to apprentices and struggling members. They petitioned for royal charters to protect their rights and privileges, and many became powerful companies in their own right, vying for power and influence. “As other institutions grew in power, some of their influence and control transferred,” Ashley notes. “A modern-day example being Trading Standards Officers employed by the local authority. This would have been self-policed by the guilds.”
As time passed, some guilds merged, others disbanded, their purpose lost. Today, only a few remain, with the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and the Merchant Taylors’ Hall standing proud in Grade I listed buildings. Bedern Hall now hosts three smaller reformed guilds and the Guild of Freemen, while, Ashley confirms, “York’s Guildhall behind Mansion House was the original place business and governance were done in the city.”
So what role do guilds play in York today?
“They embody York's cultural heritage,” Ashley says. “They keep traditions alive whilst providing a modern purpose.” Many offer charitable funds, host public events, and maintain historic buildings. Ashley’s own guild, the Merchant Adventurers, is particularly active: “We offer free curriculum-based visits to the hall for local primary school children, fund an enterprise programme to inspire teenagers, support pensioners in York, recognise local military achievements, sponsor the apprentice of the year award, and host business breakfasts to bring our members and the city's business community and students together.”
The guilds’ presence remains evident throughout York. “You’ll see the guilds represented at special events like Remembrance Sunday, Royal Visits, or services at York Minster,” Ashley says. “You can explore their legacy through history books, with many of York's high profile families being linked to the guilds,” he continues. “And you can visit All Saints Church - the church for many of York's guilds - as well as the magnificent Guildhalls around the city.”
Lauren Marshall, Museum Director at Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, tells us all about one of the most remarkable and best-preserved medieval guild halls in the world.
The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall has played a vital role in York’s commercial, charitable, and spiritual life for centuries. Founded in 1357 by a group of influential merchants, it began as the Guild of Our Lord Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. By 1430, it became the Mystery of Mercers, and in 1581, Queen Elizabeth I granted a second Royal Charter, renaming it The Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York.
A ‘merchant adventurer’ was an entrepreneur who risked capital to trade overseas, mainly with continental Europe. The Hall they built includes a magnificent timber-framed Great Hall for business and feasting, an Undercroft that served as a hospital for the poor, and a Chapel reflecting the guild’s religious duties – illustrating their founding principles of commerce, charity, and worship.
In the late 18th century, the Undercroft became York’s first Dispensary, offering free medical care to the poor – 150 years before the NHS. The Company helped found the York Chamber of Commerce in 1895 and the University of York in 1963. Though no longer a trading body, many of its ancient purposes remain; it has strong charitable programmes and plays an important role in the business life of the city.
Today, the Company’s members are drawn from business and professions from across the city and North and East Yorkshire. It holds its medieval Hall in trust and continues to maintain it for the education and enjoyment of the public.
Visitors can explore the Great Hall, Undercroft, Chapel, and a number of interesting ante rooms. Museum displays tell the story of medieval trade and York’s merchants, with original artefacts, portraits, and documents. Guided tours and seasonal events bring the Hall to life, and younger guests are welcomed by William
York is quietly brewing up one of the most exciting coffee scenes in the UK. Whether you’re a flat white fanatic, a filter purist, or someone who loves a slice of cake and a cappuccino, York’s coffee scene has something for everyone.
The city’s coffee culture dates all the way back to the 17th century, as one of the first places that coffee shops emerged in Georgian England. The hub centred on Langton Lane - a narrow snickelway between Stonegate and Swinegate - which became and remains known as Coffee Yard.
The tradition continued through the centuries, and remnants of the past can still be experienced in some of York’s coffee houses today. Bettys opened its flagship York tearooms in 1937, and has preserved its original St. Helen's Square site as a must-visit today. Going further back in time, The Perky Peacock is a cosy coffee shop in one of York’s oldest buildings, the 14th century Barker Tower on the city walls, whilst Coffee Culture on Goodramgate is housed in a Grade I-listed 16th-century building - both places providing a wonderfully historic setting for a modern brew.
Today, there are great coffee shops dotted all over York. On Museum Street, across from Museum Gardens, Brew & Brownie is a lovely space that does what the name suggests with exceptional coffees and cakes. Elsewhere in the city centre, on New Street, La Bottega Milanese brings the Italians’ love of coffee to York, serving fab fresh custom coffee, locally roasted.
Indeed, York has some fine local roasteries: Divine Coffee Roasters, on Micklegate and Market Street, is a small-batch roastery serving up delicious singleorigin and blended coffees. Nano coffee roasters Harmony focus on ethically sourced speciality beans, dedicated to quality and sustainability. And York Coffee Emporium source high quality beans from around the world to roast locally and sell fresh from several York coffee shops.
For something a little different, FortyFive Vinyl Cafe adds a taste of Nashville to your coffee, as great music soundtracks great brews here. Whilst for an Asian twist to York’s coffee scene, try Lè Specialty on Fossgate, whose iced orange Americano and Asian Dolce coffee offer a unique and refreshing surprise. Also on Fossgate, Kiosk serves single estate coffee from a tiny Grade II-listed building full of character, and Spring Espresso’s artisan coffee from award winning baristas is so popular they also have a second store on Lendal.
Over on Bishopthorpe Road, a renowned independent hotspot, you’ll find another cluster of favourites: Stanley and Ramona, Robinson’s and The Pig & Pastry are all much loved by locals here, and The Dark Horse Espresso Bar added their bricks and mortar cafe on Bishy Road to their converted horsebox at Shambles Market.
All over York, inside the city walls and beyond, there are dozens of coffee shops adding to York’s brewtiful coffee culture. Thanks a latte to a local scene that’s full of beans.
Divine Coffee Roasters began in 2016 when Alex bought a tiny roaster and began crafting his first few batches of coffee. After the next two years perfecting his roasting skills, he joined forces with James, an old school friend working in the coffee industry, to create Divine's flagship 'lucky' blend Fortuna. Divine Coffee Roasters have now grown into masterful hand-roasters of fresh small-batch coffee of the highest quality, which you can buy online and enjoy in their two lovely York coffee shops.

Having made its name since 2009 as one of Leeds’ finest coffee shops, La Bottega Milanese brought its taste of Italy to York in 2024, not long after Katia had taken over her beloved coffee shop. “If it’s not from Italy it’s from Yorkshire,” they say, a mantra embodied in their imported goodies and fresh ingredients enjoyed in a social setting with a coffee obsession; fusing an authentic Milan experience with the best local offerings.
